During the visit the Ambassador saw milking in process, testing and milk tanker transfer and then visited the factory to see the milk powder and UHT plants in action.

represented all major players in Chinese business interests in New Zealand.

Mayor David Trewavas said that Miraka is a source of pride for the Taupo district. The company is new and fresh on the local scene and is having a positive impact on the local economy, with the UHT plant obviously adding value to the company.

He said the Miraka company values, “nurturing our world” was also representative of the Taupo regional philosophy.

He noted the new model of nitrogen-reducing farming techniques means that the water quality of the lake should improve despite intensification of farming in the district.

Mayor Trewavas said hosting the Chinese Ambassador’s visit was an exceptional experience and a chance to demonstrate the region, share ideas and highlight a local success story.

Kuia, a name when uttered within tribal circles, immediately raises the thought of an elderly woman.

Within Māori society kuia are also known as kaumātua and over the years have acquired exceptional knowledge and life experiences only they can talk about.

Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History in Masterton is hosting a photo exhibition aptly titled Kuia. Photographer Kiri Riwai-Couch (nee Matthews) embarked on a three-year journey to photograph Wairarapa kuia or ‘our nannies’ as she affectionately calls them. Twenty-nine black and white portraits, set against a dark background and dark clothing captures the subtleness, the mana and wairua of each kuia.

Their facial expressions portray a life of dignity, pride and astuteness.

from those early days, the Matthews whānau has grown up with whānau, kuia, koroua and kaumātua and as such, her subjects warmly welcomed her into their homes and shared their life experiences with her. They are the matriarchs that have helped and guided her throughout her life and continue to do so with her children. They are the leaders in our community and the portraits are but a small token of her appreciation to those that have nurtured and inspired her over the years.

This is Kiri’s first photo exhibition and her subjects couldn’t have been more challenging. Working with kaumātua can be quite trying, especially when they don’t like to be told what to do, which can often invoke a grumpy reply. But living among them, knowing who they are was the key to gaining their confidence.

One of the aunties commented about her portrait, “Well here we are together! It’s a wonderful feeling all of us being together like this. Probably won’t happen again. Oh well, at least I’m in good company.”

You didn’t need to sit in the stadium to smell the air or to add to the excitement because Golden Shears 2014 went hightech with live streaming of the event going global.

The 54th Golden Shears, a New Zealand institution, began on Thursday 27 February with three days of fierce competition that kept the crowds entertained from start to finish. The big screens zoomed you into the action and it didn’t matter what time it was

overseas, it seemed like the whole world was tuned in with their text messages of greetings and support showing up on the screen.

Early dawn, families of all ages from Te Whiti, Maungaraki, Hurunui-o-rangi, Longbush and the wider Gladstone area assembled at the northern end of the memorial oaks. A tradition that was started some years ago where the assembled commence their commemorative march through the avenue of remembrance to the Maungaraki War Memorial.

Greeting old mates, Māori and Pākeha, friends and relatives, was conducted under gas lamps, hand-held lanterns, torch light and smart phones. From a distance the flickering lights created a visual sensation of calm. Murmuring chatter warmed the air, hurried footsteps joined the group and a refreshing breeze swept through the trees to signal time.

In the past, local author and artist Pat White normally led proceedings but his absence fell on the shoulders of local farmer Jamie Strang. He offered a small greeting before commencing what has become an established, commemorative march in the dark through the memorial

All in attendance were there for their own reasons, young and old to remember the sacrifice of those brave soldiers that lost their lives during WW1, to remember the loved ones that paid the ultimate price during WW2 and to commemorate all those New Zealanders that served and died in all theatres of war.

Soldiers from Linton Military Camp, under the command of local resident Major Dan Wildy, stood as guards of honour along the way. Arriving at the memorial the service was handed over to another local resident Colonel Nick Thornton – Retired. The New Zealand flag was at half mast, poppies and wreaths were laid and a recording of the last post was played.

A minute’s silence seemed to last forever. People turning off their torches signaled the arrival of daylight. Hurunui-o-rangi whānau were invited to breakfast at Jamie’s but the large gathering, soldiers and all seemed to be heading there as well. You can’t help but proudly think that the whole service was truly local with next year being the 100th anniversary of ANZAC. We took our leave as silent as we had arrived. Discussed ideas on the way home for next year’s big celebration but with the memories of our loved ones that never came home firmly in our thoughts.

Wairarapa Moana Trust

Kia ora koutou We hope this finds all whānau in good health as we enter into what some are saying will be a moderate winter this year. Fingers crossed.

