e live in the Age of More, and much of that more is overwhelming: more news (mostly bad), more data, more competitive social media posts, more empty calories, more record-setting weather...it’s no wonder we all feel the need to decompress, and we feel better when we can shed some of the clutter—whether mental or material—of daily life. That’s especially true during the winter holidays, which bring their own kinds of stress. The remedy is surely to focus on family and home—to relax and enjoy the simpler things in life. What’s that got to do with jewelry? We find that tastes have evolved, and the reasons for buying jewelry have changed. People no longer feel the need for a carbon-copy diamond tennis bracelet to keep up with the Joneses. Rather, lifestyle jewelry at a sensible price point has become the more typical purchase. And whether purchased as a gift or for oneself, the reason is usually to celebrate one of life’s milestones (or simply to celebrate life), not to proclaim status. There’s a growing desire for uniqueness and individuality in jewelry. I see this as a very welcome trend because it frees people to acquire what really excites them, as opposed to what they think they ought to own. At LaViano, we’ve responded to this trend in two ways: First, we’re designing many of our own pieces, which we’re able to build on the premises because we have both a goldsmith and a platinumsmith on staff. Thus, we’re able to offer one-of-a-kind products

at reasonable prices. (And here’s a tip: If you own jewelry that you don’t absolutely love and wear often, bring it in to trade or to have the stones incorporated in a brand-new custom design.) Second, we’ve introduced new collections and designers that you’re unlikely to find elsewhere. The line called My Story (see page 26) is a perfect example: It’s designed to celebrate life’s special moments and touch off happy memories; the pieces have a uniqueness to them, and they just make the wearer feel good. Another example is Pamela Froman, a designer who often works in mixed precious metals and puts a lot of hand-work into her jewelry. Again, the result is a very pleasing individuality. Her pieces have soul, and they’re guaranteed to bring a smile to the wearer’s face time and time again! Read more about them on page 23. Plenty more jewelry is featured throughout this magazine; on the cover (and in the “Rustic Romantic” spread beginning on page 70), you’ll even see a horse that’s perfectly accessorized. I’d like to give special thanks to Dan Capone for lending us Shaker for the day. On behalf of the entire LaViano family and our valued associates, I wish you a joy-filled and stress-free holiday season, and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

For those moments when you’re not sweating it out, Tapestrie boasts a wide array of tops, pants, sweaters and more by designers including Bela NYC, Lysse, Kinross Cashmere (pictured) and Alberto Makali. THE
LAVIANO GUIDE OUR LATEST CRUSH
When Pamela Froman founded her eponymous jewelry line in 2006, she had one mission: To create collectible works of art that would actually be worn—not locked away in a safe deposit box. The L.A.-based designer has certainly succeeded: Her brand is being hailed for its “one-of-a-kind masterpieces” that are as visually stunning as they are wearable. Froman begins by hand-selecting gemstones and diamonds, then pairing them with platinum, 22k gold and different colors of 18k gold. Each piece is finished with her signature texture—a special handhammering technique that she christened “crushed.” Not only does it provide “a softer, natural feel to the metal,” Froman says, but it also makes each and every item 100 percent unique. Froman’s creations are now available at LaViano Jewelers— we’re crushing on them, and we bet you will be too.

HOLIDAY 2017
Fans hungry for the work of one of our celebrated artists will grab Dinner with Georgia O’Keeffe (Assouline, $50). In it, author Robyn Lea explains that food wasn’t just fuel for O’Keeffe, it was an art form. Lea pored over O’Keeffe’s archives and interviewed people who knew her to identify the dishes she held dear and includes recipes and notes about the artist’s personal touches. The food is as colorful as you’d expect from O’Keeffe, who lived for years in vibrant New Mexico. By juxtaposing culinary creations with her work—the blood red of a bourbon steak with her 1931 painting “Dark and Lavender Leaves,” for example—the book illustrates good taste at its tastiest.

