“Te Heke Rangatira was originally a fishing canoe and was later used to transport people and goods across the nearby Lake Onoke. When we cast our eyes about this waka, we are therefore transported back in times to the early days of contact and with it the troubled history I have laid out today. As with all waka, however, they are not meant to be grounded in time; trapped in an undergrowth which restricts their passage forward. And so today, in this exhibition, we celebrate the passage of Te Heke Rangatira, and with it the thriving vitality of the people.”

A waka that once plied Lake Wairarapa carrying produce is pulling people to Aratoi to hear and learn of the lake’s past.

IN THIS ISSUE:

Two years in the planning, the two-tonne, 14.4m Te Heke Rangatira arrived at Aratoi, Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, in October to be the key feature of the exhibition.

Installing it involved the use of a crane and an opening cut into the south wall of the gallery to allow the waka to be moved in.

WAIRARAPA MOANA HE PATAKA KAI, HE PATAKA KŌRERO The haunting sound of the putatara could be heard above a crowd of several hundred people who braved cold winds in the Aratoi courtyard to attend the opening of the landmark Wairarapa Moana Exhibition on Saturday 6 November.

It signalled the start of a moving ceremony that began with a wero, with the Hon. Tariana Turia, the guest of honour.

Students from Makoura College, performed a rousing welcome as MP Turia, accompanied by Archdeacon Hariata Tahana, led the people into the gallery to circle the exhibition and its stunning centrepiece, the 14-metre waka taua, Te Heke Rangatira. Te Heke Rangatira was loaned by Te Papa especially for the exhibition.

In the Wesley Wing, Gavin McLachlan, Chair of Wairarapa Cultural Trust and Pani Himona, Chair of Wairarapa Moana Trust co-hosted speeches. Mr McLachlan told the audience that this exhibition is one of the most complex projects undertaken by Aratoi and shows what can be achieved by a small regional facility when it works closely with the community. It is also recognised as one of the largest and most ambitious exhibitions presented at Aratoi and explores the rich and sometimes turbulent history of the lake.

Fran Wilde, Chair of Greater Wellington Regional Council, described Lake Wairarapa as “our wetland treasure at the end of the valley” and outlined her hopes for the areas to be restored so they can nurture future generations both spiritually and economically”.

Arawhetu Peretini, Director of Wairarapa Moana Incorporation, said that although the lake’s history was contentious, the day was not about blame and was instead an opportunity for the people of Wairarapa to move forward together.

“The exhibition allows us to reveal some of our shared truths. This is the way we end up having a shared future. It is an opportunity for Rangitāne and Kahungunu to speak our truths”.

Haami Te Whaiti, Curator Māori for the exhibition, shared that hope. “We want every child in Wairarapa to know the story of the lake so we can return it to the state it once was, teeming with life and energy”.

The gathering then moved back into the main gallery where the exhibition was formally opened by the Hon. Tariana Turia, standing near the elaborate prow of Te Heke Rangatira.

Kawakawa leaves were then laid upon the waka and a group of our rangatahi performed a rousing haka. Archdeacon Tahana then concluded the ceremony with karakia and hymn.

About the 2011 Census

Tuesday, 8 March 2011 www.census.govt.nz What is the census?

The census is the oficial count of how many people and dwellings there are in New Zealand. It takes a snapshot of the people in New Zealand and the places where we live.

The census is held every ive years, and everyone who is in New Zealand on census day must ill in a census form.

The information you provide is protected by the Statistics Act 1975 and must be kept conidential by Statistics New Zealand. Census information can only be used for statistical purposes and must be reported in a way that cannot identify you.

The next census will be held on Tuesday, 8 March 2011.

Why is it important?

Information from the census helps determine how billions of dollars of government funding is spent in the community.

It is used to help make decisions about which services are needed and where they should be, such as hospitals, köhanga reo, schools, roads, public transport, and recreational facilities.

Information from the census is also used by councils, community groups, iwi, and businesses to plan for the future.

What do you have to do?

The census is on Tuesday, 8 March 2011.

You can do your forms online or use the paper forms delivered to your house.

Everyone in your home, including children, babies, and visitors, must ill in a blue Individual Form or have one illed in for them.

One person must ill in the brown Dwelling (household) Form.

Filling in census forms is required by law.

What happens at census time?

Statistics New Zealand’s collectors will deliver forms and Internet Access Codes to households between 19 February 2011 and 8 March 2011. An Internet Access Code will allow you to complete forms online.

