Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua Care for the land, care for the people, look to the future.

The pukaea sounded the start for tohunga and church ministers to commence their karakia. Three years in the making and a three year wait to finally hear the waerea karakia for six papakainga homes.

There was a jubilant sigh of relief because we did have our detractors and the pukaea silenced them all. Built on Marae reserve land, whānau, hapū and Marae from throughout Wairarapa and afar, assembled along with dignitaries at Te Ara Takapau, the name of the road entrance that leads into the papakainga homes.

“Despite a wet start to proceedings, there was an assembly of multi-coloured brollies

and it was nice to hear whānau catching up with each other and this is what papakainga is all about,” said Henare Manaena, “to bring whānau home to live in safe, warm and healthy affordable rental homes and to help reinvigorate our Marae community”.

These are the first papakainga homes to be built in Wairarapa and the first to be built on Marae reserve land. The six homes are made up of two two-bedroom homes and four three-bedroom homes and were built with a $1.6million investment from Te Puni Kōkiri Māori Housing Network and a

“It certainly wasn’t an easy straightforward process,” said Henare. “There were many challenges along the way and at times bureaucratic interpretations got in the way of good judgement. But we learnt a lot and so did some of the agencies that we were dealing with. Any degree of frustration would have seen many give up. But we persevered and met each challenge head on. And that’s because we had a darn good team of fearless supporters and strategic thinkers. Oh yeah!

We had a darn good lawyer too that knew how to rattle the chains,” said Henare.

In the past, Hurunui-o-Rangi was a thriving papakainga community with the old Māori church nearby and garden cultivations on the banks of te awa Makahakaha.

Tikanga and customary practices and beliefs were normal interactions that our whānau lived by every day but that all changed when between 1948 and 1954, land was taken under the Public Works Act to build a new road that cut right through the middle of the papakainga community. It was a destructive injustice that saw whānau move away to neighbouring towns.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you all.

But a small handful of whānau kept the fires burning because the seed to revitalise Hurunui-o-Rangi as a thriving community was planted many years before by our kuia, koroua and kaumātua. So, it was the small handful that embarked on a mission to nurture the seed to fruition, to once more live under the protective shadow of te maunga tapu Maungarake and under the protective gaze of our kaitiaki, te ngarara Parikouiti. Hurunui-o-Rangi have their own stories about mokomoko (lizards), of romance and conquest and are surrounded by landmarks and old pa sites that all have their own stories that will be shared with our mokopuna.

Te Ara Takapau papakainga will once more embrace those cultural practices from the past that will help strengthen us as a people with an identity and a sense of belonging that will go unchallenged. The next generation will grow up in a healthy supportive environment of cultural learning and understanding with the ability to participate in Marae affairs with confidence.

“There are so many people and organisations that we want to thank, and their acknowledgement will be the homes that will stand as a tribute to the many that made it possible,” said Henare. “We have started the planning for our new Marae build and come December we hope to see some progress.

Oh, I forgot to mention! We have clean healthy drinking water now!”

The response from whānau and visitors that walked through the homes was one of envy and appreciation, determination and attitude and as one aunty asked. “Share your knowledge with us. Help us to have what you have.” Hurunui-o-Rangi will certainly answer the call when needed.

Locally registered community housing provider, Trust House, will manage the homes and application process and will liaise with Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae trustees as kaitiaki for the whenua and all structures and buildings.

4th International Indigenous Economic Development Forum Ni hao! I pay my respect to Minister Council of Indigenous Peoples, Icyang Parod, who was the host for the 4th International Indigenous Economic Development Forum.

Wairarapa Moana Incorporation (WMI) was invited to attend and present at the 4th International Indigenous Economic Development Forum, 9-11 Whiringā-a-Rangi, in Hualien, Taiwan. The Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP) hosts the forum. CIP strives to promote various economic and industrial development policies. This year the CIP invited three countries – Aotearoa, Canada and Malaysia to share their economic success; increase opportunities to communicate between international companies and promote mutual exchange and co-operation.

