The Retirement Countdown W
elcome to the latest edition of Fiscal Fitness! As the heavy heat of August fades along the Jersey Shore, a familiar seasonal shift begins. The beach crowds thin, the traffic slows, and the kids are headed back to school. If you are within five to ten years of retirement, this quiet transition offers a perfect window for a financial checkup. This yearly fiscal audit is a strategic opportunity to evaluate whether your wealth is positioned properly to support your desired lifestyle and financial security during retirement.
If you are nearing retirement, are you taking advantage of “catch-up” contributions in your employer retirement plan? This is a great opportunity to minimize your tax liability while making up for missed savings opportunities. “SUPER” CATCH-UP PROVISIONS If you are in your peak earning years, maximizing tax-advantaged accounts remains a priority for many. For individuals aged 60 to 63, the “Super” catch-up rule allows an additional $11,250 in contributions, pushing your maximum qualified plan limit to $35,750 per individual.1 Under current tax laws, high earners (FICA wages exceeding $150,000), must route these catchup contributions into a Roth 401(k). This requires careful, coordinated cash-flow planning between spouses to balance the need for tax deductions now, against future taxable and tax-free distributions from qualified plans. WHY TIMING MATTERS Sequence of Returns Risk is the risk of negative market returns during the first few years in retirement. Negative returns, combined with withdrawals, can erode capital much faster than anticipated. To help mitigate this risk, retirees should adopt a disciplined allocation strategy, maintain liquidity reserves for short-term needs, and implement a structured withdrawal plan designed to withstand market volatility. Income sourcing becomes increasingly complex at higher wealth levels. Should distributions be taken from taxable accounts first, or taxdeferred accounts such as IRAs and 401(k)s?
Would implementing strategic Roth conversions during a low-income tax year optimize your long-term wealth accumulation and tax strategy? How will the sale of appreciated real estate or concentrated stock positions impact your overall tax situation? Each decision carries long-term tax consequences. Coordinated planning early on can potentially reduce lifetime tax liability and preserve more capital for family or philanthropic objectives. THE RIPPLE EFFECT Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) demand careful attention and require proactive planning well before they begin. Because RMDs count as ordinary income, unmanaged distributions can easily push a high-net-worth individual or couple into the highest federal tax bracket. This income spike triggers expensive ripple effects, including steep Medicare premium surcharges (IRMAA) and maximum taxation on Social Security benefits. For individuals with philanthropic goals, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) starting at age 70½ offer a premier tax savings strategy. QCDs allow an individual to donate a maximum of $111,000 across one or more eligible charities directly from an IRA. If you are married and file a joint return, your spouse can also make a separate QCD of up to $111,000 from their own IRA, for a total of $222,000. Retirement income planning is complicated. A disciplined, forward-looking strategy can help transform accumulated wealth into a durable, tax-efficient income stream while protecting the legacy you intend to leave. If you are nearing retirement, this may be an opportune time to partner with an experienced CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional. Together, we can make it happen.

Experience, Expertise, Excellence: Achieving the Ideal End for Your Best New Beginning
A boutique firm that provides engaged, individual attention to its clients’ family law matters.
Who among us hasn’t daydreamed of giving a speech beginning “I’d like to thank the Academy”? I plead guilty, but as editor-in-chief I also have some real-life gratitude to express. That is to the indispensable source of MONMOUTH’s success: you, the readers. Maybe it’s corny to say “We owe it all to you.” But we’ve been publishing now for almost a quarter-century, and what better time to say thanks? We often write about you, our readers, quote you in articles, take tips from you about topics to cover. And your votes determine the winners of our annual Readers’ Choice feature, which you’ll find starting on page 23. Here are your selections for Monmouth’s best bakeries, breakfast spots, bookstores, boutiques—even some businesses that don’t begin with “B.” We see ourselves as an interactive community with readers, and in every issue we present information that makes your lives here in Monmouth County richer, fuller, healthier, more interesting and more fun. On page 18, we hear from four Monmouth readers (didn’t I say we listen to readers?) who, on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, recall how that fateful day touched their lives. We dare not forget. But remembering is for happy times too, as well as looking back on hard work that has paid off. On page 20, we speak with the executive director of the Jersey Shore Partnership, which for 35 years has been protecting the coastline so it remains as much a joy for future beachgoers as it has been for those of the past. And if our delicate shore is in the news, so are GLP-1s, the medications that are helping many individuals achieve dramatic weight loss. On page 16, we explain—drawing on a doctor’s knowledge—how they work, whom they’re for (or not), what they can (and cannot) do, and what their side effects can be. Want to give a charming garden party while the weather’s still warm? Get expert tutelage on page 36. Meet Lesley Luckhardt on page 12. She leads a group that helps retired and neglected horses who need a safe place to call home. And our Buzz section (pages 7 to 10) is its usual bouillabaisse of intriguing items, in this case cluing you in on where to get honey or a late-night meal, take your dog swimming along the shore, get fit with new friends or order satisfying Korean cuisine. Of course there’s much more in this issue, but I hear the orchestra giving me its subtle cue to leave the stage. So thank you again, and let’s all embark together on an autumn full of promise.

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTY.
A DAY OF SERVICE
Each Sept. 11, Americans come together not only to remember those lost in the 9/11 attacks of 2001, but also to honor their legacy through service to others. Designated the National Day of Service and Remembrance, the occasion is meant to encourage acts of kindness, volunteering in the communities and lending a hand to neighbors in need. A few ways to get involved: • Donate blood. Help restock local blood centers, which report low supplies this season. New Jersey Blood Services, Holmdel, 800.933.2566; nybc.org • Assemble care kits. Fill bags with toiletries, socks, snacks or school supplies for local shelters or nonprofits. Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Monmouth County, 732.774.6886; jfcsmonmouth.org

SWEET AS CAN BEE
Add it to tea, drizzle it on oatmeal, roast carrots in it or swallow a spoonful to ease a sore throat. No matter how you use honey, September is National Honey Month, when we celebrate this natural treat. (No coincidence it’s the month of Rosh Hashanah, when for observing Jews, apples dipped in honey represent a sweet and blessed new year.) Want to support local beekeepers? Here are four that can provide honey, beeswax products and insight into local bees and pollinators: • E&M Gold Beekeepers, 113 Hope Rd., Tinton Falls, 732.542.6528; emgoldbeekeepers.com • The Fir Farm, 166 Hillsdale Rd., Colts Neck; thefirfarm.com • Honeysuckle Nectary and Gardens at Calgo Gardens, 462 Adelphia Rd., Freehold, 908.652.6130; honeysucklenectary.com • Trapper’s Honey, 9 Olde Noah Hunt Rd., Clarksburg, 609.259.0051; trappershoney.com
GONE TO THE DOGS
It’s sad when Labor Day brings the end of guarded swimming at beaches, and there’s a reason that moment feels like end of summer. But there’s an upside—it means many beaches open up to our four-legged friends once again after a season of barring them. (During the peak summer season, even some “dog-friendly” beaches have limitations on the hours when they welcome canines.) So clip on Fido’s leash and enjoy a warm walk while the sun is still shining at these locales: • Asbury Park Dog Beach, Asbury Park • Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth • Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area, Manasquan • South End Beach, Ocean Grove • Spring Lake Dog Beach, Spring Lake

MAKING MEMORIES
Mentoring isn’t just about imparting lessons; it’s about sharing experiences that inspire confidence and spark curiosity. A once-ina-lifetime event can provide that opportunity, and that’s what this summer’s FIFA World Cup meant to the “bigs” and “littles” at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Coastal & Northern New Jersey. Through a partnership with the governor’s office and Airbnb, BBBSCNNJ mentors and children attended World Cup matches at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford June 30. Forty children in the program plus their “bigs” had the chance to attend. “Exposure to new experiences can expand a young person’s sense of what’s possible,” says William Salcedo, executive director of BBBSCNNJ. “We’re grateful to Governor Mikie Sherrill and Airbnb for enabling our youth to be part of this extraordinary event and create memories that will stay with them for years to come.”

