What inspires you? A philanthropist raising money for a global cause, an artist who creates innovative work, an educator devoted to enriching children’s lives. For me, it could be a piece of music, a simple act of kindness or just about anything that motivates me to get going. When putting together this year’s Fashion Issue, we assembled a plethora of stories, interviews and photographs that we hope will stimulate your senses and encourage you to consider your personal style. We sat down with our style pros, four Bergen County boutique owners, who discussed fashion trends, date-night looks and the people they admired both in and out of the industry. (One of their answers, Audrey Hepburn, is one of my personal favorites too.) Read what Sue Bahng, Lynn White, Yansi Fugel and MaryAlice Farella shared on page 44. Everyone knows that denim is a fashion staple, and we all have our favorites. But in “It’s All in the Jeans,” beginning on page 38, we present fresh spring looks that will make you rethink your favorite fabric. Looking for more ways to renew your look? Flip to page 28 for ideas to incorporate the color purple into your ensemble and page 30 for gorgeous emerald and jade pieces that will make you the envy of other women. When you consider the world’s fashion capitals, it’s easy to conjure street-style images from Paris, Milan, Singapore and New York. On page 56, four Bergenites tell us about their experiences and what they saw in these fashion meccas—from iconic sites to trend-setting styles. Sometimes, what you see on the catwalk will inspire home design. Take a look at the spaces featured in “Of Runways & Rooms,” starting on page 50, to see how elements of style can transfer from the stage to your home. Lest you think we forgot about St. Paddy’s Day, Local Buzz has the 4-1-1 on Bergen County’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations as well as a list of Irish pubs where you can sip a glass of Guinness and enjoy bangers and mash. And learn how to make a bright green Shamrock Midori Martini, our cocktail of the month, featured on page 72. We hope you enjoy these and all the stories in this month’s issue. Here’s hoping for a month of celebrating and a season filled with inspiration.

PARADE PREMIERE Rutherford residents needn’t travel far to enjoy a St. Patrick’s Day parade this year: The town is hosting its very first on March 4. The idea was proposed to Mayor Joe DaSalvo by Patrick O’Neill, a local police officer and member of the Emerald City Pipe & Drum Band who travels down to Belmar’s parade every year. It was O’Neill’s hope—and now reality—that local musical groups and Irish organizations could participate in an event closer to home. Meanwhile, the Bergen County Irish Association is holding its 37th annual parade on Sunday, March 11 at 2 p.m. on Washington Avenue in Bergenfield. Resident Thomas O’Reilly will serve as this year’s grand marshal, and there will be performances from local Irish stepdance troupes and musical groups.

DID YOU KNOW? Planning to party on St. Patrick’s Day? You won’t be the only one—experts estimate that Americans will spend a whopping $5.3 billion on the holiday this year! BERGENMAG.COM

CULINARY CORNER

The New Jersey Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) in Trenton awarded 35 NJ teachers $5,000 scholarships; with a donation from Bayer USA, CTL was able to help the educators earn certification in physics so that NJ students have as many science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) role models as possible. Out of the 35 teachers, eight of them call Bergen County home: Galia Kisiova, Cliffside Park High School Frances McCoy, Cresskill Middle/High School Nicole Gersht, Holmstead School in Ridgewood Rob Salgado, Pascack Hills High School Steven Gross, Ridgewood High School Rachel Godfrey, Sage Day School in Rochelle Park Marsha Hirsch, Sage Day School in Rochelle Park Keri Parry, Wood-Ridge Jr./Sr. High School

“It bothers me when people who have the flu or flu-like symptoms refuse to put on the required medical masks!” —Mike Kaefer, Paramus

TURKISH DELIGHT The brand-new Usta Grill in Cliffside Park is promising “spontaneous, homemade” Turkish dishes like kofte (meatballs), paninis, stews and cold bean salads, which are served seven days a week until 9:30 p.m. Owners Adem Kazanci and Kemal Buyukbaran are running the show, with Adem in charge of all chef’s duties (including pastries); the restaurateur has been cooking since he was 13 and most recently worked at a kosher steakhouse in Brooklyn. DOMINICAN DIGS Authentic Dominican food is on tap at El Malecon, one of Fort Lee’s newest restaurants. Along with mainstays like empanadas and pasteles, owner Leo Reyes is offering dishes that include pollo guisado (chicken stew), mondongo (tripe soup) and pernil al horno (roast pork), plus specialty drinks like tamarindo and morir sonando that are made from natural juices. El Malecon offers specials every day of the week, with discounted lunches for local students and faculty. And when the weather gets warmer, guests can enjoy outdoor seating.

AT THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE

YOUR PET PEEVES… It’s that time of year again— The dreaded cold and flu season is hitting the entire country extra-hard this year, forcing many of us to pay a visit (or two) to the doctor. With that in mind, we asked your fellow Bergenites what irks them most about going to the doc:

TGIF Looking for a new Friday night dinner spot? Try Kinyobi in Hackensack—after all, its name literally means “Friday” in Korean. The establishment’s owner used to cook for friends and family on the weekends and decided to turn this passion into a business. Now, the culinary wiz is serving authentic Korean fare with a twist—like traditional bulgogi (marinated beef) inside of sliders and burritos, topped with guacamole and white kimchi. Other specialties include fried meat, veggie dumplings and spicy sweet chicken wings with crispy fries on the side. India Uhia recently visited Kinyobi with her boyfriend and was more than pleased. “We tried the vegetable pancakes, wings and fried dumplings,” she says. “The portion sizes were perfect, and you could tell that everything was freshly prepared.”

