Are you the kind of person who’s fascinated by details? Do the little things in life impress you as much as the whole? Are you slightly obsessive about the cut of a suit, the color of its buttons or the drape of a skirt? Welcome to our world, and to a season of sartorial details that will make your heart flutter! Or, at the very least, make you want to fill your closet with some of the pieces that fill these pages. Partners in style (left to right): Lyn Conger, Dick In an effort to entice shoppers Pattison (seated), Chris Estridge and Scott Morgan (seated). Not pictured is Glen Taylor. and engage them with a renewed vigor for clothing, this season’s designers offer fabric innovation, fanciful detailing and updated shapes that represent new takes on old favorites. In “Double Take,” our fashion feature, you’ll notice subtle horizontal ribbing on Peserico’s rich chocolate & grey wool knit dress, the asymmetric pleating of Gunex’s plaid wool skirt, serious peaked satin lapels on Canali’s tuxedo, and the sleek new silhouette of Boglioli’s two button suit with flat-front trousers. Debuting in this issue are TRC profiles of men and women of style. The first installment shines the spotlight on Stephanie Kimball and Earl Leake, two noble and accomplished Charlotteans (and clients) with a penchant for civic charity. You’ll also read our interview with luxury clothing czar Gildo Zegna, fourth-generation leader of the international brand bearing his name. Sports car enthusiasts will enjoy “Audacity Pays Off” in which Audi’s R8 is stacked up against Porsche’s 911 Carrera 4S, BMW’s M6 and Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage. If you love mountains of snow, you must read “Skiing 1 Million Acres, B.C.” and if more tropical fare is to your liking, you’ll enjoy “Escape to the Maldives.” But don’t stop there. … You’ll find much more to read and enjoy in this issue. And speaking of enjoyment, we want to express a word of thanks to those whose contributions have added to the success of Taylor Richards & Conger and TRC W: to our dedicated staff, our vendors, and most importantly, our loyal customers. We value our relationship with you above all else, and in that spirit, we look forward to seeing you soon in our shops. GLEN TAYLOR

WOMEN’S SPORTSWEAR,

ITALIAN STYLE Winking at the world of fashion You can’t see it in the picture here, but the image on the cover of Avedon Fashion 1944–2000 is printed holographically, so the model literally appears to wink at you as you walk by. This irresistible come-on is just a hint of the visual pleasures within. The lush new book chronicles the work of Richard Avedon, the most influential fashion photographer of all time. Beginning in the late 1940s, Avedon bucked the convention of stiff, motionless poses by encouraging his models to move and express themselves. He also forged such an intense connection with his subjects that he often left photo shoots embarrassed over the personal details they revealed to him. From Audrey Hepburn to Veruschka to Kate Moss, the book covers all of Avedon’s most iconic fashion models and images.

Combining classic fabrics with current design, the Italian sportswear maker Peserico has created “tailored clothing with a twist.” The versatile pieces in this line work well alone or when mixed with various furnishings. For a great example of Peserico’s mix-and-matchability—a key ingredient of wardrobe value—see page 54 of our fashion shoot, where a chocolate grey dress with horizontal seaming is paired with a closely knit, long sleeved turtleneck.

Flattering designs, exquisite materials and superb workmanship are always in style. That’s why Taylor Richards & Conger and TRC W carry both classic and contemporary apparel from the world’s leading brands. In our 6,000-square-foot store, we present the best of familiar, marquee names like Armani, Canali and Zegna for men and Hugo Boss for women, to name just a few. But we’re also dedicated to bringing you new and exciting fashion statements from just ahead of the curve. So we seek out lesser known, offbeat, sexy and cool brands that aren’t household names—like John Varvatos, Angelo Nardelli and Brunello Cucinelli. The next time you’re in our store looking for your favorite designer, explore what’s new. You may discover the next big thing in fashion.

Esquire magazine has been advising men on how to look great for 75 years, and for over two decades, Taylor Richards & Conger has been helping men follow that advice. In recent years, Esquire has rounded out its clothing counsel with The Gold Standard, a short list of men’s stores that, in the words of the magazine, “continuously raise the bar of what it means to be the best in the business.” TRC is the only store in the Carolinas to win this accolade. Come see for yourself just why we’ve been recognized as one of the nation’s top retail spots.

