WELCOME LETTER

PROUD TO HELP PARENTS START THEIR JOURNEY

CHARLESTON SHOE SPRING LAKE Our many cobblestonesto-cocktails shoe styles are geared toward the modern woman who needs to be on her feet and stay fashionable all day long!

HELPING FAMILIES BRING NEW LIVES INTO THE WORLD IS A truly special part of what we do at Monmouth Medical Center. For parents, choosing a hospital for the birth of their baby is an important decision. At Monmouth Medical Center, The Eisenberg Family Center is focused on the individual needs of mothers and babies, as well as on the entire family as a whole. Nearly 5,500 babies are born here annually, more than any other regional facility. And while most of these deliveries follow uncomplicated pregnancies, problems can occur in any pregnancy, which is why we are committed to providing one of the safest obstetrical and gynecologic services in the nation. Monmouth Medical Center has been a Level III High-Risk Maternity Center since the designation was initiated more than 40 years ago, and is one of 15 Regional Perinatal Centers in the state of New Jersey. This year, Monmouth Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the first of its kind in New Jersey and among the first six offered at community hospitals nationally, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In this issue of Monmouth Health & Life, you will meet three families who collectively spent more than 40 weeks with us as their fragile newborns grew and thrived in our NICU. For each family, the NICU became their home away from home, and the doctors and nurses they came to know so well became a part of their extended families. I thank them for sharing their stories. Also in this issue, you will read about our team of dedicated maternal-fetal medicine physicians, who are trained to handle the numerous complications than can arise during pregnancy. These specialists possess the skills and knowledge to handle the most high-risk pregnancies and provide advanced care to protect the health of mother and child. This issue spotlights just a few of the many reasons why Monmouth Medical Center is the trusted choice among expectant parents throughout the region, and we continue to expand and upgrade our facility to match our commitment to quality care and patient safety. As we look ahead to the celebration of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day in the coming months, I thank you for choosing us to begin your journey as parents.

THAT PHRASE, IMMORTALIZED by Dorothy in MGM’s wildly popular blockbuster, The Wizard of Oz, still rings true nearly 80 years after the film’s initial release. In fact, there is probably no notion more widely evoked in our language and lore than “home.” Familiar sayings call it sweet, and of course, it’s the spot our browsers land on when we start our computers. And it’s aptly the place where a runner scores in baseball. Traditionally, our April/May issue extols the virtues of home and hearth, and this year is no different. Creating a warm and inviting environment is important not only for a homeowner, but it’s key when selling a house as well. In “Your Home ‘On Stage’,” Sandy Levin of Freehold-based Beautiful Interiors Design Group discusses the merits of making a good first impression by staging a home for prospective buyers. She talks specifically of the interior design given to a $1.23 million Rumson house (page 38). If you need more inspiration, check out the rooms created by five local designers, who share the way that locales near and far help shape their design choices (page 32). And turn to page 20 to see how a little sparkle can go a long way to upping your style quotient. In “Shine On!” you’ll see our selection of metallics—whether a focal piece or well-placed accent, our picks will surely enliven your space. Of course, this issue is packed with plenty of fun and useful articles. Spring is the start of allergy season, so prep youself with healthful meals. Turn to page 50 for a pair of vegan dishes that will leave you full and feeling great, then flip to page 54 for the 411 on this month’s power food selection, rainbow chard. And while our drink of the month, juicy penicillin, might not cure your cough, it’ll taste great when you sip it this season (page 56). We hope you enjoy these and all the other stories in this issue. We hope they inspire you on your next project and help you have the best spring ever!

Celebrating 30 years in business!

You can be fitter, faster, stronger, and more independent. We will work our hardest to help you achieve your goals in a healthy way—You, only better!

