Soil health key to sustainable irrigation Shifting from gun irrigation to a Zimmatic variable rate irrigation pivot system has helped Hawke’s Bay couple Simon and Lou White save more than $1,000 a week in labour and running costs. They are also making the most sustainable use of their water.

The White’s were finalists in the 2021 Zimmatic Trailblazer Sustainable Irrigation Awards. They farm a mix of arable cropping and sheep and beef finishing across their 1100-hectare property, including a lease property, which has been in their family for three generations.

The couple use four Centre pivot irrigators with variable rate irrigation (VRI) technology to help them isolate irrigation blocks based on their farm’s soil types, and the seasonal crops in the ground, ensuring the most sustainable use of water.

“Zimmatic’s Precision VRI system has allowed us to put water and nutrients exactly where the plants need it, saving time, cost, and having a positive environmental impact,” says Simon.

The White’s harvest most of their water throughout the winter months from excess flood water and store it in four large irrigation dams for summer application. They then stagger-plant crops so the demand for irrigation is spread across a five-month planting programme. They also match crops to the soil types on their farm.

“We’ve been looking at how isolating

different zones impacts how much water we’re using and cutting out laneways in areas that don’t need to be irrigated,” says Simon.

“The system is helping us use the resource as sustainably as possible.”

Crops grown include processed vegetables for McCains, squash for the Japanese market, milling and feed wheat, malting and feed barley, and grass seed for seed production.

They also produce five vegetable seed crops for South Pacific Seeds (SPS). Alongside the cropping, they are also finishing prime lamb through winter months and beef all year round.

The couple also recently added hemp to their operation, establishing another off-farm business alongside our business partner Isaac Beach, Kanapu Hempery, where they process, manufacture, package and sell hemp food products. They also recently added Faba beans to their crop rotation - a type of broad bean.

The couple’s operation is based on no-tillage with all crops direct drilled, which also helps preserve soil structure and maintain soil biology.

“Our soil health is the key to the sustainability of our operation for generations to come.

Holding the moisture in our soils is key to how sustainable our irrigation is.

“We are the caretakers for our children and future generations. We are lucky to have guardianship of our land and intend to pass it on in the best state possible.”

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say James Hannon is a familiar face at TFM Tractors. In fact, he’s been a part of the Tulloch Farm Machines/TFM Tractors family twice since he left school, and both his father David and grandfather Neale worked for the Solway business. But James’ elevation to the new position does carry some significance.

On the first of May this year, Tulloch Farm Machines and TFM Tractors 25 staff were split into two divisions, with John Tulloch remaining as Managing Director of Tulloch Farm Machines, and James becoming Dealer Principal of TFM Tractors. Tulloch Farm Machines will continue to be one of New Zealand’s leading distributors of farm machinery, representing world leading brands such as Krone.

TFM Tractors will continue providing Wairarapa farmers, lifestylers and contractors with sales, service and parts support for Massey Ferguson, Fendt and Iseki tractors, Krone, and other leading machinery brands.

Customers of TFM Tractors will continue to see the same familiar faces as well, including Sales Manager Cyril Butler, Service Manager Jamie Hansen, and Parts Manager Craig Amundsen. But there will be changes, James says, and they will all be positive, especially in after-sales.

“We are restructuring our after-sales service and parts departments and how they work.

“Our retail parts department has outgrown

its space, so we are going to move that to a new area and expand TFM Tools into a larger retail space selling a wide range of tools, engineering supplies, and lubricants.

“We are also going to relocate some staff to the areas where they are specialists in their field.

“These changes will allow us to increase the product range, stock we have on-hand, and increase our focus on each division.”

James’ background means he is the perfect person to oversee these changes. He joined Tulloch Farm Machines/TFM Tractors straight out of college, starting in Parts, followed by Service, and then Sales over ten years.

In 2013 he went to work for a well-known Masterton car dealership in Parts, Sales, and then becoming Branch Manager before returning to Sales at TFM Tractors two years ago.

The tractor and machinery industry is changing rapidly, James says.

“There’s been a lot of changes over the last ten years in the industry. The technology that has come through is phenomenal.”

To keep up with the changes, TFM Tractors has been putting its staff through a lot of online training during the covid pandemic.

James says that despite the “doom and gloom” around, the industry is doing very well at the moment, and “looks forward to increasing the level of service to customers.”

Owner Davy Garland is a second generation sawmiller and logger who has been involved in forestry since growing up in Gisborne.

In the forest, they take care of the harvest planning and log marketing, logging, cartage and earthworks.

He studied Forestry Management at Massey University before starting Log Works Limited on the East Coast ten years ago, moving down to Wairarapa six years ago.

They can handle any forest size from a few macrocarpa trees to a large radiata pine forest.

Davy’s partner, Sally Newcombe assists in the day-to-day running of the business.

Log Works offers a range of services.

At the yard, logs are sawn into timber which is graded as clears (joinery and furniture), framing (construction, fencing, panelling, tongue and groove, decking) or as landscape grade (planter boxes/raised gardens/edging).

