Shareholders and whānau gathered at Mangakino Area School on Saturday 24 March 2018 for a Special General Meeting (SGM) on the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation application to the Waitangi Tribunal for the return of certain lands around the Maraetai Dam. The SGM was called by shareholders that together hold 10% of the shares in the Incorporation to consider the following resolution:
“That this Special General Meeting does not support the application to the Waitangi Tribunal on behalf of the shareholders of the Wairarapa Moana ki Pouākani Incorporation seeking binding recommendations for the resumption of certain lands near Mangakino, South Waikato.”
“All the shareholders who spoke at the Special General Meeting, spoke in a reasoned and measured way, whether speaking for or against the motion. It was clear that while people had reached their own view on the resolution, they were still prepared to acknowledge other points of view. It’s a sign that we are coming of age,” said kaumātua Kim Workman. A range of speakers were heard FOR and AGAINST the motion. Both sides of the argument were fully canvassed.