Online and paper forms are available in either English or Mäori.

If all the forms for your household are illed in online, your collector may not need to come back. Collectors will pick up completed paper forms between 9 March 2011 and 20 March 2011.

How will you recognise your collector?

Your collector will wear a Statistics New Zealand identity card with their photograph and name on it.

They will carry a blue bag with the Statistics New Zealand logo. If you have any concerns about your collector, call the Helpline toll-free on 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787).

Who runs the census?

Statistics New Zealand is the government department responsible for running the census. It collects and supplies oficial facts and igures about New Zealand communities, businesses, and the economy.

New Chief Executive for the Federation of Māori Authorities Ron Mark’s huge grin, personal warmth and laidback manner belies the fact that this is a busy man, a man of action and a man of many parts.

Consider: He has recently been appointed Chief Executive of the Federation of Māori Authorities, Mayor of Carterton, has been the Deputy Chair of the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation since around 1999, a board member of the Wairarapa Moana Wetlands Group and Advisory trustee of the Makirikiri Māori Aggregated Land Trust. He is also involved with the Kahungunu ki Wairarapa-Tamaki Nui a Rua Trust which is advancing its Treaty of Waitangi claims, he freelances as a media commentator and also runs a consultancy business.

“I realised very quickly that as a Parliamentarian there were certain people who were often keen to talk to you and of course it was my job to listen carefully to them,” he says. “One particular organisation was FOMA which advocated strongly on behalf of its members, Māori Trusts and Incorporations, most of whom were heavily invested in the Parliamentary Production sector. In 2002 they came before the Select Committee, of which I was a member, and presented ideas for what they believed needed to be looked at in provincial and rural New Zealand.”

Ron admits that he `is a little bit busy’ but is thankful that his partner Chris is a strong support person who despite having her own career, provides practical and emotional backup in daily doses. Ron suggests that he is not too swamped by all the work involved. “There are 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week, plenty of time to deal with the issues that matter and then, of course, Chris and I look after our lifestyle block of seven acres on the outskirts of Carterton and a leased block of eight acres on Hughes Line,” he says. “Our friends have suggested that we have too much stock but our stock which consists of seven sheep, five R2 beefies, four cows in calf and a collection of chooks, are all in very good condition. Their good condition is due to the fact that we put a lot of time and effort into their welfare.”

Ron says he was impressed by their presentation in 2002 to the Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade Select Committee on the implications of New Zealand’s intention to ratify the Kyoto Protocol and the prospect of the establishment of an emissions trading scheme. “That presentation was made by Paul Morgan, the then CEO and Rodger Pikia who worked for Agricultural Research. After that we had the New Zealand Foresters Association come before the Select Committee to present their submission on the Kyoto Protocol and the implication for foresters”. He says he was impressed

by Rodger Pikia who represented the Māori point of view within the Federation and also the non-Māori view through the Foresters Association.

Discussing the Federation of Māori Authorities, or FOMA for short, Ron says his involvement goes back to his early days as a Member of Parliament for New Zealand First in 1996.

In 1999 Ron and Kingi Smiler were appointed by the Māori Land Court as directors who had been appointed by the Court to take over and run the Pouakani 2 Trust at Mangakino. This Trust owned around 12 dairy farms and a sheep and beef operation.

Wairarapa in brief “Then we were elected by the shareholders of the Mangakino Township Incorporation to head up that organisation as well. After some years we amalgamated the two entities and created the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation which produces this Mailer.”

October saw the launch of the Rob Guildford Memorial Trust in Napier. Wairarapa Moana descendant, Rob Guildford, the father of Hawke’s Bay All Black Zac Guildford, died of a heart attack shortly after watching his son score two tries as New Zealand beat England 44-28 in the final of last year’s Under-20 World Cup in Tokyo.

Ron explains that with the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation the best way for Māori to meet their socio-economic goals is by collaborating with each other and working collectively.

“As a family we decided we wanted to do something in Rob’s memory and the Trust was the best way to go,” said Zac’s uncle, Daren Guildford. “Basically the Trust will be aimed at supporting a Hawke’s Bay youngster from any code who under normal circumstances wouldn’t be able to afford to travel away to a national tournament. We want to support underprivileged Hawke’s Bay teenagers who show the potential and attitude to wear the silver fern in their chosen sport.”