The Taiwanese people are very humble. There are 23 million people, 4.6 million of them live in Taipei, the capital. The major industries in Taiwan are electronics, petroleum refining and machinery. Taiwan’s coal reserves were largely exhausted by the beginning of the 21st century. Small reserves of petroleum and natural gas have been found on the island and offshore and have been exploited. Taiwan is largely driven by industrial manufacturing and export of electronics and machinery. The ethnic groups of Taiwan are roughly: Taiwanese 84%, mainland Chinese 14% and the indigenous peoples are 2%. There are 16 tribes in Taiwan.

At the forum there were 150 attendees. There was a large contingent of New Zealanders; Manuka Honey – Owhaoko, Manuka Honey Mana Kai, Naoi Workforce, Footprint Waipoua tourism, Māori Women’s Development Incorporation, Agribusiness Ngāti Pahauwera, and the Indigenous Taiwan-NZ Business Council (ITANZBC). We all had interpreters who were rangatahi. They looked after us day and night. They truly know how to manaaki people.

The food was amazing and the people were very kind.

The Taiwanese people believe that we are related; that our ancestors came through Taiwan so our relationship is considered very special.

One day we went on an agricultural experience: • Ecological park of Hua Dong Tribe looking at non-toxic agriculture; • Taiwan Happy Farm looking at their non-toxic farm; • Pangcah farm located at Gungfu Township at the foot of Maxi mountain irrigated by Matai’an River’s pure water basic farm production; teaches tribal youth.

I was asked to talk about how the relationship between WMI and Miraka works and how both business’s brand is guided

by Māori beliefs.

The Wairarapa Moana logo, nurturing our taonga, uniquely identifies us and our history. The design and colours are synonymous with who we are as Wairarapa Moana and where we come from, and our future. The two points at the top of the logo represent Pukeamoamo and Pukeahurangi.

The blue at the bottom of the logo is Wairarapa Moana; and the kaitiaki (guardian) in the middle is Te Wheke. Wairarapa moana is the kainga, home of Te Wheke, our taniwha.

The logo of Miraka is Tauihu – the prow, the front symbolised to pave the way ahead; to lead the way forward; cutting edge. The Tauihu (prow) of the waka is symbolic of our seafaring ancestors who set out into uncharted waters through the Pacific and on to Aotearoa. It led the way to new business opportunities and networks around the world. The Miraka brand is represented by the face of a kaitiaki (guardian), body of Papatuanuku (Earth mother) and Ranginui (Sky father) which highlights our connected relationship with one another and our natural world. This symbolises the strong emphasis Miraka places on its responsibility as a guardian of resources.

Our key messages were: • we understand each other, we share similar values and philosophies • we are indigenous, we are a Māori business • culture defines our people, our place, our future We see ourselves, Wairarapa Moana Incorporation and Miraka, as stakeholders in Aotearoa’s natural and cultural assets, market leaders and innovators in high-value products, services and experiences.

Whakamaru Whenua To nurture sustainably and profitably our taonga and resources for current and future generations.

As tangata whenua (people of this land) we have a responsibility to

leave the mauri (or capacity) of the land in a better state than when we received it.

That is, to do no harm. The Committee of Management has had an opportunity recently to revise its Kaitiaki Strategy and to extend its integration into WMI business and people.

Kaitiakitanga is the foundation principle upon which WMI operates. We have a role to preserve the life-giving potential (Mauri-Tu) of the whenua as well as enhance the wellness and well-being (Mauri Ora) of the bio-physical and metaphysical elements of our whenua. Our revised kaitiaki plan, Whakamaru Whenua, identifies what WMI can do to protect and improve our land, its environment and its communities. It requires that kaitiakitanga principles be incorporated in all aspects of planning and decision-making processes. Further, as a practice, it ensures kaitiakitanga is consistently reflected in our day-to-day activities.

