ucy, our Cavalier King Charles, became the store dog when I began bringing her to work seven years ago. Bosco, our chocolate lab, had passed away, so this was a great way for Lucy to have companionship during the day. She became our comfort and support dog, bringing smiles to customers and staff alike. As my husband Mark said, “She got a lot of love, but she gave a lot of love.” Lucy would happily allow young and old to pet her, and she would stand or sit still while people loved on her. The joy and pleasure Lucy gave to me is immeasurable, and her loss is heartbreaking. But Lucy left us with countless memories and pictures that help ease the grief. Because of our love for our furry friends and as a way to honor Lucy, we wanted to help support KC Pet Project’s Raise the Woof Campaign. This new facility in Kansas City will provide a 60,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility for animal adoptions, along with an Education Pavilion and a retail store. TIVOL gratefully joins the early advocates in support of such a meaningful contribution to the community. At TIVOL, giving love is what we’re all about.

B Y: H U N T E R T I V O L M C G R AT H , V I C E P R E S I D E N T Lucy will leave a lasting memory for me and my entire family. Over nine years ago I remember my mom asking me to pick her up and bring her home. My wife (then girlfriend) and I went to pick her up and were immediately smitten. She was a tiny little ball of puppy joy, complete with puppy kisses and puppy breath. On the long drive home, I was able to convince my wife to drive so that I could snuggle Lucy the entire way, thus beginning our love affair that lasted up until earlier this year.
Part of the reason we originally got Lucy was to help our aging dog Bosco feel young again. Bosco was a galumph of a dog, 70 pounds of pure chocolate lab love. He would snuggle up to you like a cat does on your leg, except with his weight, he would almost knock you over. When we brought Lucy home, it did take a bit for them to get used to each other, but once they did, they looked out for each other and showed their love for each other. Bosco would lick Lucy all over her body like a cat while Lucy just laid there. I have very fond memories of them in our backyard chasing a ball or a ring that we would throw. Bosco would always bring it back, and Lucy would just chase Bosco. When Bosco passed away Lucy turned a little more mellow, and into a little more of a princess. She started coming to work every day and quickly became our TIVOL mascot. Her routine in the morning was wandering around from office to office scouring for food in the trash, sometimes toppling wastebaskets over to her heart’s delight. Mornings were spent sunbathing by the front door, warming up, almost like a lizard does on a branch. She had her favorite people here, who said they never gave her food, but whom she always went to and barked at for no apparent reason…(*cough cough* Sham and Carly *cough cough*) She brought happiness to all our staff and our clients. Passersby would always point through the glass door at her and smile, and clients who came in would pause and pet her when they entered. Aside from wandering around from person to person for food, when she was full she would wander around for companions to rest on laps or by feet. The unconditional love she gave to us in turn warmed our hearts and served as a wonderful distraction during the day. We all lost something precious when Lucy passed away. We lost a sister, a daughter, a friend, a blanket. The feeling she gave us when she was around is missed, and is irreplaceable. I hope we all will share her stories over the coming months and years, so we can share in her memory and love. 8

Designer Events Our trunk shows provide an opportunity for our clients to view complete designer collections. They get to experience how pieces wear beautifully and comfortably to fit their own style. We were delighted to have Jade Trau, who presented items from her Celestial and Forget-Me-Not collections. Rahaminov Diamonds shared exquisite designs that incorporate classic white and fancy color diamonds. Penny Preville presented from her En Pointe, Art Deco and Amulet collections, showcasing her pieces that feel romantic, yet fit into a modern lifestyle. Bridal Event with Nolte’s Bridal
At our event we brought together some of Kansas City’s favorite wedding vendors at our Hawthorne Plaza store. We featured wedding bands from Precision Set, as well as gift ideas for the bridal party. Michael Nolte of Nolte’s Bridal brought some of his designer dresses and signed copies of his book, Wonder-Filled Weddings. A New Home: Building the Future for Kansas City’s Shelter Pets cover story

In the year 1972: • Richard Nixon was President • The Godfather was released in theaters • Intel invented the single-chip microprocessor • The cost of gasoline was $0.36 • And almost 50 years ago, the Kansas City, MO Animal Shelter opened at a temporary — and still current — location on Raytown Road The building that is today’s Kansas City, MO Animal Shelter was never intended to be a sheltering facility. It was originally constructed to house the equipment used to build Arrowhead Stadium. Once that project was completed, city officials decided to convert the building into Kansas City’s “dog pound.” It was built like all dog pounds used to be, with all homeless pets housed together in one loud room, located in a remote location. To make matters worse, it was in a flood plain and adjacent to a former landfill.

It’s overdue for Kansas City to build its first true animal shelter. This journey to a new animal shelter began several years ago, when it became clear that the almost 50-year-old facility, operated by KC Pet Project, had long outlived its usable and productive life. A group of dedicated civic, philanthropic and animal welfare leaders gathered together to solve a problem, to fulfill a need.
In this case, that need was to dramatically improve animal welfare in our great city. The community leaders had a special passion for those who can’t speak for themselves; they cared deeply not only for the health and well-being of our two-legged citizens, but for our community’s four-legged best friends as well. Led by Roshann Parris and Kristi Wyatt, they have continued to work tirelessly to bring the new shelter vision to life. “No one has said no” has become their grateful mantra.

