From Auckland to Christchurch, a team of Wairarapa Moana directors and Trust board members travel to selected towns to meet with shareholders that may not be able to attend the Annual General meeting.

The purpose is to present and to inform and to update them on how well the business and social side of the organisation is performing.

Amongst all the laughter and chatter, it also gives shareholders the opportune chance to learn how well the organisation is doing and to ask questions.

The pre-AGM annual roadshows have for several years brought shareholders together where they joyously catch up with whānau, relatives and friends and to meet others for the first time and to witness old mates bumping into each other to learn, that like everyone else, they have a whakapapa to Wairarapa.

It was at the 2015 AGM held at Rathkeale College in Masterton that a whānau member from Australia asked why the Incorporation doesn’t deliver a roadshow in Australia considering that we have a large number of shareholders living there.

A number of whānau have been living in Australia for over forty years and were very appreciative to have had the opportunity to re-connect with home. For some, it was the first time they’d ever been involved with Wairarapa Moana as a shareholder and it was a joy for them to meet others and to finally have that important connection to Wairarapa.

A comprehensive power-point presentation followed that included: an explanation of the meaning of the Wairarapa Moana logo; the WMI vision statement and values; the history of Wairarapa Moana; an in-depth look at the Strategic Plan that covered the five key indicators: 1. protecting and enhancing the asset 2. industry leader 3. growth beyond current assets 4. shareholder pride 5. paying a dividend.

The reply from the Chair was that the board will look at the numbers and will consider whether a roadshow to Australia is viable.

Letters were sent out to shareholders in Australia with known contact details asking in short whether they would attend a roadshow for their informed benefit and the response back was overwhelmingly in favour. The only information they receive about the business and what else is happening is via the mailer. So, the opportunity to be part of Wairarapa Moana was a privilege not to be missed.

Brisbane Roadshow June 18, 2017, was an important day in the history of Wairarapa Moana. The first meeting ever held offshore was held in Brisbane for shareholders and whānau to receive their very own roadshow.

The Wairarapa Moana team consisted of the Chair, Kingi Smiler and Share Registrar, Ngaere Webb. They were welcomed by nineteen shareholders and whānau who were proud to be a part of history in the making. The meeting commenced with whakawhanaungatanga (introductions), which brought delight to hear the whānau and tī puna names being cited. The Kaio whānau were there in numbers, the Tinsley whānau and Teone Hutana have a whakapapa to Pouhiki and Hutana, original owners listed 49 and 50 on the 1882 Deed. Shane Karipa is a descendant of Moata Anaru listed as 109 and Michael Clark from Tuahiwi Marae in the South Island is a descendant from Karaitiana Korou

Much interest was shown in the development of Miraka and its establishment on the world stage. The launch of the Whaiora product range of natural smoothie blends certainly captured the attention of shareholders along with its global exports, that left shareholders feeling very proud and connected.

Shareholders took the opportunity to complete forms to update their contact details and were each presented with Wairarapa Moana carry-bags to mark the occasion. They expressed their appreciation for the opportunity provided by Wairarapa Moana for bringing the roadshow to Brisbane.

Perth Roadshow Thirty-one shareholders and whānau attended the July 30 roadshow and were all warmly greeted by Kingi and Ngaere.

Whakawhanaungatanga is a cultural practise that introduces you to all in attendance and is a process that establishes relationships, in this case, through a shared line of descent to Wairarapa and all inherent tribal associations.

The Pedersen sisters from Mangakino and their cousin Elizabeth Campbell shared their greetings with Elwyn Donoghue from the Toki whānau, Gerard Wallen a successor from Katarina Hemi, Hoani Matenga a descendant from original owner Paratene Nuku, number 9 on the owners list, and Harold Waaka from Karaitiana.

Natasha Knowles and Huia Williamson both descend from Karaitiana Korou number 31, with Huia also a descendant of Hutana. Russell Devonshire descends from Hera Tamati, Oni and her daughters Ngaire and Cindy are successors to Henare Kawana. They dragged their cousin along Stephen Paku, the son of shareholder Hawea Paku.

WAIRARAPA MOANA MERCHANDISE Also in attendance was Nic Compton a great mokopuna of Puhara Tikawenga Te Tau and Oriwa Taurau with a whakapapa to original owner Ani Ratima and Taini Carlsson a descendant of Hemi Te Miha and Kiri Smiler with her descent line to Ruka Hohepa.

