e proudly opened our newly remodeled 5,600-sq.-ft. showroom at Somerset Collection on October 21, 2017. This new location features an impressive collection of fashion and fine jewelry, loose diamonds, engagement rings and luxury timepieces, including Michigan’s first Rolex shop in shop with an authorized watch repairman on site at all times. “Tapper’s is proud to be part of the worldwide network of official Rolex jewelers. The shop is a tribute to the timelessness and perfection of the leading Swiss watch brand, operated with Tapper’s commitment to superior customer service,” explains Mark Tapper, president.

Our new store includes an updated, chic design that is not only inviting but also stands out against traditional jewelry stores. The centerpiece is a U-shaped bridal bar displaying a selection of engagement rings, including the Tapper’s Bright Crystal Diamond, Carizza, A.Jaffe, Henri Daussi, Martin Flyer, Lashbrook and more. The bridal bar holds the largest selection of engagement rings at one location in the state of Michigan. We also offer the finest custom jewelry services for those customers who would prefer to create their own unique designs.

One of the most exciting additions is the Tapper’s Tap Room, a refreshment bar and gathering space serving draft beer from local breweries and draft root beer.

The bar is also outfitted with a state-of-the-art coffee machine and our own branded glassware. To accent the space, a live plant wall was created by West Bloomfield-based Planterra. We welcome you to stop by and enjoy a beverage while browsing through our magnificent showroom.

“Finally, and most importantly, over our 40-year history, trends and styles have changed, but one thing has remained the same – our tradition of treating every visitor like family,” adds Mark. “With this new location, we’ll be able to provide a more personalized and engaging shopping experience than ever before.”

ince 1893, Mikimoto has celebrated the natural beauty, exceptional quality and timeless elegance that define the originator of the world’s finest cultured pearls. This year marks its 125th anniversary, a time to reflect and look to the future, ushering in a new chapter of the Mikimoto brand.

When founder Kokichi Mikimoto successfully created the world’s first cultured pearl, he continued to innovate and develop new techniques and designs, rivaling those of his European contemporaries.

At the 1937 International Exposition in Paris, he unveiled the Obidome Kimono Sash Clip, with exquisite detail and Art Deco style. Adorned with Akoya cultured pearls and precious stones, it demonstrated a novel versatility with 12 interchangeable settings that allowed the disassembling and reassembling of parts to form completely different pieces, including a brooch, rings and hair ornaments.

To celebrate 125 years, Mikimoto proudly revisits this classic, vintage design and introduces the Yaguruma collection, featuring a belt, bracelet and pendants.

Recently shown in Geneva, one of this season’s highlights is the Praise to Nature collection. Through exquisite craftsmanship, it’s the embodiment of a song of praise to the glory of the natural world.

What genre or genres best describe your music?

For my first album, Cold Fame, my music falls mostly in line with singer/songwriter and pop. The new music I am writing has more inspirations of jazz and blues.

Dan Tillery What led to your career in music?

I grew up in a family of musicians. Watching them sit around fires, rooms, etc., singing and playing together inspired me. Everyone was always enjoying themselves in the moment.

I was drawn to it. Once I picked up the guitar and started in on it, I couldn’t stop.

What genre or genres do your music best fall into?

Pop, funk, reggae, rock, jazz.

Anita Dumar What were your early passions and influences?

As a very young child, my mom always played classical music around the house and she was a huge influence in my life. I was also awed by stars like Janine Jansen and Anne-Sophie Mutter and started to love the adrenaline of a successful performance. I performed with my mom and cellist brother when I was younger, which was always fun.

How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?

Stacey Mason What led to your career in music?

Music has always played an important role in my life. I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t singing or playing an instrument. It wasn’t really a career that I chose; I always feel like music chose me. It’s something I was meant to do!

What genre does your music best fall into?

I’ve been very fortunate to perform many genres of music! I’ve sung opera with the Michigan Opera Theater Chorus. I sing and play pop music with The Jerry Ross Band and other groups across the country. I’ve been a classical vocal soloist with regional orchestras and will be singing several Broadway selections with the Dearborn Symphony this spring. I’ve also played classical violin with several regional orchestras and ensembles, am a liturgical musician at St. Regis in Bloomfield Hills, and performed a jazz selection when completing at The Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. I perform regularly with Detroit’s own Electro-Pop Violin and DJ Band NUCLASSICA, with whom I appeared on Season 11 of America’s Got Talent. Diversity is the name of the game for me! I really enjoy all of it and NEVER get bored!

mily Ishbia wears a lot of (stylish) hats: She’s a blogger, model and hobby photographer. But her most important job is being a mother, she says.

