This year Kohunui Marae was selected for the Māori Television series Marae DIY. The resulting programme screened on Māori Television Wednesday 15 June 2011. Kohunui Marae gets its name from Kohunui Pā which is the papakainga consisting of several whānau whare that stood on the surrounding land during the 18th and through into the middle of the 19th century. The name probably refers to the dense fog which bears testimony to the large wetlands that once existed from below the Marae grounds to the Ruamahanga River some kilometres away and beyond to nearby Wairarapa Moana.
Kohunui Pā is home to Ngāti Kahungunu and Rangitāne rangatira Piripi Te Maari who led the resistance to the alienation of Wairarapa Moana repudiating the 1876 sale known as Te Hiko’s Deed which was signed by several of Piripi’s extended whānau. The Marae and Pā was the centre for carrying out customary seasonal food gathering at Wairarapa Moana during the tuna heke by Māori who came from all parts of the Wairarapa.