The basic three principles of kaitiakitanga are: Tangata (people); Taiao (natural environment); and Taurikura/ tonuitanga (prosperity). These principles intersect to provide three further key principles: Tohungatanga (People development); Te Tini o Tane (Biodiversity); and Tuturutanga (Sustainability).

Meantime, WMI has the following key tasks ahead: • Embed water quality and water efficiency principles and establish run-off, nutrient and waste management practices across all its operations.

• Review farming operations to reduce chemical and fertiliser use, material waste and protect soil health and structure.

• Establish land retirement, replanting and riparian management plans.

• Develop a farm modelling system to calculate the economic and environmental consequences brought about by changes to our water quality, water quantity, and waste management practices.

• Determine the benefits of technologies that improve water efficiency, water quality, and nutrient & sediment retention.

Whakamaru Whenua will ensure WMI considers all of these aspects in its future direction. What will this mean for the future of WMI? Like all dairy producers we now need to start seriously considering the long-term (30-50 year) future of dairy/agriculture. There may be some big changes ahead for our business especially as we begin to examine other forms of protein production and land use (e.g. plant milks – almond, macadamia, hazelnut, cashew; fruit trees; bio-fuels; or carbon sequestration). As a committee we need to start thinking about the future now. If the world and the environment is changing we need to be ahead of the change and leading the charge not following the pack.

• Adopt an extensive planting regime for the farming blocks for short-term soil regeneration, biodiversity, and as offset options for WMI’s dairy and forestry operations.

POUTAMA GRANT RECIPIENT 2017-2018

WAI 85 to be decided by Waitangi Tribunal I would like to thank all shareholders and whānau who registered with the Settlement Trust, and got out and voted.

As you will all know by now, there was majority support for Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki Nui-a-Rua Settlement Trust signing the proposed Deed of Settlement on behalf of the iwi.

Voter turnout was 33.31% of all eligible voters.

Many of us strongly believe that this treaty settlement process does not resolve our claim Wai 85 Pouākani lands. Throughout the six week ratification process we made our views clear. The Government should be left in no doubt that Wairarapa Moana Incorporation and Wai 85 Pouākani lands oppose the Deed of Settlement.

We have also put the Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki Nuiā-Rua Settlement Trust on notice. They need to take the wellbeing of our taonga, Wairarapa Moana, much more seriously. With the return of the lakebed of Wairarapa Moana comes the responsibility of restoring the health and wairua of our taonga.

Our path though, remains unchanged.

The 2010 Waitangi Tribunal Report Wairarapa ki Tararua was highly critical of the amount of compensation paid to Wairarapa Moana owners in the 1950s for the land taken for the Maraetai Dam. The Waitangi Tribunal described the compensation as “niggardly in the extreme1,” compared to the value that the Crown has derived over the last 70 years, which is in the billions.

The economic report prepared by Dr Richard Meade, Principal Economist with Cognitus Economic Insight, as part of our evidence to the Waitangi Tribunal, quantified Wairarapa Moana owner losses in relation to the Maraetai Dam to be $1,500 million to $2,500 million.

Our application for the return of land around the Maraetai Dam is currently scheduled to be heard by the Waitangi Tribunal the week commencing 17 December 2018. If our application is successful, then either we reach a settlement with the Crown, or the Crown is required to implement the Waitangi Tribunal recommendations.

Marlene Whaanga-Dean – Certificate in Public Health I would like to express my humble gratitude to Wairarapa Moana Trust for supporting my studies financially at Massey University for 2017-18 in Public Health promotions. I graduated at the end of November in Palmerston North.

This tohu has opened a few doors in terms of governance groups, that I can represent Māori at a consumer level and make sure our voice is heard. I am passionate about our people in our rōpū, and their wellbeing. I also encourage all Māori to take the leap into studies, whatever that might be.

This has been my journey in the last twelve months plus working full-time/whānau. It has been exciting and challenging but certainly growing in my role at Whaiora and on consumer councils.