Women In Transition W

ELCOME to the latest edition of fiscal fitness! It’s a snowy day in March as we celebrate Women’s History Month. Henrietta Green is not a household name, yet she was thought to be the richest woman in America in the late 1800s. She invested her $6 million inheritance into stocks and bonds, eventually turning it into $100 million by the time she passed. Nicknamed the “Witch of Wall Street”, she dressed in black most of the time and was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s greatest miser. What is most admirable is her interest in finance at a very young age. “Hetty” was often quoted as saying she knew “as much about finance as any man.” Fast forward to 2018—how much do you know about your finances and investing? The sad truth is many women have opted to let the “other half” worry about the family’s finances and are often in the dark when the unexpected happens. Financial transitions, such as divorce or death of a spouse, can have serious long-term consequences, especially for the woman “in the dark”. Why leave such things to chance? As transition experts, we help our clients move forward financially, turning challenges into opportunities. As women, we need a Plan B, in case the unexpected happens.

ESTABLISH YOUR OWN BANK ACCOUNT I have met with too many divorcing women who did not have access to the checking account. Once the emotions of divorce start to escalate, it’s often impossible to feel in control when someone else controls the purse strings. What if your husband passed away and the account was registered in his name only? Not uncommon, particularly if done for estate planning purposes. Try not to leave yourself in a vulnerable position and have access to cash for emergencies.

UNDERSTAND YOUR TAX RETURN If I hear one more woman say to me “I just sign the return” I think I will scream. I am not suggesting you hire a forensic accountant, but please, start to familiarize yourself with the tax returns or at least meet with your accountant, along with your spouse, at tax time. Believe me, I have heard just about everything. I have met widows who owed taxes, penalties and interest just because they didn’t know estimated tax payments were not being mailed to the IRS. Rather than grieving, they were dealing with the IRS. A little education can go a long way. CONTRIBUTE TO A SPOUSAL IRA If you are 50 or older, married, and not working, you are eligible to contribute up to $6,500 to either a traditional or Roth IRA. The recent tax law changes have made Roth IRAs even more appealing. Did you know that if your child has earned income, she or he is eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA? (speak to your tax advisor). If you are experiencing a significant financial CFP ® transition, now is the time to speak to a qualified and experienced CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional who can guide you in the right direction. Together we can make it happen.

DEBRA FOURNIER, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and Certified Divorce Financial Analyst™, has been providing comprehensive wealth management and investment advisory services to families and independent women for over twenty years. Recognized as an experienced and knowledgeable professional in the areas of divorce financial planning and transitional planning, her guidance is often sought when there are complicated financial issues, significant assets or an imbalance in financial knowledge between divorcing couples. She has been quoted in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine and AOL Daily Finance, appeared numerous times on Good Day New York and has been featured in the Asbury Park Press section Getting Ahead. For more information about our Fiscal Fitness Workshops, please call 732-800-8400 or email us directly at debra.fournier@lpl.com Topics include: Investment & Retirement Basics, Retirement Income Planning, Understanding Social Security and Advanced Estate Planning.

