After years of shared previews, the symbiotic relationship between our Decorative Arts and International Art departments is officially cemented in this catalogue. Our first session on December 9th is dedicated to Decorative Arts, but our second session December 10th presents both disciplines. You will truly enjoy how beautifully it all comes together. We knew we had a stellar Decorative Arts sale when the set of Russian Imperial Porcelain plates from the Raphael Service arrived. In their original box, bearing the royal cyphers of both Alexander III and Nicholas II, these plates are extremely rare and extraordinary in that they have remained together - and in such good condition. The first session also features silver of first-rate craftsmanship, including work by Paul Storr and Robert Garrard. We are very pleased as well to be offering the Connolly Collection from Montreal, which along with good early Meissen and Picasso ceramics, includes some of the best English blue and white porcelain we have ever had. The second session includes a mix of French art glass, ivory chess sets, models of the Napoleon monument from Place Vendôme, replicas in marble of Roman ruins, clocks, lighting, selected furniture, arresting bronzes and classical figures in marble, including a white marble nude attributed to P.C. Emilio Fiaschi entrusted to us by the Art Gallery of Ontario. A selection of paintings also from the AGO is an exciting highlight of our International Art offerings, featuring works by 19th Century European masters such as Bernardus Johannes Blommers’ “Building Sandcastles”. Highlights of the sculpture category include “Hanako” a remarkable bust by Auguste Rodin, and Sir Jacob Epstein’s massive bronze, “Deirdre in a Slip”. A collection of Native North American portrait studies, related to McKenney and Hall’s monumental project “Indian Tribes of North America” are of interest for their historical importance and highly skilled rendering of their subjects. Internationally renowned artists Alex Katz and Henri Hayden are amongst the stellar examples of modern and contemporary works. Waddington’s Decorative Arts and International Art departments look forward to seeing you at our preview and auctions! — Bill Kime Senior Specialist, Decorative Arts

Jewellery, Watches and Numismatics

Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects

Waddington's has conducted auctions of Fine Jewellery and Numismatics for close to three decades. Highly respected expertise and in-depth knowledge of both domestic and international markets are the anchors of the ongoing success and popularity of our auctions.

Waddington’s launched its newest division, Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects in March 2012 with a vision and mandate to create a secondary market for contemporary Canadian art.

Our auctions are composed of a wide spectrum of contemporary and period jewellery featuring examples by some of the most desired names in jewellery including Tiffany, Cartier, Fabergé, Jensen, Yurman and Van Cleef & Arpels. Also featured in our auctions are fine wrist and pocket watches, designer fashion jewellery and all forms of numismatics including coins, tokens, banknotes and ancients.

Donald McLean Senior Specialist, Jewellery, Watches and Numismatics

Concrete Contemporary Auctions merges the worlds of traditional auction and the retail gallery, where our relationships with artists, art dealers, curators and collectors result in exciting new sources of contemporary works. The auctions are tightly focused on Canadian contemporary art since 1980 with an emphasis on midand late-career artists with exhibition history in the private and public sphere. An exciting initiative is the introduction of our Pop-Up Gallery series. These shortduration single artist exhibitions offer works by some of Canada’s most accomplished and influential working artists. As well, the groundbreaking Concrete Contemporary Acquisition Fund assists museums and public galleries in the acquisition of works by artists included in the auction. Led by one of Canada’s most plugged-in arts experts, Stephen Ranger, we are committed to exploring new ways to connect, expand and support the contemporary art community.

Inuit Art

“Off the Wall” Art

Waddington’s is internationally recognized as one of the leading authorities in marketing Inuit Art. No other auction house has been as intrinsically linked to the development of a market for this art form. Inuit Art is a proud part of our DNA. From our first landmark auction in 1978 of the William Eccles Collection, Waddington’s has offered thousands of works, set record prices, and expanded the market well beyond Canada’s borders.

Our “Off The Wall” Art online auctions are a unique opportunity to showcase accessible art. Drawing from our International Art, Canadian Art and Inuit Art divisions, “Off The Wall” Art auctions feature paintings, prints and sculpture.

Our legacy of successful Inuit Art auctions, our ability to achieve continually increasing values and our creation of an international market have been key factors in validating Inuit art as a whole and establishing it as an integral part of the Canadian Art scene.

These monthly, online auctions are always an eclectic selection of affordable works – a great way to learn, enjoy art and start building a collection. Working closely with our other divisions, this auction has developed its own diverse and extensive network of clients.

