Electrostatic technology is used in many varied industries including automotive, furniture and steel manufacturing, as well as general on-site commercial usage for metal hand rails, steel doors, pipes and vents, etc.

The major attractions of this technology are the incredible labour and paint savings achieved. When coupled with the ease of operation and consistent film builds able to be achieved, this system is well worth considering.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

An electrostatic field is generated between the electrode in the gun head and the grounded work object. The paint particles are charged and attracted by the grounded object. This effect increases the efficiency significantly compared to non-electrostatic systems. The “wrap-around” effect allows the operator to paint items such as pipes or hand rails without changing position.

MULTI-SWIRL SYSTEM Wagner has developed a unique multi-swirl system. As paint passes through the nozzle it starts a swirling motion. This produces a soft spray pattern with an increased “wrap-around” effect.

Airless Spray Tips

Understanding Spray Tips

Airless spray tips are a key component to the successful operation of an airless spray system. They define the spray pattern, control the flow of the coating being sprayed & ultimately tell the pump how hard it must work. A proper understanding of airless tips is critical to the success of any airless application.

It is important to remember that the orifice size, in conjunction with the fan-width size, determines the spray characteristics of the tip.

When beginning a project, choosing the right tip size & fan width will determine how profitable you will be through both coating consumption & production time. If the tip size being used is wrong — by either choice or through wear — mil thicknesses will be too heavy & the finish will be unprofessional. As wear occurs, the pattern size decreases & the orifice size increases. You will find that you have to make more passes to cover the same area. There is no standard rate of tip wear due to the variation of the abrasiveness of all coatings. Replace your tips after 378 litres; it’s one of the most profitable things you can do.

Compressed Air Treatment

Moisture and oil in the compressed air used for blasting can cause many problems. Wet compressed air will cause clogging of the abrasive in the blasting pot and result in the pot having to be cleaned out. When using steel abrasives this is a major problem as the steel grit particles can rust together and form a solid block of steel.

Wet air also leads to contamination of the freshly blasted work surface. The moist air will create flash rusting in a very short time and lead to rejected surface preparation.

The Ball Stop Pneumatic Control Handle is designed as a basic deadman device which allows the operator to operate the blast without the need to hold down a lever or handle.

This means the Ball Stop handle can lead to reduced operator fatigue.

Increased visibility increases productivity. These rugged 12V DC blast lights are made from lightweight cast aluminium and fitted with a replaceable glass. Particularly effective when blasting in enclosed areas.

The perfect solution for blasting in areas with poor visibility, such as inside and under ship blocks and inside tanks. Powered by a 12VDC LED lamp this cost effective solution will make a huge difference in productivity.

Instead of guessing where they should blast, and consequently blasting areas already blasted, the operators will blast only in the correct areas; saving time, abrasive consumption and energy.

The Mini Sand Valve is designed for use on smaller sized blast pots and is fitted with 0.5” threaded ports.

Internal plate and stem are manufactured from stainless steel to increase valve life. Precise metering of all abrasive types is achieved with this valve to reduce abrasive wastage.

Abrasive metering valve suitable for all abrasive types. Screw in metering knob allows very precise abrasive metering and reduces abrasive consumption. Low profile height permits fitting to almost any blast pot. 1 1/2” X 1 1/4” pipe nipple.

The TVII is a normally closed, self sealing, abrasive metering valve with instant, smooth response to either pneumatic or electric deadman controls.

This fail-safe valve shuts off abrasive flow to the nozzle and seals the tank at the same instant. A remote abrasive cutoff is available, allowing the operator to stop the flow of air. The clean-out feature provides a quick and easy to clear the blast hose and blasting area of abrasive.

The Isolator Valve is a great maintenance time saving device. Fitted above the abrasive metering valve it permits the metering valve to be removed from the blast pot for service, without the need to empty the abrasive from the pot, which saves a huge amount of time.

The isolator valve is particularly useful for bulk blasters and multiple outlet blast pots as it allows each individual abrasive metering valve to be removed from the pot without affecting the other outlets. Fitted with 1.5” ports to ensure unrestricted abrasive flow.

The B2 cabinets are made for larger restorations and factory workshops with an option of open or closed-loop filtration. Units are manually operated with no automatic selection.

With the dual air pressure gauges, monitor the main incoming air pressure and regulate the pressure on the blast gun with the precise pilot regulator.

The BCON is the allrounder of machines capable of taking on small and large blasting jobs. Comes closed loop with automatic cleaning for extended run times.

Cabinet operations are controlled via colour touch-screen on BCON & CLASSIC models. Integrated PLC works directly with the touch screen for easy operation.

A 3-stage water closed loop system removes waste from water. Clean and filtered water is reused for the window washer and wash-down gun to eliminate wastage.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Disposable Masks

While the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets personal protective equipment (PPE) standards for dry abrasive blasting, there is no broad industry standard covering wet or vapour abrasive blasting. Given this gap, many working on wet or vapour abrasive blasting sites don’t completely understand the proper PPE that should be used in these situations.

When dry blasting first became popular, many operators employed just a face shield to keep the dust out of their eyes. With the amount of dust in the air, however, it quickly became clear that respiratory issues could become a concern, and standards were set to require respirators when dry blasting.

Compared to dry blasting, wet and vapour abrasive blasting reduces dust significantly, causing people to question whether or not a respirator is required. However, any blasting operation will create some dust, whether from the substrate being blasted or the media used for the blasting. Even if a small amount of media is being used, there could be kickback from the surface.

Less dust still requires protective gear, particularly if the dust might contain hazardous materials like asbestos or lead

The SR510 can be used with Sundström half and full face masks.

The Sundstrom SR510 is a high performance particle filter class P3. The filter flange features an O-ring that optimises the seal to the front rim of Sundström gas filters.
