DOMINUS ESTATE 2013
Napa Valley
u. 2 x vts.
The 2013 Dominus is, to my way of thinking, one of the most profound wines Christian Moueix has yet made in his rather brilliant winemaking history, both in France and in Napa Valley. This wine, with very low yields of only 3,500 cases and a final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, offers up notes of cedar wood, forest floor, loamy soil and oodles of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. Very opaque purple in color, super-pure and intense, this wine has low acidity, but ripe, noticeable tannins. This is a 30- to 40-year wine and a profound effort from this famous vineyard in Yountville. Drink it over the next 40+ years. October 2015. 30th Vintage Edition. WS 100 WA 100 VM 100

Sonoma County u. bn. marked label.
2018 La Muse was matured 16 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose delivers a powerful perfume of cherry pie, blackberry preserves and baked plums, followed by suggestions of red roses, cast-iron pan, underbrush and unsmoked cigars, plus wafts of licorice and oolong tea. Medium to full-bodied, the black fruit and exotic spice layers flow so gracefully over the palate, textured by plush tannins and lifted with seamless freshness, finishing epically long and achingly fragrant. The intensity and complexity of aromas and flavors—all waltzing in captivating harmony— cannot fail to make your head spin in the best possible way. Electrifying! July 2021 Drink to 2055 WA 100

Pomerol
u. 2 x bn.
Composed of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Trotanoy reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color and comes prancing out of the glass with the most striking black fruit preserves, plum pudding, red currant jelly and blueberry compote notions, followed up by nuances of rose petals, chocolate box, licorice and menthol plus a waft of wild mushrooms. Full-bodied, rich and decadent, it fills the palate with generous perfumed black and blue fruit layers with a seductive frame of velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and very minerally. Pomerol
u. 2 x bn.
Composed of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Trotanoy is characteristically a little closed at this youthful stage, slowly unfurling to reveal compelling notions of chocolate-covered cherries, black raspberries and mulberries with touches of pencil lead, crushed rocks, underbrush and chargrill plus a fragrant waft of star anise. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and invigorating freshness supporting the densely packed, muscular fruits, finishing very long and mineral laced. Only 1,450 cases made. November 2018 Drink: 2022-2055 WA 99 JS 98

Pomerol
u. 2 x bn. 2 x marked labels.
The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is a blend of 80% Merlot,, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, cropped between September 17 and October 2 at 42 hectoliters per hectare. The IPT is healthy 83 and the pH is 3.72, the alcohol 14.6%. Enough statistics. What you need to know is that it is a beguiling Pomerol that will set hearts aflutter. It is bridled with a heavenly bouquet with intense red and black fruit, black truffle and a touch of smoke, opening wonderfully in the glass; the Cabernet Franc is very expressive and imparting a licorice note after ten minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with intensity, with a killer line of acidity that imparts freshness from the very start. April 2016 Drink to 2060 WA (98-100) JS 100

CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 2016

Full-bodied, profound and absolutely edifying on the palate, the densely packed, beautifully perfumed red and blue fruit layers possess a charge like defibrillators stimulating your heart to beat faster, each delivering achingly subtle floral and spice sparks, perfectly framed by very firm, very grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with incredible length and taking you to depths that extend to a provocative ferrous undercurrent. Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. bn. wrinkled & marked label.
Medium garnet colored, the 2014 Château
Cheval Blanc is still looking very youthful and wearing a bit of puppy fat, sporting gregarious red and black cherries notes with hints of oolong tea, wilted roses and dusty soil. Medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the lively fruit, it finishes on a lingering perfumed note. August 2018 Drink to 2042 WA 95

Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. bn. marked label.
Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is incredibly youthful yet not so shy as some other 2016s at this stage, giving wonderfully intense scents of red currants, black cherries, wild blueberries and violets with nuances of star anise, cinnamon stick, rose hip tea, cigar box and wood smoke plus a touch of beef drippings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has jaw-dropping elegance and depth, offering up layer upon layer of fragrant red and black fruits plus an extraordinary array of mineral sparks, supported by a rock-solid grainy texture, finishing with epic persistence and an edifying perfume. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Pavie is still sporting a bit of its oak to begin, giving way to a glorious nose of crushed black cherries, blackberries and mulberries plus hints of dried roses, stewed tea, unsmoked cigars and garrigue. The rich, concentrated, full-bodied palate delivers an incredible structure of very firm, very ripe tannins and a racy line of freshness cutting through the dense layers of perfumed black fruits and savory notions, finishing with epic length. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, it has a solid foundation of firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness interknit with the black fruit preserves and minerally layers, finishing very long and very decadent. Opaque purple-black colored, notes of plum pudding, blueberry pie and dark chocolate-covered cherries charge out of the gate, followed closely by hints of eucalyptus, star anise, unsmoked cigars and fertile loam with a hint of cedar chest. The full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, offering very firm yet wonderfully ripe, velvety tannins and seamless freshness to support the densely laden, muscular black and blue fruits, finishing very long and with loads of mineral-laced layers. COMTESSE DE LALANDE 2016

One of the greatest wines that this estate has produced in the modern era, the 2016 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a brilliant classic that no Bordeaux lover is going to want to do without. Mingling aromas of cassis and plums with notions of licorice, sweet tobacco leaf, rich soil tones, licorice, cigar smoke and violets, it’s full-bodied, seamless and complete, with huge concentration, bright acids and a long, penetrating finish. Standing out for its unerring precision, impeccable balance and ineffable sense of completeness, it should prove almost immortal. April 2022

Full bodied, the palate is laden with black and red fruit layers, supported by very firm, very finely grained tannins and provocative freshness, finishing with incredible length and stunningly perfumed. CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET 2016
Pauillac, 5ième Cru Classé 2 x marked labels.
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Pontet-Canet hits the ground running with a hedonic nose of Black Forest cake, crème de cassis and blueberry pie plus suggestions of candied violets, hoisin, chocolate mint, charcuteries and forest floor with a waft of star anise.
Full-bodied, rich, profoundly layered and powerfully fruited, the palate is built like a brick house, with very firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and harmonious freshness, finishing with incredible length and depth. Still incredibly primary and yet already strutting so many layers, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this warrants the three-digit score in a few years’ time. May 2020 Drink to 2060 WA 98+