The trustees have met three times this year to carry out their duties as kaitiaki of your development funds. So far this year we have approved all Future Leaders Scholarships; agreed a way forward with the additional $20,000.00 of education/training funds decided at the AGM 2013; agreed a proposal that will support twelve wāhine to achieve the goals and aspirations of the Wairarapa Moana Trust and the Whakakaha paepae initiative; and agreed attendance at marae monthly meetings to advise of the Wairarapa Moana Trust 2014 funding for marae development.

At this point we acknowledge the tremendous support given and received by the Wairarapa Moana office. Without their goodwill and hard work, we would not be able to report on half the things we do today. Ngā mihi aroha kia koutou ngā kaimahi o Wairarapa Moana House.

Future Leaders Scholarships This year like others has seen a high level of applications from across the country. Out of a total pool of $40,000.00 we have allocated $38,000.00. These went mostly to tertiary applicants who numbered 53 in total (36 were approved).

We were disappointed to only receive 2 applications for trades/apprenticeships this year. Of those two we are going back to one for more information, to ensure the applicant can access the funding. Unfortunately we cannot do this with all applicants. Some of the reasons why we cannot support applications include: poor exam results; application criteria not met; part-time courses; and incomplete application forms. Trustees agree that the application forms are not difficult to understand and complete in full but would advise any applicants to seek out their whānau for assistance if they find it difficult.

Bridging Fund The Wairarapa Moana trustees wish to advise that a Bridging Fund is now available with part of the $20,000.00 of education/training funds agreed at the AGM 2013. The aim of the Bridging Fund is to allow any member of the Wairarapa Moana whānau to apply for funding up to a maximum of $1,000.00 to undertake a course of training that will assist them to take the next step in their careers. Examples from a couple of pilots include: training and completing a heavy duty driver’s licence in order to apply for better driving roles; contributing the remainder of course costs to savings so the whānau member can enrol and begin the course earlier than expected. These are one-off grants outside of main scholarships. Normal criteria applies, for example, funds will be paid to the course provider not directly to the applicant.

Wairarapa Moana Wāhine A proposal that acknowledges the importance of our Kaikaranga and Kuia has been approved by the Wairarapa Moana Trust. The programme on the sacred art of karanga, will focus on the return to our Wairarapa and Pouakani marae to increase the knowledge of our Kaikaranga in regards to hau kainga and ahi kaa. On completion the Kaikaranga will be confident in their roles and responsibilities and able to contribute in a meaningful way to all marae. The funds for the first two modules will be provided from the surplus of the 12/13 Grant ($24,500) plus a portion of the 13/14 Grant ($1,600). For further information please contact the office.

Marae Development Please keep an eye out for one of your trustees at your next marae monthly meeting. Your trustee will advise of the Wairarapa Moana Trust 2014 funding for marae development.

Other We are looking at ways to improve promoting, targeting and mentoring students for trades and apprenticeships. Any suggestions would be welcomed by the trustees. If you see the advice provided recently by the Trust in relation to trades and apprenticeships (last Wairarapa Moana Mailer) you will understand the need to find a way to attract our people into these fields and to provide support. Please contact Te Miha Ua-Cookson if you have any suggestions about how we can do this.

Trustees are keen to see another Rangatahi wānanga (perhaps early next year). It has been suggested that we look at holding it at Mangakino with a field day at the farms. Discussions are continuing.

Taupo’s newest and most colourful tourism attraction, the Lava Glass Sculpture Garden at Wairakei was officially opened by the Prime Minister John Key. Whilst in town, the Prime Minister visited a number of prominent businesses and checked into the Wairarapa Moana office to get an update on Chinese Ambassador Wang Lutong and his entourage’s visit to Miraka and Wairarapa Moana Farms.

This is the second article outlining the timeline of Wairarapa Moana activities – the first was printed in issue 33.

1916 The Crown vests the Pouakani

block to 230 relatives of the original owners of Wairarapa Moana.

1943 Preliminary work begins on the Maraetai hydro dam on the Waikato River on the Pouakani block.

1945 A road is built from Tokoroa to

Pouakani (the first road access to the Pouakani block) and the construction of Mangakino begins.

1947 A Māori development scheme is established on Pouakani. The Government approves funds to develop 2000 acres of Pouakani land for farming by its owners.

1949 The Government approves the

permanent acquisition of 787 acres of Pouakani land for hydro works and agrees to lease 683 acres of land required for the Mangakino Township from its owners.

