Steering Into Adventure A local couple sets sail for their annual eight-month expedition on the high seas.

MATTHEW QUILTY MATTHEW QUILTY and his wife, Melissa, have lived in Upper Makefield Township for 23 years. Matthew, a retired health-care professional, and Melissa, a New York-based staged actress, are proud parents to three adult children and two dogs. The couple travels for eight months out of the year starting in spring and returns home to their farm in winter. This is the fourth year Matthew and Melissa are setting sail for the Mediterranean Sea. Here’s what Matthew has to say about their adventures.

How did you become interested in sailing?

I sailed as a teenager and young adult, and Melissa had been on boats throughout the years. I had the idea of sailing in the back of my mind when I retired, so I put the idea of buying a sailboat to Melissa.

She was surprised to say the least.

But after giving it some thought, she said, “Why not?”

We went to some boat shows to find out what the possibilities were. Our first question was, can we see ourselves living on a boat for extended periods of time? Boat design and building technology has

How much training did it take to learn how to sail and operate a catamaran?

We bought our catamaran in 2021.

While the boat was being built in France, we took a series of US Sailing certification courses in the British Virgin Islands. The training program is rigorous. The on-thewater training includes everything such as docking, anchoring, picking up a mooring ball, man overboard, how to operate a VHF radio, navigation, how to operate the sails, and even how to provision your boat for long passages. At the end of each portion of the training, there is a written test as well as a practical test. You must also pass the practical skills test by sailing the boat by yourself, followed by taking the boat out overnight without the instructor on board.

When our boat was finished, we flew to France and worked with a captain there to train specifically on our boat.

gotten so good that boats now have the comforts and conveniences of small land-based apartments. Our second question was, what boat is the right one for our needs? We looked at several brands until we found the one that had the right mix of comfort and sailing performance for us. It took about 18 months from when we decided to get the boat to when it was completed.

What inspired you to sail the Mediterranean?

The Mediterranean is a unique and a rich sailing ground. There are over 20 countries that border the sea. Where else can you take your boat to that many different cultures and experience the unique gifts that every country offers?

Every year, we have a rough plan of where we want to go and when we want to go there. This year for example, we will visit Sicily, Malta, Tunisia, Sardinia, the Balearic Islands, the Mediterranean coast of Spain, Morocco, the Canary Islands, and Cabo Verde before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Granada. But plans are always subject to change, and one of the many things that sailing has taught us is to be flexible. That’s part of the adventure of this life—being open to new opportunities as they present themselves.

What do you find most rewarding about your sailing adventures?

The most rewarding part is the people we’ve met along the way. One example of many is when we were walking our dogs in Göcek, Turkey. There was an outdoor wedding taking place. We started

to turn around so that we would not interrupt the celebration, but instead, they stopped us, handed us pieces of wedding cake, and invited us into the wedding to dance and celebrate with them. They didn’t know us, we didn’t speak the same language, but they brought us into their celebration with open arms.

We have experienced that kind of welcome and generosity of spirit throughout our travels.

What advice do you have for people who may be interested in following in your footsteps?

Don’t wait! Whatever adventure you have in mind, sailing around the world or something completely different, just put one foot in front of the other and enjoy every step along

the way. Do all your preparations and training and jump on it.

What do you love most about living in Upper Makefield Township?

We have been to many wonderful places on our boat. But when we return to Upper Makefield, we are struck by the beauty of the area— the wildlife, the blooming trees and flowers, the horses, the lush fields. Upper Makefield has done an amazing job of preserving its land.

When we’re back at home, we enjoy taking our dogs for walks along the towpath and eating at local restaurants. One of our favorite events is attending the reenactment of Washington crossing the Delaware on Christmas Day. JUNE 2026 |

INSPIRED BY THE LONG tradition of cities using public art to beautify public spaces and tell local stories, America250PA developed Bells Across PA to highlight Pennsylvania talent, showcase county heritage, and encourage exploration across the commonwealth. As we prepare to mark 250 years of the American experiment, this initiative helps Pennsylvanians from every corner of the state see themselves

A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS Installed in all 67 counties, Bells Across PA reflects a collaboration between artists, communities, and sponsors. Artists were selected on a case-by-case basis through a collaborative process. In most counties, presenting sponsors had the first opportunity to select an artist; in other cases, a local search was conducted.