YOU’RE INVITED

SPRING INTO ACTION

April showers may bring May flowers, but it’s never too early to prepare for spring! Check out of the offerings at some of Bergen’s nurseries, and get a head start on your garden now:

You might not find a pot of gold this St. Patrick’s Day, but would you settle for a cold Guinness and some traditional pub grub? We sure would, and that’s why we’ll be heading to one (or more) of these Bergen County Irish pubs. Anyone care to join us?

The Shannon Rose There are plenty of shareable eats—try the Ploughman’s Sampler (nachos, corned beef spring rolls, bacon Cheddar boxty and boneless wings)— plus signature cocktails like the Dublin Mule (Tullamore D.E.W. Irish whiskey, Gosling’s ginger beer, mint syrup and fresh lime). 1200 Route 17, Ramsey, 201.962.7602, theshannonrose.com

Davey’s Irish Pub Popular faves include the Dublin Grilled Cheese (sharp Irish Cheddar with Irish bacon and Grilled Tomato on white bread), which patrons wash down with one of the 16 varieties of beer that are on tap. Hearth & Tap The gastropub has plenty of delicious eats, including the Grass-Fed Burger (with Grafton Irish Cheddar, butcher bacon, onion ring, on a brioche); cocktails include the Smashing Pumpkins, made with Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey, Pumpkin Spice simple and Corazon bitters. 125 N. Kinderkamack Rd., Montvale, 201.307.6300, hearthandtap.com

Biddy O’Malley’s Along with draft beer like Guinness Stout, Harp Lager and Smithwicks Ale, the bistro/bar has a full wine and cocktail menu—plus mouthwatering menu items like Goffle Road Farm's Chicken Liver Pâté.

Tommy Fox’s Alongside burgers, pasta and steaks, the pub has a slew of authentic Irish eats like Shepherd’s Pie, Bangers and Mash, Dublin-Style Fish and Chips and—of course—corned beef and cabbage. 32 S. Washington Ave., Bergenfield , 201.384.0900, tommyfoxs.com

NEW & NOTEWORTHY Looking for a new way to get fit? Club Pilates has just opened a facility in The Shoppes at DePiero in Montvale, alongside other new additions like Chipotle, Starbucks and Ulta. The chain offers classes for students of all skill levels—from beginners to masters—and prides itself on dispelling the belief that Pilates is an “elitistonly” workout. A free introductory lesson is available for newcomers; class schedules and trainers’ bios can be found online.

KITTY LOVE

Muffin, 6-year-old Maine Coon & Rag Doll mix Owner: Heather Cece, Ramsey The mischievous Muffin frequently gets into trouble when she steals Heather’s sponge curlers every morning and uses them as toys, but her naughtiness doesn’t last long: By the time she’s done playing, she’s exhausted and ready for a catnap. She’s not the only fluffy feline in the Cece clan: Muffin has a brother named Jesse that the family also adopted. So how do the siblings get along? “Jesse loves to interrupt Muffin while she’s napping,” Heather says. “Even though they’re from the same litter, he definitely acts like her little brother.” MARCH 2018

LET’S BE REAL

With spring ready to bloom, it’s time to update your wardrobe with some of the season’s hottest patterns.

editor’s pick:

Erase it!

Frankly, the raccoon look never suited us. That’s why we’re really into Onomie’s Bright Concealing Elixir. Not only does it act as a concealer, but a blend of botanicals and antioxidants helps erase dark circles over time. The proof: In one study, those who used it for two months had a 77% improvement! “I’ve been using it for two weeks, and I love how it glides on and stays in place,” says BERGEN Editor in Chief Rita Guarna. “It’s too soon to tell whether it’ll lighten my dark circles, but stay tuned.”

Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton. They’re brands you love and want in your closet, and everyone knows it: boutiques, department stores and, yes, even counterfeiters. And while you don’t think twice about buying from Neiman Marcus in Paramus or the Hermès store in Hackensack—there’s no question that the clothes, shoes, bags and more are the real deal—how do you know the “designer” items at a consignment store are authentic? High-end consignment shop Savvy Chic (30 Cottage Pl., Ridgewood, 201.389.6900, savvychicconsignment. com) is one of the businesses that goes the extra mile to guarantee the authenticity of the goods it sells. Not only does the staff consult with industry experts, they employ the services of Entrupy—a company that uses tech to examine microscopic images and distinguish between genuine and counterfeit versions. Meanwhile, if you already own some swag but want to make absolutely sure that the labels are legit, Savvy Chic can authenticate them for you for just $30 an item. BERGENMAG.COM

BERG.0318.buzz.3.indd 24

Gingham Gingham’s checker board pattern is common on shirts, but now it’s branched out to shoes. A pair of gingham heels or flats, like these by Edison D’Orsay, will be a playful addition to any wardrobe. Talbots, Woodcliff Lake, 201.307.0102

Bandana That familiar print found on the everyday bandana made its way to catwalks during New York Fashion Week thanks to Valentino, among others, who debuted several silk dresses and garments with the design. Nordstrom, Paramus, 201.843.1122

Botanical Botanical and floral prints are as timeless as good ’ol solids and stripes but with much more life. This season, innovation mixes with natural elements to create whimsical patterns for dresses and blouses—like in this piece from Elie Saab. Neiman Marcus, Paramus, 201.291.1920

