Watches are similar to other consumer products like cars and computers, in that the brands we carry represent other people’s work. However, jewelry is an entirely different story. Yes, we select the best-of-the-best designer brands to offer in our store. However, items we design ourselves are the real treasure, whether the piece features emeralds, rubies, diamonds or semiprecious stones. We design and manufacture timeless treasures that are beautiful first and engineered for longevity second. LaViano jewelers has been servicing clients in Westwood, New Jersey, honestly for 80 years. Since our last edition of this magazine, we’ve
expanded with a second location in picturesque Warwick, New York, where Jeffrey LaViano moved in 2012. He wanted to create a presence there identical to that of our Westwood location, with the same attention to quality and service. Fate was on our side, and in 2018 we purchased the very famous and historic Bradner building, the first doctor’s office in Warwick built by Dr. Bradner in 1939. It was our goal to bring the building back to the grandness and presence it originally portrayed, and we renovated it to what you see today. We officially opened the doors in the fall of 2020 and have been pleased with the response from the community. We hope to be a landmark institution in the Hudson Valley for many generations to come. Our staff at both locations is eagerly awaiting your visit to help you find the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one. LAVIANO LOVE STORY: MEGHAN AND ERICH

Erich and Meghan met on a dating app in 2020. What intrigued Meghan was a picture of Erich “looking very handsome at a winery,” the bride says. She inquired about the type of wine Erich was tasting, and offered to bring along some cheese. What a line! It’s a true wonder that they didn’t meet earlier in life, having grown up just 15 minutes apart—she’s from Allendale, he’s from Washington Township. But thanks to technology, their paths (er, wires?) finally crossed. Their first date was on an exceedingly hot July evening at Surf City Bar in Jersey City. There was an instant connection, as they watched the boats go by along the Hudson River and discovered a mutual love of outdoor activities. It wasn’t long before they started spending most of their free time together, enjoying long bike rides along the Hudson River, hiking all over New York and New Jersey, playing tennis, taking weekend trips and spending lots of time with their families and friends. It became clear pretty quickly that they were made for each other. When it came time to buy an engagement ring, Erich knew he could trust LaViano to help him pick the perfect ring for Meghan. “Erich’s family has been shopping at LaViano for many years, so there was a trust and familiarity with the team there,” she says. He worked with sales associate Jeanne Dull, who helped him select a two-carat, round brilliant diamond with a four-prong setting on a platinum band with pavé diamonds. “It’s exactly what I wanted,” says Meghan. “It has beautiful sparkle! Erich proposed to Meghan when they were out on a morning run on the Fourth of July 2021 in the same spot where they met a year prior. They returned to LaViano and worked with Jeanne again to select their wedding bands a few months later: a classic platinum men’s wedding band for the groom and a diamond eternity band for the bride. They made it official at Assumption Church in Morristown on June 5, 2022, followed by a reception at the Park Savoy in Florham Park. “We’re enjoying married life,” Meghan says. “We’re planning a trip to Germany and Austria this November!”

We’re always fascinated by feats of human engineering, from skyscrapers to suspension bridges. But when it comes to making a stunning impression, our species’ creations still play second fiddle to the most dramatic scenes nature has to offer. Take Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon, for instance. Seeing images of them on the printed page and the TV or computer screen a thousand times doesn’t prevent that gulp of awed surprise when you first actually glimpse them. Here, from around the world, are seven other sights you simply must experience:

On rare occasions, the awe-inspiring aurora borealis (aka Northern Lights) can be seen in the lower 48 by lucky northern Minnesotans, Michiganders, Wisconsinites and the like who are in the right place at the right time. But to catch a consistent glimpse of this now-my-life-is-complete sight, a trip to Iceland is in order. In the land of fire and ice, the aurora—caused when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with Earth’s magnetic field, typically near the North and South poles—is almost always visible during a dark and clear night. That’s because light pollution is minimal in Iceland, located on the southern edge of the Arctic Circle. Peak viewing season is September through March, when nights are longest. Just be sure to check lunar schedules if you’re planning a trip to Reykjavik or Hella (which has an aurora alert service and outdoor hot tubs), as a full moon, while beautiful, can light up the night and spoil your aurora borealis moment.