In raising her three children, Ishbia learned three steps new moms must take to stay mentally and physically fit – and, most importantly, happy.

Talk, talk, talk. “It’s so easy to feel isolated – as if there’s a barrier between you and the ‘real world.’ You feel there’s no one who understands what you’re dealing with, whether that’s postpartum depression, fears about your child picking up germs, or just the general struggles and joys of parenthood.

You need to talk it out. For some, that means seeing a specialist; for others, it’s signing up for mom groups. For me, it’s having a monthly moms’ night out. Other moms say, ‘Ugh, my kid is throwing everything lately’— and you realize you’re all going through the same thing. You need that connection.”

Get active – even if it means starting slowly. “It’s so tough to feel good when you’re not active. But I know how hard it can be to get out, especially when the kids are little. Try working up to it: Get a jogging stroller and do a lap around the park.

Take steps to keep yourself accountable.

Plan to meet a friend so you follow through. It’s also worth paying a little extra for a gym that offers childcare, if you’re able. You want to remove as many barriers as possible.”

Work “me time” back into your life. “This is the hardest, but most important step. If you are depleted, you can’t give back to your family.

It took me years to realize this and implement changes. But once you’re ready, you need to take time daily to explore other interests. Start with just 20 minutes a day. And remember it’s not selfish; it’s actually the most selfless thing you can do.”

hen I was three, I received a tiny gold ID bracelet as a gift from my grandmother. The occasion, I recall, was the birth of my baby brother; the bracelet: a 14K gold delicate curved corner nameplate on a gold link chain scattered with soldered hearts. My name, Laurie Sue, was engraved in beautiful script. I believe that with this gift, my father’s mother wanted to tell me that despite the fuss over my newborn brother, I remained significant, uniquely me. I wore it on special occasions throughout my childhood, abandoning it as I got older though its message resonated through the years.

Fashion is now in a new moment of personalization. A recent study by McKinsey & Company and the Business of Fashion declares personalization the “number one trend in 2018.” We increasingly pursue unique expressions of our individuality in styles that reflect who we are. In this era of computerized everything, disposable fast-fashion, and ubiquitous social media, we look to declare our personal stamp, to remind ourselves (and the world) that we are singular and extraordinary. Fortunately, there have never been more jewelry choices, or fewer rules.

For some, it’s one-of-a-kind or vintage. For others, it’s statement pieces, or earrings that are oversized, mismatched

or solitary, all big trends on spring ’18 runways. We layer, stack, mix and match. We wear message jewelry, initial pendants, signet rings and custom-engraved everything.

We choose unusual gems, exploded color, mixed metals and novelty charms. We go retro or modern, organic or geometric, bold or delicate. We look for the unconventional, the spiritual, the artisan-crafted. These days, there’s no wrong choice when seeking to convey one’s authentic self.

(When my mother asks me if what she’s wearing is “in style,” I respond that if she likes what she sees in the mirror, if she feels like herself, then it’s in style.)

As a college freshman, I suddenly got the notion to see if my little ID bracelet still fit. It did. I began to wear it all the time, a golden reminder of my individuality, my loving family and the new paths my life was taking. Then one day, the bracelet fell off my wrist, lost forever in the grasses of time.

I was crushed, guilt-ridden for not taking better care of it.

Perhaps there was something about that chapter in my life, a period of questioning and discovery and change, that made me yearn for the comfort and inspiration of that little bracelet.

I mourn its loss, yet my journey of self-affirmation continues, as does my ability to express myself with all manner of fabulous jewelry. LAURIE SCHECHTER

ne of the centers of this cultural redefining is The BELT, a reclaimed alley in the heart of downtown Detroit between Broadway and Library Street. Established in 2013, the project is a partnership between Library Street Collective and Bedrock Real Estate Services and focuses on public art. Step down this twinkle-light-adorned alley and you’ll find murals and installation from local, national and international artists alike. The BELT also features Public Matter, a Library Street Collectivecurated exhibition platform with rotating outdoor large-scale paintings by major contemporary artists like Shepard Fairey and Faile.

Meanwhile, over in Eastern Market, the annual festival Murals in the Market aims to make the neighborhood a destination for both arts and food. For six years the galleries 1xRUN and Inner State have worked together to curate more than 100 murals in Eastern Market alone and over 200 murals throughout Detroit at large. “With the creation of these murals, each area has seen a significant visual impact on the surrounding neighborhood as well as increased traffic, additional economic development and increased safety,” the group says. The team also hosts festival events including panel discussions, block parties and other special events to foster community engagement through art.

esigner jewelry brand Meira T has been a family affair from the very beginning.

