Join us for a cup of coffee... and a second opinion When the markets turn as volatile and confusing as they have over the last several years, even the most patient investors may come to question the wisdom of the investment plan they’ve been following.

We’d like to help – starting with a cup of coffee and a second opinion. By appointment, you’re welcome to come in and sit with us for a while. We’ll ask you to outline your financial goals — what your investment portfolio is intended to do for you. Then we’ll review the portfolio for and with you. If we think your investments continue to be well-suited to your long-term goals, we’ll gladly tell you so. If, on the other hand, we think some of your investments no longer fit with your goals, we’ll explain why, in plain English. And, if you like, we’ll recommend some alternatives.

Either way, the coffee is on us! For a free consultation, please contact my office at 201-505-0472 and let us know if you like milk or cream, or you want us to bring the coffee to you. Eric L. mother (nature) knows best

It’s ironic. Much of what we write about is “interior” design—its very name declares that we have shut the door on the elements in order to turn our aesthetic attention to the nesting that is taking place within. But when it’s time to feather our nests, many of us call on Mother Nature for inspiration. Turn, for example, to “Inside Out” on page 88. There we show how a top-floor urban apartment takes on the feel of an outdoor garden so lush that it’s reminiscent of the owner’s homeland of Venezuela. Designer Arlene Angard’s inspiration? The 40th floor terrace filled with trees, shrubs and flowers. Just as bees are attracted to the bright hues and

showy petals of flowers, so are we. Our Trend Report on page 34 exhibits the power of petals. We’re not talking about your garden-variety buds—we give you the best picks for floral-themed furnishings and accessories. And we’d be remiss to feature flowers without illustrating the beauty of butterflies. Flip to page 32 where you’ll find timeless as well as trendy decor showcasing the butterfly motif. Designer Lee Melahn incorporated outdoor elements to bring light to the interior of a Warren home. In addition to using bright woods and tiles, he replaced an old Tuscan-style fireplace with a floor-toceiling surround made of rusticated stone—the same material used on the home’s exterior. See the results in “Turning on the Light” on page 52. Our ode to the outdoors continues with a notso-run-of-the-mill beach house. The space-by-thesea in “A Nod to Mod” on page 70 isn’t the typical oceanfront property with bright blues and seashells on the walls. Instead, this contemporary home uses clean lines, a cool palette and no-nonsense furnishings for a simple yet stylish look. While the outdoors provides inevitable inspiration even when the windows are shuttered, it becomes something more for a few months every year: a huge potential living room. In our Concept Board on page 40, we deconstruct an outdoor living space into its various pieces so that you can choose from among the options available to “build” the perfect patio. Even in a region with millions of people, it’s possible to find serenity and enjoy some muchneeded (and well-deserved) R&R—right in our own backyard. As we become increasingly technologically driven, we need the solace of the great outdoors all the more. How nice that design continues to find new ways to take us there—even when we’re inside.

DYNAMIC DUOS Household names on their own, these brands are collaborating for bigger and better things. Move over, Batman and Robin—here are the new famous pairs: Lilly Pulitzer and Pottery Barn Two familiar brands we both know and love, Lilly Pulitzer and Pottery Barn, are teaming up to launch a bright and exuberant line of home décor. Along with its classic tropical designs, the legendary clothier created a special print, “Home Slice,” specifically for this collection. Here’s the best news: These island-worthy pieces (good for the bedroom, nursery, lounge, outdoor space and more) are available from all three of the store’s outlets— Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and PBteen—so the whole family can find a new pillow, pouf or chair they love. Anthropologie and Nordstrom Wouldn’t it be great if you could find Anthropologie’s fabulous interior design collection at an easy-to-access luxury department store? Wish granted. For the first time in its 25-year history, the Philadelphia-based retailer’s home décor items will be available outside of its own stores, specifically at select Nordstrom full-line locations and its website. Anthropologie also launched its firstever outdoor line, which features everything from wood-carved daybeds to jewel-toned hammocks and throw pillows. Plus, all of the water- and UV-resistant offerings are built to withstand unpredictable weather, making them perfect for the Northeast. Miles Redd and Ballard Designs Celebrated designer Miles Redd is taking his unique style outside this season, with a collection of outdoor furniture for Ballard Designs. Redd was inspired by “the palette of nature,” which he’s described as “blue skies, white clouds and green trees.” He integrated the colors into this line’s various pieces, as well as nature-themed prints. If you’re itching for a few indoor pieces, have no fear—he’s working with Ballard Designs on a cozy Winter 2018 collection as well.