Rainbow Stripes Somewhere over the rainbow, at New York Fashion Week, precisely, the multi-colored trend was made chic—and now it’s hot for the season. ADV ERTI SEMENT

Finding Excellence and Compassion in Spine and Brain Treatment Highly trained neurosurgeons specializing in back and brain surgery recommend medically proven conservative care when surgery is not the only option. Whether you are facing a “back problem” or a brain tumor diagnosis, consult a neurosurgeon. They specialize in spine, brain, and nerve disorders which often requires collaboration amongst multiple specialties. In New Jersey, the only comprehensive spine and brain center is North Jersey Spine Group. Neurosurgeons Rajnik Raab M.D., recent President of New Jersey Neurosurgical Society, healthcare policy expert, along with recognized leader in both spine and brain surgery, plus fellowship trained, internationally published, Branko Skovrlj, M.D., and awardwinning neurosurgeon, David C. Sundstrom, M.D., have established an exceptional surgical and non-surgical center. Led by award-winning, sports trained, physical medicine, rehabilitation, and headache expert, Monte Haber, M.D., the non-surgical division is comprised of a physiatrist, pain management doctor and physical therapists each certified plus licensed to diagnose and treat “back problems” with the goal of a rapid and permanent recovery. For spine conditions requiring surgery, the value of an evaluation by a neurosurgeon is their rigorous training. A neurosurgeon must endure six to eight years of an intense residency. It is the only surgical training program where physicians extensively study the structural biomechanics of the back, including the bones, discs, and muscles, as well as the central nervous system which is responsible for the communication between the brain, spine, and nerves. Consequently, neurosurgeons are the only surgeons licensed to operate on, not just the vertebral bones of the back, but also on the spinal cord, its branching nerves, the blood vessels that supply the entire nervous system including the brain, and the brain tissue itself. With

“WHAT MAKES our surgical spine and brain center unique is its emphasis on a nonsurgical approach. We have a proven record of returning patients back to their activities-most often without surgery. If surgery is necessary, our knowledge, skills and minimally invasive techniques result in faster recovery times.” –Drs. Raj Raab, Branko Skovrlj, & David Sundstrom, North Jersey Spine Group

their definitive expertise, the esteemed physicians at North Jersey Spine Group philosophically take a conservative approach towards care. Every evaluation involves the consideration of whether a medically proven, evidence-based, non-invasive technique would ultimately treat the patient. Surgery is only offered once it is determined that it would be the best or only option for a cure or improvement to a patient’s condition. Given the level of complexity for each brain or spine evaluation, plus the all-important compassionate discussion to educate the patient of their diagnosis and treatment plan, each initial visit is scheduled for one hour. If you have sustained a work-related injury, incurred a motor vehicle accident or are looking for a second opinion, your best suited to have an evaluation from the most informed team of spine and brain experts that will compassionately and medically support you as well as help you navigate the frequently confusing healthcare system. The North Jersey Spine Group specializes in numerous conditions including disc herniations, degenerative spine conditions, scoliosis, spinal cord injuries, traumatic spine injuries, vertebral fractures, spine tumors, brain tumors, and failed surgeries. The group provides non-surgical treatment options including acupuncture, epidurals, rhizotomies, trigger point injections, joint injections, rehabilitation, and physical therapy. Should surgery be deemed necessary, some of the most common surgeries performed are minimally invasive spine surgery, discectomies, laminectomies, decompressions, spinal fusions, laser spine surgery, cervical disc replacement, and brain tumors.

HOUSING COSTS The median home value in Paramus is currently $589,100—up 3 percent over last year and predicted to rise 1.4 percent within the next year, according to Zillow.

WELCOME TO

Paramus

LOCALS LOVE

Let’s face it: You can’t talk about Paramus without obsessing over its malls—but before we expound on those legendary shopping outlets, let’s talk about all the other reasons Paramus is prime. First off, the borough is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream: The 596acre Saddle River County Park stretches all the way from Rochelle Park to Ridgewood courtesy of a 6.8-mile walking/bike path, with babbling brooks, duck ponds, picnic areas, a waterfall and, in Paramus itself, the historic Easton Tower, built in 1899, along the way. The Van Saun County Park, meanwhile, offers baseball, softball and soccer fields; basketball and tennis courts, a mini-train ride, a playground, a carousel, pony rides and—best of all—a zoo that features mountain lions, spider monkeys, bald eagles and countless other animals. For indoor activities, there’s Humdingers, an “eatertainment” hybrid with 12 boutique-style bowling lanes, eight automated batting cages and plenty of grub; at The Players Club, you can have a 3D golf adventure at once of nearly 50 world-famous golf courses. As far as schooling, the Paramus Public School district educates more than 4,000 students in pre-K to 12th grade (courtesy of about 314 teachers). There’s also Paramus Catholic High School, Yavneh Academy and Yeshivat Noam (for K-8) and Frisch School (for grades

9-12). For higher education, Bergen Community College has satellite centers around the county (the bulk of its 17,000 students are at the Paramus location). Home stores abound in Paramus: There’s Safavieh, Porcelanosa, Lazzoni and BoConcept. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams has its 10,000-sq.-ft. flagship store in the borough, Nortons Paint is the largest retailer of Benjamin Moore in Bergen County, and, in addition to its wares, Floor & Décor offers free how-to classes. And that, at last, brings us to those glorious malls: With 2.1 million square feet of leasable space and more than 300 stores, including Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, Westfield Garden State Plaza is the largest mall in all of New Jersey. Nearby, Paramus Park includes a Macy’s plus a soon-to-come Stew Leonard’s (complete with movie theater); the Outlets at Bergen Town Center boasts a Lindt Chocolatier, the gigantic Century 21, Target and a Whole Foods Market. The Fashion Center, meanwhile, has a Lord & Taylor, TJMaxx, Bed Bath & Beyond, Toys R Us, Fairway Market and Best Buy. And despite the infamous Blue Law (all those malls are closed on Sundays), Paramus’ shopping centers generate over $5 billion in annual retail sales—more than any other zip code in America.

