Welcome back to ACCENT!

The journey continues as our family celebrates 121 years as New England’s favorite jeweler and we continue to help you celebrate life’s special occasions. “Every Box has a Story ™,” a trademark of our family business, never seems to get old, and each and every week one of our associates tells us a teary, innovative or heartwarming story of a gift that will become an iconic memory for a family or individuals. It’s truly what keeps us engaged. Our talented staff understands the value of our customer and vendor relationships and provides exceptional service.

This spring we are excited to share some of the Lux Bond & Green collections and stories with you in the hope that a trip to one of our stores to select a gift or restore a family heirloom will help you create that next memory. There is always a lot happening in our stores and we wish we could include all the pictures and stories you share with us throughout the year. We congratulate newly engaged couples we have worked with as well as the brides and grooms who are starting their next life chapters. Again, in this issue, we also celebrate staff members who are celebrating 20, 25, 30 and 35 years with our family.

As you read the articles and stories in the magazine, you will see trends from around the world and close to home. We are showcasing some of our favorite items and new collections that continue to grow in popularity. Our colored gemstones, from natural colored diamonds to tanzanites, aquamarines, opals and garnets continue to be widely admired throughout our stores. Even crystal champagne glasses with colored accents have again become a beautiful companion to their clear counterparts.

For the last several years, you have read about the new world of retail and technology transforming what we do and how we do it. It’s all true and our team continues to invest in areas that improve your shopping experience. We pride ourselves on our exceptional customer service and talented team of professionals who manage our website, train our staff, restore your jewelry and watches and create our social media posts. We are especially proud of our ability to create custom items with CAD (or computer aided design) capabilities and the always important communications through text and email to ensure your complete satisfaction. It’s 2019 and it’s what you expect and what we expect as well. The Amazons of the world haven’t taken away our business, but they have brought many best practices to the table as we continue to exceed your expectations and earn your trust and loyalty in the new age of shopping. Come visit LBGreen.com and our stores, and as always, we appreciate your referrals and reviews in today’s competitive world.

Meet our flagship, now with the heart of an automatic and a refined design that was years in the making. It’s an evolutionary moment for the timepiece, featuring recognizable but refreshed details: microtracking, a richly-printed dial and an iconic caseback with a window into the inner workings of its workhorse movement, the Sellita SW200-1. This heirloom-worthy timepiece is the epitome of the brand’s commitment to quality craftsmanship that refuses to be ignored.

ART

Considered a trailblazer who ushered in a movement of storytelling in the genre of fashion photography, Norman Parkinson worked outside the box. He took female models away from the static poses and outside well-controlled studios common in pre-war photography and into the real world. His shoots often took place in exotic, glamorous locations where his subjects interacted with the environment. In a career that spanned from 1931 until his death in 1990—while shooting on location in Singapore—Parkinson’s work reflected our evolving society.

Model Pilar Crespi reclines on a beach in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. Photographer Norman Parkinson shot the image for Town & Country magazine in 1980.

In 1956, Parkinson traveled across India on a photo shoot for British Vogue. Upon seeing the exotic photos, notable fashion editor Diana Vreeland remarked, “How clever of you, Mr. Parkinson, to know that pink is the navy blue of India.”

GIFT GUIDE

ON HER SPECIAL HOLIDAY, GIVE HER A SPARKLING PIECE FROM ONE OF THESE STELLAR DESIGNERS. Flowers for Mother’s Day? Sure, their fragrant, ephemeral beauty makes them a popular choice. And chocolates are wonderful too—even if they require her to suspend her diet just for the day. But this year the holiday could be your chance to make a gesture as enduring as your love—for your kids’ mom, your own or another special mother in your life. When you’re ready, the following designers can help turn your giving impulse into an enchanting keepsake.

No woman is ever going to turn down a piece of jewelry on Mother’s Day, that’s just a fact. But gift-givers need to keep in mind the wearer’s personal style before making a purchase. Is her taste in jewelry classic or trendy? Does she prefer dainty or oversized? That’s why David Yurman is the perfect choice. The brand’s ever-expanding line of masterpieces can appeal to every woman’s preference and has staying power. After all, Yurman jewels—created by David Yurman, his wife, Sybil, and now son, Evan—have been adorning women’s wrists, necks, fingers and earlobes for almost 40 years. David Yurman jewelry is made with gold, silver or mixed metals; gemstones, diamonds or pearls. The brand offers pinky rings for risk-taker moms, statement sparklers for fans of the classics, hoop earrings that’ll become a special-occasion staple and simple studs for everyday wear. But no matter what item(s) you choose for Mom, each unique piece has the Yurman signature cable design she’ll instantly recognize and adore. The motif is used in innovative and beautiful ways, such as on a cuff, surrounding a pendant or on the inside of a ring where only the wearer can see it. Elegant and timeless, David Yurman is the Mother’s Day present the busy mom in your life deserves. From top left: Cable Collectibles Sculpted Heart Necklace with diamonds in 18K gold, Cable Collectibles I Love You Pendant with 14K gold, Cable Collectibles Initial Necklace with diamonds, Amulets Heart Pendant with diamonds in 18K gold, The Crossover Collection Cuff bracelet with diamonds, Pearl Cluster rings with diamonds.

