The Aotearoa New Zealand Māori Business Leaders Awards were launched in 2003 by the University of Auckland Business School to recognise and celebrate outstanding Māori excellence and success and to mark the achievements of Māori business leaders.

Two outstanding business leaders both with absolute success within the agri-business industry and whakapapa to Wairarapa Moana, scooped the top awards.

Kingi Smiler, Ngāti Kahungunu, Te Aitangaa-Māhaki, Te Atiawa and Tūhoe descent was named the supreme winner at the University of Auckland Business School’s Aotearoa New Zealand Māori Business Leaders Awards held in Auckland.

A chartered accountant and former partner with Ernst & Young in New Zealand and Canada, Kingi holds a number of directorships within the agri-business industry and was awarded the Federated Farmers 2013 Allflex Agribusiness Person of the Year for his gifted business leadership.

Māori Woman Business Leader Award

Kingi acknowledged Miraka winning the inaugural Māori Excellence in Export award He kai kei aku ringa as an outstanding achievement. An inspiring award that was presented at the New Zealand International Business event held at Sky City Auckland.

Associate Dean of Māori and Pacific Development Dr Chellie Spiller said:

“This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership characteristics including strong vision, inclusive management, governance skills, altruism, humility, taking a longterm view and making collaborative decisions for the common good. Kingi is everything the award personifies and is a worthy recipient following in the footsteps of those winners gone before him.”

Kingi joins a prominent list of previous Māori business leader award winners, such as, Sir Howard Morrison for entertainment, Peter Loughlin (business), Rob McLeod (economics), Brett Hiirini Shepherd (banking), Peter Cooper (business), Dame Kiri Te Kanawa (opera and classical music), Sir Ralph Norris (banking), Chris Mace (business and science), Ian Taylor (television and special effects) and 2013 winner Lisa Carrington for elite sports.

From the shearing shed to the corporate board to lead some of New Zealand’s major companies to success comes as no easy task but with a whānau philosophy of “can do” Mavis has proven that commitment and dedication can make dreams come true.

Mavis Mullins, Rangitane, Atihau-nui-a-Paparangi and Te Arawa was named Business Woman of the Year at the Aotearoa New Zealand Māori Business Leaders Awards.

Mavis holds a number of primary sector directorships. She is the chair for Poutama Trust and Hautaki Ltd, the New Zealand shareholder within 2degrees Mobile. She is also the chair for Atihau Whanganui Incorporation and Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre Wairarapa, a founding Patron of Agri Women’s Development Trust and a board member of Global Women NZ. She was a past chair of Aohanga Incorporation, a 7300ha farming station south east of her home town, Dannevirke.

Her latest award comes after last year being made an Honorary Associate of UCOL while, in 2012, she was a member of Government’s workplace Health and Safety Review Taskforce.

“The landscape has changed with the advent of Māori asset management, we are talking really serious assets,” she said. “What comes with that is the opportunity to be awesomely positive and be a really constructive contributor to the New Zealand GDP.” Mavis has been described as a Māori economic activist, a strong believer in Māori self-determination with a dedicated commitment to the preservation of Māori-owned land, which stems from the belief that Pākeha see land as an asset to buy, sell and trade while Māori respect land as a taonga, held in perpetuity.

The decisions made at the board table are long-term decisions, not made for the present but for the future because the next generation are our mokopuna. And their mokopuna and theirs… and on and on it goes. Most Māori land owners will tell you with a smile, “We’re going nowhere, we’re here forever.”

Māori Excellence in Export Award Hon. Te Ururoa Flavell presented Miraka with the inaugural Māori Excellence in Export award He kai kei aku ringa recently at the 2015 New Zealand International Business Awards in Auckland.

“It’s great to celebrate the giants of the Māori economy like Miraka, Sealord and Kono that make a significant contribution to the Māori and national economy,” says Mr Flavell.

The Māori Development Minister and the Associate Minister for Economic Development Mr Flavell says the Māori economy is now valued at over $42 billion and growing fast.

“These Māori exporters prove once again that culture and commerce can go hand in hand,” says Mr Flavell.

Taupō-based Miraka is the first company in the world to use renewable electricity and steam to run milk powder processing operations. It manufactures UHT milk products and milk powder to twenty-three countries throughout Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific and Latin America.

