dreaming of reinvention

ne rainy day this past weekend, I spent hours poring through design magazines and online sites culling ideas for fabulous future rooms. It’s true that I’m not in the market for a renovation but that detail doesn’t stop me from mentally installing a stylish banquette in a breakfast room or hanging textured wallpaper in a guest suite. Of course, I’m well aware that I don’t possess the spatial talents needed to oversee a project from studs to completion, but isn’t that why we turn to professional architects and designers to whom we entrust our dream rooms? When you find a pro who shares your vision, one who “gets” you, it’s magic as so many of the homes in this issue prove.

A good collaboration between designer and homeowner not only streamlines the process, it ensures that someone smarter than you (in this area anyway) will work out the design kinks before you make them and that the result will be a home you’ll enjoy for many years to come. Such was the case for Ramsey-based interior designer Diane Durocher and a Bergen County family, which hired the decorating pro before construction on their dream home even began. The homeowners were committed to a gray color scheme throughout the house— Durocher followed their wish but added plenty of texture in each room to make the neutral hue pop. See “50 Shades of Gray” on page 52 for the entire project. The Rosanos of Franklin Lakes also had a vision for their bathroom renovation, and they teamed with Aparna Vijayan of Ridgewood’s Ulrich Inc. to keep the charm of the nearly 300-square-foot area. The designer opened the space, refreshing outdated pieces and making the room seem even bigger without losing its character. Read about this makeover in “A Bathing Beauty” beginning on page 70. Then there’s Linda Klein of Summit’s Kitchen Expressions, who worked side by side with a Bedminster couple to create a new space that incorporates some of the pastoral elements found on the property. The result is a rustic/contemporary kitchen that can be seen in “Reclaim Your Space” starting on page 90. It’s always satisfying to generate your own ideas. But when it comes to designing a home—or a magazine, for that matter— collaboration with others is key and hopefully ensures an end result that everyone will love!

If you’ve ever wished you could see Michelangelo’s breathtaking frescoes that adorn the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome up close, you’re in luck. OUR LATEST OBSESSION: BAR CABINETS Masquerading as a piece of furniture, the bar cabinet is a chic yet discreet way to organize spirits and glassware while keeping them close at hand. From low, credenzalike shapes to tall pieces that look more like armoires, bar cabinets have many forms. Helpful features to look for: adjustable shelves for fitting bottles of various heights, racks for glassware, built-in bottle holders and extra drawers. If the top isn’t low enough to provide a work surface, make sure the cabinet has a pull-out shelf for mixing drinks. When the period between 1950 and 1980 brought everything from military conflict to social and political upheaval, artists responded by producing equally disorienting art. “Delirious: Art at the Limits of Reason, 1950–1980,” an exhibition at the Met Breuer in New York City, shows how 62 artists approached this era. The works are arranged in four sections—Vertigo, Excess, Nonsense and Twisted—and include Philip Guston’s cartoonlike paintings of garbage piles and Ana Mendieta’s 1972 self-portrait in which she presses her face against a plate of glass. It’s art at its absurd best, and it runs through Jan. 14, 2018.

WINTER WONDERLANDS Those with green thumbs shouldn’t fret. Though your gorgeous summer garden has faded, a visit to a winter garden or indoor greenhouse can keep you inspired. The New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands in Ringwood has a winter garden that features golds, blues and reds among the many evergreens. On the west side of the garden is New Jersey’s largest Jeffrey pine, and nearby there’s a Japanese umbrella pine that was planted sometime between 1891 and 1920. For a warmer, indoor experience, head to Duke Farms in Hillsborough to check out the Orchid Range greenhouse. A tropical display is filled with a wide variety of orchid species from tropical regions, along with orchids cultivated at Duke Farms throughout its history. A subtropical display is filled with orchids that evolved in cooler locations and highlights naturally occurring species. With more than 20,000 square feet of greenhouses, Stony Hill Gardens in Chester is also worth a visit. Fall brings thousands of chrysanthemums, plus ornamental cabbage and kale, and in winter you’ll find hundreds of poinsettias in traditional colors plus new patterns. The year-round collection of indoor plants includes orchids, ferns, cyclamen, Christmas cactus, ivy and tropical house plants.

