Growing up at Pouākani My name is Gary Parker and I was born in Carterton to my parents Alfred and Thelma Parker. My sister Beverly was the eldest and she passed away in 1997 and the baby of the family is my younger brother, Colin.

Since I began receiving the Mailer, I’ve only read a few articles about the early days of Pouākani and thought one day I would like to add my little piece on the time we spent on the farm at Mitchell Road. The first house I remember living in was in Clifton Avenue, Carterton and from there we moved out to Maungarake where my dad was the roadman for Wairarapa South County Council. The year was 1952 and it was while dad was working there that he was informed he was successful in a ballot for a farm in Mangakino. “Manga! Where’s that?” So dad and my sister went to have a look at this place and when I think back now, I

wonder how they got there and back in dads Ford Model A car. It must have been a very slow journey just to find the place because we had never heard of Mangakino, but I can remember how excited dad was because he was going to be the farmer he had always wanted to be and my brother and I, we were pretty excited about moving to a place we had never heard of. So, it seemed like a bit of an adventure for us. A very lovely gentleman by the name of Ian Shallcrass was helping us to shift our furniture in his truck to Mangakino. The day arrived, all the furniture was loaded and we had to be at the carriers by 4.30am. We