TOP-RANKED SANDY SHORE?
Picking a favorite beach in Monmouth is tough—each has something different to offer, whether you’re craving a bustling boardwalk or the serenity of nature. But in a survey the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, an affiliation of colleges, universities and other groups dedicated to advancing knowledge and stewardship of the Garden State’s marine and coastal environment, asked respondents to do just that. The results? In 2026, Monmouth County’s favorite beach is Asbury Park. The runner-up was Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area. (Of course, AP draws visitors from near and far with its vibrant downtown and great nightlife too.)

PUPPY LOVE
Dog: Dottie, 4-year-old mini-Bernedoodle Owners: Briana and David Ayars of Belmar The Ayars added to their small but growing family in November 2022 when they brought Dottie home from Ohio, and the pup has been a bundle of joy ever since. According to “mom” Briana, Dottie knows nothing but affection. “She’s filled with love and never barks or gets angry,” Briana says. “She loves to give kisses and cuddles.” Like any good girl, Dottie also mixes plenty of play in between cuddles, never missing an opportunity to play hide-and-seek with her “dad.” Though she hasn’t mastered the game of catch, this pooch enjoys tennis balls as well as any squeaky toy and Nylabones (a durable chewtoy brand). When the family isn’t playing at home, you can catch all of them at the Spring Lake dog park or their favorite coffee shop, Turnstile Coffee Roasters in Belmar. Dottie’s dislikes? Loud noises, garbage trucks and any song by Ja Rule. “She means the absolute world to her family,” adds Briana. “She is the best dog in the world!” Want to see your furry friend in an upcoming issue of MONMOUTH? STRETCH INTO SOMETHING NEW
Grab your mat and get ready to flow. The Jersey Shore is welcoming a brand-new celebration of wellness, movement and community. The inaugural Jersey Shore Yoga Festival is coming to Red Bank’s Marine Park on Oct. 4, bringing together yoga lovers, wellness seekers and anyone looking to add a little more balance to their day. The half-day event will feature a lineup of local instructors and fitness leaders, as well as an opening meditation, 108 sun salutations led by Monmouth and Ocean County teachers, a closing “sound bowl” experience, live kirtan music and a curated marketplace. Whether you’re a relative newbie or a seasoned yogi, the festival’s a chance to slow down, recharge and connect with others. Some proceeds from ticket sales will benefit 180 Turning Lives Around, which supports survivors and families affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS
HORSE HELPER
Colts Neck’s Lesley Luckhardt and her husband give retired and neglected horses what every animal deserves: a safe place to call home. When Lesley Luckhardt and her husband Carl Quaglia moved to a Colts Neck farm in 2020, she envisioned a ranch filled with animals, not a horse sanctuary. But one arthritic mare in need of a home changed everything. Today, they own Bluemont Equine Rescue and Sanctuary, which provides a haven for dozens of horses as well as other rescued animals. Luckhardt, 46, says it’s become a mission for the entire family, including the couple’s four sons—C.J., 18; Aidan, 17; Cole, 7; and Greyson, 5. How did you get into horses? I grew up on a dairy farm in Indiana and loved to draw horses. But I had little experience with horses other than riding one with Girl Scouts. I was a covert horse girl for a long time. How did you end up in New Jersey? I was working for a real estate investment firm in Florida, where I met and married Carl. He’s originally from New Jersey and intended to move back. I missed the four seasons, so I told him I wanted a farm with a menagerie of animals if we moved. In 2020, we bought an old dressage farm in Colts Neck that needed remodeling and repairs. When did you realize you wanted to help horses? A neighbor told us about Roxy, a gorgeous, six-figure mare [worth more than $100,000] who couldn’t be ridden anymore due to arthritis. She’d lived in affluence, then ended up without a home. I had to take her in. My husband asked what I was doing, and I told him, “You look into Roxy’s eyes and tell her no.” I didn’t know much about horses,
so I got an education real fast. Roxy was a saint— so patient with me. How did Bluemont Equine Rescue and Sanctuary start? I immediately felt a calling with Roxy, and we decided to pursue a nonprofit and a safe place for retired and discarded horses to have a second life. Once word got out about us, the floodgates opened and Roxy got new friends. Today we have 50 horses as well as donkeys, goats—even turkeys. What is the daily routine at the rescue? It’s a full-time job for both of us. We have a skeleton crew for mornings, and we do a twohour “med pass” to check on the animals. The horses live naturally in the pasture; there’s shelter for them if they choose, but we let the horses be horses. The barn is for animals that need special care. By midday, we are doing administrative work, keeping up with fundraising and donor relations. All the heavy lifting is done in the afternoon: We have volunteers helping with chores like grooming, feeding, cleaning out paddocks. Your favorite part of the job? Horses are herd animals, and they’re often denied that experience when they’re used as show horses or work horses. When they come to us to live out the rest of their lives, there’s a shift in their eyes when they realize they’re free. I love to see them thrive. Are there any “characters” on the farm? They’re all individuals like humans. We joke that two of our horses, Moondog and Viva, are like a married couple—they get along with the others, but they’re inseparable and won’t let

anyone else between them! The hard part is matching their personalities with our volunteers’ personalities. How much do you rely on volunteers? We couldn’t do what we do without them. We have 65 volunteers who work at different times and in different capacities. They’re all animal people, but horses can be intimidating. We are happy to train those who don’t have experience. Is your family involved? This is our deal. C.J. just graduated high school, and he wants eventually to take over and continue what we’ve started. The kids do a lot of heavy lifting. We’ve sacrificed a lot. For instance, we can’t travel like other families because of the responsibilities. We’re all outside in rainstorms and blizzards. But I’ve seen how the work helps with the kids’ maturity. Favorite things to do in Monmouth? I’m a big reader—I love the library and Barnes & Noble. We love going to Bell Works in Holmdel, and we’ve grown attached to the swans at the Colts Neck municipal center. I’m also a coffee lover; I enjoy trying different coffee shops. Coffee Corral in Red Bank is great, and D.O. [Delicious Orchards] has the best latte in Monmouth County. What’s in store for you and Bluemont in the future? Hopefully more land so we can help more animals. I also want to do more advocacy and education and speak on panels. We have our annual fundraiser gala Oct. 17 at the American Hotel in Freehold, and we hope to keep that going and growing every year. —Darius Amos