FUN FACTS

DINING

n Paramus was home to one of the earliest drive-in theaters ever, the Paramus Drive-In, located behind what’s now Westfield Garden State Plaza. It closed in 1987 after showing one last double feature: Crocodile Dundee and The Untouchables. n When ’80s teen queen Tiffany launched her now-famous “mall tour” to promote her debut album back in 1987, her very first stop was Bergen Mall. n The Sopranos featured Paramus more than once: Garden State Plaza was shown in several episodes, and in the series finale, a scene with everyone’s favorite underboss (aka Paulie Walnuts, pictured) was filmed there.

There’s plenty of good food at Garden State et al (including the Capital Grille), but man does not live by malls alone: Locals head to El Cid for giant helpings of Spanish cuisine (and lots of sangria); the fairly new Phat Platters, meanwhile, serves Halal/ Mediterranean dishes (including wings that have already gained a rabid following). And at Chakra, chef Thomas Ciszak whips up multicultural dishes in an Asian-inspired, candlelit atmosphere (space is limited, so be sure to call ahead for a reservation).

MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME Approximately $101,793, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau statistics.

Clockwise from top: Sweet Jelly Bean; Gettyiamges; El Cid; HPO

The borough may be famous for its shopping, but it has plenty more to offer.

nB uying their tickets online—and choosing and reserving their seat at the same time—for a movie at AMC Garden State 16. n Soaking in local history at the Fritz Behnke Historical Museum, which features artifacts like one of the first electric washing machines ever made. n Getting a new cut ’n color (or maybe a Brazilian blowout) at J&Co Hair.

DID YOU KNOW? The name Paramus is said to be of Native American origin; it’s derived from words meaning “land of the turkey” because the town once had an abundance of the wild fowl. BERGENMAG.COM

{ PRO TIPS }

SUE BAHNG

Owner of Ginger N’ Cream, Westwood Who’s your all-time style icon? Audrey Hepburn—I loved her classic elegance, strength, confidence and vulnerability. It may not sound original, but growing up, I used to love watching old movies, and I was captivated by their glamour and the escape. Your experiences as a child shape you as an adult. Tell us about your personal style. I love to be on trend, but in an age appropriate, subtle manner. I like classics with a twist—a little sensual, but not too sexy. What’s your make-it-or-break-it statement piece? Most of the time, it’s a new jean silhouette or the must-have shoe for the season. I also like to cycle older pieces with updated ones to get a fresh look. When it comes to date night, what’s your favorite look? Since most date nights are pretty casual—a dinner and a drink—I like to wear a sexy jean with a feminine blouse and a little heel. Voilà! You’re ready to enjoy the evening. What’s your daily go-to outfit? Jeans and a fun top paired with a cute bootie or slip-on sneaks. Since I’m running around all day, I like to be comfortable yet put together. When it gets really hot, I’m partial to one-pieces—a light jumpsuit is my favorite. Put it on and go! As far as the all-important LBD, how can one dress it up or down for either daytime or evening? A LBD can take you anywhere, and I believe a girl can never have too many of them. Because slip-on sneakers and mules are so on trend, pair them with a classic LBD shape along with a crossbody bag during the day. For the evening, simply change shoes, accessories and the bag. Put on a fabulous metallic heel, switch the bag shape to a clutch, add statement hoops and you’re ready for cocktails.

LYNN WHITE

Owner of Sutton East, Wyckoff Who’s your all-time style icon? Coco Chanel—she influenced my views on fashion the most. On my 16th birthday, my mother gave me a string of pearls and a bottle of Chanel No. 5, and I’ve continued this tradition with my daughter and granddaughter. Coco is timeless. What’s your make-it-or-break-it statement piece? A piece that is made to last, like a tailored pair of pants made of quality fabric. Women go out and buy items from outlet stores that they have to replace after a few washes when they could just purchase a high-end piece that will last from 5 to 10 years. Tell us about your personal style. I am deeply influenced by Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn— their looks will be forever fashionable. Back in the ’50s, Audrey’s go-to casual outfit was a pair of slacks and a turtleneck, and you better believe this look still works today. That’s the kind of timeless style I emulate. I’ve been wearing the same strand of pearls for 60 years, and they are as fabulous as the day I got them. What’s your daily go-to outfit? One I can wear in a variety of situations, like a smart pant suit with a cashmere sweater. It’s a look that works for meetings, client consultations and a dinner out. When it comes to date night, what’s your favorite look? It all depends on where a woman is going. Out for dinner at a fancy restaurant? Staying in to watch a movie? It is all about how the outfit matches her mood and what makes her feel most sensual. As far as the all-important LBD, how can one dress it up or down for either daytime or evening? Every woman should have three LBDs in her closet, one for each season. She can wear the piece on its own for work, then dress it up with a strand of pearls. When it comes to accessorizing, less is more. A woman will most likely already have her hair and makeup done, so it’s already busy above the neck. Keep it simple yet suave with an elegant necklace.

