Andy Leeds, President WHAT IS THE FOCUS OF THE CHARITIES YOU SUPPORT?

We support organizations that care for the poor, the addicted and children in need. Our showroom has been part of the community for over 50 years, so I’ve been able to directly meet the people we help. I learned about Eva’s Village a few years ago through its fundraisers, but we wanted to do more for them because drug addiction touches so many lives. We replaced worn furniture in Eva’s Hope Residence program, which houses recovering addicts and abused women. We also support Mickey’s Kids Charitable Foundation that helps disabled children who need service/therapy dogs. Each dog costs about $30,000 to raise. We’ve sponsored dogs in addition to taking our employees to the annual fundraiser. When you see these children, your heart aches.

It offers the kids a place to go for safe after-school activities. We are also involved with Covenant House NJ, where we donated furniture to their living quarters. My wife, Lois, who is also the co-owner of our store, began sponsoring orphaned children through the Mighty Acorn Foundation in Africa. She personally saw these children’s needs. A December to remember There’s no avoiding it—the holiday spirit tends to win over everyone by the end of the month. From visits to Santa’s workshop and holiday parties to giving gifts and acts of charity, there’s an abundance of things to do that will inject the spirit into everyone. Here are some ideas to get you into the mood.

Watch a tree lighting: Most towns host their own holiday ceremonies, but few compare to Downtown for the Holidays in Ridgewood. The village illuminates its Christmas tree in grand fashion on Friday, Dec. 2, and it will light its menorah throughout Hanukkah beginning on Dec. 24.

Join a parade: The annual Home for the Holidays Parade rolls through downtown Westwood on Saturday, Dec. 3. High school and community bands, civic groups and local organizations participate in the good-for-the-family affair, which ends with the arrival of jolly old Saint Nick.

Give back to others: Work with groups like Hackensack-based Volunteer Center of Bergen County, which can match you with area individuals and families in need. Once you learn about your “match,” let the spirit of giving shine and purchase toys for the kids, clothing for the parents and necessities for the entire family.

Let’s face it, technology has transformed the way we read.

Vanishing are paper books and periodicals, and disappearing with them are the big-name stores that raised previous generations of bookworms. But Bergen County is home to a handful of independent bookstores that have bucked that trend. They have plenty of titles, and they’re a source for great holiday gifts too. Here are some of our favorite places: Bookends (211 E. Ridgewood Ave., Ridgewood, 201.445.0726; book-ends.com): This quaint shop has hundreds titles for all ages as well as a large selection of autographed books. A mainstay in downtown Ridgewood, Bookends is typically one of the first stops for authors embarking on national book tours.

Shaw’s Book Shop (79 Westwood Ave., Westwood, 201.666.4484): Shaw’s has been a reader’s destination in Westwood for nearly 40 years—perhaps it’s the charming storefront and always-helpful staff that continue to bring people through the doors.

The Curious Reader (229 Rock Rd., Glen Rock, 201.444.1918; thecuriousreaderbooks.com): A unique children’s bookstore, its collection combines today’s titles with classics. The store often hosts children’s authors and events for the kids.

Congratulations to Pascack Valley High School music teacher Argine Safari, who this past fall was named the 2016–17 New Jersey Teacher of the Year. Safari, a Fort Lee resident, has been teaching music theory and leading concerts at the Hillsdale school for the past 11 years.

Honeybees are making a buzz around area hospitals.

No, there aren’t a large number of patients being treated for stings—it’s quite the opposite. Several Bergen County hospitals are teaming with bees for the production of locally grown honey to contribute to the diversity of color and flavor of foods in the community and support sustainable agriculture.

HackensackUMC was the latest to install rooftop honeybee hives; two wooden hives on top of the building in Hackensack house more than 30,000 bees that have already produced dozens of pounds of honey. The bees have made enough of the sweet stuff for the colonies to survive the winter, and the leftovers will be used by the hospital as a food ingredient.

The Valley Hospital installed honeybee hives on the roof of its Paramus building more than three years ago. Valley has been using the honey (leaving ample supply for its makers) in its nutrition program.

“Bees are a big deal for our food supply,” says Kyle Tafuri, senior sustainability advisor at The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center at HackensackUMC. “Every third bite of food we eat is the result of pollination by bees. And worldwide, bees are dying at an alarming rate.”

Charity for children Whether or not contributing to charity is on your holiday to-do list, there are dozens of local and worthwhile organizations that deserve your attention. Among those is the recently launched Spring Lake Toys Foundation (SLTF), a Mahwah-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children with serious illnesses and their families.

