Our wonderful, precious mother Zoe Ward (nee Workman) celebrated her 100th birthday on 12th June 2018.

Zoe Workman was born in Martinborough on the 12th June 1918. She was raised with her older sibling sisters – Ruby, Joyce, Phoebe and Mavis and a younger brother, Ivan. An older brother, Roy, sadly passed away at an early age.

She attended school in Carterton and walked to school every day rain, hail and sunshine. In her younger days Zoe loved her pushbike and went with her friends everywhere they wanted to go and spent many happy days at the local swimming pool. Although times were hard in the 1920s and 30s, their hardworking parents always had food on the table and the children always had good clothes to wear.

Her father, Henry Workman, passed away when she was a teenager, meaning the struggle was not made any easier but they remained strong and worked together as a family.

Zoe worked in Carterton for a Chinese family in Jo Brothers general store and later at Wards general store where she met her husband-to-be, Albert Ward. They were married in 1938 and lived on the Ward farm at Parkvale where they raised their daughters, Shirley, Heather, Christine and Jillian.

In 1960 they moved up North and purchased a farm at Hukatere, North Auckland. On retiring from the farm in 1972 they moved to Puriri Park Road, Whangarei. Albert passed away in 1984 and Zoe stayed on in the same home until last year, 2017.

Happy Birthday Zoe She is now living with her daughter, Christine and Bruce Leaf on their family farm at Matakohe, North Auckland.

Although Mum’s birthday was on the 12th of June, she is the last of her generation and so there were many that wanted to be with her and over an extended period she enjoyed sharing her birthday celebration with as many family and friends as possible. She received birthday greetings from the Queen, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy, Seniors Minister, the

Our first celebration was held in April for the Ward side of the family on a beautiful day at Lang’s beach, south of Waipu. Mum was surrounded by all our close cousins and their children and the occasion was perfectly timed with the arrival of a cousin from America.

All our Workman cousins know mum as ‘Aunty Bub’. She was the youngest sister and we celebrated her birthday with everyone in May at Christine and Bruce Leaf’s family home.

The day was slightly cooler but with a marquee on site to keep us all warm, it turned out to be a wonderful day with all the cousins and their children.

The third celebration was held at one of her granddaughter’s home in Whangarei for her friends from Mahjong groups and golfing mates. There aren’t so many left now but mum enjoyed having them together with her for a quiet party.

The finale was her fourth more boisterous party with all her family. Her two remaining daughters and their husbands, along with her 6 grandchildren and spouses and not forgetting 13 of her great-grandchildren and her 4 greatgreat grandchildren made the day very special for her. But the arrival of granddaughter Heather and her children all the way from Denmark made her birthday celebration even more special.

We held this at Matakohe house in North Auckland and of course most of her guests travelled up from the Wairarapa for the occasion. It was a very proud moment for all of us to celebrate mum’s birthday with all her family and friends and relatives.

Footnote: Zoe’s older sister Mavis Rae Dew celebrated her 100th birthday that featured on the front page of the June 2011 Wairarapa Moana Mailer – Issue 22. Zoe appeared in the same photo with her sister Mavis.

WMI doesn’t have too many shareholders that celebrate 100yrs and for two sisters to have reached the ripe old age is something worth boasting about. A remarkable milestone for both sisters.

A Walk Down Memory Lane The photographer was Douglas Jones circa 1915 – 1925 and may have had a studio in Kaiapoi. The photo is part of the Enoka Collection at Wairarapa Archive. The photo is an outdoor portrait of a young Māori man dressed in what appears to be a shipping company uniform.

Hanging from his lapel appears to be a pocket watch.

The name Mr R. Turei has been written on the back over the photographer’s stamp.

Wairarapa Moana Te Kete Hautū Wānanga – Pouākani Marae, Mangakino

It had been some time since the Trust had held a Wairarapa Moana Wānanga for their scholarship recipients. The last wānanga was 2014 and it was important for the Trust to have it this year.