{ PRO TIPS }

YANSI FUGEL

Designer of Tux Couture, Ridgewood Who’s your all-time style icon? My mother. She was always so put-together, dressed up and accessorized with lipstick that matched her outfit. One of my most beloved pieces is from her—a lamb leather clutch with a metal clasp and pockets made specifically for a woman’s lipstick and address book. It’s so indicative of the time, and it will always remind me of her. She always sewed my clothing with patterns of her own invention and taught me how to make my own. What’s your make-it-or-break-it statement piece? A black turtleneck—it’s classic yet subversive. You can pair it with jeans and a leather jacket, or even a sleek tux jacket with leather pants. It’s a timeless closet essential. Tell us about your personal style. I approach style with a timeless attitude but try to stay current as well. I’m all about high-quality pieces with a minimalistic aesthetic—not needing a ton of items in my closet but being able to mix and match them well. What’s your daily go-to outfit? Something comfortable for a day in the studio! Comfort and movement are so important to me. I’ll usually throw on a skinny pant and oversize top with a pair of shoe boots. They are my go-to shoes—I have them in varying heights, styles and patterns. When it comes to date night, what’s your favorite look? It’s all about what you wear on top. You’ll most likely be sitting down to dinner or a movie, so dress up the top half of your body with a fun top and jewelry, and pair with skinny blank pants. Your choices should match your mood that night so you are your most confident self.

As far as the all-important LBD, how can one dress it up or down for either daytime or evening? What about a little black tuxedo instead? Women love wearing pants but feel like they have to wear a dress to fancier occasions. A couture female tux is the best of both worlds. You can dress it down by wearing the silk-lined tux jacket with a white T-shirt and jeans and dress it up with bedazzled shoes and statement jewelry.

MARYALICE FARELLA

Owner of Society Men and Society Femme, Westwood Who’s your all-time style icon? I am my own style icon. My mother taught me to wear styles that work best for me—I’m a curvy 6-feet tall —and I’ve embraced that for years. Everyone is a different height and shape, so dressing for yourself is key. It’s an art I often teach clients—it builds inner confidence, as many people stress over getting dressed. Recently, a client told me I am her “style secret weapon,” and I couldn’t be happier with a compliment like that! Tell us about your personal style. It varies from day to day—one day, my mood may be chic, classic jeans with a cashmere sweater layered over a tank or under a fur vest with boots; on another day, I may be feeling edgy and mix a fitted black long sleeve tee with track striped joggers and a very cool Chanel sneaker. No matter what, I always need to be comfortable. What’s your make-it-or-break-it statement piece? I have so many—my very favorite is the pair of canary & white diamond earrings my husband gave me on our wedding day. They can be worn casually with jeans and a tee shirt or formally with any cocktail or evening attire. Another daily favorite are a mix of bracelets I’ve collected through the years. Stacking and mixing them gives me an edgier look that can’t be duplicated. When it comes to date night, what’s your favorite look? A silk blouse, jeans, a great pair of shoes, statement jewelry and a good fur. I usually plot date night wears around a statement accessory like a favorite clutch or piece of jewelry. What’s your daily go-to outfit? Anything black paired with a scarf—that’s an essential you should never leave home without. As far as the all-important LBD, how can one dress it up or down for either daytime or evening? I love a little black dress paired with a boot and camo jacket for day. Change into a leather jacket and a heel or bootie for a sexier night look.

When Salvatore Ferragamo unveiled his Spring 2018 Readyto-Wear Collection in Milan, one model donned an ultra-soft jumpsuit in blue—a shade that’s common in this dining room. Aside from the chairs, a chandelier, vases and even a painting with streaks of the hue make for a cohesive—and eye-catching—look. Meanwhile, the designer’s orange accessories—the belt and bag—are echoed in the ginger jars flanking the buffet, the artwork’s subject and the roses atop the dining table.

PARIS

“Visiting Paris felt like a time warp to another era. The architecture and art of the Renaissance was very prominent in the city and in the museums, and they’re all breathtaking! Walking among Parisians made me feel like I was in 1920s New York, a time when everyone was put together so elegantly. People out on a casual stroll were dressed nicely—women in nice but subdued dresses, jackets, scarves and boots, and men donning blazers and trousers. Of course, there are clothing and fashion boutiques everywhere, so there are plenty of options to find the best outfits.” —Yvonne Marki, Harrington Park

MILAN

SINGAPORE

“My friends and I were mesmerized by the beautiful architecture in Milan. I’m a photographer, so I was a little giddy seeing the intricate details of the Gothic cathedrals and castles. Milan is a fashion mecca, so walking around the city was like experiencing a live fashion show, especially around the Piazza del Duomo. Everyone looked amazing, and the styles were very sophisticated and individualized. Guys embraced the tailored look; and while many women were chic, others were more bold and daring— some wore bright reds and oranges, others were in head-to-toe Gucci.” —Mark Pineda, River Edge