THE GREAT MIGRATION, KENYA AND TANZANIA. There’s nothing ordinary about an African safari—for Westerners, catching a glimpse of lions, cheetahs, hyenas, rhinos and elephants in their natural habitat is always a thrill. But one event truly exceeds extraordinary: the migration of wildebeests from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya. More than 1 million wildebeests—and an equal number of zebras and other animals—are guided by their primal instincts toward the greener pastures that follow the region’s rain patterns. Though the weekslong journey occurs several times a year, the most spectacular herds migrate from the northern edge of the Serengeti to Masai Mara in late summer. Their trek, best seen with experienced drivers and guides, goes over dusty game trails that create National Geographic-worthy images as well as two rivers, the Mara and the Talek. Camera-ready tourists stationed at the waterways are warned of the dangers posed by the wildebeest stampede as well as those that await the wildebeests themselves as they cross the crocodile-infested waters.

RIVER OF FIVE COLORS, COLOMBIA.

Somewhere over the rainbow, there’s a land that you may never have heard of: Colombia’s Serrania De La Macarena National Park. The isolated mountain range here is on the boundaries that separate three distinct ecosystems: the Andes, the Eastern Llanos and the Amazon rainforest. And between those environments is Cano Cristales, a river whose name translates to “crystal channel.” But this isn’t a typical crystal-clear body of water—visitors over the years have declared it “the most beautiful river in the world.” It earns that title and its “river of five colors” nickname thanks to the black, blue, green, red and yellow aquatic plants (not algae) that grow along the riverbed from the end of July through November. Conditions must also be right to see the show: Water must be high enough for the plants to thrive but not so high that you can’t see the riverbed. In addition, bright sunlight is needed to reflect the colors. Getting there isn’t a walk in the park either. Travelers will likely have to fly into central Colombia, charter a plane to La Macarena then hire a guide to take them to the park. Start packing, because this once-in-a-lifetime sight shouldn’t be missed.

Once described by famed naturalist, conservationist and writer John Muir as the “grandest of all the special temples of nature,” California’s Yosemite National Park is home to its own list of wonders. The land serves as Earth’s bridge to the divine, highlighted by ancient sequoia trees that almost touch the heavens and granite cliffs like El Capitan and Half Dome that are so artfully carved they would make Michelangelo or Canova swoon. Visitors—the park gets around 4 million annually—also seek out Yosemite’s waterfalls, some of which are among the tallest in the country. Bridalveil Falls, located across El Capitan, is one of the most famous, but the smaller Horsetail Fall on the eastern edge of El Capitan may be the most special. It’s an ephemeral waterfall, usually flowing during winter months. And on certain evenings when conditions are perfect, the falling water will appear orange when it’s backlit by the sunset. The phenomenon is called Yosemite’s natural firefall, terminology that differentiates it from a former manmade tourist attraction where a bonfire was pushed off the edge of nearby Glacier Point.

BIOLUMINESCENT SHORES, THE MALDIVES. The Republic of Maldives is a group of islands located in the Indian Ocean off the southwest coasts of India and Sri Lanka, and it’s a bucket-list destination for longtime jet-setters and those who dare to dream. And what’s not to love? Though tourism is on the rise, the exotic islands are still relatively private and secluded, so you can enjoy paradise in peace. And paradise includes delicious cuisine, luxurious accommodations and breathtaking beaches. But a natural, underwater occurrence is perhaps the Maldives’ most famous attraction. The beaches of the 1,000+ islands, particularly Vaadhoo Island, are blanketed with microorganisms that can glow for up to one to two minutes at a time when they come in contact with the water’s surface. Scientifically speaking, the bioluminescent creatures contain a compound called luciferin, which, when exposed to oxygen, causes a chemical reaction that emits the bright blue glow. This aquatic light show is best viewed from June to October, when temperatures are warmer, and Vaadhoo is accessible by boat and ferry from Malé, the capital of the Maldives.

CHRISTMAS ISLAND CRAB MIGRATION, AUSTRALIA. Isn’t it only natural that there be a surprise in a place named for Christmas? An Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, the island is an unassuming wonderland that features pristine, deserted beaches, blessed with rare birds and filled with cultural festivals and culinary delights. But despite all the activity and R&R that happen here, aquatic adventures and marine life always take center stage, especially after the first rainfall of the wet season (October through January) when the migration of the Christmas Island red crab begins. Though not as Earth-moving as the Great Migration, the sudden relocation of bright red crabs from the forest to the ocean is pretty epic. For as long as 18 days, streams of red crabs can be seen leaving the wooded areas, climbing down cliff faces and crawling around obstacles on their way to the coast to breed and release eggs into the ocean. The annual event draws so many tourists that the local government installed crab road crossings, tunnels and safety walls to ensure the crustaceans a safe passage to the sea.