It was a wonderful turnout for shareholders to greet each other and to forge those relationships and to sit together, not as strangers but as interwoven relatives, with a whakapapa to Wairarapa Moana.

The history and importance of Wairarapa Moana and its environs to Wairarapa Māori and the resulting alienation and migration of Wairarapa whānau to Mangakino left an indelible mark of anger and grief with shareholders. Then, as the presentation progressed to the Incorporation’s agri-business growth and development and to the Miraka story, the mood changed to one of wonderment.

“We’ve come a long way!” is a good catch phrase often used and heard by shareholders and that triggered several questions around farm management; the disposal of effluent; forestry rotation; opportunities for diversification; scholarships and Miraka. For Kingi and Ngaere it was good to have that interaction with our Ozzy whānau and for them to be a part of the Wairarapa Moana story.

A number of shareholders have lived in Perth for over forty odd years and have done considerably well for themselves and have confessed that they have made their life in Australia and that is where they will remain. After the power-point presentation, a few emotional nerves were touched with a few shareholders overheard saying, “I need to go home more often”.

Our tohu, our brand, our logo: Wairarapa Moana nurturing our taonga, symbolises the continuum of time that never ends. Its inference originates from our tī puna and has continued from generation to generation to today and will continue to future generations.

Wairarapa Moana would like to hear from our shareholders living in Australia. As a result of the roadshows, we are very fortunate that Kaye Tinsley whom attended the Brisbane roadshow has put pen to paper and has provided an article about his successful career on the Gold Coast and we are also very grateful to Nic Compton, who attended the Perth roadshow, for sharing his journey with Wairarapa Moana.

We would like to hear from others and certainly there will be whānau and shareholders in New Zealand who will remember you and would love to read your stories.

Te Rangimārie Marae Well the winter weather made us all hunker down to keep ourselves nice, safe and warm.

Nevertheless, lots of groups have been hiring the buildings and have been enjoying our lovely surroundings. Last issue we were getting ready to repile the wharenui. Winter was coming and we wanted to get the job done quickly. The Marae complex shut down for a couple of weeks and the builders moved in and started their work. Of course, there was some bad weather but the builders kept moving and we soon had a repiled floor and new carpet. It looks so nice in there and I’m told it’s delightfully warm. If you saw a recent replay of our DIY and noticed the riverbed rocks filmed in our rohe. Rocks from the same riverbed were found under our wharenui.

We enjoy many groups coming to use the Marae but a particularly nice evening was held recently when our ladies put on a dinner for Kahungūnu whānau, with Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa providing the entertainment.

There is always room for more whānau to attend church Sunday at 9am and Sunday school for the young ones too.

Three boys from the kura are part of our church family and they made us feel very proud. Great kids, wonderful singing.

We are proud to have the doctors’ clinic at the Marae serving and treating our community for all the winter ailments with the car park always full, which is an acknowledgement for what the Marae-based clinic provides for our people.

We have a few issues as our buildings age meaning that maintaining our Marae never stops. We discovered a leak in the wall of the dining room and kitchen. Dripping taps are a normal occurrence, the dishwasher has a mind of its

It’s never ending and thanks to our tenacious chairperson, Waitohiariki Quayle, nothing stays broken for more than a few hours! Thanks Wai, you are a great worker and wonderful at keeping our Marae in good working order.

Our church family although small, is faithful and hardworking, enjoying fellowship with each other every week and always there to help us with any Marae maintenance.

Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae Update Reports were presented on behalf of the Marae Trustees, the Marae Committee, the Papākainga Committee, the Marae Rebuild Committee as well as the Annual Financial Accounts. Trustees Charlie Grant resigned and Mary Nunn was due for rotation.

An election was held where Mary was returned and Mellisa Tipene was nominated to the Trustees.

Due to the papākainga development, the Marae AGM was held on 2nd July in the Hurunui-o-Rangi Room at the Carterton Events Centre.

Marae Update Papawai Marae – Te Ihirangaranga o Te Reo Karanga In June this year Papawai Marae had the pleasure of hosting and facilitating the very first wānanga of Te Ihirangaranga o Te Reo Karanga.

You will remember Wairarapa Moana supported our first rōpu through Te Rito o Te Reo Karanga under the tutelage of Te Raina Ferris. This is phase three of that journey where that rōpu gives back to our Marae and begins growing future capacity in the art of karanga on our paepae.