Coping with a Psychological Illness A common face around Masterton busking and singing his own songs, Roy made the comment, “I can’t sing other people’s songs because people may criticise me for making mistakes, so I write and sing my own songs.” His songs have a laidback blues feel that tells his story in a number of short regular stanzas and mixed with a progressive reggae strum, his songs resonate a blended fusion of rhythmic soul.

The son of Ngarongoa Watene, Roy was born in Martinborough and carries the proud name of Roy Walker Wetinoanoa Russell. The youngest of a family of thirteen, Roy lived with his uncle Rangi and aunty June Araiti at Pirinoa.

He attended Pirinoa School alongside heaps of cuzzies before moving to live in Christchurch with Gary and Moana Mita. Roy attended Waltham School then Hagley High before returning to Featherston where he finished the remainder of his education at Kuranui College.

At a young age, Roy had an unsettled life and faced each new experience with calm acceptance. His first job was at Andersons Mill in Featherston and not long after he moved to live in Masterton with Diamond and Liz Watson and found employment at Robertshaw Controls making energy-efficient thermostats.

He was described by a number of his former work mates as a perfectionist. “Roy was the only male on the production line, the rest were all women and what really got up our noses was that none of his work was ever rejected. So we’d deliberately coax him into a race to see if he’d make a mistake and besides beating us, his work was perfect all the time.”

It was about this time that Roy was beginning to experience a broad range of unusual emotions that at first he found difficult to understand. Tinnitus is described as a ringing sound in the ears, that is what Roy started to hear. They reached a point where the annoying sounds had progressed to audible vocal phrases. Even inanimate objects became vocal and not knowing why these profound disruptions were happening, he tried to suppress them but this only diminished his ability to behave in a normal, relaxed manner.

A most trusted and reliable employee, Roy started to call in sick and remained at home trying desperately hard to come to terms with his altering character and behaviour. Being the sort of person that thinks things through with meticulous care, Roy struggled on his own to find the answers and hid away

in his room. The curtains were always closed, he hardly slept with his dark abode being the only comfort he could find. Lost in time, Roy became further disconnected with the outside world and while he was still able, he forced himself to seek medical help.

After many consultations, examinations and assessments, Roy was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“I’ve been crook before and knew that after a few days I’d be alright. But this was different, I wasn’t getting any better and started to feel scared. I didn’t know what schizophrenia was and when it was explained to me? Well…at least I know what it is and… yeah, I was still frightened.”

Schizophrenia in most circumstances is considered a lifelong condition. There is no known cure with the primary treatment being medication.

“I was put on drugs and the problems I faced were: • Different drugs turned me into a zombie • Some drugs had a terrible effect on me and others didn’t work at all • I experienced a lot of horrible things • Because I was zonked out, any easy work took me a long time to finish • I had to deal with shame and discrimination and as a result, I lost a lot of friends • Finding employment, anything, was impossible And after using so many different types of drugs with all the bad and ugly effects, I was finally prescribed the right medication which made the world of difference.”

Schizophrenia doesn’t discriminate and strikes without regard to gender, race, social class or culture, which eventually made Roy accept where he was at because, only then, could he begin to heal and overcome his illness.

It taught Roy a lot about life, about people that don’t understand, where he developed an empathy with all that suffer with whatever illness they have. It taught him to respect those that respect him in return. A key ingredient to his well-being was when all myths and negativity about his illness were dispelled. As a result, he benefited enormously when family and friends began to understand his illness.

Kaihaumanu Rehia are skilled and qualified diversional therapists that design therapeutic programmes tailored to the specific needs of individuals. They provide a range of services to health service providers, rehabilitation centres and private consultants and it was a diversional programme that gave Roy the ability to draw strength from within himself in order to forge ahead to a healthy normal life.

Active therapy improves mental health, helps prevent depression and helps to maintain positive self-esteem. So keeping fit and healthy has Roy serving up aces on the tennis court, spiking returns to his volleyball opponents, doing it hard on the basketball court, bending it like Beckham in soccer and dazzling the goalie on the hockey field. And to relax, he enjoys a quiet game of ping-pong.

Music was a pastime that Roy liked to listen to but couldn’t play so he purchased a guitar and with extraordinary patience taught himself how to play. Keeping his mind active with something he likes and enjoys has helped him to overcome his illness. Another active part of his life is poetry. Writing poems about anything good eventually evolved into song.

“It’s about feeling good about yourself, he says, that keeps the bad away.”

Roy has earned the respect from a number of noted musicians and has been invited to perform at a number of venues around the district. He is also a member of the Wairarapa Country and Western club and is a regular busker in Masterton and Wellington.