Solomon’s Choice Eric Solomon is a European wine expert and one of the country’s biggest importers. He travels the world in search of undiscovered grape in offbeat territories—true regional wines of merit. His company, European Cellars, is headquartered right here in Charlotte, and the wines it imports are available from the area’s best wine merchants. For the upcoming cooler months, Solomon recommends these Spanish selections:

Culturata: shirts with a difference CULTURATA IS AN ITALIAN BRAND of shirt with an ambitious

goal: “We want to change the way people choose clothing by pioneering the concept of sartorial sustainability,” explains Jacques Haggiag, who, along with Nadine Price, designs the line. “That means combining old-world tailoring tradition, ethical working practices, sustainable fabrics and, of course, sophisticated designs that are a delight to wear.” All Culturata shirts are hand-cut and hand-finished in the maker’s own workrooms in Rome. If you find it appealing to wear a snazzy Italian dress

AS SENIOR VP OF HUMAN resources and organizational development, I find it very gratifying to help shape the growth and quality of the company. My relationship with TRC has always been about the comfort of the shopping experience and the comfort of the clothes. I wear made-to-measure suits, sport coats and pants. The convenience of the process is terrific: All I need to do is choose the fabrics. Once the garments are made, I try them on, the tailor notes any adjustments, and I’m on my way. You could say I work with a two-person team at

Together we reach a happy medium! Currently I’m wearing Armani suits. My philosophy is that you never “arrive” in life. You’re always a work in progress, and should always look to do better for yourself and others. TRC seems to share that point of view, and that makes them a good fit for me.

{ the trc interview } What clothes do you pack for travel?

I am very practical and I pack light. Our

GILDO

ZEGNA

Traveler collection, created for the man on the go, is probably the collection I personally influenced the most—every pocket on every jacket is where I would like it to be. This season we launched the Cool Effect blazer, which offers protection against the heat produced by natural sunlight, by reflecting the sun’s rays. ESCAPE TO THE

REETHI RAH and COCOA ISLAND offer

two visions of BEACHSIDE PARADISE

MALDIVES THINK DESERT-ISLAND PARADISE, and a variety of tropical images inevitably come to

mind: sandy beaches that are ultra-white and silky under foot, a crystal sea studded with colorful coral reefs, azure skies, perfect palm trees and, of course, quiet seclusion. If one destination matches this mental checklist, it’s the Maldives, an island republic sprawled across 56,000 square miles of the Indian Ocean. The Maldives has the distinction of being the world’s lowest-lying country; its sandy hillocks rarely reach more than a few meters above sea level. That’s because the entire country is a constellation of coral reef atolls. Twenty-six atolls comprise 1,192 small islands, only 202 of which are inhabited. Of these, about 90 are resort islands, and of the 90, perhaps 18 are truly special, the location of some of the most rarefied resorts anywhere. CONTINUED...

Perched over water, the villas at Cocoa Island emphasize barefoot luxury. The resort setting is more reef than island, as seen in the photo below; snorkeling and diving are prime activities here. At Reethi Rah (opposite), high ceilings, natural materials and minimalist style distinguish the large villas. Beachside dining—al fresco, of course—is one of several mealtime options.

While the Maldives has had occasional visitors for millennia—it was a stop on ancient Persian and Chinese trade routes—it was only in the mid-1990s that tourism took off, meaning virtually all of the resorts in the Maldives are quite new. The best of these resorts have a lot in common: Each has luxury villas of unique design. Each has extraordinary coral reefs lying just offshore, a world of rays, triggerfish, clownfish and hawksbill turtles. Each has stellar service and a great spa—because the whole point of a Maldives vacation is to send you home relaxed, recharged and refreshed. It’s why Donna Karan, Sienna Miller, Beyoncé Knowles and Sir Paul McCartney are major fans. But the approach to relaxation varies by resort. Here we present two resorts consistently rated among the best of the best, representing two ends of the relaxation spectrum: One&Only Reethi Rah makes you comfortable with electronic amenities and glamorous surroundings, while Cocoa Island epitomizes the concept of “barefoot luxury.” REETHI RAH One&Only resorts are the top-tier properties of Butch Kerzner, who developed Atlantis in the Bahamas and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. There are just six One&Only resorts worldwide (the best-known to Americans being Palmilla at the tip of the Baja Peninsula), and what they share are sophistication without stuffiness and service that approaches six stars. Reethi Rah, located on North Malé atoll, is no different. The experience begins at the airport, where one of the hotel’s high-speed custom yachts (which doubles as a registration 46

desk) whisks you to the property, one of the few islands in the Maldives that has been expanded, in this case to six times its original size. There are 130 large villas, some set on stilts over the water. The beach villas have outdoor king-sized sun beds set on private infinity pools next to the beach. In a country renowned for its spas, Reethi Rah sets the bar high. An ESPA spa offers 10 treatment rooms and many ayurvedic therapies, not to mention signature treatments like the ESPA Energy Equalizer with Volcanic Hot Stones. There’s a yoga pavilion, women-only areas and multi-day Wellness Journeys, such as the seven-day Holistic Fitness journey. The choice of restaurants at Reethi Rah is superb. Fanditha serves Lebanese cuisine on tables placed on the sand as well as in Arabian-style tents; Tapasake offers Japanese fusion; Reethi Restaurant has an international menu. And the remote location is no barrier to gastronomic excellence. Sushi-grade fish is flown in from Tokyo, free-range lamb from Australia, strawberries from Belgium. Reethi Rah ranks number 17 for food—in the world, mind you—on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2009 of the Best Hotels in the World. COCOA ISLAND Cocoa Island has a deceptive simplicity, not unlike that of its sister Como resort, Parrot Cay, half a world away in the Turks & Caicos. It’s as if the humble but well-located beach shack has