n Acclaimed Atlanta interior designer Beth Webb has just released her first book, which explores how design can elevate the everyday by evoking the five senses. layouts plus the lighting and furniture plans; she also designed the architectural details, including builtins and coffered ceilings. Her overall task: giving the homeowners a “new but traditional” look befitting their 10,000-square-foot, shingle-style home. But perhaps her biggest challenge was sticking to a consistent color palette throughout the entire house—the family wanted a neutral shade in the gray family—but still offering interest and depth. To the rescue: plenty of texture. “Whether it’s trim on a window treatment, a painted striae finish on the walls or a French-pattern limestone in the entry foyer, it’s nice to be able to mix it up just a bit with some texture,” Durocher says. The kitchen, designed by Wyckoff-based Peter Salerno, is perfect for large family get-togethers, with two islands, two sinks, two dishwashers, warming drawers, a rotisserie and a built-in chopping block. “The family loves to cook, and the kitchen has every bell and whistle,” says Durocher. “The La Cornue stove is the focal point. It features a custom hood fabri-

cated from reclaimed tin ceiling tiles.” The same tiles are used on inset panels on the side-by-side refrigerator and freezer, adding even more interest and texture. An adjacent great room features gray chenille sofas that contrast nicely with white walls. A contemporary wool and silk rug unifies the seating area, which is focused on the built-ins that house the television, fireplace and cabinetry. Additional seating for the large family was created with comfortable chairs and ottomans. Durocher added a nickel-finished chandelier to draw the eye upward. “It’s nice to have focal points that aren’t architectural details,” she says. The project, which also included the talents of architect Bob Zampolin and builder George Kevo, took four years to complete. “It was a long process but a great process because we learn how our clients live and what their expectations were for their home—and it was a privilege to assist them with that,” says Durocher. “Our job is to ensure that our clients are going to be thrilled at the end of the process, and I think they were very much so.”

Gray striated glazed walls create contrast against the white trim, drapery panels and chairs in the dining room. The chairs look like satin but are actually easy-to-clean vinyl. “The material is stunning but also durable,” says Durocher. The custom coffered ceiling highlights the beautiful chandelier from Circa Lighting.

painting was in place it looked as if the room had been built around it.” Just off the foyer is the powder room, which the designer describes as “a little jewel box.” Fitted with crystal-beaded wallcovering and a sculptural carved-glass vessel sink atop a large fluted base, it turned out to be one of the owners’ and designer’s favorite spaces, perfectly at home in an apartment where art is an essential. Not only were the clients’ pleased, the apartment’s design garnered a gold award from the New Jersey chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. More important, it’s an aesthetically fitting home for these passionate collectors, as much a work of art as the pieces for which it’s a showcase.

shade of ivory, echoed in the coffered ceiling created for the dining room and much of the apartment’s upholstery and window- and wallcoverings. The subdued palette also highlights the artwork, which tends to be color-saturated. Zonfrilli was familiar with the owners’ collection, which she kept in mind throughout the design process—though, in fact, the placement of the art was a collaboration between designer and clients that took place at the very end of the renovation and yielded a few surprises. The only space that could accommodate the owners’ largest painting, for instance, happened to be the wall at the end of the foyer, a particularly dramatic area of the apartment thanks to a tiled barrel ceiling that mirrors the inlaid pattern on the stone floor. And yet, Zonfrilli notes, “once the

fairly simple. New shaker-style cabinets from Signature Custom Cabinetry in off-white provide plenty of storage above and below the spacious Caesarstone Bianco Drift countertops. The same cabinets in a bleached walnut were used for the large island. “We made it a very homey island, with vegetable basket drawers and a Sharp microwave drawer,” says Klein, noting that the extensive surface area gives the homeowners, who are avid cooks, serious food prep and cooking space. (The stainless steel Wolf rangetop, oven and warming drawer also come in handy.) A custom metal rangehood with copper detailing and beveled tile backsplash also add to the contemporary look. The straight edges, glossy finish and groutless appearance of the tiles rarely would have been found in a rustic space, she adds. “I tell my clients to have 100 points of wow in their space,” Klein says. “And in part because of the reclaimed elements, I think we easily hit that number.”