“Miraka has deep connections to its local community, a commitment to the sustainable use of natural resources and an understanding collaboration with other entities gives them a stronger market presence,” says Mr Flavell.

The price premium Miraka pays its milk suppliers has seen an additional $5 million injected into the local rural economy over the past three years.

“It is also committed to running a business that is underpinned

by Māori values and that demonstrates the value of the Māori Inc. brand,” says Mr Flavell.

Finalist Kono is based in Marlborough and represents owners from local iwi Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Rārua, Ngāti Tama and Te Ātiawa. They produce high quality wine, fruit and seafood and export to more than twenty-five countries.

The other finalist Sealord is one of New Zealand’s largest seafood companies with a global network that spans seven continents. They export around $500 million worth of seafood annually and employ around 1100 people.

The He kai kei aku ringa award is supported by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Te Puni Kōkiri and The Treasury.

Our home for two days.

Whakanui – Celebrate, Maumahara – Remember, Tū atu – Fight Back A hum of activity settled over Clareville, Carterton as groups set up camp, pitched their tents, put up their signs, stretched and bent their bodies into shape ready for the Relay for Life opening ceremony.

The event is one of the principal fundraisers for the Cancer Society, with teams raising funds to support people living with cancer in the community.

Hurunui-o-rangi Marae was invited to formally open the Relay for Life with karanga led by Charmaine Kawana and whakatau mihi / karakia led by Henare Manaena with members of the Cancer Society of New Zealand supporting the formal greetings with the waiata – Te Aroha.

After the opening ceremony, cancer survivors and caregivers took the first steps onto the track, guided with a rousing haka performed by Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa.

Te Kupenga ō ngā hapū o Hurunui-o-rangi Marae certainly describes the many hapū and whānau that whakapapa to the Marae and over the years have lost important kuia, koroua and kaumātua to mate pukupuku (cancer). They were the voices of our people, the holders of our heritage and whakapapa, traditional customary rites and our history.

Their presence made us the people we are today. So it was an honourable symbolic wave of emotion that we wanted to remember them.

We also have whānau that have survived cancer and so we wanted to celebrate their courage and determination and the overwhelming support from whānau that gave them the strength to overcome their illness.

They took on amazing lifestyle changes, they fought back and here they are today, still bossing us around. But it’s when we don’t hear their voices that we realise the huge void they left behind.

few laps, one could easily measure their fitness level. But it wasn’t about the quickest time or the number of laps but the enjoyment of pacing it out with family and friends with impatient mokopuna doing two laps to your one.

More FM radio shared the stage with a variety of singers and groups that pumped out the sounds nonstop. Teams dressed for the occasion, clowns with flashing lights decorated the track, cookie bear did his dumpty doo, kids dressed up as their favourite super hero, hi-vis vests promoted different organisations, the Beverly Hillbillies minus the shotgun stepped it out, painted faces and colourful wigs masked the shy and when the evening temperature dropped, blankets cloaked the night walkers to signify that cancer never sleeps.

For Hurunui-o-rangi Marae, we had a large turnout of whānau from all ages that showed up all hours of the day and night and took their turn around the track, with a few seniors literally rocking it.

The top team boasted 544 laps and we made the top 20 out of 50 teams having completed 200 laps, thanks to our mokopuna who upped the ante during the final hour. Next time, whānau are determined to better our record.

All up, the community spirit was electrifying with the Cancer Society raising over $115,000.00.

Nomination forms will be available from the Wairarapa Moana office from Friday July 31, 2015 and nominations will close Friday August 21, 2015 at 5.00pm.

Candidate profiles, postal and electronic voting papers will be distributed to shareholders, with a current address on the share register, by Friday September 11 and postal voting will close Wednesday September 30, 2015 at 5.00pm.

Postal and electronic voting will be available for the election to the Committee of Management. Shareholders who attend the AGM and did not vote by postal or electronic vote can vote on the day.

WAIRARAPA MOANA TRUST Te Miha Ua-Cookson and Anaru Smiler will retire by rotation at this year’s Annual General Meeting. Te Miha is not available for re-election. Anaru has confirmed he is available and will stand for re-election.

