The World Blade Shearing Champs lost a bit of its gloss when four-time winner, Zingesele Elliot Ntsombo, from Lesotho, could not travel to New Zealand because of visa issues.

His absence was a big disappointment because it was the royal match-up that everyone wanted to see, Zingesele and three-time winner, Zweliwile Hans from South Africa battle it out for the coveted World title. No guessing then that Zweliwile Hans was the hot favourite to win and that he did in exceptional style.

Winning the World Individual title, Zweliwile clipped his seven sheep in twenty-one minutes and behind in second

place and helping to retain the World Team title, was teammate Mayenzkeke Shweni. Two minutes behind in third place was New Zealander Mike McConnell with his teammate Brian Thomson coming in fourth. Gareth Owen from Wales took out fifth spot with Scotland’s William Craig claiming the final sixth winning place.

Golden Shears Pōwhiri Italy, Sweden, Estonia, the Falklands, it was hard to imagine that twenty-five foreign countries from around the world had arrived in Masterton for the 2012 World Shearing Championships and the 52nd Golden Shears contest.

Four busloads of manuhiri travelled to Te Oreore Marae to be welcomed to the Wairarapa by tangata whenua.

Accompanied by ngā Wātene Māori, manuhiri were quietly instructed as three kaiwero advanced cautiously towards them. Armed with ceremonial weapons with threatening gestures and scowling facial expressions, two hundred manuhiri resplendent in their national uniforms and waving their flags were experiencing their very first Pōwhiri.

After being tested by the kaiwero and the symbolic offering uplifted, the karanga sounded out strong and loud to clear a spiritual pathway between tangata whenua and manuhiri.

Pāeke te kawa, top kiwi shearing commentator Koro Mullins replied for the manuhiri. Golden Shears President Mavis Mullins stood to sing the waiata and glanced around at those ‘kiwis’ sitting amongst manuhiri in the hope they would support her.

Certainly not afraid to lend their voices was former world wool handling champion, Aroha Garvin, now living in Australia and former Greytown man, Neil Perry, representing Norway and Welsh wool handler, Gwenan Paewai. The Cook Islands team with kiwi connections stepped up to the mark which, in many ways, added an international flair to the waiata.

With two hundred plus puku to fill, Te Oreore easily catered for the large gathering with some team managers receiving a special invitation to join ringa wera at their table. Not often manuhiri get the chance to sit among the Crown Heads of the kitchen but such was the privilege given to some of our overseas visitors.

Rugby World Cup Arrives in Masterton

Papawai & Kaikōkirikiri Trusts Scholarship Hui The 2012 secondary school scholarship hui was held at Papawai Marae on Saturday 14th April.

A wee bit of moisture in the sky wasn’t going to put anyone off as they flocked to the park to see the William Webb Ellis Cup and if you were lucky enough, to have your photo taken alongside the gleaming trophy.

The Rugby World Cup traveled around New Zealand as part of a ‘thank you New Zealand for your loyal and dedicated support’. Keeping the cup company was the IRB Women’s World Cup, the Junior World Championship Trophy, the Bledisloe Cup and the Sevens Cup. However, not many people had the opportune chance to actually hold the Cup but one lucky person was Paul Jason (PJ) Devonshire; one of many mokopuna to Rangitekaiwhiria (Lali) and Ida (nee Namana) Reiri.

The proceedings got underway with a welcome to twenty students and their whānau from Papawai & Kaikōkirikiri trustee, Taiawhio Gemmell, after which whānau were introduced to trustees and certificates recognising the scholarship recipients were presented.

It was then on to the coaches for transportation to the Trusts rural properties, Hikurangi Farm and Papawai Farm where the historical signage was

dedicated by trustee, Archdeacon Hariata Tahana and a brief presentation of the history was given by trustee, Waitohiariki Quayle.

A light lunch was provided at Papawai Marae after which the recipients and their whānau departed.

Whāngia ka tupu, ka puāwai.

That which is nurtured, blossoms and grows.

Graduation Successes JANE HOPKIRK

Jane Hopkirk graduated with a Master of Philosophy in Māori studies at Massey University in November last year.

Her research was driven by her links to her ancestors and followed the advice of her great, great, great grandfather John Milsom Jury who said to Whatahoro his son:

My son, I want you to trace your ancestors. On this subject I will not be of any help to you. Take heed of what your elders will pass on to you, digest them thoroughly then record them in writing (Jury, 1877).

In looking to my ancestors I saw a man able to walk in two worlds and engage one to support a Māori view. This gave me the courage to consider how effective occupational therapy could be in delivering health service to Māori and how it could be strengthened (Hopkirk, 2010).