Those partnerships weave a narrative of generosity, of humility, of passion and human kindness, and of the power of what happens when people all across our community decide they don’t care about who gets credit; they just care about getting something incredible and awesome done.

Together, this group of advocates responded to the need. With the support of Mayor Sly James, City Manager Troy Schulte, the City Council, the Parks and Recreation Board of Directors, and many others, the new shelter was added to a city-wide 2017 ballot. This innovative campaign, known as the Raise the Woof Campaign, educated voters about the need for this important facility. Kansas City, MO residents rallied to the polls and funding for a new animal shelter led the voting by an overwhelming 67%. This spring and summer, the beautiful piece of parkland located at the corner of Gregory Boulevard and Elmwood Avenue will begin to transform as the Kansas City Campus for Animal Care breaks ground. This incredible 60,000-square-foot facility, operated by the nonprofit organization KC Pet Project, will not only feature hundreds of adoptable 17
pets looking for homes; there will also be an Education Pavilion for youth and adult classes on humane treatment of pets, animal safety and training. Children and adults will be able to have events at the shelter, such as birthday parties, networking events, and more. An open, welcoming lobby will greet visitors as they walk in, where they will immediately lay eyes on dogs and cats hoping to find new families. There will be an on-site coffee shop (and Swope Park’s first and only) that will be open prior to adoption hours for residents, businesses and visitors to the park. A large retail store will be open daily for adopters and will be the first premium pet store in the area. It will be a world-class facility built by Kansas Citians for Kansas Citians and will represent a new model of sheltering — defining the national standard for animal shelters nationwide.

Blake & Victoria Blake and Victoria both attended high school in Lindale, Texas. Their relationship began when Blake messaged
Victoria after reading a post from her social media. The friendship grew after attending Bible studies together. They fell in love and talked about their future. They started shopping for rings at TIVOL with Jessie as their sales associate. The very next day, Blake returned and bought Victoriaâ€™s dream ring. No more than two weeks later, Blake proposed at Taste of Italy in Hawkins, Texas. This was one of their favorite places when they were dating. This was Victoriaâ€™s first experience with TIVOL, but she knows that without a doubt, she will be returning for her next fine jewelry purchase. Blake loves keeping time with his Rolex purchased from TIVOL. They're already talking about their next TIVOL pieces. In their free time, they love to go hunting. They attend church at Green Acres Baptist and are looking forward to starting the Nearly Newlywed Bible classes. They spend most of their time with their families, friends and of course their Cairn terrier dog, Piper, red tabby cat, Patrick, and their German Shepherd puppy, Penny.
James & Michelle Michelle grew up in Kansas City and went to Notre
Dame de Sion High School. James is from Allentown,
Pennsylvania. They were both college athletes. Michelle played volleyball at Stanford University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree. She later received her MBA from the University of Notre Dame. James played baseball at Muhlenburg College in Allentown, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. James and Michelle met while both working for Nike on opposite coasts. James was in San Francisco, while Michelle was in New York. With very similar interests in sports and love for family, they started off as good friends and then realized they had something very special. James proposed on the roof deck of their Williamsburg, Brooklyn apartment. After the proposal, James arranged for the staff at J.Crew to stay open late for Michelle to enjoy a shopping spree in preparation for a surprise tropical weekend trip. After shopping, they went to their favorite local restaurant. Their table was set with candles, and Dom Pérignon for their first toast as an engaged couple. Michelle’s family members have been TIVOL customers for many years and always feel like they are working with close friends. Michelle and her sister were both delighted to have the “something borrowed” in their weddings be their mother’s David Yurman diamond cuff bracelet, a gift from their father over 10 years prior. Michelle jokes with James that he needs Ward Manes, their TIVOL sales associate at the Country Club Plaza, on speed dial.
Robert & Nicole Robert and Nicole quickly became inseparable after meeting. Their careers have taken them all over the
world, but they keep coming back to Kansas City. On one special trip Nicole treated herself to a stay on the Country Club Plaza. She visited TIVOL and met sales associate Kathryn Holmboe. They worked together to find Nicole a David Yurman piece. She remained in contact with Kathryn to add more pieces to her and Robert's jewelry collections. It only made sense that when it came time to design the most important piece of jewelry she would ever wear, Kathryn would have to be a part of the process. The ring is platinum with an emerald-cut center stone anchored by trapezoid side stones. Kathryn delivered Nicole's vision flawlessly. When it came time to select bands, Kathryn and Nicole had a great time finding the perfect stack to fit Nicoleâ€™s personal style. Robert selected a classic platinum wedding band. The wedding was just as Robert and Nicole had envisioned: a romantic, rustic space with delicious food, craft beers and great music. Nicole was walked down the aisle as her brother played guitar and her best friend sang Sinking Deep by Hillsong Young & Free. Nicole and Robertâ€™s friend officiated the wedding and they exited the venue to the song Winning by Charles Jenkins. In Atlanta, they enjoy volunteering with the Atlanta Dream Center and the Tim Tebow Foundation. They were founding members of the Atlanta United Football Club and are still season ticket holders. However, KC will forever remain their city as a couple. TIVOL is lucky to be an integral part of their story.

