Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora koutou I am writing this on a gorgeous summers day at Woodend Beach Christian Camp, where Waimakariri Youth Council and WaiYouth are meeting to team-build, connect and begin planning for the coming year.

I have been really taken by the perception and critical and creative thinking that this group of young people have applied to planning. One particularly encouraging thing was that the thoughts and ideas of this group of young people link well with some of the key projects that are underway in our communities: community and youth Hubs, access to education and employment, intergenerational skills sharing, and mental health and wellbeing.

Hopefully, like me, you’ve had a good Kiwi break. I don’t know how many conversations I had over the Christmas/ New Year period about how blessed we are to live in Aotearoa NZ, with such easy and free access to recreation in the most stunning environments. It would be easy to forget that we’re in the middle of a global pandemic - but we are; and that

presents some significant challenges for the community and social sector. How to support our more vulnerable residents.

How to ensure that everyone can still access local supports and services if they are affected.

We’re very fortunate that in our District we have a well connected community.

Thanks (if that’s the right word) to a few national disasters and the odd pandemic over recent years, our health, social and community sectors are well used to working together and framing local solutions to issues. In the case of Covid, that means that we’re well prepared to provide any necessary top up welfare support to whanau and individuals needing to self-isolate.

With Omicron knocking on the door we’re feeling pretty geared up to respond, as needed, thanks to the amazing organisations that make the Waimakariri such a great District to live in. He rau ringa e oti ai. Many hands make light work.

What’s Happening in North Canterbury – January – March 2022 Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas and New Year break. Groups have resumed following Covid safety practices (includes sighting of vaccination passes) and we remain mindful of Ministry of Health daily updates.

Here is what we have in place for the next couple of months: Therapeutic Art group, Mondays 10am Grief and Loss Workshop, This weekly group is facilitated by Lynette.

6 ELDER CARE CANTERBURY NORTH CANTERBURY FORUM DATES FOR 2022 A warm invitation is extended to all those individuals, services, and agencies with an interest in the health and well-being of older people to attend on the following dates from 1.30-3.30pm: Wednesday 9 March, Wednesday 20 July, Wednesday 9 November.

These are held in the Wyllie Room at the John Knox Centre, Cnr High and King Streets (across from Caltex), Rangiora. (Please note this is a passport vaccine required site). Car parking is at rear of building.

We typically have a couple of speakers plus time for discussion, information sharing and networking. There is no charge and refreshments are provided.

7 Providing opportunities and direction for Youth to develop skills for life Trade Training Courses 2022 YDOT is currently looking for additional Tutors on a part time basis to assist with our popular Trade Training Courses. We would also be keen to speak with a suitable Trainer for our Gym fitness program.

YDOT currently run the following very successful courses: • Automotive • Carpentry and Woodworking • Welding and Fabricating courses These courses operate for small groups of young people in our well equipped workshop(s). Currently our courses run for a couple of hours, multiple days per week.

If you enjoy mentoring and working with Youth, have the necessary qualifications and have a desire to "pass on the baton" of knowledge and skills, please send us some initial information indicating your interest and previous experience.

Is your household ready if someone gets COVID-19?

Tē tōia, tē haumatia | Nothing can be achieved without a plan and a way of doing things It’s only a matter of time before a positive case of COVID-19 is in your community. The health care system will always be there for those who need help but most people who contract COVID-19 will not require hospitalisation and will be able to isolate safely at home. Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19 and their household needs to stay at home and avoid contact with others, including whānau.

Being ready is about people, conversations, connections and knowing what to do. Being ready will mean your whānau and community can help each other if needed.

Use the list below to have a kōrero and work out how ready you are to deal with COVID-19.

Identify people outside of your home who could help if your family is isolating, for example by dropping off food or supplies or for social support.

Services like The Student Volunteer Army might be able to help with drop offs and Work and Income may be able to help with costs.

Are there people in your household who might need additional care or support? Talk to any in-home carers you have to make sure you agree in advance about what will happen if you need to isolate. Make plans if you have shared custody of a child or dependent.

Talk to your school, work, community groups and networks to find out what their plan is - do they need anything from you? Will they be able to support you?

Work out how to let people know your household is isolating - this could be a sign for your front door or fence. Set up a spot outside your front door with sanitiser and a pen and paper or QR code for people to record their details if they are helping with contactless drop off.

If people are helping with contactless drop offs, do you want them to text or message before they arrive? Beep the car horn from the gate? Use an agreed entrance?

Write down any household instructions someone else could easily follow if you get sick. Cover things like feeding pets, paying bills and watering plants.

Think and talk about how you reduce the chances of COVID-19 spreading across your household. Can you reduce shared spaces, or increase cleaning?

Work out what you’ll need to help you and those around you

Make a list of whānau information - include everyone’s names, ages, national health index numbers (NHI), any medical conditions and medication they normally take or medical supplies each person will need. Include emergency contact information like your Doctor’s clinic, afterhours, and any support agencies.

Gather things you enjoy. What might help stop boredom if you’re isolating at home?

Have a house meeting so everyone (including younger ones) knows what to do, how to support each other and who to contact if someone gets sick or has to go to hospital.

Share your plan with wider whānau, neighbours and regular manuhiri/visitors and talk to them about what you’ll need them to do and how you can help each other.