A consideration of culture in occupational therapy practice from a Māori world view using a kaupapa Māori methodology was reflected on in this research. This explored Māori health and occupational therapy

perspectives to identify areas to align to a Māori world view when working with Māori service users and areas of difference. Occupational therapy is a health profession that enables people to participate in activities of meaning in communities of meaning despite illness, disability or injury (Hopkirk, 2010). The concepts of holistic care, the value of spirituality, being driven by client-centred practice and using the links to whenua and the environment were joint views of significance. The limitation of the occupational therapy profession indicated in this research was understanding the significance and implications of working from a whānau driven view.

On September 29, Papawai will celebrate the contribution it has made as a vehicle for discussing Māori rights and the positive impact it has had in the development of our nation. Titled “Hui Kotahitanga”, Papawai will once again play host to Wairarapa whānui, local dignitaries, Māori politicians and political and iwi leaders.

Initial plans were to commemorate the opening of the sixth sitting of Māori Parliament at Papawai on April 14th.

Expectations were that around two hundred guests might join us in these celebrations. After close to five hundred expressed an interest in attending to the organising committee, and humbled at the level of awareness other iwi have regarding the rich past of Papawai, the decision was made to defer the hui until Saturday September 29th 2012.

This date celebrates 115 years since the conclusion of the sixth sitting of Māori Parliament at Papawai.

Papawai also accommodated the seventh sitting of the Māori Parliament in 1898. Other sessions of Pāremata Māori were held at Waipatu (1892 and 1893), Pakirikiri (1894), Rotorua (1895, 1900 and 1901), Tokaanu (1896), Waitangi (1899) and Waiomatatini (1902). During that decade, the emphasis of Pāremata Māori, the creation of a Māori forum under the umbrella of the Kotahitanga movement, was on the retention of Māori land and for more recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Hone Heke Ngapua, the Member of Parliament for Northern Māori and a staunch supporter of Kotahitanga, tried on three occasions (1894, 1895 and 1896) to introduce to the House of Representatives the Native Rights Bill. The proposed legislation was said to have encapsulated the wishes of the Kotahitanga movement by asking for a constitution for Māori, the protection of Māori rights under the Treaty of Waitangi and for Māori to have their own Parliament that could legislate for Māori. Some of those wishes, although strongly argued to have been severely weakened, were incorporated

into the Māori Lands Administration Act and the Māori Councils Act of 1900.

During the time of Pāremata Māori, Papawai became dubbed as the “Māori Capital” of New Zealand. This was mainly due to the construction of the largest Māori building of its time, the two-storied, purpose-built houses of Aotea, Te Waipounamu and Potaka Kuratawhiti. The day prior to hosting the sixth sitting of Pāremata Māori, on April 13th, Wairarapa whānui officially opened the building. The Otago Witness reported: “A parliamentary building has been erected of a semiMāori design. A large entrance door leads into a spacious sleeping compartment, which was used for the opening ceremony. Here the walls were draped with oil paintings of defunct and present chiefs and other interesting mementoes. At the rear of this large hall, which extends over an area of 90ft by 30ft, are two double doors giving entrance to a huge dining hall…From here a large staircase leads up into a spacious hall 90ft by 30ft which is to be the debating compartment. A corridor and balcony overlook the public apartment”.

and the ability of not only politicians but the Premier Richard John Seddon, to regularly visit the location and discuss issues of the day with Māori.

Hui Kotahitanga will be a special day, not only for Papawai but for Wairarapa whanui. Apart from the richness of the kōrero, our wharenui “Hikurangi” will assume the temporary purpose of being a whare taonga. Taonga from Aratoi and Te Papa will be on display including the walnut voting box of the lower house from the first sitting of Pāremata Māori at Waipatu. Life-size reproductions of portraits taken of tī puna from the Wairarapa will be gifted to the marae and copies of photographs, manuscripts and records pertaining to Papawai and Pāremata Māori will also be handed over. The pōwhiri will recreate the kawa that was in place in 1897 including the use of a brass band and the flying of flags that have not been seen in the Wairarapa for some years.

Following Hui Kotahitanga, Papawai will open its doors for the wider Wairarapa community on Sunday 30 September, to view the taonga on display and to learn the rich history of Papawai.

Wairarapa balloonist Rick Walczak and a team of enthusiasts made the most of near perfect conditions during Easter to take Iwi the Kiwi on its maiden flight over the region. Crowds gathered at Solway to see the seven storey high Kiwi hot air balloon take to the sky and on board was Wairarapa Kaumātua and past Wairarapa Moana Trust Chair, Pani Himona.