Our six tī puna Marae put forward wāhine to participate in the planned six wānanga. Many were approached to participate however the commitment required saw some not quite ready to commit. In so saying, Papawai extended an offer for wāhine at Hau Ariki Marae who accepted to participate under our umbrella in this important mahi.

Our wānanga is modelled on Tuakana/Teina where we grow and learn from each other.

Me te tuakana te teina e te tōtika, mā te teina te tuakana e tōtika.

The older will lead the younger and the younger will lead the older.

Our weekend started with a pōwhiri followed by whakawhanaungatanga and on to the wānanga itself. We had an amazing weekend with our wāhine setting the scene for learning and for future wānanga.

Due to the work being undertaken for the papākainga development and the Marae rebuild, the Marae is only available for day bookings until further notice. We have also agreed that children are to be kept away from the Marae for Health and Safety reasons. We apologise for this stance but make this decision in the best interest of keeping our children safe during the developments.

We had an opportunity to practice karanga using whakatauki. This gave our teina the opportunity to hear their own voice and build confidence and support each other. For our tuakana it was a chance to come together to share our own experiences and pass on our learning, share waiata, kōrero and karakia in the safety of our wānanga.

These wānanga are pitched at a foundation level and have been designed to build on from the previous one, from the creation story through to local landmarks and local kōrero.

This is just the beginning for our teina and the start of an eventful year of self-discovery that is only limited by the imagination. We want to extend a big mihi to our tāne who supported our wānanga at the pōwhiri and ringawera tautoko.

Thanks also to our whānau who offered support in a range of ways over the weekend. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Wairarapa to Western Australia We’re so lucky that we were born in this country.

It’s something we hear often, at least that is something I have noticed in the past.

America takes that to the extreme being of course the greatest country in the world, yeah right! Perhaps it is the culture we are raised in, the landscape, friends and family, the history and kai, even that shapes who we are and our values. In Solomon Island pigeon they call it “wuntok” (one talk). They speak the same language, all think the same and grow up with similar values.

Living in Australia longer than I have lived in the country of my birth, I’ve heard a lot of Aussies whose dreams are to buy a camper van and travel around Australia because “Why would you want to go anywhere else!” My reply is often, you need to go abroad because of that very comment, which might get them thinking. Although Bali is a popular destination for Australian holiday makers, it is a short-term polished, cultural experience that doesn’t take too much effort but with plenty of wuntok around for peer support.

To be honest though, growing up in the Wairarapa in the sixties and seventies was pretty good. Winters, I remember can be cold but the summers are what I recall the most. The mountains and beautiful rivers where eeling was a favourite pastime in the summer. Grab the spears and off on our pushbikes to the river to slay some poor critters.

Another great part of my childhood was Riversdale beach.

My dad, Gary Compton, like most kiwis, loved the coast and loved going out to gather fresh kaimoana. We had this tiny little bach (looks smaller now than when I was a kid) that my grandfather, Earl Compton, built. Ever since I can remember the back porch concrete slab with the hollow block wall was always cracked and on a dubious angle because of the dodgy sand dune foundations. We don’t own it anymore but I was out at Riversdale after the Te Tau whānau hui earlier this year and it is still on that angle.

Across the road is aunty Kuini’s bach, which still belongs to the Te Tau whānau. It seems most times we went there,

aunty Kuini and Marama were always there. Aunty Kuini and grandma Till were very good friends and cousin Marama and I can share one of many stories about them. One time, grandma Till was feeling gloomy and her and aunty Kuini drank a bottle of gin together. Afterwards, myself and Marama helped aunty back across the road. We struggled to hold her up and we all fell in the ditch. That night Marama had to move aunty into three different beds because she became very sick and couldn’t keep it down. We were only kids at the time but it’s those funny moments you don’t forget.

Nic Compton – Artist The first thing I ever carved was a tiki head that I carved in relief into a plank of wood off an old wooden apple box.

I carved it with those cheap lino tools not really made for serious wood carving and gave it to grandma Till, thinking because she’s Māori. I was only young at the time and thought it the right thing to do. But little did I know that many years later I would be carving and sculpting as a profession.

I remember one of the Finn brothers talking about how you can’t help being influenced by Māori culture growing up in Aotearoa and that is true. Having a Māori whakapapa is a leading influence in the way I see the world. If anything, it made me think about racial issues, the indigenous people of this country (Australia) got a real bum deal and I have trouble keeping my mouth shut about colonisation and the Terra Nullius concept, which means that this land belongs to nobody and can be claimed by any sovereign authority.