THAT’S AMORE You can never have too many authentic Italian restaurants, which is why Monmouth County is welcoming Clarizios in Freehold with open arms. The new eatery offers classics like eggplant parmigiana and manicotti, and pasta dishes such as linguine with clams and rigatoni bolognese that are sure to hit the spot. Start your meal off right with an appetizer of fried calamari or shrimp cocktail, and a light salad or mozzarella caprese to follow. BRIGHT FUTURE Celebrity chef David Burke, who has appeared on Iron Chef America and Top Chef Masters, is bringing his talent to New Jersey with the opening of the Drifthouse Restaurant in Sea Bright. The dinner spot will take the place of Ama Ristorante at the Driftwood Cabana Club, with Robert Burke, David’s brother, heading the kitchen as executive chef. David Burke owns two other popular restaurants: Tavern62 in Manhattan and BLT Prime in Washington, D.C. When discussing his newest venture, David has said, “It’s my goal to bring a true culinary experience to the Drifthouse Restaurant.” The eatery offers daily food and drink specials, and space for hosting private events. NATIONAL TAFFY DAY May 23 is National Taffy Day—and where better to celebrate than the Jersey Shore?! After all, salt-water taffy was created in Atlantic City in 1883, supposedly after candy maker David Bradley’s store was flooded by seawater during a major storm. KOREAN CUISINE Bulbap Grill, one of Marlboro’s newest restaurants, is serving up traditional Korean fare with some crazy cool twists. The joint already has a popular New York location in Brooklyn—so it’s safe to say they know what they’re doing. During your visit, start with one of the grill’s appetizers, like Bul Dak Fondu (spicy chicken with a medley of melted cheese) or Beef Mandoo (housemade fried beef dumplings). The grill offers plenty of vegetarian options as well. Veggie lovers can order the Sunny Avo, a rice bowl topped with avocado, fried eggs, shiitake mushrooms, carrots and a sprinkle of dried seaweed. Maybe the bulgogi salad with jalapeños and a kiwi dressing is more to your liking. But the sweetest part will be trying Bulbap Grill’s signature “Bingsoo,” or shaved ice. The icy creations are almost too beautiful to eat, with colorful and tasty toppings like Fruity Pebbles, fresh fruit and pieces of wafer cone.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY What’s in a name? For Andrew Evilsizor, it’s the source of his barbershop’s edgy moniker. As children, Andrew and his three brothers were dubbed “evil” due to their unique last name, and the nickname stuck into adulthood. When added to the popular haircutting technique “fade,” it creates the name of Evilsizor’s business venture, “Evil Fades.” Evilsizor has owned and operated his Millstone location since 2011, and recently decided to bring the “true gentlemen’s club” experience to Red Bank. The shop offers simple cuts and facial hair shape-ups, but it’s known for freestyle designs done with a straight razor. Patrons can request anything from logos to sports team insignias, which Evilsizor frequently features on his Instagram. Evil Fades offers father-son haircut specials and discounts to law-enforcement officials on Wednesdays—undoubtedly the act of a “true gentleman.” 30 MONMOUTH ST., RED BANK, 732.852.2750, EVILFADES.COM MONMOUTH HE ALTH & LIFE

ALTERNATIVE CANCER THERAPY RISK People who choose alternative treatments for commonly curable cancers may double their risk of death, according to a recent study. Researchers defined an alternative treatment as one administered by a non-medical person. Traditional treatments included chemo, radiation and surgery. The reason cited for the extra risk is that the cancer may be allowed to spread. —Journal of the National Cancer Institute

A study of 77,000 people revealed that high intakes of vitamins B6 and B12 over a 10-year period were associated with a higher risk of lung cancer in men. On the other hand, there was no such link between these vitamins and lung cancer in women.

LITTLE STEPS

IN 1968, MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER (MMC) became the first hospital in New Jersey and the first community hospital in the country to establish a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Today, it boasts the region’s largest state-designated, level III NICU with one of the highest survival rates in the country. Staff members include board-certified neonatologists, specially trained nurse practitioners and neonatal nurses, therapists, social workers and a broad-range of subspecialists, including pediatric surgeons and radiologists. The Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation Regional Newborn Center (RNC) provides specialized care for more than 500 babies annually—even those weighing less than a pound and born at just 23 weeks gestation. But in the RNC, the focus is on parents as well as babies. “Parents are often here with their babies for extended periods—four to eight weeks or more,” says Susan Hudome, M.D., chief of neonatology and medical director of the Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation Regional Newborn Center, “so family comfort is a top priority.” It is a priority that is evident in conversations with parents whose babies spent significant time in the NICU. A common reflection for these families is that what was a very difficult time in their lives became a positive experience due to the unit’s extraordinary caregivers.

JOCELYN AND STEVE PASSARELLO

For Toms River residents Jocelyn and Steve Passarello, MMC’s NICU would be their home away from home for 111 days following the birth of their son, Lucas. Born Oct. 5, 2013, at 26 weeks gestation and weighing 2 pounds, 2 ounces, Lucas’ care was primarily related to respiratory issues—a common complication in very small babies. “Lucas’ biggest issue was with his airway, and he still has issues with his breathing related to that,” says Jocelyn, who notes that he also has something known as soft voice due to scar tissues on his vocal cords. And while he wears glasses to correct farsightedness and currently undergoes occupational and physical therapy to improve his fine motor skills, Lucas today is a typical, intelligent, inquisitive 4-year-old. “The NICU staff was very attentive to Lucas, and they had our complete trust,” Jocelyn says. “We had such a great experience during the 16 weeks we spent at Monmouth. We are involved each year in the Big Steps for Little Feet fund-raising walk (see related item on page 34), and have kept in touch with many of the nurses, some of whom have babysat for Lucas.” Jocelyn, a social worker with a local community YMCA, and her husband, Steve, a retail manager for a Best Buy store in Princeton, are also parents to Mack, 1, who was born full term at 8 pounds, 8 ounces. “After Lucas was born, I learned that I had a uterine septum, which is a congenital defect in the wall of my uterus that didn’t allow enough room for him to fully grow, and I had surgery to correct it,” she says.