The group, founded by Paulette Pera Laurenzi of Mahwah, has adopted a mission to make the lives of their clients a tad easier by providing new toys to children suffering from diseases ranging from juvenile diabetes to childhood cancer. SLTF also offers financial assistance to families struggling to cope with their

Hometown Hero: PAIGE ALENICK

Tooth fairy to the underprivileged An everyday act leads to the launch of a nonprofit promoting dental health both locally and globally. received donations from individuals in 40 states and more than a dozen countries, distributing nearly a quarter of a million toothbrushes. It’s a cause that draws the support of young children, too—Alenick once received packages from a Brownie troop who raised money to buy toothbrushes and from the family of a 2-year-old who used his birthday party to collect toothbrushes to donate in place of gifts.

Contributions don’t only come from individuals, who can find information on how to send brushes or funds through her website, donateatoothbrush.com—Alenick’s been able to convince large companies such as Colgate and Benco Dental to donate to the cause.

Her first brush with volunteerism dates back to the tender age of 7, when Alenick served as the youngest member of Joining Old & Young (JOY), a Demarest-based choir that serenades nursing home residents with tunes from the 1950s and ’60s. “It was incredible to see how people who were in wheelchairs, on stretchers and receiving oxygen responded to the songs—they would start tapping their toes and bobbing their heads,” Alenick recalls. She spent 11 years with the group and even served as its president.

Now her main focus is Donate a Toothbrush, her work for which has won her a number of scholarships and accolades, including a Russ Berrie Award for Making a Difference. She’s also had the opportunity to speak at a United Nations Youth Assembly conference.

Photographs of those who benefit from her hard work keep Alenick going, even when college midterms and essays demand the bulk of her attention—she’s currently a senior at New York University, where she studies psychology and hopes to work toward a doctorate in industrial organizational psychology. “I see little kids and adults holding their toothbrush up like it’s a trophy. For some, it might be the only toothbrush they’ll get in their whole life,” Alenick says. “It’s something we take for granted every day. Seeing that inspires me to keep growing the organization.” —Liz Donovan

When you meet 21-year-old Paige Alenick, it’s no surprise to learn this intelligent, wellspoken young woman has spent two-thirds of her life in volunteerism. But would you believe she’s helmed her own nonprofit, Donate a Toothbrush, for the past six years, sending more than 250,000 toothbrushes to those in need?

The light bulb moment for the Woodcliff Lake resident occurred when she was 15, when during the simple act of brushing her teeth she realized many people around the world don’t have access to such “luxuries” as toothbrushes. “When you think about impoverished countries, you think about how people need food and shelter” rather than hygienic needs such as oral care, she says. But, she adds, poor dental hygiene can lead to an array of health issues, from heart disease to problems with the kidneys and liver.

That moment spurred Alenick—with help from her parents and older sister—to launch Donate a Toothbrush, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that collects toothbrushes and monetary donations.

Through a partnership with Oklahoma-based World Dental Relief (WDR), which provides volunteer dental services during mission trips around the globe, the toothbrushes Alenick collects are distributed to countries like Costa Rica, Senegal, Kenya and Ethiopia. Alenick says her nonprofit fills an important gap, enabling the less fortunate to maintain their dental health after they are treated by volunteers from the relief group.

Locally, Donate a Toothbrush also benefits area organizations from food pantries and domestic abuse shelters to the Rutgers Dental School and the KinderSmile Foundation.

However you want to live, you can do it in Englewood. The city of 27,600 residents does sophisticated urban living and quaint suburban hometown equally well. Neighborhoods are as diverse as the residents, with single-family homes, apartment complexes and luxury condos throughout. Truly the heart of Englewood, the downtown is a mecca for foodies and shoppers alike. Originally settled by the Dutch in the early 16th century, the land came under English rule in 1664. A marker stands at the intersection of Lafayette and West Palisade avenues, where one of the country’s first Liberty Poles stood, erected in 1766 in response to the repeal of the Stamp Act; the Continental Army retreated through the same area 10 years later during the Revolutionary War. Today’s city boundaries were drawn in 1899 from portions of Ridgefield Township and the former Englewood Township.

Educational choices abound in Englewood. Private schools include Dwight-Englewood School, Elisabeth Morrow School, Ability School and Englewood on the Palisades Charter School.