It started on a bleak winter day with approximately sixty people in attendance at the pōwhiri at Pouākani Marae in Mangakino. We were well supported by some of our kaikaranga wāhine and the whaikōrero tāne who were past ākonga from Whakakaha Paepae. There were up to twenty five recipients and their whānau who attended the wānanga.

Our first day included whakawhanaungatanga by introducing ourselves, and for our recipients it was an opportunity to learn what others were studying, learn the history of the Marae led by Leanne Karauna, who also detailed the history of Wairarapa Moana, an introduction of each of the trustees and staff, what they do, and for some students they got to meet our Secretary-Manager Dallas and thank her personally for her assistance. There was a fantastic presentation by Jefferson Dew, our only recipient who received Te Kete Uruuru Tau scholarship.

It was a first for many of us, albeit the first for those to visit Mangakino, first for those to meet the Wairarapa Moana Trust and staff, first for a Marae stay, first opportunity to find out the history of Wairarapa Moana and why, as one recipient commented, it was the first time they understood why Wairarapa was in Mangakino and how they connected to a place that helped support their study.

Presentations of a kete to each successful recipient rounded the day off. There was a real sense that they had felt the historical grievances of those who had suffered at the hands of the Crown and they wanted to know more. It was then they were given a Wairarapa Moana book that many began to read. They had a real hunger for knowledge which is encouraging to see from our next generation of future leaders.

It was encouraging to see the next generation of recipients and whānau get to know each other, have fun, work with each other over activities, learn the story of the township, Marae and of course Wairarapa Moana, and finding their own connection through whakapapa.

This was also a great opportunity for all the recipients to feedback to the Trust on some of the issues they also face, the importance of digital technologies to reach their demographic and for those mature students to share with the rangatahi their own experiences. The hospitality, the food and warmth of the whare were definitely highlights for those who attended as well.

We also had kōrero from parents and whānau that wanted to have the opportunity to thank the Trust for having the scholarships available to their whānau as this assisted in helping them support their whānau with their study expenses where many had to travel or live away from their own whānau.

Up early the next day following a hearty breakfast, we all boarded the bus for the farm visit. Nick Hume and the farm management team were on hand to give each of us a tour of the milksheds and learn more about the core business of Wairarapa Moana. There were some that had never been on a farm before so this was a new experience. We all ended the visit at the woolshed where we were given a packed lunch and presentations by Nick and Committee of Management Director, Te Horipo Karaitiana.

Overall this wānanga has lit the flame for many of our recipients who wanted to ensure that they can give back in some way to Wairarapa Moana. A view the current trustees wanted to encourage was that, in time, to also think about how they could be on the Trust when they are ready to contribute to Wairarapa Moana in some way and it looks like a very bright future ahead indeed.

ARTICLE one

Strategy Should be Elegant in its Simplicity New Zealand has reached its peak in the dairy sector. Given the pressures of climate change and water quality on the dairy industry, growth in the industry is unlikely to occur much beyond current levels.

Despite this, global demand for milk and milk products will remain strong.

The size of the burgeoning middle class in China is mind blowing. Having spent some time travelling in China, from Shanghai to Guangzhou I was aware that, in that area alone, there are 200 million residents. I reflected on what my ancestor thought when visiting England in the 1800s and on seeing multitudes of people he knew to be the coming wave of Europeans to flood Aotearoa. Whilst empathising with my tupuna I reflect on how that was nothing compared to the population of China today and in the future – the world is truly yet to see the impacts of China.

Wairarapa Moana Incorporation (WMI) are well aware of these pressures and has highly monitored farms and is constantly seeking world-class expertise. This has culminated in our Business Advisory Group led by NZ and globally renowned agribusiness oracle Dr Gavin Sheath. The group’s big question has always been: ‘How does WMI achieve environmental sustainability and optimal returns on a largescale dairy platform?’

