ings over Wairarapa Air Festival 2021 is our 12th air show.
This year’s festival will feature rare aircraft from WWI, WWII and the jet age. These historic aircraft are always crowd favourites but there will also be dynamic displays of contemporary aircraft: agricultural, aerobatic and military. Wings has always saluted the aircrew veterans of our nation’s wars. The Great War is now 103 years behind us; even WWII is now 76 years ago! Our flying display will feature a special tribute to the airmen of the Great War, with aircraft that can be seen only in New Zealand. As well, the powerful WWII combat planes
on display keep memories alive and honour those who fought for our freedom. Yet our Air Festival also celebrates the skill and determination of the flyers who make up the aviation industry today – and we will all get a glimpse of the future of aviation here in New Zealand. Wings is a complete festival for families, with exciting ‘must see’ ground activities as well as air entertainment. Ground-side there will be STEM activities, contemporary and vintage military vehicles, model aircraft, trade sites, commercial displays, as well as ample food and refreshments. elcome to Wings over Wairarapa Air Festival 2021, an iconic Masterton event making a very welcome and, I’m sure, spectacular return. With the world battling a pandemic, we may be without some of our international visitors, but at the core of Wings’ success is the drive and passion of local enthusiasts and like-minded people around New Zealand. Even in these challenging times, I can guarantee there will be no shortage of thrills. The Council is delighted to support an event that will attract many visitors and bring economic benefit to our region. With international travel options limited, I expect we will see a considerable influx of Kiwis checking out their own backyard, and I can guarantee a warm welcome. his weekend’s event is the first major air show held in New Zealand for two years, recognising the negative impact of Covid-19. Planning for our event throughout 2020 included a multitude of scenarios recognising the real threat from further outbreaks. Sincere thanks to my board and staff, led by GM Jenny Gasson and supported by Chris Tracey, for their outstanding contribution in bringing together a quality show. Health and Safety and compliance issues are a challenge for the organisation of an event of this size, however our team have responded superbly. The Wairarapa Flying Tigers team led by Iain Chapman, Tom Williams and John Lanham have produced a flying programme of international standard. I learned to fly while at school in Whanganui in 1956. I subsequently flew here, in Marlborough and in Southland, and bought my first Tiger Moth, ZK-BAT, in 1966. I along with others, started the “Wings Over Wairarapa” Air Show in 1999.

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress T he Wings Over Wairarapa team is working very hard to present the first B-52 bomber to fly at a New Zealand air show. The USAF B-52 Stratofortress demonstrates high-end readiness, which is a key focus for all of the military commands involved including the RNZAF, the US Pacific Air Forces and Air Force Global Strike Command. The B-52 is scheduled to flypast on Saturday afternoon. It is important to understand, the B-52’s scheduled participation remains subject to change in the event there are unforeseen weather conditions, operational requirements or unavoidable circumstances. The B-52H is the US Air Force’s (USAF) long-range, large-payload, multi-role bomber and is known officially as the ‘Stratofortress’ and informally as the ‘Buff ’ (big ugly fat fellow).

The Start of
De Havilland Venom
I
n the late 1940s de Havilland proposed a development of their Vampire – with thinner wings and a more powerful engine. The RAF was seeking a better fighter bomber and the new design, the DH112, entered service in 1952. The RAF called it the Venom. The Venom proved to be a versatile design; as well as a fighter bomber it was also developed as a two-seat night fighter, then as a carrier-based interceptor. The RAF deployed it widely during the 1950s, including to Malaya where No. 14 Sqn RNZAF

flew Venoms in action against the communist guerrillas. The type was exported to a number of air forces, including the Swiss Air Force where it remained in service until 1983. The Venom at Wings Over Wairarapa was built in Switzerland (under licence) in 1956 and it flies in from Whanganui for its display. The fighter’s paint scheme and identity is of the 14 Sqn aircraft flown in Malaya by the late Trevor Bland, who was one of the original organisers of the New Zealand War Birds. Although some 1600 Venoms were built, we believe that John Luff ’s Venom is the only airworthy and flying DH Venom left in the world. Span: 12.7m

