Kia ora koutou
I hope you enjoy this month’s edition of Chatter. As always, you’ll find a wonderful range of events and services happening across our district, and I’d like to highlight just a few of them.
On 4 March, local radio personality Steph, along with co–presenter Karen from Compass FM’s Women’s Wellbeing Hour, will be hosting an evening of conversation at the Rangiora RSA.
The Volunteer Expo is another fantastic opportunity to discover ways to support local organisations in the valuable work they do. This year’s Expo will take place at the Rangiora Library on Friday, 6 March.
Later in the month, Rangiora Promotions will be bringing the community together for Sunday Funday at the A&P Showgrounds. You’ll find more information about all of these events inside this edition.
While summer has been a little unpredictable, we’re lucky to have plenty of indoor spaces to enjoy. Be sure to check out the Chamber Gallery performances and the beautiful art spaces across our District Libraries.
Greetings from the Editor
We all know that funding is always a priority for community groups. Every edition of Chatter includes a funding section. This month features Creative Communities, Community Boards, and the Suicide Prevention Funding Scheme. The MainPower Community Fund is also currently open, closing 31 March. You can find full details on the Community Fund page on Mainpower’s website.
Last year, more than 1,100 young people shared their voices through a survey that helped shape the draft Youth Action Plan. This plan is now open for public consultation, and we would love to hear your thoughts.
Finally, last month we introduced our new team member Cherry. This month, you will get to know Aleisha, who is covering Family Violence and Alcohol harm prevention role while Alyssa is on parental leave. A warm welcome to Aleisha and Cherry, and a welcome back to Emily and Elizabeth.

Introducing Aleisha Black
aleisha.black@wmk.govt.nz
Hi! I am new to the Community Team, coming in as Community Development Facilitator for Family Violence Prevention and Alcohol and Drug Harm. I feel incredibly privileged to join the team at Waimakariri Council and to work with the wider community members who care for these important issues.
Community Development has become my life since I took the lead in forming Miscarriage Matters NZ in 2019. As chairperson of this charity, I love inspiring our team to keep working to make things better in this space. Everyone involved in Miscarriage Matters volunteers their time, myself included, so I understand the challenges that lie between seeing what needs to be done and having the time and resources to make it happen. I am looking forward to doing my best to bridge this gap in the portfolios of my new role at Council.
I have an educational background in psychology and communications, and a creative background in film, photography and writing.
I live in the beautiful Omihi valley in the Hurunui region with my husband and three young children.
Please feel free to contact me aleisha. black@wmk.govt.nz 0800 965 468 (Wednesday–Friday)
If you need miscarriage support, go to www.miscarriagematters.org.nz

Abbeyfield Waimakariri
Inc News Update:
Banner flying high
The Abbeyfield banner will fly at several events over the next few months aiming to raise awareness and funds for an Abbeyfield House to be built in Rangiora.
Volunteers will run a stall at the Swannanoa Country Fair on Sunday 1 March, and Rangiora Church Street Market on Saturday 7 March, a promotional stall at the Volunteer Expo in the Rangiora Library on Friday 6 March, and a garage sale at 227B King St, Rangiora, on Saturday 14 March between 8.30am and 1pm.
The Abbeyfield House planned for Kingsbury Ave., Rangiora, will provide private and shared spaces for single independent seniors, with an affordable rent including all meals, power and other overheads.
Annual satisfaction surveys conducted in all 16 of New Zealand’s Abbeyfield houses show that residents feel happier and healthier than they did prior to moving in.
“It’s that wellbeing and community connectiveness that keeps them from needing earlier care home living, so it’s a winning solution for the government, residential eldercare providers under occupancy pressure, and the residents themselves,” says Mrs Valda Reveley, chair of Abbeyfield Waimakariri Inc.
The charity’s Auction of Promises fundraiser is on track to be a popular event on Saturday 16 May, with promises of golf at Clearwater, a ride in a Lamborghini, holiday accommodation in Arrowtown and Lake Brunner, and tickets to an international burlesque show just some of the auction lots on offer.
Valda Reveley is the AWI committee chairperson. Phone 027 271 9961 or email valda.sam@xtra.co.nz