Coughs

Want relief from your rattle, rumble, hack or whoop? Determining its cause may help. By Timothy Kelley A cough may not draw a “bless you!” the same way sneezes do, but it’s something we all experience. It’s the body’s way of protecting itself when an irritant threatens the throat or airways.

“Fortunately, most coughs are benign and self-limiting—they run their course and go away on their own,” says Mitchell Engler, M.D., a pulmonologist at Bergen Medical Alliance in Englewood.

What medicine terms an acute cough—one that’s been going on for three weeks or less—doesn’t mean you have to book it to the doctor unless it’s very thickly productive or accompanied by other worrisome symptoms such as fever and sore throat, adds pulmonologist Harris Tesher, M.D., of Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck.

Coughing can be caused by several conditions, some of which—colds and viral flu, for example— don’t have quick cures and must be waited out.

That doesn’t mean you can’t find some relief from your cough. Dr. Engler recommends drinking plenty of fluids to keep hydrated and using an over-thecounter expectorant such as guaifenesin (marketed as Mucinex, Flexall, Siltussin or Air-Power). “It thins out mucus and makes it easier to cough up,” he explains.

If your cough lasts more than three weeks, it’s time to see your physician. A diagnosis can be tricky, because coughs don’t always match up neatly between characteristics and causes. Still, it’s good to know what you’re up against, so bone up on these seven likely suspects.

Also known as “upper-airway cough syndrome,” this most common cough usually produces phlegm. But contrary to folk wisdom, that phlegm’s color isn’t a reliable indicator of illness. “People will say that if it’s discolored it must be a bacterial infection,” says Dr. Engler.

“That’s simply not the case.”

What to do: If over-the-counter meds don’t bring relief, your physician may prescribe a nasal steroid along with decongestant and antihistamine medications.

Roughly one-fourth of chronic coughs are linked to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which develops when acid backs up into the esophagus. The acid can irritate nerve endings, triggering a nagging cough. This cough could be the culprit if you find you’re coughing more after meals or if your voice is sometimes hoarse. “If your cough gets worse when you lie down,” explains Dr. Tesher, “that’s a sign that it’s either postnasal drip or acid reflux.”

What to do: Your physician may prescribe a proton pump inhibitor or an H2 blocker, a medication that reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach’s lining. Raising the head of your bed at night may help too.

Asthma “This cough, the second most prevalent, tends to be dry, and it’s often accompanied by wheezing and chest tightness,” says Dr. Tesher.

What to do: An asthma rescue inhaler may help calm the cough, and your physician may suggest anti-allergy therapy.

Post-respiratory infection This cough can show up when you’re recovering from an upper respiratory infection.

It develops when the nerves in the airway become hyper-responsive.

What to do: There’s no specific treatment regimen here. Take it easy and try home and over-the-counter remedies—and get lots of rest.

Pneumonia “This is the cough we worry about when someone comes in acutely ill with a brandnew cough,” says Dr. Tesher. “It usually comes with a fever and is very productive, with a thick pus.”

What to do: If you suspect pneumonia, see your physician right away. The diagnosis is confirmed when, along with a heavy cough and fever, an “infiltrate finding”—an abnormal substance—shows up on a chest X-ray. Antibiotics can knock out bacterial pneumonia, while viral pneumonia can be treated with medications to combat symptoms and keep the infection from spreading in the body. But antiviral medications don’t always provide relief. “Antiviral agents like TamiFlu are effective for some viruses,” explains Hormoz Ashtyani, M.D., a pulmonologist at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack. “The main goal of treatment in viral pneumonia is to provide support and give the body a chance to defeat it.”

Whooping cough (pertussis)

This highly contagious disease has made a comeback, and it affects adults as well as kids. It gets its name from the sound of its cough—a very specific, loud barking cough that comes in fits. Says Dr. Tesher, “Often there’s post-cough vomiting.”

What to do: Pertussis is a bacterial infection that responds to treatment with antibiotics. But since its distinctive “whoop” doesn’t always show up clearly at the start, it can be challenging for doctors to spot. See a physician promptly if you even suspect you or your child is developing whooping cough.

Need to tame a pesky cough? Try a teaspoon and a half of honey. Recent studies suggest honey is at least as effective as dextromethorphan, the most common cough-suppressant medication in relieving coughs that keep both adults and children awake. It’s easier to spell too.

(But don’t give honey to a baby under 1 year old because of a small risk of infant botulism.)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) This progressive condition, which literally takes your breath away, produces long bouts of mucus-heavy coughing that often seem self-perpetuating. Its usual cause is cigarette smoking, although long-term exposure to dust, air pollution or chemical fumes may also play a role.