CHRISTINA AND JOHN RUSSOTTO

Morganville residents Christina and John Russottos’ NICU journey began the same date as the Passarellos’, when their twin sons Johnny and Michael were born Oct. 5, 2013, at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound, 14 ounces, and 1 pound, 12 ounces, respectively. While Christina’s pregnancy had progressed normally, she said that on a routine well visit on Oct. 4, her doctor discovered that she was in labor, and she was admitted to MMC, where she underwent an emergency C-section the next day. While Johnny’s stay in the NICU lasted nearly four months, his twin, Michael, was transferred at 2 months to an out-of-state hospital for eye surgery from which he never awoke. In the family’s home, framed photos of the tiny preemies adorn the Russottos’ family room wall, and Johnny, a tall, smart and active John and Christina preschooler, proudly points to pictures of his Russotto with son brother. Additionally, Christina, a teacher, and Johnny and daughter Giovanna her husband, John Sr., who works in Information Technology, have a 2-year-old daughter, Giovanna, who was born at full term. BERNADETTE AND MICHAEL MONCADA “I consider Monmouth Medical Center my home, and the NICU For Old Bridge residents Bernadette and Michael Moncada, the staff to be a part of my family,” she says, noting that Johnny underday their daughter Alexandra was born—last summer on July 31 went care typical of a tiny preemie, primarily oxygen and caffeine at 31 weeks gestation weighing 3 pounds, 6 ounces—was the treatments for his developing lungs. “We spent 107 days—12 to scariest moment of their lives. 14 hours a day—there, and we really saw firsthand that the care is “My husband and I did not know what to expect on the journey second to none. She recalls how challenging it was to go home without her baby, but said they would visit the NICU every day and read and sing to her. “The NICU staff was phenomenal, and were able to make such a scary and unknown experience so comforting,” she says. “They give so much of themselves each and every day to take excellent care of every baby on the unit; they really go above and beyond to help each family cope with the struggles that can come with having a NICU baby.” Bernadette, a school counselor at Perth Amboy High School, and her husband, Michael, a staff member with the Union County Department of Public Works, recall how the nurses would nurture Alexandra when they couldn’t be there. “They were like our angels watching over her for us,” she says. “My husband and I will be forever grateful to them; I believe that our daughter thrived there because of each and every nurse and doctor that took care of her.” MONMOUTH HE ALTH & LIFE

SEEING THROUGH

ANGEL EYES As Monmouth Medical Center’s NICU marks its 50th anniversary in 2018, the Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation Regional Newborn Center has been gifted with the latest interactive technology that allows parents and families to see and interact with their babies in the neonatal intensive care unit via live video streaming and direct, one-way audio. The innovative Angel Eyes system, funded by a generous donation from the Scire Family Foundation, uses a camera placed at the baby’s bedside so that parents and other family members who can’t be at the NICU can view the baby 24 hours a day by logging into a secure account from their laptop, tablet or smartphone. This system helps promote bonding between parents and their premature babies, who sometimes have to stay in the hospital for weeks or months. The far-reaching ability of the system allows for babies to hear the voices of family members worldwide. For the Sheehan family, who welcomed triplet girls on March 25—six weeks early—Angel Eyes gives parents Richelle and Thomas peace of mind at times when they are unable to be by the babies’ sides. The system also allows family in New York and Georgia to be a part of the girls’ journeys. “We cannot express how much Angel Eyes means to our family. It allows us to see the triplets, even when we cannot be there,” Richelle says. “Being parents of three babies in the NICU is an emotional and physical challenge. The cameras have helped make the experience easier for our entire family.”