America250PA also accepted unsolicited design proposals from artists across the commonwealth, some of which were selected by sponsors.

All bell designs were reviewed and approved by America250PA’s Arts & Culture Subcommittee. While we aimed to feature artists from the communities where bells were placed whenever possible, every bell was ultimately created by a Pennsylvania artist.

Each bell unveiling reflected hundreds of hours of dedication from our team, the host site, sponsors, and the artists who transformed a simple fiberglass bell into something vibrant and beautiful using paint, mosaic, and other techniques to bring their vision to life. It was a true example of how art can bring people together and turn abstract ideas like “history” and “community” into something people can reach out and touch.

AMPLIFYING LOCAL PRIDE America250PA stresses to our partner counties and communities that this celebration is about 250 years of American history. We believe every Pennsylvania community has something to celebrate in 2026. However, in corners of the commonwealth with deep roots in the Revolutionary era, this moment feels especially powerful. The authentic connections we have to the Spirit of 1776 all over our region makes this year feel that much more powerful and potent.

I was especially excited to unveil the bell “Local Color” by artist James Feehan at ShopRite of Yardley in December 2025. Feehan used a modern primitive style to capture one of Bucks County’s most iconic moments: Gen. George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware.

The event was a surreal and delightful experience. An historic reenactor stood

nearby reading from the Declaration of Independence as shoppers picked up milk, eggs, and paper towels. The part of that morning that has stayed with me most was watching our sponsor, Jeannie Colalillo (whose family owns five ShopRite locations across the Delaware Valley), speak about her memories of the Bicentennial and how honored her family felt to host a beautiful piece of public art in one of their stores for our nation’s 250th anniversary.

A WAY TO CONNECT Projects such as Bells Across PA respond to a deep need in this moment. People are looking for ways to feel connected—

to their neighbors, to their country, and to a larger story that helps make sense of who we are and where we’re headed.

The bells are beautiful on their own. They’re also beautiful as mirrors, reflecting pride in community and country back to the people who gather around them.

My hope is that Bells Across PA offers another opportunity for Pennsylvanians—and for visitors from across the country and around the globe—to feel that pride, share this moment, and find common ground in 2026 and beyond.

Based in Northeast Philadelphia, Matt Darragh is chief of staff for America250PA, the official commission planning Pennsylvania’s commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

His career reflects years of public service shaped by a lifelong interest in American history, especially stories rooted in Southeast Pennsylvania.

VIRTUE, DISCIPLINE, and leadership. These are just a few powerful words that can be used to describe the nation’s first president, Gen. George Washington. These compelling traits also describe another important figure in our community, John Godzieba, who portrays Washington at Washington Crossing Historic Park and reenactments throughout the country. Godzieba embodies the attributes and commanding presence that historians have long associated with Washington.

Through his dedication, Godzieba brings this important historical figure to life for today’s generation and is proud of it.

“I take this position very seriously,” he says. “I want to portray George Washington with dignity because he was a dignified man. As soon as I put on my uniform, I get into character, and I do this for the public because

they want to see the man himself.”

Godzieba was born and raised in Philadelphia. His interest in serving the community lead to a career as a police officer. In 1979, he was hired by the Bristol Township Police Department, prompting him to move to Bucks County.

After working in Bristol for 38 years, he retired as a lieutenant.

His dedication to public service continued in the role of Langhorne Borough’s chief of police for seven years before retiring from law enforcement.

“I was always drawn to the idea of helping people and working in the community, so that’s how I ended up getting involved in police work,” Godzieba says. “In Bristol, I took on additional roles in the honor guard, as a canine officer, and as the commander of the Bucks County Major Incident Response team. As police chief in Langhorne, I loved the small-

town atmosphere, getting to know the residents, and helping them with their problems.”

HERE COMES THE GENERAL Growing up in Philadelphia, Godzieba was introduced to historic sites at a young age. However, his interest in 18th-century history wasn’t piqued until he visited Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia as an adult.

Shortly after that trip, he saw a newspaper advertisement recruiting new members for the Revolutionary War Living History Reenactors 5th Pennsylvania Regiment. He attended a meeting at Washington Crossing Historic Park and joined the unit. He has now been with the regiment for three decades.

“With each unit, you become an extended family,” Godzieba says.

“Together, we learn about uniforms, how to work a musket, how to march, and how the soldiers operated.