Roy also attends King Street Art in Masterton, an organisation that uses art as a healing medium through the use of creative expression. His art works have been described as geometrically abstract, that demonstrate a facade of geometric lines, colours and shapes. Attention to detail requires a very steady hand and a considerable amount of time and effort in order for him to synthesize and process exactly what he’s thinking because it’s what he can see that nobody else can.

Some of his work can be described as “Revolutionary” because if you rotate his work either left or right, from whatever way you view it, it still looks the same. There is no top, no bottom and no sides.

Roy’s art work is not generally titled because he feels his art speaks its own visual language. He has exhibited locally and in Wellington where a number of his works have sold.

Roy has strong cultural views about te hinengaro (mind), te tinana (body) me te wairua (spirit). Every morning his day begins with karakia. His daily course of travel, art and music revitalises and maintains the life essence of his mind and body.

He learnt early in life about whanaungatanga, the value of inter-relationships with whānau and extended whānau. But it was the passionate journey that he undertook to research his whakapapa that now bonds him to his ancestral lands, to his Marae, hapū and iwi. For Roy, it’s his heritage, his identity and the uplifting power that places him firmly in Te Ao Turoa – the Enduring World.

“I think the best expert for my illness is me because I’m the one that’s in complete control of who I am, what I do and where I go.”

Like every morning, Roy ends his busy day with karakia.

Makirikiri Aggregated Trust Farm Visit In 2010 Makirikiri set about farming ten Māori-owned land blocks as one complete farming unit. The Trust owns almost 450ha of mixed farming land north west of Mauriceville, Masterton.

As part of the Trust’s cultural values and land aspirations, Makirikiri aims to introduce young Māori to their lands and to encourage them to seek careers within the farming industry.

Early April, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa visited the farm. There were eleven tamariki and six pakeke including their kaiwhakahaere for the day, Geoff Clark.

Mr Hohepa Tatere gave a traditional mihi whakatau supported by Trustee Richard Tatere and Farm Manager Dave Schofield and wife Joan.

Everyone partook of morning tea in the shearing shed before boarding a bus to North Road where tamariki visited the two calves they purchased last year.

across the farm to another paddock.

Afterwards tamariki gathered pinecones and filled twelve bags for the school to use.

After lunch, tamariki played around the farm yards, fed Issy the horse, feasted on wild black berries with others trying their hand at catching tuna. The Kura then planted two kowhai trees by the woolshed which they named Aromea and Tutahi.

Two more visits are planned in June with the Kura intermediate and the senior pupils in October.

Federation CEO Te Horipo Karaitiana and Chairman Traci Houpapa were among a group of Māori business leaders to attend a ‘Boot Camp’ at Stanford University last year, an event promulgated by NZ Merino Limited, Te Tumu Paeroa’s Jamie Tuuta and supported by NZ Trade and Enterprise, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the Callaghan Institute and Te Puni Kōkiri.

They found the week-long course extremely worthwhile both in terms of the design-think concepts and strategies they were introduced to and the opportunity to spend time with other Boot Camp participants, who represented an interesting crosssection of Māori business.

2014 Elections WAIRARAPA MOANA INCORPORATION Ron Mark and Te Horipo Karaitiana will retire by rotation at the Annual General Meeting to be held in Carterton on October 18, 2014. Both Ron and Te Horipo have confirmed that they are available for re-election to the Committee of Management.

Nomination forms will be available from the Wairarapa Moana office from Friday August 15, 2014 and nominations will close Friday September 5, 2014 at 5.00pm.

Candidate profiles and postal voting papers will be distributed to shareholders, with a current address on the share register,

by Friday September 19 and postal voting will close Wednesday October 15, 2014 at 5.00pm.

Postal voting will only be available for elections of members to the Committee of Management.

There have been several get-togethers since Stanford. Recently the Māori Boot Campers joined with the Primary Sector Boot Camp and were hosted by Tuaropaki Trust at Mokai. The two-day programme included a tour of the Trust’s present activities and enterprises by CE Steve Murray. Also included in the programme was a presentation from the NZ Venture Investment Fund and a presentation from Main Freight CEO Don Braid.

Traci says the follow-on events to Stanford have been very informative and presented a good opportunity to connect with Māori and agri-business leaders.

Our first challenge was a tramp through the beautiful native bush in Marlborough up to high vantage points that looked out across The Sounds, learning as much as we could about each other and ourselves personally. Our destination was Mt Duncan which took us seven days to get to.