Monmouth Medical Center’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, who are members of Barnabas Health Medical Group, include, from left: David Gonzalez, M.D.; Nisha Malik, M.D.; Carl A. Nath, M.D.; and David M. Wallace, M.D.

SPECIAL DELIVERY FOR WOMEN WITH HIGHRISK PREGNANCIES, MMC’S MATERNAL-FETAL MEDICINE SPECIALISTS DELIVER TOP-NOTCH CARE. EACH YEAR, MORE WOMEN CHOOSE to deliver their baby at Monmouth Medical Center than any other hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties. And while most of the nearly 5,500 annual deliveries at Monmouth follow uncomplicated pregnancies, problems can occur in any pregnancy, and the hospital’s team of maternal-fetal medicine physicians are trained to handle the numerous complications that can arise during gestation.

The members of the Division of MaternalFetal Medicine at Monmouth Medical Center are experts in the treatment of women who anticipate or are experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. High-risk pregnancies can be associated with women having multiple births, those with diabetes, high blood pressure, a history of blood disorders or pre-term labor, as well as other pregnancy complications. “High-risk pregnancies can be managed with special testing and procedures to promote the health of both the unborn baby and the mother,” says David Gonzalez, M.D., chief of maternal-fetal medicine at Monmouth. “Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine team is dedicated to providing expectant mothers and their babies with the most advanced, complete and professional care before

delivery, as well as the sensitivity and caring our patients deserve.” The busy practice draws patients from a four-county area that includes Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex and Mercer counties. Each week, the physicians handle 250 patient visits at their Long Branch office in addition to 135 each at their Lakewood location and at the Antenatal Testing Center at Monmouth Medical Center. Care of the very high-risk patient often needs to begin prior to pregnancy and may continue past delivery into the post-partum period. Testing during pregnancy can include everything from advanced diagnostics including ultrasound, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling and direct fetal assessment. Also offered is the latest advances in testing, noninvasive prenatal MONMOUTH HE ALTH & LIFE

IN GOOD HEALTH testing (NIPT), a blood test used to screen for Down syndrome and a few other chromosomal conditions that is performed as early as the 10th week of pregnancy. Counseling and education also form an integral part of the care of the high-risk patient. Many obstetricians-gynecologists are qualified by training and experience to manage complicated pregnancies. MaternalFetal Medicine specialists are obstetricians with advanced training in the subspecialty of caring for high-risk patients and are boardcertified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Maternal-Fetal Medicine. “We work with the referring obstetricians to optimize the care of the patients by providing consultations, co-management or direct care for complicated patients both before and during pregnancy,” Dr. Gonzalez says. The most common reason for a patient to be referred to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist is to determine if the fetus appears to be developing normally. Through the use of tools such as ultrasound, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, the maternal-fetal medicine team can help expectant parents know if their baby appears to be healthy. “Many women have pre-existing medical conditions, such as diabetes, sickle cell, anemia, hypertension or lupus that may worsen because of pregnancy and threaten the health of mother and baby,” Dr. Gonzalez says. “The Maternal-Fetal team evaluates

and treats these women with specialized care, such as fetal echocardiograms, antepartum fetal surveillance, postpartum care and a diabetic program that includes everything from preconceptional counseling to home glucose monitoring.” Some women develop complications unique to pregnancy, such as preterm labor, premature ruptured membranes, preeclampsia or complications due to multiple pregnancies, and require assistance. Women also are referred to Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists for evaluation of prior pregnancy losses. Women with multiple first-trimester losses or fetal loss of any kind in the second and third trimester may benefit from a detailed evaluation to help determine the potential cause of these losses. Many losses may be due to a correctable condition that can be treated. Additionally, Monmouth Medical Center has a state-of-the-art level III neonatal intensive care nursery (see related story, page 30). When problems develop, the physicians work closely with other subspecialists at Monmouth Medical Center, including the neonatologists, the pediatric surgeon and the pediatric cardiologist, to ensure that each baby receives the best care possible. The multidisciplinary team provides families with the most empathetic, knowledgeable and up-to-date care. Prenatal evaluation services are available at the Maternal-Fetal Medicine team locations on South Bath Avenue in Long Branch