It was the best of both worlds for designer Linda Klein of Summit-based Kitchen Expressions, who was hired to create a space for a Bedminster family in their newly constructed home. In addition to working with an entirely blank slate, Klein was given free rein to develop a concept that included outside-the-box ideas. “Most projects 20 years ago had to fit inside the box, but today we can step out,” she says. “There was an old barn on the property that the homeowners decided to keep, and they wanted a feeling of a luxury barn in the kitchen. So we came up with a design that blends rustic, modern and other styles. The idea let me take the homeowners to the edge of their comfort zone, but they loved it.” Klein used reclaimed wood for the floors as well as the double pantry doors to forge a rustic look. The door handles and decorative lighting are also older fixtures, she says, and serve to cement the feel of the room. And to make those elements stand out, Klein kept other design features

Interior designer Eric J. Schmidt says he used circular shapes—like the one on this E.F. Chapman ceiling light—to soften the room’s angles.

THIS SPACE NEEDED TO OFFER A HOST OF FEMININE CREATURE COMFORTS—PLUS DOUBLE AS A SPOT FOR EXTRA STORAGE.

THE DESIGN ANALYSIS: We placed a call to designer Eric J. Schmidt of North Caldwell-based Eric J. Schmidt Interiors, who had a very specific vision for the space: “Go bold” (or go home!). A “transitional” style was employed to keep the room, part of a 1926 home, from being too modern or too traditional. To that end, Schmidt started with a palette of black, white and hot pink, then added a geometric-patterned wallcovering. Meanwhile, a black and white deco floral fabric softens the windows, and the pink carpet and pillows give a dash of excitment à la Elsa Schiaparelli. (After all, “shocking pink” was the legendary Italian designer’s signature color.) To visually soften the angles and corners in such a small space, Schmidt employed the subtle use of circular Just relax—this Julia side chair by Mitchell Gold + Bob shapes, found in the wallcovering, armoire, custom radiator cover and Williams offers complete light fixtures. But how about all those functional must-haves? A day bed comfort plus simple style with its long center waterfall offers the perfect spot to read, snooze or watch TV (there’s a flat-screen skirt and petite pleats at the television above the glass-topped table, which is also the ideal place corners. to pull up a chair and check your laptop), while an antique wardrobe cabinet supplies that much-needed clothing storage.

Another E.F. Chapman offering, this table lamp continues Schmidt’s circular theme while adding a modern, Art Deco feel.

THE SPACE: Talk about a multi-purpose room: The homeowners wanted to transform this tiny 10.5x10-foot space into one that could serve as a ladies’ lounge area, complete with space to read, relax and watch TV—oh, and it also had to serve as a storage area for extra clothes. Above all, the edict was to make the room “fun and happy.”

The purpose of Gastón y Daniela’s Galliano wallcovering was two-fold: Schmidt says that in addition to supplying a “wow” factor, it visually expands the space. The Fleur de Deauville drapery by Ralph Lauren, meanwhile, softens the windows and adds a touch of drama.

The Lubi Daybed, available at CB2, offers the perfect spot for an afternoon siesta, as the stacked double mattress serves as a comfortable twin. At night, you can unfold the topper, put it on the floor and enjoy a restful slumber on a queen-sized bed.

The perfect place to park your laptop, Parsons’ glass and steel table boasts a refined, industrial aesthetic and hand-welded steel ground at every corner, making each piece unique.

The inspiration to use pink—seen in the room’s Lee Jofa pillows—came from designer Elsa Schiaparelli, whose signature color was “shocking pink.” The color is echoed in a rug by Kravet.

A Colette armoire isn’t just ideal for storing summer clothes as you make room for your winter-wear: With its curved bow fronts and saber legs in a dark espresso stain, this Blake Tovin of Tovin Design piece, available at Crate & Barrel, adds the elegance of a 1940sera design. (The antique Asian-inspired wardrobe is from 1st Dibs.)

Options abound: You can plant succulents, which require little water and thrive in shallow spaces, herbs, vines, even edibles like tomatoes and strawberries. Pros say the benefits of growing fruits, veggies and flowers on garden netting, in a tower of pots, on a trellis or over garden structures are numerous: Not only does it save space, but the thinking-out-of-the-box method also reduces chores like pest-control, weeding, watering and fertilizing. Verdant walls also offer an increased plant variety in much less space, a greater yield and, best of all, you wonâ€™t have to bend over when doing gardening chores. One last plus: Those flourishing flowers and plants can cover an unattractive wall, meaning your uber-original garden also doubles as a sly design remedy.