T-28 Trojans
n the same era as the RAF Venom, the USAF sought a powerful, tricycle undercarriage initial trainer to prepare its young pilots for the jet age. The T-28 Trojan was designed in 1949 to replace the T-6 Texan (Harvard) in USAF and USN service. Over 1900 were built during the 1950s and it was supplied to a large number of allied air forces. During the 1960s the T-28 was also successfully employed as a counterinsurgency aircraft in a number of limited wars.

Air Support Unit: Eagle
T
he Air Support Unit has been in operation since 1988. In July 2019 New Zealand Police introduced three Bell 429 helicopters to replace the previous aircraft and meet current and future needs. Their original aircraft in 1988 was a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter. In July 1989 that was replaced by two twin-engine Aerospatiale AS355F1 helicopters. These two aircraft flew for our Police Force for 28 years. A third AS355 was added in 2017, which enabled the Air Support Unit to be operational 24/7. Originally based at Mechanics Bay on Auckland’s waterfront, the Unit moved to its current location at Onehunga in July 2019. The primary use of the aircraft is as airborne observation platforms. From their vantage point in the sky the crew are able to coordinate the operations of ground units. This is particularly valuable where

persons of interest are still present at an incident, either on foot or in vehicles. Once the aircrew have visual contact with these people, or targets, they are able to manoeuvre the ground units into position to best deal with the incident, or make an arrest. Eagle normally operates with a crew of three - a civilian pilot and two observers. Both observers are sworn police officers. This allows the pilot to concentrate solely on flight safety, flying the aircraft and maintaining separation from other air traffic, while the observers concentrate on the action below. The aircraft are equipped with gyro stabilised binoculars, a ForwardLooking Infra-Red (FLIR) camera, night-vision equipment, and a ‘night sun’ spotlight. Eagle has a comprehensive array of VHF & UHF radios; for navigation the aircraft is fitted with GPS integrated into a mapping programme. POLICE

The Royal New Zealand Air Force
T
he first New Zealand military aircraft was a Bleriot monoplane, named Britannia, which was given to the NZ government in 1913. With the outbreak of WWI, Kiwi pilots were able to join the RFC and RNAS, while some joined the Australian Flying Corps. Two training schools were set up in NZ, one at Wigram which subsequently became the home of the RNZAF. Perhaps the most distinguished New Zealander from that period is
Sir Keith Park, who became an Ace on the Bristol F2B, then made a career in the RAF. The NZ Permanent Air Force was formed and later given the title of Royal New Zealand Air Force. In 1937 it was given independence as a third armed service. 1937 is regarded as the birth of the RNZAF. No 14 Sqn has a special relationship with Masterton since the Squadron was formed here at Hood aerodrome. Today with its modern fleet, our Air Force is well placed to meet future challenges.

he NH90 is an advanced medium utility helicopter, capable of a wide variety of roles: to support ground operations, conduct search and rescue, counter-drug operations, and counterterrorism responses. It has already been used for disaster relief operations throughout New Zealand and in the South Pacific. he T-6C military trainers feature a ‘glass cockpit’ so that trainees become familiar with the cockpit technology used across the RNZAF fleet. Other equipment includes ejection seats, collisionavoidance and ground proximity warning systems, a pressurised cockpit and an on-board oxygen generating system. Eleven T-6C Texan II aircraft are used to train RNZAF and Navy pilots during the Pilot ‘Wings’ Course, and for instructors during the Flying Instructor Course. Two flight simulators and 12 avionics desktop trainers are also used for this training.

