SHAKEN, STIRRED AND STYLED Celebrate the season with an unforgettably chic martini soirée.

As end-of-the-year holidays approach, the moment calls for celebration— with style, sophistication and just the right pour. Thus it may be time for a martini party. Equal parts elegance and indulgence, it’s the perfect way to gather a well-dressed crowd, shake up tradition and raise a glass to the year that was. From crisp, minimalist glassware to top-shelf spirits and fashionforward flair, the modern martini soirée is less about formality and more about effortless glamour. Chef and entertaining guru Stephanie Nass, for instance, used the idea to turn a get-together at Manhattan’s Salmagundi Club into an extraordinary occasion. “I wanted to create a celebration of this festive cocktail,” she says in her newest book, Swing By! Entertaining Recipes and the New Art of Gathering (Rizzoli New York, 2024). “My inspiration was the sexy, late-night vibe of the Nines, an old-school piano bar lounge in downtown Manhattan.” Explore the following pages to see images from Nass’s festivities and pick up a notion or two for a martini party of your own.

For a recent bash at the Salmagundi Club, she hired a pianist to play and sing through the evening. PRETZEL CIGARETTES

Serves 8 “In a nod to a former time when cigarettes accompanied martinis, I wanted to create the closest thing: a trompe l’oeil cigarette made with pantry ingredients,” says Nass. “Guests appreciated the humor and, ultimately, the toothsome confection.” INGREDIENTS n 4 Oreo cookies, white filling discarded and cookies blitzed in a food processor until dusty n 1 Tbs. sugar n 16 (4-inch-long) pretzel rods n 1 (12 oz.) bag white chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS Line a baking sheet with parchment or waxpaper. Mix the Oreo dust with the granulated sugar in a small bowl. This will be used for the “ashes.” Put the chocolate chips in a tall microwave-safe drinking glass and melt in 30-second increments on normal power, stirring well after each increment, until fully melted. Dip the rod into the melted chocolate three quarters of the way up the

48

pretzel. Shake off any excess chocolate so that the chocolate generally maintains the shape of the pretzel. Dip the tip of the chocolate-coated pretzel into the “ashes.” Lay each coated pretzel on the prepared baking sheet and allow to cool. Once cool, arrange the rods on a serving platter or in a jar. If you like, put any remaining Oreo “ashes” in a small dish to be the “ashtray” and place beside the “cigarettes.”

GARMANY HOLIDAY 2025

GAR.hol25.Martini Party.indd 48

10/31/25 10:01 AM

A martini-party menu should cover drinks, sweets and savories. Creative snacks that complement the cocktails are a must—and so is one practical point. “When people are standing, they cannot cut with fork and knife—food must be bite-size,” Nass writes. Here, melted white chocolate turns ordinary pretzel rods, a familiar bar snack, into exquisite “cigarettes.” Remember to set up places to sit so that guests can set down drinks and eat light bites, including hors d’oeuvres and dishes such as cacio e pepe (see next page). “But scatter seating in small groups to prevent stagnancy,” she says.

CACIO E PEPE Serves 8 “I love dishes that are theatrical and incorporate their preparation into how they are presented,” says Nass. “Preparing this pasta dish in a giant wheel of cheese in front of guests is a wow. You can source the wheel online, from a food distributor, or (with enough advance notice) potentially from your local grocer. After the event, you can grate and freeze the cheese for future use.” INGREDIENTS n 60-lbs. wheel Pecorino Romano, hollowed out at the top to form a bowl shape (approximately 2 to 4 inches deep; use pieces removed to grate) n 3 lbs. spaghetti, cooked until almost al dente and tossed in olive oil n salt n 2 cups Pecorino Romano, freshly grated n black pepper DIRECTIONS Move your cheese wheel so it is beside your pasta pot and visible to guests. In a pot of boiling salted water, reheat individual servings of cooked pasta for 1 to 2 minutes. As the pot boils down and water run slower, you can add additional water (and salt). Using tongs, transfer the reheated pasta to the well of the cheese wheel. Add ½ cup pastawater and a sprinkle of the grated cheese. Toss the pasta around the well until it is coated with a slippery cheese sauce. Transfer the pasta to a plate and freshly crack black pepper over the top. Serve immediately. Continue this process until all guests are served.

HOMEMADE ESPRESSO MARTINI Serves 16 “Bartenders are generally well equipped to makeperfect, artisanal espresso martinis with fresh foam,” says Nass. “At a party, when you want to pre-batch and prepare as much as possible in advance, it’s a different story. Use cold brew concentrate if you are batching this or freshly pulled espresso if youare making everything à la minute.” INGREDIENTS n 2 cups plus 2 Tbs. vodka or coffee-infused vodka n 1 cup plus 2 Tbs. fresh espresso or cold brew concentrate n 1 cup coffee liqueur n ½ cup plus 2 Tbs. EVERY DETAIL COUNTS

Marshall Watson’s interiors prove that making a home beautiful begins with its “bones.”