In 2012 the brand introduced a perpetual calendar (automatically accounting for leap years) for women, and it also offers moon phase and World Time options. Watches are produced fully in-house, with most highly complicated watches made by a single watchmaker from start to finish. “Five to seven years ago, more women began requesting complicated watches; not a watershed, but enough that we noticed it as a growing segment of the business,” Jones explains. “Today, businesswomen, international travelers, etc. have a practical need for complications like World Time.” According to Sandrine and her husband, Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern, customer feedback directly influences watch development; they frequently meet with collectors and incorporate requests to make ever more useful timepieces. “We don’t like to design something too specific for the moment; we want to create for the future,” Sandrine says. “We always want designs to be timeless and aesthetically beautiful,” Jones adds, “but at the end of the day the most important thing is what’s inside the watch. That’s what differentiates Patek Philippe.” JILLIAN LAROCHELLE
any people think of us as a men’s brand, but women were among the first Patek collectors,” reveals Lisa Jones, vice president of Patek Philippe USA. At its manufacture in Geneva, Switzerland, each watch made and sold by Patek Philippe is recorded in detailed archives, which show that the first three sales in 1839 were made to women. When the brand claims a lifelong relationship between women and its complicated watches, the evidence is there: Several of its impressive technical feats were accomplished with female buyers in mind. The first “tiny pocket watch,” for example, was decorated with a rose to be worn by women. Ring watches from the early 1800s were modern marvels that never sacrificed usefulness in their pursuit of beauty. In 1868, Patek Philippe produced the first Swiss wristwatch made specifically for a woman, a Hungarian countess. And in 2009 came a true breakthrough: A new in-house movement was introduced in a ladies’ timepiece rather than a men’s—almost unheard of for a Swiss watch manufacturer. As head of creation, Sandrine Stern is dedicated to the idea that the movement be developed first, and the watch designed around the movement. Luckily, the thinness of Patek Philippe’s advanced movements allow for beautifully

nrico Libani is the US distributor and brand ambassador for the Neapolitan men’s clothing maker Cesare Attolini. Attolini is a “quiet” brand; among its luxury menswear neighbors like Kiton and Brioni, it flies below the radar due to its apex aesthetic, price and the company’s refusal to scale. “We’re a delicate brand,” says Libani, “like a jewel. We make 30 garments a day. To make more would upset the balance in our universe of quality. Part of my job is to protect this brand from the overzealous American market.”
two Patek Philippes. With the exception of Swatch, those not on his wrist are housed in a Wolf winder. “I was always an admirer of watches. About 20 years ago I began buying. My first was a 1979 Daytona, model 6265. Then, a 1974 Submariner, model 1680. My most recent was a 1661 Submariner. Next will probably be the Pepsi Rolex, with the blue and red bezel. I’ve been charmed by it for some time. “A favorite is my Patek Aquanaut. It’s the most unpretentious Patek, I believe, and the coolest and youngest, with no complications. I don’t find it to be excessive. And then there is my white gold Patek World Time, reference 5130G. This I purchased in 2014. I happen to think it’s a beautiful piece because of its complications. “Take cars,” he continues. “I only drive the Porsche 911 and have owned six of them. One cannot perfect something if one discontinues it immediately. Porsche is perfect for me because there is a generation of engineers behind every steering wheel with me. Imagine,” he implores, “all those years of passionate thought pouring into that 911 automobile. To me, it’s an expensive yet affordable car, because over time it offers a value steeped in pedigree and perfection.” In all things, Libani is a purist. “Levi’s 501s are the only jeans I wear. Classic. I believe Attolini makes the perfection of the jacket its number one priority as Porsche makes the car its priority and Rolex and Patek make the watch their priority. One business,” he says, raising a finger, “one focus. The constant improvement…of a constant. When one experiments too often, one cannot be perfect.” JAMES RARUS
ENRICO LIBANI’s pursuit of perfection extends from exquisite menswear to watches.
To understand Libani, one must understand Attolini, and to do that, one must think in terms of the peerless, like Porsche or Rolex. Cesare Attolini is peerless, and Libani is nothing if not Attolini’s authentic voice in America, a representative of the pure, striving for perfection. “I enjoy the iconic,” Libani explains. “Mr. Attolini makes the best jacket because his firm has pursued the perfect jacket since 1930. “My admiration and respect for Attolini is equal to the watches I enjoy. It’s the pursuit of not only the mechanically perfect, but also the aesthetically perfect. Mr. [Luciano] Barbera said, ‘You can spend 60 hours [sewing] and produce the ugliest jacket.’ I like that statement. A watch, like a tailored garment, not only must have iconic technical pedigree, but also aesthetic, visual pedigree. The fact that something pleases your eye and at the same time pleases through performance is a wonderful and rare win.” Libani considers himself an enthusiast, rather than a collector, of watches. His collection comprises two original plastic Swatches from 1983, two Zeniths, four Rolexes and