“I visited Singapore on business but was lucky enough to have some free time to explore, visiting the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel. And Merlion Park, with its mythical statue of a half-fish, half-lion, is a must-see. I was surprised to find so many hole-in-the-wall-type restaurants that featured amazing food. As for the fashion, it was cool to see so many people going about their daily lives and looking so polished. The use of bright hues to offer a pop of color to otherwise neutral looks was interesting. I couldn’t resist bringing back a pair of laser-cut black wedges. I’d never seen anything like them before.” —Sophia Belloso, Paramus

NEW YORK

“There are nearly 1,000 fashion headquarters in New York City, and I am lucky enough to work at one in the heart of the Garment District. Street style is really what makes this city stand out because people are not afraid to take fashion risks and flaunt what they like. Lately, I’ve been seeing oversize faux fur jackets in beige and pastel tones and black combat boots, but styles are changing every day. The city is rich in fashion history, and fashionistas should make a point of visiting The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, Historical Garment Center and Macy’s Herald Square, to name a few places.” —Melissa Richmond, Wyckoff

From left: A fluted skirt and striped tee are typical of a French ensemble, but nothing says “Paris” like a statement scarf and the Eiffel Tower. Catch a glimpse of Milan’s chic and sexy style (as seen in Josephine Skriver’s pieces that closely resemble lingerie) while strolling the Piazza del Duomo. Singapore’s cosmopolitan and polished style mixes Eastern and Western influences, as does the modern architecture found around Marina Bay. From oversize wool coats by Olivia Palermo to slogan beanies, there is plenty of fashion inspiration on the streets of New York. BERGENMAG.COM

HEALTH SCREENINGS: A WOMAN’S GUIDE

Follow this guide to help ensure that health problems are detected early, when they’re most treatable, says Laurie G. Jacobs, M.D., of Hackensack Meridian Health. Your healthcare provider can modify these recommendations based on your medical history and personal risk factors.

Breast Health

Colon Health

n Breast Self-Exam and Clinical Breast Exam: Both are not recommended for average-risk women, but should be done to evaluate complaints or for higher-risk women. n Mammogram: Screening for women aged 40 to 49 should be individualized based upon risk; the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPST) recommends biennial screening mammography for women aged 50 to 74 years. The evidence is insufficient to recommend routine screening after age 75.

n Cancer screening: Colonoscopy every 10 years or high sensitivity stool-based tests for average risk individuals (can be done at home and requires no bowel preparation) every year. Talk to your physician about which option is best for you. For those at average risk, colon-cancer screening should occur from age 50 to 75. For more information: Colon Cancer Prevention Center, 551.996.2272

For more information: Betty Torricelli Institute for Breast Care, 551.996.2222

Heart Health n Blood pressure test: The USPSTF recommends adults aged 18 and older with normal blood pressure should have their blood pressure checked every year. Adults whose measured systolic blood pressure was 120 to 129, or have risk factors for hypertension (obesity, for example), should have their blood pressure checked semiannually. n Cholesterol panel: Women who are 20 years and older who are at increased risk for coronary heart disease. Discuss the right frequency for you with your healthcare provider.

Women’s Health Primary Care n Pelvic exam: Screening pelvic examination is recommended at the time of screening for cancer (PAP) and/or STI screening, as well as for complaints; the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends annual screening for adults 21 years of age and older. n Pap test: At least every three years for ages 21 to 65 years. Women older than 65 should have the test if they have not had adequate prior screening. n Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) tests: Screening, if sexually active, for STIs and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). n Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine: Women up to age 26 whose HPV vaccine series is incomplete (two to three doses are required, depending on the age at which the vaccine is given) should discuss vaccination with their healthcare provider.

For more information: Heart Center, 551.996.3800

One-time Screenings n Hepatitis C (HCV): The USPSTF recommends screening for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection for persons at high risk for infection. The USPSTF also recommends one-time screening for HCV infection to adults born between 1945 and 1965. n Bone density: Women 65 and older or those at high risk should be screened.

For more information: Women’s Health Primary Care at Hackensack University Medical Center, 551.996.8111.

In addition to the screenings, tests and vaccines listed here, any time you have concerns about your sleep habits, mental health, risk factors for disease or symptoms you are experiencing, talk with your doctor, says Laurie G. Jacobs, M.D., chair and professor, Department of Medicine at Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center and Seton Hall–Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Early detection of disease can help people live longer, healthier lives, so keep a copy of these guidelines, which are based on the U.S Preventative Services Task Force, and share the information with friends and family who may benefit.

PASTA-BILITES

With lots of healthy vegetables, nuts and beans, these vegan dishes pack quite a nutritional punch. Plus, they have so much flavor, you won’t be missing meat!

ASIAN STIR FRY Yields: 3 or 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

n 12 oz. rice noodles n 4 heads of bok choy, white stems separated from the greens n 2 garlic cloves, chopped n ½ red chile, sliced or chopped n 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped n 4 Tbs. tamari or soy sauce n Sweet & Salty Cashews, chopped (see recipe below) SWEET & SALTY CASHEWS n 1 Tbs. maple syrup n 1 Tbs. nama shoyu or tamari n 1 tsp. garlic powder n 1 tsp. smoked paprika (optional) n 1½ cups raw cashews

DIRECTIONS

Cook the noodles in boiling water following the package instructions. When done, drain then rinse with cold water and let sit. Chop the white stems of the bok choy and cook them in a wok over high heat with a splash of water, stirring constantly. After 3 to 4 minutes, add the garlic, chile and ginger and keep stirring. After a minute, add the noodles, bok choy greens and a splash of water if needed. Mix well until the noodles are warm (about two minutes), then add the soy sauce or tamari. Toss well. Serve scattered with the chopped cashews. You can also drizzle with some toasted sesame oil, if you like. TO MAKE THE CASHEWS Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix the maple syrup, nama shoyu or tamari with the garlic powder and smoked paprika, if using. Place the cashews in a large bowl, pour over the sauce and mix well until thoroughly coated. Transfer the cashews (leave the excess seasoning in the bowl) to the lined baking sheet, spread out evenly and roast in the oven for 3 minutes.