1 bt. per lot $1,200 - $1,400
CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2015
Margaux, 1er Cru Classé
Special Commemorative Bottle. The 2015 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Medium garnet-purple colored, the nose features oh-so-seductive notes of warm blackberries, cassis and black forest cake with touches of forest floor, sandalwood, anise and cigar boxes plus a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers taut, muscular, densely packed black fruits and exotic spice flavor layers supported by a very firm backbone of grainy tannins with oodles of freshness and a long, savory finish. It is tightly knit and a little reticent at this very youthful stage; afford it at least 15 years in the cellar, and it will open out into a classic Chateau Margaux of incredible proportions. Readers may be interested to know that this wine is beautifully packaged in a special commemorative bottle honoring winemaker Paul Pontellier, who passed away in 2016. The goldetched black bottle bears the message, “Hommage à Paul Pontellier” at the bottom. This 2015 is an achingly beautiful swan song from an incredibly gifted winemaker, taken from us too soon. In my view, this alone makes this vintage more than worth the investment for the many lovers of history in a bottle. February 2018 Drink: 2023-2050 WS 99 WA 99 JS 100

TOSCANA IGT 2014
Tuscany
u. 2 x vts. 2 x wrinkled & marked labels.
The 2014 Masseto has developed beautifully over the past few years of its oak and bottle evolution. This is a very distinctive edition of the iconic Italian Merlot that delivers a silky and streamlined approach. As bold and opulent as Masseto is in the warm vintages, I personally find those wines difficult to finish because the extract, concentration and intensity are so over the top. The best vintages of Masseto usually overpower any food dish you put before them. This is a subdued and downplayed expression instead. The cool summer season has shaped fresh berry notes of wild blackberry and cassis with drying mineral, tobacco, licorice and tar. April 2017 WA 94

TOSCANA IGT 2015
Tuscany
u. vts. marked label.
The wine is absolutely teeming with sensorial spirit that is transmitted through the bounty of the bouquet and the solid tannins of the mouthfeel. Nothing about the wine goes unnoticed or unchecked. Its many working pieces fit together with precision like a well-oiled machine. The 2015 vintage is characterized by a level of sheer exuberance that also defined the 2004 and 2007 vintages. Yet, it also reveals similar power, directness and linearity that we saw in the 2010 vintage. The 2015 Masseto takes the best of all those past vintages and confines those qualities to this single, spectacular bottle. September 2018 Drink to 2050 WA 100

Those distinctive notes of macchia mediterranea (wild bush) that I always associate with Masseto are less present in this vintage. This wine is chiseled and sharp with blackberry, ripe cherry, grilled herb and barbecue spice. The aromas flow from the glass in a continuous stream and are all marked by radiant intensity. The mouthfeel is long and powerful. The crisp linearity of the wine’s tannic backbone is perfectly measured to the volume and depth of the fruit flavors. To my mind, the 2016 Sassicaia stands tall next to the epic 1985 vintage that set the ultimate benchmark for vino italiano. January 2019

The 2013 Tignanello represents the beginning of a new chapter for Italy’s ultimate game-changer wine. The winemaking formula remains the same, but one of the major differences and benefits to this wine is vineyard age. The celebrated Tignanello single vineyard is now reaching 15 years old. In other words, it is in its production prime. This is a harmonious and beautifully integrated wine that reveals black fruit and baking spice. December 2016 Drink to 2035 WS 94 WA 96 VM 95+

A classic example of central Tuscan Cabernet at its best, ruby-purple in color, warm and explosive in its expression of black currant fruit, tobacco, tar, and graphite, superbly concentrated and dense on the palate but balanced and shapely at the same time and with a noble austerity and grip on the finish which resembles the best of Bordeaux. DOMINUS ESTATE 2019 (OWC)
The 2019 Dominus is blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged in 40% new French oak. Impressively dark-hued in the glass, it yields scents of cherries and cassis on the nose—or is it black cherries and redcurrants? Subtle notes of mocha, pencil shavings and almost Graves-like earthiness wind through the concentrated, medium to full-bodied palate, giving it a sense of savory gravitas, while the finish is silky and long, leaving a lingering residue of soft tannins and mouthwatering freshness. Pomerol u. bn.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is locked down tight at first sniff, requiring a good amount of air to begin to reveal profound notions of stewed black plums, mulberries and black cherry compote, plus hints of black truffles, damp soil, tobacco leaf and chargrill with an emerging waft of cedar. The full-bodied palate is a full-on volcano of black fruit and molten rock waiting to erupt, with a solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with amazing length. There is a lot going on here, but it is a wine for the patient. Give it a good 5-7 years in bottle, at least, and drink it over the next 30+ years. October 2017 Drink: 2026-2056 WA 97+

2016 Tignanello is a rock-solid wine and a stunning beauty. The wine offers an impeccable level of precision and laser-focus delivery of fruits, spices, tilled earth, espresso beans and Mediterranean herbs. This vintage follows the classic blending formula of 80% Sangiovese with about 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. The vines are now 15 to 20 years old. Compared to the 2015 vintage that ultimately appeared more chewy and succulent, this expression from the iconic 2016 vintage is more vibrant, nervous and jazzed. It shows more savory spice, saltiness and minerality, with a beautifully integrated quality of tannins. Some 320,000 bottles were produced. This wine is at the top of the list of some of the best Tignanello ever made, including the vintages 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2015. May 2019 Drink to 2045 WS 97 WA 97 JS 97 VM 98

2018 Tignanello is quite the dapper and jovial wine that hits the market just as much of the world is emerging from a dark chapter of lockdowns and coronavirus curfews. This wine is beautiful and compelling straight out of the gate, showing a lovely mix of dark fruit, oak spice, balanced freshness, textural richness, soft tannins and an expertly contained 14% alcohol content. The wine’s immediate character is what distinguishes this vintage, and I wouldn’t get too fussed by exaggerated cellar-aging ambitions. The wine awards sheer pleasure in its current form, with dazzling primary fruit and soaring intensity over the near and medium term. January 2023 Drink to 2042 WA 96

Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. 2 x vts. 1 x marked label.
Truly great stuff, this wine performed at a three-digit level both in the horizontal tasting of 2005s in Baltimore, as well as in Montreal at this mini-vertical. This sensational, opaque, bluish/purple wine offers up notes of vanillin, spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, plus a touch of licorice. The wine hits the palate with a thunderous cascade of ripe, rich, concentrated fruit. It is full-bodied, multidimensional and layered. The tannins are beautifully integrated but still present, and the wood, acidity, alcohol, etc., are all beautifully assimilated in this magnificent, majestic vintage of Angelus. It can be drunk now, but it is still an adolescent and that suggests it has at least another 25-35 years of longevity. August 2015 WA 100