GIFT GUIDE

ROBERTO COIN Why not give Mom a piece of jewelry from the City of Gold itself? Roberto Coin’s eponymous brand was born in 1977 in Vicenza, Italy’s capital of gold. Soon after its official inception in 1996, Roberto Coin became world-renowned and celebrity-adored, and it’s easy to see why—each piece is unique and handcrafted in 18K gold, some with gems and some without. Every piece in Roberto Coin’s collections also features his signature: a tiny ruby hidden inside that is the designer’s gift to his customers. Ruby is a “…romantic way to wish the best to all the people wearing my pieces,” Coin has said. The ruby also represents health, happiness and long life, and no mom can say no to all that.

What better way to show Mom love than through wearable art? Italian designer Ippolita Rostagno creates her jewelry with art and sculpture in mind, and it shows in each and every handmade piece. Ippolita, who studied sculpture and dance in Florence, uses precious metals like gold, sterling silver and rose gold and expertly cut, hand-faceted gemstones to create one-of-a-kind pieces, like the stackable bangles and long, layered necklaces for which she is known. PORSCHE ELECTRIFIES THE GREEN VEHICLE MARKET WITH ITS FIRST ELECTRIC SPORTS SEDAN. By Darius Amos

Careful what you wish for—right, Elon Musk? The Tesla chief took the auto world by storm when he rolled out his line of luxury electric cars, but little did he know his call for the globe’s other leading automakers to manufacture competitive “green” vehicles would be met head-on by Porsche. The German company, with a nearly 90-year history of producing high-end sports cars, has more than stepped up to Musk’s challenge. It is launching a new high-performance sports sedan, the Taycan (pronounced TIE-con), that will stand toe-to-toe with Tesla’s iconic Model S. The Taycan—a Eurasian word that translates loosely to “lively young horse”—is Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle. With a starting price in the $90,000-to-$100,000 range, it aims to become the leader in a market that’s been ruled by Tesla. So what makes this colt run? For starters, it boasts two electric motors that generate a whopping 600 horsepower, which Porsche says muscles 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. Not bad considering Porsche’s legendary 911 Turbo S does that sprint in roughly 2.5 seconds. Early track results show that the

Taycan has an electric range of about 310 miles. The car’s power source is an 800-volt supercharger battery—plug in the car for just 15 minutes and it will have enough juice to travel 248 miles, or New York to Boston, without stopping. The Porsche power on the Taycan is tamed by all-wheel drive traction, though a rear-wheel drive version is an anticipated option for the future. Inside the cabin, you’ll find all the luxurious amenities typically associated with the Porsche name. The driver’s position resembles a 911, with plenty of gadgets and gizmos within reach. Two touchscreens (one a 10.1-inch display) provide controls for everything from the premium infotainment system to seat adjustments. If you’re hauling family, friends or co-workers, they’ll ride in comfort—there’s ample room for them plus space for luggage in the front and back. An old adage suggests that sometimes less is more. Without an engine, the Taycan offers fewer mechanical components for a driver to interact (play) with. No worries. Welcome to the new generation of electric sports cars.

48

LUX BOND & GREEN

The Porsche Taycan will be the luxury sports car manufacturer’s first electric car when it hits the U.S. later this year. Engineers say the sports sedan can travel about 310 miles on a fully charged battery—a range that eclipses the industry leader, Tesla’s iconic Model S.

