If you’re dining out these days in Nashville, whether you realize it or not, you’re probably sitting in a Strategic Hospitality establishment.

and Max Goldberg, whose mission for 12 years has been to shape the city’s dining landscape by continually introducing one-of-a-kind concepts.

“Nashville is one of the most exciting and supportive cities in the world and has allowed us to pursue our passion based on where we would go and what we think will add value to the city,” explains Max. So far, the pair have succeeded spectacularly, with eight existing eateries in their portfolio. Housed in one of the city’s most historic buildings dating back to 1892, Merchants incorporates a first-floor bistro featuring a lively atmosphere and casual cuisine, while the second floor offers finer fare and a more intimate feel. (The third floor is reserved for special events.)

Henrietta Red is helmed by Nashville native Julia Sullivan, showcasing her flair for contemporary cooking with a focus on seasonal ingredients. Le Sel is an elegant and slightly quirky French brasserie (check out the scuba-clad French bulldog that serves as the restaurant’s mascot) in the heart of Midtown. Another Midtown favorite, The Patterson House, specializes in craft cocktails using fresh-squeezed juices, house-made syrups and eight types of ice with an often-changing menu of delicious small plates.

At The Catbird Seat, 22 bar seats surround a U-shaped kitchen where Chef Ryan Poli and his team prepare your meal as you watch. Bastion, a brick-walled spot in Houston Station, aims to be a comfortable meeting place for neighborhood artists and entrepreneurs, while at Pinewood Social play is encouraged, whether that means bowling or singing karaoke. Sports fans flock to The Band Box, located in the new First Tennessee Park. This one-of-a-kind outdoor bar and restaurant offers a large variety of entertainment options including Ping Pong, cornhole, foosball and shuffleboard. The company also owns Aerial, an extraordinary event space where a private elevator transports diners to a rooftop sanctuary, featuring a 2,000-square-foot glass-encased room surrounded by an additional 2,000-square-foot outdoor patio.

“It’s been really exciting to be a part of the fabric that makes this community so special,” says Max. “And we look forward to everything that’s still to come!”

Memphis natives Michael Hudman and Andrew Ticer, who became best

Most sixth graders dream of being pro athletes, firemen or astronauts, but Michael Hudman and Andrew Ticer had other ambitions.

friends even though they went to rival grade schools, knew they wanted to become restaurateurs. “We both come from big Italian families and spent our Sundays helping our grandmas make Sunday suppers. We’ve always had a deep appreciation for food and family,” notes Hudman.

To say they made their dreams come true is an understatement. After apprenticing in such noted restaurants as Frank Grisanti, Chez Philippe (in the famed Peabody Hotel) and Encore, the pair began planning their first Memphis eatery: Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, which opened on Halloween in 2008.

“We wanted to bring back to Memphis what we learned in Italy, specifically the importance of using totally seasonal and garden-fresh ingredients as well as honoring our family traditions,” Hudman recalls. When we first opened, the restaurant was closed on Sundays and my family would sit around the bar hand-making my grandmother’s ravioli. It’s one of the items (Maw Maw’s ravioli) that never leaves the menu, though we change much of what we offer four to six times a year.”

The most formal of their four Memphis restaurants, complete with a multi-course tasting menu, Michael Anthony Kitchen has evolved with the times, including an expanded bar menu that offers an entire section called “Giardini,” devoted to stunning vegetable preparations, alongside more traditional antipasti.

As the Memphis food scene grew, the friends expanded their empire. Their casual, high-energy eatery Hog & Hominy, known for small plates, pizzas and inventive cocktails, gained them national attention and a broader customer base. “People found it more approachable and loved the farm-to-table vibe,” says Hudman.

Next came Porcellino’s Craft Butcher; the pasta-centric Catherine & Mary’s, located on the first floor of the historic Hotel Chisca; and The Gray Canary, inside the Old Dominick Distillery, where the focus is on seafood (one of their first loves) and open-hearth cooking.

“We now employ 180 people and serve thousands of people every week. It’s amazing,” says Hudman. “But as I tell everyone, there’s nothing you can’t achieve if you’re willing to work hard—and have fun at the same time.”

Alex and Mike Faherty left their corporate careers to create a successful brand.

Oh, BROTHERS! In five years, twins Alex and Mike Faherty have catapulted their apparel company to national success.

Just as young authors draw from their own lives as inspiration for a first novel, then-30-year-old twins Alex and Mike Faherty looked no further than their own clothing needs back in 2013 when they gave up their careers in finance and design to launch an eco-friendly men’s swimwear collection.

Five years later, Faherty has evolved into a fast-growing men’s and women’s contemporary apparel business, with $25 million in gross revenue (almost all of which goes back into the company). Retails range from $55 for a T-shirt to $400 for a cashmere sweater, with the average item costing about $120.

“There’s no question the brand is an extension of us,” says Alex. “Mike and I think of ourselves as regular guys, so we make clothes that we—and our friends—want to wear. Of course, we’re always trying to give them a little extra style or a fresher color palette. Newness and modernity are definitely among our key words.”

Adds Mike: “While other new brands worry about being the coolest guys on the block, we’re more worried about comfort. We know that’s what the majority of our customers, especially guys, look for—not how ‘beautiful’ the clothes are. We develop our own fabrics in China and India. When people feel our clothes, they immediately notice the softer hand. It helps us stand out.”

As the brothers readily admit, their journey has been largely trial and error.

“We had no idea what we were doing at first,” confides Alex. “We had our mobile store-cum-trailer that we drove around the country to do in-store appearances.

We basically fought and clawed for the first two years to make our way in an industry that isn’t always welcoming to new brands.”

What helped them most was their strong belief in customer service. “It sounds corny, but customer satisfaction is what we live for,” says Mike. “It’s why we offer a lifetime guarantee. Nothing eats us up more than if we get a complaint. And I think people respect the fact that we’re still very hands-on. We spend time in the stores, we respond to our own Instagram account; there’s a level of authenticity to our business that our customers seem to appreciate.”