ROB AND DANIELLE: A LOVE STORY
When people hear the words “ice” and “Laviano Jewelers,” they immediately think of our incredible diamond collection—except for bride-and-groom-to-be Rob and Danielle. The couple’s heart-melting love story began when they met in high school and started dating; eventually, Rob introduced Danielle to his parents during a very special outing. “We went ice skating at Rockefeller Center,” says Danielle. “I was a figure skater and Rob was a hockey player, so I loved having someone who could actually keep up with me on the ice! We had such a great day.” Unfortunately, it wasn’t all smooth skating: When Rob got a hockey scholarship that required lots of travel, the couple broke up. But two years later, they reconnected and, as Danielle says, “We went right back into the swing of things and have been together ever since.” The next logical step? A marriage proposal—and luckily for us, Danielle had always been fond of Rob’s mother’s ring, which just happened to be made at LaViano Jewelers. “My family always had an inside joke: ‘Whenever you are ready, we have to go to LaViano. Don’t go anywhere but to see Jeff LaViano!’” Rob says. And in November 2016, he did just that. “We took a trip to LaViano Jewelers to meet with Jeff, and he helped us pick out the perfect ring for Danielle.” Now it was time to pop the question—and Rob did it at a place that held many special memories for him and his intended: Rockefeller Center. On December 6, 2016, after an evening on the ice and in front of the couple’s beaming families, Rob proposed as Florida Georgia Line’s “Holy” played over the rink’s loud speaker. “The moment I heard our song, I had a feeling that this was a very special moment,” Danielle says. “Then before I knew it, he got down on one knee right on the ice in front of everyone!” Of course, she replied with a great big “yes,” and now the couple is planning to say “I do” next June. As for their wedding bands? They’ve already scheduled a visit to LaViano to pick them out. After all, Rob isn’t one to break from family tradition—especially when everything about it has been so splendidly smooth.

THE PERFECT FIT
Finding the perfect engagement ring for your intended is easy as 1-2-3 (and 4) thanks to LaViano’s custom-made coaster that doubles as a ring sizer. The nifty device, which can be picked up at a slew of NJ eateries (check out lavianojewelers.com/participating-locations for the full list), even comes with instructions: 1. Insert finger of significant other to determine ring size. 2. Visit LaViano Jewelers. 3. Pop the question. 4. Live happily ever after! Best of all, those who punch out part of the coaster and bring it into the store will be entered in a raffle. The prize: a $1,000 shopping spree at LaViano—ensuring that some very lucky couples (drawings are twice a year) have an extra spring in their step when they walk down the aisle.
NOW THAT’S THE SPIRIT
A historic 1788 gristmill is distilling its very own spirits—and offering some of the finest New American cuisine in Hudson County. In 2005, Ralph Erenzo and Brian Lee founded the Tuthilltown Spirits Farm Distillery in Gardiner, NY; today, it distills Indigenous Vodka from apples grown at nearby orchards, along with the gaining-fame Hudson Whiskey line, which uses grain harvested by farmers less than 10 miles away. Curious to see how it all happens? A Visitor Center offers tours of the distillery and bottling room and—even better—invites guests to sample the establishment’s collection of whiskeys, vodkas, gins, liqueurs and other handmade spirits. As for that cuisine: An onsite restaurant, Tuthill House at the Mill, serves seasonal fare (and, of course, signature cocktails). Some of the menu’s highlights: the Spring Vegetable Cassoulet (with haricot verts, romano and fava bean stew, asparagus, artichoke, tomato, olive oil and bread crumbs) and the Pave of Braised Lamb Leg (with spring onions, breakfast radishes, broccoli and garlic puree, and nasturtium leaves). For dessert, we’re partial to the Lemon Thyme Panna Cotta, with white chocolate ganache, chocolate soil, poppy seed tuile and blueberries, but check out the restaurant—and all Tuthilltown has to offer—to see what raises your spirits the most. 14 GRIST MILL LANE, GARDINER, NY, 845.255.1527, TUTHILLTOWN.COM

THE LAVIANO GUIDE
BECAUSE ‘EVERY WOMAN HAS A STORY’
To commemorate the birth of her daughter, Jackie Cohen created a very special ring—and started the My Story Fine Jewelry line in the process. The former Wall Street trader-turned-jewelry designer had traveled a bumpy road to motherhood: 40 and single, she struggled with IVF treatments for a year and a half before deciding to adopt. Finally (and blissfully), she welcomed her daughter Julia—and soon began making the aforementioned ring. The result: a baguette-cut citrine to mark Julia’s November birthday with diamond pavé on the band and Julia’s name engraved on the inside. Later, Cohen even created a rose gold pendent engraved with the coordinates of where Julia was born. People took notice: When her jewelry became constant conversation pieces, Cohen began taking orders for others— and the My Story line was officially, well, born. Today the brand features necklaces that range from dogtags adorned with a baguette colored stone and white accent diamonds to mini bar pendants with princess cut colored stones; earrings go from skinny oval hoops with a baguette colored stone and milgrain accents to stick earrings with diamonds. Bracelets and rings round out the line, and each item can be personalized with the likes of initials, select birthstones and more. “Every woman has a story,” says Cohen, whose line is now available at LaViano. “Tell yours in color, share it, celebrate it, and always keep it close to your heart.”