Thinking of my parents/grandparents — Here is my whakaaro  Marlene is an outreach community health worker for a non-Government organisation. She describes whānau and Community Health as her purpose and passion.

Marlene’s profile can be viewed on the Massey University website when searching the Certificate in Public Health information.

Marlene is excited about her role on the Wairarapa DHB Health Consumer Council and is also a member of the Health Quality & Safety Commission New Zealand.

Marlene has a background in social work and is dedicated to making health services more accessible for consumers and whānau in the Wairarapa.

Early Friday evening, October 26, shareholders arrived for the pōwhiri at Papawai Marae. Time allowed a catch up with friends and whānau over dinner and then shareholder registrations began.

Tiraumaera Te Tau presented the education portfolio with a recap on the different types of funding available. A presentation of the scholarship wānanga held in July was well received.

The Performance Report for the year ended 31 May 2018 was presented by Anaru Smiler. Amy Kerr and Associates were approved as Reviewer of the Financials for 2018/2019; and the 2017 Minutes were passed with no amendments or matters arising.

Raumahora Waata provided an overview on Marae Development for the year and spoke about the insurance meeting with t¯i puna marae and the Māori-owned insurance brokerage firm, KIRO. This proved to be successful for one of the t¯i puna marae who made the transition to KIRO. Deborah, and Rutu Namana, presented the Wairarapa Moanatanga portfolio, covering both the CD and Lake Book.

Rutu, facilitator and participant of the Whakakaha Paepae Te Pou Pūmau programme, presented this section while reaffirming the Trust’s cultural provision to shareholders and whānau. The two whakakaha paepae programmes, ‘Te Reo Karanga’ and ‘Te Pou Pūmau’ had progressed well and

There were two vacancies to the Board of Trustees due to the rotation of Anaru Smiler and Tiraumaera Te Tau. An election was required as four nominations were received.

All nominees were invited to address the meeting. Voting took place by show of hands and we welcome back both Anaru and Tiraumaera.

Due to a lack of time to discuss General Business, shareholders were asked if there were any issues and none were raised. Whānau were given the opportunity to speak with trustees during lunch or contact the office if they wanted any issue considered.

PRE-AGM ROADSHOWS 2018 The Wairarapa Moana Incorporation meeting commenced at 12:45pm with a welcome from Chairman Kingi Smiler.

The election to the Committee of Management was the first agenda item. As there was only one nomination received for one vacancy, the appointment of Murray Hemi was confirmed.

TeHoripo Karaitiana, Murray Hemi and Sonya Rimene presented the Business Update with an outline of the vision and values statements, the strategic plan and provided a comprehensive review of the year’s activities.

Notification was provided for the 2018 roadshows via Facebook, the Mailer, a letter to shareholders in the specific regions and information on the website. Thank you to shareholders and whānau who indicate their attendance as this helps to estimate numbers for the venue and catering.

While we realise there may be situations beyond your control, a call to the office if circumstances change is appreciated.

Thank you to all who attended and supported the roadshows.

Michael Allan presented the Incorporation’s accounts as audited by Crowe Horwath. A number of questions were responded to before the accounts were adopted.

Kingi Smiler presented the proposed dividend as recommended by the Committee of Management. A total gross dividend of $1,250,000 inclusive of Māori Authority Tax Credits was approved unanimously.

Anne Carter provided an update on the Wai 85 Treaty Claim specific to the Pouākani lands. A recap of the timeline from February 2017 was provided, culminating with the urgent remedies hearing, granted by the Waitangi Tribunal, due to be heard in December 2018.

The Auditor and Share Valuer were re-appointed for another year; the minutes of the 2017 annual general meeting and the 2018 special general meeting were approved; and the 2019 AGM will be held on October 19th at Mangakino.

A number of items of General Business were received from the floor and responded to. The Committee of Management was complimented on the work that it is doing, meeting the challenges of future significant changes pending in the environmental and farming sectors.