“It was obvious to me at the conference that when I first looked at taking up the job I saw it was in trouble but that it had to survive,” he recalls. “In order to survive it had to be rebuilt and refocused and get back to the basics on which the Federation was founded in 1985 by the late Sir Hepi Te Heu Heu. “The recent conference was very much a watershed,” he adds. “We were either going to come out of that conference knowing that there was nothing left to do and that the entire enterprise could well fold, or as an alternative, we could look at it being relevant and that we had a role, a job to do and a mandate for our strategic plan, plus a green light to carry on.

At the end of the day that was what we got.”

Ron says they broke all records. There was a record attendance, record sponsorship and record attendance by the stakeholders. There was also an overwhelming vote of confidence. “The conference was held in Taitokerau at Waitangi, a considerable journey for some!” Ron adds.

Ron says they were able to secure the Prime Minister as a special guest speaker, which was a first for FOMA. “We also enjoyed an impressive line-up of both national and international speakers.

“The feedback from those foundation members present summed it all up when they said it was the best FOMA conference they had ever attended!

“What was most impressive was the unanimous vote of confidence in the Chair, that is, Traci Houpapa from Tainui and myself,” Ron emphasises.

“Members were very confident about the strategic direction into which we are leading the Federation and upbeat about the work we’ve done thus far.

There is clearly a lot more that we have to get done over the coming year, however, we have new members joining and old members returning and that’s a very good sign for FOMA and for Māori in general.”

Wairarapa Moana descendant, Warena ‘Woggy’ Pomana, of Masterton, finished an impressive third in Māori Television’s live Homai Te Pakipaki grand final in Auckland recently.

He finished behind Levin’s Eddie Biddle, and 19-year-old Roman Nicholas, of Tauranga, with Nicholas taking out the $10,000 first prize.

The National Māori Nutrition Conference was recently held at Martinborough’s Hau Ariki marae. It is the first time the event has been held in Wairarapa, and gives Māori nutritionists and health advocates the chance to meet and share ideas and strategies for promoting Māori health. Lynne Whata, one of the conference’s hosts and president of the local branch of the Māori Women’s Welfare League, said about 150 experts from around the country had attended the event. While the focus was on nutrition and exercise, the conference was also a great chance to show off the best of the area, she said.

The Papawai stream is a step closer to being clean and green once again, with a $25,000 grant helping to restore the waterway to its original state. The Papawai Community Trust received the grant from electricity operator Transpower to help clean and re-plant the stream. Papawai Community Trust Chairman, Peter Rewi, said the money would go towards removing willow from the waterway, channel clearing, weed control and fencing. Native plants and flaxes would then be planted helping to take the stream a step closer to its original state.

Wairarapa Moana descendant, Rose Tahuparae, was responsible for organising the official pōwhiri for US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, when she arrived in Wellington in November and she said it was an occasion she would never forget. Mrs Tahuparae is the official kaumātua of Parliament, a role she took over from her late husband Rangitihi (John) Tahuparae about two years ago.

2010 AGM Highlights

Wairarapa Moana Incorporation The beginning of a very memorable two days commenced with the karanga to the large assembly of Wairarapa Moana shareholders and their whānau onto Mokai Marae for the pōwhiri.

This was followed by a bus trip to visit the Miraka and Tuaropaki operations. A member from Tuaropaki Trust was assigned to each bus and the commentaries provided during the trip were most informative with snippets of typical Māori humour that embraced the occasion.

First stop, the construction of the Miraka plant. Richard Wyeth, General Manager for Miraka, and his team gave an enlightening presentation and responded to questions from shareholders and whānau. Next stop, the magnificent Tuaropaki glasshouses where trustee, Ngaire George, and her team educated everyone on the growth and production of capsicum and the operations of the glasshouses. Back in the buses and off past the worm farm towards the geothermal station. It was obvious that in years past the catalyst for these operations started with a vision together with those who were not afraid to take a chance that could lead to a changed future. With all of this new-found knowledge we headed back to Mokai for dinner.

On the Saturday morning, buses left Mangakino Area School to take part in the site visit of the farms. The three-yearly visit to our farms is always well attended when the AGMs are held in Mangakino and this year was no exception.

The Incorporation AGM commenced around 1.30pm with the election of two members to the Committee of Management. Candidates Jina Andrews, Mark Rutene and Kingi Smiler addressed the meeting prior to voting.

Congratulations to Mark Rutene and Kingi Smiler who were returned to the Committee of Management for a further term.

Congratulations were also extended to Jina Andrews for offering himself for election.