The design for the service was developed under the supervision of Leonard Schaufelberger, head of the Imperial Art Workshops, with Emperor Alexander III personally overseeing the process. Production took twenty years to complete and would culminate in the most expensive porcelain service ever produced by the factory. In 1904, the service for fifty persons was completed and delivered to the court of Alexander’s wife, the Dowager Empress Maria Fedorovna. For the design of the service, the Imperial factory translated the splendid frescoes found in the Raphael Loggia in the Hermitage. These murals were themselves reproductions. In the 1780s, Empress Catherine II (Catherine the Great) ordered the construction of an extension for the Great Hermitage. Its walls and vaults were adorned with copies of the Raphael frescoes of the Vatican loggia, painted by Cristopher Unterberger and his workshop. The rich decorations and basic configurations of the compositions of the Vatican and Saint Petersburg loggias are retained on the service, completely elegant in their simplified imagery.

THE ART GALLERY OF ONTARIO COLLECTION Lots 471 – 476 This auction includes a number of works consigned to us by the Art of Gallery of Ontario (AGO) as part of the Gallery’s strategy to refine and improve the public, community and art historical value of its collection. A carefully guided process, the deaccessioning of these works underwent a rigorous and thorough review conducted by the AGO’s curatorial staff, executive team and board members, in consultation with donors or their legal representatives. The AGO recognizes that deaccessioning is an important aspect of a collection’s care. As museums and public galleries carry out their missions, they seek to refine and elevate the quality and relevance of their collections.

In addition, because the AGO cares for its collections according to the highest standards, its resources should therefore only be devoted to works of art that serve its mission. This occasionally demands that works leave the collections. The Art Gallery of Ontario’s 2013 Deaccessioning Policy follows those guidelines agreed upon by the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD), as well as the standards of the Canadian Museums Association, the American Association of Museums and the Association of Art Museum Curators. Waddington’s is pleased to assist the AGO in benefit of future art purchases.

478 AFTER ALEXANDER CABANEL (1823 1889), FRENCH MICHAELANGELO IN HIS STUDIO, VISITED BY POPE JULIUS II Oil on canvas; bears initial “C” lower left. A late 19th Century copy. 31” x 52.5” — 78.7 x 133.4 cm. Provenance: Purchased from a Collection, London, United Kingdom in 1962 as recorded on the typed label verso; Robert Deveau Galleries, (Deveau Auctioneers, Toronto); From whom purchased by the late father of the present Private Collection, Toronto in the 1980s. Exhibited: The original painting, now untraced, was exhibited in the Salon, 1857, as “Michelangelo in His Studio Visited by Pope Julius II”

Note: Two sales of paintings of this title by Cabanel were sold at auction: one at Sotheby & Co., London, 29 April, 1931, lot 60 (being smaller 23” x 38”) and another canvas sold at Hotel Drouot, Paris, Sale No. 10, on 10 November, 1943, lot 65 measuring 29 x 48 cm. with both sales differing in size. It is likely that this copy was executed from the much smaller print, handcoloured with gouache and gum arabic executed by Pierre Castan, now in the Musee Goupil in Bordeaux, measuring 17” x 29 3/8” and published by Adolphe Goupil, the art dealer and publisher that commissioned the original lost canvas. Cabanel turned from religious subjects to literary and historical themes in the late 1850s. In 1857, he exhibited three works in the Salon including the original canvas of this work. The art dealer and publisher Adolphe Goupil commissioned the original painting with the goal of publishing a series of prints devoted to the lives of the great masters. Cabanel paid tribute to Michelangelo, whose work so moved him in Rome and whom he called “my sublime master.” Cabanel represented Michelangelo seated in thought, mallet and chisel in hand, contemplating his unfinished sculpture of Moses. Around him are other sculptures in various states of finish and an imaginary painted grisaille study for a group of angels in The Last Judgment. The Pope and several cardinals, greeted by a bowing servant, are approaching through a door on the right.

