Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora koutou I am reflecting on the past week, where we have attended a funeral and a tangi.

Chris Greengrass and Dame Aroha Reriti Crofts, two of our much loved rangatira have finished their labours on this earth.

These mighty women leave a huge legacy of hard work and passion for those in need. More than that, they have modelled to us all, the virtues of humility, love and joy! We are so blessed to have known these two mighty women.

With the first solid snow on the distant mountains we can be sure that winter is here. Cantabrians are fortunate to have such clear crisp, calm winter days. Perfect for a good walk. As Billy Connelly says, ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!’

Winter also gives us a chance to slow down for a bit. It’s a good time for reflection or to learn something new.

For us it’s time to cement plans for the coming financial year. What are the needs, the gaps and the opportunities that will help us to build stronger communities? ’On Track’ is a capability building series of workshops for local community groups and organisations. We continue to get grateful feedback from attendees who have learned

and applied skills to help them to operate more effectively and efficiently. The June 17th workshop - Social Media, ‘Beyond the Basics’ is aimed at helping attendees to manage multiple social media platforms and grow knowledge and interest in their group or organisation. Wednesday, June 15, is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and a chance to say no to elder abuse. Violence Free North Canterbury, in collaboration with the Waimakariri Age-friendly Advisory Group are hosting an Elder Abuse Awareness Training Day for local service providers.

Community Information

Students learn food resilience skills while supporting the community Kaiapoi High School hospitality students, Satisfy Food Rescue and Food Secure North Canterbury (FSNC) have been working together to make use of surplus harvested produce that may otherwise have gone to waste.

FSNC approached Kaiapoi High School with an idea to use surplus to incorporate teaching students how to make preserves, which fit well as part of their Harvest Collaboration project. FSNC partner organisation, Kaiapoi based food rescue organisation Satisfy, often receives large donations of harvested produce and were excited at the chance to use donated feijoas and pears as a teaching opportunity.

Andrea Preston, a Hospitality Teacher at Kaiapoi High School said “When Krysten contacted me about the idea to turn this produce into a useful product and also help those in need in our community, it ticked all the right boxes. I talk to tamariki about being careful with all our resources, and how we all have to be flexible in our programme

when the need arises. Free fruit to process is an excellent example of using produce in season. The students were really empowered from this authentic learning experience”.

The tamariki loved the idea of processing the fruit for a worthy community organisation, such as Satisfy and Andrea found that only one student had ever helped to bottle fruit at home before and this was valuable knowledge to pass on to everyone for their kete. Kaiapoi High School has been supported by food donations from Satisfy for the past year, so it was great to give back. “This opportunity fits with our school’s core values, community & excellence. It also links to what tamariki were learning about during the term one of preparing fruit and vegetables” Andrea said.

Assistant Principal Kim van Vuuran and three of the hospitality students delivered the many jars of preserves to Satisfy, where they then heard about how Satisfy would distribute the processed fruit to their recipient organisations that include food banks and other community organisations supporting people in need.

Satisfy Distribution Coordinator, Michelle Campbell said “It was great to receive the preserves from the school and hear about these vital skills being passed on to the next generation. Here at Satisfy we often receive abundance of harvested fruit that may not have much shelf life. Having an opportunity such as this to have the local school do the mahi to process and then donate back to us has been amazing. Food banks and other community organisations we support can provide the preserves to people in need with a much longer shelf life.”

Waimakariri Christmas Dinner Late in 2021, a collection of local people from Oxford Community Trust, Hope Trust, Reflections Trust, Kaiapoi Community Support, Salvation Army and Waimakariri District Council got together to discuss bringing a Waimakariri Christmas Dinner to the people of our district on Christmas Day 2022.

We know that Christmas is a fun and cheery time for many people, but a growing portion of our communities across our district increasingly spend Christmas day alone, or no longer have the strength of community and family around them anymore.

We are yet to secure an appropriate venue for this event, and would appreciate offers of a venue to use with a commercial kitchen. If you are able to support us to do so, please contact Grant Harris grant.harris@salvationarmy.org.nz

6 Waimakariri - He Hoa Ahakoa Ōu Tau Waimakariri Age-friendly Plan 2019-2021 Waimakariri Age-friendly Update June will be a significant month for the local Age-friendly Advisory Group. A final report by the facilitator presented to the Community and Recreation Committee of Council on Tuesday 31 May 2022 includes a number of documents: • a progress report on the current action plan (ending April 2022) which covers eight key themes being Transport, Community Support & Health Services, Outdoor Spaces & Buildings, Respect & Social Inclusion, Housing, Communication & Information, Social Participation, Civic Participation & Employment • an updated Terms of Reference for the Advisory Group • a report with recommendations for ongoing support for the Age-friendly work and the Advisory Group.