What to do: Heed your doctor. What triggers concern in a constant cougher is a change in the nature—the quality, frequency or depth—of the coughing. Also, advises Dr. Engler, “if you notice that sputum is streaked, specked or tinged with blood, see your physician promptly.” Treatments include bronchodilators and inhaled steroids, and extreme cases of COPD may require oxygen therapy. If you’re a smoker, this is the time to quit. Seek support from your physician or smoker helplines and websites.

“Julie really listens to what you want and understood what I was looking for with two young children—a home that was beautiful yet accessible and livable,” explains Katie. Having recently moved from Hoboken, Katie found Kantrowitz when sifting through recommendations on a Facebook page for Hoboken moms and dads, not even realizing until she contacted her that Kantrowitz was also in Ridgewood.

“She came over when Penny was 2 weeks old, so it was mayhem, and we hit it off immediately,” remembers Katie. “She seemed to know exactly what I wanted. My son was doing cartwheels, and she realized that instead of a coffee table with sharp corners, we needed an ottoman. was also family-friendly. Kantrowitz decided to build on the navy blue, Kelly green and ivory color scheme that was already in the living room, adding more blue and lots of greenery, plus silver and gold.

“You want holiday décor to be subtle and beautiful and to enhance the space, rather than detract,” Kantrowitz explains. “I took the same approach as when we were designing the home, mixing casual elements with more sophisticated and elegant touches. For instance for the tree, we combined the casual burlap ribbon and wooden snowflakes with elegant pearl drops and feathered swan ornaments to give it balance.”

Kantrowitz artfully combined artificial and real greenery too. The garlands on the stairs and the mantel are faux, as is the tree, but the wreath is made of dried leaves, and vases of fresh flowers from Beers Flower Shop in Ridgewood dot end tables, the ottoman and the dining table. “Everything is going to look real if you mix the fake in with the real,” she explains.

Kantrowitz’s go-to stores for holiday décor include Anthropologie, Englewood’s Collections by id 810 Design Group, Frontgate, Home Goods, Restoration Hardware and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft. “I’m a big DIYer, so Jo-Ann’s is my haven,” she says. “I made the bow on the wreath and the tree garland from ribbon I got there. Plus all of the candles and some smaller accents like the pinecones were from Jo-Ann’s.”

And the homeowners are thrilled with the final result. “It’s absolutely gorgeous, and what I love about it is that it’s not the traditional red and green,” says Katie. “She brought in colors and fabrics that I wouldn’t have chosen myself, giving the house a cozy, gracious feel.”

On Christmas, Katie and Scott will relax with coffee and watch the kids open gifts before hosting both of their families for brunch. Being home that morning is another tradition that Katie hopes to continue.

“Growing up in Wayne, I would always have to leave after opening presents and go to Long Island where my mom’s family was from,” she recalls. “But I want my kids to be able to be home on Christmas morning. If everyone can come to us, I’ll be happy.” bergenmag.com

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” It’s a phrase that comes to mind after meeting Cliffside Park’s Daphne Oz, 30, a prolific food author and co-host of TV’s The Chew. And that’s fine with her—it means she’s already got you thinking about a food that’s both healthy and fun.

Daphne is the daughter of renowned cardiologist Mehmet (“Dr. Oz”), and like her father she spreads the gospel of good health. Eating right is key, of course, but to her that means foods that aren’t just beneficial, but enjoyable too.

“I refuse to eat food that is only fuel,” says Daphne.

The child of two published authors—mom Lisa is also a producer/actress—Daphne broke into print herself as a student at Princeton University in 2006 with The Dorm Room Diet, a book designed to help students avoid putting on the “freshman 15.”

She scored another best seller in 2013 with Relish: An Adventure in Food, Style and Everyday Fun, which combined recipes with career counsel, relationship tips and personal experiences. This fall she’s out with a new volume, The Happy Cook: 125 Recipes for Eating Every Day Like It’s the Weekend, which features everything from kale-and-plum salad to coconut-mango pancakes.

Daphne has made guest appearances on her dad’s The Dr. Oz Show—naturally—but also pops up on Good Morning America, The View, Fox & Friends, Good Day New York and The Rachael Ray Show. A frequent health lecturer and motivational speaker, she’s active with HealthCorps, a nonprofit organization she helped to establish that advises teens on nutrition, exercise, body image and stress. But her two favorite topics these days are Philomena (almost 3) and Jovan (age 2)—her kids. They kept popping up when BERGEN caught up with her recently for a wide-ranging chat—read on for more.

