The whānau of Pouakani Marae was pleased to welcome and host ngā wahine, ngā tane, ngā tamariki, ngā kuia from Wairarapa on April 17 – 19.

The weekend involved both combined and separate activities attended by both the men and women.

Saturday morning commenced with the whakapapa, history and tikanga programme led by Memory Te Whaiti.

Memory shared the journey of the recent Pouakani Marae rebuild. The Pouakani whānau added to the kōrero and shared their personal experiences of the rebuild.

It’s not often one gets the opportunity to participate in the building of a full Marae complex and the challenges and of building a Marae outside the rohe of our homeland of Wairarapa. Nolene Reti then went on to share her extensive knowledge of whakapapa and tikanga of Pouakani Marae.

For those wāhine who were up to the challenge, ventured out to the Pouakani Ngahere to trek to the world’s largest Totara tree.

It truly was an amazing walk through the dense, virgin ngahere.

Upon entry into the ngahere, one feels instantly enveloped in the spiritual essence of Tāne Mahuta. Beautiful tones of karanga rippled throughout the ngahere in acknowledgement of aroha and respect for Tāne Mahuta. Our trek wasn’t short of both tears and laughter and the heroine of the hikoi was our Nanny Frances. A real ‘go getter’.

A quiz was held Saturday evening, designed and hosted by Mike Kawana. The kaupapa covered concepts of mōteatea, whakatauk¯i , whakatauāk¯i , whakapapa, and tikanga. Again, great learnings, whakawhanaungatanga, laughter and of course a tad of cheating!! During the evening some of our wāhine and kuia were able to enjoy some pampering at the Hauora Kōkiri – Te Puna Aroha.

Although our wāhine programme included a host of hauora activities, it was unfortunate, given the circumstances, of having two kaupapa that we were unable to fulfil that part of the programme.

As kaikaranga our role can be very demanding and somewhat gruelling. Our journey over the past three years has certainly produced competent and confident kaikaranga. Our hauora kaupapa aimed to further empower our wāhine, to nurture, to align and to stand strong within te taha hinengaro, te taha tinana and te taha wairua.

So, as we journey forward as kaikaranga, may we take time to often reflect on Dr Rangimarie Rose Pere’s “Oneness” philosophy to evaluate our own state of wellness and continue to work on those components that need strengthening so that we may serve our Marae, in that role as kaikaranga for many years to come.

Whakakaha Paepae – Te Pou Pūmau Tangata i akonga ki te kainga, tūranga ki te Marae, tau ana A person who is taught at home, will stand on the Marae with dignity

There were many eloquent kaikōrero that adorned our paepae to uphold the mana of their people with pride, and with dignity. There, words easily weaved a story of metaphorical imagery, majestically fused together with whakapapa and tribal history but it was a domain not only reserved for men but women as well that were more than capable of blending the same articulate words as their male counterparts.

They lived in a world of learning where nothing else interfered with their daily way of life. A world of spiritual wisdom that was deeply interwoven within the realm of mātauranga Māori.

Their passing left a void that became difficult to fill. Changing lifestyles and the effects of social change and upbringing brought about the waning of traditional cultural hierarchies that had a detrimental effect on Māori society.

One of those areas that quietly became noticeable over several years was the declining number of kaumātua sitting on the paepae. Slowly, one by one, the degree of loneliness on many Marae started to show and it was the same brave concern that was shared by other tribal elders. For many reasons, there didn’t appear to be a sustainable succession plan in place, especially for the haukainga where there were plenty of cooks around the back but no-one around the front.

It is a situation acknowledged by Wairarapa t¯i puna Marae and one that was identified by Wairarapa Moana as an urgent need to help to alleviate the problem. The wāhine poupou karanga had answered the call and is a continuing success now heading into its third year.

Te Pou Pūmau The name is a symbolic territorial reference to ngā maunga tapu or specific landmarks or important features that whānau, hapū and Marae can readily identify to, with an unwavering belief, commitment and dedication that will remain indefinitely. As with the wāhine, the tāne programme is designed to help strengthen and to increase the number of kaikōrero on Wairarapa t¯i puna Marae. An appeal that related well with the Wairarapa moanatanga philosophy to:

1. Assist whānau to be capable, confident and strong within their own identity, culture and heritage as descendants of the original rangatira of the hapū and whānau of Wairarapa Moana; 2. Assist whānau to be knowledgeable about what it means to come from Wairarapa and Wairarapa Moana; 3. Make a contribution to the revival of waiata and tikanga; 4. Help create depth in our paepae across our Marae; 5. Strengthen whakapapa connections.