Te Horipo Karaitiana presented the financial accounts followed by a strategic update on the year’s activities. The proposed dividend of $400,000 to be paid from the Tax Free Reserve was discussed. A motion to increase the dividend to $500,000 tax free was put to the meeting and lost. The

original proposed dividend was approved. The distribution will be made to shareholders during the first week of December.

The matter relating to the Treaty of Waitangi Claim Wai 85 was presented and discussed. The two recommendations as detailed in the Notices of Meetings booklet were approved.

Matters received from the floor for General Business included: 1. A request was received to consider holding an AGM at Kohunui Marae. Consideration will be given to this and responded to at the 2011 AGM. 2. A request was received to consider increasing the education grant depending on the current financial position. The grant will remain at $40,000 per annum in light of financial commitments.

3. A request was received for funding to the value of $200,000 to complete the rebuild of Pouakani Marae. A review is to be undertaken in order to consider the request.

Next year’s Annual General Meetings will be held in Greytown on October 29, 2011.

The Committee of Management would like to thank all those involved with the preparation and support of the AGMs. To our shareholders and whānau who attended, your participation during the weekend is very much valued. A special thanks goes to Lois Shelton-Te Maari, Whitu Karauna and the Pouakani Marae team who ensured that all the required arrangements were dealt with at the Mangakino School. A big job well done and much appreciated. Also special thanks to Beryl, Joell and the whānau of Mokai for providing accommodation, meals and hospitality to our whānau on Friday and Saturday nights.

Wairarapa Moana Trust The Annual General Meeting of the Wairarapa Moana Trust was held at Mangakino Area School, Mangakino, on 29 October. Attendees heard about the Trust’s activities over the 2009-10 year.

Trust Chair, Pani Himona, reported that the Trust ended the year with a small deficit of $1,309.

However, the end-of-year balances show a healthy financial balance, assets of $269,169 exceeding liabilities of $10,172.

The Trust reported on its achievements over the past year which included: • Twenty-eight approved Future Leaders Scholarships; • Six Future Leaders Trade Training and Apprenticeship Scholarships; • The Wairarapa Moana Exhibition – History Of The Lake, opened on Saturday 6 November and will run to May 2011; • Continued sponsorship of the Golden Shears.

During April 2010, the Trust held its third successful Future Leaders Wānanga at Kohunui Marae where successful scholarship recipients and their whānau came together to learn what it means to come from Wairarapa Moana.

Lynnette Whata was delighted to introduce Dr Robert Joseph PhD, a past Wairarapa Moana Trust scholarship recipient, who gave a presentation on “My Academic Journey And How It Has Led Me To Where I Am Today”.

Diane Rewi reported on the review of The Objects of the Wairarapa Moana Trust Constitution, undertaken during the year by the trustees and presented the proposed alterations for adoption. The meeting resolved to adopt The Objects.

Trustees fielded questions about Trust activities, specifically in regard to the Trust’s Constitution, Object 2; Future Leaders Scholarship criteria; and Pouakani Marae rebuild.

This year saw Lynnette Whata and Tame Matiaha retire by rotation from the Trust. As there were no other nominations received, the appointment of Lynnette and Tame was confirmed by the meeting.

They will join Pani Himona, Diane Rewi and Henare Manaena and the co-opted member for the coming year.

My Journey – AARON COMPTON I’ve been asked to write about my journey and how the Wairarapa Moana Trust helped me to get to where I am today.

It wasn’t a simple road and I’ve deviated from the route I had planned to take and then deviated again from the amended plan but looking back I see that I wouldn’t have made it here any other way, the deviations are what made me useful to my current employer.

My father was Gary Compton and it was he who told me about the Wairarapa Moana Trust when I began my studies.

It was through his Mum, Millicent Tiramehameha Compton (nee Te Tau) that we were linked to the Trust.

I had decided in 2002 that it was time to give up working in hospitality and do some serious study. I had Plans A, B and C. Plan A was to become a rock star. Although I had once done pretty well at a Te Tau whānau karaoke night with my version of the B-52s ‘Rock Lobster’ I didn’t really have the self obsession and drive to go far with Plan A, no matter how appealing the lifestyle sounded.

Plan B was to fluke my way to the top of the film business with a mind-blowing movie that I would write, direct and act in. I started to go off Plan B once I had learned a bit more about how competitive the film industry is.

