passport to

GARDENS PAST MAYBE IT’S PRESUMPTUOUS to put manmade objects amid a garden’s natural glories, but it’s a hubris with a long history. In 18th- and 19th-century Europe, a landowner was known not only for the size of his garden but also for its profusion of ornaments— urns, benches, planters and fountains. Today these same decorative garden pieces, now antiques, are prized both as things of beauty and as links to a rich tradition.

“Garden art shows your sense of classical culture,” says Barbara Israel of Barbara Israel Garden Antiques in Katonah, New York. “It shows that you are sophisticated.” By that index, sophistication is soaring—Israel says she’s seen a big upswing of interest in antique garden décor. “People now have an appreciation for how refined, beautiful and fantastic these pieces can be.” The trend fits in with today’s passion for blurring the boundaries between outdoors and in. “Gardening is the most popular hobby worldwide, and as people spend more time outside, they want their gardens to be an extension of their indoor living space,” says Tracey Young of The Elemental Garden in Woodbury, Connecticut, which specializes in 18th-, 19th- and early 20th-century English and French garden antiques. Prices have surged along with interest, adds Israel, noting that a set of limestone figures sold in Amsterdam for 264,000 euros (about $354,000). And at Christie’s recently, a group of four 6-foot-high castiron garden urns brought $288,000, reports Jason Preston, specialist head of sales for 19th-century furniture. But that doesn’t mean these stalwarts of gardens past are only for the super-rich. While pieces generally sell for $5,000 to $200,000 at its biannual 19thcentury sale, Christie’s also has monthly House Sales that may include garden art, with many pieces ranging from $200 up to $2,000. Urns, almost always sold in pairs, are among the easiest-to-find garden antiques. They come in two basic forms: the cup-shaped tazza and the bell-shaped campana. Planters and fountains are rarer and therefore pricier; planters often have had a different previous use—for example, as a watering trough.

“Pricing is a function of age, rarity, form and materials,” Young explains. “A hand-carved marble urn costs a lot more than a cast-iron urn, for example.” Young reports that urns start at $900 and go up to $15,000. Single planters fetch from $400 up to $10,000. Fountains begin at $2,000 to $3,000 and can go as high as $500,000, though the most expensive fountain Young carries is $45,000. The value of these treasures can also be affected by functionality—fountains often must be restored with new plumbing in order to make them work. Other factors are aesthetic appeal, the presence of a signature or stamp, and condition. Pieces can be restored but should not be over-restored, says Preston. “A bit of weathering contributes to the charm of a piece,” he notes, “because it shows that it has age and history.” A garden serves, after all, as a sanctuary in which we shed the cares of a busy routine—and maybe a couple of centuries too.

country charm meets seaside style

An East Hampton summer home reflects the pairing of two tastes IF ONLY THEY’D HAD MORE TIME. Designer Joey Tesalona and his partner of 11 years, Jeffrey Urr, found, bought and planned their summer home in New York’s East Hampton together but didn’t have long to enjoy it—Urr died of cancer soon after its completion. Now the house is a reminder of how their different tastes happily meshed. Tesalona had wanted the country, while Urr had preferred a coastal location. Luckily, the couple found something that would satisfy both: a three-bedroom, two-bath home set in a wooded locale a mere five minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. “We were very blessed to both get what we wanted,” says Tesalona. The next task was to add new life to the house’s dark, simple interiors. Here again, Tesalona wanted a rustic country décor, while Urr liked a crisp beach feeling. Striking a balance between the two styles was an apt challenge for Tesalona, who has designed interiors while working as a visual merchandiser for Frette and Felissimo Design House and has since launched his own firm. To do

so he paired tailored, clean-lined furnishings with one-of-a-kind finds from flea markets and garage sales. Tesalona’s work often embodies this harmonious juxtaposition. “I love mixing antiques and modern pieces,” he says. “And I’ve always loved the contrast of rustic and luxury.” That comes into play in the light-filled living room, where a dilapidated wooden coffee table stands among a linear sofa and club chairs upholstered in fine linen. The country-inspired den takes on a similar look with an additional white sofa and curtains set against dark-wood paneled walls. Varied tones of brown throughout the room tie it all together. Compared to the neutral palette in the living areas, the bedrooms are alive with color. A cool, calming blue envelops the master bedroom, where a lattice architectural element used as a headboard adds richness to the boxy space. Once again, Tesalona opted for white furniture. “The white furnishings give contrast to the color,” he says, “without losing that style of the beach and the summer.” The same look is carried through the sunny yellow and provincial red guest rooms. All the beds are outfitted in crisp white Frette linens, a nod to Tesalona’s time working for the luxury bedding company. The finishing touch in each room is a bouquet of fresh flowers. “No matter how beautiful your design, if you don’t bring in any natural things, it’s just kind of bland,” he says. “It’s like a Chanel dress with no accessories.” For the newly added outdoor entertaining area, Tesalona designed a pool with a black lining to appear like a pond and blend in with the lush surroundings. An outdoor eating area was a must for dining al fresco, and an assortment of lounge chairs provides poolside seating.