No wonder Laura Bicego pursued a career in jewelry—it’s in her genes. In fact, the girl who grew up to found Nanis Italian Jewels never even had formal educational training; born into a family of jewelers on the countryside of Vicenza, Italy, she learned her trade from atelier experience at her father’s factory. Fast-forward to 1990, when Bicego and her husband Piero Marangon created Nanis and began “home-growing” a stable of artisans. Today they lovingly produce a collection replete with 18k gold, diamonds and natural stones—with each piece boasting trademark touches such as hand engraving and brush polishing, plus a decidedly Italian influence. See the best of Bicego at LaViano, where her Nanis Italian Jewels collection is waiting for your perusal.

THE LEADING MAN
Hardy Soul On or off screen, there’s a rebel streak in British actor-producer Tom Hardy.
I
Still, Hardy’s badness wasn’t just image. In youth he got caught in a stolen Mercedes with a friend—and a firearm. And his drug problem, till he got sober in 2003, was serious. “Tom, you need to wake up,” he says he told himself. We’re all jarred awake when he bares his chest—he’s seen to that, having tattooed himself with everything from Buddha to the London skyline. (Reportedly his Oscar nomination lost him a bet with DiCaprio, obliging him to add “Leo knows everything” in script to his muchdecorated bod.) But he’s interesting in clothes too. Often seen casually wearing a leather bomber jacket, ripped jeans and a T-shirt (perhaps one showing him choking Revenant director Alejandro Iñárritu—he had such shirts made as a gag after a disagreement), he also cleans up with flair, as the premiere proved. The two-time dad just turned 40, and a guy does change. But even a mellower Hardy will always love outré haircuts, brass snake belt buckles and juicy villain roles. And as an actor, he’s not bad.
Clockwise from top left: Hardy cut a dapper figure at the premiere of Legend, wearing a three-piece suit and skinny tie; Hardy’s piercing blue eyes have won him legions of female fans; for the UK premiere of The Revenant, Hardy chose a grey double-breasted Burberry suit; often sporting an unkempt beard, Hardy is known for his scruffy facial hair.
HOLIDAY 2017
s moviedom’s “bad boy” mellowing? Actorproducer Tom Hardy’s trademark feistiness about directors was AWOL in July at the London premiere of the World War II actioner Dunkirk. Wearing a three-piece, diamond-printed Gucci suit with a burgundy pocket square and a whitecollared, vertical-striped blue shirt, he purred praise for director Christopher Nolan: “I’ll do anything for him—within reason.” Maybe it’s the characters he plays. The brawny Brit left a bloody Leo DiCaprio in the woods to die in his Oscar-nominated turn in 2015’s The Revenant. But his RAF pilot in Dunkirk only assaulted the enemy from the cockpit of a Spitfire. Or maybe Hardy’s always been a secret pussycat. The son of an artist (Anne) and an ad executive/comedy writer (Edward “Chips”), he grew up in the London suburb East Sheen and oozed into acting at London’s Drama Centre, snagging 2001 roles in TV’s Band of Brothers and the movie Black Hawk Down. He’s even collaborated on projects with Dad, though his career proves he’s more than a block off the old Chips.