SALON CHAMPAGNE BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT 2008
Champagne wrinkled label.
Seamless and unerringly precise, it concludes with a long and penetratingly mineral finish. Immense though its potential for aging is, its intensity and balance make it pleasurable as well as persuasive, even today. Given the eyewatering price of this magnum-only release, I was determined to hold the wine to the highest possible standards, but it surpasses even the prodigious 1996 and surely ranks as the finest Salon since at least the 1970s. In short, this is a Blanc de Blancs that admits no argument. March 2021 WA 100

Unwinding in the glass with notes of citrus oil, wet stones, freshly baked bread, white currants and oyster shell, it’s full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a tightly wound core of fruit, racy acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse. Concluding with a long and resonant finish, this is a structured and powerful Salon that’s a lot more incisive than, for example, the 2002 at the same stage, but which also carries more muscle and substance than a leaner vintage such as 2007. TAITTINGER CHAMPAGNE COMTES DE CHAMPAGNE BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT 2013
Champagne
Derived from a long, slow ripening season marked by cool nights and an October harvest, it is slightly less acid-driven and a touch fleshier than the 2008, offering up a deep bouquet of nashi pear, lemon confit, freshly baked bread, almond paste and a gentle smoky reduction edge. On the palate, it is full-bodied and incisive, with a concentrated core of fruit, bright acids and considerable tension, culminating in a persistent, saline finish. While already indicative of its potential, its best days are still ahead, and it should continue to improve over the next two decades or more. December 2025 Drink to 2053 WA 96+

LOUIS ROEDERER CHAMPAGNE CRISTAL BRUT
ROSÉ 2012 (OC)
Champagne
The 2012 Cristal Rosé is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with a beautiful bouquet of fresh peach, bergamot, strawberries, tangerine and blanched almonds that’s still quite reserved. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and strikingly complete, its vinous attack segueing into a multidimensional core that exemplifies the ideal of power without weight, built around a racy but integrated spine of animating acidity and complemented by an exquisitely refined mousse. All the concentration of the 2012 vintage is on display, but it’s rendered with terrific finesse. Decidedly youthful and introverted—indeed, I spent several hours with a bottle to compose this note—the 2012 will really come into its own with five or six years in the cellar and displays all the attributes necessary for considerable longevity. It’s a blend of 56% Pinot Noir and 44% Chardonnay that saw no malolactic fermentation, and it was disgorged with eight grams per liter dosage. March 2020 Drink to 2065 WA 98

LE PERGOLE TORTE TOSCANA IGT

The 2020 Le Pergole Torte feels initially shy, but that is a fleeting impression because its all-around intensity builds beautifully upon dark cherry, blackcurrant, spice, iris root and warm earth. Those notes are followed by a delicate floral interlude, and the wine builds upward again with a very bright and lively mouthfeel fueled by fine tannins and lovely freshness. It is fleshy and rich.

TOSCANA IGT 2016

One of Italy’s most sought-after and collectible unicorn wines, the Soldera Case Basse 2016 100% Sangiovese is mysterious, illusive and hard to find. From a classic vintage, the wine’s personality is extremely delicate and ethereal, following lock in step with the house style passionately promoted and secured by the late Gianfranco Soldera. The man himself, remembered as an outspoken genius who made invaluable contributions to the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, died in 2019. This vintage was made under his watchful eye, and it ties in nicely with recent past releases of this wine (once a Brunello) now labeled rather matter-of-factly (and with a tinge of provocation) 100% Sangiovese. The bouquet offers wild cherry, blue flower, candied orange peel and hints of rusty nail. The mouthfeel is polished, fine and silky. There is a hint of iodine or medicinal gel that will not appeal to everyone, but then again, beauty is sometimes found in the unexpected. January 2022 Drink to 2040 WA 94

The legendary Gianfranco Soldera died the morning of February 16, 2019, from a heart attack while driving along the bucolic, vineyard-lined road near his winery. That means this is the last vintage manned directly by Soldera, a man who remained extremely active in the vineyards and the winery until the very end. His sendoff to us is a delicately nuanced wine with cassis, wild berry, rosemary, pencil shaving and blood orange. This is a beautiful wine that pays tribute not only to Gianfranco Soldera but to his non-interventionist vision of Italian wine that has influenced so many younger vintners in his wake. Roberto Conterno did not make his flagship wine, Monfortino, in 2016 or 2017, leaving all Francia fruit headed to his single-vineyard bottling instead. The Giacomo Conterno 2016 Barolo Francia is a rich and tightly knit wine with harder edges (certainly compared to the 2017) and a compact inner core of blackcurrant, licorice, smoky tar, violet and rusty nail. In fact, those pretty mineral nuances are very developed in this bottling and already show with clarity at this early stage in the wine’s evolution. They add etched concentration and a sense of austerity to this very elegant and age-worthy vintage. November 2021 Drink to 2053 WA 96+

The aromatics unfurl gracefully in the glass revealing briary, wild hedgerow, black truffle and sandalwood scents -- firmly in secondary aroma stage but with appreciable presence and intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin that form its firm and classic structure, spice, white pepper and cloves infusing the slightly animally red berry fruit. Tasted July 2016. CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ 2001
Saint-Julien, 2ième Cru Classé u. 3 x vts.
A wine that is emerging as a major sleeper of the vintage, the 2001 Léoville Poyferré bursts from the glass with aromas of cassis, ripe blackberries, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and violets. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins, it’s an intensely flavored, rather dramatic rendition of the year that has hit its plateau of maturity. Deep brick colored, the 1982 Grange has an evolved/mature, meat/gamy and spice cake nose with a waft of balsamic, old chesterfield and some pleasant funk. CHÂTEAU D’YQUEM 2010 (1 375 ML.)
Sauternes, Premier Cru Supérieur u. vts.
Pale to medium lemon-gold color, the 2010 d’Yquem has retreated into its shell at this youthful stage, offering spritely suggestions of lemon curd, lime cordial and green mango with wafts of honeysuckle, spice cake, sea spray and beeswax plus a hint of gingerbread. The palate really comes through with super intense, tightly wound citrus, savory and mineral layers carried by a laser-precise backbone of freshness, finishing with crazy persistence that lingers a full three minutes and then some. This is going to be a very exotic, opulent Yquem! March 2020 Drink to 2065 WA 98