Yes! It’s the best. My kids are in paradise when they get to see their grandparents.

I’m there almost every weekend.

Is there anything you’ve learned from your parents that you hope to pass on to your children?

“Work hard and have fun!”

What do you remember from your days at Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood?

Amazing teachers—and lots of work. We took great field trips to study the Hudson River and cared for a “baby egg,” which is very different from having actual babies, as it turns out. I remember spending a couple of months researching a history project in which we had to act as a historical figure for a day. I was Cleopatra!

What are your favorite places to go to when you’re back in Bergen County?

Some of our standbys are Pier 115, Baumgart’s Café, Beyoglu, Istanbul Borek bakery and Three Star Bagels in Fort Lee. My old favorite—Bergen’s Best Bagels— shut down about 20 years ago, and I’m still pining for it.

What was Cliffside Park like as a place to grow up?

The best of both worlds. My parents chose it because of its proximity to my dad’s work at Columbia Presbyterian in New York. They wanted to be near the city but also give their kids space and a more laid-back growing-up experience.

Which three words best describe you?

Wife, mother, talker.

What do you love most about motherhood?

Morning cuddles and chatterbugs. My kids wake up extra talkative and loving in the mornings. I also love bedtime stories and hearing the crazy things that come out of our daughter Philomena’s mouth— she’s hysterical.

Given your hectic schedule, how do you achieve a work-family balance?

My sense of balance is always being recalibrated. Some weeks I feel like I’m working nonstop and missing time with my kids and husband. Other weeks I get to spend all day with them and take a break from the grind. The trick is to enjoy what you’re doing in that moment.

I try to get into my home kitchen most days, even if it’s just for 15 to 30 minutes.

Cooking relaxes me, and it lets me come back to center in a rewarding way.

As a writer and speaker on health, what’s your own big health concern?

Just trying to lose baby weight, slowly but surely. Food and cooking always feel like a celebration to me, and my goal is to find the balance where I can enjoy my food and get back to feeling strong in my body too. It’s a process. I follow my twobite rule on The Chew: the first bite is just to check out all the flavors going on.

The second is to really indulge.

What are your nutritional staples— and your guilty pleasures?

My kids and I have smoothies in the mornings as an insurance policy for the rest of the day. Theirs has yogurt, banana, avocado and spinach—sometimes I’ll add foods with essential fatty acids and vitamins C and D. Mine is a protein shake I blend up with all my vitamins and supplements.

I keep fresh flavor boosters on hand to dress up simple meals—homemade pesto or chopped fresh herbs with lemon zest, olive oil and some nuts or grated garlic. I make big batches of lentils or quinoa on the weekends that I can throw into recipes all week long, and we have a lot of lean protein. My guilty pleasures are homemade cookie dough, brownies à la mode, French fries and pizza.

Any foods you’ve banished from your life?

No. I don’t rule things out because they become taboo and have control over you.

What’s your exercise routine?

These days, most of my working out is chasing my children around. But when I get to a workout class, I love DanceBody and Ballet Beautiful. I also love to find old Steve Ross yoga routines on YouTube.

In a few words, what’s your new book’s mission?

To give people confidence in the kitchen with recipes guaranteed to make them look good.

What do you hope people remember about you and your TV show?

I hope seeing how much fun we have helps people get comfortable in the kitchen. We always talk about how lucky we are—we get paid to eat delicious food and hang out with great friends!

Try DAPHNE’s treats for the holidays Daphne Oz’s emphasis on healthy eating doesn’t rule out the occasional indulgence—especially during the holiday season. She shares two recipes her family favors.

CORN PUDDING “This one was given to us by one of my grandmother’s friends, and it’s pure decadence. Plan to make twice the recipe.”

Ingredients 1 (8.5-oz. box) Jiffy corn muffin mix (or vegetarian equivalent) 1 can cream-style corn 1 can corn niblets, drained ½ cup butter, melted 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup sour cream Directions Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Grease an 8-inch-by-10-inch pan with butter and pour in mixture. Bake at 350°F for 55–60 minutes. Serves 6.

CHRISTMAS BUTTER COOKIES “Our traditional Christmas cookies.

Perfect in every way!”

Ingredients 1 cup butter 1 cup, plus 1 Tb. sugar 1 large egg 1 tsp. baking powder 2 Tbs. orange juice 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2½ cups sifted flour Directions Mix first six ingredients with electric mixer until fluffy. Gradually stir in flour by hand until combined. If you use a cookie press, don’t chill dough.