WHAT’S UP, WHAT’S NEW AND WHAT TO DO.

CHECK THESE OUT

If you’re looking for inspiration or just need a day to unwind, take a quick trip across the Hudson and treat your senses to the visual pleasures of these exhibits. Both run through summer—but trust us, you don’t want to wait to see them. Downton Abbey: The Exhibition Based on the beloved television series, “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition” is a mustsee for lovers of post-Edwardian fashion and design. The popular attraction’s stay in New York City (218 W. 57th St., Manhattan, downton exhibition.com) has been extended until Sept. 3, so take a day (or two or three) to explore antique furniture, period fashion pieces and the original sets used on the show. Georgia O’Keeffe: Visions of Hawai’i You don’t have to travel to Hawaii this summer to bask in its tropical beauty—a quick trip to the Bronx will suffice. The New York Botanical Gardens (2900 Southern Blvd., Bronx, nybg.org) recently opened its “Visions of Hawai’i” exhibit, which runs through Oct. 28. The two-part show features painter Georgia O’Keeffe’s scarcely seen depictions of the Hawaiian islands (exhibit in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library Art Gallery) and native tropical plants (in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory).

A LOT ON YOUR PLATE

GALLERY

It’s not unusual to see colorful plants and animals depicted on dinnerware, but French company Au Bain Marie guarantees each plate in its new Rousseau collection is one of a kind. How do they do it? Every ceramic dish (as well as teacups and saucers) features chic illustrations of birds, butterflies, flowers and vegetables surrounded by hand-painted edges. The playful drawings are inspired by the work of 19th-century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, who previously helped the ceramic earthenware maker earn an exhibit at the d’Orsay and Victoria Albert museums. Now, you can have museum-quality goods in your kitchen.

WALL TO WALL

The Point Two Design Group is putting fun and inventive wallpaper on the map—literally! Their team of designers creates wallpaper based on popular cities around the world like Sydney, Amsterdam and New York, to name a few. (See the collection at pointtwomaps.com.) But for New Jerseyans who don’t see our hometowns listed, have no fear! Point Two now offers custom wallpaper for any city in the world, so you can show everyone how much you love where you live. There are removable and permanent versions: one with a “peel and stick” backing and the other made from vinyl that needs to be glued. If you still want to show your hometown pride but on a smaller scale, you can order a map print, then frame it and hang it on your wall.

COVE HAS YOU COVERED

For more than 70 years, Sub-Zero and Wolf have been outfitting the best commercial and residential cooking spaces with state-of-the-art built-in and countertop appliances, taking the lead as the Cadillac of kitchen technology. Now, the Sub-Zero Group has outdone itself (again) and rolled out Cove, its new and innovative collection of luxury dishwashers. Introduced to consumers this spring, Cove products are made of premium-grade materials and are fully customizable inside and out. And as for their functionality, the machines are designed to focus on cleanliness, loading flexibility, drying quality and reduced noise.

22

Closed sales in June 2017, up 9.3 percent over the previous year, according to NJ Realtors.

