A Relationship of the Heart St. Mary’s Hospital is home to the Eastern Heart Institute (previously part of Passaic General Hospital Center) where many breakthroughs in cardiology occurred including the first cardiac surgery, the first by-pass surgery, the first off-pump surgery and the first use of electrophysiology in the state. The next chapter in St. Mary’s history is a new relationship with HeartSource, a program of the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

St. Mary’s physicians will now have the opportunity to train in the latest cardiovascular procedures and technologies, and our patients will have access to advanced therapies and treatments. St. Mary’s physicians and patients also may be able to participate in clinical studies, including ongoing research in the biomedical field.

My St. Mary’s Story Radial Catheterizations now Performed at SMH

The Catheterization Lab at St. Mary’s Eastern Heart Institute, led by Chief Dr. Ravinder Narang and Dr. Stanley Szwed, has initiated a new radial approach in cardiac catheterization. The radial catheterization procedure involves placing a plastic tube into the wrist artery and advancing catheters into the heart to identify any blockages.