Otherwise, wrap disks of dough in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator at least two hours. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thick and cut shapes with your favorite cookie cutters. Bake at 350°F for 8–10 minutes. Watch cookies—when they are golden around the edges, they’re done! Makes 50 small cookies.

When they ask where you got that (Grenada) tan, just smile. By Rita Guarna

Admit it: When you find an amazing restaurant or boutique you’re sometimes tempted to keep it to yourself lest it “go mainstream.”

That’s how I felt when I visited Grenada. Though it was spotted by Christopher Columbus on his third voyage in 1498, it’s not on many Caribbean travelers’ radar, so it’s unpretentious, rugged and real. How nice it would be to keep it that way.

I’d visited the island 100 miles north of Venezuela years ago and marveled at how relaxed I felt—even though that was the first (and so far, thankfully, only) time my luggage was lost. So recently when I was in dire need of a little R&R, I headed back, with plans to do nothing more than morning yoga, some vegging on the beach and a little sightseeing.

I found the perfect home-awayfrom-home at Laluna, a bohemianluxe resort on Morne Rouge Bay. Its 16 one- and two-bedroom cottages and villas are set in the hills amid 25 secluded acres, each cottage with its own private veranda and plunge pool. Designed by Gabriella Giuntoli, creator of Giorgio Armani’s villa on Panarea in the Aeolian Islands, the intimate bungalows feature open floor plans, thatched roofs and indoor/outdoor bathrooms. “It’s all about barefoot luxury,” explains Bernardo Bertucci, the resort’s owner and as unlikely a hotelier as you’ll ever meet. A 15-year fashionindustry marketing executive, he had no experience in the hospitality business, unless you count simply being from Italy. Working for brands including Prada, Armani and Bell

Logo, parent company of Tod’s, he fell in love with Grenada and decided that clothing the elite wasn’t so different from catering to their vacation needs. As a result, there are daily complimentary classes in yoga and meditation in a beachfront pavilion and an authentic Asian spa with Balinese therapists.

When I met Bernardo, he declared us paisanos—compatriots, more or less—as he’s from the same region, Calabria, as my father. But when he discovered that my mother hails from Sicily, he took to calling me Siciliana, a nickname that stuck during my visit. Unlike larger resorts, this one makes you feel like a treasured houseguest of a host who’s kind and gracious without being overly intrusive.

Then there’s the food. A beachfront Italian (natch) restaurant serves up Bernardo’s favorite dishes with ingredients flown in from his native land. These include tuna preserved in extra-virgin olive oil for 12 months, olive oil from the Bertucci family farm in Calabria, Parmesan cheese, tomatoes, olives (which are delicious!) and Pasta Conte, artisanal pasta from southern Italy, which is only available there.

To this mix, Bertucci adds local fish and Grenada’s spice bounty—not for nothing is this place known as “the spice island”; it’s a leading producer of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice and nutmeg. My favorite plates included an octopus salad with potatoes, chickpeas, sun-dried tomatoes and snap peas and olives; a chilled seafood salad loaded with

shrimp, calamari and scallops with olives and capers; and Grenadian spiced pumpkin soup, which was creamy without being heavy and had a nice ginger taste.

To wash down the great food, there’s a full bar. The resort’s signature drink, the Laluna Mist, is made from pineapple-lime slush, citrus vodka and blue Curaçao and is both pretty and tasty. In keeping with the Italian vibe, however, my drink of choice was a refreshing Aperol Spritz, a combo of prosecco with a splash of Aperol, a bitter liqueur, and club soda garnished with an orange. For those who’ve never tasted it, Aperol is akin to Campari but less bitter (and with far less alcohol).

Between the sunshine and the great food and drink, it’s easy to become a true sloth here— Grenadians like to “lime,” a verb that basically means “chill out”— but that would be a mistake. The 120-square-mile island boasts beautiful waterfalls (Seven Sisters Falls inside Grand Etang National Park is the one we visited), nutmeg factories, cocoa plantations and a rum distillery, and all are worth seeing. Or do as we did and check out the island from the sea. We set sail for a few hours aboard Savvy, a 43-foot sloop, which leaves St. George’s harbor. Go snorkeling at Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park and then take in one of the most gorgeous sunsets I’ve ever seen.

Keep Grenada secret? Ah, but the guilt would torment me. This place is too special not to share.