A Conversation with DOREEN DEMARCO
FALL IS THE SEASON TO GET IT RIGHT Smart Strategies for Buyers and Sellers in Monmouth County As autumn settles across Monmouth County, the real estate market takes on a different pace. While summer may bring volume, fall attracts serious buyers and motivated sellers. For those planning a move before year’s end, preparation and strategy can make all the difference. According to veteran REALTOR® Doreen DeMarco, one principle consistently separates successful transactions from disappointing ones: preparation.
HELPING SELLERS STAND OUT
minor, but these details can influence a buyer’s perception of how well the home has been maintained.
“For sellers, first impressions matter more than ever,” says DeMarco. “The first few weeks on the market are critical.” Pricing a home correctly from the start is one of the most important decisions a seller can make. Homes that align with current market value attract stronger early interest, while overpriced properties often remain on the market longer and may ultimately sell for less. Fall also offers unique opportunities to create an emotional connection with buyers. Simple touches such as seasonal landscaping, a welcoming entryway, warm lighting, and tasteful décor can help buyers envision themselves living in the home. Inside, highlighting practical spaces like home offices, mudrooms, or flexible bonus areas allows prospective buyers to picture how the home supports their lifestyle. DeMarco also encourages sellers to address small maintenance issues before listing. A dripping faucet, scuffed wall, or clogged gutter may seem
Today’s marketing extends far beyond a yard sign. Professional photography, video tours, and targeted digital marketing are essential tools for generating interest and attracting qualified buyers.
GIVING BUYERS A COMPETITIVE EDGE For buyers, preparation begins long before viewing homes. DeMarco recommends obtaining full mortgage underwriting approval whenever possible, giving sellers confidence that financing is secure and the transaction can move forward smoothly. She also advises buyers to evaluate more than just the home itself. Commute options, schools, parks, recreation, and community amenities all contribute to long-term value and quality of life. Fall is an especially helpful time to evaluate a property’s condition, as cooler temperatures can reveal potential concerns with heating systems, drafts, or moisture issues.
Buyers should also investigate major components such as the roof and HVAC system and obtain insurance quotes early in the process. Understanding these factors upfront helps avoid surprises later. When it’s time to submit an offer, price is only part of the equation. Flexible timelines, clean contract terms, and a well-structured offer can often make a meaningful difference in a competitive situation.
EXPERIENCE MATTERS Having lived and worked in Monmouth County for more than 40 years, Doreen DeMarco has guided clients through every type of market. Her local knowledge, strategic approach, and commitment to personal service help buyers and sellers move forward with confidence. “Whether you’re buying or selling, the advantage almost always goes to those who plan ahead,” says DeMarco. “My goal is to help clients make informed decisions and achieve the best possible outcome every step of the way.”

ARE GLP-1s RIGHT FOR YOU?
THESE MEDICATIONS ARE BEING MARKETED AS THE NEW GOLD STANDARD IN WEIGHT LOSS. IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND WHO THEY’RE FOR—AND WHO THEY’RE NOT FOR. You’ve seen the commercials for them, read the news articles and lifestyle columns about their success and heard friends discussing them over lunch or at the water cooler. Maybe friends report taking them. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, more commonly known as GLP-1 medications and marketed under such names as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Trulicity, are one of the buzziest topics in the consumer medical space. That’s for good reason. They have been revolutionary in managing and controlling Type 2 diabetes, a chronic condition that can cause, among other things, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, kidney damage, nerve damage and hearing loss. Also, these medications have been proven to be an incredibly effective weight-loss mechanism and a treatment for obesity— and a fast one at that. Maurice Mosseri, M.D., Endocrinologist, Atlantic Health

defines a “healthy” BMI as between 18.5 and 24.9 percent. Depending on the medication and the person, patients using GLP-1s for weight loss lose an average of 10 to 15 percent of their body weight in a year; some patients lose more than 20 percent.
MECHANISM OF ACTION “GLP-1s work primarily in the gut, but also in the brain,” explains Maurice Mosseri, M.D., an endocrinologist who practices through Atlantic Health in Red Bank and Manalapan. “They affect the interaction of the two, enhance the way your body metabolizes food and push your body to secrete more insulin, so that you metabolize food in a more efficient way.” Specifically, the medications mimic the action of the natural GLP-1 hormone to stimulate insulin release, which lowers blood-sugar levels; block the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar; slow the rate at which food leaves the stomach, which helps prevent blood-sugar spikes after meals and contributes to a feeling of fullness; and act on the brain to create feelings of fullness and reduce hunger signals, which can lead to eating less. “They’re fantastic medications for diabetics,” the doctor says. “We’re seeing patients coming off insulin, losing weight and achieving a healthier lifestyle. They’re quickly becoming the go-to.” Besides being prescribed to patients with Type 2 diabetes, some GLP-1 medications are FDA-approved for weight loss in people with a BMI [body mass index] of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure or sleep apnea.” (See “Find Your BMI,” below.) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
A HOST OF BENEFITS For many, shedding that weight isn’t just a matter of vanity. Obesity is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease and heart attacks, says the CDC. It can lead to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which can cause liver damage and cirrhosis. Obesity can also cause joint problems and respiratory conditions such as asthma. But losing weight, despite its health benefits, is hard to do. GLP-1s make it significantly easier. Though not everyone who goes on these drugs will lose a significant amount of weight (every medication can affect different people differently), they’re a godsend for many. “When they work, they work really well,” says Dr. Mosseri. Beyond the primary benefits of blood-sugar control and weight loss, “they’re good for your heart and good for your kidneys,” the doctor says. “Cardiologists are starting to prescribe them to patients who are at a high risk for heart attacks.” GLP-1 medications can slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, help lower blood pressure and cholesterol and offer relief from sleep-apnea symptoms. For some, therefore, they offer a significant quality-of-life boost. ALSO NEEDED: LIFESTYLE CHANGES However, these medications are not a “one-shot fix-all,” according to Dr. Mosseri. “You still need to diet and exercise.” GLP-1s should be combined with healthy lifestyle changes for best and most sustainable results. Improving diet, addressing any unhealthy eating behaviors and, in particular, exercising are all vital. “It’s important to focus on building muscle, because these medications can cause you to drastically lose muscle mass,” Dr. Mosseri says. “You want to do weight-bearing muscle exercises. I jokingly tell my patients that they want to be picking everything up and putting it back down, but there’s truth to that. You don’t want cardio; you want muscle building specifically.” Dr. Mosseri also stresses the importance of a low-carb diet with lots of lean proteins. Increase the number of fruits, vegetables and whole grains you eat and opt for “smaller meal sizes,” says the doctor. Experts also suggest that you address any “emotional eating” habits you may have, seeking

support from a therapist if needed. In addition, sleep plays an important role in appetite regulation and overall health, so prioritizing getting enough will do a lot for you. (For adults, the CDC recommends seven hours or more.) GLP-1 medications are not the best choice for everyone. According to Dr. Mosseri, they should be avoided by people with a history of pancreatitis or alcoholism. Others who are not candidates? Individuals with severe gastrointestinal diseases such as gastroparesis, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and “anyone with anorexia or a history of severe eating disorder,” says the doctor. KNOW THE SIDE EFFECTS Like many medications, GLP-1s have potential side effects. “People commonly experience stomach or abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation,” says Dr. Mosseri. These effects are usually at their worst when one is starting the medication or increasing the dose; in many cases they lessen over time. Says our expert: “For those gastrointestinal symptoms, we recommend a lowfat, high-protein diet with smaller, more frequent meals.” Staying well-hydrated also helps. There is also a possibility of more severe side effects—pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), gallbladder problems such as gallstones, hair loss and sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and strength) have all been reported. Frequent check-ins with a primary care doctor are vital to maximizing the benefits of GLP-1s and minimizing the risks. Says Dr. Mosseri: “These are powerful medications. They can help a lot of people. But there are some patients who aren’t obese, don’t have diabetes and are just looking to drop a few pounds. This isn’t an appropriate treatment for them—it would be too much.” He adds: “I tell my patients to imagine losing 20 percent of their body weight and think about what that would look like. If you’re not comfortable with that, it’s not the right medication for you.”
FIND YOUR BMI To calculate your body mass index (BMI), divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. Or log onto the website of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (nhlbi.nih.gov), search “Calculate BMI” and enter your height and weight into the online calculator. And remember: As endocrinologist Maurice Mosseri, M.D., explains, GLP-1 medications are not intended for people who simply want to lose a few pounds for cosmetic reasons.