WAIRARAPATANGA: Pae Nekeneke is an accepted practise in some tribal areas where tribal orators move from Marae to Marae because of a shortage of kaikōrero for each Marae and during those important times of need. It is a tikanga that is shared among the six Wairarapa t¯i puna Marae.

1. Pouakani Marae (Mangakino) 2. Te Oreore Marae (Masterton) 3. Te Rangimārie Marae (Masterton) 4. Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae (Carterton) 5. Papawai Marae (Greytown) 6. Kohunui Marae (South Wairarapa)

Each Marae has chosen tāne willing and able and committed to take up the responsible role for their whānau, hapū, iwi and Marae. All intellectual learning is focused on the art of whaikōrero and all associated interactions and learnings.

That will in turn encourage our tāne to stand with confidence and to embrace their Marae and their pepeha, kōrero tuku iho and to instill pride that the rangatiratanga of their Marae is paramount.

A series of five wānanga have been held with the first at Te Oreore, August 2016 followed by Kohunui, Papawai, Hurunui-o-Rangi and Pouakani.

All our Marae have a history. The carvings tell the story of their existence, the whenua breathes life into them and they all operate differently during different situations. Either inside the whare or outside, it is those diverse tikanga practises that each Marae shares with all tāne with the utmost dignity and respect for each other.

Te Rito o Te Reo Karanga wāhine have also shared their cultural knowledge at each wānanga and the inherent roles applicable to both tāne and wāhine on their Marae during different occasions. This is all part of the whakakaha paepae kaupapa to strengthen our Wairarapa whakapapa connections and how we can all work together for the benefit of our Marae.

TE TUKUNGA IHO: It is expected our t¯i puna Marae will be suitably equipped with those they have chosen to up hold the mana of their Marae. They will have the necessary skills to stand and to speak with confidence and to have a clear knowledgeable understanding of whānau, hapū and Marae customary values and beliefs.

They will be able to comprehend and identify the main criteria for their whaikōrero within a number of settings.

They will be proficient in mihimihi, karakia, waiata and kōrero and as a united community, will provide leadership and direction and to advocate important issues for and on behalf of their people. They will also be the voice that will help to debate and to resolve disputes under tikanga Māori.

There are two wānanga remaining and it is expected a future ongoing programme will be set in place.

Hurunui-o-Rangi was once a thriving papakāinga settlement with the Marae being the main focal point where whānau and hapū would gather to wānanga, to hui, to celebrate and to mourn the passing of loved ones.

Nice, new healthy homes, safe and secure with doubleglazed windows, fully insulated with heat pumps to keep you warm convinced our kuia: “That’s what we want at Hurunui-o-Rangi.”

That all changed 1948 to 1954, when land was taken under the Public Works Act to build a new road that cut directly through the pā and papakāinga community, an injustice that slowly brought about the exodus of whānau to neighbouring towns and was a grievance that was heard by the Waitangi Tribunal.

A small committee was formed with the mandate received from Marae Trustees to get it done.

After many years, a dedicated handful of whānau have kept the fires burning with the wharekai being the last remaining papakāinga whare where once a large settlement thrived.

Therefore, papakāinga within the rohe of Hurunui-o-Rangi is nothing new and has always been the desire for whānau to want to live back on t¯i puna land, under the shadow of our maunga tapū and the protective gaze of our kaitiaki, te ngarara Parikouiti.

The new journey started August 2015 when Hurunui-o-Rangi was invited by Te Puni Kōkiri to have a look at Aorangi Trust papakāinga development in Hastings. With all our important decision-makers in the van, namely our kuia, it is what they saw that readily appealed to them.

So, to help us to navigate our way through the process, the papakāinga committee contracted the services of Paora Sheeran from Aorangi Trust. After all, it was best to have someone that fully knew the process that resulted in our application being presented to the National Housing Committee December 2015, a short four months later.

January 2016 our application was approved and a contract signed to undertake a feasibility study to assess and to evaluate the papakāinga project’s potential, with the added ability to build capability and capacity that will ensure a successful development. Attached to all this will be ongoing management of the project that will prove useful with other future developments.

A programme was put in place, a procurement process implemented to ensure the best delivery of professional services and positive interaction. From a Marae standpoint,

it was good working alongside Paora and to be involved, not only to learn and to observe the tricks of the trade but to ensure that our traditional practises and beliefs would not be compromised.