Many creators find their passion at a very early age. Mozart started composing music when he was five years old, the same age Monet began drawing. Other artists, however, learn later—and some never stop. Although Marshall Watson studied design at Stanford University and set design at Brandeis University, he also earned a master’s in acting at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater and appeared for a time as a performer on the daytime TV soap opera As the World Turns. He didn’t fully embrace his calling as an interior designer until a stint at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. Still, perhaps no step on his apparently circuitous path was wasted. That would seem to be his pattern, anyway. “In my studio, we leave no element, no matter how seemingly inconsequential, uncovered,” Watson says in his newest book, Marshall Watson: Defining Elegance (Rizzoli, $58), which he penned with Marc Kristal. “Nothing is ever left to chance—every detail is an acorn holding the seed of an idea.” For the now 60-something Watson, a home’s bones are the ultimate details. In redoing a Greenwich, Connecticut, home on Long Island Sound, the designer used the structure’s architecture instead of working around or over it. He combined vintage furnishings and decorative flourishes with the already strong silhouette of the house. The result is a home that will “live, work and look better.” When designing a waterside Greenwich, Connecticut, home, New York-based designer Marshall Watson sought to craft multiple spaces for multiple moments to be enjoyed in multiple ways. “A case in point: a table off the bar that’s ideal for coffee, cocktails or conversation,” he says.

This page: A Julie Mehretu canvas hangs above the customdesigned living-room sofa, while plaster lamps resembling lighthouses and Italian leather stools shaped like coiled rope pay homage to the waterside locale. Opposite: Rattan chairs, originally designed by Billy Baldwin in the 1960s, highlight the décor in the kitchen. Watson’s studio created the trestle table, cabinets and all of the architectural detail.

RED WINE POACHED PEARS INGREDIENTS n 2 large oranges, navel or cara cara preferred for sweetness n 6 small pears, ripe but firm n 2 cups red wine, such as Pinot Noir n ¼ cup honey n 3 Tbs. raw sugar, or granulated sugar n 1 cinnamon stick n ¼ tsp. ground cardamom

Serves 6

DIRECTIONS Zest and juice one of the oranges and pour the juice in a medium bowl. Slice the remaining orange into ¼-inch rounds. With a vegetable peeler, peel the pears, leaving them whole. Add the pears to the bowl with the orange juice and toss to coat. (This will help prevent the pear from turning brown too quickly.) Prepare a non-reactive pot (such as an enameled pot) that can fit all the pears snuggly. Add the orange slices, red wine, honey, sugar, cinnamon stick and cardamom. Over medium-high heat, bring the liquid to a rolling boil, then lower the heat and add in the pears and orange juice (set the bowl aside). Cover and let simmer gently for 20 to 30 minutes, occasionally rotating them using a wooden spoon, until the pears have softened enough and a skewer inserted in the middle of a pear at the thickest part meets no resistance. Transfer the pears back to the bowl for now. Simmer the remaining liquid for a few minutes or until thickened. Allow the pears to sit upright in the poaching liquid until they have cooled enough to serve. Serve poached pears warm or cold with a little bit of the syrup drizzled on top and orange zest for garnish. You can also refrigerate them in the poaching liquid overnight to serve at a later time.

STRAWBERRY & BLUBERRY COBBLER INGREDIENTS For the fruit filling: n 2 cups blueberries n 2 cups chopped strawberries n ½ cup granulated sugar n 1 Tbs. lemon juice n 2 Tbs. all-purpose flour For the cobbler topping: n ½ cup unsalted butter, cubed n 1½ cups all-purpose flour n 3 Tbs. granulated sugar n ¼ tsp. cinnamon n pinch salt n 2 Tbs. baking powder n 1 egg, lightly beaten n ½ cup milk (or buttermilk)

Serves 10

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with non-stick spray and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, add the berries along with the sugar, lemon juice and flour. Stir together until the berries are coated in the sugar and flour. Pour berries into baking dish and set aside. In another mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder, sugar, cinnamon and salt and stir together. Add the cubed butter and use your hands or a pastry blender to blend the butter in with the flour mixture until crumbly. Then beat in the egg and milk until combined (batter will be thick). Drop the batter in big spoonfuls on top of the berries, leaving the edge exposed. Use a knife to spread the tops of each spoonful into a more even layer. Bake for approximately 40 minutes or until the berries are bubbling and the cobbler is golden brown (you can insert toothpick in the cobbler topping to also ensure doneness). Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top.