Te Mauri o Matatini Ngāti Kahungunu took the mauri into safe keeping in Christchurch as hosts of the upcoming kapa haka event in 2017.

The mauri, encased in a carved box travelled safely aboard the double-hulled canoe Te Matau a Maui from Rapaki Bay in Christchurch to Wellington.

The mauri arrived at Aratoi, the Wairarapa Museum of Art and History and after a challenging wero performed by Mau Rākau Wairarapa, te Mauri o Matatini, the life principle of Te Matatini Kapa Haka Aotearoa was passed into the care of Kahungunu ki Wairarapa.

Whānau, hapū and iwi representatives from Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa and Rangitāne o Wairarapa were all in attendance at the pōwhiri with kapa haka groups from Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa and Makoura College supporting the kaupapa.

The mauri travelled around the Wairarapa “to light the fire of kapa haka”, before continuing its journey throughout the Kahungunu rohe to Tamakinui-ā-rua (Dannevirke), Waipukurau, Wairoa and Tauranga.

Kahungunu ki Wairarapa manager Paora Devonshire reiterated that the last Wairarapa kapa haka roopu was Te Puke ki Hikurangi from Papawai that performed at the 2006 Rangitāne regional kapa haka competitions but the last Wairarapa kapa haka roopu to perform at the kapa haka nationals was Whānau Whānui from Masterton back in 1994. The mauri, a small coloured rock originates from the Ruahine Ranges and was gifted to Te Matatini by Rangitāne o Manawatu about 2005. The larger stone is Tuhua (Obsidian) and was gifted to Te Matatini 2009 by

the people of Tauranga Moana. Tuhua is the kaitiaki for Te Mauri o Matatini. Accompanying the mauri is a photo of the late Ngāti Kahungunu leader Tama Tūranga Huata.

Tama Huata was an internationally recognised expert in Māori performing arts and was at the forefront of the renaissance of Māori performing arts in the early 1980s. He was the inaugural chairperson of Te Matatini Society Inc. and under the guidance of Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu, led the overall change to what is now Te Matatini.

Tama was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2006 in recognition of 35 years’ service to Māori performing arts and was considered an international expert in indigenous arts. Tama Tūranga Huata passed away February 2015.

The first Matatini festival was held in Rotorua in 1972 and the last time Ngāti Kahungunu hosted the event was 1983. Thirty years on Ngāti Kahungunu will once again host Te Matatini in February 2017 and everyone from Marae, to schools, to businesses and local authorities will be invited to participate in a mass pōwhiri. It is also expected that Kahungunu kapa haka groups from throughout the rohe will once again grace the Matatini stage.

Wairarapa REAP (Rural Education Activities Programme) took up the challenge to bring to life Paora Ammunson’s vision of a Kapa Haka Academy that inspires self-esteem and mana in our youth as well as provide them with leadership opportunities in their school.

Wairarapa Moana Trust supported the academy by supplying each participant with a copy of ‘Nau Mai Taku Kura Mokopuna’ to take home. Kapa Haka and the Academy are a nice fit with the Trust’s ‘Moanatanga’ portfolio, in particular ‘revival of our waiata and stories’.

The inaugural Wairarapa Kapa Haka Academy took place at Wairarapa College on Wednesday 15 April and culminated in an emotion-packed performance on Friday 17 April 2015. Forty-three students from across the Wairarapa and Tararua took the opportunity to wānanga with top local and national tutors in the areas of mau rākau, patu, poi, haka, voice and choral production, advanced Māori movement and composition.

Mihirangi Hollings, a Wairarapa Moana trustee who visited the academy on and off during the three days said “the shift in āhua of the rangatahi from day one to day three was huge.

My highlights were watching the rangatahi stand with pride and confidence in their final performance and seeing tears from whānau watching their tamaiti”.

Wairarapa REAP academy manager Makuini Kerehi was pleased with the number of secondary students from

throughout the region and indicated that kapa haka tutors were looking for prospective members to form a Wairarapa kapa haka group to compete at regional level.