Everyone can benefit from following vegan recipes because they’ll consume plenty of plant-based nutrients like fiber. There are other benefits as well: Eating even one plant-based meal per week can reduce your carbon footprint.”

—Sara Monk, registered dietitian, Riverfront Nutrition Associates, Oradell

Remove the sheet, stir the nuts then return them to the oven and cook for a further 3 to 4 minutes. Keep an eye on them: They should turn light golden but you don’t want to burn them. Remove the nuts from the oven and allow to cool so they become crisp, then serve. BERGENMAG.COM

OIL-FREE PISTOU WITH PASTA Yields: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

n 14 oz. short pasta n 1 4 oz. green beans, cut in half or into thirds n 1 head of broccoli, cut into small florets n 2 large bunches of basil (each 3 oz.), roughly chopped n ¼ avocado n 4 to 6 garlic cloves, chopped n j uice of 1 lemon n p ine nut “parmesan” (optional, see recipe, below) PINE-NUT “PARMESAN” n ¼ cup pine nuts n ½ tsp. garlic powder (optional) n 3 Tbs. nutritional yeast

DIRECTIONS

Cook the pasta according to the package instructions in plenty of boiling water. Bring another pot of water to a boil and add the green beans. Cook for 7 to 8 minutes with the lid on, and after 3 to 4 minutes, add the broccoli, then drain and let sit. Meanwhile, make the pistou. Put the basil, avocado, garlic, lemon juice and 1 tsp. salt in a blender and add about ¼ cup of water. Process until smooth. Add more water a tsp. at a time if it needs loosening. Drain the pasta, reserving 3 Tbs. of the cooking water. Add the vegetables, pistou and reserved cooking water (it will make your pasta creamier) to the pasta and mix so the pasta is evenly coated. Serve immediately. TO MAKE THE “PARMESAN” In a food processor, combine the pine nuts, garlic powder, if using, and yeast with ½ tsp. of sea salt; pulse until a grated Parmesan-like consistency is formed.

When you substitute a vegan-based cheese, like the pine nut ‘parmesan,’ for a dairy-based one, you cut out excess fat and salt but still get the desired flavor. Meanwhile, the broccoli and green beans in this recipe provide antioxidants, nutrients, fiber and immunit-boosting health benefits.”

NOODLES WITH CARROT MISO SAUCE Yields: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

n 9 oz. carrots, peeled and grated n ½ cup light miso paste n ¼ cup tahini n 1 Tbs. yuzu vinegar or rice vinegar n 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and grated n 12 oz. noodles of your choice n 1 ¼ cup cooked edamame beans

DIRECTIONS

First make the sauce by blending the grated carrots, miso, tahini, vinegar, ginger and 1 cup of water in a high-speed blender until smooth. Taste, add more salt if needed, then let sit. Cook the noodles in boiling water according to the package instructions. When ready, drain and rinse. Divide the sauce between four bowls, then top with the noodles and beans and serve immediately.

This is a well-balanced dish consisting of real, whole foods. Carrots are high in Vitamin A, which is an essential nutrient for good vision, and ginger has Vitamin E, which aids in digestion. Edamame is a great plant-based protein with fiber, calcium and iron too. It just goes to show that you can still get necessary protein and nutrients from a vegan meal.” —Sara Monk, registered dietitian, Riverfront Nutrition Associates, Oradell

{ POWER FOOD }

Extra Oregano, Please

You’ll be ordering more of the herb on just about every dish—including pizza, of course—when you discover how it fends off cancer, fights fungus and more. The mere mention of it may bring to mind a smorgasbord of Italian-American dishes but, turns out, oregano has been used in Mediterranean cuisine for years—a relative of marjoram, it’s actually referred to as “wild marjoram” in the Mediterranean, where it flourishes in the countryside. Because it’s an herb, you’re not likely to eat a lot of it at once—but fortunately, it doesn’t take much oregano to reap a host of health-boosting benefits. POWER UP At only three calories, one teaspoon of dried oregano has a whopping 8 percent of the recommended daily value (RDV) of vitamin K, which helps your blood clot and promotes bone health. It also has 2 percent of the RDV of fiber (.4 grams), calcium (15.8

micrograms) and iron (.4 grams). Other vitamins it contains include A, C, E and B6 as well as folate. A study at Louisiana State University found that adding oregano extract can also help extend the life of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids in fish when cooked at high temperatures. Meanwhile, oregano oil has been studied for its antimicrobial and antioxidant effects (including its ability to kill MRSA), and it’s still used in Greece as a natural treatment for certain ailments, including gastrointestinal issues. It works as a preservative too, thanks to its antifungal capabilities—the Herb Society of America reports that Egyptians traditionally used the herb as both a disinfectant and preservative. In the Philippines, its leaves are boiled into a tea to combat the common cold. In addition, two studies found oregano extract may fend off colon cancer by killing cancerous cells and preventing them from proliferating, and another study found it to have the same effect on breast cancer. Its extract is used to ease everything from parasitic infections to respiratory infections to toe fungus (but of course, consult with your doctor before using home remedies, including essential oils).

