ORIGINATOR OF CULTURED PEARLS TO LEGENDARY JEWELER

S

ince 1893, Mikimoto has celebrated the natural beauty, exceptional quality and timeless elegance that define the originator of the world’s finest cultured pearls. This year marks its 125th anniversary, a time to reflect and look to the future, ushering in a new chapter of the Mikimoto brand.

When founder Kokichi Mikimoto successfully created the world’s first cultured pearl, he continued to innovate and develop new techniques and designs, rivaling those of his European contemporaries.

At the 1937 International Exposition in Paris, he unveiled the Obidome Kimono Sash Clip. With exquisite detail and Art Deco style, adorned with Akoya cultured pearls and precious stones, it demonstrated a novel versatility. Its 12 interchangeable settings allowed the disassembling and reassembling of parts to form completely different pieces, including a brooch, rings and hair ornaments.

To celebrate 125 years, Mikimoto proudly revisits this classic, vintage design and introduces the Yaguruma collection, featuring a belt, bracelet and pendants.

Recently shown in Geneva, one of this season’s highlights is the Praise to Nature collection. Its exquisite craftsmanship is the embodiment of a song of praise to the glory of the natural world. Fantastic gemstones— diamond, emerald, pink and blue sapphire, and aquamarine—appear throughout the new collections, dancing in a festival of color.

Jewelry icon DAVID YURMAN talks inspiration, exploration and collaboration.

Theodore Roszak, Yurman designed a bronze necklace for Sybil that got picked up by a gallery and quickly sold out. This evolved into the Yurmans’ first business: selling their jewelry at arts and crafts fairs.

David and Sybil got married in 1979, and a year later relaunched the company as David Yurman. Year one, a good omen: an award from the World Gold Council for the Starlight

t all started with a book on prehistoric art that fascinated 11-year-old David Yurman. In high school, he learned welding from noted sculptor Ernesto Gonzales, then lived an artist’s life in California before moving back East to Greenwich Village.

In 1969, he met a beautiful young artist named Sybil (later to become his wife) while working for sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp. Then, apprenticing with highly esteemed sculptor

The company’s roots are based on the collaborative partnership between me and Sybil, along with our son Evan. We exchange ideas as well as artistic exploration. I’d like to think our success can be attributed to remaining true to our origins. When Sybil and I started the company, it was simply to make beautiful things to wear. The business was and is a vehicle for our creative expression.

You and Sybil are a rarity in the fashion world; what’s the secret to being both business partners and life partners?

What inspires your designs these days?

I think because we’re both artists and view life creatively, we have become soul mates. Ironically, we never set out to create a business. It sprang from the way we painted or did sculpture: a private moment, dreaming with our hands.

From the beginning, as a painter and a sculptor, Sybil and I responded to each other’s creative ideas. We work and collaborate together every day. I credit Sybil with bringing much of the beautiful color to our collections. Her works are lyrical with elemental forms, expressed with a poet’s subtle color palette.

Also, the way she’s always worn jewelry has inspired the casual, bohemian elegance for which our designs have become known.

The stacking, the layering, the bold scales. I realized early on that we didn’t have to separate the worlds of form and color, of sculpture and painting—they merge organically in our various jewelry collections.

I continue to draw inspiration from art. I’m always inspired by what is modern yet enduring, new pairings of materials or an unexpected combination of colored stones. My designs incorporate a wide range of cultural influences; we are not a brand driven by trend.

With such an extensive body of work, do you have a favorite collection or piece?

For the past 30 years, I’ve evolved the Cable motif in my jewelry, reinventing the twisted helix into myriad designs.

Cable provides a textural contrast to smooth, polished metal.

It appears in elements as small as a bead or a clasp, and can be used as an elegant setting for a gemstone. In essence, Cable is the DNA of the brand.

What do you consider the main reasons for your success in this highly competitive business?

Thank you David and Sybil Yurman, for reminding us that in jewelry, as in nature, components that evolve organically form a stronger and more perfect union than if forced or contrived. It's art imitating life.

We could never have imagined when we started the company in 1980 that it would grow to the size and breadth it is today.

Jane Grote Abell helped her father grow Donatos Pizza into a multimillion-dollar business. After McDonald’s purchased and ran the company for four years, she went all in to help her family buy it back—and then led it through a $10.5 million turnaround. Grote Abell is an author and speaker who relishes integrity-driven business and has appeared on CBS’s hit series Undercover Boss. Now, while overseeing the direction of the company, she also is focusing her efforts on reviving Columbus’ south side, home of the original Donatos.

She co-founded Reeb Avenue Center, which houses more than a dozen nonprofits focused on education, workforce development and more.

Why do you do what you do?

What is your proudest accomplishment?