ollywood marriages are not known for longevity, but Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward had something special. They met in 1953 while understudies for the Broadway play Picnic; their friendship intensified in 1957 when they co-starred in The Long, Hot Summer. By the time filming was complete, the public learned that the two were living together. After Newman’s divorce from his first wife was finalized in 1958, the couple headed to Vegas to tie the knot. Ten years later, Woodward wanted to give her husband a special gift. She also wanted to voice her concern about his growing passion for car racing. When she walked into the Tiffany store on Fifth Avenue and saw a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona designed for the highperformance world of motor racing, she knew she’d found the perfect gift. But perfection required an inscribed message: “Drive Carefully, Me.” It is said the engraved timepiece cost around $300. The message must have resonated with Newman because he wore this watch throughout his racing years, and while filming the classic Indianapolis 500-themed film, Winning, in which Woodward also starred. This iconic Oyster timepiece became known as “The Paul Newman” and bore all the patina one would expect from many years of car racing, which contributed to its extraordinary value. Although best known as a screen legend and philanthropist, Newman was also respected in the world of motor racing, earning many wins including four national championships while competing in the Sports Car Club of America series. In 1979 he finished second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and in 1995, at the age of 70, he shared a win at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the oldest racer ever to accomplish that feat. His achievements as a race team co-owner in Can-Am and IndyCar were equally impressive. Newman wore this watch every day for more than 15 years. But one day in 1984, in conversation with his daughter Nell’s boyfriend James Cox, Newman learned that Cox didn’t own a watch. So Newman nonchalantly handed him his Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, saying only, “Keeps good time…” Cox and Nell ultimately separated but remained good friends. When the time came to sell the watch, it was consigned by both, with price expectations of over $1 million (a portion of proceeds would go to the Nell Newman Foundation to support environmental projects). When “The Paul Newman” went on the auction block at Phillips in New York on October 26, 2017, an anonymous phone bidder bought the watch for $15.5 million (after various buyer’s fees, the bidder actually paid $17,752,500). This selling price set a world record for the highest price ever paid for a wristwatch. Newman is surely smiling from heaven. DAVID A. ROSE

GOING BACK IN TIME T
he past decade in watchmaking has been marked by an undeniable trend: the introduction of “vintage reissue” models. Today, many watch companies are offering as many “old” models as new ones, and for companies with long, storied histories, vintage reissues allow them to connect with their roots, embrace their particular heritage and inject new life into the icons of their past. These vintage reissue models have enjoyed almost universal popularity; they mimic groundbreaking style from decades ago, and at the same time carry with them all the luxury, polish and reliability of a modern, state-of-the-art timepiece. While there are certainly many vintage purists who cherish the pursuit of an original, authentic model, there are a handful of reasons why a watch enthusiast might choose to purchase a vintage reissue instead. First, these updated versions may look like their vintage ancestors on the outside, but often what beats inside them is an updated movement. Modern movements are easier to service and less prone to malfunction. In many cases, modern reissues utilize automatic movements (an automatic movement is one in which a watch’s mechanical movement is wound automatically by a weighted rotor that moves with the motion of the wearer’s wrist). Depending on the design of the original, many companies have found ways to incorporate a date function into the dial’s layout. Last, many vintage watches seem small by today’s standards, so brands have increased the size of their vintage reissues by a few millimeters. Another primary reason why vintage reissues are so desirable is their lower cost when compared to many vintage models. In some cases, the original vintage versions of these watches are so rare and coveted that they’re either prohibitively expensive, or in some cases, simply unavailable no matter the budget. So vintage reissues allow watch enthusiasts access to iconic designs at a fraction of the cost. There’s also a much lower cost of ownership of a vintage reissue piece; they’re covered by warranty if bought from an authorized dealer, and there’s no fear of purchasing a watch that has been altered in any way.

No manufacturer has led the way with vintage reissues like Tudor. Perhaps because the brand was not sold in the US between 2004 and 2013, Tudor chose to re-enter the market with the Heritage Collection, a line that reminded its audience of the iconic sport models that the brand released in the ’60s and ’70s. Back then, many of the components of a Tudor watch were made directly by Rolex; today, the brand remains linked to the world’s most famous watchmaker, but Tudor has become a powerhouse in its own right. Tudor’s offerings are still held to a similarly high standard as Rolex’s, but the brand started to produce manufacture movements on its own in 2015. As a result, its product line is a remarkable marriage of modern watchmaking and vintage styling.

