Photographer Harry Benson took this striking photo of late Amy Winehouse at The Savoy hotel in London in 2007. He remembers being impressed by the singer’s “European, oldfashioned manners.”“There was no coarseness,” says the photographer, who’s the subject of the Magnolia Pictures documentary Harry Benson: Shoot First, available on Netflix. “She served a cup of tea to everyone on the shoot and poured herself a cup last.”

By that time, Benson was already more than familiar with the world-famous singer: A decade before, he was a part of The Beatles’ inner sanctum as they approached world domination. Benson’s photos from that era are featured in his book, The Beatles on the Road 1964-66, just reprinted by Taschen.

Some fussy homeowners may insist on a “no pets” policy, but others are happily sharing their abodes with man’s best friend—including some who create flawless living spaces for a living. In her new book, At Home with Dogs and Their Designers, Susanna Salk presents several top interior decorators who have no fear of fur-dotted furniture—and, unapologetically, let their homes go to the dogs.

Mary McDonald shares her Los Angeles abode with five roommates—Jack, Lulu, Boris, Eva and Violet. When the pugs aren’t awaiting tea time in the drawing room or frolicking outside, some can be found lounging on overstuffed pillows—and awaiting their next snack. What’s on the menu? Mary says they love veggies, with baby carrots being a favorite.

This page: FoxyLady—aka Jonathan Adler’s pup—splits her time between NYC and Shelter Island (in between occasional retreats to Palm Beach). And while the mutt has a fancy Lucite dog bed, she can often found lounging on some of Alder’s mod furniture. Opposite page: Betsy Burnham says her dogs—Lola, a smooth-coat Chihuahua; Nina Garcia, a long-coat Chihuahua; and Felix, a Shih Tzu, Pomeranian and poodle mix are “totally spoiled.” “They get walked twice a day, they sun in the backyard on snappy little outdoor cushions, they sleep in our room, they’ve been to Mexico,” she says. And, apparently, they enjoy entertaining: Nina and Felix are always first to run to the front door, as shown, when visitors arrive at Burnham’s 1927 Roland Coate-designed house in the Hancock area of Los Angeles, traipsing across a vintage zebra hide that serves as the perfect entry rug.

But that doesn’t mean she’s territorial. “Occasionally,” says Bullard, “she is known to share the bed with a guest or two.” Opposite page: When Windsor Smith’s German shepherd—named Sur after the spectacular California spot—isn’t riding shotgun up and down the Pacific Coast Highway in a ‘66 convertible Corvette (a favorite pastime), he can be found patrolling Smith’s “great room,” resplendent with Ralph Lauren’s bone-black, high-gloss paint on the woodwork.

This page: Carolyne Roehm’s pack of pups—three Havanese dogs, a West Highland terrier, an Australian Kelpie and a Weaten terrier—has taught her the art of amnesty. “Things I would not easily forgive in a human—such as gnawing on the carved stretcher of a signed piece of eighteenth-century furniture (I know humans don’t exactly do that but you get my drift)—I forgive in my dogs,” she says. “I look into those sorry little eyes...and all is forgotten.” When the precious pooches aren’t chewing up Rohem’s Sharon, Connecticut home—which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has a name itself, the Weatherstone—some can be be found lounging in the reading/television room in front of a giant fireplace. And, as you can see, at least one likes to cuddle with a marble bust of a 19th-century emperor. Opposite page: Steven Gambrel’s Labradoodle, named Sailor Anderson Gambrel, favors the library of his NYC townhouse as a hangout but is shown here on the abode’s orginal staircase.