FEEL THE BREEZE
Named after the Andean god of wind, the Pagani Huayra Roadster is a perfect blend of performance and style that will leave its drivers breathless. Italian maker Pagani blew the roof off of the Huayra Coupe to create its airier, lighter and faster cousin. The Roadster is a true combination of innovative design and sheer power (a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged Mercedes AMG V12 ensures the latter), and it’s the ultimate ride to get from point A to point B—if your intention is to turn heads and get to your destination as fast as possible.
Because every part of the Huayra Roadster is hand-built, production of each car is expected to be slower than most. Company founder Horatio Pagani says it’s the most complicated project he’s undertaken—and that’s the reason only 100 of these supercars will be manufactured.
At 2,821 pounds, the Roadster is 176 pounds lighter than its predecessor, the Huayra Coupe. With less weight and new carbon-titanium paneling, the Roadster can complete the 0–60 sprint in a blistering sub-3 seconds. Whew!
For comfortable driving in a variety of conditions, a state-of-the-art electronic stability control system (ESC) features five modes: Wet, Comfort, Sport, Race and ESC off.
Four movable flaps—two in the front and a pair in the back—improve downforce and help maintain stability, especially when the top is down.
Pirelli developed P Zero Corsa tires specifically for the Huayra Roadster. Pagani says the tires enable 1.80 g of lateral grip—a major factor for that 0–60 time.

A large, fresh air intake and a front-end splitter help generate speed. Both were designed to optimize the vehicle’s aerodynamics.

Circular taillights on both sides of a bank of four exhaust pipes play up the curves and rounded edges of the car’s body.
The centerpiece of the Huayra Roadster’s interior is the seven-speed, single-clutch paddleshift gearbox.

In this Pacific archipelago you’ll dodge iguanas, swim with sea lions and commune with Darwin’s ghost— and that’s only part of the magic of these “enchanted” islands. By Rita Guarna

t first I was reluctant. This was a cruise, and a cruiser I’m not. I cringe at the thought of prescribed mealtimes, lounge acts and forced fun, and I also tend toward motion sickness. So a proposed journey to the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific didn’t immediately float my boat. But reports of that destination’s stunning beauty and unrivaled glimpses of nature—going all the way back to 19th-century English naturalist Charles Darwin— were so persuasive, you could say my thinking evolved. I convinced myself that this once-in-alifetime journey would be worth it. Nature is indeed the Galápagos’ raison d’être. So it stands to reason that there are strict environmental regulations here and that there’s nary a golf course or chain restaurant to be found. Never mind. You can golf again when you’re back in an ordinary place. Named Las Islas Encantadas—the Enchanted Islands—by the first explorers to arrive in the 16th century, the Galápagos provides an otherworldly experience. For one thing, it’s remote: This archipelago of 19 islands (not to mention some 100-plus islets and rocks) straddles the equator more than 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Volcanic eruptions formed these parts between 3 million and 5 million years ago, making conditions quite harsh. Still, you’d have to say indigenous life adapted resourcefully; roughly 2,000 plant and animal species found here exist nowhere else in the world. This is a wildlife-watching destination on steroids, where humans play second fiddle to the all-star animal cast. Where else besides a zoo can you see penguins and tortoises on the same trip? My cruise-phobia quickly waned. It helped that we set sail on the MV Origin, a 20-passenger yacht launched last year that is part of the Ecoventura fleet. (The company has been in the expedition cruising business some 20 years and knows these islands.) Plus, we didn’t exactly have to rough it: Our stateroom was spacious and featured panoramic windows perfect for spying the area’s unique topography. And there’s a roomy Jacuzzi and fitness center on board and a library. Add to that twice-daily excursions led by certified naturalists (10 passengers per guide to ensure an intimate experience), nightly briefings and the use of wet suits (you’ll need them as the water is cold several months of the year), snorkel equipFrom top, the blue-footed booby lives mostly on water but uses land to breed and rear young. Nearly one-half of the world’s breeding pairs nest on Galápagos Islands and islets like Punta Pitt. Tourists can take a wooden staircase to the summit of a dormant volcano on Bartolomé Island, a small isle off the tip of Santiago. The Galápagos giant tortoise, which can weigh up to 920 pounds, is native to seven of the Galápagos Islands and can readily be seen in their natural habitat at Rancho El Manzanillo on Santa Cruz.