hough vintage Tudor Submariners remain in demand, Tudor waited until 2012 to reinterpret its iconic dive watch with the Black Bay and Pelagos references. Both models echo the design codes of the Tudor Subs from the 1960s and 1970s. Subsequent editions of the Black Bay added various colors and case materials to the line, including the Black Bay Bronze launched in 2016, and the two-tone Black Bay Steel and Gold, which launched last year at Baselworld. With the global cult following that the Black Bay has amassed since 2012, it’s easy to forget that the very first splash Tudor made in the vintage reissue market was with the Heritage Chrono. The style, released in 2010, is a modern take on the Tudor Oysterdate Chronograph from 1971, nicknamed the “Monte Carlo.” The update featured an automatic movement— virtually a necessity in a modern sport watch. There are smaller updates as well: the two subdials are reversed; the bezel markings now allow for the watch to be used as a GMT (the original bezel featured a tachymeter); the indices are painted with Superluminova instead of Tritium. The styling of the Heritage Chrono, particularly the “homeplate” dial, recreates the feeling of a vintage watch, but with modern updates.
qually impressive is Tudor’s 2017 release of the Heritage Black Bay Chrono. With this introduction the brand welcomes its first fully integrated chronograph with self-winding movement, column wheel and vertical clutch. Since the introduction in 1970 of the Tudor Oysterdate Chronograph (its first chronograph), Tudor has continued to produce watches that are closely tied to the world of motorsports. In the same way, since 1954 Tudor has been constantly improving its professional divers’ watches. The new hybrid Heritage Black Bay Chrono dares to combine the aquatic heritage represented by the Black Bay family with the queen of the racetrack: the chronograph. Remaining faithful to the Black Bay aesthetic with the famous snowflake hands—a brand signature since 1969—the Heritage Black Bay Chrono model offers optimum readability against the domed matte black dial. Another brand that’s unafraid to reconnect to the icons of its past is Jaeger-LeCoultre. One of its most successful reissues was of its first dive watch, the Memovox Deep Sea. The original was only made for a handful of years in the 1950s and ’60s, and less than 1,100 were ever produced. Not only was this model known as a veritable dive watch, but it also included an alarm function that vibrated with a particular intensity. Jaeger-LeCoultre reissued two versions of the Memovox Deep Sea: the model intended for the European market has a cleaner dial and a smaller logo, while the American market dial says “LeCoultre” and “Deep Sea Alarm Automatic” in large script. Why the difference? Apparently when the watch was first introduced, Jaeger-LeCoultre did not have the rights to use its entire name on its American products. Much has changed since then, but it’s very cool that JaegerLeCoultre preserved this marketing quirk from almost a half century ago.

hese two models are master examples of how to nail a vintage reissue. The movements have been upgraded to automatic movements with 45-hour power reserves, and the sizes have been slightly increased, though their yellowed markers and case design suggest that they might be watches passed down by a grandfather. Like the originals, however, these two reissue models were made in limited quantity; fewer than 1,000 of the European version and fewer than 400 of the American edition were produced. IWC has a long history of creating definitive pilot’s watches, and its vintage reissues definitely tap into this heritage. An IWC reissue that’s worth noting is the Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days 75th Anniversary Edition. Based off a design originally created in 1939, this reissue cements IWC’s tendency to produce large watches (both the original and the reissue clock in at 43mm), and the elegance of its older timepieces. With a stylish Art Deco design, this watch houses IWC’s modern Calibre 59215, featuring a massive power reserve of almost 200 hours. The original model, which was so large because it borrowed a movement from a pocket watch, certainly did not offer that level of reliability! Somehow in this reissue, IWC found a way to make a modern watch that looks 75 years old; even the added date window looks as if it could have been part of the original design. This watch comes in two case materials—steel with a dark dial and red gold with a cream dial—which are limited to 750 pieces and 175 pieces, respectively.

he reissue that garnered the most buzz recently was the TAG Heuer Autavia. In early 2016, TAG Heuer announced the “Autavia Cup,” an online competition allowing TAG Heuer fans to vote on the design of a historic Autavia reissue. The voting began at Baselworld 2016, and offered fans 16 different versions of the Autavia from which to choose. In the end, the fans chose the Autavia 2446 Mark 3, a design from 1966 known as the “Rindt” Autavia after Austrian Formula One world champion Jochen Rindt. Original versions of this watch have been known to sell at auction for tens of thousands of dollars, so this reissue allows many TAG Heuer fans to have access to a watch they likely would never be able to afford. Like many other major manufactures, TAG Heuer increased the case size to 42mm (the original was 38mm) and added a newly designed automatic movement, the Heuer-02 Chronograph Calibre. The new design also added a date window in the bottom subdial. With its vintage styling and historic fan-involved development, the 2017 TAG Heuer Autavia sets the bar high for what a company can accomplish with a vintage reissue. These four brands stand as remarkable examples of how a watch manufacture can strive to produce new, cutting-edge designs, but also look to its past for inspiration. When you consider what these brands all have in common—a long history of iconic design, a distinctive vision for what they want their watches to be and a reputation for building reliable, impressive movements—it’s no wonder why these vintage reissues are in such demand. Decades down the line, these timeless designs will become the next timepieces for collectors to covet.

t all started with a book on prehistoric art that fascinated 11-year-old David Yurman. In high school, he learned welding from noted sculptor Ernesto Gonzales, then lived an artistâ€™s life in California before moving back east to Greenwich Village. In 1969, he met a beautiful young artist named Sybil (later to become his wife) while working for sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp. Then, apprenticing with
highly esteemed sculptor Theodore Roszak, Yurman designed a bronze necklace for Sybil that got picked up by a gallery and quickly sold out. This evolved into the Yurmansâ€™ first business: selling their jewelry at arts and crafts fairs. David and Sybil got married in 1979, and a year later relaunched the company as David Yurman. Year one, a good omen: an award from the World Gold Council for the Starlight

