There was a sense of excitement among those who gathered for the Miraka Opening on Saturday 3rd December 2011 at Mokai.

Around 750 people attended including representatives from Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Kahungunu, Tainui, Ngapuhi, Maniapoto, Ngāti Porou, Tauranga Moana, Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Ngai Tahu, Te Arawa, the Māori Land Court, shareholders, suppliers and a delegation from Vinamilk headed by Chairwoman and Miraka board member, Madam Lien.

with a pōwhiri; the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, by Taini Wright and Robert (Kim) Workman, representing Wairarapa Moana and Karaihe Rotarangi and Lila Andrews, representing Tuaropaki; speeches; a walk through the dry-store area where people could observe the pelletising robot at work, followed by the hakari and entertainment.

Our kapa haka group from Wairarapa Moana along with a team from Ngāti Whakaue entertained everyone and the Vietnamese delegation entered into the spirit of the occasion and performed a traditional Vietnamese song about the strength of collaboration.

Kingi Smiler, Chairman of Miraka, said it was an historic day and a very proud moment for all the shareholders involved with Miraka.

Trusts Board FAREWELLS TWO TRUSTEES Friday 2 December marked the end of an era for the Papawai & Kaikōkirikiri Trusts Board when long-serving trustees Michael Moore and Heather Marunui retired.

Michael Moore joined the Board in 1983, serving as Chairman from 1997 to 2009.

Heather Marunui first came to the Trusts during 1998, serving as Secretary-Manager until the appointment of Robyn Hawira in 1998 and further serving as a Board member from 2001 to 2011.

The Board farewelled Heather and Michael at a function held at Lansdowne House on 2 December where the Board welcomed past trustee, Turoa Royal (1982 – 2004) and his wife, Mary-Rose and other guests included former lessees Michael and Jocelyn Daniell (Akura); and current lessees John and Jan Rose (Hikurangi farm) and Bob and Christine Scott (Papawai farm).

Many good wishes went with Michael and Heather for a long and happy retirement.

Born and raised in Greytown, the youngest of five siblings born to Carl & Martha (Moko Hemi) Gillies.

Work life for Dallas began at age 11, after school and weekends at a dairy in Carterton. At 15 she had had enough of school education and began ‘life education’ in the shearing sheds as a “Rousie”! This took her all over New Zealand for many years. During the off-season she found work doing all sorts from market gardens and road surveying to Nannying and orchard work to name just a few. This was a much better education…Life skills and real-life experiences!!

Twenty years ago Dallas became a single mum to a beautiful daughter Trieste-Louise. She was a full-time hands-on mum becoming involved in the kindergarten committee, PTA, coaching sports and teacher aiding.

When Trieste-Louise was eight years old and well and truly into school life, Dallas gradually got back into the workforce part time.

When the Mangakino Township Incorporation and Pouakani 2 office came to Wairarapa in 2000, she worked as Administrator part time. In 2001 an opportunity arose where Dallas applied for a two-year contract and was successful to the position of Office Manager for Te Rūnanga O Wharekauri Rēkohu Inc. The motivation for this was a chance to discover, learn and get to know a large ‘missing link’ in her whakapapa. So within two months she relocated with her baby and mother to a life

unknown 44˚S (Lat) in the Pacific Ocean, the Chatham Islands.

Leaving the Chathams in 2003 and returning to Wairarapa, Dallas was eager to keep moving so in early 2004 she and her daughter headed to Sydney, Australia.

They stayed for seven years, Trieste-Louise’s whole high school life! This life for her was eye-opening due to the diverse culture groups and ethnicities in Australia and she became more aware of how different their lives were in comparison to New Zealand. Dallas had an assorted array of employment roles from data entry to warehouse logistics and was employed with Australia Post in retail for a couple of years before returning to New Zealand in 2010.

Since being home, Dallas has worked part time and casual in the food industry i.e. grading apples in Greytown and cooking fish and chips in Martinborough! So when the position of Administrator for Wairarapa Moana came along, she thought ‘why not’? She’d done it before and if it happens, it happens! Fortunately she was the successful candidate and this is now where you will find her! She is enjoying working with the team, Charmaine, Henare and Ngaere and revels in the different day-to-day duties of the office and looks forward to meeting many of you in the future.

Papawai Opens Doors on Waitangi Day Papawai Marae opened its doors on Waitangi Day, hosting more than one hundred whānau and guests from all over Wairarapa and points farther away including Manawatu, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay. The Marae Committee organised a day that began with a formal pōwhiri for guests, including whaikorero in Hikurangi. This was followed by a power-point history lesson presented by Malcolm Mulholland and a group discussion and question-and-answer session led by Diane Rewi.

Guests were then taken on a tour of the Marae, taking in significant aspects such as the whakapakoko, Tamahau Mahupuku’s memorial, stream restoration and sites of significance such as the location of Te Morere, Te Waipounamu and including Kuraha and the kaumātua flats.