ment and kayaks, and you have the makings of a perfect trip. From our first minutes on San Cristóbal, we were confronted with creatures completely unperturbed by humans. We were told to keep our distance and not to touch them (or anything, for that matter), but they heeded no such warning about us. As if on cue, a large land iguana swaggered onto the path, its resplendent yellow skin glowing in the sunlight. Actually, it’s tough to keep clear of the lizards, tortoises and even sea lions that co-exist with us. They’re a fearless and curious lot, and while it’s a tad disconcerting at first, soon these face-to-fauna encounters are not only welcome, they’re almost expected. You can’t help but wonder if this is how Darwin felt back in 1835, when after weeks of studying the native plants and animals, the young naturalist developed his theory of evolution and in so doing introduced the islands to the world. It wasn’t until 1959, however, that the archipelago became Ecuador’s first national park, and the islands were

named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Only time will decide which of our extraordinary encounters remain with my fellow passengers and me. Will it be the turtles gracefully swimming alongside us or our front row seat as sea lions and dolphins performed what appeared to be a carefully choreographed dance? Then there were the marine iguanas, sea snakes and sharks—yes, sharks that abounded. The islands are home to some two dozen types of sharks, from whale sharks and hammerheads to black-tip and Galápagos sharks. I’m not sure when exactly it dawned on me that this is what it means, truly, to commune with nature. On one snorkeling “tour,” for example, a manta ray swam up to me and flitted about before gliding into the deep. There’s the comical gait of the blue-footed boobies, the nimble prancers, aka Sally Lightfoot crabs, Darwin’s finches, the waved albatross, and of course, the frigatebird, whose wrinkled throat can inflate like a bright red balloon. Was it my imagination, or did these creatures all seem to share a buoyant spirit just this side of gloating? That would make sense. After all, they get to live there, while I’m reduced to obsessively plotting my next cruise.
62

This page from top: Whether in a stately room or on deck, views from the MV Origin are breathtaking. Fine dining and freshness are guranteed on the boat and on the islands. After a long day of exploring the land and sea, take a relaxing soak in the Origin’s Jacuzzi to unwind. Opposite clockwise from top: The Galápagos land iguana can be found in places like South Plaza, a small uplift with tall cliffs just off of Santa Cruz. During breeding season, the male frigatebird will inflate its wrinkled throat to attract potential mates. Darwin’s finches vary in size, from 10 to 20 centimeters. Sea stacks, tuff formations and smaller islands are accessible by kayak, available through the Origin.

The Connaught Bar London
SPRING/SUMMER 2017
I’ve been haunting European watering holes for decades, but I don’t think I’ve ever sat in a more spectacular drinking establishment than the Connaught Bar. It’s located in the five-star Connaught Hotel, London’s most sublime cocoon of luxury. I used to meet friends at the hotel’s lively, clubby and more casual Coburg Bar, which is still there. But in 2008, designer David Collins oversaw the construction of the dramatic Connaught Bar, an Art Deco temple to all cocktails and a nod to the hotel’s heyday. Collins was essentially given carte blanche to go over the top, and he did just that, inspired by English and Irish Cubist art of the 1920s. The result is a palace with textured walls of platinum silver leaf, mirrors galore, low lighting and leather banquettes, and it feels like a set with you at center stage, a throwback to the glorious, dandified 1920s. You might well think of Brideshead Revisited, and indeed, all the Bright Young Things of today are the habitués. You might go with a drink like Vieux Connaught, made with Ron Zacapa 23 rum, Bulleit Rye, a blend of dry vermouths, Bénédictine, saffron smoke, and Angostura and orange bitters. Or go gaga over the limited-edition champagnes, spirits and liqueurs. You can even speak with Agostino Perrone, director of mixology at the Connaught Bar, if you want something more extravagant. But the classic reason to settle in here—apart from a celebrity sighting like Gwyneth Paltrow, a frequent visitor—is to order a drink from their legendary Martini Trolley. It’s martini as sacrament, painstakingly prepared tableside, using made-in-house bitters and vermouths. These martinis are always stirred, never shaken. Little wonder then that the Connaught Bar took home the “World’s Best Bar” award at 2016’s Tales of the Cocktail festival.