There’s no better way to appreciate the great outdoors than relishing the beauty of trees. In The Songs of Trees (Viking, $20), award-winning author David Haskell documents the stories behind a number of individual trees ranging in location from Manhattan to the Amazon rainforest, as a way to further connect himself and his readers to nature. Haskell, whose novel The Forest Unseen was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, is a professor of biology and environmental studies at the University of the South. If you’re looking for more about nature, pick up The Xerces Society’s 100 Plants to Feed the Bees (Storey Publishing, $20). Bee populations are dwindling at an alarming rate due to a lack of hospitable environments where they can feed and pollinate. In its book, the Oregon-based wildlife conservation society offers plenty of useful tips on how you can support the pollinators in your area by planting flowers that will attract and provide nourishment for them. The bonus? Your garden will look beautiful too! And speaking of gardens, Gardens of Style: Private Hideaways of the Design World (Rizzoli, $55) features the manicured grounds of 15 top fashion and design tastemakers. Author Janelle McCulloch takes readers on an exclusive tour of the private gardens of Christian Dior, Bunny Williams, Nicole de Vésian and more, and illustrates how these designers draw inspiration from their backyard sanctuaries.

UPCOMING EVENTS

July 22–Sept. 3 Each year, the Hamptons Designer Showhouse enlists a contracting company to build a brand new home, and a handful of talented interior designers to decorate the blank slate. The designers beautify everything from the master bathroom to the front porch. This year’s showhouse is located in Bridgehampton, N.Y., and was provided by Barsalin Building & Design. Daily tours run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and cost $40 at the door. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Southampton Hospital. For tickets and more information, visit hamptondesignershowhouse.com. June 27 Seeking inspiration for your own garden? The Garden Club of Spring Lake may be able to help. The group is hosting a garden tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where attendees will take guided visits of private estates around town. After the tour, visitors can enjoy homemade refreshments and will receive lunch coupons redeemable at Spring Lake eateries. Tickets are $30 when purchased in advance at gardenclubofspringlake.org.

WHITEN UP Known for its black-and-white check patterns and floral accents, MacKenzie-Childs is going au naturel this season with a new collection called “Sweetbriar.” The brand’s classic details still adorn its teacups, plates and bowls, but are all white and made to mix-and-match with pieces from its existing collections. Sweetbriar’s pieces also include mouth-blown glassware, with hand-painted white flowers and gilded gold and platinum detailing.

A designer banishes the darkness from a 1980s home in Warren to create a space that’s bright, clean and altogether livable.

To make the kitchen a true gathering place, the designer installed two islands, the smaller for casual dining and the larger for prep (and company while prepping). Neutral shades of beige, white and pale gray predominate in the porcelain-tile backsplash, the Silestone quartz countertops and the white-glazed oak cabinetry. Ceiling beams were added for visual interest. Because the homeowners were serious about cooking, the design included two sinks and two stovetops.

Above, because the formal dining room is enclosed, it might have appeared dark were it not for the soft glow of the ceiling that derives from metallic wallpaper by Kravet. The natural walnut dining table from Altura gives off a soft sheen as well. Opposite, in the breakfast nook, both chairs and table (with built-in lazy susan) are from Crate & Barrel. The designer is known for its deft mixing of high- and low-end.

the darkness, he opened up the kitchen to the great room, gutted all the bathrooms and replaced every bit of flooring and all three fireplaces (adding a fourth). One of the major challenges was lightening up a house that, in spite of its large windows, didn’t get much in the way of natural light. Dark wood flooring was replaced with bleached wood planks throughout most of the house, and for the kitchen floor, Melahn chose a beige porcelain tile. He installed new stone floors in the foyer, eliminating a large central medallion, to give the entryway a sleeker, brighter look. The palette overall is light and neutral, incorporating shades of beige, white and gray. In the kitchen, white quartz countertops complement white-glazed white oak cabinets. To add airiness to the kitchen as a whole, upper cabinets were kept to a minimum, with