Milk is the only complete food produced by mammals for baby mammals. It is not only used in its whole form but for a multitude of ingredients and extracts (such as bakery goods etc). Regardless of what we hear, dairy has a role to play in global food and calorie intake for some time yet. The demand for dairy products will remain strong, the simple rationale is driven by population growth.

It’s well-known that by 2050 there is expected to be 9 billion human beings on planet Earth, food production needs to double simply to feed the expected population. For example, only 20% of China’s land mass is fertile and there is a billion plus people there to feed. Japan only produces 20% of their population’s food, and in the USA (the world’s largest economy) water is becoming increasingly scarce.

Feeding the expanding global population will be an increasing challenge for all humanity.

To reply to this, we have turned to our cultural knowledge.

Early on we pulled in a meeting of shareholders and science experts and developed our Kaitiaki plan. The plan drew on western scientific knowledge, practical experience, and cultural knowledge. The plan has recently been revamped by the Committee and will now be a front-and-centre objective for all of our operations.

For WMI our dairy strategy is part of a calculated plan to build a large-scale dairy platform, move into the value chain; become the sellers of products not just the producers of milk.

For a strategist, such as myself, it’s satisfying to see what we have accomplished. We have a resilient large-scale dairy platform producing over 4 million kgs of milk solids, we have a 33% interest in Miraka which creates further value. In response to the food supply issues, Miraka provides enough calories to sustain several millions of people globally.

Even more satisfying are the values upon which Miraka operates and the environmental profile it holds which includes a symbiotic relationship with other activities near the site which includes large-scale horticulture, geothermal power generation, water reticulation and worm farm. This is a world-leading enterprise.

WMI developed a large-scale production base – we produce a high volume of milk very efficiently. Our value chain strategy essentially now sits with Miraka and in providing products that add-value to the milk we produce. Taupo Pure and Whaiora are two ready product examples (and there are more to come). The business end of WMI and Miraka, is now valued at over NZ$280m and NZ$160m respectively and combined annual revenues in excess of NZ$240m.

I am hugely proud of the simplicity of our strategy driven by the kaupapa of nurturing our taonga. This short article is a simple narration of a journey that has been the result of the efforts of many over many years: the original pioneers; our staff; our sharemilkers; our contractors; and supplier communities. We are a whānau business supporting whānau.

We can stand as a collective and say we have achieved a great number of milestones and know that we are also on a perpetual journey.

We now live in a world that is changing at an ever-increasing rate. My next article will focus on ‘what next’ for WMI.

Support Wai 85 Pouākani lands claim VOTE NO for the Deed of Settlement Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki Nui-ā-Rua Settlement Trust (NKKWTNAR) have announced their ratification timetable.

Voting on the Deed of Settlement commences on Saturday, 29 September 2018 and closes at 12:30pm, Sunday 11 November 2018.

“WMI are extremely disappointed that NKKWTNAR has commenced a process which could remove our right as Wairarapa Moana to go to the Waitangi Tribunal,” said Chairman Kingi Smiler.

“Shareholders have repeatedly voted in favour of putting Wai 85 Pouākani lands back before the Waitangi Tribunal.”

To vote in the upcoming ratification process you must be registered with NKKWTNAR.

When will the Waitangi Tribunal hear our urgent application?

December 2018. The exact date has yet to be confirmed by the Waitangi Tribunal. This is later than we had expected.

The delay is due to the inability of the Crown to file important valuation evidence before November 2018.

To hear our application, the Waitangi Tribunal has reconvened the Wairarapa ki Tararua Inquiry panel led by Judge Carrie Wainwright, Dame Margaret Bazley, and Prof Ahorangi Derek Lardelli (replacing Prof Wharehuia Milroy who was the other original member of this Inquiry panel).

We will update shareholders and whānau on our Waitangi Tribunal hearing date during the Roadshows and at the Annual General Meeting Saturday 27th October at Rathkeale College, Masterton. Also, look out for information on our website, and on Facebook.