The two-hour long tour ended with refreshments, tea and coffee in the wharekai and a general discussion about historical photographs which hang in the dining room.

The morning session started at 10.00am and more than seventy guests took part in the event.

The afternoon session started at 1.00pm with more than thirty guests attending. From the feedback received following the tours and comments received since the day, the event was a huge success and will be repeated in the near future.

This day was a trial run for future events which will be developed and fine-tuned based on the experiences gained on Waitangi Day. The Marae Committee wanted to offer an experience of a formal proceeding taking in the cultural aspects of pōwhiri and whaikorero rather than just an open day where people were left to simply wander around.

Waitangi Day Party for Masterton Waitangi Day was celebrated in a lowkey, family-friendly way at Henley Lake in Masterton.

Reggae music filtered around the park through a big sound system as several hundred people, mostly families and children, came and went.

Florance Manihera, originally from Masterton but now living in Sydney, viewed the day as a chance for people to get together.

“It’s very wonderful to be here,” she said. “It means a lot. It’s a gathering of many different people and a time to have a handshake, a hongi and to say ‘I love you’, which is important.”

Rangi McGregor, from Masterton, saw Waitangi Day as “the signing away of our identity” but also agreed it was a time for people to come together.

“It’s good to come down and see whānau,” he said.

“Each one’s different. Waitangi Day in Perth is twice the size. It gives all Māori in Australia a chance to come together when they’re away from home.”

There were lessons on poi-making, arts and crafts tents and, of course, a hangi for the hungry to get stuck into.

SCHOLARSHIP IN

LAW The directors of Johnston Lawrence Limited, Barristers and Solicitors, of Wellington, have established a Scholarship in Law for students from whānau associated with the Mangakino/ Pouakani land.

Johnston Lawrence has a long association with the Wairarapa Moana ki Pouakani Incorporation and previously the Mangakino Township Incorporation and Pouakani 2 Trust.

The Scholarship in Law was established in 1997. Holders of the Scholarship, both past and present, may be given priority in consideration for summer clerk positions in the Johnston Lawrence law offices.

1. The Scholarship will be known as the Johnston Lawrence Wairarapa Moana Scholarship in Law. 2. The value of the Scholarship is $1,000 per annum.

3. The Scholarship is generally awarded to a thirdyear student of law studying at Victoria University of Wellington. Both academic ability and financial need will be taken into account when awarding the Scholarship.

4. Applicants must be descended from an original Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa owner of the Mangakino/ Pouakani lands and certification must be obtained of that descent from the Wairarapa Moana Trust.

5. If, for any reason, the Scholarship is not awarded in any one year, the funding may be available for an additional award the following year.

6. Application forms are available from the office of the Dean of Law. Award of the Scholarship will be decided by a committee of three, being a nominee of the Dean of Law, a representative from Johnston Lawrence and a representative from the Wairarapa Moana ki Pouakani Incorporation Committee of Management.

7. Applications for the Scholarship close on 31 May each year.

Wairarapa Māori Seek To Settle After Sixteen Years Of Treaty Claim Preparations Māori linked to iwi of the Wairarapa and southern Hawke’s Bay have been attending hui around the country to endorse the finalisation of sixteen years of Waitangi Treaty claim preparation.

The Trustees of Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa – Tāmaki Nui ā Rua have held eleven hui seeking a formal mandate from the claimant communities to represent them in settling their historical Treaty claims.

The Tribunal’s report was overwhelmingly positive,” said Ian Perry.“Once our mandate has been confirmed by the hui, the Trustees will commence settlement negotiations.

Chair, Ian Perry, said “We have been progressing these claims for over sixteen years. It’s time to settle so that we boost our presence in the region for the benefit of the greater Wairarapa and southern Hawke’s Bay community”.

Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa – Tāmaki Nui ā Rua Trust represents nine hapū karanga, a sub-tribal collective, in the Wairarapa and southern Hawke’s Bay: Hinewaka, Papawai Marae, Wairarapa Moana, Hurunui o Rangi Marae, Tumapuhia a Rangi, Te Hika o Papauma o Wairarapa, Te Oreore Marae, Akura, and Tāmaki Nui ā Rua. In June 2010 the Waitangi Tribunal published its report on the Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa – Tāmaki Nui ā Rua claims.

“The Tribunal’s report was overwhelmingly positive,” said Ian Perry. “Once our mandate has been confirmed by the hui, the Trustees will commence settlement negotiations.”

The Crown has confirmed that the groups represented by the Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa – Tāmaki Nui ā Rua Trust form an appropriate large natural grouping for settlement negotiations in the Wairarapa and Dannevirke regions. Rangitāne groups, also in the Wairarapa region, are represented by a separate Trust.