The Chairman expressed his appreciation and acknowledged the technical team, the office team and Committee of Management members for their support.

The meeting concluded at 2:45pm with karakia.

He mihi aroha ki a rātou mā kua riro ki tua o Paerau. Hoki wairua atu ki te Huihuinga o te Kahurangi. E moe i te moenga roa. Haere atu koutou ki ngā ringaringa poipoi a Te Atua.

Ki a tātau te hunga ora e noho nei i waenganui i ngā pitopito o tēnei marae, o ngā Marae maha o te rohe nei, Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa!

Ka huri ake, he mihi tautoko mō ngā kōrero kua whakawhiti ano ki runga i te tuhinga o tēnei Rīpōata, me kī, ngā mahi me ngā putea o tēnei o tātau, Ngā Tau e Waru, Te Ore Ore Marae.

It has been a year of challenges, particularly in the upkeep of the Marae maintenance services. Due to an increase in Marae bookings/activities it has become pertinent that our current sewerage management is not coping and our septic tank constantly needs attention. This has seen an increase in call-outs to professional services to address the problem, requiring the immediate despatch of a sucker truck, which uses up what monies we have received, by way of Marae bookings/hireage. It will continue to be an ongoing issue until an affordable solution is found and will ultimately require some serious financial input.

Masterton District Council has always been of great assistance to our Marae, not only through their bookings for their activities, but also for the support that they have provided by way of Marae development funding. This is one way in which we have been able to refresh our Marae. We are currently in the process of our Marae building project with MDC’s generosity and acceptance of our application to the MDC Marae Development Grant 2017.

Wairarapa Moana Trust has been another great financial support to our Marae not only by way of Marae Development funding but also contributing to the Marae through wānanga to give personal development to Kai Karanga and our Kai Korero for paepae. Our April 2018 application for Marae

Development funding was recently accepted by Wairarapa Moana Trust to replace our meat chiller. This project is currently being worked through with the contractor.

The Order of St John on 21st March 2018 presented our Marae with a portable heart defibrillator unit. This is due in thanks to our whānau, Waka Rimene, who is a member of the Order of St John. This was a much needed koha from St John.

Thank you to Waka and Stephen Dennett who provided onsite training to those of us fortunate to attend. The invitation is also available for St John to return and train other whānau in the use of the defibrillator.

Te Rangiura o Wairarapa: Congratulations for their successful placing in Te Matatini 2019. We wish them well in the competition and future endeavours.

Matariki 2018 was celebrated at our Marae with a high tea for our kaumātua. This was a great mid-morning get together to celebrate and honour our kaumātua/whānau and friends who have contributed their time and assistance over the decades, in maintaining our Marae and welcoming our manuhiri/ whānau home to Te Ore Ore. A great many thanks to all who supported this occasion, especially those who assisted with the many tasks to ensure it flowed. A special mention to our rangatahi who served and ushered, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa, alongside matua, Mike Kawana, who provided our entertainment, Wairarapa Māori Wardens, Ngāti Poneke Māori Arts, Rangitāne o Wairarapa, and all those who helped to make this a special and memorable day for our pakeke.

I should not forget to mention Mr Bob Hooker who, armed with his camera, came on behalf of the NZ Police to cover the occasion and take photos throughout the day.

Finally, thank you to our aunties and the hard-working members of our Marae committee, our Te Ore Ore Marae whānau and NKMOW/rangatahi for helping our Marae stay afloat.

Papawai Pa 2018 Update Winter is nearly over! The weather has certainly been quite pleasant recently and it’s a joy to see daffodils and other spring flowers starting to bloom.

First and most importantly, we would like to acknowledge all of the past trustees of Papawai Pa who have given tirelessly and whole heartedly to the Marae.

a Wairarapa Moanatanga grant to continue the Whakakaha Paepae programme to hold whaikōrero wānanga. Next year we will be looking at holding more wānanga for our uri.