A financial modelling plan kept us behind the eight ball and with ongoing engagement with service providers, planners and designers, the papakāinga committee satisfied with all improved changes were able to tick all the boxes and to present a complete feasibility study report to the National Housing Committee.

November 2016 a funding agreement to install and establish agreed infrastructure for six houses and to build six affordable rental homes for eligible whānau on Marae reserve land was signed off. A proposed start date was floated and before anything could start, the Marae Trustees wanted to have a pōwhiri for all the contractors that would be involved in the build.

The pōwhiri brought together qualified tradies and whānau and whanaunga alike that work in all areas of the building industry from electrical engineers to supply merchants with representatives from Te Puni Kōkiri and other professional services present. It was a huge gathering with a number of kaimahi waewae tapu.

All work to be undertaken will be on the Marae reserve and for tangata whenua it was very important to impart upon our guests the cultural importance our Marae means to us and the traditional practises that shape our lives and with respect and appropriate behaviour, the cultural environment they will be working in.

The tapu from our manuhiri was removed, the whenua was blessed and the turning of the soil by our mokopuna, the next generation brought everyone together to become one with tangata whenua.

Monday 24 April 2017 was the start date for the papakāinga development for four three-bedroom homes and two two-bedroom homes to be built on Marae reserve land.

Miraka agreement in Malaysia a milestone In our March issue we brought you the launch of Miraka’s consumer brand Whai Ora. Today we provide an update on the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with Malaysian distribution partner Storiiu.

Miraka, owned by a majority of Māori trusts and incorporations, with its staff and suppliers is often referred to as the Miraka whānau and has now launched in Malaysia with another whānau company, Storiiu, formed by brother and sister, Brian and Chemmy Tam. Miraka is New Zealand’s first Māori-owned dairy processor and the signing of the agreement means Miraka will start exporting its first own-branded consumer product Whai Ora. The agreement was evidence of Māori innovating and moving products and services up the value chain, forming long-term international partnerships and building economic value for the future.

The Māori Development Minister and Associate Minister for Economic Development, Te Ururoa Flavell, witnessed the signing of the agreement between Miraka chairman, Kingi Smiler, and its Malaysian distribution partner, Storiiu, in Kuala Lumpur mid-May. The Minister is reported as saying….

“I congratulate Miraka on their progress and on the contribution it is making towards lifting incomes and providing aspirational role models for other Māori exporters.”

“It also shows the power of whānau collaboration and commitment. Investing in relationships and playing a long game is fundamental to Māori core values and this is an important part of any export strategy.”

“This is an example of Māori leading with the principle of kaitiakitānga (guardianship of the land, its people and environment) and shows the positive response this approach is receiving in international markets.”

Storiiu will distribute the smoothie brand Whai Ora into Singapore, Philippines, China and Malaysia on behalf of Miraka. The smoothie, with all ingredients sourced around New Zealand, will also be available in New Zealand in the near future.

Hi, my name is Brooke Gibson and I was a Wairarapa Moana Trust Future Leader’s scholarship recipient for three years from 2014 to 2016.

I have lived in the Wairarapa rural community all my life in the Gladstone district. I went to Gladstone School throughout my primary years and completed my secondary education at Wairarapa College. I boarded at Wairarapa College hostel from year 9 to year 12 and commuted to college from home in my last year.

To be honest, I had a lot of trouble deciding on what I wanted to do when I left college. I was tied between whether I do something in the Hospitality industry or Agriculture industry. I enjoyed both subjects at college but in the end I decided to do a Hospitality Management degree at Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec).

The degree I chose was very versatile with regards that it was business management based. I find that a lot of people get confused and think that Hospitality is just cooking but in fact it is not. There are so many other roles within Hospitality that consists of learning all aspects of business management using hospitality examples that ranged from, learning how to deal with customers, marketing and accounting, human resource management along with tourism and restaurant and hotel management.

My degree will open a number of doors that will allow me to learn more about the business management side and will prove very useful for any future employment opportunities.

The WelTec campus is based in Cuba Street, central Wellington and is connected to Le Cordon Bleu. The campus is very small, is very central and is only a 25min walk from Wellington Railway Station. The bus stop is nearby along with shops and food outlets right at your door step. I loved being at WelTec. All lectures were presented in a classroom style environment; staff are very hands-on and very helpful and they have a very strong learning support system in place. My class consisted of twenty other students and we could ask questions throughout all lectures.