A Holmdel home trades dated hipness for timeless Asian serenity

A STRONG DESIGN STATEMENT—there’s no doubt the home in Holmdel, New Jersey, made one. Problem was, it was as dated as disco. Built in the 1970s, the interior featured a Brady Bunch staircase, orange shag rug and zigzag fabrics throughout the living room. Its exterior wasn’t in great shape either following a bank foreclosure on the neglected property. Seemingly destined to remain an eyesore in its upscale neighborhood, the house was in need of someone who could see its essential merit amid the chaos. It found such an owner in Jana Manning, principal of Ocean Grove– based Manning Design Group. Her intuition told her the 5,000-squarefoot home’s potential was attainable if it reconnected with its natural spirit—the surrounding environment. Drawing on her fascination with Asian cultures and intense devotion to yoga, Manning did just that. “This home is harmonious with the land,” she says. “The neighborhood, with its mature trees and hills, lets nature be the star. The house was beautifully planned to go with its surroundings. And I saw a calming spirit within the architecture—despite the riotous colors inside the space.” And so Manning poured her soul into creating a Zen masterpiece, which took two and a half years to complete. The design incorporates serene color palettes, clean lines, repetition of materials and dramatic minimalist features. She replaced all of the floors, cabinetry and other traces of the 1970s. The only remaining interior feature: a recurring stucco theme in each room, an extension of the home’s exterior. Asian influences such as oversize plants, bamboo art and corkscrew willows are subtly woven throughout each room, and there’s lots of red, which is Thailand’s national color. The home’s main attraction is a sunken living room that frames a

natural quartzite fireplace. The room is dominated by floor-to-ceiling rectangular windows, tall ceilings, prominent beams, dark cherry moldings, white walls and beige upholstery and window treatments. During the day, natural light filters into the living room through 19-foot-high windows. At night, warm lighting blends seamlessly into grazed cherry-wood texture themes. Manning enhanced the openness of the home by eliminating claustrophobic hallways in favor of accessibility. The upstairs “hallway” is a skywalk with wide-open views of the living room below and the trees outside. There’s a strong Thai flavor, with hand-woven silk fabrics and handcrafted furniture, including living room tables from Nandhana Borisoothi, a renowned dealer in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Manning purchased the furniture on travels to Thailand, which were frequent in her previous career as a senior fashion executive for Givenchy, Ralph Lauren and Kenneth Cole. (She passed time on the long flights by practicing yoga and meditating for up to 18 hours.) “I’d seen it all in the fashion world, so I wanted to switch to a career that touched people’s lives directly,” says Manning. “I believe interior design spaces should nurture people’s souls and replenish their spirit for what they may face the next day.” Previews

BACKYARD RESPITE from John R. Conte It was a challenge to balance the elegance of a Georgian-style house with the rustic design of this outdoor entertaining space in Greenwich, Connecticut, but architect John R. Conte of Conte & Conte, Greenwich, did so seamlessly. “It’s a very formal home,” he says, “but the owners wanted to keep the landscape—especially the backyard—a bit less formal.” He created the oval-shaped pool and pergola to make the space more casual. The stone fireplace with built-in pizza oven serves as a cozy gathering spot for a crowd. CONTINUED

AN AIR OF SOPHISTICATION from Douglas VanderHorn Building a house on 11 acres of wooded preserve was no easy feat for architect Douglas VanderHorn of Hilton VanderHorn Architects, Greenwich, Connecticut, but the result was worth the effort. And the purpose of this country-style al fresco dining area in Greenwich was to serve as an extension of the already comfortable indoor living space. “The concept for the back of the house was to create a transitional space between the interior and the exterior,” he says. The porch wraps around the corner of the family room and attaches to the breakfast room, allowing the owners to enjoy fresh air with their morning coffee.

The owners of this Bernardsville, New Jersey, home wanted multiple outdoor spaces to entertain throughout the seasons, so they solicited the help of architect William Kaufman of WESKetch Architecture, Millington. “This space is one of several that invite the indoors out,” says Kaufman. The enveloping architecture supplies a natural sun- and windshield, and the stunning view of the easterly landscape provides a calming backdrop for socializing.