Patriarch Tobie Tugendhaft founded a successful diamond company 35 years ago— and when his wife Meira joined him after raising their three daughters, together they completely transformed the business. Meira discovered her talent for designing fine jewelry, including her trademark asymmetric charms that suffuse the brand with an aesthetic that’s natural with an edge.

Today, Meira T includes not only Meira and Tobie, but their daughters too. Here, assistant designer Brigitte Kestenbaum shares the unique joys and challenges of working in a family business.

What’s it like to work so closely with family members?

Brigitte Kestenbaum: The lines are blurred. I don’t think there’s any way around that, but I love it.

When a problem comes up with the business, or there’s something to celebrate, it feels like my own – because it is. We are all so invested, working so hard to make this brand what it is, because it’s our life. The family is the business, and the business is the family.

We’re all a huge part of Meira T. We three daughters have complementary skills, which is important. I’m more creative, so I design, handle our social media and celebrity placements, and

do the art direction for the look books.

My sister Chantal is a lawyer and handles the legal part of the business.

Nurielle, our older sister, manages the relationships with department stores and keeps in touch daily with buyers.

We all do really different things, so it’s not competitive.

What’s next for Meira T? BK: We feel that we’ve established enough of a brand that we can begin to branch out. Chantal will be creating a handbag line, which is a whole new market for us. I’m collecting feedback for a men’s jewelry line, which we hope to launch later this year. And Nurielle is working on engagement rings, focusing on stones like white sapphire, morganite and blue topaz to keep the price affordable while retaining our aesthetic in this special category of jewelry.

Lobe Piercing The classic – simple holes in the lobes, from which you can wear anything from a tiny stud to big chandelierstyle jewels. Most commonly you will see studs or small hoops in the second and third holes.

Rook Piercing Possibly one of the coolest piercings you can get, this angled piercing is done at the thick fold of cartilage in the top inner part of the ear.

Helix (a.k.a. Cartilage) Piercing After lobe piercings, these are the most popular. Most commonly done on the top part of the ear, they take longer to heal, but look really fun and a little rock & roll.

Auricle Piercing (lowest Helix Piercings) This is a type of cartilage piercing that is done in the center of the ear, rather than at the top. Since there is usually less space in that part of the ear, the earrings should be smaller, and the effect is much softer.

Tragus Piercing The tragus is an oval-shaped piece of cartilage that juts out from the center of the ear, and piercing it has become quite popular in recent years. While moderately painful, it doesn’t require any more healing time than your average helix piercing.

Earhead or Forward Helix Piercing The forward helix piercing is done at the front part of the cartilage, above the ear opening. Since the helix is so short and thin in this area, these ear piercings look extra delicate and lovely.

Daith Piercing A daith piercing passes through the ear’s innermost cartilage fold, the crus of the helix.

SISSY’S FARMER’S CHEESECAKE with Blackberry Vanilla & Basil Jam INGREDIENTS 1½ cups or 8 ounces graham crackers 6 tablespoons melted butter 12 ounces farmer’s cheese, room temperature 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature

¾ cup pure cane sugar 2 whole eggs 2 egg yolks ½ cup blackberry vanilla & basil jam …courtesy of local jam-maker Dee Dee Hoffman

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 F. Starting with the crust: In a food processor, pulse graham crackers until fine and evenly ground. Pour into a glass bowl. Add melted butter and combine well with a fork. Pour into bottom of a springform pan and press down firmly with the bottom of a measuring cup to form an even and firm crust. Place in refrigerator while making filling.

In a stand mixer, whip farmer’s cheese and cream cheese together for 2-3 minutes on high.

Add sugar and combine. Scrape sides of bowl and return mixer to low. Slowly add eggs one at a time. Scrape down sides of bowl and return mixer to medium-high speed until smooth.

Pour filling into chilled crust. Gently tap pan down on counter to even out the top and prevent air bubbles.

Fill a piping bag or sandwich bag with your jam of choice. You can be adventurous with a local gourmet jam, or use your tried-and-true sandwich jelly! Pipe several straight horizontal lines into the filling. Using a butter knife, gently drag it through the jam lines in alternating directions forming a chevron pattern.

Bake cheesecake in oven for 45-50 minutes.

The edges will be slightly golden and the center set. Run knife along edge when cooling.

Refrigerate for 4-24 hours before releasing springform and cutting to serve. Enjoy!