The tutors and keynote speakers for the inaugural Kapa Haka Academy included seasoned performers Mihirangi Hollings, Aporonia Arahanga and Kereama Te Ua with tutors Manu and Mikaera Kawana, Francis McNally Te Maari, Pam Robinson, Hone Hurihanganui, Lily Arahanga and Shari Taylor all shared their knowledge and experience over three intensive but enjoyable days.

Wairarapa REAP works in collaboration with a number of organisations which include iwi and hapū and with a key focus on developing future leaders, the academy may encourage a student to pursue a career in Māori performing arts and as they grow and develop in their chosen career, they will become the tutors that will provide kapa haka tuition and competition among secondary schools in the region.

Te Mauri o Te Matatini – the principle life force of Te Matatini Kapa Haka Aotearoa took pride and place at the academy to instil the spiritual relationship that all living things on earth have with each other.

Ngāti Kahungunu from Mahia in the north to Wairarapa will host the 2017 Matatini Festival in Hastings and groups from throughout the Kahungunu rohe are being encouraged to enter. The kapa haka academy is only the beginning but it would be awesome to have a Wairarapa group on the Matatini stage.

As a long and warm summer/autumn period comes to an end, I hope the preparation for winter is going well for all whānau.

I’m wearing my ‘health professional’ hat as I write this message and have just put down the latest report on the rheumatic fever prevention programme currently being implemented throughout Aotearoa. Rheumatic Fever starts with a sore throat (strep throat) and can lead to major heart problems if not dealt with in the early stages. There is a lot of advertising and awareness-raising around this issue currently, so I’m sure most of you have read or heard something about rheumatic fever. The most important message to remember is that ‘sore throats matter’. If anyone in the whānau has a sore throat, get to a GP or school clinic and report it. The nurse or doctor will take a swab of your throat (simple and painless process) and test for the bacteria.

If you are positive (you have the strep bacteria), you’ll be put onto a ten-day programme of antibiotics. It’s important that you take the antibiotics each day for ten days.

Winter is a particularly tough time for whānau and for our tamariki. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to keep everything and everyone warm and dry during winter.

Not only are sore throats more prevalent but influenza viruses typically spread rapidly over the coming months too.

Influenza viruses change and adapt each year and we can get two or three different strains circulating at any one time. It is best that you get the ‘flu jab’ each year. These are available from your doctor or GP at no or minimal cost. The aim of the flu jab is to protect you from the strains of flu that are circulating. We know what these strains are because we have watched the other half of the world as they have gone through the last six or so months of winter. The flu strains that have shown up in the northern parts of the world will now make their way down here to the southern parts (global air travel is one way that the strains move quickly to other parts of the world). See your doctor about a flu jab this winter. If needles are really not your thing, go along to a doctor anyway and explain your apprehension. Believe me the jabs nowadays are painless and simple and the needles are not like the 2-foot long ones you remember from the 60s!

In other news: Trustees met with Wairarapa Moana Incorporation board members in Rotorua on April 16th.

The purpose of the meeting was to ensure that both boards meet annually for a catch up and discussion on planning and strategic matters. The discussion followed on from the Wairarapa Moana trustees Planning Day at the end of February this year so it was a good opportunity for trustees to talk with the incorporation about the various projects currently underway as part of the work programme for 2014/15 and leading into 2015/16. These include the continuing Whakakaha Paepae programme for wahine Māori and the planning for a similar tāne Māori paepae programme for 2015/16.

The Wairarapa Moana Trust Board has invited chairpersons of each Marae to our next hui in Masterton. This is for the purpose of a meet and greet and to ensure our continuing relationships are kept strong and productive on behalf of all Wairarapa Moana whānau.

To finish, I have included some information about a cultural competencies course currently available through Te Rau Matatini in the South Island. As you can see this is a course for beginners and is focused on those working in public health. If that is you or you know of any whānau members who should attend please utilise the contact information provided at the end of the message. If anyone has information about other courses suitable for our whānau, please let us know and we will endeavour to provide that information in upcoming reports.

CULTURAL COMPETENCIES COURSE Expanding understanding of Hauora Māori.

Kaitiaki Ahurea is a two day interactive course that aims to strengthen cultural competencies across the public health workforce. It is delivered by Te Rau Matatini in the South Island and is registered with NZQA as a level 2 Training Scheme.