THANKS TO ITS UNMATCHED RELIABILITY, THE OYSTER PERPETUAL COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA HAS A LONG TRACK RECORD IN MOTOR SPORTS. Rolex has linked its fame with the word “Daytona” over the years, and that’s no accident. The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is perhaps the Swiss brand’s most iconic watch, adored and admired by celebrities and less-known collectors alike. The timepiece was created with racing and speed in mind, and it has come to be regarded as one of the world’s most reliable watches due to its roots with speed racing in Daytona Beach, Florida. How? In 1935, after breaking a speed record of 276 miles per hour in his car Bluebird V at Daytona Beach, Sir Malcolm Campbell notified Rolex that the watch he wore during that race was still running. The fact that this timepiece withstood speeds and temperatures not typically experienced by owners was a testament to its craftsmanship. From there, Rolex’s relationship with racing grew steadily and, in 1963, the company launched a new-generation chronograph, the Cosmograph, dedicated to race-car drivers. This watch has evolved over the years to become a legend, a cherished trophy for this race, a tribute to the winning driver’s skill and a must-have for a collector’s vault, eventually becoming known by the prestigious name Daytona. In 1992, Rolex formalized their long-standing association with

Daytona and Daytona International Speedway by becoming the official timepiece and title sponsor of the epic 24-hour endurance race held annually in January. In 2001, the brand became the official partner and the official timepiece of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Rolex is also the timekeeper for Formula 1 Racing and will start its sixth season with F1 when its Grand Prix season begins in March. Meanwhile, three-time FIA Formula 1 Drivers’ World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart has been a Rolex Testimonee since 1968. Rolex is hardly adorning racers’ wrists with the same watches season after season. In 2009, the watchmaker introduced the Everose Daytona made with the brand’s exclusive 18K pink gold. It has calibre 4130 and the central sweep seconds hand allows an accurate reading of 1/8 second. As with all models, its Oyster case is nearly scratchresistant and waterproof to a depth of 100 meters. The diameter of the timepiece is 40mm and the bracelet features the Rolex-patented Easylink rapid extension system, which allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by up to 5mm. In 2016, the watchmaker released the Cosmograph Daytona with a Cerachrom steel bezel. Gentlemen, start your engines.

Clockwise from top left: A 2016 “Paul Newman” Daytona, known as the “panda face” for its black-and-white dial, resembles the original 1963 model; an aerial view of Daytona Beach, 1955; the finish line at Daytona International Speedway; a glimpse of Daytona International Speedway during a stunning sunset, 2016; Sir Malcolm Campbell, with the Bluebird V in 1935, after reaching a speed of 301 mph; Sir Jackie Stewart, F1 racer and 50-year Rolex Testimonee, who competed in 99 Formula 1 Grand Prix races and won 27 of them.

TIRED OF THAI, MEXICAN AND ITALIAN? TRY THE HEALTHY, TASTY FOOD OF ISRAEL. By Donna Rolando

cumin, paprika and cayenne, shakshuka is a hearty wake-up call for breakfast or brunch, but don’t be surprised to see it at the dinner table—it’s that versatile. There’s no right or wrong way to serve shakshuka, and plenty of recipes to prove it. Get creative and sprinkle in some feta cheese. Or let a seasonal veggie fare like eggplant introduce fresh variety to the egg core. If you’re looking for a dish that’s light yet filling at the same time, don’t pass up the chance to taste sabich, a hearty sandwich that can serve as lunch. Loaded atop a pita, there’s fried eggplant and hard-boiled eggs, along with Israeli salad, hummus and tahini. This popular dish is meatless but you won’t miss it as the sauce called amba wakes up your senses with a blend of pickled mangoes, turmeric and fenugreek. A familiar feature at falafel stands, the Israeli salad rounds out the recipe with a blend of tomato, cucumber and other diced veggies. For pasta like nothing you’ll find in an Italian restaurant but with winning qualities all its own, there’s Israeli couscous, also called ptitim. Devour this toasted, pearl-shaped pasta on its own with zuc-

chini, tomatoes and peppers. Or enjoy it as an accompaniment to a main dish such as grilled tilapia as the couscous inspires the chef ’s creativity. But what’s an Israeli meal without the Holy Land’s traditional dessert? Halvah, the sweet, tahini-based candy, gets its name from halwa, the Arabic word for sweet confection. It’s eaten in different variations across the globe but the Israeli version is made with sugar syrup, a sesame base and optional yummy accoutrements like seeds or nuts. It comes in slabs or in packaging, in flavors like chocolate or vanilla or a marble of both, and can be eaten as a dessert or as a companion to an Israeli breakfast. Halvah looks like fudge but is more crumbly in texture, but there really is no way to describe its unique taste. One should just try for himself. No matter how you indulge your curiosity about the wonderful world of Israeli cuisine, you’ll have no pangs of guilt. Remember that fresh and healthy ingredients are at the heart of this culinary style as you discover centuries-old taste sensations closer to home than ever.