BUY/STORE/SERVE Unlike other herbs, oregano keeps its flavor well when dried. In fact, some chefs prefer the dried form because of the mellower taste and the rich aroma it produces. If buying fresh, look for healthy-looking leaves that are green with no bruises or discoloration. Buy only a few days before you plan to use them (they can be stored, wrapped, in the refrigerator), and add them to your dish toward the end of cooking. As mentioned earlier, oregano is a welcome addition to Italian food: You can use it in tomato sauces and breadcrumbs, and on pizza. But also consider how other nationalities use the herb—it’s a popular seasoning for meats, including lamb, beef, and chicken, can be added to fish, and can be mixed into a lemon vinaigrette and served on top of a Greek salad. Some other foods the herb complements include eggplant, peppers, mushrooms, olives and even beans. DID YOU KNOW? Oregano has had a place in history dating back millennia. It was likely referenced in the Old Testament (as hyssop) and was traditionally used in laurels for marriage ceremonies by the Greeks and Romans. —Liz Donovan

FAST FACT Oregano didn’t gain popularity in the United States until World War II, when returning soldiers would bring it back with them from Southern Italy. BERGENMAG.COM

RESTAURANT REVIEW:

Elia

A new Mediterranean restaurant in East Rutherford is owned by a mom/daughter duo—and the love shows.

worried that I’d be too full for the entrée. My dinner partner chose the seafood pasta, a heaping mound of house-made fettuccine with shrimp, calamari, scallops and mussels. We counted a dozen mussels in the dish (and plenty of the other fish), which featured a smooth tomato sauce and perfectly cooked pasta. While I was tempted to try one of the lesser-known whole fishes—such as lavrai, a flaky white European sea bass; tsipoura, a firm, mild Mediterranean dorado; or fagri, a pink snapper—I couldn’t resist the Halibut a la Plancha. Served atop trahana, a pebble-shaped grain, with baby peas, grapes, currants, tomatoes and chestnut puree, the fish was perfectly grilled, moist and flavorful. (I did end up taking more than half home to enjoy the next day.) Even though we were sated, we couldn’t resist dessert. We shared the Ekmek Kataifi, a baked custard atop shredded phyllo with a thick layer of whipped cream, crushed pistachios and banana brulee. It was tasty but did not outshine the tried-and-true walnut baklava, served with vanilla ice cream, which proved that a great classic never gets old. Back in our car, I was reminded that we were indeed in East Rutherford. Good! That makes it easy to pay a return visit. —Rita Guarna Elia, 240 Hackensack St., East Rutherford, 201.939.9292; elianj.com

Step inside the East Rutherford restaurant Elia and you just might forget you’re in New Jersey. The whitewashed brick and stucco walls, giant market umbrellas and ficus plants suggest seaside towns on the Mediterranean. There’s a long Carrera marble bar, an open kitchen with a farmer’s market-style front, showcasing fresh fish, fruits and veggies, and white tables with banquette- and chair-style seating. Tables are white with black cloth place mats and a small yet stylish bouquet of greens with wispy flowers. Occupying the space that housed Park & Orchard for 40-odd years, Elia, named for the Greek word for “olive,” unmistakenly exudes a very different vibe. It’s the brainchild of Rutherford native Annamaria Adinolfi and her mom Anna Rosati, and this pair effortlessly reigns over the chic yet unpretentious operation, featuring Greek-Mediterrean fare. Silent owners they are not. It happens that my dining companion’s name was that of a lovely town on the Amalfi coast. When we made our reservation, Annamaria mentioned that it’s her favorite place in the world. When we arrived, she took up the conversation, chatting as if we were old friends. Both mother and daughter were affable, taking pains to ensure that diners enjoyed their experience. Annamaria made the rounds several times during our visit to check on patrons. A busboy quickly filled glasses with water and brought a basket of hot, triangular-cut pitas and a creamy, tangy hummus. Our friendly server, Nikolas, answered our questions about various dishes. (It was only later that I realized he hadn’t told us the specials. Fortunately, we had a fine meal anyway.) Executive chef Jose Luis Falcon has been serving up Greek dishes in New York City, so it’s no surprise that he’s partial to fish. In fact, about three-quarters of the offerings hail from the sea. We chose accordingly. For starters, we opted for the baby shrimp and calamari, flash-fried and served with two dipping sauces: a spicy tomato number and basil aioli. Both the crustaceans and the mollusks were crisp yet tender with no trace of the greasiness that sometimes mars this dish. While that was delicious, it was the grilled octopus that stole the course. Sushi-grade fish—and plenty of it—was grilled to perfection and served with potatoes, grape tomatoes and balsamic onions in a Romesco sauce, an almond and red pepper-based concoction, which had just the right hint of sweetness but was in no way cloying. After eating the pitas and appetizers, I

{ A BERGEN MOMENT }

I took this photo at the annual Bergen County St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Bergenfield. The air was crisp, and everyone was buzzing because the vintage cars were about to proceed down the road. I snapped this just as a little boy sitting in the back of one of them waved to the crowd in excitement.” —Marco Castro, MAC Photography