2018 brought a new set of trustees, five new trustees and two re-elected trustees: Elizabeth Hemi; Kahura Watson; Liz Watson; John Cunningham; Michele Elliott; Amiria Te Whaiti; Pikitia Tuuta.

At the beginning of the year trustees were adamant that we would ask whānau what they wanted for Papawai Pa and we soon realised that 2018 was the final year of the five-year Strategic Plan. This allowed us to create a new strategy and in September 2018 we held a two-day wānanga and invited whānau to attend. Discussions included the whakapākōkō, the wharekai, financial sustainability and a review of the Strategic Plan. This was an extremely successful weekend and we would like to thank all whānau for their attendance and input.

Many pathways had been laid down for us to pick up and work with. The first four months were spent learning about our Marae and how best we can function as one unit while moving forward together. There were many highs and many lows, and there was always ‘something’ that would pop up, nevertheless we had to quickly reflect and keep moving forward. We do not always agree with each other and this works for us, it keeps us accountable. What we do have in common with each other is the desire to give to our pa and its uri.

The first part of the year was to increase our bookings to build our finances, like many marae, we rely on bookings to pay our monthly financial commitments. We were also fortunate to receive two grants from Wairarapa Moana Trust, one was from Marae Development funding and the other was

To all the whānau of the trustees, without your patience and reliability you have given to each and every one of us, we would not have been able to reflect and learn from our highs and lows.

We all still have so much more to give and 2019 will be an exciting year for the Papawai uri……Te Kotahitanga!!

WMT Chair’s Report The Trust has had another successful year and another well-received presentation at the AGM. The Trust had a great turnout this year. We were fortunate to have four nominations to the Board; It’s been a while since the Trust has gone to a vote. We welcome Anaru Smiler and Tiraumaera Te Tau back to the Trust.

Highlights this year would be the scholarship recipients’ wānanga held in Mangakino earlier this year.

The other exciting project has been recording of the whakangahau waiata, a collection of waiata from the six t¯i puna marae and other Wairarapa specific waiata. In June this year the Trust contracted Makuini Kerehi to produce this resource for Wairarapa Moana, to strengthen Wairarapa Moanatanga.

Makuini has met with Marae representatives, interviewed composers, met with a range of performers, and engaged professionals to capture and record waiata. It has been a privilege for Makuini to lead this project.

“The kōrero has been interesting and a pleasure to capture.

I have been grateful for the willingness of the composers to not only share their kōrero but also modestly agree for waiata that they have written to be part of this project, deeming it an honour.” This resource will be available to whānau and shareholders through YouTube and Spotify. The need to produce a limited number of DVDs for kaumātua has also been discussed.

The aim is to release one waiata per week starting December 2018. Please like the Wairarapa Moana Facebook page to keep up with what waiata is being released each week.

WMI Shareholder Appointed to Orchestra Wellington Board Wairarapa Moana shareholder, Raymond Ahipene-Mercer, has recently been elected to chair Orchestra Wellington, becoming the first Māori to chair an orchestra in New Zealand.

Musician, guitar-maker, environmental activist, politician, are the themes that have been central to Raymond’s life.

Raymond is Māori on his mother’s side, Ngāi Tara; Ngāti Ira; Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāi Tahu, and Welsh on his father’s side. Raymond lives in Breaker Bay, Wellington, adjacent to one of his Pa, Rangitatau.

Educated in the Hutt Valley, he began a successful music career there as a guitarist/singer with 1969 Loxene Golden Disc finalists, The Dedikation, who charted at number 2 that year with “Wait For Me Maryanne”.

London beckoned him in 1972, soon after his marriage to Christine Viggars.

Playing the London pub scene was a huge learning curve as was establishing links with his Welsh family. Raymond met guitar-makers during that period and honed his skills on this pathway while also working as a guitar technician at the famous Andy’s Guitar Workshop in central London. There, he worked in guitars for the elite of British and American band industry: Led Zeppelin; Chrissie Hynde; Roxy Music; The Jam and many others. Raymond returned to New Zealand in 1981 after his wife died.