Dry Martini and Speakeasy Barcelona
| LAVIANO
The concept of Dry Martini and Speakeasy, which opened 30 years ago, might have been dreamt by a Spanish surrealist like Salvador Dali. It starts with a bar called Dry Martini. Now, hidden in the backroom of this classic cocktail bar is a very small restaurant called Speakeasy. So the bar is in the open, quite public, and the restaurant is hidden. Got that? Speakeasy started as an informal restaurant for bar-goers who needed a little sustenance after a few martinis too many. A password was even needed to gain entry. It’s no longer password-protected, so you can now safely reserve a table there. It’s still charming and has a playful air of mystery, vaguely recalling a romanticized version of New York and Chicago speakeasies during the Prohibition Era. There are just a handful of tables in a handsome setting, with walls of stacked liquor and wines, all backlit. But for my money, Dry Martini is the main attraction. It’s all about green leather, velvet drapes and brass fittings. There’s a wooden bar and wooden paneling, and it looks and feels like a classic English hotel bar from the 19th century. It began life as a so-called “Martineria” serving only martinis. It serves other cocktails now, but you will do well to stick to the original, because you will rarely have a tastier one anywhere in the world. Waiters clad in white jackets make an absolutely perfect signature dry gin martini, presented on a silver tray, poured from a shaker right in front of you into a classic martini glass. These guys are masters of the martini art, which is why Dry Martini was singled out as one of the best gin bars in the world by industry journal Drinks International. It’s long been considered the best bar in Barcelona, and I like it because you rub shoulders with lots of locals here, not just wide-eyed visitors.

Harry’s New York Bar Paris Generations of Americans have made a beeline to this venerable watering hole since it opened in 1911 as “The New York Bar.” The first bartender, Harry MacElhone, ended up owning the joint and more than a century later, his family still does. Long a haunt of writers, artists and expats—Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald drank here, along with other members of the so-called “Lost Generation” of the 1920s—it’s still quite clubby. I can still recall the first time I saw the ad for Harry’s in the back pages of the International Herald Tribune, decades ago, long before the Internet came along. It gave the bar’s name and in parentheses read “Sank Roo Doe Noo.” Code? Well, sort of. It’s a phonetic pronunciation of the bar’s address, 5 Rue Danou. The ad ran for years in the IHT, and it was designed so that a newly arrived Yank in Paris, unfamiliar with the French language but eager to go to the storied Harry’s, could shout it at a taciturn Paris cab driver and get there in a hurry. Even today, the bar itself is a set director’s dream—think Midnight in Paris— dimly lit, with wooden walls lined with a century’s worth of memorabilia. This is a classy drinking establishment, and there’s a piano bar downstairs with red banquettes, a space where George Gershwin is said to have penned “An American in Paris.” In the 1940s, Harry’s was a favored haunt of British novelist Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. In Casino Royale, in fact, Bond referred to Harry’s as the best place in Paris to get a “solid drink.” Solid drinks are still what to expect here, and the food is completely beside the point. Harry’s claims credit for inventing both the Bloody Mary and the Sidecar. In this dimly lit bar, the bartenders in white coats will look at you sideways if you ever utter the term “mixologist.” The best advice is to man up and go for one of the preferred tipples: a Manhattan or a dry martini.

Prinzipal Kreuzberg Berlin
| LAVIANO
You can call it time travel to the Weimar years, to a burlesque bar with tassleclad women on trapeze swings. Prinzipal Kreuzberg is a self-proclaimed “Rabbit Hole” where Alice in Wonderland and Lord-knows-who-else might be found in anything-goes Berlin. On weekdays, it’s a decent and classy bar that offers cocktails and jazz. But on Saturday nights, it becomes something else—Cabaret with a side of David Bowie, with elaborately costumed and un-costumed participants who might keep you out until dawn. In this small, packed space with blinking lights, there’s a touch of Moulin Rouge Paris of the 1920s mixed with the Berlin portrayed by Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli. It’s all a bit raunchy, as the Weimar years were. Entrance is through an unmarked doorway on Oranienstrasse in Berlin’s Kreuzberg neighborhood. Think lots of crystal glassware, bowtie-wearing bartenders, mirrored walls and the odd sense of being inside a burlesque star’s dressing room, which, in fact, you might be, since the doors to those rooms are usually open. Waitresses in corsets and feather boas serve you drinks that use syrups, infusions and bitters that are all made in-house. They have bizarre concoctions like the Bloody Betty, made with vodka, Scotch, house-spiced tomato and white balsamic. They get even stranger, like the Eflatun Royale, with cognac, lavender, lemon and crémant. There’s also the oddly named Potion of Sykei, with gin, fig-infused vermouth and blue cheese. Of course, not everything may be what it seems. Berlin has long been the mistress of the tease, documented so well by Christopher Isherwood in his Berlin Stories, the very basis of Cabaret. So while there are plenty of femme fatales disrobing on stage, other “ladies” may well be something else indeed. A Saturday night spent here is decadence writ large.