2015 Golden Shears

Like regular clockwork, whānau start jostling around finding the best seats before the Wairarapa Moana Māori-Pākeha Shearing event kicks off. Above each stand is a TV screen with the Wairarapa Moana logo on proud display. “That’s us,” yells out one of the whānau.

Six shearers all teamed up, a Māori and his pākeha mate each take their stands. They have eight sheep each to get through. The announcer calls out, “Shearers ready?” There’s no starting gun to send these guys on their way, just a simple “Competitors… Go!” With a first prize of one thousand dollars up for grabs, they’re all off to a flying start with the speedsters shedding the wool in under a minute. You wouldn’t think you would have time to work up a sweat because in less than ten minutes it’s all over.

Immediately after was the prize-giving and while the scores were being tallied, MC Kieran McAnulty had a word with the shearers and asked Tama Niania, “What’s it like shearing Māori Wardens on duty at the Shears.

For the winners, $500 each is not too bad for ten minutes’ work. When Jack Fagan was asked the same question he replied: “Next year it should be Māori verses Pākeha” which received a round of applause. It used to be like that but this is what we have today.

The season is near complete.This season is very much a different story to last. Payout is the major factor and is proving to be a challenge.

As this article is being written, the Fonterra payout is $4.50.

Miraka Limited pay a 10c premium above the Fonterra payout so we are expecting a $4.60 payout from Miraka.

Last year we saw an $8.40 record payout which translated into a record profit for WMI. This season also offered another challenge in the form of a drought. The level of the Mangakino River was the lowest on record (records dating back 50 years). The team has become expert in dealing with droughts and employed its proven strategies to combat the dry. Production will fall just behind budget for the season and even with the drought, costs are in line with the budget. The risk we will continue to face is the milk price volatility. The strategy to move towards a lower cost system 3 has proven to be the right decision with this low payout environment.

The farms are currently looking at drying off their cows for the season and will send them off to our dairy support farms to be winter grazed. Ropiha and Ford Roads will graze 5000 cows between them over a six-week period. Those cows will be looked after by Thomas and Alastair our DSU Managers with the support from each of the dairy managers as they check on the winter progress of their cows. Setting the cow condition right for next season is such an important part to any dairy system.

What happens from February to July is so important. The body condition of cows needs to be protected or you will compromise the next season’s production and reproduction results.

Kaharoa continues to progress and Scott (our Kaharoa Manager) has been a real asset to WMI by managing day-today and over-seeing that development as well. Scott hosted the Committee of Management (COM) there in April to update them on the progress. They were impressed on the development of the new asset and this will be proven in the pending valuation due at 31st May. Ford Road is continuing and the first 37ha has been placed back into grass and is capable of being mown next season for silage. There is still 250ha to clear and this is a 5-year project that will see Ford Road fully developed and productive.

The COM was hosted in April by the management team to partake in a Health and Safety workshop. H & S is a real focus of WMI and as an organisation we want to be seen

to lead the way in keeping our people safe. Farming does present a number of hazards and the COM was able to see how our teams deal with those day-to-day hazards.

The farm teams are set for next season and we are pleased to announce that two fine young men Apiana Te Tau-Quin and Mana Hohepa have been appointed as dairy farm assistants and will begin their careers in dairy. Both young men know they have a lot of hard work ahead of them and both have committed to that path. We will watch their progress with interest.

The management team looks forward to communicating the 2015 results in October to the shareholders.

The collection of customary waiata, karakia and tauparapara from Wairarapa contain the unique stories and words of our ancestors. They also tell our whakapapa and philosophies and are a vital cultural resource for all Wairarapa tangata whenua. Set yourself a personal challenge to learn as many of the waiata as you can!

50 Unclaimed Dividends Shareholder Bank Account Details Payment of dividends to shareholders living in New Zealand is made by way of Direct Credit to shareholders bank accounts. These shareholders no longer receive cheques.

Shareholders living overseas will continue to be paid by cheque unless the shareholder holds a New Zealand bank account and elects to have the dividend paid into the New Zealand bank account.

Cheques must be presented at the bank within six months of the date of issue.

A Direct Credit Account Form is available from the office if you need to provide new bank account details because you have changed your bank or your account has been closed.