The Wairarapa Moana Trust Future Leader’s Scholarship was very helpful in my three years of study. It helped me to commute to WelTec three days a week and helped to fund needed textbooks. A huge big thank you for your help and support.

I am currently working at Café Strada in Masterton in a Front of House position. I enjoy working there and am learning so much and would like to one day manage or to own my own café or to look at a career in Event Management.

I recommend to any secondary students that have a whakapapa to Wairarapa Moana and wish to continue with further study after college to apply for a future leader’s scholarship. Death is never easy to announce and we will all find ourselves in this position some time in our lives.

There are instances when the office is unaware of a shareholder having passed away and so correspondence and the Wairarapa Moana Mailer continues to be sent to the deceased shareholder.

On some occasions whānau members have become upset when mail addressed to their loved one continues to arrive at the address on the share register.

It would be greatly appreciated if whānau could let the office know of shareholders who have passed on. Give us a call so we can update the share register and support the whānau to succeed.

The Wairarapa Moana brand has certainly gone global. The Golden Shears website homepage features the 2016 Wairarapa Moana Māori-Pākeha shearers decked out in their WM colours for the world to see.

It’s the same on You Tube, bring up the Golden Shears and the drop down box on the right features the same photo. “Nurturing our taonga,” yes, that’s what it’s all about.

The computer board played a few tricks describing the ethnicity of their Pākeha shearing mates as “Moari” which raised a few eyebrows amongst the whānau but was quickly spotted by one of the commentators that struggles with correct Māori pronunciation but promptly had the spelling corrected.

“Wairarapa Moana, he continued, backing their locals, their culture. Big, big camaraderie shearing when it comes to the Māori and Pākeha shearing alongside each other all day.”

The shearers inspected their sheep, took their stand on the board and waited for the start which is nothing more than a simple: “Shearers ready… go!”

The commentary is just as entertaining as the shearing.

The season is nearing an end.

It has been a very challenging season for a number of reasons, weather being the biggest challenge. The spring was slow and cold then it came out dry and was looking like a drought. That was saved by the early autumn rains. Since those rains we have seen a number of major weather events with the cyclone, however, the team has responded well on farm and will meet budget production. This production will be 250,000 kilograms of milk solids more than the previous season.

The reproductive results have also been positive with an increase in a 6 week in calf rate and a reduction in the empty rate. Both are good results with the rest of the industry regionally and nationally appearing to move the other direction.

The preliminary results for Te Ara Miraka are in and WMI farms are in the top 10% of suppliers. There had been a lot of work put in by the teams to excel in Te Ara Miraka and they have taken great pride in meeting the standards and delivering the result for WMI. We farewell a number of staff at the end of the season with the normal movements within the dairy sector. It is exciting to see a number of staff stepping into senior roles for the coming season to replace those departing. WMI is always looking for junior staff to come into the farm operation to one day step up into senior roles. The key success factor we see in those achieving this is their desire to excel in the dairy

industry and their drive in their day-to-day work. Should you know anyone wanting to make a career of dairy farming please let us know.

Forest Update The forest harvest is complete for the season with the budget being met dollar wise. Area wise they were behind in the scheduled harvest with the wet weather. It is pleasing to note volumes were higher than expected of the areas they harvested and this ensured budget was met. We expect the harvest to continue in the Spring and look forward to presenting the budget farm forest income at the AGM in October.

Two Degrees Update It is public knowledge now that Two Degrees has been sold and listed on the Canadian stock exchange. WMI now own a share in the listed company. This was the original strategy in the investment plan. All the current owners in Two Degrees have participated. The current results for the listed group are looking positive and it is expected to see the listed price track upwards over time.

Overall the results for the year will be ahead of the budget presented to the owners at the AGM in 2016. The increase in milk price has been a key driver.

50 Unclaimed Dividends Shareholder Bank Account Details Payment of dividends to shareholders living in New Zealand is made by way of Direct Credit to shareholders bank accounts.

A Direct Credit Account Form is available from the office if you need to provide new bank account details because you have changed your bank or your account has been closed.

Bank account details are required to be verified by the bank. The office cannot accept bank account numbers over the phone, fax, email or written by letter.

Shareholders living overseas will be paid by cheque unless the shareholder holds a New Zealand bank account and elects to have the dividend paid into the New Zealand bank account. Cheques must be presented at the bank within six months of the date of issue.