Outward Bound October 2013 On the 29th of September I headed off in the mail boat from Picton to Anakiwa with a group of strangers that would turn into a group of mates with whom I will have a lifelong link with from the experiences we shared that nobody else would understand.

I had twenty-one intensive days filled with an abundance of challenges to overcome. On day one we had a comprehensive orientation day learning about Anakiwa and the Queen Charlotte Sound. And then it was all go and didn’t stop until we were dropped off at Picton ferry to go home.

I completed a wide range of activities throughout the twentyone day course like tramping, kayaking, rock climbing, sailing, rowing, community service, high ropes course. I ran five kms per day and on the last day we had to do a half marathon. Not only had I been physically exhausted I was also mentally exhausted and it felt great completing every challenge to the best of my abilities. I thought it was an experience of a lifetime, not only did I push my boundaries I found out what my limits were and extended them out as far as I could.

I accomplished what I had set out to achieve and have met twelve friends who are irreplaceable and this has made me want to go out and pursue more challenges in life. This was the best twenty-one days of my life (so far) and I will cherish all the memories and friends I had made at Outward Bound.

I would like to thank Papawai & Kaikōkirikiri Trusts for giving me the opportunity and experience of a lifetime to go to Outward Bound. I would strongly recommend anyone to go to Outward Bound as it is life changing and made me feel good about myself and appreciate what I have. Again my thanks because without your scholarship I would never have gained the leadership and confidence that Outward Bound has provided me with. Thank you.

Taueru is 12kms east of Masterton on the Castlepoint Road. In the early days, Taueru was quite a large township and boasted of a hotel, a smithy, post office with the only phone line to Masterton. Just off the main road is St Alban’s church and a Māori pā, which of course was home to a large Māori community.

The wharenui often doubled as a church, a community hall where dances were held, whānau weddings and was a stopover when relatives from the coast travelled into town and when they returned home.

There was also a twice-weekly mail and passenger service to and from Masterton.

Season end is here.

At the time of writing this article the farms are well on their way to exceeding their targeted production. The season will see the farms delivering just over 4,080,000 kilograms of milk solids (budget was 3,866,000). This is off the back of another drought. This drought was worse than last year simply because it was a longer period of dry starting earlier than last year. The irrigation proved to be a great investment and ensured the cows continued to milk right to the end of the season. The farms will deliver a record profit under the new system 3 and are in great shape for the start of 2015.

1st of June will see Wairarapa Moana take on some new managers for the dairy and the dairy support unit. New managers to be appointed are Mathew McFlaryn – Farm 4 (formerly from Linton, Manawatu), Leighton Swan – Farm 1 (formerly from Toko in Taranaki) and Thomas Rutene – Block Manager Ropiha Road and a Wairarapa Moana descendent. All three young men bring their young families to Mangakino and will be getting their heads into their new roles and becoming familiar with the district. We welcome them all and their families to Wairarapa Moana.

We also welcome Dan and Michelle Bryce on to Farm 2 as the new sharemilkers replacing Daryn and Moana Russell. We thank them for their six years with Wairarapa Moana and wish them well in their goal of farm ownership.

The Lamberts block came back under our possession 1st June and as previously advised will be joined on to the old Farm 4 to form the new larger Farm 4. The shed build has begun on farm and will soon be up and running for the season. Farm 3 was merged with Farm 5 to form a larger unit as well and the shed build is a few months ahead of Farm 4 at this stage.

The irrigation season closed 30th April and there was a sigh of relief heard over the WMI Farms as the rains arrived to almost time with switching off the system. The weather has yet again been kind with mild days allowing the covers to get back up before we start the new season. Had it been a cold and wet May things may not be looking as promising as they are.

Shed Build

Year end is here and the office team and farm team are busy compiling the annual accounts and preparing the budget for the 2015 season. Stock counts and audits have been done and we look forward to reporting to you at the AGM, the 2014 results for the farms.

50 Unclaimed Dividends Shareholder Bank Account Details Payment of dividends to shareholders living in New Zealand is made by way of Direct Credit to shareholders bank accounts. These shareholders no longer receive cheques.

Shareholders living overseas will continue to be paid by cheque unless the shareholder holds a New Zealand bank account and elects to have the dividend paid into the New Zealand bank account.

Cheques must be presented at the bank within six months of the date of issue.

A Direct Credit Account Form is available from the office if you need to provide new bank account details because you have changed your bank or your account has been closed.

Bank account details are required to be verified by the bank. The office cannot accept bank account numbers over the phone, fax, email or written by letter.