Eventually, we go to reenactments where we camp out in tents, cook over the fire, and experience life as close to the real period as possible.

By walking in the same areas that the soldiers walked in, it really draws you to continue to be involved.”

One of the standout activities the group participates in is the Crossing of the Delaware reenactments each December. Members also take part in more than 10 other reenactments a year around Philadelphia, New England, and the South.

Over time, reenactors move up in responsibility, and in 2003, Godzieba decided to audition for the role of Washington. The first two times he auditioned he did not get the part, but the third time was the charm. The audition process included answering questions about Washington’s life as a civilian and soldier, reciting parts of Thomas Paine’s “The American Crisis,” and looking the part with an authentic handmade uniform.

Impressed by his performance, a panel of five judges selected him for

this prestigious role in 2009.

“George Washington is a fascinating guy,” Godzieba says.

“I really like the background of the man himself, not just his military career. He loved consensus and enjoyed talking to his officers to make sure everybody agreed upon issues. I think we are similar because he was chosen to be a general and I was chosen to run police operations. I’m also a guy who loves consensus. I like to portray the human part of him when I come out to greet people at the crossing every year.”

Jennifer Martin, executive director of Friends of Washington Crossing Park, works closely with Godzieba on many projects and agrees that the two men share several qualities.

“John is a natural leader,” she says.

“Like Washington, he is thoughtful, composed, and intentional in how he carries himself. He has a strong moral compass, and I think his experience as an officer and chief has helped shape his leadership qualities that make him well suited for this role.”

A NATURAL LEADER When Godzieba finally received his opportunity to portray Washington crossing the Delaware River, Washington Crossing Historic Park faced closure due to state funding losses related to the 2008 market crash. Not wanting to go a year without the famous reenactment, Godzieba and other community members raised money for the Crossing to continue and succeeded.

Godzieba has led this momentous reenactment now for 25 years.

“Once you get in the boat, the first thing I always notice is the temperature drops 10 degrees,” he says. “We’ve had years where it’s snowed, sleeted, and rained, and you think a lot about what the soldiers went through with far fewer amenities. As you start crossing the river, you look at the Pennsylvania shoreline and it’s just wall-to-wall people. It’s amazing how many people come out to see something very important. Many of the visitors come every year, so I’ve met generations of families.”

money for the 2008 crossing eventually formalized itself into the nonprofit Friends of Washington Crossing Park, which continues to support the park through fundraising, educational programs, and events for the park today.

Godzieba has served as president of the group for the past 14 years.

“Washington Crossing Historic Park is not only a gem of a park, but it means so much to the history of this country,” Godzieba says. “I want people to understand what took place here and the sacrifices soldiers made. They gave their lives for something they thought was worth it, and I want to make sure that this park is preserved for years to come.”

Martin says that Godzieba has been very impactful as president.

“John is a strong ambassador for our mission, passionate about the work we do, and very effective at encouraging others to feel that same connection to the site and its history,” she says. “In addition to portraying Washington on site, he does a lot of outreach events to share our history with our community.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE Godzieba and Martin are on the board of Bucks250PA to help raise funds for local sites and plan commemorative events to celebrate the nation’s semiquincentennial.

One of the highlights for Godzieba was working on a Revolutionary War Trail Map for Bucks County, encouraging people to visit multiple county locations tied to the Revolutionary War. Washington Crossing Historic Park will host several special events on July 4,

with a Living History Day, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and fireworks—and Godzieba will be there as Washington, ready to greet visitors.

He says although the park is celebrating America’s anniversary all year long with programs and new initiatives, the capstone of the 250th celebration will be the 2026 Crossing of the Delaware at the end of December.

America’s 250th birthday would not be possible without Washington’s leadership as a general and the nation’s first president. Godzieba feels connected to him on many levels and reflects on what the Father of His Country might think of this milestone celebration.

“I think Washington knew the strength of the people in this country and how we must continue to support it, fight for it, and carry it further,” he says. “I think today he would be proud to have been on the ground floor of something that has grown so much over 250 years.”

STEPPING INTO the Native Plant Nursery at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, visitors are immediately immersed in a landscape rich with colors, scents, and a vast ecosystem.

Beyond the beauty of the grounds, there is a welcoming sense of community as the nursery is filled with nature enthusiasts, volunteers, gardeners, and customers who share a commitment to helping the environment flourish. This nursery is more than a place to purchase plants; it’s an experience where education and inspiration take root.