She liked the house; he didn’t. The couple agreed that the large property in Warren, with its lush plantings, its pool and its own small lake, was perfect. But for Jiayi Chen, perfection outside didn’t mitigate the house’s dark, overly ornate interior. Today though, he admits that his wife got it right. In terms of space, “it checked all the boxes,” Chen says. “It was just that the décor wasn’t there—but that was fixable.” And fix it they did, with a total interior renovation led by designer Lee Melahn of Pleasant Living, a design firm with offices in New York City and Madison, Wis. “What they wanted was something simple and clean,” he says, “though the place they chose was pretty much the antithesis of that: very traditional, lots of dark wood, with a Tuscan-style fireplace and over-the-top French Rococo vanities.” To banish

5/8/18 3:23 PM

56

| GALLERY

To emphasize the height of the greatroom’s ceiling, the designer created a floor-to-ceiling fireplace surround of gray stone and installed dramatic craftsman-style Ralph Lauren chandeliers from ABC Carpet and Home. Tables from the design firm’s own furniture line, Shaver/Melahn, flank the fireplace, and a custom console surrounds a white sofa from Donghia Furniture. Gunmetal Dupioni silk drapery from Kravet softens the oversize windows.

This page, dark wood adds a restful note to the master bedroom, complemented by soft grays in the silk draperies from Kravet, the pale gray area rug and Crate & Barrel’s Marlowe chaise. Chromogenic prints by Lynn Geesaman add a jolt of color above the bed, and an inset gas fireplace contributes to the sense of cozy enclosure in the windowed nook. Opposite, top, in the foyer, a cerused oak table from the designers’ furniture collection is illuminated by a contemporary light fixture by Moooi. Bottom, the nursery feels playful thanks to a wallpaper mural from Anthropologie and an area rug created from Flor carpet tiles in two shades of gray.

| 59

GAL.su18.shaver/melahn2.indd 59

While good design was essential to the homeowners, they also wanted a house that functioned well for themselves and their daughter, now 4 years old but a baby when the renovation was completed. (She’s since been joined by a brother, 18 months.) The console that surrounds the great-room sofa was designed for overflow seating; guests can pull in chairs from the two kitchen islands to snack, chat or watch the big-screen TV mounted on the fireplace surround. Function was particularly important in the nursery, which was designed to grow with the homeowners’ daughter. A whimsical wallpaper mural and a checkerboard rug add charm, but the designer steered clear of an overall theme (no princesses here). “It’s obviously a kid’s room,” he says, “but it’s a room that their daughter can grow into.” The coffee table, a

extra storage provided by two islands. And in the dining room, which has only a single exposure, Melahn added reflectivity by covering the ceiling with metallic wallpaper that offers a subtle sheen. “We wanted to give that room a little bit more elegance,” he says, “to separate it from more utilitarian spaces, like the breakfast area in the kitchen.” The house reflects the designer’s penchant for mixing high-end furnishings with less expensive pieces. In the great room, a custom console surrounds a sectional sofa from Donghia, while nearby two armchairs from West Elm flank an occasional table purchased at Global Views for $150. “One of our philosophies,” says Melahn, “is that design doesn’t have to be expensive—there’s good design in a lot of places.”

convenience for the parents when their daughter was an infant, now works as a play surface. And the rug is actually composed of interlocking carpet tiles, so a stain on any one of the squares won’t necessitate tossing out the entire thing. Just because the design emphasizes function and employs clean lines doesn’t mean it lacks drama— something that’s particularly evident in the great room. To make the most of its soaring ceilings, Melahn replaced the old Tuscan-style fireplace with a floor-to-ceiling surround of rusticated stone, designed to match the stone on the house’s exterior. (The warmth derives from a simple rectilinear gas fireplace near floor level.) And two massive circular chandeliers direct the eye upward, echoing the circles built into the custom sofa console.

GAL.su18.shaver/melahn2.indd 60

The master bedroom goes beyond serene to spectacular thanks to a new gas fireplace, installed in the old room divider, and a divan beneath a large bank of windows. “The homeowners wanted a place where they could just relax,” says Melahn. “It’s like a room within a room.” For sheer visual excitement, though, nothing beats the master bathroom, with book-matched marble on virtually every surface, including the large soaker tub. The room has built-in privacy via an outside screen of greenery, but Melahn installed dramatic drapery for an added touch of luxe. “We had a lot of fun with the room, and the homeowners were more than willing to just go with it,” he says. That sense of fun and over-the-top elegance adds a different kind of sparkle to a house newly infused with light.