When Sybil and I started the company, it was simply to make beautiful things to wear. The business was and is a vehicle for our creative expression.
You and Sybil are a rarity in the fashion world; what’s the secret to being both business partners and life partners?
What inspires your designs these days? I continue to draw inspiration from art. I’m always inspired by what is modern yet enduring, new pairings of materials, or an unexpected combination of colored stones. My designs incorporate a wide range of cultural influences; we are not a brand driven by trend.
With such an extensive body of work, do you have a favorite collection or piece? For the past 30 years, I’ve evolved the Cable motif in my jewelry, reinventing the twisted helix into myriad designs. Cable provides a textural contrast to smooth, polished metal. It appears in elements as small as a bead or a clasp, and can be used as an elegant setting for a gemstone. In essence, Cable is the DNA of the brand.
What do you consider the main reasons for your success in this highly competitive business? We could never have imagined when we started the company in 1980 that it would grow to the size and breadth it is today. The company’s roots are based on the collaborative
I think because we’re both artists and view life creatively, we have become soul mates. Ironically, we never set out to create a business. It sprang from the way we painted or did sculpture: a private moment, dreaming with our hands. From the beginning, as a painter and a sculptor, Sybil and I responded to each other’s creative ideas. We work and collaborate together every day. I credit Sybil with bringing much of the beautiful color to our collections. Her works are lyrical with elemental forms, expressed with a poet’s subtle color palette. Also, the way she’s always worn jewelry has inspired the casual, bohemian elegance for which our designs have become known. The stacking, the layering, the bold scales. I realized early on that we didn’t have to separate the worlds of form and color, of sculpture and painting—they merge organically in our various jewelry collections. Thank you David and Sybil Yurman, for reminding us that in jewelry, as in nature, components that evolve organically form a stronger and more perfect union than if forced or contrived. James Bond might never give up his Aston Martin, but if 007 had to escape by sea, he’d definitely choose the new Hinckley Dasher. Designed by Michael Peters, this sleek 28-foot yacht was built from the ground up for electric propulsion and can reach speeds up to 23 knots. Better still, it features 3D-printed components, like various hardware styled in brushed titanium, as well as “artisanal” teak: faux wood that’s immune to the elements and was hand painted to look like grain-matched teak trim. Clever details include hidden cup holders that slide out with a tap and a windshield that lowers electronically so the driver can converse with passengers seated in the bow. Naturally, the boat’s proprietary touchscreen navigation and digital switching system is as discreetly integrated as everything else. Even Dr. No would say yes to this glorious craft.
If you want a unique photo op in the middle of Times Square, forget the bright lights outside and head inside the beautiful new Luma Hotel Times Square. It has recently introduced Alina, Manhattan’s first hotel robot butler, and encourages its guests to share pictures with the three-foot-tall machine as part of an Instagram initiative (by tagging @lumahoteltimessquare and using the hashtags #AlinaMoments and #RelayRobot). Cheese, Basil and Sun-Dried Tomato Torta
For those of us lucky enough to have known Steve Chick, one of the premier caterers in Kansas City, there was a particular appetizer that was one of his signatures. He was a generous, beloved man who expressed himself through his passion for food and entertaining. This layered appetizer feeds a ton of people, and looks as beautiful as it tastes. His friend Don Ernstein, a professional party planner and caterer, provided the original recipe. I’ve made some minor changes.
Sun Dried Tomato
3 pounds softened cream cheese (not low fat) ¼ pound softened unsalted butter ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese (I buy good cheese already grated) 1 Tablespoon dried thyme 1 Tablespoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon white pepper
3 cups fresh basil leaves 6 chopped fine garlic cloves ½ cup pine nuts ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1½ cups sun-dried tomatoes (I like them packed in oil) ½ cup pine nuts 8 chopped fine garlic cloves 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Combine the cream cheese and butter in a food processor and process about 30 seconds. Add the Parmesan, thyme, garlic, salt and pepper and process a few seconds more. Transfer mixture to a bowl.
Combine the basil, garlic, pine nuts, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper in the clean food processor bowl and process until smooth, about 2 minutes. Add the cheese and process a few seconds more. Transfer mixture to a bowl.
Drain and squeeze oil from tomatoes. Combine the tomatoes, pine nuts, garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper and process until smooth, about 2 minutes. Add Parmesan and process a few seconds more. Transfer mixture to a bowl.
Garlic toasts or crackers
Assembly Line the inside of a 2-quart glass or metal bowl with plastic wrap. Put a 2½ inch thick layer of cream cheese in the bottom of the bowl. Try to make all the layers as smooth and flat as possible. Add a ½ inch thick layer of sun-dried tomato pesto, extending it to edge of bowl. Add a 2½ inch thick layer of the cheese mixture, extending it evenly to the sides. Add a ½ inch thick layer of the basil pesto, extending it evenly to the sides. Repeat until you reach the top of the bowl, ending with a layer of cream cheese. Fold the ends of the plastic wrap over the top of the mold to cover and press down with your hand to compress. Refrigerate for at least 6 hours (can be made no more than 2 days in advance). Unmold on a platter just before serving and serve with garlic toasts from 2 baguettes. It’s pretty to surround it with the toasts and fresh basil. Bon appétit.