Plan C was to get a degree, any old degree that I found interesting, simply so that I could do a post graduate course in information science and become a librarian. Not too dissimilar from rock star and famous film director, surely? I feel that my aim was slightly off in Plan C. If I’m honest with myself I can see that I had been spending a lot of time at the Wellington Library when I first started thinking about being a librarian. Although I have a passion for information and knowledge I didn’t really want to be a librarian; I wanted to work at that particular library. So I think that, even though my aim was slightly off, Plan C ended up hitting a way better target.

I had been living in Western Australia for six years, for the last couple of those years in Fremantle. It was a good lifestyle for a young man and a lot of fun but I had been writing short stories, even having some published and I wanted to work more with my head than my hands. I started thinking that it would be fun to make my stories into films.

At about this time an Aussie mate asked me what I really wanted to do. Off the top of my head I said ‘participate in the Māori Renaissance’. I didn’t really know what this meant or how I could contribute, I just felt that there was a lot going on back home and I was missing out.

I also wanted to be closer to my family back in Aotearoa so in July 2003 I flew home. It turned out that hospitality was not such an easy habit to break. I got a job making coffee in a kiosk in Manners Mall in Wellington and I thought about my options. I could study film at Victoria University and get a flash university degree but the course was all theory. I’d be able to talk and write well about film but I wouldn’t come out with any practical film making skills. Or, I could relocate to sunny Invercargill and get a slightly less prestigious degree from the Southern Institute of Technology and gain some useful hands-on skills. This way I could benefit from the Zero Fees scheme and not have to pay for the course…it was a simple decision in the end. Studying isn’t cheap, even on the Zero Fees scheme, there are still text books and all the other expenses that start to add up when you don’t have full time work, plus relocating to Invercargill is a major investment in itself.

So my Dad told me to approach the Wairarapa Moana Trust.

I applied for a scholarship before my first year of study began.

To be honest, at that time my ideas about what I wanted to do with my upcoming education were kind of hazy and I was still clinging to Plan B, without having any idea what implementing that plan would take, or even how to present a scholarship application. My application was hand written in my spiderish scrawl and was kind of airy-fairy. It was no wonder I got turned down that year.

After a year of studying digital media I at last had a clue. I had spent some time behind computers and cameras, learning about shooting and editing digital films but also about more esoteric things like media culture and script writing, in fact it was script writing where most of my energy went. This time I typed and printed out a more coherent application, sent it away and was rapt to be rewarded for putting more effort in.

For the next two years I received funding from the Trust. My focus was still on the writing side of making films but I also had to learn the more technical stuff, the stuff I wasn’t so good at: lighting, sound, camera operating, plus all the preproduction planning. Making a film is really complicated and my ideas of doing everything myself were so wrong, in an artistic sense I had to go from my cosy solitude of fiction writing to the messy, collaborative world of film. It was a bit of a shock.

I was happiest writing scripts and my talent in this area was noticed, for the class project where we all had to work on one film it was my script that was chosen and when our tutor got his hands on some actual 35mm film and decided to make his own film, he asked me to write a script for him (on my CV this translates to: commissioned to write script for local producer).

I discovered another talent: composing and making production music for my films, using computers. This became

an obsession and I could lose hours tweaking a drumbeat. I soon found I had a big file full of music so I sent a demo disk to a TV production company and they use some of my music in ‘The Gravy’ an arts show on TVNZ 6. One step closer to being a rockstar.

Unfortunately, my Dad passed away before I could graduate.

This was a very hard time of course but it was made easier by the fact that Dad died quickly without too much pain and by the great way the family gathered together to support each other. I had heard about funerals that are a celebration of a life but this didn’t mean anything until Dad’s send off. I knew he was a great guy who was well liked but it wasn’t until over five hundred people turned up to say goodbye to him that I realised how many people he had touched.

Back in Invercargill I somehow managed to pull myself together enough to graduate. My partner Rachel, we met during our first year of study, was studying nursing and was, by now, pretty keen to leave Invercargill. The place had been good to us but I wanted to be closer to home and family.

I looked for film-related jobs in Wellington but my heart wasn’t really in it. I looked into doing that information science course but it was really expensive and I was broke.

My Mum had always said I should be a teacher but I hadn’t listened; then Rachel suggested I look into teaching. The more I thought about it the better an idea it became: I’d be doing something to help other people, the money is way better than I had been earning, plus I’d get all those holidays, during which time I could record more music and watch my first album climb the charts…dream on!

So, I went to Victoria University to do the Postgraduate Teaching Diploma, also known as the pressure cooker course. I was still eligible for some assistance from the Trust and they were kind enough to grant me the last year of the three-year scholarship. The wānanga at Te Ore Ore Marae was a good learning experience too, a great chance to meet other scholarship recipients and learn some of our whānau history.