The designer gutted the old master bathroom and installed book-matched marble on the floors and the soaker tub. The bright cabinets are made of bleached wood with a gray wash and feature inset pulls instead of knobs. They’re topped with a Silestone quartz countertop.

working with the builder more than a decade ago. Of the redesign, Diana says, “We just love everything!” First, Goorha considered the homeowners’ lifestyle. The Longos may be empty nesters but they’re not retired (they still run a sales-related business); Diana owns and rides a horse, and they are very active with family. True, their three children are grown, but now they have seven grandkids and No. 8 is on the way. With so many tiny feet running around, their furnishings had to work hard. “It’s not a caution-tape, do-not-enter kind of house,” says Goorha, who solved the problem with Crypton stain-resistant fabrics and new easier-to-clean gray taupe tile for the kitchen. Ron insisted that the former hardwood floors had no place in a kitchen (aka spill central). (Now bring on that bowl of spaghetti!) Once practicality was out of the way, Goorha dove into design. The home’s eclectic style and new color story is evident with the grand entrance foyer. Abstract

Allentown, N.J. homeowners Diana and Ron Longo needed a big change, but not what one would expect from empty nesters. They weren’t looking to downsize or move into a retirement village—so firmly are their feet grounded in their 6,000-square-foot colonial of 13 years. Yet to live happily ever after in this six-acre setting would take some shaking up—trapped with stale traditional décor, their five-bedroom home cried out for pizzazz. “Nothing about the previous design popped,” recalls Diana, describing dark furniture and heavy green drapery in the family room, as well as neutral tones dominating the home’s décor. What she really wanted, she says, was to open the crayon box and explore. Enter Swati Goorha, principal interior designer for her eponymous New Providence firm. “She did things I never thought of doing. It’s a nice mix,” says Diana. And this time around, Diana was not rushing through the decision-making as she did to some extent when

cobalt-blue chairs provided another burst of color at the breakfast room’s marble table—a fresh change from the maple-topped eating area and French country chairs. But Goorha goes much deeper in her design, adding another dimension with mixed finishes and bead work. “I would call it an eclectic look. We kept with the aesthetics of the house but updated everything.” The powder room was truly an example of expanding the color palette to liven up a tired façade, consisting of black floral wallpaper with cherry cabinets. “We have beautiful organic trellis-like wallpaper with bead detail,” she says. Topping it all off is a high-gloss green ceiling, and now: “What used to be a dark, dated powder room is fresh, fun with a pop of color.” Today, Diana’s in love with her house again: “You’re so happy when you’re here. It’s the colors, drapes, the openness. It’s more modern, but I wouldn’t say it’s modern. It flows nicely with everything.” The Longos liked the first-floor makeover so much they are now working with Goorha on the second story. “As long as we can stay here,” she says, “there’s no place else we’d rather be.”

This page, the designer stripped mullions from the windows in the family room, allowing the millwork on the walls to take center stage. Opposite page, gone is the cherry cabinetry that darkened this kitchen. The new look is light and bright.