A LOCAL TREASURE The preserve is nestled in Solebury Township, just outside Upper Makefield Township. These communities are blooming with excitement because this premier nature destination recently received a highly acclaimed national honor.

The Native Plant Nursery was named one of the Top 10 best plant nurseries in the country by USA Today. This beautiful location was nominated by a panel of industry experts and voted on by the public.

Peter Couchman, executive director of Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, has led the organization since 2020. He says the mission is to increase the knowledge and use of native plants by serving as an educational resource as well as a destination that inspires conservation action. “We were so delighted and thrilled about the recognition,” he says. “It’s an incredible honor and validation that our mission in action is truly serving our community.”

Glenn White, a member of the preserve for two decades, has been overseeing operations of this award-winning location as its

manager for the past five years. The USA Today mention had great meaning to him because he fell in love with the preserve long before he worked here. “I was grateful personally because we’re the only one on the USA Today list that is dedicated solely to native plants,” he says. “I think it speaks to the strengths of the native plant movement, and it means our mission resonates with people.”

STRIVING AND THRIVING The Native Plant Nursery is just one aspect of the preserve’s impressive 134 acres. Visitors can see firsthand more than 750 species of native plants, explore nature trails, attend community events, and participate in educational programs. The preserve was founded in 1934 when Mary Parry, then president of the Federation of Gardens, and William Heinitsh, a consultant for the Department of Forests and Waters, met at the site and recognized the land’s importance for native plants to thrive.

They petitioned the state to make these acres formally part of Washington Crossing Historic Park to be conserved as a preserve for Pennsylvania’s native plants.

Over the decades, the preserve has steadily evolved—adding a greenhouse and propagation house in the 1960s, becoming a nonprofit in the 1970s, earning accredited museum status in the 1980s, and continuing to grow today with more than 2,000 member households.

Couchman attributes the continued growth to the group’s conservation efforts and visitor experiences. “When you come to the preserve, you’ll notice we look different than other green

spaces,” he says. “We have a deer fence that surrounds 100 of our 134 acres and protects our native plants from the deer population in this region. When spaces are not protected, it’s rather bare for the first 5 feet, but here you’ll see green from the ground level up. It’s like walking into our version of a tropical rainforest.”

Since visitors can see native species in their natural element, it helps translate into how they can support sustainable practices at home. “Native plants serve as the foundation for our ecosystem and are essential to all life regardless of where you live,” White says. “Often the definition of ‘native’ is native to the United States, but here we take a very local approach by focusing on plants from Pennsylvania and within 100 miles of the preserve. There’s a web of life that can’t be sustained without having some percentage of native plants in our garden and public spaces.”

GROWING CONNECTIONS This incredible nursery offers more than 200 different native straight species (the plants have evolved in

nature without human intervention or special breeding), which are available for purchase from April through November. Following the national distinction by USA Today, demand surged and opening sales generated 25% of the annual goal in just four days. Couchman and White say in addition to the high-quality plants they sell, another reason they think they have received this honor is because of the depth of knowledge the staff and volunteers share with their patrons.

“No matter the level of expertise, size of yard, or if it’s just a balcony or patio, our volunteer native garden guides will help every visitor select the best plants for their conditions, and explain the benefits of the plants they are purchasing and their connection to the ecosystem,” Couchman says.

The preserve is supported by over 350 active and passionate volunteers. Many contribute through their naturalist program, providing guided nature walks, working in the marketplace with customers, and propagating plants directly from the collection to sell to the public.

the 1990s. She used to lead nature walks and now works exclusively in the nursery. “I love working with people and getting plants out into the world,” she says. “I grow a lot of these species at home, so I’m able to share my knowledge with the customers. Most of the people who shop here understand the importance of native plants.

I’ve noticed that over the past few years, a lot of young people want to plant them. People talk about what they can do in the world to have purpose, and what I can do is try to help save the ecosystem, and this is how I do it.”

PLANTING FOR THE FUTURE The preserve’s Bucks County location is another standout feature that draws more than 3,000 visitors a year. This steady flow of tourists helps to support the local economy by benefiting local restaurants, shops, and lodging in Upper Makefield Township, Solebury Township, and New Hope.