The island is amazing. We spent most days on a private beach enjoying the company of friends. Once we got to see the rest of the island, we fell in love. From the spice markets to the cacao farm to the historic airport where U.S. forces landed, the island was lovely.”

Tempura Duck Stuffed Mushrooms

Yield: 6 servings

n 3 cups tempura batter (see below) n ½ cup sweet soy sauce n 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil n 1 small daikon radish n 1 cup cranberry juice n 3 pieces large duck breasts, with skin n 6 large button mushrooms n 2 oz. cream cheese n 2 cups canola oil n 1 oz. alfalfa sprouts n 6 Tbs. orange marmalade n Salt and pepper, to taste

Combine all tempura ingredients in a large bowl (be sure to remove ice cubes from water) and mix well. Set aside in fridge.

FOR THE TEMPURA BATTER n 1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted n 1 egg n 1 cup ice-cold water (chilled with ice cubes)

Season both sides of the duck breasts with salt and pepper.

Add 1 teaspoon of olive oil to a sauté pan and heat on mediumhigh. Cook duck breasts, skinside down, for 10 minutes or until golden brown, then turn and cook for another 5 minutes; set aside to cool. Chop the cooked duck breasts into small pieces and add 3 tablespoons of sweet soy sauce and salt, to taste, for extra flavor.

Thinly slice the daikon and add to the cranberry juice to absorb the flavor; set aside.

Clean the mushrooms. Remove the gills and stems with a small spoon. Marinate the mushrooms in sweet soy sauce and olive oil, adding salt to taste; set aside.

Fill the rest of each mushroom with the chopped duck breast.

Remove the tempura batter from the fridge. In a large pan, heat the canola oil on medium-high.

Roll the stuffed mushrooms in the tempura batter and drop them into the oil, frying until golden brown. Remove and place on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.

Spread the alfalfa in the middle of a large plate and top with the mushrooms. Top each mushroom with 1 tablespoon of orange marmalade and sliced daikon; serve.

Red Bliss Potatoes with Caviar Yield: 4 servings

8 small red bliss potatoes 8 oz. sour cream Jar of high-quality caviar Salt and pepper, to taste Dill sprig (optional)

Directions

Hard-boil the potatoes for 10 minutes, then cool them in an ice bath. When cold, cut them in half and use a melon baller to scoop out half of the potato to form a cup. Deep-fry the potato cups until they’re golden and crispy.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon in sour cream to fill the potato cup and garnish with an espresso spoon–worth of caviar. Top off with a sprig of dill (optional). Serve hot.

Yield: 20 pieces

Ingredients

n 1 sheet puff pastry dough n 1 lb. hot Italian sausage, crumbled n 1 oz. butter n 1 oz. flour n Coarse sea salt n Mustard of choice

Directions

With a rolling pin, roll out the pastry dough into a square about 3 millimeters thick. Flour your surface to keep dough from sticking. Refrigerate the dough about 15 minutes until chilled and firm. Spread the crumbled sausage thinly on the puff pastry with an offset spatula, leaving a half-inch on each side uncovered.

Fold two sides of the square dough towards the center so they meet exactly at the middle of the dough.

Wrap log in plastic wrap and freeze for half an hour.

Preheat oven to 450°F. Take log out and slice into ¼-inch-wide pieces. Place slices onto a baking sheet. Melt butter and brush on top of pastry. Sprinkle lightly with sea salt and bake in oven about 8–10 minutes, until golden brown.

Cool on a baking rack.

Serve cold or warm with your favorite mustard

Braised Short Ribs With Chocolate Stout

Yield: 12 servings Bacari Grill, Washington Township Chef Peter Angelakos

Ingredients

n 6 lbs. boneless beef short ribs, trimmed and cut into 6-oz. pieces n Barbecue dry rub n 6 cloves garlic, minced n 2 carrots, roughly chopped n 1 onion, roughly chopped n 4 stalks celery, roughly chopped n 2 Tbs. tomato paste n 3 cups chocolate stout beer n 6 cups veal stock n 3 Tbs. vegetable oil n Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

Pat short ribs dry and season with barbecue rub (or instead with salt and pepper, if desired). In a heavy pot, heat oil over moderately high heat until hot and brown ribs in batches, transferring with tongs to a sheet pan.

Preheat oven to 325°F. Add chopped vegetables and garlic to pot and cook over moderate heat, stirring, until golden. Add beer, tomato paste and stock, and bring to a boil.

Season liquid with salt and pepper.

Add ribs, including any juices that have accumulated in pan, and bring to a simmer.