his is the most visited distillery in the world,” says Ian Chang, the master blender for Kavalan, Taiwan’s first high-end single malt whisky. Glancing around the visitor center, where scores of families are dining and wandering, it seems to be the case. While not many Americans yet drop by this whisky mecca, roughly one million Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese and other travelers take advantage of the relative centrality of the nearby city of Taipei to partake in what has quickly become an award-winning Scotch-style whisky (its Vinho Barrique expression won “world’s best single malt” in 2015). In addition to family dining and distillery tours, guests can blend their own signature Kavalan whisky bottle to take home. In Taipei, travelers will find a lovely, friendly city with top-tier dining options, an active night-market scene (food stalls stay open well after midnight) and the stunning National Palace Museum housing 10,000 years of Chinese art and artifacts. In Japan, Suntory Yamazaki has been distilling for nearly a century, but it’s only been in the past decade or so that Americans have caught the Japanese whisky fever. “It’s hard to nail down quite why Japanese whisky has
taken off in the US,” says Gardner Dunn, Beam Suntory’s brand ambassador for Japanese whisky. It helped that industry guru Jim Murray awarded the Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask “best world whisky” in 2015, beating out Scotch whiskies for the first time. There’s also a lightness to most Asian whiskies that appeals to Westerners who find Scotch too heavy. “There are three words we like to use: subtle, refined and complex.” Last year, the brand released a $1,000 Mizunara Cask expression, incorporating hard-touse Japanese oak barrels in the aging process, with some component whiskies aged up to 45 years. The Yamazaki distillery is an easy train ride from Kyoto (arguably the cultural center of Japan, where even the Four Seasons hotel is tucked amidst the stunning 800-year-old Shakusuien Pond Garden). While it doesn’t quite have the family summer vacation vibe of Kavalan, it’s beautifully situated among forested hills, and guests can tour the workings and participate in a blending experience. Place pearl onions in pan, cut side down, and leave to sear for 60 seconds. 5. Remove from oil and let cool slightly. Separate onions into petals. 6. Slice bread, dress with olive oil and grill or toast lightly. 7. Pick parsley into individual leaves.

The expansive two-story establishment in the 1912 Capitol Park Building is an homage to Detroit’s post-modern, neoGothic and Art Deco decorative traditions that still retain oldworld grit: a perfect reflection of the textures and depth of the taste sensations it serves up.
RYAN PRENTISS’ DRYAGED STEAK TARTARE
Steak tartare is deceptively simple. Sourcing quality ingredients is what turns simple dishes into great dishes. Use high-quality singleorigin olive oil, Jacobsen’s sea salt (we use it to season all of our steaks and chops) and a fantastic crusty semolina bread.
FOR STEAK TARTARE MIXTURE: 4 oz. NY strip 4 oz. filet 2 egg yolks 2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil (the “good stuff”) 2 tsp. Jacobsen’s sea salt 1 tsp. black pepper, toasted and ground
FOR CURED EGG YOLKS: 4 eggs 3 cups Diamond Crystal kosher salt 2 cups granulated sugar 1. Mix salt and sugar and place a 1/2” layer in an 8” x 8” baking dish. 2. Make small indentations in the salt/sugar mixture just large enough to hold the egg yolks. 3. Separate yolks but keep them whole, gently setting each into the indentations. 4. Gently cover yolks completely with remaining salt/sugar mixture. (Make more salt/sugar mixture if needed to completely cover.) 5. Leave for 4 days buried in salt/ sugar in a refrigerator. 6. Remove yolks from salt/sugar and brush off any excess. 7. Rinse yolks and pat dry. They should be translucent and slightly firm.
1. Slice beef against the grain, then small dice and place in medium mixing bowl. 2. Dress diced beef with egg yolks, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt and black pepper. Mix thoroughly. 3. Place tartare in a ring mold on a plate or shallow dish and form into a rough circle. Remove ring mold. 4. Garnish the top of the tartare with pearl onions and parsley. 5. Serve with grilled bread on the side and enjoy.

MEGAN GARRELTS’ BANANA CREAM PIE
1 pre-baked classic or graham cracker pie shell 1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips, melted 2 cups whole milk 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped (seeds reserved) 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup cornstarch, sifted 4 large egg yolks 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened 3 very ripe bananas, sliced thin 11/2 cups heavy cream, whipped stiff 1/2 cup salted toffee, ground 1. Using a pastry brush, evenly coat the bottom and sides of a pre-baked pie shell with melted chocolate, then refrigerate to set chocolate. 2. In a medium pot heat milk, vanilla bean and seeds, and vanilla extract over medium heat for about 3 minutes to bring the mixture to just below boiling. 3. Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks and salt. Slowly whisk hot milk into cornstarch mixture in thirds as to not curdle egg yolks. Return

ART ROGERS’ GRILLED LAMB CHOPS
8 lamb loin chops from your favorite local farmer, brought to room temperature and seasoned with salt and pepper
FOR BEAN STEW (CAN BE MADE 1 OR 2 DAYS AHEAD OF TIME):
mixture to pot and whisk constantly until pastry cream is thick, about 4 minutes. 4. Whisk in softened butter. Remove pastry cream from stovetop and discard vanilla bean pod. Fold in sliced bananas. Transfer pastry cream into a bowl and cover with plastic wrap, pressing wrap directly to the pastry cream surface. Chill the pastry cream for about 15 minutes so it is cool enough not to melt the chocolate when it is added to the pie shell. 5. Once the pastry cream is cool, fill the prepared pie shell and cover the top with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the pastry cream surface. Chill for at least 1 hour or overnight. 6. To serve, slice the pie into 8 even slices, dollop each slice with whipped cream and sprinkle the pie slices with ground salted toffee. Alternatively, if taking the pie to an event or for a dramatic presentation, top the entire pie with the whipped cream and ground salted toffee. Keep the pie refrigerated for up to 3 days. Makes a 9” pie.