Deed of Mandate Hui From Auckland in the north to Christchurch in the south, including: Blenheim, Wellington, Palmerston North, Mangakino, Hamilton, Gisborne, Napier, Dannevirke, Masterton and Papawai in between, we have completed our 12 mandating hui around the country seeking a formal mandate to represent your interests during settlement negotiations with the Crown.

We had 338 attendees, 229 of which were eligible to vote. 222 voted ‘Yes’, 5 ‘Abstained’, and 2 voted ‘No’.

This demonstrated overwhelming support for the Trust to continue to progress negotiations of your historical Treaty claims with the Crown, on your behalf. The Trustees would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who attended the mandating hui.

We appreciated receiving your questions at the hui and trust that the explanations provided addressed your queries. Next Steps Te Puni Kōkiri, which had a representative present at all hui, has given the Trustees the ‘tick’ to receive mandate once the Crown and Trustees have worked through a few issues that remain regarding the claimant definition.

The mandate will be advertised for three weeks once it has been approved by Crown officials. During that time people will have the opportunity to make further submissions in response to the mandate.

Those submissions will be considered by Crown officials and the Trustees. When all parties are satisfied, the Minister of Māori Affairs and the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations will consider the mandate for approval.

Once the mandate has been approved by both Ministers, the Trustees will develop Terms of Negotiation with the Crown and begin formal negotiations by early 2013.

The Next 12 Months On 17 March 2012 the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations advised the Trust of the Crown’s new priorities for 2012 and that the Office of Treaty Settlements now has limited resourcing dedicated to the Trust’s pre-negotiations activities this year. Although this news was disappointing, the Trustees are taking a positive approach to use this time to further engage with the various hapū karanga and prepare for formal negotiations with the Crown early next year. The issues to be considered over the coming 12 months will be the issues raised by you the claimant community during our mandating hui.

This will include: 1. Holding Hapū Karanga and Wai Claimant meetings to gather feedback on the issues that you would like addressed during negotiations and to identify suitably qualified people to negotiate those issues with the Crown on your behalf.

2. Seeking your views on what the post settlement governance entity may look like. The post settlement governance entity will be the organisation that will receive and manage the assets from the settlement.

3. Continuing overlapping claims discussions with the Rangitāne Settlement Negotiation Team and other iwi, including: Muaūpoko, Rangitāne o Manawatu, Te Atiawa, He Toa Takitini, Tuwharetoa and Maniapoto.

4. Conducting further investigations with the Rangitāne Settlement Negotiation Team regarding an on-account Crown offer of the former Masterton Hospital site.

5. Developing Terms of Negotiation with the Crown. The Terms of Negotiation are the rules agreed to between the Crown and the claimant group regarding negotiations. It sets out the standards of behaviour and the key objectives of the negotiation process.

6. Working closely with the Crown Forestry Rental Trust on funding matters, gap filling research, developing the historical account and completing all mapping requirements.

Registration Process If you are descended of any of the hapū listed and you are a registered member of the Trust, you will be entitled to benefit from the Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa – Tāmaki Nui ā Rua settlement. You can tick any number of the hapū listed which you affiliate to. However, you must tick one hapū karanga only and you will only be eligible to vote for that hapū karanga Trustee to represent you. You can

view the full hapū list and download a copy of the Trust’s registration form from the Trust’s website.

Registration forms will be checked by the Trust for its completeness. We have noticed a number of errors reoccurring in the registration forms being returned. To avoid delays please check that you have completed and signed the form correctly. If you are having difficulty with any part or parts of the registration form then please contact us for assistance.

Registration numbers will soon be sent to all those people who have sent in successful registration forms.

Your interests as a beneficiary of the Trust and the interests of the Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa – Tāmaki Nui ā Rua claimant community as a whole are best served by a large united membership base. Please encourage whānau to register.

Wairarapa Moana Hapū Karanga By-elections The Wairarapa Moana elected Trustee, Kingi Smiler and the elected Alternate Trustee, Mark Rutene, are unable to fill these roles. The Trust will be calling for nominations for filling the Wairarapa Moana Trustee and Alternate Trustee positions.

Voting in the by-elections will take place in June/July 2012 in accordance with process set out in the second schedule of the Trust Deed. You can download a copy of the Trust Deed from the Trust’s website or you can contact us to have a copy of the Trust Deed posted to you.

Those who are not registered with the Trust will not be eligible to vote. If you know anyone who is an eligible member but who has not yet registered to vote then please encourage them to register.

Farm update Record Production and Significant Projects On farm we are nearing the end of another season and can report that this year will set new production records with over 4 million of milk solids (compared with 3.6 million last year).

The New Zealand Museum Awards are presented to individuals and organisations that achieve excellence in the museum and gallery sector in New Zealand.