Never FORGOTTEN Twenty-five years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Monmouth residents still feel the shock waves. Four share their stories. Across Sandy Hook Bay, the New York City skyline
e hen d often tory ment. for r
presses against the horizon, as much a part of life here in Monmouth County as the beaches and the ferry. On Sept. 11, 2001, that skyline changed forever—as did the lives of all Americans, with Monmouth residents most especially included. One hundred forty-seven people from our county died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Monmouth County firefighters and other first responders rushed to the scene, or to Atlantic Highlands and Highlands to meet ferries carrying people, all of them covered in rubble and ash, who were evacuating the city. People gathered on the Sandy Hook coastline and stared across the water at the smoke, struck dumb in the face of what happened. Twenty-five years later, we’re still feeling the echoes. Families, friends and communities continue to mourn those who died. First responders carry the memories of what they saw—and the health issues that resulted from breathing in the chemicals and ash. Those who witnessed the events firsthand recall the images as indelible. And, all around Monmouth, memorials have been built to honor those lost. Here, four residents, all with deeply personal connections to the attacks, share their thoughts on this quarter-century anniversary:

“My husband, Michael Cioffi, was a firefighter with FDNY’s celebrated Engine 54/Ladder 4/Battalion 9 company. That house has the sad distinction of suffering the most losses on 9/11—they lost an entire battalion. While Michael survived, he ultimately lost his life two years ago to World Trade Center-related illnesses. “In the past, I always took Michael’s lead on how to commemorate the day. Sometimes he’d want to go to the firehouse; sometimes he’d want to go to Cape May; and sometimes he just wanted to stay home. Since losing him, I’ve found myself drawn to the commemoration in Long Branch, which is where we both grew up and where his dad served for many years as the mayor. I know that, whatever my kids and I do that day, Michael will always be standing beside us, and that he knows how proud we are of his service.”
— Sylvia Sylvia-Cioffi, Ocean Township
“On the morning of Sept. 11, I was working as a paramedic. My partner and I were treating a critically injured patient at the scene of a motor-vehicle crash. As we loaded the patient into a medical evacuation helicopter, the pilot suddenly told us they could not take off. I asked why, and he replied, ‘I’m not sure. We were just told that all airspace has been shut down.’ Moments later, the radio traffic intensified. The emergency alerts began. We were finding out that America had been attacked in real time. “I was later redeployed to the World Trade Center, arriving at approximately 2 a.m. on Sept. 12. Over the next several weeks, I worked on ‘the pile’ alongside thousands of first responders, recovery workers and volunteers. Like everyone there, I struggled to comprehend the evil we had witnessed and the overwhelming loss surrounding us. Whenever I stop and think about that day, it still feels like yesterday. I can still smell the air. I can still feel the grit covering my skin. “Several years later, I was honored to help design and build the Colts Neck 9/11 Memorial alongside an extraordinary group of other residents. Together, we created a place to honor the five Colts Neck residents we lost, while also remembering the thousands of innocent lives taken that day as well as the countless heroes who answered the call. The memories remain vivid. The loss is still profound. Yet so too are the courage, compassion and selflessness that emerged. “I remember those who never came home, those who continue to carry the physical and emotional scars and the families whose lives were forever changed. I pray for their continued healing, and I pray that we never forget—not only the tragedy of Sept. 11, but also the extraordinary strength, unity, and love that our nation showed in its aftermath.”
“I was just about to turn 27, living in Middletown, working in Midtown Manhattan. I took the train that morning, and we all saw there was a fire at the towers—but we thought it was just a fire. I remember hearing other commuters talk, and someone was going to get off at Newark and take the PATH to World Trade. I heard someone else say, ‘I was there in ’93 when the bombing happened; it’s going to be a mess. Just take the train to Midtown and take the subway down.’ That conversation probably saved that person’s life. “I got to the office, and it became obvious very fast that we needed to get out of the city. I met up with two friends, and we waited three hours to get the ferry to Hoboken. It was a beautiful, clear day, but you could look around and see snipers on the rooftops. Hoboken Station was filled with people who had been downtown. They were covered in rubble and dust and were being hosed down. They were standing there shivering, and other people were taking off pieces of clothing to give to total strangers. I gave someone my sweater. “I grew up in Middletown. A lot of parents didn’t come home that day. People I went to high school with didn’t. But looking back, what always sticks out to me is how kind people were to each other. Everyone wanted to help. They were offering apartments and homes to sleep in, the clothes off their backs. Middletown has a memorial and, every year, I go to the ceremony and listen to the names of people who died. I remember the people I knew.”

“I had recently been promoted to detective at the Atlantic Highlands Police Department, and I’ve also been in emergency services my whole life as a volunteer firefighter and with first aid squads. I was off from work that day, but I got a call from my friend telling me to turn on the TV, because a plane hit the World Trade Center. Nobody knew what was happening, but a call went out saying to get to the harbor for a medical emergency. We drove down, and—well, you didn’t need a TV if you were in Atlantic Highlands. You could see the smoke. “I remember there was a woman in a parked car in the middle of the road on First Avenue. We pulled up and she was almost catatonic, clearly in shock. Her husband worked in the World Trade Center, and she called him when the first plane hit. They were still on the phone when the second plane hit. The line went dead, and she knew. We helped her get in contact with family. “We set up a command center by the harbor and were meeting ferries that were coming in from downtown. People were absolutely covered in debris and dust, and we didn’t know anything—if it was radioactive or biological. We set up a decontamination unit, and I’ll never forget the pile of clothes at the end of the day. It was 15 or 20 feet high. I will also never forget how many people showed up to the harbor. Anyone with any kind of medical background, but also just regular people who asked how they could help. Two days later, I went to Ground Zero with the Middletown Fire Company. “I think Mount Mitchill is the perfect place for the Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial. It’s a tribute to how close and how involved Monmouth was that day. That view said it all.”