Help shape the future of Canterbury
The Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) is inviting the public to provide feedback on the draft Annual Plan | Mahere ā Tau from 27 February.
Environment Canterbury remains committed to its Long-Term Plan 2024–34, and the work proposed in the coming year aligns closely with that plan.
The regional council’s focus for 2026/27 is on keeping rates increases as low as possible while continuing to deliver across its three core services: Environmental Regulation and Protection, Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards, and Public Transport.
This is your opportunity to tell the Council what you think about its plans for the coming year.
To share your feedback, find out more at ecan.govt.nz/annualplan26.
Feedback closes 11.59pm on 31 March.
Woodend Garden Club: A Rose for Every Birthday
Roses have long symbolised love, memory and renewal, which may explain why many gardeners feel a natural pull towards certain varieties. But did you know there’s a rose to match every birth month — especially when viewed through the rhythm of the southern hemisphere garden?
January’s midsummer warmth suits Rosa virginiana, valued for its simple dark pink flowers and later red hips. February’s lingering romance is reflected in the frothy white rambler ‘Wedding Day’, a rose to admire now and plan to plant in winter.
As autumn arrives in March, the native Dog Rose (Rosa canina) supports birds and pollinators, while April’s cooler days call for fragrance, perfectly matched by the soft pink, richly scented ‘Silas Marner’
Late autumn May belongs to the hardy English shrub ‘The Mayflower’, ideal for winter planting. June’s winter dormancy suits Rosa glauca, grown as much for its blue-green foliage and bright hips as for its summer flowers.
July brings hope in the form of ‘Korresia’, a bright yellow, spicy-scented rose that stores energy through winter for a strong summer display. August’s lengthening days are echoed in ‘Alpine Sunset’, whose apricot-pink blooms reward early planting.
Spring abundance arrives in September with Rosa rugosa rubra, followed in October by the climbing rose ‘Summer Wine’, ideal for fences and arches. November’s striped Rosa Mundi reflects the season’s changing light, while December finishes the year with ‘Festive Jewel’, whose deep salmon-pink blooms bring early summer colour and scent.
Whether chosen for meaning or beauty, there’s a rose for every birthday — and every garden.
Join the Woodend Garden Club! If you love gardening and great company, why not come along to the Woodend Garden Club? We meet every 3rd Monday at 1.30pm in the Woodend Community Centre.
For more details, give Shirley a call on 027 275 3027.
We’d love to see you there! Happy gardening!

Rangiora vs Kaiapoi: a friendly challenge for a great cause
Last year, Rangiora businesses stepped up by displaying Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury mentoring leafletshelping recruit local volunteers and connect young people with caring adult mentors.
Now it’s Kaiapoi’s turn.
Local businesses are invited to join a light-hearted challenge by displaying a bright and cheery leaflet in their shop, café or office It’s a small action with a big ripple effect: every leaflet could help a young person find a mentor who shows up and makes a lasting difference.
Businesses that take part will receive a social media shout-out, showing their support for local kids and community connection.
CAB Awareness Week
Each year, CABs throughout Aotearoa New Zealand celebrate Awareness Week. We will mark it in 2026 from Monday, 9 March to Sunday, 15 March.
Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury is a community organisation helping people know and understand their rights and obligations, and how to use this information to get the best outcomes. At CAB we provide people with the confidence and support they need to take action. We invite you to get in touch with us if you need help with any matter, no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.
This year’s Awareness Week will take place from 9 – 14 March and the theme is ‘Tūturu te tangata, tūturu te tautoko – real people, real help’. We will be putting the spotlight on our service which is made up of real people helping people with their real everyday issues in communities across Aotearoa.
Giving and receiving is also the experience of our volunteers and staff in CABs around the motu. Volunteers share their skills and aroha, taking the time to listen and awhi our clients so they are empowered to know and act on their rights and to connect with groups and services in their communities.
In turn, our volunteers gain so much –learning new information, developing research and problem-solving skills and contributing to making communities more caring and inclusive.
If you’ve ever considered making a difference in your community, now's your chance. How about applying to volunteer with us at Citizens Advice Bureau? We’ll be holding interviews at the end of this month, so please contact us for an application form and role description. Applications close on Wednesday, 11 March. Training will begin in May.
Our opening hours are 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