Other Wairarapa ki Tararua claims heading for the Waitangi Tribunal Ngāi Tūmapūhia-ā-Rangi, the claimants for WAI 429, have also been granted an urgent remedy hearing by the Waitangi Tribunal. Their application seeks resumption of part of the Ngāumu Forest. The Ngāi Tūmapūhia-ā-Rangi application will be heard on a similar timetable to WMI. WAI 85 – Pouākani and WAI 429 are both part of the Wairarapa ki Tararua Inquiry.

Why the Committee of Management are asking shareholders and whānau who are also registered beneficiaries of Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki Nui ā Rua to VOTE NO for the Deed of Settlement: • This is not a good deal – there are plenty of examples where other iwi have done much better on fundamental areas such as community and cultural development, environmental restoration and Treaty Partnerships. The proposed Settlement is weak in these very important matters. If we agree to the Settlement we are agreeing to further Treaty headaches for future generations.

• Shareholders have told the CoM repeatedly that you want separate and direct negotiation with the Crown for the settlement of our Treaty claim – the settlement does not provide this.

• The Waitangi Tribunal Wairarapa ki Tararua Inquiry said owners (WMI shareholders) should be compensated in relation to the breaches associated with the Pouākani lands – the settlement does not provide this.

• The Wai85 – Pouākani claim, in financial terms, is significant.

• Any redress intended to settle Pouākani matters will be retained by NKKWTNAR on behalf of all Ngāti Kahungunu whānau of Wairarapa and the Tāmaki Nui ā Rua regions. The settlement will be of no direct benefit to WMI shareholders.

• Providing redress relating to our specific Pouākani issues to a different group, rather than ourselves as WMI shareholders, is not appropriate and is inconsistent with both the Tribunal’s recommendations and the position expressed to date by WMI shareholders.

No Redress for Wairarapa Moana in Deed of Settlement It is always interesting to see the variety of clauses that come up in Crown-iwi agreements.

Not every settlement is new or innovative. There are a lot of “insert name of iwi here” cookie-cutter type agreements.

These agreements that look pretty much like any other. In other cases negotiations get right out of the box. WaikatoTainui, Tūwharetoa, Whanganui, Tūhoe and Te Arawa are all excellent examples. I’m struck by how good iwi-Crown negotiations create effective and powerful settlements. Since Wairarapa negotiations started in 2013 I have been holding my breath waiting to see what new and innovative solutions we would come up with – I shouldn’t have waited. I think we got the cookie-cutter version.

2. Wairarapa waterways are not recognised as significant.

So what’s missing?

1. We get Wairarapa Moana with no dedicated funding to fix it up.

Wairarapa Moana is our lake – we identify ourselves and our rohe by it. The lake is of national and international importance yet the nature and condition of our lakes has declined massively. The high nutrient and fertility levels in the water mean that the lake itself is super trophic (almost dead). We ought to clean it up. That’s going to require money – lots of it. The proposed settlement establishes the Wairarapa Moana Statutory Board to act as a guardian of Wairarapa Moana and the Ruamahanga River. It is, however, an advisory body whose statutory role over the lake is to trade advice with the Department of Conservation and local authorities. The Board has no authority and no money for clean-up; it is both powerless and putea-less.

Waikato-Tainui and Whanganui iwi, Te Arawa, Tūwharetoa and Tūhoe have all been very successful in cementing the importance of their rivers, lakes, and forests. But they are not the only iwi to do so. I wonder why our rivers and lakes are not recognised. Are our waterways less important? Is our tradition and identity less important? Our lakes and rivers are not mentioned in any overlay classification, statutory acknowledgement, or deed of recognition within the proposed settlement.

At the very least Wairarapa Moana and Ruamahanga River should be recognised.

3. There is no response to our challenges in health, education, and employment.

What is the point of settlement if there is no change in our communities? Settlements are about setting hapū, Marae and whānau on a steady social footing. The proposed Deed has no ability to ensure that Crown policy, funding and services are responsive to our social needs. Nor is any funding provided.