There may have been disagreements on who owns what but at least Māori are acknowledged as tangata whenua, people of the land. Not so with the use of Terra Nullius in Australia, despite the fact that the aborigines were residing on land long before Cook arrived. Aborigines, the stolen generation, lost everything and it still weighs heavy with them.

This piece I carved with Tom Saylor, an old Torres Strait Island Elder. Living and working in the heat of the Pilbara is hard and everything seemed like a struggle, just life in general. This work reflects the struggle between man and beast and the beast that is man.

I live out in the wheat fields of Western Australia many miles from the ocean, yet I still find much of the art I make is aquatic in nature. While the work I do is not based on traditional Māori carvings, the spiritual influence in my work is there.

“Genus Questionablus” 2017 Blackbutt (timber) I enjoyed beachcombing hoping to find some weird creature unknown to science washed ashore. I never did discover that elusive creature, so I created my own. Genus Questionablus is a combination of different species of marine life washed up and decomposing. The sculpture might ask questions about the state of our oceans, the Great Barrier Reef springs to mind. Or is it a Fukushima fish somehow related to Godzilla?

“Having lived in Australia for many years, I don’t just rely on looking back to earlier times in New Zealand, I want my work to live in Western Australia too,” says Nic. I’m glad I grew up in the Wairarapa, although as a teenager, one would easily think that the exciting life was somewhere else. Not true! I have many fond memories of a childhood full of mixed emotions of joy and of the wonders of the natural environment. Feeling safe, yet being part of something far greater than myself.

I return home as often as I can because New Zealand is still my home. I visit my favourite sites to reconnect with places that mean something to me. An exceptional feeling, where my early life unfolded, where my bones were formed and where my imagination developed.

The land embodies a place and time in my childhood, a connected spiritual life of the mind that will last to the end.

I often want to move back home after visiting friends and family and the living land. Who knows! Perchance one day I will.

the Gold Coast Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame; Kaye with brothers Wuzz and Kervan.

Kaye and his brother Kervan and their wives attended the roadshow in Brisbane. It was a wonderful opportune moment to chat to shareholders in Australia and for them to share and to talk about their living and working in Australia.

There will be friends, whānau and shareholders in New Zealand who will remember Kaye and Kervan and would surely gain pleasure reading his story.

A descendant of Apikara Pouhiki listed as an original owner in Wairarapa Moana, Kaye is the son of Ivor and Rena from the Wairarapa and grew up in Taradale, in Napier. He attended Taradale primary and Napier Boys’ High School. He left high school and in 1957 Kaye served a horse jockey apprenticeship in Bulls for approximately five years and during that time, was the New Zealand leading apprentice for that entire period. After completing his apprenticeship, he rode freelance as a jockey in NZ. 1969-70 Kaye moved overseas to Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean 2,000km southeast of the African continent.

He rode there as a jockey for 2 seasons and then returned home to New Zealand.

January 1972 Kaye moved to the Gold Coast as a freelance jockey and has carved out a successful career riding a number of winners across the line. He then took up his trainers’ licence and based at the Pines Racing stables on the Gold Coast, has trained some top horses such as Forgotten Hero, Heroism, City Fair, Brighter Scene and Cool Credit.

He retired from the racing industry in 2007 having served fifty years registered in horse racing and as recognition of that service, Kaye, in 2016, was inducted into the Gold Coast Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame as a jockey and horse trainer.

It’s hard to imagine Kaye having any spare time with such an illustrious career in the horse racing industry but he finds time to play tennis righthanded and golf left-handed. Kaye and his brother Kervan both live on the Gold Coast and participate in many sporting activities.

Me haere tahi tātau ki mua – Moving forward together Facebook Posts Investigated We have been asked by a number of shareholders for the Committee of Management to clarify emails and Facebook posts by Mrs Vanessa Trueman (Te Whaiti).

Over the last few months Mrs Trueman has emailed WMI staff and members of the Committee of Management, and has made Facebook posts (private and public). The contents of her communications were inaccurate, not factual, and defamatory and designed to generate hostility towards the members of the Committee of Management, as well as senior staff.

In future, the WMI Committee of Management will take whatever action (including legal) is considered necessary for anyone who takes part in such activities.