As a founding member of a family business, I grew up working in an environment that was founded on the Golden Rule—treating others the way you want to be treated. Since I lived right behind the pizza place as a little girl, I was fortunate to experience hospitality firsthand. I knew as a little girl that being around people gave me energy. I enjoyed watching how people came together around a pizza and watching them build relationships that would last a lifetime.

I do what I do today because I believe that we can make a difference in the lives of our associates and our customers. I believe that maintaining a business founded on solid values and principles actually feeds the soul.

I am most proud of my children, who are grounded in their faith and walk with purpose. I’m also proud of the nonprofit that Tanny Crane and I co-founded in 2015. The Reeb Avenue Center is a “Hub of Hope.” Together, with a long list of supporters, we raised $16.5 million to renovate an abandoned elementary school building. It includes Roots Café—a pay-it-forward social enterprise café run by the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. (We are open daily Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please join us for lunch!)

What is the greatest risk you’ve ever taken—and how did the situation turn out?

The single greatest risk I have ever taken was leading the efforts to re-purchase our family business back from McDonald’s in 2003. While we were only under the arches for a few short years, we experienced a significant impact culturally and financially. We bet on our people, and our people had a $10.5 million turnaround in the first year.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

My dad taught me to always love my way through difficult situations. It means putting yourself in the other person’s shoes. It challenges you to approach every situation or decision with a win-win attitude.

If you could tell 20-year-old you one thing, what is it?

Be present in every moment. Don’t be in such a hurry to get to where you are going that you lose the joy of getting there. Do something that brings you joy and makes a difference in the lives of the people around you.

Matthew Goldstein was succeeding in his career at Abercrombie & Fitch. But the weekend calls he took as a suicide hotline volunteer crushed him. He wanted to connect more deeply with the city he loves. Others, he realized, wanted the same—but they couldn’t find easy opportunities. So Goldstein left corporate life and founded Besa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting those who need it most by connecting people and businesses with local charities. Lift one, he believes, and you lift us all. In five years, Besa has forged partnerships with some of the most notable companies in Columbus, from Express to Big Lots to Jeni’s. It has rallied more than 15,000 volunteers to complete more than 1,000 projects for more than 50 nonprofits community-wide. It has made $2 million in community impact to date, and it’s on track to make $5 million in impact by 2020.

Why do you do what you do?

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I want to inspire people to connect with their community in genuine and authentic ways. All of us can turn on the TV and easily get frustrated. My goal is to channel people’s energy in productive ways, so they can be part of building stronger, healthier, better communities for all of us.

Stepping off that cliff to found Besa. I knew nothing about running a nonprofit. But I thought I could add value to the community, and I wanted to try. I’m still in awe of the amazing people who have rallied to build this with us. The next step is, how do we turn this into a national movement?

If I’m able to do that, I’ll be thrilled.

What is the greatest risk you’ve ever taken?

What are five things you love?

At the time, the greatest risk I ever took was coming out. I felt like I was going to alienate people and let family down. I had no idea how it was going to affect my life. As it turns out, being true to myself allowed me to be more sincere with other people. It did change relationships that I had. It challenged friends and family to think of me in a different way—one that is more authentic to who I am. Ultimately, that strengthened relationships. Volunteers tell me all the time they like Besa because it feels genuine and authentic. I think a big part of that is because I wasn’t always those things, and they have become very important values to me. So I’m glad that comes through in Besa.

As someone who is loving and genuine. I hope someone describes me as a person who wanted to change the world and inspired others to join him—and together, we did.

Angela Meleca spent 20 years telling stories in news, politics and public relations. Now, she tells them through art. Five years ago, she turned her passion into her business by opening her bright, modern gallery in the heart of Downtown on Capitol Square. Her mission? To help elevate the arts and culture conversation in Columbus. A smart city, she believes, needs smart arts and culture to thrive. “We have many of the ingredients needed to change the perception that we are lacking in culture—Columbus Museum of Art, The Wexner Center for the Arts, CCAD’s Beeler Gallery, OSU Urban Arts Space, Pizzuti Collection, BalletMet, the Symphony,” Meleca says. “Collaboration is key, and we are moving in the right direction.”

Why do you do what you do?

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Ultimately, I am a storyteller. I believe in the power to inspire through storytelling. I’ve spent 25 years in various ways communicating stories, ideas and issues. Personally, I am passionate about the arts. So five years ago, I decided to dedicate time to telling the stories of artists by way of giving them a platform to exhibit their work in a gallery. I investigate and explore thoughts and ideas through artists and the work they make. Art has the ability to bring people together by way of seeing something from a different point of view. Art is a fantastic element which brings depth and diversity to build a better and stronger community. I think it’s important as a culture to contemplate and celebrate art—it can have such a profound impact on society.

If you could tell 20-year-old you one thing, what is it?

Be patient.