MILESTONES
GUARDIAN
OF THE SHORE THE NEW JERSEY SHORELINE CAN’T SPEAK FOR ITSELF. LUCKILY, THE JERSEY SHORE PARTNERSHIP HAS BEEN DOING IT FOR THE PAST 35 YEARS.
Pose the question “What is the Jersey Shore?” and the answer is, of course, “the 127 miles of beach fronting the Atlantic Ocean in our state, from Sandy Hook to Cape May.” It’s also the heart of tourism in New Jersey, an ecological wonder (the primary habitat for several species of birds and seals) and the home of the state’s busy fishing industry. The Shore is the year-round home of more than 1.5 million people, a thriving community of mom-and-pop business supporting those people and the source of countless, shining summertime memories for generations of people from around the Garden State and beyond. “Once you get its sand between your toes, the Jersey Shore is part of you,” says Grace Hanlon, a lifelong Shore resident who is now executive director of the Jersey Shore Partnership. For 35 years now, the Partnership has labored to protect the Shore, and to make sure it remains as much of a joy for future beachgoers as it has been for those of the past. “We are the leading advocacy organization for the Jersey Shore’s coastal protection, coastal resilience and tourism economy,” Hanlon says. She should know—before she took on this position, she served as the executive director of the state’s Division of Travel and Tourism during the Chris Christie administration. Founded in 1991 after that year’s devastating Halloween storm, the Jersey Shore Partnership has one goal: to guarantee that state and federal resources will always be available to protect and restore
New Jersey’s coast from storm damage. “Our leaders had the foresight to realize that, if we have a big storm and lose a lot of beach from it, we need to have funding in place at the state level to repair it,” Hanlon explains, “and we need to be able to get federal dollars for beach replenishment projects.” Beach replenishment is vital both for keeping Shore communities safe from coastal flooding and damage and for keeping the Shore open and thriving for visitors and locals alike. It involves dredging sand from offshore and pumping it back toward the coast to widen beaches. These projects are completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), whose services are in high demand. “You have all the shore towns in the United States jockeying for their place in line with the USACE, which is constantly surveying based on need and putting out bids,” says Hanlon. “There are only so many dredging machines to go around.” To say that the process can be lengthy and expensive would be an understatement. While the federal government funds a large portion of these projects (typically about 65 percent), the rest of that cost generally falls on the municipality affected. That’s where the partnership’s greatest and more enduring success comes in. In 1992, its advocacy pushed state legislation that established the Shore Protection Fund, which ensured that a portion of New Jersey’s yearly budget is always set aside to help fund beach replenishment and repair. The fund started out with $15 million; in 1998 it increased to
MONMOUTHMAG.COM
MON.0926.Milestones.indd 20
20
$25 million, where it stands today. “We always have matching dollars for the federal funds,” says Hanlon. “Fast-forward to now, and it’s a model that shore communities in other states wish they had put in place a long time ago.” This state funding supplements the federal funding, reducing the financial strain on local municipalities. Keeping the Shore Protection Fund fully funded and in the state’s budget is a constant work in progress. “We are always introducing ourselves to new legislators,” says Hanlon. “There are so many problems across the state that need attention; we need to make sure we stay at the front of people’s minds. We explain and educate about the importance of continuing to protect the Shore and have this fund, so that we keep our spot in line for USACE projects.” That work pays off. Says Hanlon: “I graduated from Holmdel High School. There used to be times when we would all watch the waves break over the sea wall and over Ocean Avenue in Monmouth Beach. Now that area is protected, because the beaches have been widened. That was possible because of this funding.” Hanlon attributes that success to the diversity of voices on the Jersey Shore Partnership’s board—“It consists of academics, elected officials, environmentalists, community leaders and leaders from the tourism industry,” she says—but also to how open and attentive legislators from both major parties have been to its outreach.

“We’ve had wonderful bipartisan support,” she says. “Year in and year out, Democrats and Republicans work across party lines for this cause. It really feels like an issue where everyone is in it together.” The partnership has also tried to foster that sense of togetherness, creating a Young Professionals Committee co-chaired by a young Democrat (Kinn Badger) and a young Republican (Jason Sena). It offers mentorship and leadership opportunities to budding advocates and politicians—while also teaching the importance of bipartisan support for coastal resilience efforts. “I’m proud of the civility we’ve modeled through the program,” says Hanlon. “It’s created genuine friendships between these young civic leaders.” It isn’t all work. The partnership’s annual Summer Celebration fundraiser, held at the start of the summer season, gathers leaders, businesses and coastal advocates together on Sandy Hook for a night of seafood, live music and dedication to the future of New Jersey’s shoreline. “People absolutely love it,” says Hanlon. “It sells out almost immediately most years. We have people coming up all the way from Cape May.” All the funds generated help ensure that New Jersey’s beaches stay resilient for years to come. “Politicians don’t run when they see us coming because they feel it too,” says Hanlon. “Atlantic County, Cape May County, Ocean County and Monmouth County are all represented and covered in our board with one mission: to be the voice of the Shore.”

The Greek Spot, multiple locations; thegreekspotnj.com With authentic Greek cuisine rooted in fresh ingredients and satisfying portions, The Greek Spot is a flavorful destination in Red Bank, Ocean Township and Manalapan. No matter where you dine, your taste buds will be convinced—from the appetizers like stuffed grape leaves or spanakopitakia (spinach pie), to homemade desserts like baklava and rice pudding. Of course, there are gyro platters, fresh falafel with pita, Greek paella and souvlaki, but The Greek Spot also serves native tastes by the bowl. Might we suggest the gyro bowl?

When Gardens Glow Why not celebrate end-of-summer splendor with an elegant table, fresh flowers and great friends?
Late summer lingers with a quiet grace. Zinnias still burst with color, the trees remain richly green and the day’s heat softens into golden afternoons. It’s the perfect season for a garden party, gathering friends around a beautifully lit backyard table. “I love how the sun shifts through the year, lighting the same evergreens in different ways, like they have had costume changes with the seasons,” author and Flower magazine editor Margot Shaw says in her newest book, Flowering Outdoors: Gardens & Parties. The natural spotlight highlights the linen napkins that flutter in the breeze and the flowers that brighten every surface. Fresh herbs, garden blooms and the gentle hum of nature also become part of the décor, reminding us that elegance often lives in effortless moments. “We love incorporating fresh greenery, seasonal blooms and natural textures like wicker, wood and linen,” says Phyllis Porter, owner of Elegant Creations in Middletown. “These elements instantly make the space feel warm and inviting without taking away from the beauty of the garden itself. As the sun begins to set, we recommend adding lanterns, candles or string lights throughout the space to create a soft glow that encourages guests to relax and enjoy the evening.” With thoughtful details, seasonal blooms and the company of good friends, a backyard gathering becomes more than a meal. It can be one of the season’s most memorable events, as shown in the example from Shaw’s book on the next few pages. To complement the lush green of the surroundings, the host of this East Hampton, N.Y., party topped the table with a bubblegum-pink, embroidered tablecloth by Carolina Irving & Daughters and magenta antique French damask napkins from Guinevere Antiques. Notes author Margot Shaw: “The chair frames recall the iconic, late 19th-century style but feature deeper seats for modern comfort.” MONMOUTHMAG.COM

This page, from left: Subtle details can be used to add pop and interest to the décor. Colorful linens, glassware and bold zinnias in ceramic vases adorn the dining table. A minibar is set up on scalloped metal consoles, which also hold Annabelle hydrangeas straight from the garden. In a clever nod to the coastal environs, oysters are served in a clamshell bowl. For another approach, Phyllis Porter, owner of Elegant Creations in Middletown, adds: “We typically start with a linen runner, woven chargers, simple white dinnerware and linen napkins for a look that feels timeless and effortless. We suggest floral arrangements in low vases, clear or colorful bud vases scattered down the table.” Opposite: A temporary structure or tent, such as this one by architects Richard Bories and James Shearron, can be used as a pool house and another lounging location. During summer, this structure blends in with the landscape. In colder months, it is stowed away until the following season.

SUMMER’S LAST H Eager to hold onto the season just a little while longer? One of five short trips may help.
The end of summer is always bittersweet. The kids head back to school, the house quiets down, routines become a bit stricter and cooler days lie ahead—but they’re not here yet. Though we treat Labor Day like the closing of the season, fall doesn’t officially begin until Sept. 22. We still have a few weeks left before the leaves start to turn and we all start craving pumpkin spice. This year, don’t let the last bit of summer slip through your fingers. The destinations here, none too far, all offer an opportunity for one last taste of your favorite seasonal pleasures. So go chase one more perfect day—you won’t regret it when the weather gets cold!

