Celebrating 175 Years

Some of the most meaningful memories we hold dear are about the many clients we have come to know and consider to be part of the Waddington’s family.

The collections that our auctions were based on, the collections that have been built from our auctions, and those that return full circle to be entrusted to us once again. The relationships passed down through families and friends. We remember and celebrate you.

As 2025 marks our 175th anniversary, we are so very delighted to share another season of major auctions.

Thank you for the memories.

Our major Fall 2025 auction of Inuit Art presents a carefully curated selection of significant artworks which span early to contemporary periods of sculpture and graphics. The works included exemplify the energy and sophistication of artists' engagement with their respective genres.

One of the great themes of this season is the power of collectors, whose singular visions are a joy to behold when viewed as a whole. It is they who serve as the custodians to great masterworks across decades, ensuring that future generations will enjoy these artworks as much now as when they were first acquired.

We would like to spotlight three such collections in this auction. First, the S. Family collection, which was built over nearly seven decades by a husband and wife. A pioneering and important collection, it is distinguished by its remarkable diversity and uniformly high quality. The couple took great pleasure in watching the artists and their output evolve over the course of their collecting journey. Some works were bought directly from artists, others from important dealers. Through their immersion in the Inuit art community, the couple built relationships with — and collected important works by — many of the most significant Inuit artists including Davie Atchealak, Judas Ullulaq, Ooviloo Tunillie, Parr, John Tiktak, Joe Talirunili, Kiugak Ashoona, Charlie Ugyuk, Nuna Parr, Aqjangajuk Shaa, and Mathew Aqigaaq.

The second notable collection comes from Ken Mantel. The London-born Mantel started his career as a petroleum geologist in 1975. His work took him to Arctic Canada in the 1970s where he became fascinated by Inuit Art, and began to collect seriously. On returning to Britain in 1981, Mantel opened the Narwhal Inuit Art Gallery, alongside his wife, Tija. Mantel was regarded as the British authority on the subject of Inuit art and the gallery was the only one of its kind in the country. Mantel’s knowledge and passion culminated in ‘Tuvaq’, the first British-led book on the subject. After his death in 2024, Tija and her children are repatriating this collection to continue Mantel’s legacy.

The third collection belongs to David Sutherland. A former Northwest Territories Arts and Crafts Development Officer and an artist in his own right, Sutherland developed a lifelong passion for Inuit Art, and was an outspoken advocate and author on all matters Inuit. Sutherland and his wife Aiko were popular residents in the various locations in which they were posted, including Inuvik, Churchill, and Yellowknife. Sutherland declined promotions to stay in the Arctic, where he continued to develop artists’ facilities into environments of creativity and self-discipline. His work brought him into intimate contact with important artists who he continued to champion after his retirement, including Marion Tuu'luq, Janet Kigusiuq, John Pangnark, Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok, John Kavik, Andy Miki, Luke Iksiktaaryuk, Mathew Aqigaaq and countless others. An avid collector, Sutherland also purchased works, primarily from the Miqsuvik Sewing Shop, and other craft stores in the communities in which he served.

The S. Family Collection

For nearly seven decades, a husband and wife built a shared world through Inuit art — a love story told through stone, ivory, and paper. The S. Family Collection stands as the culmination of their lifelong passion.

A pioneering and important collection of Inuit art, the S. Family Collection is distinguished by its remarkable diversity and uniformly high quality. Mrs. S. spoke with us about the collection solo, her husband having passed away two years prior. Married at 19, they began collecting across a wide range of categories before focusing on Inuit art. Over the years, they organized exhibitions, specializing in sculpture. In their private collection, the couple did not restrict themselves to one region, medium, or artist. Their collecting philosophy was “to purchase things that we fell in love with, that we got excited about.”

The couple took great pleasure in watching the artists and their output evolve over the course of their collecting journey. As Mrs. S. explains, “we saw the development of the art form unfold in front of us—from the simplicity of the early sculptures to the intricate, detailed works created years later that told complex stories and legends. It was remarkable to witness the arc of that evolution.”

Their tastes were deeply in sync, and the couple always agreed on a purchase. Some works were bought directly from artists, others from important dealers. Art collecting was a major point of connection in their marriage, as was a great love of the outdoors. Canoeing and hiking were central to their lives, and to those of their four children. Mr. S took several trips to the North, hiking across the Arctic Circle with two of their children, as well as visiting Auyuittuq National Park, Ivvavik National Park, Kluane National Park, Katmai National Park and Ellesmere Island. Mrs. S. recalls that to prepare for the arduous trips, her husband would strap a flat of Coca-Cola cans to his back and walk around their Toronto neighbourhood to build up strength. He would also prepare his own freeze-dried food, a cache which took a year to prepare.

Through their immersion in the Inuit art community, the couple built relationships with — and collected important works by — many of the 20th century’s most significant Inuit artists including Davie Atchealak, Judas Ullulaq, Ooviloo Tunillie, Parr, John Tiktak, Joe Talirunili, Kiugak Ashoona, Charlie Ugyuk, Nuna Parr, Aqjangajuk Shaa, and Mathew Aqigaaq. Mrs. S. expresses a deep satisfaction with their lifetime of collecting. “We were lucky that we could do it and enjoyed it so much. I get emotional parting with these pieces, but it’s time for others to appreciate them.”

The Ken Mantel Collection

Ken Mantel was born in 1950 in London, England and started his career as a petroleum geologist in 1975.

His work took him to Arctic Canada in the 1970s where he became fascinated by, and started to collect Inuit Art, in common with so many of the earlier collectors who travelled to the north. In Ken’s case, the link from science to art was undoubtedly the raw medium and its evolution into dramatic sculpture.

On returning to Britain in 1981 Ken opened the Narwhal Inuit Art Gallery, alongside his wife, Tija. As collectors turned slowly to gallery owners instead of their annual trips to Toronto, to buy from the major co-ops and auction houses, in 1999 the Mantels also established NIAEF (Narwhal Inuit Art Education Foundation) as a registered charity to help raise awareness of the Inuit through their art.

Ken Mantel was regarded as the British authority on the subject of Inuit art and the gallery stood in a unique position as the only one of its kind in the country. Following his early papers, newspaper articles, art publications, public talks and discussions, etc, Ken’s knowledge and passion for the artform culminated in ‘Tuvaq’, the first British-led book on the subject.

It is with great fondness that Tija and her children, Sasha, Tanja and Misha now repatriate this collection to continue Ken’s legacy, as another chapter in the history of Inuit Art in Britain.

- Tija, Sasha, Tanja and Misha Mantel

“It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have known and met many of the characters who have helped to shape the history of Inuit art, mostly in Canada but also in the USA, Europe and of course my homeland Britain.”

- Ken Mantel, 1950-2024