4. We don’t talk to anyone in charge – Treaty settlements are about re-setting the Treaty relationship with the Crown. Our settlement ought to establish direct relationships with the Crown. Our Treaty relationship ought to be directly to the Crown through the Prime Minister and relevant Government ministers. The proposed Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki Nui ā Rua Trust settlement fails to set any appropriate Treatybased relationship for us with the Crown.

There are no new relationships with Regional or District Councils – The Deed establishes Te Upoko Taiao as a permanent committee of the Greater Wellington Regional Council. Te Upoko Taiao, however, has been operating since 2009. The proposed Crown settlement simply confirms something that is already in place. Is there more we could do with the regional and district councils?

How about co- or joint management?

Our Treaty settlement is full and final; there will be no going back. It is vitally important that we get this right. Is this the best the Crown can do? No. Our proposed settlement offers significantly less than what many other iwi have obtained. Settlements need to be fair and settling for less than anyone else is fundamentally unjust. The Crown should know better.

We should know better too. We understand the Treaty is about an equal partnership between ourselves and the Crown. That is where our future lies.

Instead, our settlement establishes no direct relationship with the Crown; no partnership, no collaboration, no connection. It is not enough to hand on the struggle for Treaty partnership to the next generation. Where other Treaty settlements have established iwi as partners with the Crown, our settlement has not.

Our job is to create future opportunities for the generations to come. On social and environmental matters and Treaty relationships I think our settlement can do much, much better – other iwi settlements have.

AGM – Absence of Good Manners?

At the end of last year’s AGM I left feeling very disappointed. Disappointed, specifically, at some of the behaviour of the people attending. I left wondering if some people had any idea of what an AGM is about.

The purpose of an AGM is to receive the minutes of the last general meeting(s), receive and consider the financial statements, adopt the auditor’s report, elect persons to the CoM, appoint an auditor, appoint a share valuer, authorise the payment of a dividend to the shareholders, and consider any proposed special resolution, and consider and, if thought fit, dispose of other matters of general business.

If you have a pre-prepared detailed question (especially a financial one requiring a calculator) please give the Committee time to pre-prepare an accurate and detailed response (or sufficient time to provide a detailed response at a later time).

I honestly don’t know the number of Fonterra trucks parked at Miraka in any one calendar year. I do know that question has no bearing on the business of WMI or my role as a Committee member. So if you have a question about another organisation please ask at their AGM, not ours.

• Attack, Gore, Maim – we have a long tradition of attacking the work of our Committee. I’ve been part of that tradition. What I notice nowadays, however, is our willingness to level the attack at a much more personal level. Please keep it professional and not personal.

Committee members are people too they do not deserve personal or professional derision or slander. (see also Aggressive, Grumpy, and Mean-spirited) • Accuse, Give opinion and Mis-inform – it is NOT OK to level strong accusations at the Committee without the slightest shred of evidence. It is NOT appropriate, without references, to pass your opinion as fact and dismiss information from the Committee as falsifications.

Accounting fraud, financial mis-reporting, and shareholder mis-representation are extremely serious matters. If you have real concerns please report them to the Serious Fraud Office, National Enforcement Unit (at MBIE) or the Māori Land Court. But if you are just making noise or hollow accusations, remember you are doing so

If you want to make a presentation at the AGM please approach the Committee early for an agreed agenda slot, otherwise put an article in the Mailer or host your own meeting. Please understand you are a guest at a meeting arranged and hosted by the Committee.

The COM has discussed this extensively since the last AGM.

• Aggressive, Grumpy, and Mean-spirited – I wonder why some people choose to communicate when they are angry and frustrated. It is hard to listen to and angry or aggressive persons never listen to answers anyway. So why do it? If you find yourself feeling Aggressive, Grumpy and Mean! Please wait till you are Accepting, Grounded and Mindful – it is so much better for everybody.

• Asking Governance about Management topics – the Committee is charged with settling the strategic direction of WMI and ensuring measurable progress against that direction. We do not milk the cows. We don’t even get to drive the tractors. If you have a detailed question about an activity on-farm please ask but don’t be surprised if the Committee asks someone who is on-farm to answer.