Rosemary and sandalwood notes accent cherries on the nose, while the mediumto full-bodied palate is expansive and plush, finishing with ample length and soft tannins. October 2025 Drink to 2040 WA 95

PRIDE MOUNTAIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON
RESERVE 2016
Napa Valley
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is made up of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot aged in roughly 50% new oak. Grapes come from own-rooted vines planted in 1982 on AXR rootstock—the roots are very deep and so not affected by phylloxera; 67% of the fruit came from Napa County and 33% from Sonoma County. Deep garnet-purple colored, it strides confidently out of the glass with classic cassis, fresh blackberries, warm plums and cedar chest notes followed by nuances of charcoal, pencil lead, camphor, chocolate box and black olives. Full-bodied, the palate is charged with fantastic energy, featuring bright, exuberant black berry and earthy flavors with a firm, ripe, finely grained frame, finishing long and lively. 1,484 cases produced. September 2019 Drink to 2054 WA 98 VM 96

SCARECROW CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015
Napa Valley
Produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon leaps from the glass with gorgeous floral notes of red roses and lilacs over a core of black and red cherries, crushed black currants and baking spices plus hints of iron ore and dusty earth. The voluptuous, rounded, soft and sexy fruit slinks across the palate with incredible seamlessness and expression. Make no mistake, it is full-bodied and decadently powerful, but with a myriad of aromatic nuances, finishing long, layered and boldly perfumed. October 2017 Drink to 2039 Vinous 98+ WA 99

EL ENEMIGO CABERNET FRANC
GRAN ENEMIGO GUALTALLARY 2013 Mendoza, Argentina
It’s very intense and powerful, but at the same time, there is a kind of lightness on the palate that makes if feel light on its feet but with great inner power. There is citrus acidity that makes it effervescent and electric. It has some 7.5 grams of acidity and a pH of 3.45, very healthy parameters. The peppery character appears after some time, giving it a Chinon-like twist, and it also reminds me of my favorite Bordeaux, Pomerol’s Lafleur. This is definitely world-class and worth lying down, as it should develop further complexity in bottle. This is one of those wines where the only improvement I can think of is having magnums rather than bottles. Bravo! Some 3,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2016. CASANOVA DI NERI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO TENUTA NUOVA 2010 (OC) Tuscany
The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is a protagonist of the vintage. The fruit is deep and dark with rich levels of extract, intensity and flavor. It goes far beyond your standard cherry and blackberry to include plum cake, spice bread and bacon-wrapped prune. Nothing is obvious or monochromatic about this wine. Everything is nuanced and ethereal. Tenuta Nuova is also distinguished by the linear mineral notes that are characteristic of this single-vineyard site. In 2010, those traits are especially well-defined and pronounced. The tannins reach a level of suppleness that is almost impossible to find in the sometimes prickly and acidic Sangiovese grape. February 2015 WS 95 WA 100 JS 100

Fontodi’s 2016 Flaccianello della Pieve is a masterpiece. This vintage shows amazing depth and poise, with a sheer sense of elegance that comes from the undisputed quality of fruit achieved in this balanced vintage. The bouquet opens to dark cherry, blue flower and tilled earth. The tannins are taut, almost crunchy, and the wine offers profound pedigree and persistence that is driven by the evident acidity. That depth is what stands out most. Until the 2013 vintage, Flaccianello was aged in barrique for 24 months. After that vintage, six months of the total aging time is spent in botte instead. Some 65,000 bottles were made. July 2019

The bouquet is just so pure and refined, reminiscent of the 2005 in some way, albeit with not quite the same intensity. However, the detail is breathtakingone of those bouquets that whisks you straight to its place of birth, within those ancient stone walls in Morey-Saint-Denis. The palate is brilliantly balanced, utterly refined with lace-like tannin, perfectly pitched acidity and a gentle build in the mouth towards a glorious, saline-tinged finish that hangs like the final piano chord in an empty hall. Wondrous - perhaps the high point of Pitiot’s tenure? October 2015 Drink to 2045 WA 97 VM 98+

CHÂTEAU D’YQUEM 1997
Sauternes, Premier Cru Supérieur u. 1 x vts.
A vintage of exceptional weather, 1997 was a relatively warm, drought vintage equating to a very slow onset of botrytis this year. The warm temperatures contributed plenty of sweetness, while light rains late in the season finally spurred the spread of noble rot, making for a potentially very good Sauternes vintage in the end. However, strict selection was critical, ultimately allowing d’Yquem to craft an impressive wine well above the vintage’s standard. Drink to 2044 WA 95

CHÂTEAU PALMER 1989
Margaux, 3ième Cru Classé u. 2 x bn. 2 x vts. 4 x scraped labels.
Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 1989 Château Palmer has always been my favourite vintage from that decade after the 1983. The first bottle was unfortunately corked. The second was as it should be: the nose tensile with red berries, sous-bois, potpourri and strawberry pastille - lively and energetic. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant right from the start, silky in texture with plenty of citrus fruit, gently building to a harmonious and detailed finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a magnificent Château Palmer that continues to effortlessly dish out so much vinous pleasure. Tasted May 2015. WA 96

CHÂTEAU SOCIANDO-MALLET 2005
Haut-Médoc
u. 5 x bn. 3 x stained labels.
It’s hard not to admire the brilliant Jean Gautreau, who has run this great terroir and estate (just to the north of St-Estèphe’s Château Montrose) with meticulous perfection for decades. The 2005 is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. Offering beautifully sweet crème de cassis and blueberries, this is concentrated essence of blue and black fruits, with some underlying minerality, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and stunning texture, length and purity. This is superb Sociando Mallet, with surprisingly sweet tannin, which is even more remarkable in this vintage of high and occasionally hard tannins. Give it another 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30 years. June 2015 Drink to 2050 WA 93+

Another unbelievably rich, multidimensional, broad-shouldered wine, with slightly more elegance and less weight than the powerhouse 1996, this gorgeously proportioned, medium to full-bodied, fabulously ripe, rich, cassisscented and flavored Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a beauty. It should be drinkable within 4-5 years, and keep for 25-30. This classic Pauillac is a worthy rival to the otherworldly 1996. February 1998 WS 93 WA 95