WHAT IS FASTER? A SPORTS PLANE, A HELICOPTER OR A POWERFUL SPORTS CAR?
P
ower to weight ratios are important; so is acceleration. And it may be affected by manoeuvrability! A helicopter can turn in place; a car might try a hand brake turn, but even a small aircraft has to pull G and bank into a tight turn. The three-way race at our Air Festival should provide some answers, as Doug Brooker’s speedy MXS meets a powerful (650hp) Gulf Almac Cobra alongside a Squirrel helicopter.
THE MXS The high tech, carbon fibre MXS is the outstanding modern aerobatic aircraft. Developed from an American design, the MXS is now produced in Perth, Western Australia, and is widely used in aerobatic championships world-wide. The MXS has a 360hp Lycoming engine.

THE GULF ALMAC COBRA 427R The Cobra was built in Upper Hutt in 1989 as a replica of a Shelby Cobra 427. The body is made of Kevlar, the motor is a 1960’s LS7 454 ‘big block’ Chevrolet ls7 race engine. Bevan Wright has owned the car for about 30 years

his year will be the first time two handsome Waco biplanes fly at Wings Over Wairarapa. The Weaver Aircraft Company (WACO) built civilian biplanes; in 1929 they produced the Waco ATO ‘Taperwing’. It has a distinctively shaped top wing, unlike the mostly straight-winged aircraft of that time. In 1934 they introduced the Waco ‘F’ series which also feature an open cockpit for two passengers, ahead of the pilot. After WWII, the WACO company failed. In 1983 the Waco Classic Aircraft Company was set up to build the YMF and ATO models using modern materials and technology.

Yak 52 team
T
he Yak 52 has become a favourite warbird in the contemporary aviation scene. Designed in 1976 as a Soviet trainer, after the end of the Cold War the peppy two seater became available to western aviators. Several have been brought into NZ, where its fully aerobatic capabilities have made it a star. New Plymouthbased Brett Emeny has been instrumental in bringing together a number of Yak 52 aerobatic-qualified pilots as a display team, and for over 10 years they have appeared during every air show season, including many of our Wings Over Wairarapa.

Wairarapa Flying Tiger Moth T T he Wairarapa Flying Tigers have been formed to bring the delight of adventure flying to all who would like to fly in an open cockpit biplane. With two Tigers in operation, and a third due to join this year, as well as a DH Chipmunk, the WFT operate regularly from Hood Aerodrome.

Tigers
T
he Chipmunk was designed in Canada by an émigré Polish aircraft designer immediately after WWII. Ordered for the RCAF, it was quickly adopted by the RAF and most of the Chipmunks produced were built in the UK. The type served as the primary trainer for the RAF and RCAF for over 20 years and indeed the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight still uses one as a conversion trainer.

he Fokker Triplane is, today, the best known of Germany’s WWI fighters, thanks in part to Snoopy in the comic strip ‘Peanuts’. The Fokker Dr1 was in fact inspired by the British Sopwith Triplane, and the nimble Fokker was produced during 1917-18. Although the Dr1 was superior to Germany’s Albatros fighters, it was slower than many of the Allied fighters and its wing design made it prone to structural failure. Ultimately it was replaced by the Fokker D VII.

e vs Sopwith Camel Sopwith I Camel n contrast the British Sopwith Camel served widely in both the RNAS and RFC. It became the most successful British fighter and over 5000 were built. It was however difficult to fly and it killed many inexperienced pilots – but in the hands of the RFC veterans it proved deadly.

At WOW 21 a Fokker Dr1 and a Camel will fight in mock-combat, while a Fokker DVII and two Sopwiths - a Pup and a Snipe - will also take part. The Sopwith Pup was the 1916 predecessor of the Camel, and the Snipe, with its powerful Bentley rotary engine, was in 1918 the successor to the Camel.

he Fokker DVII was the best of the German fighters, but it did not enter service until May 1918.

It made such an impression that the Allies specified in the Treaty of Versailles that all DVIIs should be surrendered to the allied powers. With a 200hp Mercedes in-line engine it was armed with two synchronised machine guns. Span: 8.9m Length: 6.95m Speed: 189km/h

ermany’s Albatros company began building fighters in 1916 and their fighter series (D1 – DVa) became the mainstay of the Luftsteitkrafte.