How do you hope someone describes you in 50 years?

Well, a friend once told me 20 years ago (yikes!) that I had “moxie.” I guess I hope to be described the same way. Along with, “She is caring.”

What does success mean to you?

Doing what you love and surrounding yourself with those you love.

The Idea Foundry is a real gem in Columbus’ burgeoning Franklinton neighborhood—a former factory building that now boasts offices, classrooms, communal working nooks and event spaces. At 60,000 square feet, it’s the largest Makerspace in the world—a community where anything from furniture to drones to video games are birthed by artists, techies and entrepreneurs. Casey McCarty is the Foundry’s COO. With an MBA and big ambitions, she helped CEO Alex Bandar grow the Foundry from a place without real money for salaries into one attracting serious investors—and national media attention.

Why do you do what you do?

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I love to solve puzzles and problems. I genuinely enjoy looking at the pieces and discerning the gestalt of a situation.

Testing variables and learning how things work—and how to make them better—is geek nirvana for me. The amazing thing about a Makerspace is that it’s a breathing ecosystem.

People bring fresh ideas to classic ways of making, building and designing. People create internal economies and build friendships. Our community is always evolving, and each incarnation requires slightly different leadership. Like any ecosystem, you can steward and influence, but there’s no perfect control—it’s a fresh new set of puzzles and opportunities.

I’m extremely proud of how my company has grown and matured and the service level we now execute. We have touched so many local entrepreneurs and small business owners, and I love to see the ripple effect of those people being successful in our community.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

How do you hope someone describes you in 50 years?

What are five things you love?

In 20 years, A Kid Again has served more than 50,000 families across Ohio by fostering hope, happiness and healing for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Now, the nonprofit organization— which provides adventures to places from the Columbus Zoo to Cedar Point—is going national. Longtime CEO Jeffrey Damron is passing his baton to Oyauma Garrison, who has become the first president and CEO of A Kid Again’s national office. Damron, who started his professional career as a Diamond Cellar sales associate in the late 1980s and has worked in nonprofits for 25 years, is thrilled that the organization he long helmed is expanding. And Garrison, a former insurance industry executive, is up for the challenge.

“The potential of A Kid Again is limitless,” he says. “There is every reason to believe we can be a national and global organization over time.”

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Why do you do what you do?

Stop giving one-time experiences to kids with lifethreatening illnesses and provide year-round adventures so they can anticipate being out of the hospital and making memories with family. It was from Pam—the mother of a child we served.

We are not measured by what we accumulate in life but rather by how we help others with the tools and resources we are fortunate to obtain in our journey. I had a personal experience of having a child overcome a life-threatening moment in life. And having the community rally in support led me to want to help others facing similar situations.

What is your perfect day?

Spending the day with my wife Sue, our kids and grandkids, and serving others who need a hand up. Followed by some ice cream!

What are five things you love?

Michael Dell presented at a conference I attended, and I had the pleasure of meeting him in person. His philosophy for Dell was this: “Be pleased but never satisfied.”

Who do you think is changing the game in Columbus?

Gen Z. Much like my generation (Gen X), those before them are coming to recognize the impact this generation will make in our community. They have more at their disposal in terms of technology, opportunity and resources. Gen Z is the new emerging market.

DESIGN CONCEPTION

STONE SETTING

A designer goldsmith will listen to your inspirations and desires and translate them into a concept, and eventually a finished sketch, of your custom design.

Gemstones are carefully selected and matched to create perfect symmetry as well as ensure consistency in size, weight and color.

RENDERING THE DESIGN

HAND-FINISHING THE PIECE

Using Computer-Aided Design software, a 3D rendering is created.

WAX CARVING / 3D PRINTING

The craftsman then creates a wax carving or uses a 3D printer to make an exact replica of your design. This is then used to create a mold so the form of your ring can start to take shape.

CASTING

At this stage, intricate details are added by the goldsmith where needed, final finishing is done and the piece is handpolished and cleaned.

DELIVERY

From ideas and inspirations to a beautiful, custom-designed piece, our goldsmiths have made your piece a reality. Now it’s yours to enjoy for a lifetime.

During this step, the wax is burned away and replaced with precious platinum, gold or silver. The actual metal form of your jewelry is revealed, and the craftsman can begin to add the beautiful gemstones.

Starting with the most stringent selection criteria, each stone is sorted individually by hand and closely examined to surpass standards of carat, clarity, color and cut. Using only top-quality colorless diamonds in brilliant 8/8, trapeze or baguette cuts, artisan gem-setters then work their magic: bead setting, channel setting, bezel setting and prong or claw setting, all to create an ideal arrangement of perfectly positioned gems.

Peace for Paws was founded in 2011 in Dublin, Ohio, by a group of dedicated animal lovers, and it’s an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization.