THE ROLE OF GENETIC COUNSELING

As an expectant mother, your physician may refer you to a genetic counselor for a host of reasons including: n Advanced maternal age (35 or

older at due date). n Following an abnormal serum

screen, to evaluate the risk of a chromosome abnormality or spina bifida. n Family history of a genetic condition or birth defect. n E xposure to certain forms of medications, infections, radiation or chemical agents. n Having an ethnic background with an increased risk for a genetically inherited disease, such as cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease and sickle cell anemia. and at the Women’s and Children’s Specialty Center in Lakewood. Each location offers easy access and convenient on-site parking. Additionally, the Antenatal Testing Center at Monmouth Medical Center provides parents-to-be-with similar services within the confines of the hospital.

THE TRUE VAGABOND HAS NO HOME BASE—NOTHING TO REDECORATE, nothing to vacuum. But who ever said the rest of us can’t catch the vagabond spirit, tapping the world’s visual variety for the homes we cherish? For this issue, Escapes takes a break from its usual wanderings for an armchair tour, courtesy of five local interior designers. We asked them to spill the beans about travel destinations that have sparked their creativity. If your next trip idea doesn’t spring to mind here, maybe a design notion will.

Greater Kruger, South Africa: “It’s hard to capture the energy of South Africa in just a few words, but you recognize and feel it immediately, especially in the artistic movements and design spaces. South Africans spend a lot of time outside and often embrace an organic lifestyle, which usually translates into their interiors. Seagrass baskets, sisal rugs, woven rattan and raw woods bring a sense of that nature-oriented mindset indoors. It can even be as simple as a nature-inspired color palette or soft organic shapes reminiscent of naturally occurring patterns and landscapes. After all, it’s all about how a place and space can transform the way that you feel.” —Sarah Dooley, Leedy Interiors, Tinton Falls

“When tasked with redesigning a beachfront triplex located at the Jersey Shore, my client and I were both immediately drawn to French influence. The inspiration for the coffee table came from my client’s vacation in France. Luckily, the French manufacturer has a showroom in NYC. For the custom stereo cabinet and shelving unit, I selected fabrics and trims reminiscent of Paris streets but also to complement the tropical vibe, in essence creating a casual entertainment area with rattan, wicker and bleached fabrics filled with whimsical touches and color.” —Ria Gulian, Designs By Ria, Oceanport

Mantoloking, New Jersey: “For me, inspiration is everywhere because we live by the beach. A lot of the color palettes are really inspired by our inherent surroundings of where we live—the grays, blues, greens of the ocean and the sky, particularly in the winter. There’s now a huge trend toward gray-tone neutrals. If you look at our beaches, we have this neutral color palette that’s so popular in the grays of the stone and the white foam of the ocean.” Meghan Dobish, Lawrence Mayer Interior Design, Brielle

Meghan Dobish, Lawrence Mayer Interior Design, Brielle, often gets her color palette from the beach around her, as reflected in the living room pictured above.

West Coast, California: “I have traveled extensively through California, from San Diego to San Francisco, not only loving the climate, but also the coastal homes. I am inspired by the use of natural materials on the West Coast, like wood, bamboo, sea grass and stones. As in most areas that are typically warm throughout the year, they tend to keep a cooler and light color palette. Using a lot of neutrals keeps the design more relaxed and does not fight with all the different textures.” —Nicole Rice, Coastal Décor and Interior Design, Fair Haven

E ‘ON STAGE’

The nautical accessories, pictured here in the great room, tie in nicely with this Rumson home’s location along Navesink River. Yet they don’t detract from the home itself, which is key.