Leftovers from sawmilling and low grade logs of various species are split into firewood.

Nothing goes to waste. These products are sold to households and businesses throughout Wairarapa as well as the rest of the country.

Whereas most forest harvesting businesses are only interested in radiata pine, Log Works is also keen on alternative species such as gum, redwood and macrocarpa.

Log Works uses specialist tree felling machines which harvests trees quickly and safely.

“We are able to fell trees in a controlled manner with minimal stem breakage by using our fixed felling head connected to a 50 tonne digger,” says Davy.

“This allows us to easily and safely fell trees around obstacles like fences.”

Log Works is always on the lookout for a new supply of trees, he says.

Lou has been living in the Wairarapa for over 10 years and thrives on her dairy farm with her young family, managing the business alongside her husband.

David grew up on a sheep and beef farm east of Martinborough. He moved back to the Wairarapa 20 years ago and still works two days a week on the family farm.

Both live and breathe the rural lifestyle and are passionate about helping other rural business owners to feel supported and on track with their business goals.

With first-hand experience from their own farms, they know the issues farmers are facing and can help them to maximise their business’ performance.

“Farmers wear all the hats,” says Lou. “Payroll, bookkeeping, people management ... it’s quite a lot. Our goal is to help make their life easier so they’re not doing everything on their own.”

Looking to build? Pole sheds are a great option Typical pole sheds found on farms have evolved over the years and can now be designed and custom built to suit a range of different customer needs. They can vary in shape and size and there is no longer a ‘standard’ looking pole shed either.

In days gone by most pole sheds were two or three bays long with three corrugated iron sides and a slanted roof to house bobby calves, tractors, or hay baleage.

Next generation Outlander hybrid ready to test drive

Where will you and your farming business be in ten years’ time?

Introduced in 2006, The Outlander is New Zealand’s favourite seven-seat SUV. The 2022 model, which is available to test drive at Wairarapa Mitsubishi in Queen Street, Masterton, represents the next generation of the car, says Dealer Principal Brent Cooper.

“It’s a whole new model – a clean sheet with almost nothing the same.”

The timing of its introduction could not be better, he says, as brand new buyers will enjoy a government rebate of $5,750 on the hybrid, which is around 10 per cent of the price of the entry level version which is $60,990. There are plenty of other reasons the Outlander hybrid will appeal to Wairarapa residents, Brent believes.

“The 4WD is capable of many different tasks from taking all the family on holiday to handling rough ground and rural roads.

“It’s bigger, more powerful, and more economic.”

It is also very safe. Last year the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP SAFETY) which is Australasia’s independent vehicle safety authority, introduced much more stringent safety requirements.

Under these new rules, the Outlander still achieved the top five-star rating. Brent believes the new model also represents a massive leap forward in the aesthetics of the Outlander.

“It’s a completely different design – more bold and dynamic.”

But the only way to really appreciate the new Outlander hybrid is to take the car for a test drive, Brent says.

“It needs to be driven to be appreciated.”

Putting the South Wairarapa first Agricultural contracting business Colton Bros has been part of the South Wairarapa farming community for seven decades and continues to put local farmers first.

Colton Bros services their South Wairarapa clients from its base in Georges Road, Martinbororough.

Unlike other methods of drying crops, this process is not as weather-dependent, so farmers are guaranteed to harvest the maximum potential of their crop.

This is particularly important in today’s changing climatic conditions, says Rob. “We run two late model combines and a fleet of truck and trailer units. This avoids congestion and allows the facility to function efficiently.”

The hostel van is often in constant use making sure students get to all their commitments.

Large emphasis is placed on academic achievement. The hostel has an excellent relationship with Wairarapa College, and its principal.

Our hostel manager, Sue Wallis receives fortnightly reports on all the students. Extra support is put in place wherever necessary on top of students completing their homework under supervision, two to three times a week.

A big focus for us, is to help students gain independence by learning how to live away from home and prepare for life after college.

We look to develop their life skills, teach them to be accepting of others, understand tolerance, build resilience, and realise their potential.

We try to instil a good work ethic and time keeping habits in all students. In providing them with a home away from home, they have chores that need to be completed and structures and rules that need to be adhered to.

Charlotte is this year’s Head Girl at Wairarapa College, and she has been at Poto College House for nearly five years. Now in her final year, she says she has loved her time with us and that being here is like being part of one massive family, where students and staff care and look out for one another. The experience has taught her how to get along with others, live away from home, be organised and prepare for going to university.

He started the business four years ago with his wife Stacey. She runs the business’s office administration and Robert does all the driving and freight haulage.

The sole owner and operator couple pride themselves on responding quickly and giving personable service.

“We aim to please and be easily contactable,” says Robert. “A lot of people know what we’re capable of, and often want us to bring things when we’re next out their way, which we do.

Tanks need to be emptied every three to five years. If more time has elapsed, then your tank is definitely in need of emptying.