It is anticipated that formal negotiations with the Crown will begin mid to late 2012 but it is a lengthy, complex process and it may be years before a final Deed of Settlement is signed.

Mandating Hui were held between 24 February and 11 March.

A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE Ngawaka Women’s Hockey Team – 1951/1952?

Ngawaka Hockey was formed by the Kaio and Halberg families.

They were based in Carterton and affiliated to the Wairarapa Women’s Hockey Association.

Ngawaka teams played both locally and in Māori Women’s Hockey tournaments in Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty.

Victorious in most games, a loss was a rarity but an experience enjoyed by the opposing team!

Ngawaka is a name with a proud history and the skill their many teams possessed was feared by all who drew against them.

Whether they had a full team of eleven or sometimes seven or less, they would still field a ‘team’, play their own skilful game and manya-time would come away with the win against teams fielding a full squad with reserves waiting on the sidelines!

Farm update

Although the summer has not been ideal for lying on the beach it has been great for farming in the Central Plateau!

As a result production is on target to be 10% ahead of budget, the silage pits are full to the point where we have had to bring in extra tyres and crops have also benefited from the regular rain. The maize has grown exceptionally well and a bumper harvest is expected.

The irrigation project has started with the first tower having gone up on Farm 6 and this pivot is planned to be finished construction by the 25th of February.

This pivot will irrigate 110 hectares of Farm 6.

Contouring has finished on Farm 14 and this will enable 86 hectares to be irrigated with the centre pivot on this farm.

This project will be the biggest Capex project since the forestry conversion at Ford in 2008 and will see 16 centre pivots irrigating 1000 hectares of the dairy units. The 16 centre pivots will in total span 7.5 kilometres and be fed by 22 kilometres of mainline pipe. From three pump stations, one from the Waiteti stream, one from the Mangakino stream at the end of Dillon and one at the mouth of the Mangakino.

Mangatainoka is not only known as the home of Tui Brewery but is now becoming a major tourist attraction for the greatest Super Rugby pre-season game in heartland country. The 8023 tickets to the Hurricanes and Crusaders game were sold out 25 days before kickoff.

People often joked that if you blink, you’d miss the place but Mangatainoka, the little settlement, is firmly ingrained in rugby folklore as the place to “see” a major franchise rugby game. And now everyone is saying, ‘If you blink, you’ll miss out on a ticket’.

The Crusaders took home the Great Big Tui cup made out of a 30-litre keg, which can hold enough fruit juice for the whole team. “Yeah Right” Built in 1897, the old Masterton Opera house in Lincoln Road is to be demolished. Since the Canterbury earthquakes, old heritage buildings around the country have been identified as earthquake risks and the cost to bring the old opera house up to scratch is not economically viable. The building has masonry structures that cannot be improved to current building standards and insuring these old buildings, even after they’ve been strengthened, is a major issue where in the end, the cost becomes too prohibitive.

At a proposed cost of $1.6 billion and covering an area of 30,000 hectares, the sight of 286 wind turbines standing at a height of 155 metres has put the wind up a lot of people opposed to what will become the largest wind farm in the world. The Genesis Castle Hill Wind Farm project has drawn opposition from Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, affected landowners in Pongaroa, Tiraumea, Alfredton, Bideford, Makuri, Tinui and the Rongomai Valley.

Mākirikiri Aggregated Trust which is made up of Wairarapa Māori landowners is opposed to the construction of the Meridian Energy Mt Munro Wind farm. Mākirikiri Trust is located below Mt Munro, northeast of Pukaha-Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre and midway between Eketahuna and Mauriceville north.

Mākirikiri Trust has set aside 80ha of pristine bush-clad land near Mt Munro and will add significant value to Pukaha as a national conservation reserve. If the wind farm goes ahead, 20 turbines at 130 metres high will tower above the bush line and as what happened on the Tararua wind farm, once they’re there, expansion with taller towers and larger turbines will be an eye-sore on the landscape.

As a shared service initiative, the three Wairarapa District Councils have put together a viewable, web-based information mapping application. The new website Mapping.gw.govt. nz/Wairarapa/ is loaded with information about the region’s properties, planning zones, flood-prone areas, streets, roads and geographic information from the Tararua Ranges right out to the eastern sea board and best of all, it’s free.

Kuranui College in South Wairarapa has developed an innovative groundbreaking programme aimed at getting students from primary through to college to learn and to appreciate what the great outdoors has to offer. The Kuranui Outdoor Education Academy (KOEA) will be based in the Tararua ranges at the Waiohine Valley Outdoor Centre. Experienced staff will deliver a variety of activities that will build confidence, self esteem and social well-being and with the Wairarapa coast less than an hour away students can learn and take part in other coastal activities.

It is expected that interactive learning will provide students with a real-life experience in a natural living environment.