“Work together, that was the message at a hui attended by over 100 Wairarapa Moana shareholders at Masterton on Saturday 12 August,” said Mr Kingi Smiler, Chairman of the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation (WMI).

The hui was convened by the WMI Committee of Management (CoM) to update shareholders and whānau on WAI 85 and the Crown’s Treaty Settlement process for Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa-Tāmaki Nui ā Rua. Shareholders expressed their continued support for the settlement of WAI 85 – Pouākani lands directly between the Crown and Wairarapa Moana shareholders.

Shareholders confirmed the need for redress for the Crown’s breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi through the 1940s and 1960s.

“One of our kaumātua spoke about “the Jacinda effect” which was a reference to the contributions at the hui of our young people. They told us to work together as one people and find a solution that addresses all Treaty grievances, and do it now,” said Mr Smiler.

“They want us all to move forward together as one people, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa.”

2018 SCHOLARSHIPS The Wairarapa Moana office administers scholarships on behalf of Papawai & Kaikōkirikiri Trusts.

Scholarships are available to students of Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa or Rangitāne o Wairarapa descent attending secondary school in New Zealand.

Both WMI and Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa-Tāmaki Nui ā Rua Trust (NKKWTNAR) agreed to meet to resolve this matter. Kim Workman was nominated as facilitator to assist and support this process.

Since the August hui, the WMI CoM has been working with Kim Workman to arrange a meeting with NKKWTNAR. The WMI CoM has also agreed to a request from NKKWTNAR for a co-facilitator, Rauru Kirikiri.

We are still awaiting advice from the Waitangi Tribunal on the timetable for our application for the return of lands around the Maraetai Dam.

Calving is well under way. The team has been very busy in the first six weeks of calving this year (eleven weeks in total for calving). With the continued improvements, the six-week in-calf metric (number of cows to calve in first six weeks) the team has been rushed off its feet. The WMI seventy per cent six-week in-calf rate is in the top ten per cent of the industry at present with plans to further improve that again this coming mating which starts the 23rd of October. The season closed off well on the 31st of May with the wintering programme delivered as planned. Cows returned home from grazing on the 15th of July and were greeted with good grass covers on their return. The whole of New Zealand has battled this winter with the high levels of rain. WMI was no exception. The pumice soils are forgiving and unlike other regions we are in set-up and ready for the Spring.

The annual Miraka supplier award evening was held in July.

It was a proud moment for WMI with eight awards handed out throughout the evening. Four farms received their grade free certificates, while the new award category for Te Ara Miraka was recognised. Te Ara Miraka is the farming with excellence programme. Four of the WMI farm teams went on stage to receive awards for making it into the top ten of the supplier base (there are 110 suppliers in total).

The Incorporation has had mail returned to the office for the following shareholders or trustees.

The overall scores of the top ten were in the ninety per cent and above range. That is an impressive result as it also returns financially to WMI with 20 cents per kilogram of milk sold on offer based on your percentage score. On average, WMI farms earned 17 cents of the premium with an average score of eighty-five per cent. The total Miraka supplier base average was fifty-nine per cent. WMI is seen as leading the way in farm excellence.

The focus for the next few months for the farms is calving and then mating. Calving finishes the 1st of October and mating starts on the 23rd of October, both very busy times of the year for our teams. The teams are all focused on improving their individual mating results but are also working closely with one another to collectively share their knowledge to better the overall WMI result. We look forward to updating the owners on this journey in the coming months.

I look forward to presenting the end-of-year results to the owners at the AGM in October and an update on progress.

Since the system change in 2013 year-on-year improvements have been made and there is a focus on continuous improvement in everything that we do across the business.

The hand-written inscription on the back of the photo reads; To Thomas Enoka, Kahutara, Featherston. J.J. Guest was the school teacher at Te One school in the Chathams and had previously worked in the Wairarapa. He was at Te Ore Ore school for about nine years before leaving in 1906.

50 Unclaimed Dividends Shareholder Bank Account Details Payment of dividends to shareholders living in New Zealand is made by way of Direct Credit to shareholders’ bank accounts.

A Direct Credit Account Form is available from the office if you need to provide new bank account details because you have changed your bank or your account has been closed.

Bank account details are required to be verified by the bank. The office cannot accept bank account numbers over the phone, fax, email or written by letter.

Shareholders living overseas will be paid by cheque unless the shareholder holds a New Zealand bank account and elects to have the dividend paid into the New Zealand bank account. Cheques must be presented at the bank within six months of the date of issue.