WHEN YOU ARE SELLING YOUR HOME, THERE’S ONLY ONE chance to make a good first impression. That’s why staging, when done right, is of such value. Staging goes well beyond removing clutter. It’s more than the fresh coat of paint that spruces up a tired façade. And it certainly should not be a substitute for making repairs that otherwise would likely scare off buyers, such as a leaky ceiling. With proper staging, says Sandy Levin, who founded the Freehold-based Beautiful Interiors Design Group in 2001, “We’re creating a dream. We’re fashioning a warm and inviting environment where people can envision themselves living.” When a newly constructed but vacant home in exclusive Rumson didn’t hook a buyer after a few months on the market starting

40

in November 2017, Levin was called in to create a success story. Just four days after staging, victory—the home had an accepted offer, she says. From her experience as an interior designer and a home-staging expert, Levin knew that buyers were unlikely to bond with a vacant home. That’s because most people—90 percent, she says—cannot look past the emptiness effectively to visualize a house as their home sweet home. These days, when most buyers hit the Internet before the pavement in their real-estate search, the negative effects of a vacant home have become even more disastrous. “If a home is vacant online, it looks like a warehouse, which is not appealing,” says Levin. To conquer emptiness in the Rumson home, Levin brought in

Below: Right down to the painting of a local vista on the wall, the dining room is geared to the typical Rumson buyer and their tastes. At left: The airy, white kitchen with its big center island beckons buyers to make themselves part of the picture with attention to every detail, including the place settings.

furniture and accessories, all of which she rents out through her company. But if your first inclination in staging your home is to choose whatever catches your eye in a catalogue, you could be wasting your cash. Before staging a home, Levin studies demographics to determine a home’s typical buyer. With the Rumson home, priced at almost $1.23 million, Levin wanted furnishings and décor that reflected the lifestyle this beachy-chic community offers buyers. Formerly a resort town for elite New Yorkers, Rumson now lends itself to year-round living—people like the breezy ferry commute to work from Highlands and the time it allows for boating and other outdoor fun when they get home. The nautical theme for this farmhouse-style home was a perfect match. A boat and starfish on the coffee table in the great room reflect the lifestyle that draws buyers to Rumson. Over the fireplace mantel, a scenic Rumson vista was painted by Guy T. Hembling, the owner of the home construction firm Charles B. Hembling & Son, located in Shrewsbury, which has been in business for nearly a century and was a contractor on this project. What these furnishings did not do is detract from the house itself. Making sure that furniture, accessories and wall décor do not steal the show is one of the top pointers Levin gives those endeavoring to stage their homes for sale.

By keeping the windows in this bedroom free of curtains and blinds, the stager maximizes natural light and views, increasing buying potential.

OTHER STAGING TIPS ARE: n Nothing personal: Take down collections, family

photos and other décor that reflect your personality and start to let go. “You want to disassociate from your home,” says Sandy Levin, founder of Freehold-based Beautiful Interiors Design Group. “When you put it on the market, it’s a product.” The goal is for buyers to see themselves there—not you, which means the more neutral, the better. n Let the light shine: Take down the blinds and curtains (unless needed for privacy) and maximize the beauty of the windows, their architectural features such as molding, and the sunshine they deliver. “You’re selling the architectural interest in the windows and the light coming through,” Levin says. n Out of sight: Kitchen counters in the Rumson house are kept spacious with few decorations, but when folks are still living in their house, they need to put things like coffee makers away. Levin suggests having a checklist of items that can quickly be removed for an open house. To make it easy, stash these things in a basket and put the whole thing out of sight. “It’s almost supposed to be like no one’s living there,” she said. “In the dream we’re creating, people don’t want to see knives, a blender, a coffee maker and such.” nGo neutral: Another pointer for a dreamy aesthetic is painting with warm, neutral colors such as grays and taupe, which are popular right now. Levin recommends staying away from white—a stark, cold hue. n Mind those details: The Rumson kitchen’s clutter-free center island has four inviting place settings that avoid distracting formality.

