Autumn brings with it the promise of full harvests of pears, peaches, apples and late fruiting plums. A time of year when all bag and jars (with lids) you saved over summer become useful, as we give and recieve the harvests of our gardens, food forests and wild foraging spots with neighbours, colleagues and friends.

Food Secure North Canterbury celebrated this season with the launch of their Grow and Tell garden trails, featuring food producing gardens in Waimakariri and Hurunui. Sharing the knowledge and inspiration of home grown food production supports our communities to improve their ability to self provide.

We have been aware for some time about a portion of our older person population who are seeking opportunities to connect and be active in their community. The updated ‘Staying Socially Connected’ brochure provides connection opportunities by location for older adults in Waimakariri.

To pick up a copy of this, visit one of

our libraries or service centres. If your organisation would like copies of these, please contact Martin Pugh at the Waimakariri District Council.

As colder weather approaches and our heating bills increase, remember to heat your home safely. Have working smoke alarms installed, check electric blankets for frayed cords and remember the ‘1 metre from the heater’ rule. For more fire safety tips for heating your home, check out the Fire and Emergency website.

We have another full issue of Chatter magazine in the following pages for you to enjoy. Sit back, put your feet up and enjoy the news from community groups and projects in your neighbourhood.

Christchurch social enterprise overjoyed with support after Seven Sharp feature

A small Christchurch social enterprise is celebrating an incredible wave of support from across New Zealand after being featured on Seven Sharp.

Beauty & Bloom, a purpose–driven brand where a team of people with intellectual disabilities hand–make skincare and wellness products, received more than 300 orders in the days following the television segment.

Beauty & Bloom was created to provide meaningful work, confidence and purpose for its makers, with every product crafted with care by the team.

Return journeys to Christchurch from Rangiora/Kaiapoi cost $45 and can include a support person.

Transport is subject to availability and costs may vary if the trip is shared or pick up is outside of Rangiora/Kaiapoi.

To make a booking, please call the Citizens Advice Bureau on 03 313 8822, at least two week days prior to your appointment date.

Assistance may also be available from Cust (contact Mike 0274779573) and Oxford (Contact Oxford Community Trust 03 3123 006)

The sudden demand saw the team step up from their usual monthly production schedule to daily and weekend manufacturing to keep up with the response.

While the surge in orders has been exciting, the team says it has also highlighted the heart of their brand—embracing what they call being “perfectly imperfect.”

Beauty & Bloom products are handmade in Christchurch, meaning labels may not always be perfectly aligned and bottles are filled carefully by hand rather than machines. For the team behind the brand, these small imperfections are part of the authenticity and care that goes into every product.

“What has meant the most to us is the incredible support from our community,” the team said. “We feel surrounded by a village of people who believe in what we are doing and want to see our team succeed.”

The response following the television feature has reinforced the importance of inclusive employment and community support for social enterprises. The team says they hope even more people will discover Beauty & Bloom and be inspired by the story behind the products.

As the brand continues to grow, the team is now preparing new seasonal products, including a small Easter collection featuring their Honey Bunny fragrance in a body oil, room spray and lip balm.

Beauty & Bloom products are handmade in Christchurch and available online.

The Menz Shed is now on the move from our Sims Road Site to its new location in Courtenay Drive, part of the Kaiapoi Community Hub.

The move will take, optimistically, a few more months, maybe longer.

We have 4 new containers at the Courtenay Drive site which are being used to store our materials from the Sims Road site, they will eventually be relocated to their new position when planning consent and foundations are finalised, along with our new building and a relocated building from the old site.

During this transition period we are unable to take on any large projects on site, other than painting projects. However, if you have any jobs that need doing at your home or other premises, we are happy to help, if we can as always.

Winter Fuel Allowance and Smart Budgeting Tips for Our Community

As the winter months approach, many in our community begin to feel the financial strain associated with rising heating costs. Here at Budgeting Services North Canterbury, we want to ensure that you’re prepared to tackle these expenses smartly. This month, we are highlighting the New Zealand Winter Fuel Allowance, along with some valuable budgeting tips to help you stay on top of your finances during the chilly season.

The Winter Fuel Allowance is here to help ease some of that financial burden. This allowance is a government initiative designed to support seniors, low–income families and individuals receiving certain benefits, with their heating costs during the colder months. This year, the allowance starts rolling out in May and runs until September, so be sure your details are up to date with the Ministry of Social Development to ensure you receive your payment.

For households with multiple eligible members, remember that each qualifying person will receive their own allowance, which can collectively provide a significant boost to your winter budget. If you meet the criteria, it's paid automatically from 1 May to 1 October every year.