Planning Ahead for Life’s Unexpected Costs
Being prepared is part of everyday life — but unexpected costs can still put pressure on the family budget. A car breakdown, urgent vet visit, or a household repair often arrives without warning.
Plan
for common emergencies
Reliable transport is essential. Setting aside money for vehicle maintenance and repairs can help avoid bigger costs later. The same applies to tools and equipment that households rely on.
TIP – Car Check Challenge: Set a “car maintenance day” each season. Avoiding one big repair can be worth a hundred cups of coffee!
Pets are part of the family
Vet bills can be expensive, especially in emergencies. Saving a small amount each week for animal care can reduce stress when the unexpected happens.
TIP – Pet Piggy Jar: Pets need care, and vet bills can surprise you. Save $2–$5 a week in a “pet piggy” jar for emergencies. Kids can help fill it — a fun way to learn about money and responsibility.
Start a small emergency fund
An emergency fund doesn’t have to be large. Even $10–$20 a week can quickly build a buffer for surprise expenses. Keep it in a separate account so it’s there when you need it.
TIP – The $5 Milk Trick: Every time you buy a coffee or takeaway, drop $5 into a jar instead. By year-end, you might have enough for a weekend away or unexpected bills!
Plan ahead for family costs
School trips, sports fees and seasonal expenses are predictable. Putting a little aside each week helps avoid last-minute pressure and the need to borrow.
Prepared, not perfect – Peace of mind matters
Planning for emergencies isn’t about having spare money lying around — it’s about reducing stress and protecting your family. A little preparation today can make tomorrow’s challenges much easier to handle by giving you options, confidence and greater financial resilience.
Support is available
Free, confidential financial mentoring services are available in the Waimakariri, including rural communities. A financial mentor can help you plan ahead and build financial confidence. With a simple plan, small savings habits, and regular check-ins, you can create greater security and peace of mind for yourself and your family. Please phone or email to talk about your situation. Our trained Financial Mentors are on hand to provide you with free, confidential support.
Our office is in the War Memorial Hall, 1 Albert Street, Rangiora.
New Affordable Rental Housing Available in Rangiora: A Community-Focused Answer to a Growing Need
As housing pressures continue to affect individuals and families across the country, Rangiora is quietly emerging as a place where affordability, dignity, and community still matter. A range of affordable housing options are currently available, that you may not already know about, with more coming soon, both located in central Rangiora. They have been designed for people who value security, independence, and a warm, modern place to call home.
One standout example of housing currently available, is the main house at The ARC, a modern shared living community created specifically for women aged 50 years and over who are seeking a safe, connected, and independent lifestyle, without the financial stress of buy-in costs common in many retirement villages. Located in the heart of Rangiora, The ARC offers a thoughtful and practical alternative to traditional retirement models.
The ARC is warm, welcoming, and purposedesigned for community living. Residents enjoy large, north-facing private bedrooms, each with a brand-new ensuite, within a fully furnished home. It’s a place that strikes a balance many people are looking for: social when you want it, private when you don’t.
Affordability sits at the heart of this model. Rentals are genuinely affordable, with no buy-in costs, making it accessible for women who wish to protect their financial independence. Its central location allows residents to walk to shops, cafés, pharmacies, and bus stops, reducing reliance on a car while remaining closely connected to everyday life.
Beyond the private rooms, The ARC offers shared spaces that encourage wellbeing and connection. A central courtyard, established gardens, and large raised garden beds provide opportunities to relax, socialise, or grow vegetables. Off-street parking is available, and the home comes fully equipped with all whiteware, kitchenware, and living and dining furniture, residents simply bring their own bedroom furniture. With limited spaces and strong demand, interest in The ARC highlights a broader need for housing that is not only affordable, but also thoughtfully designed and community-focused.
Adding to this positive picture are newly renovated rental units, currently being completed just a short walk from High Street in Rangiora. These units will be available from mid to late February to all genders and families alike. They are intended for people of good character who genuinely value affordable housing and who wish to be part of a respectful, wellmaintained living environment.
Together with The ARC, these units will be available from approximately the 10th of March, and are available to all adults, genders and families alike.
For those considering their next housing step, these housing initiatives offers more than just a roof over your head, they offer choice, connection, and the opportunity to live well without financial strain. Enquiries are encouraged, as availability is limited and demand is high.

We’re excited to share something a little different...
4 March 2026, Steph and Karen, the co-hosts of Women’s Wellbeing Hour on Compass FM, are hosting an uplifting evening created especially for women navigating midlife, perimenopause, menopause… and everything that comes with this chapter.
This isn’t a workshop. It’s not a seminar. Expect real conversation, shared experiences, laughter, warmth, and plenty of “oh wow, I thought it was just me” moments. The kind that happens when women in similar life stages come together, drop the mask, and just be real.
We’ll be talking openly about the realities of midlife, the changes, the challenges, the humour, the identity shifts, and the strength that so often goes unnoticed during this season of life.
A portion of ticket sales will be donated to Compass FM, a not-for-profit organisation supporting our local community.
Includes spot prizes, giveaways, and a digital take-home guide designed to support you beyond the night.
A genuinely good night out, especially if you’re in that “what is even happening to my body/life?” phase.

Mayors Taskforce for Jobs Employer Support
Support for local businesses to help young people to join the local workforce.
Do you have employment or apprenticeship opportunities for local young people? Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) can support you to train and upskill your new staff.
MTFJ is a collaboration between Waimakariri District Council and Ministry of Social Development.
MTFJ is focused on helping local businesses when they employ a young person under the age of 25, or those of any age who live with a disability or health condition or other needs and have had difficulty finding work. Each funding request is considered on a case-by-case
basis and tailored to fit the needs of the new hire and the business they will be joining.