It is not appropriate to play out personal issues in front of the whole AGM. Please do not bring your own personal views into the meeting.

On-farm, WMI has a very positive and healthy organisational culture, that has been the key to much of our success. While WMI staff understand the importance of a good operational culture, it is becoming apparent to me that some shareholders do not. We need to act consistently with the expectations we

At the coming AGM I’ll be there encouraging (maybe even interrupting) an appropriate set of behaviours. It might be difficult, it might be new but I do think it is time. I’d ask all AGM participants to support me in building a healthy and positive atmosphere.

Let’s build an event we can be proud of and one we look forward to every year.

A time of reflection, a time to remember our beloved lost, but also a time to celebrate each other.

With the loss of many of our kuia and koroua, aunty Mere Kerehi asked the Marae committee if they could host an event for Matariki. It was decided, a High Tea Party. Many of the local community groups (Te Hauora, Compass Health, UCOL, Wairarapa Community Law, Whaiora, Sports Wellington, Rangitāne o Wairarapa and Ngā Kanohi Marae Trades Training) supported the event with food, waitresses, waiters and ringawera.

Masterton Police donated the services of their photographer (Bob Hooker), Mike Kawana provided the music

entertainment and our mokopuna Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa entertained the kaumātua with kapahaka. Special thanks also to the whānau from Ngāti Poneke Māori Arts.

Our pakeke and special guests loved being pampered regardless of the weather conditions and late notice.

We have already received several requests for this to become an annual celebration from those who attended. Such a marvellous and enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

Marae Update Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae – Te Ara Takapau Kia kaha te reo Māori was the theme for te wiki o te reo Māori. Many tribes adopted their own themes and for Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae, it was Te Taiao, the environment.

Recently, the Marae community had a decision to make about naming a newly formed road that would service six papakāinga homes built on the Marae reserve. As it is with te reo Māori, the word structure is that a noun comes first and is followed by the adjective, the opposite of te reo Pākehā.

As such, the Māori name we chose follows that structure and as it is with Māori place names, they often have a historical story attached to them.

Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae community told them; “No, there will be no add on to the end of Takapau” and reinforced once more that the name when spoken in te reo Māori is historically meaningful and that it belongs to us (not LINZ).

CDC supported our decision to LINZ and their commitment to te reo Māori and being a bit cheeky, CDC put up the Te Ara Takapau signpost before LINZ had approved the name, as is.

Our Marae representatives to Carterton District Council (CDC), took the name, Te Ara Takapau to a council meeting.

After an explanation about the meaning of the name, the proposed street name was sent to Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), for approval. A question from LINZ came back to CDC saying that there should be an English word like Road or Street or Drive or Way attached to the end of the name to read for example; Te Ara Takapau Drive.

This is when our road, according to LINZ, became the second exclusive te reo Māori name for a road without anything else being lawfully attached to it.

I have used these acronyms intentionally. Hurunui-o-Rangi is a part of Carterton District and our council stood by us and supported our name. Land Information New Zealand accepted te reo Māori with respect to our name. Our Marae community did not think we were following a precedent, we only wanted to respect our heritage.

The naming process is the weaving of political mainstream organisations with our Marae, but the name is also a ranga.

One meaning of ranga is a weave and Takapau is the name of a house that stood at Hurunui-o-Rangi. The ranga is the weave of the past with the present. Another meaning of ranga is a stage of genealogy. Some lines of whakapapa for Hurunui-oRangi came from Takapau like; Tahu Makakanui, Taneroa, Hikarahui and Kaiparuparu. Taiao’s deeper meaning can come from understanding it as a compound word of tai or tide and ao or the world. Taiao then is the environment with an earthly rhythm. Te Ara Takapau is therefore interwoven into Te Taiao, our environment.

Te Rangimārie Marae Winter is nearly over! The weather has certainly been quite pleasant recently and it’s a joy to see daffodils and other spring flowers starting to bloom.