COMTESSE DE LALANDE 1996
Pauillac, 2ième Cru Classé 4 x soiled labels.
The 1996 Pichon-Lalande has long been one of the high points of this Pauillac estate and now at 20 years of age it is firing on all cylinders. You cannot have any complaints against the nose: intense blackberry, cedar and graphite, all beautifully delineated, demand your attention. The palate offers exquisite balance, refined and yet intense, the Cabernet Sauvignon clearly in the driving seat but assisted by the Merlot that imparts the crucial fleshy texture on the finish. Red berry fruit, cigar box, mint, juniper berries ... this is a complex and riveting Pauillac wine that is going to cruise along its drinking plateau for many years. This is outstanding. A candidate for the “wine of the vintage,” Pontet Canet’s 2008 boasts an opaque purple color as well as copious aromas of sweet blueberries, blackberries and black currant fruit intertwined with lead pencil shavings, subtle barbecue smoke and a hint of forest floor. Full-bodied, with fabulous richness, texture and tremendous freshness, this first-growthlike effort is more developed than the uber-powerful 2010. Bravo! Drink to 2046 May 2011 WA 96

Pauillac, 5ième Cru Classé

The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannin, well-judged acidity, a gentle grip in the mouth, and plenty of lightly spiced and surprisingly intense fruit on the bravura finish. The Cazes family oversaw a very sophisticated Lynch-Bages in this vintage that may well surpass many peoples’ expectations. Tasted January 2016 Drink to 2035 WA 93

CHÂTEAU DUHART-MILON 2009
Pauillac, 4ième Cru Classé u. 4 x bn.
A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot, it displays an inky/blue/ purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice, lead pencil, cedar and subtle barrique smells. Viscous and full-bodied, it is the most concentrated and broadest example of this cuvee I have tasted in over three decades. It will be ready to drink in 5-7 years and should last for three decades or more. Consumers looking to maximize value should be checking out Duhart Milon, as this may be the single smartest purchase in this great and historic vintage! December 2011 WS 92 WA 97

CHÂTEAU MONTROSE 1989
Saint-Estèphe, 2ième Cru Classé u. 1 x bn. 2 x marked & stained labels.
It is an unusual two-grade blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. This is a magnificent Montrose, showing notes of loamy soil undertones, intermixed with forest floor, blueberry and blackberry liqueur and spring flowers. It has a fullbodied, intense, concentrated mouthfeel that is every bit as majestic as the 1990, but possibly slightly fresher and more delineated. This great wine should drink well for another 40-50 years. (Tasted August 2014) WS 96 WA 98+

It remains one of the outstanding wines of a very black and white vintage. Without knowledge of the vintage, I was hesitant to suggest 2003, because though there is clearly fruit intensity locked up inside this Saint Estèphe, it is counterbalanced by the estate’s trademark masculinity and austerity. So both on the nose and the palate it reaches this happy medium: pure blackberry, graphite and roasted herbs on the nose, perhaps even more elegant than I have observed on previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied rather than full bodied with sturdy tannins couched in layers of seamless blackberry and cassis fruit, offset by scents of tobacco and graphite. As usual it has immense length and depth, a Montrose that is really just a few chapters into what is sure to be a longer “book” than many other 2003s. It is not a perfect Montrose, but a couple of hairs’ breadth away. Tasted February 2017. WS 95 WA 98

Hallelujah—what a glorious nose! The deep garnet colored 2009 Montrose features beautiful Black Forest cake, licorice, crème de cassis and warm blueberries scents with hints of charcoal, truffles, tapenade and menthol plus a waft of star anise. CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE LAS CASES 1986
Saint-Julien, 2ième Cru Classé
u. 2 x vts. 2 x wrinkled labels. 1 x corroded capsule.
The 1986 Leoville-Las Cases is still so youthful in appearance after 30 years, with only a thin bricking on the rim giving away its age. The bouquet is magnificent: extraordinarily pure and delineated, bewitching black fruit laced with cedar and graphite, the latter lending an almost Pauillac-like personality. The palate is exactly as I have found the previous dozen or so bottles I have tasted: structured, delineated, intense, aristocratic and imperious. It is less formidable than say, ten years ago, so it has probably just stepped onto its drinking plateau. The acidity is perfectly judged lending freshness and tension, crucial to counterbalance those layers of spicy black fruit that fans out with cedar and graphite (again) towards the finish. CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE LAS CASES 1990
Saint-Julien, 2ième Cru Classé u. 2 x bn.
As one might expect, this is a brilliant wine, but it remains shockingly young, even for the fast evolving 1990s. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic, nearly restrained set of aromatics that includes notions of sweet black cherries, black currants, lead pencil, and wet stones. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, and while technically low in acidity, there is a freshness, delineation, and classicism in this full-throttle, rich, concentrated, impeccable 1990. While still youthful, it is easy to appreciate despite its substantial tannins. It is not quite as backward as the 1990 Lafite Rothschild or 1990 Latour. Anticipated maturity: now-2035. u. 2 x vts. 2 x ts. 4 x stained, wrinkled, & scraped labels. 1 x corroded capsule.
A fabulous wine, and one of the two greatest Talbots of the last 50 years, this wine still has a very murky garnet/plum/ purple color and a spectacular nose of sweet creme de cassis intermixed with freshly ground pepper, melted road tar, herbes de Provence, and beef blood. It is followed by an enormously concentrated wine of full body, layers of concentration and sweet tannin. The wine seems to be just hitting its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least 10-15 more years. A prodigious Talbot. December 2002 WA 96

Saint-Julien, 2ième Cru Classé u. 4 x bn. 1 x vts.
The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bottled in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I often associate with top vintages of Lafite-Rothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. The wine possesses high tannin, but it is extremely ripe, and the sweetness of the black currant, spice-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is pronounced. This profound, backward Ducru-Beaucaillou is a must purchase. It will be fascinating for readers who own the 1996 to follow the evolution of this exceptional vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035. Saint-Julien, 2ième Cru Classé u. 1 x vts. 2 x ts. 3 x scraped & wrinkled labels.
Still tasting as if it were only 7-8 years of age, the dense, garnet/purple-colored 1986 Gruaud-Larose is evolving at a glacier pace. The wine still has mammoth structure, tremendous reserves of fruit and concentration, and a finish that lasts close to a minute. The wine is massive, very impressively constituted, with still some mouth-searing tannin to shed. Decanting of one to two hours in advance seems to soften it a bit, but this is a wine that seems to be almost immortal in terms of its longevity. It is a great Medoc classic, and certainly one of the most magnificent Gruaud-Larose ever made. December 2002 Drink to 2035 WA 96