LAST SHORE TRIP: LONG BRANCH
A late season visit to one of the Jersey Shore’s trendiest boardwalks may be even more desirable than a visit at summer’s peak, and it’s right here in Monmouth County. The crowds thin out significantly (and finding a parking spot becomes much less of a chore). Though guarded ocean swimming ends after Labor Day, beaches are still open and accessible—you’re welcome to set up a towel, touch up your tan so that it lasts a few more weeks, search for shells and take a walk while the surf laps at your feet. Remember that dogs are not allowed on the beach until Oct. 1, so Fido will have to wait until then. Craving some waves? Shore staple Jetty Surf holds its Surf Club all day every Sunday starting at 8 a.m. with instructors, loaner equipment and community vibes; and all levels are welcome. And Long Branch’s boardwalk and Pier Village are what really make this a destination worth driving to in September. Browse bespoke, high-end boutiques, offering everything from designer sunglasses and dresses to pet accessories to small-batch hot sauces. Or take a class at Blue Skies Pottery and bring home a treasure you created yourself. Where to eat. If you want a high-end feel and incredible views, look no further than Rooney’s Oceanfront on the boardwalk, where the menu is seafood-heavy. (You can make your own “fish board” and customize that seafood so it’s just your taste, from fish to preparation to sauce.) The raw bar is impressive, everything has a high-end twist and you dine to the soothing sound of waves (or the music of a great local band—check the website for whose playing). Keep your eye out for the seasonal cocktail menu, and don’t forget the homemade key lime pie for dessert. More info: longbranch.org; piervillage.com

LAST MUSIC FESTIVAL: ALL THINGS GO, FOREST HILLS STADIUM, QUEENS
This festival certainly has an appropriate name for one last great summer memory. Originally held only in Maryland, it expanded in 2024 to include a NYC location—to equally rave reviews—that is about two hours away from our county. This year it runs Sept. 25–27, and the lineup is a joyful mix of pop, indie rock, indie hip-hop and electronic dance music. Everything you’ll listen to here is upbeat and danceable and goes great with bright colors, a cold drink and some glitter. (Standouts include Canadian pop darling Carly Rae Jepsen, 11-time Grammy winner Brandi Carlile and indie favorite Muna.) Grab your spot, nab a drink from one of the many in-arena vendors and enjoy. You’ll also be getting an up-close look at one of New York’s top outdoor music venues. The Forest Hills Stadium has not only been rocking for more than 100 years (and hosted the likes of The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix), but also boasts beautiful architecture and unobstructed views of the stage from nearly every angle. It’s nestled into a walkable, picturesque neighborhood, perfect for a leisurely wander. Where to eat. For a full meal, Aged Steakhouse is a close-by favorite, offering steak, burgers, wings and classic pasta dishes. For something quicker, Gloria Pizza will have you in and out fast and offers an impressive NYC pizza bite. A sweet treat to end the day? Aigner Chocolates shows up on local “best of” lists regularly, and the truffles are to die for. More info: allthingsgofestival.com

HURRAH LAST OUTDOOR ADVENTURE: PATERSON GREAT FALLS & GARRET MOUNTAIN RESERVATION, PATERSON & WOODLAND PARK
LAST BOAT TRIP: LAKE HOPATCONG
If you haven’t seen the falls at this national natural landmark, you should move it to the top of your to-do list—it’s about an hour-andhalf-away. Among U.S. waterfalls, this one is the second-largest east of the Mississippi (second to Niagara). It is 77 feet high and 260 feet wide, more than 2 billion gallons of water rush over it daily—and it offers truly breathtaking views, often topped with a rainbow from the airborne water particles. If you just want to see the falls, there’s an easy, mile-long hike (a half-mile in one direction, and then the same back) that will take you to some of the most stunning spots—the pictures will be worth it. If you stop by on Wednesday through Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., you can join in an in-depth tour given by a park ranger. Something a little more challenging? A short drive away is the Garret Mountain Reservation, filled with longer hikes and just as many great views. The Yellow-and-White Loop trail is a popular option—it’s about three miles at only a moderate difficulty, and will take you past a historic observation tower and beautiful lakes. Where to eat. For an authentic taste of Peru executed with a high-end gastropub sensibility, stop by Leña y Carbón. Standout options on that menu run the gamut from ceviche to a whole fried lenguado fish served with white rice and fried cassava, topped with cilantro. For lighter bites, head instead to Silk Café. Grab a restorative coffee, iced or hot, a soothing matcha latte or a cold specialty refresher to keep you feeling good after your hike. More info: nps.gov
New Jersey’s largest body of fresh water can be a great experience on a sunny September day. Your choices are legion at this Morris County escape, also about an hour-and-ahalf by car. Want to rent a boat? There are Lake Hopatcong Boat Club, Bridge Marina and Dow’s Boat Rental for starters. Prefer to charter? Many of those same marinas also offer that service, or take a trip with Lake Hopatcong Cruises for a more fully catered experience that may include music, food and specific views, depending on the package. For a more adventurous take on boating, there’s Wake Club New Jersey, which offers kayak and paddleboard rentals in addition to a “wakeboat watersports” experience, where an expert will drive the vessel and you get to wakesurf, wakeboard, water-ski or tube behind. If you have your own small craft, there are numerous boat launches and a beautiful coastline—Hopatcong State Park comes equipped with picnic tables, grills and ideal places to fish. Where to eat. Embrace a slower pace here at The Windlass, where the dining room opens up onto stunning water views and happy hour has people coming back for more. The seasonal menu is always updating (so keep your eye out for something new!), but the fried ravioli appetizer and Berkshire pork chop entrée always impress. The dessert menu features an assortment of high-end port wines, house-made gelato, cannoli cake and Oreo cheesecake, so make sure you save room! More info: lakehopatcong.com

LAST THRILL: LEGOLAND, GOSHEN, N.Y.
The modest size and sedate pace of this theme park make this ideal for families with younger children, but the fun is very big—and it’s about two hours away from Monmouth. You’ll find roller coasters and rides—from the Dragon, a small, steel roller coaster that’s sure to thrill, to the “brick party” carousel where you ride motorcycles, tigers and giraffes made from giant LEGO blocks. Eager builders can also take part in the LEGO Ferrari Build & Race experience and visit a life-sized Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider created from more than 500,000 LEGO bricks (perfect for a quick photo), and then head to the build zone and create their own (much smaller, of course) LEGO cars before racing them on provided tracks. There’s also a kids-sized “driving school” filled with go-carts and the always popular Factory Adventure Ride, where the whole family is “shrunk down” to the size of a miniature LEGO figure and gets to see the process of the blocks being made—in a city of giant bricks! Where to eat. You needn’t leave this park if you get hungry, and now is a great time to enjoy one last bite of fair food before we start craving the tastes of fall. Funnel cake, cotton candy, soft pretzels and frozen treats are among the choices, along with hot dogs and orange chicken bites if you want something a little more substantial. Outside the park, a quick drive away is Kelley Jean’s, which takes on bar classics and comfort food with playful, fun twists (try the specialty Irish nachos, topped with slow-cooked corned beef, cheddar cheese sauce and green onions). DIRECTIONS Prepare ribs: In small bowl, combine garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, chili garlic sauce, salt, ginger, cloves and mustard. Rub mixture over ribs; cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight. Preheat outdoor grill with all the burners on high. Once preheated, turn off 1 of the burners for a 2-burner grill, or center burner for a 3-burner grill. Reduce remaining burners to medium low. Place ribs over unlit part of the grill; cover and cook 1½ to 2 hours or until meat easily pulls away from bone, turning every 20 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare hoisin-plum BBQ sauce: Place plums over lit part of grill; cook 10 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking. Remove plums from grill; let cool and cut into ½-inch pieces. In small saucepot, heat hoisin, onions, vinegar, soy sauce, ketchup, sesame oil and plums to simmering over medium heat; simmer for 20 minutes. Makes about 4 cups. Turn all burners to medium-high heat. Brush ribs with sauce; turn and cook 2 minutes. Brush ribs with sauce; turn and cook an additional 2 minutes. Serve ribs with remaining sauce; garnish with onions, if desired.
“To reduce the added sugar, replace the hoisin sauce with unsweetened plum purée or no-sugar-added tomato sauce while keeping the grilled plums for natural sweetness. This swap lowers the sugar without sacrificing the sauce’s rich, fruity flavor.” —Julianna Szatmari, registered dietitian nutritionist, Intuitively Nourished, Eatontown