We are always busy here at the Marae with groups from Compass Health, Te Mauri, Te Korowai, Outdoor Pursuits, a group of Japanese exchange students, and many others coming to use the Marae and its grounds.

We have had a Citizenship Hui with the council. It was a delightful afternoon with seventeen new citizens and their families being welcomed to the wharenui and a lovely afternoon tea to follow.

Our wharenui, Nukutaimemeha, has had new carpet over the last year and a month ago we were offered secondhand chairs from a Government department. We bought 65, and now have lovely new chairs in the wharenui. They are sturdy and very comfortable and we are very delighted.

Over the past month we have bought a heat pump for the wharenui. It’s wonderful and warm in there, always has been warm but it is fabulous now.

We held a cheese making day for ladies of the church recently in our lovely kitchen. Lots of chatter and laughter produced some great ricotta cheese and recipes to go further. It was a fun day and I’m sure we will repeat it.

The Marae held a retreat for priests of Te Upoko o Te Ika, fifteen in total, so the usual catering was taken care of by the kitchen fairies Reo, Susie and Robin.

Our church services have had a later change of time. We now have service at 9.30am which has been good through the depths of winter. Sunday school happens at that time too and new youngsters are always welcome. We also have a young person’s group, ‘The Atrium’ that meets every Thursday through the term. These young people learn the skills needed to lead services in the Mihingare church. Our new priest Rev Liz is their teacher and she is wonderfully skilled.

Recently we lost one of our church whānau , Heather Marunui. Heather had been living in Kandahar Home and will be sadly missed by us. We offer our sympathies to her family.

Past scholarship recipient, Hannah Johnson, the mokopuna of shareholder and past Wairarapa Moana Trust trustee, Rangi Johnson, graduated from Victoria University 2017.

Tēnā koe Thank you so much to Wairarapa Moana Trust for honouring me as a recipient of the Future Leaders Scholarship. Thanks to your generosity I was able to focus on my studies and eventually graduate with a Bachelor of Law in December 2017.

I am now working as an adviser for the Department of Corrections in the Prosecution Support Team, which enables me to use my legal studies. On the 7th of September 2018, I was admitted to the bar and am now able to practice law.

I intend on working to represent those without a voice in the legal system and the opportunity you have given me has brought me closer to that goal.

I would also like to mihi to my grandfather, Rangi Johnson, for connecting me with my whakapapa to Wairarapa Moana.

July 5th saw the seventh annual Miraka Suppliers Dinner, held at the Taupō Great Lake Centre.

Over 270 Miraka suppliers including shareholders and staff were in attendance, to close off the 2017/18 farming season and celebrate another successful year. Guests were entertained by the Awhiorangi Kapa Haka group from Taupō-nui-a-Tia College and heard some compelling messages from Chairman Kingi Smiler, CEO Richard Wyeth and guest speaker Stuart Taylor.

The informal theme of the night, from all speakers, was the need for farmers to reassess their focus and business priorities, and to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

Comments by guest speaker Stuart Taylor, of Millennium Farming, were a popular talking point over dessert, following his challenge to farmers to think in a refreshed way about farming, with a strong emphasis to farm-staff recruitment, engagement and investment.

Stuart is a farmer in his own right, growing up on a dairy farm in Northland and now share-farming three dairy operations in the Manawatu and Whanganui regions. Stuart spoke of the mistakes he and other farmers have made, with the new generation of employees, and the need to think differently.

Stuart was so inspired by the outcomes of his new thinking (which also evolved from his participation in the Kellogg Rural Leaders Programme) that he started the Millennium Farming social media group to share these concepts.

The night also allowed the Miraka whānau to acknowledge the excellent on-farm performances of our Milk Quality and Te Ara Miraka champions. A total of seventeen farms were recognised for being Grade-Free throughout the 2017/18 season and the top 10 Te Ara Miraka farmers were also acknowledged.