Sauté vegetables in oil until slightly softened, not browned. 2 Add beans and cover with water just until submerged. Simmer lightly until beans are al dente; keep testing to know when the beans are done. 3. Just before al dente, season with salt and pepper to taste. FOR RELISH (BEST WHEN MADE 1 OR 2 DAYS AHEAD OF TIME): 1 cup Sicilian green olives, pitted and chopped 2 Tbsp. garlic, chopped 2 Tbsp. rosemary, chopped 1/4 red onion, chopped Splash of white balsamic vinegar Extra virgin olive oil to taste Salt and pepper
JONATHAN BROOKS’ CRANBERRY WALNUT, GENEVA AND RACLETTE GRILLED CHEESE 2 slices cranberry walnut bread, not more than 1/2” thick Butter Geneva and Raclette cheeses Black truffle honey 1 duck egg
1. Mix all ingredients together and taste for vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper. 2. Keep in mind the olives should be salty.
1. Butter both sides of bread slices and place onto flat-top grill. 2. Divide the cheese evenly on top of the buttered slices. Adjust the heat so the bread sizzles gently. 3. When the cheese is about halfway melted, use a spatula to flip one slice over on top of the other, and press lightly to melt. Keep turning the sandwich, pressing gently, until the sandwich is compact, both sides are crusty and the cheese is melted. 4. Fry the duck egg sunny side up. 5. Once the cheese is melted, top the sandwich with black truffle honey and the fried duck egg.
FOR RAPINI (BROCCOLI RABE): 1 bunch broccoli rabe 1 Tbsp. garlic, chopped 1 tsp. anchovy, chopped Sprinkle of chili flakes Salt and pepper 1. Chop off the bottoms of rapini. Blanch in simmering salted water for 20 seconds, then plunge into an ice bath. Set aside. TO PREPARE THE DISH: 1. Prepare a charcoal grill. 2. While waiting for the grill to heat, keep bean stew warm on a medium flame. 3. Grill the lamb chops to about 120ºF for medium rare, letting the chops rest off the grill for about 10 minutes. 4. While lamb is resting, sauté the rapini with the garlic, chili and anchovy. 5. Divide the beans between 4 plates, then the rapini, then the lamb. 6. Spoon over the relish and serve.

hen I was three, I received a tiny gold ID bracelet as a gift from my grandmother. The occasion, I recall, was the birth of my baby brother; the bracelet: a 14K gold delicate curved corner nameplate on a gold link chain scattered with soldered hearts. My name, Laurie Sue, was engraved in beautiful script. I believe that with this gift, my father’s mother wanted to tell me that despite the fuss over my newborn brother, I remained significant, uniquely me. I wore it on special occasions throughout my childhood, abandoning it as I got older though its message resonated through the years. Fashion is now in a new moment of personalization. A recent study by McKinsey & Company and the Business of Fashion declares personalization the “number one trend in 2018.” We increasingly pursue unique expressions of our individuality in styles that reflect who we are. In this era of computerized everything, disposable fast-fashion, and ubiquitous social media, we look to declare our personal stamp, to remind ourselves (and the world) that we are singular and extraordinary. Fortunately, there have never been more jewelry choices, or fewer rules. For some, it’s one-of-a-kind or vintage. For others, it’s statement pieces, or earrings that are oversized, mismatched
or solitary, all big trends on spring ’18 runways. We layer, stack, mix and match. We wear message jewelry, initial pendants, signet rings and custom-engraved everything. We choose unusual gems, exploded color, mixed metals and novelty charms. We go retro or modern, organic or geometric, bold or delicate. We look for the unconventional, the spiritual, the artisan-crafted. These days, there’s no wrong choice when seeking to convey one’s authentic self. (When my mother asks me if what she’s wearing is “in style,” I respond that if she likes what she sees in the mirror, if she feels like herself, then it’s in style.) As a college freshman, I suddenly got the notion to see if my little ID bracelet still fit. It did. I began to wear it all the time, a golden reminder of my individuality, my loving family and the new paths my life was taking. Then one day, the bracelet fell off my wrist, lost forever in the grasses of time. I was crushed, guilt-ridden for not taking better care of it. Perhaps there was something about that chapter in my life, a period of questioning and discovery and change, that made me yearn for the comfort and inspiration of that little bracelet. I mourn its loss, yet my journey of self-affirmation continues, as does my ability to express myself with all manner of fabulous jewelry. LAURIE SCHECHTER