LYN WILSON Graduation Student

There were times I didn’t think I’d make it through the pressure cooker course, there were plenty of people who didn’t. Just to make it that much more fun Rachel and I decided to buy a house and nature decided we should have a baby to go with the house. That was a tough year but we survived and now have a beautiful baby girl named Lily Tiramehameha Compton.

We had assumed that as a male teacher I’d have no trouble finding a job but it wasn’t so easy. I worked in various schools around the Hutt as a relief teacher and then spotted an ad for an education position at Te Papa.

After a full-on selection process where I had to not only attend a normal interview but also make a presentation on a museum exhibit of my choice, plus design a one-hour education programme and after a nervous week’s wait by the phone, I was offered a job.

I whakapapa to Ngati Kahungunu and Rangitāne through my grandfather, Te Aroha Hami (Sam) Reiri and to Ngāi Tahu through my Taua, Flora Mei Reiri (nee McKay) from Moeraki.

On the 24th March 2010, I graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Imaging Technology). WhiIe completing the clinical placement with Hawke’s Bay DHB, I was fortunate enough to live with Aunty Daphne and Uncle Ron Lambess of Havelock North, who kindly accepted me into their home for three years. The academic part of the degree was completed through daily travel to Palmerston North. I am currently working in the Imaging department at the Wairarapa DHB and doing locum work with Boulcott Private Hospital in Lower Hutt.

It is with much gratitude that I acknowledge the educational scholarship I received from the Wairarapa Moana Trust each year for the duration of the degree and the awesome support from my whānau.

I’m now one of five ‘Education Programme Developers’ on the education team. We have a wide range of programmes that we teach to visiting school groups who come in from all over the country.

I am also helping to put some digital resources online, based on exhibits at Te Papa, for use by teachers. My boss gave me this project because of my digital media degree, so although I no longer want to be in the film industry the skills I learned in that area prove useful. And, although I’m not a school teacher I got this job partly thanks to my teaching qualifications.

The first programme I had to learn was ‘Matariki.’ This year it was based on the theme of taonga puoro, traditional Māori musical instruments, so I had to learn a bit about these instruments (I never got very good at playing the kōauau but you never know, it could feature on my breakthrough hit song). We taught the kids how to make porotiti, little disks that spin on a string between your hands and make a whirring, throbbing noise, kind of like a very quiet pūrerehua or bull roarer. In the old days tohunga would play porotiti to help focus the minds of their students but since colonisation they had been thought to be just toys.

Since I made that comment years ago about wanting to be part of the Māori Renaissance I’ve sometimes felt embarrassed by it: what did I think I had to contribute. I wasn’t raised with tikanga Māori, who am I to think I can join in now?

Then, during one of these Matariki lessons it occurred to me: here I was, participating in the Māori Renaissance, helping to bring an almost lost instrument back to life in the hands of a new generation of Kiwi kids. Through this long journey I’ve managed to build up the skills and knowledge to be here, teaching all sorts of kids— Māori, Pakeha and from across the world, about Aotearoa and tikanga Māori and much more besides. It’s good work.

Another Graduand Wairarapa Moana Trust scholarship recipient Keryn Rowe recently graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Social Work degree.

Younger daughter of the late Hune (June) and Rose Te Maari, Keryn farmed for some years in South Wairarapa before spending a year working at the Wairarapa Moana Trust’s Queen Street office. She left to commence the four year degree course but along the way took on work in the social service field. She completed her degree last year and continues to work in Palmerston North.

Keryn says, “I want to thank the Trust for their scholarship which helped me make the transition from wage earner to student”. Keryn also credits her sister Lynnette (Te Maari – Whata) with support and encouragement along the way. Both sisters are now holders of BSW and both are engaged in social work.

Shareholder Bank Account Details Payment of dividends to shareholders resident in New Zealand is made by way of Direct Credit to shareholders bank accounts. Shareholders resident in New Zealand no longer receive cheques.

Shareholders residing overseas will continue to be paid by cheque unless the shareholder holds a bank account in New Zealand and elects to have the dividend paid into the New Zealand bank account. Bank account details are required to be verified by the bank. The office cannot accept bank account numbers over the phone, fax or email or written by letter.

Please be reminded that if you are required to provide new bank account details because you have changed your banking facility or your account has been closed, please call the office to request a Direct Credit account form.