“We are here doing what we do because of the beautiful landscape and the support we receive through Upper Makefield Township, Solebury Township, and New Hope,” Couchman says.

“These communities support us deeply, and we return the favor through our mission.”

Among the nursery’s most popular plants are cardinal flowers, bluebells, and blueberry bushes. With Father’s Day around the corner, White suggests buying asters, goldenrods, or sweetbay magnolia. However, any of the native species sold at the preserve is a great gift not only for people, but for the environment.

Looking ahead, the nursery is expanding its propagation efforts by building a series of raised beds dedicated to plants that have been difficult to source locally like trillium and bloodroot. The nursery’s offerings are always evolving and creating a lasting impact for future generations.

“The nursery is the preserve’s mission in action,” White says. “It’s really rewarding to know we’re putting all these wonderful native plants into our local ecosystem. It’s why we do this. This is a magical place to experience.”

Ely Farm Products continues its tradition of bringing quality food and fresh variety to the community.

“THE LOVE OF a family is life’s greatest blessing.” This uplifting sentiment resonates deeply with Ely Farm Products owners Dwight and Susan Ely and their three children. As the seventh and eighth generations to steward the same land in Upper Makefield Township, the Elys have a legacy steeped in history and commitment to their community.

The family’s story stretches back to when the earliest members of the Ely family arrived in America aboard

the Shield, which sailed alongside the Mayflower. Dwight’s ancestors eventually settled in Upper Makefield Township in the 1700s after receiving a land indenture signed by William Penn. The land itself has remained constant, but its uses have changed over time.

“There were all different kinds of farms on the property, and it had to change many times to meet the needs of each generation,” Dwight says. “My dad was a dairy farmer and my inspiration—we shared a love of

farming. However, as the footprint of the farms became less and less, my dad commissioned me to figure out what to do to make a living on the farm for my generation.”

Dwight went to the University of Tennessee on a wrestling scholarship and studied animal and meat science, along with food technology. He was mentored by Dr. Gordon Davis, a legend in the meat industry, who helped him get involved in all aspects of the profession. After graduation, Dwight moved back home, took out a loan, and started his business in 1981.

“I got involved in animal science and figured we’d raise cattle and hogs,” he says. “With so many people moving into the area, I could market our products to them and had the idea of being a farm-to-table business. My parents were super supportive and thought it was a great idea.”

FAMILY, FAITH, AND FOOD Not long after he started his business, Dwight met Susan at the Washington Crossing United Methodist Church, just down the road from the farm, and love was in the air—they have now been married for 37 years. Susan initially worked as a Council Rock school teacher and helped the business

with paperwork and packaging during the holidays.

The couple first lived in an apartment over the butcher shop and moved into the family home after Dwight’s father passed away, with the oldest section of the house dating back to 1765. There, they raised and homeschooled their three children, Aldan Ely, Elizabeth Neuman, and Luke Ely. Since the kids were homeschooled, the family traveled the world together.

This inspired Dwight to introduce

new products and practices into the business. The family’s religious faith is also instilled into their daily lives and work ethic. “I am blessed to come up with new ideas and to see them prosper with the help of mentors, my family, and my faith,” Dwight says.

CENTERED ON QUALITY “The main thing we do here is harvest beef and pork and make a full line of meat products, and we have chickens for eggs,” Dwight says. “We also do a line

of European-style cheeses, we raise wheat and grind it for homemade pasta, and we just started making homemade ice cream last year. I try to work with the best experts in each field and buy the best ingredients. I feel like we really take the time to make highquality products.”

Susan describes life with Dwight as an adventure because he’s a visionary and always comes up with new ideas on how to enhance the customer experience. When the business started in the 1980s, they had two meat service cases in a tiny area in the butcher shop and would put tents outside during the holidays on the property. In 2024, they opened a large retail store where customers can come in and shop around.

“Our customers have always trusted that we produce the most wholesome products we can,” Susan says. “We were just a counter before, and now people can take their time shopping. When we opened the store in November 2024, it was fun watching them come

in and seeing them enjoy this new atmosphere. Our customers appreciate that they have a local food source and are always so supportive.”

Mary Slaugenhoup and her family have lived in Upper Makefield Township for 10 years and say places like Ely Farm Products is why they love this area. “Ely Farm Products is a special spot in Upper Makefield Township,” Slaugenhoup says. “The setting is beautiful, it’s a true local place with incredible food, and you always feel good about what you bring home. It’s pretty incredible that the Ely family has been running the farm for generations. That says a lot about how much they care about keeping it going and doing things the right way.”

