There was a sense of excitement among those who gathered for the Miraka Opening on Saturday 3rd December 2011 at Mokai. Around 750 people attended including representatives from Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Kahungunu, Tainui, Ngapuhi, Maniapoto, Ngāti Porou, Tauranga Moana, Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Ngai Tahu, Te Arawa, the Māori Land Court, shareholders, suppliers and a delegation from Vinamilk headed by Chairwoman and Miraka board member, Madam Lien. The opening of the state-of-the-art $90 million plant at Mokai was marked

with a pōwhiri; the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, by Taini Wright and Robert (Kim) Workman, representing Wairarapa Moana and Karaihe Rotarangi and Lila Andrews, representing Tuaropaki; speeches; a walk through the dry-store area where people could observe the pelletising robot at work, followed by the hakari and entertainment.