Chinese media call the formations of Zhangye National Geopark one of the country’s most beautiful landforms, and for good reason: The landscape is as complex as the layers of the Grand Canyon, as mysterious as the four vortexes in Sedona, Arizona—and as mouthwatering as fresh-baked rainbow cookies. Like many national parks, Zhangye Danxia (as it’s known locally) is equipped with boardwalks and access roads to aid exploration of the natural towers, pillars and ravines, but most of the two to three million annual visitors go to see the colors and patterns. And unlike the aforementioned cookies, the Technicolor striations of the mountains are all natural: They’re the result of centuries of tectonic shifts, climate changes and the erosion of red sedimentary rock beds.

THE CULTURE OF COGNAC Why is this spirit so hip? Exacting production and ageing standards tell part of the tale. By Harry Dowden
Crime novelist Mickey Spillane had a ready reason why his fictional hero, detective Mike Hammer, so often drank beer: “Because I can’t spell cognac.” But today pop culture has discovered the spirit, orthography be damned. Cognac is one of the most popular sips among the most influential stars. Appreciating a fine glass of XO is a sure sign of sophistication and taste, and its authenticity and no-compromises production are a big part of its appeal. Cognac is a complex beverage with a 500-year history, and it takes its name from the area in southwest France where it is made under a set of strict guidelines. Brandies can be produced all over, but only those from cognac itself may bear that moniker. Blends are composed of various eaux-de-vie (“waters of life”), twice copper-distilled wine (at least 90 percent Ugni Blanc varietal) that must age for a minimum of two years in oak (Limousin or Tronçais only, s’il vous plaît). The four blends on the next page rest for much, much longer, however. A “young” cognac is still a delectable and smooth experience, but age brings the elixir to another level. Kick back with a snifter and the things you enjoy most in life—you may not be jet-setting in a G6 like some of cognac’s biggest fans, but you’ll feel on top of the world. (A quick note on nomenclature: Until recently, for a cognac to be deemed XO—extra old—required that the youngest blend component have remained in oak for six years. But that minimum was raised to 10 years—cognacs with threads below that age now receive the Napoléon grade, the next one down.)

LOUIS XIII Beloved by iconic singer Rihanna, Louis XIII is one of the most exceptional cognacs available. One hundred percent of the wines distilled for this blend are from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne cru, the premier subsection of six in the region whose harvests can be tapped for the beverage. Each bottle of Louis XIII contains 1,200 blend components, meticulously sifted through and chosen. This is after only a “small” portion of eaux-de-vie are selected for the elusive path. The kicker? The cognac’s age makes a long-in-the-tooth 10-year XO minimum look like the blink of an eye. The minimum age for a LXIII blend component is 40 years, and some threads surpass the century-old mark. The impressive age inspires a wide array of tasting notes, from the tropical to the earthy. The extended process has also lent the team a long-term vision that allows for careful con- sideration of processes, and an examination of our engagement with the passage of time. A collaborative effort with rapper and cognac connoisseur Pharrell Williams titled “100 Years” is both an homage to the lengthy creation process of the esteemed cognac and a plea to those who’d wish to pass on the tradition: a song, locked away, that will automatically release in 2117—if climate change and sea-level rise permit. Recommended pairing: Barring dramatic medical advances, most of us won’t be able to hear what could be Mr. Williams’ magnum opus. Instead, spin a copy of Random Access Memories from another of France’s finest exports, the electronic music duo Daft Punk. Their retro-futuristic sounds will lay the perfect backdrop for the waves of flavor that a glass of Louis XIII offers.