The exhibition category attracted the largest number of entries and among the finalists was: He Pātaka Kai, He Pātaka Kōrero, the stories about Wairarapa Moana and its people.

The Wairarapa Moana exhibition staged at Aratoi, Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, was an exceptional and challenging story about a revered taonga of cultural and spiritual importance to Wairarapa Māori.

Up against some of the biggest museums in the land in the same category, “He Pātaka Kai, He Pātaka Kōrero” was always going to struggle.

But making the shortlist of fifteen exceptional exhibits is recognition by the judging panel that small galleries with limited resources can certainly foot it with the big boys in terms of research, creative planning and design and the ability to curate to the highest possible level.

Thanks to good farm management and a favourable climatic season, all staff are to be congratulated for the efforts they have put in to achieve these results.

The focus for the teams now is to look forward to the next season with good planning and preparation firmly in place.

On top of the current operational results there are a number of significant projects in progress. The most significant project relates to the irrigation implementation of 1,000 hectares on the 3,500 hectares of the dairy unit. This project is on track to be completed for the next season which will result in 17 individual pivots on the dairy farm.

The first season with Miraka processing our milk has gone without a hitch and this from an investment point of view is very pleasing. The respect and appreciation for Miraka within the community is very strong and Miraka is well organised for the coming season.

The only area of concern for the farms is that currently the payout for next year is lower than the current season and this will reduce the profitability for the Incorporation within the next financial year. n Farm 3.

Middle Earth is coming to Carterton in the form of Sir Ian McKellan but not as everyone’s favourite wizard Gandalf. Leaving his pointy hat and sturdy staff behind in Wellywood, Sir Ian will be performing a one-man show in ten New Zealand centres to raise funds to restore the earthquake-damaged Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch. Sir Ian will be on stage at the Carterton Events Centre, Sunday June 24 at 2pm.

A painting of Papawai paramount chief Te Manihera Rangitakaiwaho was presented to Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History. The painting dates back to 1890 and is a Gottfried Lindauer copy by artist, J Hebley. Carlene Manihera-Te Tau, a sixthgeneration descendant of Te Manihera, was keen to have the painting on display for everyone to enjoy.

It was a noticeable towering landmark that couldn’t be missed. Anyone driving along State Highway 2 through Carterton had no choice but to admire the 120-year-old giant redwood. Standing at a height of 25m, it was deemed a potential danger due to its age and increasing lean. Tree arborists, with the help of a crane, cut the giant redwood down to ground level and is now more noticeable... for not being there.

A torrential downpour flooded Masterton and as a result, tuna were seen swimming along flooded street gutters. Jermaine Kerehi, the grandson of Hiona (nee Haeata Kuku) and the late Red Kerehi filmed his discovery and posted the video on his Facebook page.

Within hours his video went viral with international news inquiries coming from as far away as the USA, UK, Japan, Finland and Australia. When the floodwaters receded the tuna were returned to the Kuripuni creek with the help of Jermaine’s uncle, Heta Kerehi. “You don’t see the big ones (tuna) anymore so these ones deserved a second chance”.

A weather bomb dumped a bucket load of water on the March Martinborough Fair which forced the organisers to cancel what is now a nationally recognised annual event. Having second thoughts, the organisers decided to take a chance and re-run the fair in May. Fingers crossed, a good fine day arrived along with 20,000 visitors and with 460 stalls showing off their wares, there was something there for everyone.

People like sauce on their chips, sauce in their sandwiches and sauce on their veges but sauce on the road? Workmen have come across lots of unusual things on the road and now they can add Hollandaise sauce to the list. An errant farmer transporting the sauce over the Rimutaka hill had no idea he was adding flavour to the road, in turn making it very messy and slippery.

Cleaning up the mess caused a few headaches for workmen and fortunately motorists were very careful and added a few tasty quips along the way, “Wow, those guys (workmen) look rather saucy”.

Serving 25 years with Masterton’s Breadcraft Bakery sounds pretty good but seven staff with the same length of service certainly speaks heaps for the company. At a special function, all seven staff were presented with commemorative plaques in recognition of their long service. Breadcraft co-owner Peter Rewi said the company places a high value on all loyal staff and the seven recognised have been instrumental in the company’s success and growth.

50 Unclaimed Dividends Shareholder Bank Account Details Payment of dividends to shareholders resident in New Zealand is made by way of Direct Credit to shareholders bank accounts. Shareholders resident in New Zealand no longer receive cheques.

Shareholders residing overseas will continue to be paid by cheque unless the shareholder holds a bank account in New Zealand and elects to have the dividend paid into the New Zealand bank account.

Bank account details are required to be verified by the bank.

The office cannot accept bank account numbers over the phone, fax, email or written by letter.