Reconnaissance and A
R
econnaissance is vital in warfare and in 1914 aircraft proved ideal for that role. When the Western Front solidified into trench warfare, artillery spotting also proved vital. Because of their importance, reconnaissance and spotter aircraft quickly became priority targets for enemy fighters. The Royal Aircraft Factory’s designer, Geoffrey de Havilland, designed the BE2 as a stable aeroplane, so that the observer could map read and operate his radio with some reliability. But stability was at the cost of manoeuvrability, so successive modifications of
the BE series and the related RE series were intended to improve each type. The BE2 first flew in 1911 and the BE2c was in production when the War began. In 1915 it was the primary British aircraft in France, but soon fell victim to the ‘Fokker Scourge’ – Germany’s Fokker Eindecker with a synchronised forward firing machine gun. The BE2c was still in use over the Western Front in 1917 and was again a victim during ‘Bloody April’; by then the German Albatros fighters were dominant over the Front.

d Artillery Spotting One was the BE2f which was in fact more stable and less manoeuvrable than the -2c version. But the main replacement was the RAF RE8, which was the primary artillery spotter for the remainder of the war. The Observer was behind the pilot and he had a Lewis machine gun. If flown aggressively the RE8 could defend itself, and No.3 Sqn of the Australian Flying Corps shot down some 50 enemy aircraft over 12 months. The single-seat BE12 was intended for long range reconnaissance, but lacking defensive armament proved a failure over the Western Front. However the type was more successful in the Middle East against Turkish forces.
In contrast to the cumbersome BE series, the Bristol Aeroplane Company designed its F2B fighter as a manoeuvrable 2-seater, powered by the Rolls Royce Falcon. It entered service in France in April 1917 and after some losses soon proved its worth, being flown like a single-seat fighter, but with the Observer able to fight off any enemy on their tail. The Bristol Fighter at WOW21 is an original, with the oldest flying Rolls Royce Falcon engine.

The American Bombers

DH 4 light bomber
he DH 4 light bomber was designed in Britain and when the USA entered the war they ordered 10,000 from US factories, using the powerful Liberty engine instead of the Rolls Royce Eagle. It took nearly a year for US ground and air forces to be ready for
combat in France, and by then over 1000 DH4s had been delivered to the US Army’s air service. TVAL’s DH4 is in the colours of No. 50 Aero Squadron and two of that squadron’s aircrew were awarded Medals of Honor for an heroic flight over German lines to find the encircled ‘Lost Battalion’. Post-war the DH4 was widely used as a mail plane and as a light passenger plane. Span: 13.2m Length: 9.35m Speed: 230km/h

he sight of some of the great combat aircraft of WWII features at Wings Over Wairarapa 2021. The ‘heavy metal’ warbirds are favourites with their speed and power. The best memorial to the veterans of that world war is to maintain their aircraft in flying condition and to display them in their element – the air. Avro Anson Mk 1

esigned as a maritime reconnaissance bomber, the Anson was one of the RAF’s most important types when WWII began. It was soon replaced in the front-line, but was widely used as a multi-engine trainer. Twenty-three Ansons were supplied to the RNZAF; in total over 11,000 were built in the UK and Canada. The Anson has two 400hp Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah radial engines and can reach 188 mph (300 kmh). Bill Reid acquired his Anson 10 years ago and restored it as an airworthy Mk1. It first flew again in 2012 and is presented as MH120 of the RAF, which was shot down early in the War. Its pilot, New Zealander Laurie Edwards, became the first prisoner of war from the RAF.

he P-40 Kittyhawk is one of the important fighters of WWII. It was developed from the radial-engined P-36 Hawk by installing the powerful Allison V-12 into the older airframe.

The Curtiss company began mass production in April 1939, when French and British orders were given priority. The P-40 held the line in North Africa, China and Burma, New Guinea and the Solomons, as well as on the Eastern Front. At the height of WWII the RNZAF operated nearly 300 Kittyhawks of various marks.