Bold yet smooth, rich yet filled with subtleties, Hennessy has made a name as a luxury beverage of choice among creatives across different media. Arguably the first to use the XO distinction, Henny, as it’s lovingly referred to, is an excellent sipper and all-around cognac. Notably using only the Ugni Blanc varietal, each bottle of Hennessy XO comprises 100 blending components. This depth of composition has led to a specific set of seven flavor notes that describe the journey through a pour of the elixir: Sweet Notes, Rising Heat, Spicy Edge, Flowing Flame, Chocolate Lull, Wood Crunches and Infinite Echo. These notes were deemed so evocative that acclaimed director Ridley Scott was commissioned to compose a sci-fi tribute exploring each of the “Seven Worlds.” The special Marc Newson edition of the XO is another shining example of Hennessy’s collaborative spirit, showing a commitment to an aesthetic that prizes presentation alongside flavor. The designer’s reworking of the distinctive decanter utilizes horizontal striations to visually highlight both glass and liquid, and creates a uniquely textured object that reflects cognac’s many facets. Recommended pairing: Savor a glass or two while watching Scott’s sci-fi watershed Blade Runner. Get your hands on 2007’s The Final Cut to appreciate the director’s true vision for the film as you do the same with the work of Hennessy’s blenders.
COURVOISIER XO A focus on techniques from the house of Courvoisier leads to an incredibly smooth product. Working closely with many growers across four crus, producers take pride every step of the way. That is reflected not just in the distillate, but also in the oak that houses it. For both grape and wood, the process begins from the ground up. Two-hundred-year-old oak is selected by in-house coopers, and staves are dried for three years before the barrels are complete. A year’s worth of grapes undergo primary fermentation before they are ready for cognac’s signature double distillation. Sipping straight will be an immersive experience filled with big floral notes alongside caramel and dried citrus— think snacking on candied orange in a lush meadow. If you choose to mix it up a bit, Courvoisier recommends a classic sidecar: 5 parts cognac, 2 parts triple sec, 2 parts lemon juice, shaken well and strained. Recommended pairing: Take a listen to mile-aminute wordsmith Busta Rhymes’ early-aughts party hit, “Pass the Courvoisier Part II.” Pharrell Williams’ hook and his production as part of the Neptunes are just as smooth as the indelible beverage.
RÉMY MARTIN XO This is a classic take on the spirit and one that has showed immense staying power. The blend, with up to 400 components, is referred to as a Cognac Fine Champagne—its grapes sourced exclusively from vineyards in two of the region’s crus, Grande Champagne (50 percent+) and Petite Champagne. The particular soil’s terroir encourages the level of ripeness in the grapes that makes the wine well-suited for the 24-hour double distillation process. The eaux-de-vie that are produced from the distillation processes each year can number in the thousands, but many will not meet the standards required for them to be set down for a transformation in oak. Years later, we are finally able to taste the product of this patience, hard work and informed selection. A drop of water can open up the cognac and enhance some of the more subtle fruity and spicy aromatics, just as it does with a fine whisky. Fatty cheeses and bold dark chocolates are among the great foods that pair well with cognac, but for its own XO, Rémy Martin recommends figs—a sweet treat that will bring out dried fruit flavors in the liquid that only time can develop. If you want your cognac consumption to be a truly cinematic experience, check out the limited-edition XO packaging for the Cannes Film Festival. Recommended pairing: Kick back and take in the movie Port Authority, whose cast and crew made history voguing across the red carpet at Cannes. THE LAVIANO LEGACY

Family-owned-and-operated since 1945, LaViano Jewelers founder Michael J. LaViano got his start in jewelry and watchmaking as a youngster in Italy and New York City. Michael J. LaViano, founder of LaViano Jewelers in Westwood, New Jersey, was the second generation of LaVianos in United States. However, the roots of the LaViano family as watchmakers and jewelers date back to the mid 1800s in Potenza, Italy, located in the providence of Napolitano. It all began when Michael’s father immigrated to the United States around 1890 and set up a shop on Madison Avenue in New York City, where he dabbled in jewelry and clocks. Shortly after the turn of the century, he returned to Italy, married and had three children, Donald, Michael and Victoria. For reasons that are not entirely clear, he left Italy, returned to NYC and re-established his shop on Madison Avenue. His sons, Michael and Donald, came to New York in the 1920s, and Michael joined his father in the jewelry and watch business. One of Michael’s weekly responsibilities was to visit the brownstones of New York’s high society and wind all their clocks, a healthy first exposure to wealth. By the late 1930s, with WWII on the horizon, Michael, now an accomplished watchmaker, took a position with Bendix Aviation, producing sensitive altimeters for the U.S. army aircraft. In 1945, as the war was winding down, Michael left Bendix and started LaViano, a fledgling jewelry business in Westwood. From the inception of the business, Michael strived to make LaViano Jewelers synonymous with high quality products, from diamonds to Rolex watches. He even created the catchphrase “escape from the ordinary,” which was later used in promotional materials for General Motors. As the area in Bergen County transitioned from rural to more residential, the business grew and grew, and word spread about this exceptional store tucked in Northeast Bergen County. By the 1960s the name LaViano was well-known in the region, and the store has thrived on one very simple formula: Treat people with dignity and honesty, have fairpriced product and most importantly, always make your client’s interest the first and foremost priority. Now, in 2022, LaViano Jewelers has two locations in Westwood and rural Warwick, New York. Few things remain the same today as they did at the start of the 20th century. However, LaViano Jewelers still embraces the responsibility to our clients to only endorse the finest pieces, and we’ve since expanded our range of services. We have two full-time bench jewelers on staff with a combined 75 years of experience, who can repair items, hand-make a new mounting for your diamond, size your ring or help design custom creations in our House of LaViano custom shop. For more than 75 years, our business has evolved into one of the most respected independent jewelry stores in the country, and is still family-owned to this day, now run by Michael’s son, Jack, and grandson, Jeffrey.