Cover and place in oven for 1½ to 2 hours or until meat is tender.

Transfer meat to a large sheet pan. Strain and simmer braising liquid, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened. Return meat to pot and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through.

Remove ribs and cut into smaller pieces. Serve over sautéed spinach and polenta, mashed potatoes, orzo or rice. Garnish with crispy onions and microgreens.

Ingredients

n ½ lb. sushi-grade tuna (#1 loin) n ½ lb. jumbo crabmeat, cooked n ¼ cup wasabi powder n 2 Tbs. mayonnaise, divided n ½ bag of frozen baby peas, thawed n ¼ cup dried wasabi peas n 1 bunch scallions n Sesame crackers

Directions

To prep: Slice the tuna paper-thin. Julienne the scallions. In a medium bowl, add enough water to the wasabi powder to reconstitute it and form a paste. Add 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise and combine well; set aside. Then purée the baby peas and mix in 1 tablespoon mayonnaise to create a pea jam; set aside.

To assemble: Arrange 10 crackers on a dish. Roll the crabmeat in the wasabi mayonnaise mixture and then place a generous amount on each cracker. Add one slice of tuna on top of the crabmeat. Add a dollop of the pea jam on top of the tuna slices.

For an added crunch, take a handful of dried wasabi peas and finely grind them; sprinkle on top. Garnish each piece with two scallion slices.

filling was tasty, but it was the doughy pillows that most impressed: paper-thin, they were slightly sweet and a perfect foil to the dipping sauce.

Fish is definitely a star here. A seafood combination of lobsters, shrimp, mussels calamari and clams in a red sauce served over linguine was very satisfying. For one thing, each elemental fish was cooked right, the linguine was al dente and the portion wasn’t skimpy. Our other entrée was one of the specials of the night: shrimp and crab stuffed sole, which was better than most I’ve tasted.

Rather than an overpowering amount of bread crumbs, this dish featured big chunks of crabmeat and shrimp and was both hearty and delicate. Served with whipped mashed potatoes and mixed veggies, the portion was big enough to take half home.

And that’s a good thing as dessert isn’t an afterthought here. Pumpkin pie à la mode was a special offering, and we couldn’t resist this nod to the season.

Light and creamy, we finished every last morsel. Ditto the apple tart served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, fresh whipped cream and drizzled with caramel. Apples were sliced thin and sat in the middle of a light flaky crust. Again, we had no choice but to clean the plate.

Will we return? You bet. This place has that inexplicable combination of serving good food and making you feel good too.

You’d have to visit Picco Tavern several times to sample the variety of dishes offered here: Italian specialties, seafood, pizza and burgers. And you might want to: The Hackensack eatery doesn’t only dish good food; it offers great service, a clubby décor and a homey feel. Not bad for a restaurant located on a street lined with high-rises.

This dining room-cum-bar-and-pianolounge was filled with patrons, many of whom not only seemed to know each other, but were greeted by name. Still as first-timers, we didn’t feel like interlopers.

Instead, we were welcomed with lavish attention (though not annoyingly so).

On the night we visited, a Saturday, the place was filled with older couples, young families and millennials getting together with friends.

Our servers were quick to fill our water glasses and fetch a breadbasket with piping hot, crispy bread and focaccia. And when we couldn’t decide which sauvignon blanc to select, the waiter was eager to confide his favorite.

For starters, we decided to order two appetizers and split them. I chose the grilled octopus, prepared with capers and garlic and served with fingerling potatoes and fennel salad. It was superb. This is a dish that many chefs don’t get right.

It’s often either a chewy, rubbery mess or undercooked. So having it turn out perfectly was a lovely surprise and almost had me wishing we hadn’t agreed to share. My companion chose the steamed chicken dumplings with a light soy sauce.

What is a dental laser, is it effective and will it eliminate pain?

[A] I’ve used dental lasers for over ten years in my practice.

I’ve seen how a laser can transform even the most fearful dental patient into an anxiety-free patient who loves coming to the dentist. It’s an alternative to the dental drill in many cases, and nine out of ten of our patients require little or no anesthesia, or simply a topical anesthetic gel, when treated using a dental laser.

Simply explained, a dental laser focuses a beam of light onto an area, but doesn’t touch the tissue. Just imagine having a cavity removed and restored with a new filling, all without the need for Novocain. A laser also replaces a scalpel in gum surgery, for example, quickly dissolving the problem while eliminating the need for sutures that patients typically have endured in the past.