Preceding the facilitator’s presentation is a deputation by the Age-friendly Advisory Group chair, supported by other group members. Members undertook a revision of their Terms of Reference and functions, plus have drafted an Age-friendly Community Plan reduced to just three of the priority themes.

They are seeking affirmation from Council of their ongoing value as an advisory group, a continued level of admin support from the Community Team and endorsement for their draft plan. Their intention is to check in with the older persons’ sector in case there are other priority areas, plus revisit

the groups and services regarding any changes to representation.

Advisory Group members are representatives from priority groups and key services for senior adults in the District, namely: Migrants & Newcomers; Citizens Advice Bureau NC; Presbyterian Support Upper South Island; Greypower N.C; University of the Third Age (U3A); Ministry of Social Development; IHC: Waimakariri Access Group. There are two independents, one of whom is the Chair Joanne Gumbrell. You may have read other updates from Joanne in The NC News or Chatter. The Council appointee is Councillor Wendy Doody.

Madeleine Burdon, the current Agefriendly Community Facilitator who began in the Community Team at Council in October 2006, finishes work on Thursday 30 June 2022.

Waimakariri Biodiversity Trust needs a Co-ordinator

ARE you passionate about our native biodiversity?

DO you enjoy talking about sustainable shrublands and wetlands management?

WOULD you enjoy the challenge of helping a new organisation become established?

About us Waimakariri Biodiversity Trust is an independent, registered charity formed in 2021.

We aim to help the community protect, restore, create and sustainably manage indigenous biodiversity throughout the Waimakariri District.

We are looking for a co-ordinator to kick off the process of building the relationships and resources to do this.

The role The position is a six-month, part-time contract with flexible hours to meet project requirements.

The co-ordinator will provide day-to-day support in working towards the Trust’s aims and help get our organisation off the ground by assisting with landowner engagement, event organisation, Trust promotion, administration, and fund-raising.

18 Van Assistants and Day Programme Volunteers

Presbyterian Support Rangiora is looking for volunteers Van Assistants: You would start at 8.30am and go out with the Van Driver and assist the driver with transporting the clients to the Day Programme. You would finish at 10am. In the afternoon you would leave with the Driver at 2.30pm and be back here at 4pm.

Day Programme: You would be in the Day Programme assisting the paid staff on the floor. We have either morning shifts 9am-12.30pm or an afternoon shift 12.30pm-3pm.

From Tuesday, 7 June our office will be operating on slightly reduced hours over the winter months. We will be open between 9.30am-3.30pm Monday to Friday until further notice.

Our recent campaign to recruit new volunteers was a great success and our latest cohort is undergoing several weeks of induction training. Towards the end of June, they will start working with their mentors in the office, putting theory into practice. We’re delighted to welcome them to our team.

To give you an idea of some of the questions we deal with on a daily basis, here are some examples.

A Bereaved by Suicide Group This grief education programme is for adults (18+) who have been affected by the suicide of someone they know.

The group is facilitated by professional counsellors and educators and runs on a term 4 weeknight (likely to be a Tuesday or Thursday night—TBC) over 8 weeks. The course is evidence based and really does help, whether your loss is from many years ago, or more recent.

Date: Mid Oct—Early Dec (Term 4) 2022.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Wednesday 15 June

What is Elder Abuse and Neglect?

• Sexual Abuse • Institutional Abuse • Neglect.

Elder Abuse is behaviour or lack of appropriate action, occurring within a relationship of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.

Several types of abuse can be present at the same time.

The older person and the abuser are generally people who know each other.

Statistics show that the majority of abusers are members of the older person’s family (partners, sons, daughters, in-laws, siblings or grandchildren). Other abusers include people employed in positions of trust residential facility staff or paid carers.

There are many different types of Elder Abuse. These include: • Physical Abuse • Psychological Abuse • Financial Abuse

What are the Warning Signs?

The following signs may indicate an older person is being abused: • Confusion • Withdrawal and/or edginess • Fear of a particular person • Recoiling from touch • Unexplained injuries • Drowsiness (due to over-medication) • Unexplained behaviour, sleeping or eating habits • Unusual withdrawals from bank accounts • Unpaid bills, lack of money for necessities.