A WINNING SELECTION In addition to their successful business and retail store, the Elys’ commitment to quality has earned them national recognition. Members of the Pennsylvania Association of Meat Processors and the American

Association of Meat Processors, they have received numerous awards over the years. One of their earliest milestones was in 1993, when they entered a boneless ham into a national competition in Las Vegas and won. “It was exciting because I felt my parents were looking down at me,” Dwight says.

Susan adds that Dwight likes competition and always welcomes a challenge. “He wants to be the best in whatever he does, so it was thrilling,” she says.

Dwight achieved another goal when he entered the cheese-making business. He set his sights on having his cheese sold at the famous Di Bruno Bros. store in Philadelphia. That dream became a reality in 2012, when his Washington Crossing cheese (a Goudastyle washed curd) won second place in a national competition. After that win, Di Bruno Bros. started carrying Ely Farm Products cheeses.

A farmer’s life is always busy, as every season has something different to offer.

hot dogs, and sausages are popular.

Hauling milk for cheese production is also in full swing. In fall, hunters get ready to harvest their game, and Ely Farm Products has a separate deerprocessing plant for that. The Elys also started making hams for the colder season. November and December mark the busiest time of year because of the holiday season and peak deer season. The family takes a brief winter break to rejuvenate before spring planting and Easter orders, and then the cycle starts again.

CONTINUING TRADITIONS Looking ahead, the future of Ely Farm Products will continue with the Elys’ three grown children, who will be the eighth generation to work in the family business and keep their legacy thriving. “We’re super thankful our children love to work together and

are best friends,” Susan says. “Living here, you feel a sense of stewardship to take care of the house and farm and eventually pass it on.”

The Elys’ oldest son, Aldan, who is married with children (the ninth generation), is starting a related venture called Ely North, a farm in upstate Pennsylvania, while still returning to help during the busy seasons. Elizabeth is married and serves as the retail manager. The youngest son, Luke, is the general marketing manager and is getting married on the farm this month.

“Knowing how much history is here on the farm is surreal to think about sometimes, but mostly it fills me with gratitude and reminds me how blessed I am to live and work here,” Luke says. “I hope the future of the business continues to serve our community and for customers to feel

at home when they step into our shop.”

More than just a business, Ely Farm Products is a staple in Upper Makefield Township’s history and landscape.

The name Ely carries generations of meaning symbolizing tradition, quality, and a deep connection to the farming world. Dwight and Susan are thankful that they can share their family’s traditions with their customers and the community.

“Upper Makefield is an amazing place to live,” Dwight says. “I’ve lived here my entire life and love this community. It’s beautiful, rich in history, and constantly evolving. We feel incredibly blessed to be part of it.”

REVVING UP A July 4 tradition, the annual Revolutionary Run offers locals festive fun and health benefits.

BY PAUL ZINGARINI IN THE EARLY 1980s, I signed up for my first Revolutionary Run (RevRun) with a close friend to do something healthy over the July 4 weekend. I quickly fell in love with this race because it takes place in a beautiful and historic setting and is an extremely flat course. This gives serious runners a great chance to post a fast time, but it’s also a userfriendly race for those not quite up to the challenge of running six-plus miles. I definitely relate to the Upper Makefield Business Association’s description of this event as a celebration of history, fitness, and community spirit in an iconic location.

I’ve run this great race more than 20 times over the past 40-plus years.

It has become a longtime family affair. As a veteran runner of the event, I present the following advice: HOW TO PREPARE The RevRun offers runners the option of completing a 10K, 5K, or one-mile fun run. To prepare, I always thought two or three, five-mile (or shorter) runs a week, coupled with pushing myself once a week up to five to 10 miles would do the trick. However, my experience with road races has revealed that the importance of tapering off and taking it easy leading up to the race

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF RUNNING The 44th Revolutionary Run (RevRun) will take place on July 4 at Washington Crossing Historic Park. The race started in 1980 and has been run by the Upper Makefield Business Association (UMBA) since 1999. This annual tradition raises money to benefit Upper Makefield Township emergency services, the UMBA annual scholarship fund, and other nonprofit activities. is huge. It’s better to be confident and rested on race day than wiped out.