Clockwise, from top left: Shakshuka, or “tomato eggs,” is a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner when paired with a fresh salad or bread for dipping; you won’t miss the meat on this ultimate vegetarian sandwich, the sabich, hugely popular in metropolitan Tel Aviv; couscous is a versatile, quick-cooking and delicious pasta; halvah is the perfectly sweet ending to your Middle Eastern meal.

LUX BOND & GREEN

They say everything old is new again, but here’s that truism on steroids. The “new” culinary revolution under way in the U.S. actually comes from traditions as old as time: Israeli fare with its winning combination of healthy ingredients and pizzazz. Look for it in hot spots like New York and L.A.—or in a neighborhood near you—as celebrated chefs embrace the trend and reap a bounty of awards. And if you know only hummus dip and falafel, it’s time to expand your culinary horizons by becoming familiar with a few dishes that many, many generations have enjoyed. Don’t let the name shakshuka fool you. Also spelled shakshouka, it may sound like something complicated, but this savory dish of poached eggs nesting in a spiced tomato stew is a one-skillet wonder that cooks up in a snap. This traditional Israeli meal with North African roots goes from stovetop to oven to table in just 40 minutes. (And, yes, it’s often served right in the skillet, taking simplicity to the max.) Soak up all that hearty goodness with challah or pitas, and you’re dining on shakshuka like a pro. With a zesty array of spices such as

WINE

rosé has its day Don’t blush—there’s no need to be embarrassed. Nowadays, it’s perfectly O.K. to like rosé. More than that, it’s cool. It puts you on the cusp of a cultural wave that has swept up wine lovers from coast to coast. Call it a rosergence. Jay-Z has rapped about it. Drew Barrymore has reveled it in, releasing her own label of pinot noir rosé. Although pink wine still represents a mere 1.5 percent of the total U.S. table wine market—a proverbial drop in the industry bucket—demand for it is swelling. From mid-2016 to mid-2017, domestic consumption of rosé increased 53 percent by volume, surging to $258 million in sales, according to a report last year by Forbes. Over that same period, sparkling rosé also enjoyed a bump, its sales jumping by nearly 20 percent. It all adds up to a serious turnabout in reputation for a wine once snickered at by sophisticates. Starting in the 1970s, and for the good part of a generation, rosé was widely seen as the sweet pink drink of fru-fru cocktail parties, a déclassé concoction for less-than-nuanced palates, much of it sold in jugs by the likes of Gallo and Sutter Home. White zinfandel was the variety by which many people then came to know rosé, and it was often said that the wine’s very existence owed to an error. According to a broadly circulated story, it was born in 1975 when Sutter Home winemaker Bob Trinchero botched a production, giving rise to a high-in-sugar wine with the saccharine character of a Hallmark card. To Trinchero’s surprise, consumers loved it. For better or worse, a phenomenon was born. This, of course, was another era; the American market was just catching on to wine. “In that sense, those sweet rosés were great for the industry,” says Niki Wente, a fifth-generation vintner at venerable Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. “They got a lot of people drinking and enjoying wine. And the more people learned, the more excited they became about the possibilities.” Wente is one of a growing number of young vintners who are unabashed in their embrace of rosé. Just last year, she expressed that fondness through the first release of Niki’s Pinot Noir Rosé, a crisp but complex wine that bears no resemblance to the cloying blushes of decades past. Dancing lightly on the palate, with notes of cantaloupe and orange zest, this rosé has a closer kinship to the traditionally bone-dry rosés of France, one of several countries where pink wine comes with a rich pedigree. Wide-ranging in its provenance, with deep roots in Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy, among other wine-producing powers, rosé is also made in myriad styles, from such varietals as pinot noir, grenache and gamay, to name just a few. It appears in shades that span the pink-hued spectrum, from the reddest raspberry to the palest salmon. But no matter its iteration, rosé, at its best, is bright, refreshing and a delicious food wine fit for all occasions. Hence the growing popularity of a wine-world catchphrase. Say it with us: Rosé all day!

It could be a wedding gathering at the famous resort Auberge du Soleil in California’s scenic Napa Valley, as featured in Jessica Kerwin Jenkins’ The Art of Entertaining (Rizzoli New York). Or it could be another celebration somewhere far from the vineyards, but where the golden light of just-before-dusk equally illumines the guests’ cheerfully colorful attire and the sparkling Dom Pérignon equally complements the succulent treats from the sea. Here the culinary preparations are by renowned chef Robert Curry; at your event they could be your own or the work of another artist in the kitchen. What matters is the vibe of effortless delight, and the way conversation seems to have an extra opportunity to sparkle. What matters is the moment—and the mood—and the memories you’ll make.
