Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua Care for the land, care for the people, look to the future. The pukaea sounded the start for tohunga and church ministers to commence their karakia. Three years in the making and a three year wait to finally hear the waerea karakia for six papakainga homes. There was a jubilant sigh of relief because we did have our detractors and the pukaea silenced them all. Built on Marae reserve land, whānau, hapū and Marae from throughout Wairarapa and afar, assembled along with dignitaries at Te Ara Takapau, the name of the road entrance that leads into the papakainga homes. “Despite a wet start to proceedings, there was an assembly of multi-coloured brollies
and it was nice to hear whānau catching up with each other and this is what papakainga is all about,” said Henare Manaena, “to bring whānau home to live in safe, warm and healthy affordable rental homes and to help reinvigorate our Marae community”. These are the first papakainga homes to be built in Wairarapa and the first to be built on Marae reserve land. The six homes are made up of two two-bedroom homes and four three-bedroom homes and were built with a $1.6million investment from Te Puni Kōkiri Māori Housing Network and a