floral art and an antique table mesh perfectly in an aesthetic that banishes boredom. “And blue makes you feel so happy from the moment you walk in!” she says. Moving on to the family room, Goorha especially likes how millwork infused the personality it lacked. “It was just plain, clean walls with no architectural interest,” Goorha says. For the millwork to take center stage meant stripping mullions off the plentiful windows—an arduous job no doubt, but worth the drama. Even the ceiling, once just plain white, came alive with millwork. “Beautiful, soft window treatment adds softness to the space and ties everything together,” she adds. What’s a makeover without fresh furniture? A new Crypton-fabric sectional—roomy enough for the entire family—is a cushy retreat for TV viewing before the fireplace. Now, the kitchen was always at the heart of the makeover list. Goorha woke it up with a cobalt bluebased island with statuary marble top and custom-iron barstools. “The entire kitchen was cherry—very dark and dated,” recalls Goorha, who lightened it up with white, gray-glazed cabinets. It’s an idyllic setting fit for a pair of princesses. And Karla Trincanello of Interior Decisions in Florham Park should know—she has twin grandkids herself. So when Trincanello set out to design this nursery, she knew the importance of it lasting beyond the baby stage. “I wanted it to easily transition and grow with the girls as they became toddlers, children, pre-teens, teens and older,” she explains. “It will continue to have that sophistication.” Right now, the room expands upon a fairy-tale theme to include angels and butterflies, but these elements—the framed pages from old storybooks on the walls and the antique cherub lamps on the fireplace mantel—are all easy to change out. As the girls mature, they can let their tastes decide the details. One of Trincanello’s favorite touches is the classic diamond pattern painted on the walls. The design was added after the walls were painted blue with a silver strié finish. (And surprise, cleanup is a breeze!) “Everything in this room is washable—the walls, the drapery, the fabric on the chairs and daybed,” says Trincanello. “Even the toss pillows were done in an indoor-outdoor fabric. It’s all washable, which is so important when you have children.” She’s also fond of the sheer Roman shades and their butterfly design, creating a whimsical effect with the custom swivel rockers in the window alcove. “They look like actual butterflies fluttering on the window,” says Trincanello. “They are so cheery. And I love how they allow the beautiful leaded glass windows to show.” Trincanello designed the nursery for the Mansion in May showhouse in Morris Township’s Alnwick Hall, a historic mansion that was built in 1904. Much of the home features dark wood, but “everyone who came through this room said it was so bright, and it made them feel happy,” remembers the designer, “which I was happy to hear.”

The project took Nathan and his team about eight months to complete, as they needed to gut the apartment and reconfigure parts of the existing floor plan to take maximum advantage of the space, as well as the beautiful views of the city. “I think the hardest part of the job was coordinating all the tradespeople. There had to be a very specific flow to the job, and I had to be very careful about how everything was designed,” says Nathan. One of Nathan’s first decisions was to create an open kitchen, which meant eliminating part of a wall, adding custom-built cabinetry and replacing the apartment’s wooden floors with Porcelanosa tiles

The designer found an ingenious solution for a structural column that could not be removed from the middle of the living room; he covered it in red grass-cloth and let it house a television and electronic fireplace.

When longtime clients of Wyckoff-based interior designer Ron Nathan offered him the opportunity to design their new pied-à-terre, an 1,800-square-foot one-bedroom on the 40th floor of a luxury building in Jersey City’s Exchange Place area, he didn’t have to think very hard before agreeing to the project. “The nicest people to work with are the people you have worked with before, because their confidence in you makes it easier to do your best,” says Nathan, who has teamed up with the senior couple on four previous occasions. “I love the fact that they’re always very collaborative but also have a real sense of what they want.”

Similarly, the living room is designed primarily for the couple’s use, with a black-and-white upholstered sofa and two swivel chairs by Swaim Furniture, all of which are positioned to take advantage of the apartment’s views. The room also gets a great deal of natural light, says Nathan, and remote-controlled window shades by CMI Interiors regulate how much sun is allowed into the apartment at any time. Perhaps the living room’s most unusual feature is a red grass-cloth-covered column by Phillip Jeffries that houses both a television set and an

Because they don’t plan to entertain often, the couple saw no need to incorporate a formal dining table. The island unit, covered in white lacquer with a white quartz countertop, is equipped with a wine refrigerator, icemaker, dishwasher and cooktop with a small oven underneath, while a large

apartment that has wall-to-wall carpeting, per the clients’ request. Meanwhile, the bathroom—which is separated from the bedroom by a pocket door—looks vastly different than it did before. “There was a bathtub where the custom-made vanity is now, but we decided to eliminate it and just enlarge the shower,” says Nathan. The walls are now completely tiled, as is the floor, and a large wooden mirror with built-in sconces is both useful and decorative. “I loved the fact that I was able not only to make a huge difference in the way the space looked, but I was also able to provide my clients with a comfortable place for them to spend time in,” says Nathan.