The 1998 La Mission Haut-Brion is deep garnet-brick colored with a pretty perfume of potpourri, spice box, menthol, sandalwood, tobacco and new leather. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant with tons of fragrant layers, finishing with loads of mineral and tons of energy. Drink up to 2030. May 2018 WA 97

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BAILLY 2008
Pessac-Léognan, Grand Cru Classé
u. 3 x bn.
A candidate for the -wine of the vintage, the 2008 Haut-Bailly possesses incredible complexity. Tell-tale notes of lead pencil shavings, charcoal, damp earth, black cherries and black currants intermixed with a hint of subtle barbecue smoke are present in this classic, quintessential Graves. Medium-bodied with an emerging, precocious complexity, it is a super-pure, beautifully textured, long wine that can be drunk now or cellared for 20-25 years. Bravo! May 2011 WA 96

Pomerol
Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Trotanoy is clearly blossoming in bottle. Over almost 20 years of tasting out of barrel, I cannot recall a Trotanoy that has so surpassed its showing at en primeur. It has a well-defined bouquet that initially seems straightforward. Don’t be fooled...it opens in the glass and reveals subtle red berry fruit, truffle and ferrous aromas. There is stunning definition and poise here. The palate is mediumbodied with filigree tannin. There is a core of wonderful Cabernet Franc here, the acidity extremely well judged with a precise, sustained finish. This is a sophisticated Pomerol with élan and no more, no less than a fabulous Trotanoy. Tasted January 2016. October 2016 Only 1,341 cases made. WS 96 WA 96

Pomerol
u. 1 x bn. 1 x vts. 2 x wrinkled & scraped labels.
The only problem that the 1990 Château La Conseillante has faced is that it had to follow up the brilliant 1989. Here, tasted directly against the previous vintage, it seems more youthful in color than the 1989. The nose races out of the blocks, more precocious than I remember and yet never losing focus, offering kirsch, crushed violets and still that subtle marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannin. It offers wonderful black truffle, morels and mulberry fruit, as powerful as the 1989, albeit not quite with the same precision on the finish. It is the purity of the La Conseillante that wins you over time and time again, and I would not hesitate in enjoying this Pomerol over the next decade. It will never quite match the 1989, but hey, don’t hold that against this beauty. Tasted January 2016. Drink to 2033 WA 94

CHÂTEAU LA FLEUR-PÉTRUS 2012 (OWC)
Pomerol
Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 La Fleur Pétrus has a mint-fresh bouquet, vigorous and vivid, with delineated red cherry, raspberry and cassis fruit under which is a strata of wet limestone. The palate is mediumbodied with fine tannin. This is a more understated Pomerol but there is real nuance here, black truffle and leather tinging the introspective black fruit. Yet behind that is harmony and finesse, notwithstanding impressive length and sustain. It may be slightly over-shadowed by the sensational Trotanoy, but Pomerollovers will lap up this fantastic La FleurPetrus from the JP Moueix team. Tasted January 2016. Drink to 2045 WS 94 WA 96 JS 94

CHÂTEAU CANON 2015 (OWC)
Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé
It has a very intense bouquet (just as it showed out of barrel) with laserlike precision offering wild strawberry, raspberry preserve, wet limestone and hints of truffle. The palate is mediumbodied with supple tannin, clean and fresh with pure black and red fruit whose every atom appears infused with minerals. The mouth is tingling long after the wine has exited and your brain is thinking... when is the next sip coming? It is frankly heads and shoulders above almost every Saint Émilion this vintage, to reaffirm, a benchmark for this historic estate that will give pleasure to many over the coming years. Astonishing. CHÂTEAU ANGÉLUS 1989
Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. 1 x bn. 1 x vts.
A beautiful sweet blueberry and blackberry-scented nose of olive, licorice and cedar wood is followed by a fullbodied and opulent wine, with hints of espresso roast and chocolate as well. It seemed to gain a lot in the glass, but the astringent tannins in the finish still seem a bit awkward and distracting. I think bottles I’ve had have generally shown better, although this is certainly an exceptional wine. It has just suffered somewhat in comparison with several of the other vintages. The 1998 Pavie is deep garnet-brick in color. So much fruit comes charging out of the gate here: profound crème de cassis, baked blackberries and blackberry preserves with notions of beef dripping, crushed rocks, unsmoked cigar, sandalwood and dried lavender. Big, rich and beautifully impactful, it is completely packed with taut, muscular black and blue fruit preserves, maintaining nice firm grainy tannins with layer after layer of exotic spices, meat and earth notions, finishing epically long and minerally. CHÂTEAU D’YQUEM 1990
Sauternes, Premier Cru Supérieur u. 2 x vts.
1990: An extraordinary effort, Yquem’s 1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesses lots of elegance and finesse. The wine’s medium gold color is accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the palate, with layers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged, exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisingly well-integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power and richness have created a wine of remarkable harmony and purity. Certainly it is one of the richest Yquems I have ever tasted, with 50-100 years of potential longevity. An awesome Yquem! Anticipated maturity: 2050+. April 1999 WA 99

DOMINUS ESTATE 1994
Napa Valley
2 x wrinkled labels. 1 x stained label.
The 1994 is a strikingly thick, compellingly rich wine with the texture of a great Pomerol, despite being made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine exhibits a dense purple color, and an incredibly fragrant nose of jammy black fruits, spice, smoke, and loamy, truffle-like scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, with thrilling levels of extract and richness, but no sense of heaviness or harshness. This seamless Dominus possesses no hard edges, as its acidity, tannin, and alcohol are beautifully meshed with copious quantities of ripe fruit. This wine offers early drinking, yet has the potential to last for 30+ years. December 1997 WA 99

DOMINUS ESTATE 2010
Napa Valley u. vts.
Composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the stunning, full-bodied 2010 Dominus boasts an exceptional perfume of hoisin sauce, licorice, underbrush, forest floor, plums, black currants and jammy cherries intertwined with hints of cedar, baking spices and oak. Full-bodied and voluptuously textured, the 2010 is on a slightly faster evolutionary track than the 2009 (somewhat of an anomaly for these two vintages). This exquisite as well as prodigious 2010 can be drunk young, but it should age effortlessly for 20-25 years. Bravo! WA 100