4. Reach out to friends and whānau

Stay connected - arrange regular catch-ups with your whānau, friends and community. If you’re isolating make sure these are online or by phone.

Support your friends, whānau and workmates to make their own plans to get ready.

Find out what your community is doing - is there a group making meals to freeze, sharing planning tips or just staying in the know?

Note down what other medicines for family members you might need if isolating:

Fever Things to help soothe temperature, like ice packs, hot water bottles, warm clothes and pain relief like paracetamol.

Aches Things to help keep you comfortable – like pillows and blankets.

Staying mentally well It’s normal to feel anxious or stressed in times of difficulty. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. For support with anxiety, distress or mental wellbeing, you can call or text 1737 to talk with a trained counsellor for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Some ideas to look after wellbeing include: • Stay connected with friends and whānau • Acknowledge your feelings – it’s normal to feel anxious or stressed • Stick to routines where possible • Limit your time online

FIX A LAPTOP FOR YOU, YOUR WHĀNAU, YOUR COMMUNITY

RECYCLEADEVICE.NZ RECYCLE A DEVICE TEACHES VALUABLE TECH SKILLS TO REFURBISH LAPTOPS FOR COMMUNITIES TO KEEP

We are looking for 30 young people to learn how to refurbish laptops and participate in an ongoing refurbishment club.

These laptops will then be gifted to whānau and community members to keep.

The idea is to develop the digital skills of the community, to build a sustainable initiative which gives a career pathway into the higher waged opportunities available in the tech sector, while overcoming the challenge of access to a laptop - a tool which is required to be able to easily participate in the increasingly connected world.

Our aim is to have 30 young people refurbish 100 laptops in 2022, and grow the initiative in 2023.

Training will be a one day workshop, held in mid-March.

RAD is a flexible framework which can be modified to suit.

Volunteers are essential to our services for older people and we are currently seeking kind and caring people to volunteer in the following areas: Mini Bus Drivers to transport our lovely clients to the Totara Club and take them home again one day per fortnight. You just need a Class 1 D/L. Day Programme Volunteers for our Totara Club. Based here in Rangiora Monday to

Friday, morning and afternoon shifts available.

Come along and experience the social day out our club members are involved in.

We can offer good training and the fellowship of other volunteers, paid staff and clients. You will learn new skills, be challenged and be well received and appreciated by the clients.

Please note that our office and clinics are operating as usual under the red traffic light system, however if Omicron appears in our district we will suspend our face-to-face service and clinics and move to a phone and email service only.

At present, all face to face clients must sign in, sanitise their hands and wear a face mask to access our service. Our JPs require you to produce a Vaccine Pass, however none of our other services require a pass.

Our service is not-for-profit and delivered by trained volunteers. We will be advertising for new volunteers throughout February. Please get in touch if you’d like an application form.

19 EXPERIENCING DEBT REGRET? NEW DEBT- HELP CENTRE OPENS IN KAIAPOI Christians Against Poverty, a not-for-profit organisation which provides free debt-help and money management services across Aotearoa, has opened its first Debt Help Centre in Kaiapoi.

Kaiapoi Christians Against Poverty debt centre manager, Jenny Orchard, says she is excited “just thinking” about the number of people in Kaiapoi who will “have the chance to escape the stress of unmanageable debt and discover new financial freedom”.

“All this means you can pay off your debts and at the same time have more money in your budget for essentials. We provide free support for the entire time it takes for you to get debt free—because you are worth it.”

“My message to people and families is: if you have debt piling up and you feel like you’re struggling to hold it together, talk to the friendly team at Christians Against Poverty. Around 2025 people across Aotearoa just like you have gone completely debt-free with our help, and we want to hear from you next! We care, we are here, and our help is confidential and free.”

Orchard says once people are set up with a budget, clients have on average $69 more per week for food, which “can make a huge difference. I understand it can be daunting reaching out for help, but you are worth it. Thousands of people just like you have called and 99% report our service as friendly, professional and non-judgemental.

Aviva Tamariki RISE Programme One morning per week in North Canterbury*.

Offering 10-week in-person group, or 1:1 programmes** for children (aged 5-12) who have been impacted by family violence, and/or who have a protection order. WAIMAKARIRI REGIONAL EVENT FUND Enterprise North Canterbury is inviting organisers of major Waimakariri events to apply for the new Regional Events Fund.

The fund offers between $6,000 and $10,000 towards major events that will drive out of region visitation and measurable economic benefit to the Waimakariri District.

Rose Hellaby Bursaries Scholarship (Undergraduate) Available to full-time Māori undergraduate students studying to become qualified or employed in a profession or calling which includes scientific, mathematical or technical skills. The LifeKeepers programme aims to equip communities and whānau with the knowledge and skills needed to help prevent suicide.

Through this training you'll: learn how to talk responsibly about suicide gain an understanding of the risk factors that contribute to someone being suicidal learn what to look for when someone may be at risk of suicide develop strategies for how to ask about suicide, respond with confidence, and engage different services and supports LifeKeepers suicide prevention training is FREE, evidence based, clinically safe, culturally responsive, and available to New Zealand citizens and residents 18 and over*

Register now via the website: www.lifekeepers.nz *LifeKeepers is funded by the Ministry of Health to provide suicide prevention training for those New Zealanders who are most likely to interact with people at risk of suicide and who do not already have access to funded suicide prevention training.
