Men and machines maneuvered through mountains of dirt as they worked on the road construction project on U.S. Highway 71.

It was a day like any other: a mundane, punchthe-clock day for some, a life-changing day for others. We tell the story of this day, Monday, Sept. 21, through photos only. This is 24 Hours.

When the railroad crossing arms got stuck in the down position on Jefferson Street, Wadena police officers showed up to direct traffic through the intersection. Responding were Bryan Savaloja (left) and Milo Scott.

The sun jumps above the horizon, only to be covered by clouds just above.

Orton’s BP employee Monique Holmes of Wadena works the graveyard shift. Holmes said she’s been working for the convenience store since June and keeps busy through the night hours with cleaning and other tasks.

A semi carrying a wide load had a little difficulty making the corner at the junction of U.S. Highways 10 and 71, causing a brief traffic jam.