Having a variety of lighting options in the bedroom and bathroom was important to the homeowners, so Nathan installed everything from hanging lamps above the king-sized bed to a large mirror with sconces built into it.

electric fireplace. “It was a structural column, so we couldn’t take it down or replace it,” admits Nathan. “This is the first time my clients have allowed me to use red as an accent color; all my other work for them has been completely black and white.” Finally, a custom-shaped wool rug by Prestige Mills completes the sophisticated look. To make a restful night’s sleep, Nathan put a great deal of effort into creating a perfect master bedroom, which features a king-sized bed with an upholstered headboard, a custom-made dresser in charcoal anigre wood with stainless steel, a swivel chair, distinctive light fixtures by Sonneman throughout the room and a 70-inch television. It was always about the terrace. What drew Arlene Angard to the five-room apartment wasn’t the potential of its interiors or its urban location or city views; instead, she looked at the long expanse of outdoor space connected to it and envisioned a green oasis that could transport her to the lush gardens of her native Venezuela. And when, 17 years later, she and her husband embarked on a major renovation, it was the terrace, now green and full of life, that served as their muse. The idea that drove the project, says Angard—a former orthodontist and now a successful interior designer and gallerist, with her own line of furnishings—was “to bring the outdoors to the indoors, all that light and green and beauty that I developed on the terrace.” To that end, and with an eye toward enlarging the interior space, she and her husband bought an adjoining apartment, which allowed them sole access to the terrace—the only terrace, in fact, in the entire 40-story building. To make the most of garden views, the furnishings in the living/ dining room were kept light and low. The chest under the large piece of abstract art by Gabriela Tolomei is actually half of an old entertainment unit to which designer and homeowner Arlene Angard added doors, now upholstered in silver leather. The use of neutrals in most of the furnishings—including a tufted sofa upholstered in gray velvet from Kravet Fabrics and the Stark area rug in shades of gray and white— creates a kind of “infinity” look merging indoors and out.

the surrounding landscape.) Yet nothing about the apartment reads as “bland” or even “neutral.” In the living room, Angard incorporated the vibrant colors of South America into a set of chartreuse velvet chairs and a large, vividly hued abstract painting by the Argentine artist Gabriela Tolomei, whom Angard represents. In the barroom, the color is mostly on the floor, in the form of one of the designer’s own rugs in soft shades of peach, lilac and coral. And the punch in the master bedroom derives largely from eye-catching metallics on the bedcover and on the custom acoustic wall, constructed of squares of earth-toned velvet and bearing an original painting in acrylics, oils and layers of liquid gold by New York City artist Patrice Hoban. It’s not surprising, given Angard’s occupation as a gallerist, that art has a major presence throughout the apartment. The foyer is flanked by two large paintings that greet the occupants and their visitors with flashes of bright color, and three treeroot sculptures by Puerto Rican artist Alfonso Munoz, says Angard, “together tell a story of going into the forest.” There is

Above: The designer/ homeowner, a gallerist, made sure to include art in every room, such as the foyer, where visitors are greeted by two colorful paintings by American artist William Engel on the left and Venezuelan artist Julia Hermoso on the right. The gray Coraggio chair at the end of the foyer is upholstered in silk mohair. Right: The barroom features a number of pieces from the designer’s collection, among them the rug, “Sunset in Bermuda,” in sustainable alpaca and the two ottomans, covered in lilac velvet from Brunschwig & Fils. The bar is a custom-made cabinet built of Neopolitan wood, a composite of maple, cinnamon wood and recycled barn wood. The Masai mask on the glass side table is a memento of the owners’ travels to South Africa.