ASIAN STIR FRY Yields: 3 or 4 servings INGREDIENTS n 12 oz. rice noodles n 4 heads of bok choy, white stems separated from the greens n 2 garlic cloves, chopped n ½ red chile, sliced or chopped n 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped n 4 Tbs. tamari or soy sauce n Sweet & Salty Cashews, chopped (see recipe below) SWEET & SALTY CASHEWS n 1 Tbs. maple syrup n 1 Tbs. nama shoyu or tamari n 1 tsp. garlic powder n 1 tsp. smoked paprika (optional) n 1½ cups raw cashews

DIRECTIONS Cook the noodles in boiling water following the package instructions. When done, drain, then rinse with cold water and let sit. Chop the white stems of the bok choy and cook them in a wok over high heat with a splash of water, stirring constantly. After 3 to 4 minutes, add the garlic, chile and ginger and keep stirring. After a minute, add the noodles, bok choy greens and a splash of water if needed. Mix well until the noodles are warm (about two minutes), then add the tamari or soy sauce. Toss well. Serve scattered with the chopped cashews. You can also drizzle with some toasted sesame oil, if you’d like. TO MAKE THE CASHEWS Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix the maple syrup, nama shoyu or tamari with the garlic powder and smoked paprika, if using. Place the cashews in a large bowl, pour over the sauce and mix well until thoroughly coated. Transfer the cashews (leave the excess seasoning in the bowl) to the lined baking sheet, spread out evenly and roast in the oven for 3 minutes. Remove the sheet, stir the nuts then return them to the oven and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. Keep an eye on them: They should turn light golden but you don’t want to burn them. Remove the nuts from the oven and allow to cool so they become crisp, then serve.

POWER FOOD

Taste the Rainbow AND NO, WE’RE NOT TALKING CANDY. WITH ITS VIBRANT MIX OF COLORS AND HEFTY DOSE OF NUTRIENTS, RAINBOW CHARD WILL BRIGHTEN YOUR PLATE AND YOUR HEALTH.

FOR YEARS, HEALTH EXPERTS HAVE recommended a diet filled with differentcolored foods to encourage the intake of a wide range of vitamins and minerals. But what if you could dine on shades of red, white, pink, orange, purple and gold (bright and pastel variations included) courtesy of just one vegetable? You can. Rainbow chard—featuring the intense flavor of Swiss chard, the mildly nutty flavor of golden chard, the sweetness of red chard and more— contains a bevy of betalain pigments that provide its eye-catching array of colors. And while it may not be on as many menus as the better-known Swiss chard, it’s certainly worthy of some prime real estate on your dinner plate. POWER UP One cup of cooked rainbow chard contains just 35 calories, and man, does it pack a nutritional punch: Along with the minerals manganese and zinc, the leafy vegetable contains high levels of vitamins A, C, K and E. Even better, those betalains have been shown to help with the body’s detoxification process and combat inflammation. They also contain carotenoids and flavonoids that help prevent LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) from being deposited in the arteries. BUY/STORE/SERVE When shopping for rainbow chard, avoid bunches that have wilting leaves or brown stalks—seek out ones that have brightly colored leaves and fresh-cut stems. The veggie can be stored in the fridge for a day or two, loosely wrapped in plastic, but if you want to keep it for longer, separate the leaves and stems, then store the stems loosely wrapped in plastic. The leaves, meanwhile, should be rolled up in paper towels and then put in a plastic bag—they’ll stay fresh for about a week. When preparing the veggie, be sure to rinse it thoroughly, or you’ll risk tasting a bit of grit. Sauteeing or stir-frying is best—for the

54

most even cooking, start heating the stems before adding the leaves. One of the most popular chard dishes is blissfully simple and quick: Heat some olive oil in a large pan, then saute two cloves of garlic until they’re fragrant. Add the chard, stir it to coat, then cover and cook for eight minutes. Just keep one thing in mind: Those healthy betalains aren’t heatstable, so long cooking times can decrease their presence (and, hence, their benefits). DID YOU KNOW? Chard is used as a substitute for spinach; it goes well with vegetables like tomatoes, artichokes, beets and peppers, grains like rice and barley, meats such as bacon and chicken, and cheeses like parmesan and pecorino.

ERIC YEGELWEL Creative, fresh, bold and inspiring are just a few words I would use to describe my cuisine. Almost 2 years ago I had an exciting opportunity to work for Biagio at Mossutos Market. Everything in the market is hand crafted from pasta to mozzarella. My knowledge and experience in the culinary industry has given me the ability to bring my ideas to life through daily specials using the freshest seasonal ingredients.