TENUTA SAN GUIDO BOLGHERI SASSICAIA 2010
Tuscany scraped & marked label.
The 2010 Sassicaia was just released and it’s an outstanding bottle. I think that people are going to love this newest Sass. The red is very aromatic with currant, dried berry, cocoa bean, and hints of wood. It’s full-bodied, with intense yet very polished tannins and a long finish. It’s very refined and beautiful with a tangy finish. The Cabernet Franc comes through here at the finish. Lively. Hard not to drink now. June 2013 jamessuckling.com WA 94 JS 94

LUCIANO SANDRONE BAROLO CANNUBI
BOSCHIS 2004
Piedmont
u. 2 x 1.5 cm.
I was blown away by the breathtaking purity and definition of Sandrone’s 2004 Barolo Cannubi Boschis. A translucent dark ruby, this weightless yet sumptuous Barolo bursts from the glass with layers of dark ripe fruit that coat the palate with stunning grace and elegance. As it sits in the glass notes of licorice, tar and sweet toasted oak gradually emerge to complete this magnificent wine. I tasted this along with the 2001, which has shut down considerably since I last tasted it earlier this year. Today the 2004 is the more elegant wine although the 2001 looks to be more powerful and perhaps longer-lived. My rating of the 2001 (95) appears to have been conservative by about 2 points. One of the highlights of the vintage, Sandrone’s 2004 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 20122024. WS 95 WA 98

CHÂTEAU LA MISSION HAUT-BRION
2005
Pessac-Léognan, Grand Cru Classé
The 2005 La Mission Haut-Brion is pure perfection. It has an absolutely extraordinary nose of sweet blackberries, cassis and spring flowers with some underlying minerality, a full-bodied mouthfeel, gorgeously velvety tannins (which is unusual in this vintage) and a long, textured, multi-layered finish that must last 50+ seconds. This is a fabulous wine and a great effort from this hallowed terroir. Drink this modern-day legend over the next 30+ years. This is a classic vintage of an Italian icon now celebrating its 50th vintage. The Tenuta San Guido 2018 Bolgheri Sassicaia lays out a familiar blueprint that borrows from the proven track record of this landmark estate that extends into the hills just beyond the Tyrrhenian shores of Tuscany. The 2000 Alzero wafts from the glass with an intriguing melange of white and black truffles, roasted coffee beans, wild herbs, blackberries and new saddle leather. This intriguing, beguiling wine captures the essence of the 2000 vintage at Quintarelli. Layers of radiant, perfumed fruit flow effortlessly to the round, polished finish. The 2000 Alzero is another brilliant wine from Quintarelli. Alzero is predominantly Cabernet Franc, made Amarone-style, in which the fruit is dried for several months prior to vinification and subsequent aging in medium-size casks. February 2011 WA 96

Ripe, long and full-bodied with well-integrated tannin, acidity, alcohol and wood, this prodigious 2001 is drinkable now and over the next 25+ years given this estate’s longevity track record. FONTODI FLACCIANELLO DELLA PIEVE 2014
Tuscany
u. 6 x bn. 1 x scuffed label.
The 2014 vintage aged in oak a bit longer than usual in order to give the wine more time to flesh out and gain in volume. Yields were down considerably in 2014, and there is 30% less Flaccianello in this vintage compared to average. What saves the day is the wine’s fresh acidity. It acts like a glue, connecting all the various parts of this wine and infusing them tightly together to form a complete and compelling whole. June 2019 Drink to 2038 WA 95

FONTODI FLACCIANELLO DELLA
PIEVE 2016
Tuscany
u. 6 x bn.
July 2019 Drink to 2050 WA 100 JS 95 VM 100

This monumental expression of Sangiovese delivers top-notch intensity with seamless integration of aromas. They span from dark fruit and Morello cherry to chocolate, spice, licorice, balsam herb and rosemary sprig. The energy and vitality of the vintage is locked perfectly within. This Brunello exhibits especially soft, silky tannins with long persistence and momentum. There is nothing out of place and the price tag is certainly not exaggerated for this level of excellence. All lots will be offered and sold subject to the Conditions of Sale which appear in this catalogue as well as any Glossary and posted or oral announcement. By bidding at auction, bidders are bound by those Conditions and Glossary, as amended by any oral announcement or posted notices, which together form the contract of sale between the successful bidder (buyer), Waddington’s™ and the consignor (seller) of the lot. Descriptions or photographs of lots are not warranties and each lot is sold “as is” in accordance with the Conditions of Sale.
All of the items are to be considered, unless otherwise noted in the description, in good condition. It is the sole responsibility of the bidder to inquire as to the condition of a lot before bidding. Condition reports are available upon request by phone, fax, email or in person. You are advised to make any requests well in advance of the sale.
A premium of 20% of the successful bid price of each lot is paid by the buyer as part of the total purchase price.
A charge of 13% HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is applicable on the hammer price and buyer’s premium, except for purchases exported from Canada. In the case where purchases are shipped out of the province of Ontario, the HST or GST is charged based on the tax status of that province.
Registration for our online auctions is completed through our website. Once registered, you will be assigned a bidding number for an online auction when you log into your account. You only need to register once to participate in all of our online auctions.
payment
Payment for purchases must be by INTERAC direct debit (Cdn clients in person only), certified cheque (U.S. & Overseas not applicable), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000).