After establishing a studio/workshop at his home in Breaker Bay, he co-led the Wellington Clean Water Campaign (1984) to force the Wellington City Council to stop discharging untreated sewage into the south coast.

He took the first Wellington Waitangi Tribunal Claim (Wai 26) against the council as part of the campaign. The city council lost the battle during the elections of 1987 and, eventually, New Zealand’s highest-level treatment plant (tertiary) was built.

Raymond then shifted his energies to Little Blue Penguin conservation and organised twenty-plus years of native plant restoration on the coast. He was recognised for his efforts in 1990, receiving the 1990 Commemorative Medal.

In 2000 he was approached to stand in a by-election for Wellington City Council and was successful. For twelve of the sixteen years there he held the arts portfolio and was able to strongly influence the “arts and cultural capital” status of the city.

In 2016, Raymond decided to step back from politics and return to his guitar studio and play music again.

Farm update

Education Funding 2019

Season to date, the farms milk production is 2.8% ahead of budget and 1.2% ahead of last season. In comparison, the Miraka supplier base is 0.87% ahead year-to-date.

Scholarships are available to descendants of an original Wairarapa Moana owner.

Criteria is applied to all funding.

Future Leaders Scholarships Ngā Kete o Te Wānanga – Tertiary Scholarships are targeted at students studying a diploma, degree, Masters or PhD. Ngā Mahi ā-Rehe – Trade Training & Apprenticeship Scholarships are provided to those studying and working towards a trade or an apprenticeship.

Poutama Grant Funding These grants are provided to allow whānau to undertake a course of training that will assist them to take the next step in their careers. This could include either further training or employment opportunities.

We are now in a situation where pasture growth exceeds cow demand so we are busy conserving feed as surpluses appear to enable us to feed the cows later in the season when pasture growth slows down.

Te Kete Uruuru Tau Scholarships

A key focus for the farm teams in October is mating, which began on 23rd October and most farms have hit or exceeded their mating targets to date. Bulls will go out with the cows in early December following artificial breeding for six-weeks and the farm team is having a bull handling training session in mid-November to give them the skills and confidence to deal with bulls on farm.

Two special scholarships available to various fields within agri-business.

We also hosted two Chinese organisations associated with Miraka promoting the Miraka Taupo Pure branded milk powder. Farm 3 along with Denis, Khardinn and Gene performed a mihi and showcased pasture-based top quality milk. The live stream went to 500,000 Chinese and Miraka had 80 buy-now hits in one minute. A unique moment from pasture to plate, all on WMI Farm 3 with Miraka marketing staff in attendance.

Farm 14 was acknowledged for its outstanding Te Ara Miraka result last season achieving 100% and each team member was presented with a taonga.

Arik and his team were honoured to receive this award and the wider WMI team was proud to see hard work and success rewarded. WMI farms took out three of the top ten Te Ara Miraka awards at the Miraka Supplier dinner in July.

Scott Lloyd has been busy at Kaharoa dairy support farm planting trees as part of a project fencing off unproductive areas of the farm. 6,500 trees consisting of a dozen different native species have been planted over a 3.5 hectare area in the last two months with some help from a local school. There is a plan to plant a further 15 hectares over the next three years. Because the areas being planted are unproductive, the livestock numbers have been able to be increased at the same time as retiring land.

Shareholder Bank Account Details Payment of dividends to shareholders living in New Zealand is made by way of Direct Credit to shareholders’ bank accounts.

A Direct Credit Account Form is available from the office if you need to provide new bank account details because you have changed your bank or your account has been closed.

Bank account details are required to be verified by the bank. The office cannot accept bank account numbers over the phone, fax, email or written by letter.

Shareholders living overseas will be paid by cheque unless the shareholder holds a New Zealand bank account and elects to have the dividend paid into the New Zealand bank account. Cheques must be presented at the bank within six months of the date of issue.