Literature: The two sales of other paintings with this title are cited in E. Benezit, “Dictionnaire Des Peintres, Sculpteurs; Dessinateurs et Graveurs”, Vol. 2, p. 433, 1976 edition as “Michel-Ange dans son atelier“ $4,000—6,000

For further reading about the historic Leitz family see Knut Kuhn-Leitz’s book: “Ernst Leitz Wegbereiter Der Leica” Note: Otto Pankok was a German painter, printmaker and sculptor born in Mulheim on the Ruhr who began his formal art training in 1912 at the Art Academies in Dusseldorf and Weimar. From 1914-1917, he was a soldier in France in WWI. Returning to Düsseldorf in 1919, he was a founder of the “Junge Rheinland” (Young Rhineland) group with Otto Dix, Gert Heinrich Wollheim, Adolf Uzarski, and others. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Pankok was declared a degenerate artist. Subsequently, 56 of his pictures were seized from museums, some of which were included in the infamous exhibition Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art), mounted by the Nazis in Munich in 1937. Ernst Leitz II, the son of Ludwig Leitz, was a Protestant patriarch who headed the closely held firm Leitz, later known as Leica Camera, Germany. As the Holocaust loomed across Europe, he acted in such a way as to earn the title “the photography industry’s Schindler”. To help his Jewish workers and colleagues, Leitz quietly established what has become known among historians of the Holocaust as “the Leica Freedom Train” a covert means of allowing Jews to leave Germany in the guise of Leitz employees being assigned overseas. It is now the subject of a book, “The Greatest Invention of the Leitz family: The Leica Freedom Train” (pub. American Photographic Historical Society, 2002).

Decorative Arts and International Fine Art Auction – Tuesday 9 December 2014 at 7:00 pm and Wednesday 10 December 2014 at 7:00 pm

Conditions Of Sale

1. All lots are sold “AS IS”. Any description issued by the auctioneer of an article to be sold is subject to variation to be posted or announced verbally in the auction room prior to the time of sale. While the auctioneer has endeavoured not to mislead in the description issued, and the utmost care is taken to ensure the correct cataloguing of each item, such descriptions are purely statements of opinion and are not intended to constitute a representation to the prospective purchasers and no warranty of the correctness of such description is made. An opportunity for inspection of each article is offered prior to the time of sale. No sale will be set aside on account of lack of correspondence of the article with its description or its reproduction, if any, whether colour or black & white. Some lots are of an age and/or nature which preclude their being in pristine condition and some catalogue descriptions make reference to damage and/or restoration. The lack of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference to certain defects imply the absence of others. Frames on artwork are not included as part of purchase or condition. It is the responsibility of prospective purchasers to inspect or have inspected each lot upon which they wish to bid, relying upon their own advisers, and to bid accordingly. 2. Each lot sold is subject to a premium of 20% of the successful bid price of each lot up to and including $50,000 and 15% on any amount in excess of $50,000 as part of the purchase price.

sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. 5. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. 6. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. The auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid, on behalf of the consignor as agreed between them. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. 7. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer’s decision in all cases shall be final.

3. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay Harmonized Sales Tax on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of country. Items shipped out of Ontario, the buyer is required to pay taxes as per the tax status of that province, whether it HST or GST (Goods and Services Tax).

8. Immediately after the purchase of a lot, the buyer shall pay or undertake to the satisfaction of the auctioneer with respect to payment of the whole or any part of the purchase price requested by the auctioneer, failing which the auctioneer in his sole discretion may cancel the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale.

4. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from

9. The buyer shall pay for all lots within 48 hours from the date of

The buyer shall not become the owner of the lot until paid for in full. Items must be removed within 10 days from the date of sale , after which storage charges may be incurred. 10. Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or at a public warehouse at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away. 11. Notwithstanding condition no. 1, if the buyer, prior to removal of a lot, makes arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for the inspection of such lot by a fully qualified person acceptable to the auctioneer to determine the genuineness or authenticity of the lot, to be carried out promptly following the sale of the lot, and if, but only if, within a period of 14 days following the sale a written opinion of such person is presented to the auctioneer to the effect that the lot is not genuine or authentic, accompanied by a written request by the buyer for rescission of the sale, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the sale price refunded to the buyer. 12. Payment for purchases must be by cash, INTERAC direct debit (Cdn clients in person only), certified cheque (U.S. & Overseas not applicable), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), and VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000). It is the responsibility of the buyer to make all arrangements for insuring, packing and removing the property purchased and any assistance by the auctioneer or his servants, agents or contractors, in packing or removal shall be rendered as a courtesy and without any liability to them. 15. The auctioneer acts solely as agent for the consignor and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles consigned for sale. Without limitation, the buyer understands that any item bought may be affected by the provisions of the Cultural Property Export Act (Canada). 16. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse admission to the sale or to refuse to recognize any or all bids from any particular person or persons at any auction.

13. In the event of failure to pay for or remove articles within the aforementioned time limit, the auctioneer, without limitation of the rights of the consignor and the auctioneer against the buyer, may resell any of the articles