The night concluded with the awarding of the Te Ara Miraka Award, for the highest achieving farm within the Te Ara Miraka Farming Excellence Programme, to Wairarapa Moana Incorporation’s Farm 14, which scored a perfect 100/100.

Farm Manager Arik Asmedi and his team were joined by WMI Operations Manager Denis Collins and General Manager Nick Hume to receive the trophy. There was a high standard, with two farms sharing second place on 95 points, and five farms equal third on 90 points.

It was a tremendous night for WMI farms for not only taking out the top award but also securing second and third placings.

Arik Asmedi The manager of Te Ara Miraka award winning farm, Arik Asmedi, is surprised, proud and humbled by the farm’s success.

The Wairarapa Moana Inc. Farm 14 has been a consistent high performer for Miraka but this award is special, says Arik. It’s a testament to the commitment of the farm staff and the WMI organisation, he says.

Arik says Te Ara Miraka is all about good farming. It’s about being leaders in environmental care and looking at the longterm future of farming in a sustainable way. He likes to have good systems in place and says this enables them to cope when things go unexpectedly wrong. Staff training is essential and the WMI staff training programme is tremendous. He said the Bull Handling day last summer was an example of this, teaching staff good animal husbandry skills. Skilled staff are good staff and good staff make good farms, says Arik.

Arik, who has been farming with WMI for 9½ years puts the farm success down to good planning and preparation, a good organised plan that will cover every eventuality. The 368 hectare property milks 950 cows at peak lactation. The farm is a system 3 with cows producing 415kgMS with a low-cost structure but Arik says they break down all tasks to manageable work units with each staff member knowing exactly what needs to be done.

The farm staff, 2IC Muhamad Ansori, who is a friend of Arik’s from childhood, Mike Maloney and Christian Tuhura, who has done a half season on the property, meet briefly each morning before getting on with the organised tasks.

With Ansori’s 10 years in dairy, and Mike’s 7 years, they have a good spread of knowledge and skills. Muhamad has excellent experience and he makes Arik’s life easier. Both are from Indonesia and have made new lives here in New Zealand.

Christian Tuhura is of WMI descent and says Arik: “He just gets up every morning and wants to know more. He’s an excellent learner busting to soak up everything.” It’s a pleasure working with good staff, says Arik, and their experience, enthusiasm and commitment means the focus on quality is constant. They’re a tight team and they’re individuals who want to learn more so they can improve the herd, the farm and their own skills.

care and returning them to peak condition. It pays off and you can see the results, says Arik. It’s nice to see the animals blossom. The farm uses kale and swedes grown on farm for winter feed, with some use of PK. Arik holds weekly and monthly meetings on farm and he meets with other farm managers and the WMI management team, Nick, Denis and Simon, every ten days. Information from those meetings is always passed on to his staff. There is an intense focus on quality, innovation and environmental care. It helps when you know everyone is focused on the same thing, says Arik. He says the relationship with the WMI management team is wonderful and enables his team to perform to a higher level.

Nick Hume, WMI General Manager, says Arik and his team are incredibly hard workers. It’s almost daunting to see how committed they are he says. Totally impressive, says Nick, and the Te Ara Miraka award is a testament to their drive and enthusiasm. Nick said these results were not at the cost of on-farm profit and it shows you can be profitable while looking after your people, the environment and cows.

Horticulture signs up to prestigious Ahuwhenua Trophy Horticulture New Zealand signed up to be part of the prestigious Ahuwhenua Trophy Te Puni Kōkiri Excellence in Māori Farming Award, which recognises excellence in Māori farming.

Recently, Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Mike Chapman and Kingi Smiler, Chairman of the Ahuwhenua Management Committee, signed an agreement that will see a horticulture Ahuwhenua Trophy in 2020. Each year the awards recognise a farming sector and horticulture will be on a third-year rotation, after dairy (2018) and sheep and beef (2019).

“There are significant Māori holdings in horticulture, so it is great for our industry to be able to join the legacy that the Ahuwhenua Trophy holds,” says Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Mike Chapman.