90

To make sure the architectural issues involved in breaking through a structural wall were handled correctly, the couple hired the firm that had designed the building some three decades earlier. Then, Angard took over, creating an apartment infused with light and color and a sense of the green outdoors. Panoramic windows offer an unobstructed view of the outdoor space (which Angard calls “our baby,” given the love and attention she and her husband have lavished on it over the years), and two French doors—one in the living/dining room and one in the master bedroom—provide access. Angard deliberately kept furniture from competing with the view, which is visible from five of the apartment’s six main rooms and one of the bathrooms. In the living/dining room and master bedroom, for instance, she installed simple white under-window storage. And she upholstered the living-room sofa, which sits in front of a bank of large windows, in pale gray velvet to allow the leafy terrace behind it to pop. (Angard refers to that aspect of the design as an “infinity” look, referencing the edgeless pools that effectively fade into

the mudroom to an alpaca rug in the barroom. Providing comfort was a crucial concern for Angard. In fact, she says, she always considers the “four Cs”—chic, classic, comfortable and colorful—in her design work. The media room is a perfect example of all four, with its antique George V chairs, reupholstered in pure silk; its sustainable sisal rug atop graystained maple-plank flooring (installed throughout the apartment); an inviting leather sofa; and a large painting by American artist Jerry Teter. Rather than position another sofa in front of the windows, Angard chose a chaise, both for its comfort and its low silhouette, which allows a direct sightline out to the garden. With its invitation to lounge and take in the terrace, it’s the perfect piece for a space dedicated to blurring the edge between inside and out.

functional artwork like the free-form side table in the living room by Minnesotan artist Freddy Borges, while Masai masks from the couple’s trips to Africa adorn tables in the bar and media rooms. Also in the living room, rustic cylindrical wheels, employed on farms in the 19th century and bearing the scars from hard use in the fields, serve both as end tables and intriguing found art. The renovation also was guided by the principles of universal design, an approach elevating accessibility for all, including the elderly and people with disabilities. The French doors are 36 inches wide to make the terrace wheelchair-accessible; all window treatments are motorized; and the dining table is flanked, not by chairs, but by benches, which can be easily pushed under the table to increase flow in the living/dining area. Angard used sustainable materials wherever possible, from lava tile floors in

A BOONTON DESIGNER CREATES ENTERTAINMENT CENTRAL BY FILLING THE NOOKS AND CRANNIES OF A SPACIOUS BASEMENT. Design by Katja van der Loo

THE DESIGN ANALYSIS: Designer Katja van der Loo of Papyrus Home Design in Boonton was called in to assess the space. “The basement had a few of what I like to call ‘architectural uglies,’ or facets of a room that can’t be removed, but are instead worked around,” says van der Loo. In this space, it was its two “bump-outs,” alcoves in the walls that break the overall symmetry. “Because the main bump-out was of such a specific shape, we had to make a piece that would fit—down to the

millimeter,” explains the designer. “My team crafted a bookcase where the homeowner could display artwork and other items.” The bookcase wasn’t the only custom-made piece needed for the space; her next challenge presented itself when considering seating options, since getting an entire sofa into the basement would be a tight squeeze. Van der Loo had a custom sectional built and upholstered, which was brought down in three separate pieces. “The homeowner wanted each part of the room to serve a unique purpose like a lounge or lobby does,” says van der Loo. “They host parties in the space, and guests can sit in the club chairs to catch up and talk, watch television on the sectional or enjoy a drink at the high-top table.”

Here’s a bright idea: Ditch your run-of-the-mill landscape lights for something with more character. With help from a few well-placed NightOrbs, your garden path can be transformed into an enchanted walkway. The hand-blown glass fixtures are the brainchild of designer Thomas Rupnicki, whose otherworldly designs resemble celestial bodies like Mercury, Venus and Mars’ largest moon, Phobos.