Winter Budgeting Tips

To make the most of your resources this winter, here are some helpful budgeting hints and tips:

1. Track Your Expenses

Start by keeping a record of your monthly expenses. This will help you identify areas where you can cut back. Use budgeting apps or simple spreadsheets to stay organised.

2.

Prioritise Heating

Costs

Heating can be one of the largest expenses during winter. Consider investing in energy–efficient appliances or insulation to reduce costs in the long run. For qualifying households, the Curtain Bank can assist you with free curtaining. Curtains are like insulation for your windows. The Curtain Bank collects quality, preloved curtains and upcycles them to support households in need of better warmth – https://www.cea. co.nz/curtains/ and https://sustaintrust.org. nz/blog/10–ways–to–keep–your–home–warm–this–winter

3. Seek Assistance

If you’re struggling to cover your heating costs, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Local charities and community organisations may offer assistance programs.

4. Plan Your Meals

Cooking at home can save money compared to dining out. Plan your meals for the week, focusing on hearty, warming dishes that can be made in bulk. Check out this informative website – https:// lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz/do–better–meal–planning/

5. Stay Active

Keeping warm doesn’t always have to mean cranking up the heat. Engage in physical activities at home to stay warm and consider layering your clothing to retain heat – https://www.activecanterbury.org. nz/being–active/getting–started/

This winter, let’s come together as a community to support one another.

Rangiora Museum

Have you visited our Museum at 29 Good Street? The volunteer staff are on a mission to identify people in their collection of historic local photos. The large collection of more than 10,000 photographs provide an invaluable record.

The next public meeting will be held on Thursday, 23rd Aoril, 7.30pm, and will feature well known Rangiora resident Jim Gerard, former Cabinet Minister, High Commissioner to Canada, Mayor and Community Board Chairman etc telling us about "A Walk Through Life."

Call in on Wednesdays and Sundays, 1.30pm to 4pm, and view a vast collection of ceramic owls from Maureen Day in the Hawkins Room and for Anzac Day some of our early army uniforms as well as a full World War 11 uniform belonging to Colin Rowlands will be on display.

The Winter Fuel Allowance is a valuable resource, and with a few budgeting strategies, we can all navigate the colder months more comfortably.

If you have any questions or need assistance with budgeting, feel free to reach out to our Budgeting Services team. We’re here to help you thrive this winter! Stay warm and take care of each other!

Services

We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need. Our service is not–for–profit and delivered by trained volunteers. We’re available face–to–face, by phone and by email. There’s no time limit on how long you can spend with one of our volunteers and all our services are free and confidential.

Our Clinics

We hold free clinics that cover advice for beneficiaries, budgeting, employment, immigration, and two types of legal assistance. In addition, we have volunteers who are also Justices of the Peace, and they offer that service when they’re on duty. Please get in touch for dates and more information about the clinics and JPs.

Extra support even if you’ve

al-

ready done some research

Even if you’ve already done some research, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you. It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action, whether that’s what to say when you visit a retailer about a faulty product, how to approach your gas/phone/power provider about a query on your bill, or how to talk to your employer about a workplace issue. Perhaps you have an issue with the dynamics of family relationships or noisy neighbours.

General Support

If you or someone you know needs information, advice or support on any matter, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to help. We’ll even provide a listening ear if that’s what you need. All our services are free and confidential.

Your Community Board can support your project with grant funding.

Application forms and grant criteria are available online or from any Council Service Centre. For more information about funding visit the Council website.

Are you on the Board or the Committee of a local community group?

Community Law Canterbury is providing a range of education workshops that you might find helpful.

On the Committee of a club or incorporated society?

If you are on the Committee of a club or incorporated society and you'd like to find out more about what you now need to do differently now that you group has re–registered, our workshop for re–registered groups is the one to come along to. This workshop will explain the new laws that apply to your group when you are paying Committee members, keeping records, holding meetings and more. This workshop will be held on the evening of Monday 20 April, and repeated on the evening of Monday 11 May and Monday 12 October.

Running a charity?

A change to the Charities Act means that there are some new rules that apply to all charities.

This workshop will look at those, with a focus on the 'governance review' all charities will need to have done by the time they file their next Annual Return with Charities Services. We’ll also provide you with a checklist that you can use to identify any changes that might need to be made to your deed, and to help you decide if you need to get further advice from a lawyer. This workshop will be held at lunchtime on Tuesday 05 May.

New to being a trustee?

Serving on a charitable trust is a great way to shape the future of the cause you care about.

Our workshop for new Trustees is designed to provide a short, simple guide to the things you need to do when you are on a Board. We'll also do our best to answer any question you have. This workshop will be on the evening of Monday 22 June.