A great place to train for the race is along the towpaths in Pennsylvania and New Jersey because they provide a good facsimile of the racecourse. The night before the race, I eat pasta, a traditional carb-loading meal. I never eat anything the morning of the race, however, a power bar is great just before or during the event.

READY, SET, GO This is a great race for runners of all abilities because the course is very flat and the atmosphere is very festive. The route is consistent and easy as it is “up and back.” I take water at every station because it can be hot on race day.

Hydration is always important.

Another highlight of this race is that it’s spectator friendly. I appreciate seeing family and friends rooting me on. I

Here, he describes in detail how running improves both cardiovascular and mental health: GET PUMPED Running and walking, even at a moderate pace, are some of the most effective ways to strengthen your heart. They improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and help regulate cholesterol levels. Participating in a holiday-themed run adds an extra layer of motivation—whether it’s the excitement of wearing red, white, and blue or the shared energy of a crowd moving with a common purpose. For many, this sense of occasion makes it easier to stay consistent with fitness goals.

• Blood vessel function. One major benefit of running is its ability to improve blood vessel function. Regular running helps keep arteries flexible and promotes better blood flow. This reduces the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries, which can lower your chances of developing heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Running also helps increase levels of high-density lipoprotein, often called “good cholesterol,” while lowering low-density lipoprotein, or “bad cholesterol.”

• Oxygen delivery. Another important cardiovascular benefit is improved oxygen delivery. Running trains the lungs and heart to work together more efficiently, increasing endurance and stamina. Over time, this allows the body to perform physical activities with less effort and fatigue.

• Weight loss. Running is also highly effective for maintaining a healthy weight, which directly impacts heart health. Excess body weight puts additional stress on the heart and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. By burning calories and boosting metabolism, running helps manage body fat and supports overall wellness.

• Stress reduction. Additionally, running and walking can reduce stress and improve mental health by releasing endorphins. Lower stress levels can contribute to healthier blood pressure and reduced risk of heart-related complications. When performed consistently and safely, running and walking are simple yet powerful ways to strengthen your cardiovascular system and improve long-term health.

To maximize your performance during the upcoming RevRun, remember to adequately hydrate and monitor your heart rate. And have fun!

Every participant has a different goal of what they want to get out of the race—basic fitness, overcoming a challenge, winning, or simply spending time with family and friends. I think for most people, the feeling of simply crossing the finish line is awesome.

A LOVE OF RUNNING Throughout a lifetime of running, I’ve encountered so many people who can’t fathom distance running as a means of fitness, let alone an enjoyable activity. To me, however, there is no better feeling than putting in the time and effort and successfully reaching your goal on race day, especially surrounded by your community of loved ones.

THIS SUMMER, the country celebrates 250 years. The fireworks will be loud, as they should be. But the history I find myself thinking about is quieter—and closer to home.

Drive a few miles in any direction from Washington Crossing, and you pass names that were here in 1776 and still appear on cornerstones, road signs, and meetinghouse roads. Many deeds in the courthouse archive also have historic significance. Some Bucks County families have remained part of the fabric of this place for two and a half centuries. Most have not. The question that interests me, after more than 45 years of advising families across generations, isn’t who

accumulated the most; it’s what allowed some legacies to endure while others—often wealthier in their moment—dissolved into footnotes.

BUILDING LONG-TERM WEALTH The historical record, I’ve come to think, suggests a few patterns.

The families who endured treated values as the more important inheritance. Assets were stewarded, not consumed; wealth was a means, not an identity. They were rooted in a community, a meetinghouse, a profession, or a piece of land, and that rootedness took them through

volatile decades. They invested in civic infrastructure that outlasted them: a school, a library, and a fund for the next generation’s education. They were willing to let the form of their wealth change while protecting the substance underneath. They also prepared their children not only to receive what was passed down but to be worthy of carrying it forward.

A familiar observation in our profession is that family wealth rarely survives intact past the third generation. The 1776 families who are still woven into this county tell us that this outcome isn’t inevitable; it is, however, deliberate.

The assets we steward today look different than those of 1776, but the questions are not so different. What are we passing forward beyond the balance sheet? What endures when the next generation, and the one after that, takes its turn? Two hundred and fifty years from now, someone will drive past a cornerstone with our names on it—or they won’t. The choice, mostly, is ours.
