Around 200 whānau and invited guests gathered at Pāpāwai Marae on Friday 8 November to honour Robert Kinsela (Kim) Workman, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa/Rangitāne, who was named a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to prisoner welfare and the justice system, in the New Year Honours list, the first of his iwi to be knighted. The wānanga, with the theme ‘Nationhood and Identity’, commenced with a pōwhiri for arriving guests at 9.00am and later, the Governor General, Dame Patsy Reddy, and her party were welcomed with a pōwhiri. Murray Hemi, MC for the day, commenced proceedings with an introduction to the day. Dame Patsy delivered a short address that covered pre-European history of New Zealand; Crown/Māori relationships and events in Wairarapa that included the ceding of Wairarapa Moana to the Crown; the Māori Parliament at Pāpāwai; and the

development of the first sheep station in New Zealand, established at Wharekaka, south Wairarapa. Tā Kim gave an in-depth, often entertaining, account of his formative years, of growing up in Greytown and identifying with Pāpāwai Marae, his turangawaewae, the centre of his universe, where he felt protected. His public service career, spanning four decades, included the Police; the Office of the Ombudsman; State