SEARED DUCK BREAST WITH CHERRIES AND PORT SAUCE Yields 2 servings INGREDIENTS 2 6-oz. duck breast halves or one 12-oz.duck breast half 2 Tbs. (1/4 stick) chilled butter, divided 1/4 cup shallot (about 1 large), finely chopped 1/2 cup low-salt chicken broth 8 halved sweet red cherries, pitted, fresh or frozen (thawed) 2 Tbs. tawny Port 1 Tbs. orange blossom honey
DIRECTIONS Place duck breast halves between 2 sheets of plastic wrap. Pound lightly to even thickness (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch). Discard plastic wrap. Using sharp knife, score skin in 3/4-inch diamond pattern (do not cut into flesh). Can be made 8 hours ahead. Cover and chill. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle duck with salt and pepper. Add duck, skin side down, to skillet and cook until skin is browned and crisp, about 5 minutes. Turn duck breasts over, reduce heat to medium and cook until browned and to desired doneness, about 4 minutes longer for small breasts and 8 minutes longer for large breast for medium-rare. Transfer to work surface, tent with foil to keep warm and let rest 10 minutes. Meanwhile, pour off all but 2 tablespoon drippings from skillet. Add shallot to skillet and stir over medium heat 30 seconds. Add broth, cherries, Port and honey. Increase heat to high and boil until sauce is reduced to glaze, stirring often, about 3 minutes. Whisk in 1 tablespoon cold butter. Season sauce to taste with salt and pepper. Thinly slice duck. Fan slices out on plates. Spoon sauce over and serve.
“If you’re looking to boost the fiber of this meal, serve the duck with a side of roasted Brussels sprouts, green beans or a whole grain, like quinoa or farro. These additions help create a more satisfying, nutrient-dense meal while complementing the rich flavor of the duck.” —Julianna Szatmari, registered dietitian nutritionist, Intuitively Nourished, Eatontown

AVIATION STEWARDSHIP ALAN ANTAKI, OWNER MONMOUTH EXECUTIVE AIRPORT
4870 West Hurley Pond Rd., Wall, NJ 07719 | 732.751.0044 | monmouthjetcenter.com AVIATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN PART OF ALAN ANTAKI’S DNA. Inspired by his commercial-pilot father, Alan was skydiving by age 15 and flying by 16. Although his dream of becoming a Navy pilot was cut short by his eyesight, his passion for aviation never wavered. That passion led him on a decade-long journey to acquire Monmouth Executive Airport and create a flourishing airport terminal known as the Monmouth Jet Center. Monmouth Executive Airport is one of New Jersey’s few remaining privately-owned, public-use airports. After years of complex negotiations involving environmental challenges that caused other prospective buyers to walk away, Alan finalized the purchase in 2013. This purchase preserved the airport’s and Wall Township’s legacy as it transitioned from the Brown family, owners since 1938, to the Antaki family. Today, Monmouth Executive Airport is far more than a runway. It serves as a vital hub for medevac flights, organ transplant missions, military operations, law enforcement, corporate aviation, and flight training. Under Alan’s leadership, and with the increasing help of his wife Suzanne and children Kiersten, Natalia, and Max - all of whom are taking flying lessons – the airport continues to grow. The airport is New Jersey’s only privately owned airport to finance its own, more pilot friendly FAA instrument approach procedures – an important distinction – as these investments are typically publicly funded. Monmouth County is benefitting well from these private investments as the resulting job growth and infrastructure improvements will make Monmouth Executive Airport one of the county’s biggest economic engines. What’s next, you ask? The main runway will be resurfaced in September with a partial grant from the NJDOT. Whether welcoming military personnel with a complimentary meal or planning for the airport’s future, the Antaki family remains committed to ensuring this vital community resource continues to serve Monmouth County and New Jersey for generations to come.

WHEN IT COMES TO AESTHETIC TREATMENTS, Briana Germano believes confidence is the most beautiful result of all. That philosophy is the driving force behind The Aesthetic Bar, a boutique med spa where personalized care, natural-looking enhancements, and genuine relationships take center stage. Unlike larger practices, every treatment is in the well-trained hands of Briana herself. From injectables and skin rejuvenation to the newest addition, laser hair removal, she delivers care with the precision, artistry, and attention to detail that's earned her a loyal following. Briana's path began in plastic surgery where years of experience working alongside respected surgeons sharpened her clinical skills and fine-tuned her aesthetic eye. Inspired by her daughter to demonstrate the importance of hard work, resilience and passion, she transformed that experience into one of New Jersey's rising boutique spas. Briana continues to redefine the med spa experience to feel luxurious, yet approachable and deeply personal. Her mission extends far beyond helping patients look their best. She empowers them to feel confident, comfortable, and authentically themselves. As The Aesthetic Bar continues to grow, so does Briana's vision by expanding her influence through mentorships, education, innovation, and results that enhance your beauty both inside and out.

A board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Taylor believes aesthetic medicine is about helping patients become the healthiest, most confident version of themselves. Instead, he helps patients understand that lasting results start with overall wellness, educating them about nutrition, fitness, weight management, and safe, sustainable options that build a strong foundation for aesthetic success. That philosophy is shaping the next evolution of his Red Bank practice with the launch of Allure Aesthetics & Wellness. To advance this new holistic model of care, Dr. Taylor is expanding his expertise to safely prescribe GLP-1 medications and peptides through a trusted pharmaceutical partner, helping patients navigate their weight-loss journey with expert medical guidance. His goal is to prioritize a comprehensive healthy lifestyle by combining wellness and aesthetics. As Dr. Taylor often says, “We not only want our patients to be happy, but healthy and feeling like a refreshed reflection of themselves.” That philosophy remains at the heart of everything he does, always.