If you have poor drainage in your sink, bath or shower, then it is probably well past time for your septic tank to be emptied.

The business has its own hydro blaster which can crawl along pipes, cleaning as it goes.

In 1948 Albert Paterson, who was a blacksmith/engineer by trade, had three sons. Bulldozers were a relatively rare machine in Wairarapa, but Albert could see the potential these machines could have for Wairarapa farmers, so he bought one and that was the start of A M Paterson & Sons Contractors.

Two of his sons, Harry and Peter, had bulldozers, while his third son Lewis had a backactor digger.

The brothers ended up going their separate ways and now Peter’s son Geoff and his son Ollie are still servicing the earthmoving needs of Wairarapa’s farmers and lifestylers.

Geoff started working for his father Peter in 1977 when the Land Development Scheme was in place, doing major development of Glenburn Station and other Wairarapa farms.

Geoff is still on the machines and has now been joined by his son Ollie and they service a loyal clientele.

Our primary products wrapped in pine for export Like farming, forestry is a wealth creator. It produces an essential product. In our case, pine is the raw material needed for the massive nation-wide programme of new house building, and the biofuels needed for sectors like dairy, as it transitions away from its reliance on coal for drying milk powder.

Technicians around the world are working on ways which wood derivatives can replace coal and oil-based plastics.

New Zealand is well placed to use this technology with our large dairy processing base that is highly reliant on coal. Fonterra has modified several of its factories by replacing coal burners with wood pellet burning furnaces. Our sawmills already provide a perfect example of carbon neutrality. They dry all their timber with furnaces fuelled by their own waste.

The dairy and tree crop sectors have much to be gained from a shared vision of a carbon neutral future. By 2050, all primary sector processing is expected to be carbon-neutral.

Pine will help them get there.

Paper, cardboard and biofuel products are indispensable in our world of primary exports. Pine pallets are essential in our primary sectors for stacking everything from sacks of milk power and frozen goods, to boxes for wine, bins for apples and crates for onions and kiwifruit. The biggest sawmill in Canterbury produces 1,000 pallets a day for stacking goods. It’s taking orders from all over New Zealand and they are running at full capacity.

Pine is everywhere helping all our export products hit the markets overseas.

New Zealand has many regional timber success stories already with its export ports, good rail links for timber cartage and sawmills contributing to our local economies and the housing boom. Biofuels are poised to provide a renewable energy source for many sectors and will reinvigorate local markets for wood residues making many

crops of pine that were previously thought not fit for harvest; suddenly profitable. The Industry Transformation Plan for the forestry sector by MPI is providing some clarity and direction for this emerging future of fibre.

As farmers face looming on-farm emissions payments, exotic forestry is a solution that

will provide them with an offset and income that can diversify their farm profits. There will always be a need for the essential crop that is pine to support all the primary sectors with ability to export their products. More export products will mean more pine to wrap it in.

So let’s keep the cycle going.

Horse people for horse people Horses have been a passion for both Mandy Illston and Bex Presow since they were young.

Mandy and Bex are the Wairarapa vets for Equivets NZ, the team of veterinarians and technicians at Southern Rangitikei Veterinary Services that focuses solely on equine care.

Mandy grew up on her parents’ sheep & beef farm at Longbush, southeast of Carterton.

Both her parents, Geoff and Pam Nutting, are well-known equestrians, Geoff having ridden Silver Script to win the first World Cup qualifier held in New Zealand in 1983.

After leaving school, Mandy became a professional equestrian, winning national titles in New Zealand, as well as competing in England, Germany, Australia and Japan, before returning to New Zealand to train as a vet at Massey University.

With a special interest in dentistry, Mandy worked in Auckland and Bulls before returning to Wairarapa six years ago with her husband Bernie who is also a keen rider.

Mandy continues to compete, and has more recently moved into the field of horse breeding.

Bex grew up on her parent’s dairy farm at Eketahuna, joining Mandy at Equivets NZ six months ago after completing her veterinary degree at Massey.

The third member of the team is Grainne Cunningham who is returning to New Zealand from her native Ireland for a second stud season this September.

“Grainne is a very passionate reproductive vet who loves foals,” says Mandy.

The other member of the Masterton team is technician and fellow equestrian Vanessa Robertson of Masterton.

The equine team in Masterton work from an office which adjoins paddocks and horse handling yards on Te Whiti Road just east of Masterton.

While Mandy and her team carry out most equine services in Wairarapa, they can call on the five equine vets at Southern Rangitikei Veterinary Services in Bulls if needed.

Equivets NZ has a purpose-built clinic at Bulls for lameness work ups, advanced treatments and routine surgeries as well as secure stables, yards and paddocks for in-patients.

Bores need regular maintenance, Mel points out.

“Over time they can start filling up with silt which gets drawn into the pump.

“With regular maintenance pumps and pipes last longer and don’t have to be replaced.”

Mel recommends that anyone wanting a bore drilled to start the process early.

“Because of the increasing demand for bores, there is a big lead-in time, with quite a few steps in the process which can take months.”