Russian Yakolev B ringing their distinctive looks - reflecting the Red Air Force on the Eastern Front - are two Russian Yakolev fighters. The Yak 3 is considered one of the best of the Russian fighters of WWII; over 4800 were built. With its small sleek wings and big V-12 engine, the Yak 3M is often compared with the Spitfire.
When the original drawings and production jigs were rediscovered during the 1990s, a modern production run was undertaken in Romania for the contemporary market.
Yak 3M ‘Full Noise’, is owned by Graeme Frew, and instead of the original Russian V-12 engine, an Allison V1710 is installed, which gives the Yak a cruise speed of 285 mph and a maximum speed of 407 mph.

During the modern production run in Romania, several were built with radials, as the Yak 3U.’ Steadfast’ (its racing name) has a big Pratt and Whitney R2000 radial, producing 1750 hp. Steadfast was built with a second seat to allow fighter experience flights; it is also equipped with
Sanders smoke generators on the wing tips. Initially Steadfast raced in the USA where it set a world record of 669kmh (416mph) in its class – which still stands. In 2013 the fighter was exported to Australia and in 2019 it was sold to Ronan Harvey and Mark O’Sullivan of Blenheim. WOW 21 is the first major air show for ‘Steadfast’ under its Kiwi ownership.

pitfire Mk IX, PV270, is owned by Brendon Deere, the nephew of WWII flying ace Alan Deere. PV 270 was built in 1944 for the RAF and post-war served in three air forces before being retired in 1956. It then served as a gate guard for the Burmese Air Force until Brendon bought it and fully restored it. Based at Ohakea, the sleek aircraft is now in the colours of the Spitfire flown by Alan Deere. Famous from its role in the Battle of Britain (1940) the Spitfire maintained its position as a frontline fighter throughout WWII.

pitfire Tr.9 MH367 is also to appear at Wings Over Wairarapa 21. Owned by champion aerobatic pilot Doug Brooker, the two seat Spitfire is painted in RAF desert colours with the code FL-A, to honour the Spitfire Mk IX flown by the New Zealander Squadron Leader Colin Gray, the CO of No. 81 Sqn, based in Tunisia during 1943. Colin Gray had joined the RAF in 1939 from New Zealand. He was an ace by the end of the Battle of Britain. He commanded No.64 Sqn on the “Channel Front’ in
1942 before being posted to the Mediterranean theatre. There, he commanded No.81 Sqn, but was later promoted to lead 322 Wing at Malta and in Sicily. By then he had 27 confirmed victories. From 1943 onwards he filled various staff posts. He subsequently retired in 1961 and returned to New Zealand. He passed away in 1995.

The Wairarapa Model STEM Zone 3 Aero Club Our local aeromodellers present models from 30cm to 2.5 metres controlled via radio transmitters and servos.
Wellington Hang Gliding & Paragliding Club

DEFENCE FORCE STEM DISPLAYS
T
he NZDF is bringing great interactive STEM displays to Wings over Wairarapa 2021.
The RNZAF will present their popular School to Skies: On the Road aviation display. This is all about showing school students how STEM translates into real-world, every day careers in the RNZAF, as well as in the wider STEM industry. School to Skies provides handson learning experiences such as working on a hand-skills box or an actual Grumman aircraft, trying out the uniform, or learning just how planes fly. There will be enthusiastic RNZAF personnel available on-site with a breadth of experience, to talk to students and answer questions about just how rewarding and fun a career with the RNZAF is. For our Army, drones are vital for the future battlefield. They provide real time situational awareness for better informed decision-making by commanders - they ultimately are about saving life. The NZ Army and NZ Cadet Forces will have their drone exhibition where students may have a go on a simulator, see how a drone is built, watch the indoor and out-door racing events and experience a pilot’s view. The NZ Army Drone Racing Team will conduct flying displays. STEM