notice for our international clients
Certain states or other countries may impose limitations on the amount of and quantity of alcoholic beverages that can be legally brought into their jurisdiction. Waddington’s is not responsible for obtaining shipping permits or licenses and advise our clients to investigate any possible limitations imposed by their local region.
1. Waddington’s conducts auctions of fine wine and rare spirits as agent for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (the “LCBO”) and all such auctions are authorized by the LCBO. All auction sales shall be deemed to take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
2. All purchasers of alcoholic beverages through an auction must be nineteen (19) years of age or older. Proof of age may be required prior to the transfer of any purchased goods, including, but not limited provision of photo identification.
3. All lots are sold “AS IS”. Any description issued by the auctioneer of an article to be sold is subject to variation to be posted or announced verbally in the auction room prior to the time of sale. While the auctioneer has endeavoured not to mislead in the description issued, and the utmost care is taken to ensure the correct cataloguing of each item, such descriptions are purely statements of opinion and are not intended to constitute a representation to the prospective purchasers and no warranty of the correctness of such description is made. No opportunity of inspection is offered prior to the time of sale. No sale will be set aside on account of lack of correspondence of the article with its description or its reproduction, if any, whether colour or black & white. Some lots are of an age and/or nature which preclude their being in pristine condition and some catalogue descriptions make reference to damage and/or restoration. The lack of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference to certain defects imply the absence of others.
4. Each lot sold is subject to a buyer’s premium of 20% of the successful bid price as part of the purchase price.
5. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay Harmonized Sales Tax on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of country. Items shipped out of Ontario, the buyer is required to
pay taxes as per the tax status of that province, whether it HST or GST (Goods and Services Tax). Purchasers are solely responsible for ensuring that they comply with all laws or regulations in relation to international shipping or the import of alcohol, including, but not limited to the payment of customs charges and duties.
6. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice.
7. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid, may not be recognized.
8. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. As previously agreed to as between the auctioneer and the consignor, the auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale.
9. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer’s decision in all cases shall be final.
10. The auctioneer will notify the successful buyer that they have won the bid.
11. The buyer shall pay for all lots within 48 hours from the date of the sale, after which a late charge of 2% per month on the total invoice may be incurred or the auctioneer, in his sole discretion, may cancel the sale. The buyer shall not become the owner of the lot until paid for in full. Items must be removed within 30 days from the date of sale, after which storage charges will be incurred at a rate of $4.00 per case per month.
12. Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or affiliated storage facility at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away.
13. Notwithstanding Section 3, if the buyer, prior to removal of a lot, makes arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for the inspection of such lot by a fully qualified person acceptable to the auctioneer to determine the genuineness or authenticity of the lot, to be carried out promptly following the sale of the lot, and if, but only if, within a period of 14 days following the sale a written opinion of such person is presented to the auctioneer to the effect that the lot is not genuine or authentic, accompanied by a written request by the buyer for rescission of the sale, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the sale price refunded to the buyer.
14. Payment for purchases must be by INTERAC direct debit (applicable to Canadian in-person clients only), certified cheque (not applicable to U.S. and international sales), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), and VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000).
15. In the event of failure to pay for or remove articles within the time limit set out in Section 11, the auctioneer, without limitation of the rights of the consignor and the auctioneer against the buyer, may resell any of the articles affected, and in such case the original buyer shall be responsible to the auctioneer and the consignor for:
any deficiency in price between the re-sale amount and the amount to have been paid by the original buyer; charges in relation to the storage of such articles in accordance with Section 11 until payment and removal by the subsequent buyer; and the amount of commission which the auctioneer would have earned had payment been made in full by the original buyer.
16. It is the responsibility of the buyer to make all arrangements for insuring, packing and removing the Consigned Goods purchased and any assistance by the auctioneer or his servants, agents or contractors, in packing or removal shall be rendered as a courtesy and without any liability to them.
17. The auctioneer acts solely as agent for the consignor and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles consigned for sale.
18. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse admission to the sale or to refuse to recognize any or all bids from any particular person or persons at any auction.
19. If you are a licensee licensed to sell liquor under the Liquor License Act and you purchase alcoholic beverages in an auction to resell pursuant to your license, you must provide Waddington’s with a copy of your license.
20. With respect to our collection of your personal information, you acknowledge the following:
The personal information required is collected on behalf of the LCBO under the authority of Sections 3(1)(b), (n) and (o) and 3(2)(f) of the Liquor Control Act, for the purposes of controlling the purchase and sale of liquor by auction in Ontario.;
The collection of your personal information will be collected in compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
We may disclose information relating to the auction, including but not limited to your personal information, to the LCBO.
Consent to disclose your personal information to a third party for storage and certain fulfilment services, strictly limited to the minimum required to validate the pick up of purchased goods.
Any questions in relation to the collection of your personal information pursuant to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act should be forwarded to us and we will forward the question on your behalf to the Manager of Freedom of Information and Privacy at the LCBO.
For wines in bottles with defined shoulders, including Bordeaux, Port, and other wines, the level is measured and catalogued as follows:
BN. BASE NECK: Perfectly good for any age of wine. Outstandingly good for a wine of 10 years in bottle, or longer.
VTS. VERY TOP SHOULDER
TS. TOP SHOULDER: Normal for any Bordeaux 15 years old or older.
HS. HIGH SHOULDER: Slight natural reduction through the easing of the cork and evaporation through cork and capsule. Usually no problem. Acceptable for any wine over 20 years old. Exceptional for pre-1950 wines.
MS. MID SHOULDER: Probably some weakening of the cork and some risk. Not abnormal for wines 30 - 40 years of age. Estimates usually take this into account.
LS. LOW SHOULDER: Risky and usually only accepted for sale if wine or label exceptionally rare or interesting. Always offered with low estimate.
BS. BOTTOM SHOULDER: Not acceptable for sale unless a rare sort of bottle. Wine will usually be undrinkable.
U. ULLAGE: Level.
Example: (u. 2ts) means 2 bottles ullaged to top shoulder.
OC. ORIGINAL CARTON
OWC. ORIGINAL WOODEN CASE
RC. RESERVE CH âTEAU
For wines in bottles with sloping necks, including Burgundy, German and other wines, the level between the cork and wine is measured and catalogued in centimetres.
The condition and drinkability of Burgundy is less affected by ullage than its equivalent from Bordeaux. A 5 - 7 cm ullage in a 50-year-old Burgundy can be considered normal, indeed good for age; 3.5-4 cm excellent for age; 7 cm rarely a risk.
Example: (u. 3x5cm) means 3 bottles ullaged 5 cm.
HF. BT. HALF BOTTLE = 0.375 litres
BT(S). BOTTLE(S) = 0.75 litres
LTR. LITRE
MAG. MAGNUM = 1.5 litres, or two regular bottles
D. MAG. DOUBLE MAGNUM (BORDEAUX, PORT) = 3 litres
JERO. JEROBOAM (BURGUNDY, CHAMPAGNE) = 3 litres
JERO. JEROBOAM (BORDEAUX) = 5 litres*
IMP. IMPÉRIALE (BORDEAUX) = 6 litres
METH. METHUSELAH (BURGUNDY, CHAMPAGNE) = 6 litres
SALM. SALMANAZAR = 9 litres
*Up to 1978, jeroboams were generally bottled in 4.5-ltr. bottles.
WA Wine Advocate WS Wine Spectator
Special notice: Though every effort is made to describe or measure the levels of older vintages, corks over 20 years old begin to lose their elasticity and levels can change between cataloguing and sale. Old corks have also been known to fail during or after shipment. We therefore repeat that there is always a risk of cork failure with old wines and due allowance must be made for this. Under no circumstances can an adjustment of price or credit be made after delivery except under the terms of the warranty stated in the Conditions of Sale.