FINDING RELIEF FROM DEBILITATING FACIAL PAIN Penny Prosperi’s journey from initial symptoms to diagnosis and successful treatment of a condition that causes severe facial nerve pain was a long one—15 years, to be exact.
ABS_PartnerContent_SP_MON_0926.indd 28
It began with occasional ear pain. A few years later, Denville resident Penny Prosperi noticed that the back of her mouth would sometimes feel numb. Or she’d touch her lip and wouldn’t feel anything. She knew something odd was going on, but none of these issues seemed urgent. Plus, life was busy. She was a licensed social worker and an adjunct at Seton Hall University with a passion for pickleball and shopping. Penny also helped administer support groups for rare medical disorders at Saint Clare’s Self-Help Group Clearinghouse. She remembers her boss talking about setting up a national support group for trigeminal neuralgia. Having never heard of the condition, Penny asked what it was. “Nothing you’d ever want,” her boss replied. As she learned more about this chronic nerve disorder that causes shock-like facial pain, she thought, “Well, I’m glad I don’t have that.” Unaware that she was experiencing the first signs of this condition, Penny visited her dentist, suspecting a

PARTNER CONTENT TMJ (jaw joint) disorder, which was quickly ruled out. NUISANCE PAIN BECOMES EXTREME
I was so happy to be able to give Penny the relief she deserves so she can go back to enjoying the simple things in life.”
Things took a turn for the worse four years ago when Penny went on a trip with some friends and suddenly found herself in unbearable pain. “I couldn’t eat or drink,” she says. “I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t talk. The pain was excruciating.” She returned to the dentist, who delivered the diagnosis: trigeminal neuralgia. She ended up in the emergency room at Morristown Medical Center, but there wasn’t much the ER staff could do for her. They administered a shot of valium and told her to see a specialist.
– Dr. Stephen Johnson, neurosurgeon at Atlantic Brain and Spine
A combination of several medications relieved her pain temporarily, but in October 2025, her symptoms came raging back. By this point, Penny had become the co-leader of the New Jersey trigeminal neuralgia support group for the Facial Pain Association. She knew that most people with this condition end up undergoing surgery, but many people reported side effects like deafness or trouble walking. Now, however, her fear of constant pain outweighed her fear of having surgery. Penny scheduled an appointment with Dr. Gary Heir, an orofacial pain expert at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She had seen Dr. Heir earlier in the year for a general consult and imaging. The MRI revealed a clear vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve, with multiple blood vessels compressing the nerve on the right side. Dr. Heir explained this made her a candidate for a microvascular decompression (MVD), a minimally invasive procedure that relieves pressure on the trigeminal nerve caused by a nearby blood vessel. He also recommended a neurosurgeon—Dr. Stephen Johnson of Atlantic Brain and Spine (ABS), a trigeminal neuralgia specialist and expert in MVDs. Penny met with him a few days later. “Dr. Johnson really listened to me,” Penny says. “I never felt pressured to have surgery. He gave me space, and he was there for me when I was ready.” INSTANT RELIEF, ZERO COMPLICATIONS In February 2026, Dr. Johnson performed a right MVD. An audiologist was present during the procedure to ensure none of the nerves that affect hearing were impacted and confirmed actual improvement of hearing in her right ear—an unexpected bonus.
ABS_PartnerContent_SP_MON_0926.indd 29
“Trigeminal neuralgia can cause truly debilitating pain,” Dr. Johnson says. “MVD was the right option for Penny, and I was so happy to be able to give her the relief she deserves so she can go back to enjoying the simple things in life.” After spending one night in the ICU, Penny was cleared to return home. Aside from feeling very tired during recovery, she felt great, with no pain. ENJOYING A PAIN-FREE LIFE Penny gradually returned to the pickleball court and her other favorite activities. Today, she has some lingering numbness on the side of her face and the tip of her tongue, but there is hope those issues will eventually resolve.
What’s most important to Penny is being painfree and back to living life to the fullest. “I wouldn’t think twice about referring anyone to Dr. Johnson,” says Penny. “He even offered to speak to our support group. He is truly wonderful.”

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Royal Treatment Whether you’re craving rich curries, sizzling tandoori specialties or flavorful street food, Monmouth County has an abundance of Indian restaurants serving authentic cuisine. So when my girlfriend and I decide to try someplace new, we’re looking for more than just another good meal—we’re searching for something memorable. That’s exactly what brought us to Baadshah Indian Restaurant in Freehold. The restaurant has been generating major buzz on social media, with videos showcasing dramatic presentations, colorful dishes and lots of tableside flair. We were intrigued. But could a restaurant that’s become Instagram-famous also deliver on flavor? From the moment we walked through the door, we knew we were in good hands. The staff greeted us warmly and made us feel genuinely welcome. Throughout the evening, every member of the team was friendly, attentive and happy to answer questions, offering recommendations and sharing the stories behind several dishes. The décor also was inviting, especially a throne in the back of the dining room—a playful nod to the restaurant’s name, since Baadshah loosely translates as “king.” We began with three appetizers, each offering a completely different experience. The moradabadi dal chaat was unlike anything either of us had tried before. Rather than arriving fully prepared, it was assembled tableside by our server, who explained the history of the dish as it came together. That extra touch transformed it from a simple appetizer into a spectacle. The combination of lentils, herbs, spices and fresh ingredients created bright, layered flavors that were both comforting and refreshing. Watching it prepared in front of us made the first course feel personal, and it quickly became one of the evening’s highlights. Next came the smoky black gold chicken, which certainly lived up to its name. The dish arrived beneath a dramatic cloud of fragrant smoke that immediately caught the attention of nearby tables. Thankfully, the presentation wasn’t a false flag. The chicken itself was wonderfully tender, juicy and infused with deep, smoky flavors that complemented the bold blend of spices. Every bite delivered just the right balance of richness and heat without overwhelming the palate.

The multani paneer twister completed our trio of starters. Each piece of cubed cheese featured a creamy interior contrasted by flavorful spices that lingered pleasantly after each bite. The spice level was perfect for me, although it definitely pushed my girlfriend’s tolerance—a fact she was quick to remedy with a few sips of her drink. My mango lassi may very well be the best I’ve had. It was thick, creamy and bursting with fresh mango flavor, an ideal companion to the spices throughout the meal. My girlfriend chose the smoking Baadshahi Pyala, which arrived with an eye-catching presentation worthy of the restaurant’s growing social-media reputation. As with so many items at Baadshah, the delivery was notable, but the drink itself was equally refreshing and well crafted. Just as we finished our appetizers, our shared entrée arrived: the Queen Nargisi Kofta. Resembling a Scotch egg, it featured minced chicken served in a rich, aromatic sauce with a more-than-noticeable kick. Thankfully, the cool, creamy raita we ordered—a yogurt-based condiment—balanced the heat beautifully, allowing the complex blend of spices to shine. The combined flavors of the spicy meat and the soothing yogurt were deep, layered and satisfying. Although we were comfortably full by the end of dinner, dessert was simply too tempting to pass up. The Bagh-e-Nazrana arrived looking more like an edible work of art than a traditional dessert made with falooda milk and dense, creamy kulfi (Indian ice cream). Colorful, beautifully plated and almost too pretty to eat, it immediately earned a few photos before we picked up our spoons. Thankfully, it wasn’t just Instagram-worthy—it was a satisfying finish that matched the creativity and attention to detail displayed throughout the entire meal. What impressed us most about Baadshah wasn’t simply the must-see eats, although they certainly added to the fun. Behind every cloud of smoke, every tableside preparation and every beautifully plated dish was a kitchen committed to exceptional flavor and careful execution. Pair that with warm hospitality and an eye for detail, and it’s easy to understand the restaurant’s growing popularity. In a county filled with outstanding Indian restaurants, Baadshah distinguishes itself by pairing creativity with substance, making a visit feel special indeed. —Darius Amos

“I captured this picture at sunset as my husband and niece walked ahead of me after a lovely evening in Atlantic Highlands. I’m always drawn to sunsets, but this one carried extra meaning. It was our last dinner together before my husband and I headed West to begin a new chapter in El Paso, Texas, after living in Spring Lake for many years. I love this quiet moment—the warm light, two people I love, and the bittersweet feeling of leaving one home while moving toward another.” —Andrea Plaza, El Paso, Texas