Soaring spaces and opulent design mark the spa at Reethi Rah (left). The resort has no shortage of options for soaking, from swimming pools—seen above is just one of the 40—to spa treatments (right). Known for gourmet fare, both Cocoa Island and Reethi Rah fly in fresh food from the world over. Below, seared tuna from Cocoa’s Asian-influenced menu.

been made over with cool urban chic. Cocoa lies in South Malé atoll, a 35-minute speedboat transfer from the international airport. Hotelier Christina Ong’s philosophy prevails here, so the property remains a simple islet covered with palms, wild sea grapes and hibiscus, encircled by a reef with proverbial gin-clear waters. The resort is small, just 33 rooms, and its architecture unusual. Serpentine wooden walkways lead out to each accommodation, which is set on stilts, with baby sharks and reef fish circling below. There are rooms, suites, loft suites and loft villas, the latter with kitchen and private butler. The Dhoni suites are built to resemble local fishing boats. Surrounded by water, they actually look like floating boats, but they are firmly secured on stilts. Each has a full-length glass wall, giving you a sweeping view of the Indian Ocean from your bed. Inside they are airy indeed, with high cathedral ceilings. Bathrooms are huge, with separate shower and tub. But it’s the natural materials that are standouts. There are lots of white fabrics, including Frette sheets. The furnishings are wood and understated, floors are teak, and the overall mood rather Zen-like. Maybe the single biggest reason to choose Cocoa Island is the Shambhala Retreat, widely considered among the best spas in the Maldives. If you’re pining for an Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage or a two-hour Como Shambhala Ritual massage, go for it. After a morning of yoga on the beach, of course. This place has a massive reputation among devotees of yoga, and some of the world’s leading instructors hang out here. Cuisine is a major part of your stay at any Como property, and at the Ufaa restaurant, which is thatched with alang alang grass, you sit on large sofas and cushions. You can expect Indian-, Sri Lankan- and Thai-style cuisine, or you can elect low-fat, organic Como Shambhala cuisine. At Cocoa Island, you can literally snorkel from your room to reef. And if you’ve ever contemplated learning to dive, these calm waters would be the place

The best time to visit the Maldives is December through March, the driest months.

SKIING 1 MILLION ACRES, B.C. Revelstoke and Kicking Horse are North America’s new frontier of lift-served skiing IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN STUCK in ski traffic on I-70 in Colorado and longed

for a more remote mountain experience, consider heading north to British Columbia—not to the coastal mega-resort of Whistler Blackcomb, where you risk being bummed out by rain at the base, but to the interior of B.C., where you’re guaranteed light powder, freedom from crowds, gorgeous vistas and improved bragging rights when you return home. The two up-and-coming B.C. resorts generating big buzz are Kicking Horse and Revelstoke, and they have a lot in common. Both are hard to get to: Prepare for a long flight and a lengthy (but traffic-free!) mountain drive. And both are big, demanding mountains, like Jackson Hole or Snowbird—family destinations, sure, but also places where hard-core skiers and boarders can really put testosterone levels to the test. This is skiing’s new frontier, remote mountains that were colonized by heli-skiing operations and a handful of über-fit backcountry powder hounds. Now that they’ve opened as resorts, savvy skiers have discovered that the reward for a long road trip is a heli-skiing experience without the peril or expense of a helicopter, amidst jaw-dropping scenery. Start with Kicking Horse, which opened in late 2000. You get there by flying to Calgary and then driving two-and-a-half hours along the TransCanada Highway to the mining and timber town of Golden, B.C. Kicking Horse had humble beginnings as a locals-only area called Whitetooth, accessed via a gravel road and a single-lane bridge, with a log cabin as a day lodge. The lone chairlift carried a few hundred skiers a day.

I like to mix textures, and I enjoy finding unique pieces for layering and adding a special touch. TRC W carries a lot of lines that let me express myself: D-Exterior, Rubinacci and J.B. Jeannie and Kelly, my salespeople, know what suits me and put together some great looks. Another bond I have with TRC is charity work. Lyn and his colleagues do so much to support local causes. I’m especially active with the V Foundation for Cancer Research. This past February, we were able to raise over $126,000, and Lyn put together some great outfits for the event!