Jerry Thomas Speakeasy Rome The Jerry Thomas Speakeasy, a hidden boîte in Rome, is sort of the anti-Rome, the last thing you’d expect to find in the city. The bar, which opened in 2010, is named after a legendary or possibly fictional 19th-century American bartender. That’s sort of beside the point. Getting inside is the challenge. In a 21st-century version of the old speakeasies, where entry was provided only to those who knew the password, the password for Jerry Thomas Speakeasy comes from a multiple choice question on the bar’s website. The question always has something to do with some aspect of the cocktail, and it changes all the time. Recently the question was, “Which one is the most known drink by Trader Vic?” You could choose from Zombie, Mai Tai or Suffering Bastard, though most Americans of a certain age would know that the middle response was the correct answer. Armed with the password, you can now make a booking for the same evening. But where is this place? In Vicolo Cellini, an otherwise nondescript street near Chiesa Nuova. Inside it’s small, dimly lit, and jammed with about 40 people. It’s a bit of a squeeze, but I’ve always felt that the best bars are small spaces. If you can’t find a spot on one of the vintage leather couches, you’ll be perched on a barstool, filling out the requisite membership card and paying in cash for the privilege of drinking with Roman hipsters with perfect stubble to the sounds of jazz. The downside is that it can be awfully smoky. The upside is that if you’re one of those Yanks who think that dinner in Trastevere and a stroll along the Tiber is the real Roma—I count myself among them—it’s a passport to a side of the Eternal City that you never knew existed. Plan on sticking to classics like Manhattans, Sazeracs and Old Fashioneds, because the entire place is an homage to the American cocktail. The hours are restricted to Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

BRILLIANT CUTS
WHAT THE PROS SAY Combined, these cherished members of the LaViano Jewelers family have been bringing their expertise to the store for almost a century. CATALIN
BERT
SALES ASSOCIATE/BUYER How long have you been working at LaViano Jewelers? Thirty years. I actually was just filling in for the summer, and here I am 30 years later. The time has flown by. What do you see trending in your area of expertise? Yellow gold and all-time classics are coming back. Colored stones are becoming more popular, but diamonds are forever. What’s your most unforgettable moment at LaViano? When my husband fell very ill, I received a lot of support from everyone at LaViano. Jack and Jeffrey were very understanding of my need to care for my husband. When you’re not working, what do you do to relax? For me to relax, I need to be active. I love to travel and experience new things. I especially enjoy boating, dancing, dining and gardening. Most of all, I love spending time with my family.
WATCH STORE MANAGER How long have you been working at LaViano Jewelers? I started as a part-timer in 1995 and then accepted a full-time position. I have been working fulltime for all these years in IT and web development, but my passion has always been watches. I truly enjoy being able to educate clients every day about the finest Swiss watches available. What do you see trending in your area of expertise? The trend in watches is a bold look, with big numerals and rubber straps of various colors. Watches from established and trusted names such as Patek Philippe and IWC are highly collectible. Many models from the venerated house of Patek Phillipe are considered to be “money in a Swiss bank,” with customers waiting several years to own them. On the ladies’ front, Cartier has a high appeal with models like Ballon Bleu, Panther and Tank Francaise. What’s your most unforgettable moment at LaViano? There are so many—however, what I cherish the most is the enduring relationships I created with my clients over the years and the fact that they trust and value my knowledge and input when they choose their watches. The unique luxury watches we sell at LaViano are classic accessories that stand the test of time. When you’re not working, what do you do to relax? Reading about technology and spending time with my kids.
STORE MANAGER How long have you been working at LaViano Jewelers? Forty-one years. At the time, I was looking for a change, and Mr. Michael LaViano came to where I worked as a welder, and offered me a job. I started as part time to see if I would like it, and 41 years later, I am still here. What’s your most unforgettable moment at LaViano? My most unforgettable moment was when the company threw me a party to celebrate my 40th year, and they surprised me with a Chevy Equinox! When you’re not working, what do you do to relax? I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, riding my motorcycle, antiquing or spending time on the weekends relaxing at the lake with my RV. When I’m not relaxing, I enjoy being a handyman for others as well as myself.
