Condition of Lots: All of the items are to be considered, unless otherwise noted in the description, in good condition. The definition of “good” when used in reference to condition, describes an object as having had no major damage or repair but as with the nature of the material, may show minor surface wear, discolouration etc., which indicates the acceptable wear that the piece may acquire with age. If you are particular about minor flaws, you should examine the pieces in person or have our staff answer any questions before bidding. Sizes are approximate. Japanese Ceramics from the Collection of Sir Cornelius Van Horne (lots 28-30) Sir William Cornelius Van Horne (1843-1915), president of Canadian Pacific Railway and Honourary Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.C), was an avid art collector and amassed one of Montreal’s most significant pre-war collections which also included Asian works of art. Van Horne had a particular fondness for Japanese porcelain and kept meticulous records, assigning specific inventory numbers to items in his collection. Following his death, most of Van Horne’s Asian pottery was bequeathed to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Years later, after the passing of his wife Lady van Horne, a portion of the collection was donated to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.

53 Grey Schist Carving of Indra, Nepal, 17th to 19th Century Expertly rendered and carved in high relief with remnants of polychrome throughout, the King of the Gods surrounded by a mandorla and flanked by cascading ribbons and a double vajra resting on top of a lotus flower, the twisting figure with a contemplative and smiling expression, his full lips in a slightly upturned position and his large eyes framed by dramatically arched eyebrows, all adorned by a tall crown, earrings, a necklace and an assortment of jewelry, the deity posed in a leaning position with his arm resting on his left leg and perched on the recumbent elephant Airavata with its head turned to one side, the entire scene raised on a lotus base. Affixed to stand, carving height 10.8” — 27.5 cm. 63 Large Gilt Bronze Seated Buddha, Sino-Tibetan, 17th/18th Century Heavily cast and well patinated throughout, the rounded face with meditative expression and downcast eyes, a broad nose, and full lips framed by a pair of elongated and fleshy ears with tight whorls of hair and an elaborate top knot, the figure dressed in decorated robes cascading away from the body seated in a cross legged position with the soles of his feet upturned, the whole raised on a double lotus plinth performing the vitarka and jnana mudras, height 11.9” — 30.3 cm. 105 Jichimu Painting Table, 17th Century The flat rectangular top with a floating panel lacquered along the underside secured by a plain straight apron beneath with cloud-form cusped spandrels and supported on four splay footed legs, each of thick rectangular section, and joined together by an ornamental panel carved with a swirling-form opening along the centre, 32.5” x 48.4” x 28” — 82.5 x 123 x 71 cm. Est. $20,000/25,000 Provenance: Purchased in Hong Kong during the 1960’s. Note: Highly favoured by elite members of the late Ming dynasty, the standard painting table was extremely popular and could be constructed from a variety of different woods ranging from jichimu, huanghuali and burlwood to more common materials such as elm and pine. Characterized by its simple and elegant form, this present example of the Ming painting table features typical joinery of the period and is distinguished by a flat top, smooth and undecorated apron, short spandrels, recessed legs, and double stretchers. The underside of the inset flat top panel has been lacquered, which is unusual for hardwood furniture especially that constructed of jichimu, one of the preferred types of wood. Additionally, the overall size and proportion of the current example is rare because while it maintains a significant width, the length has been truncated and measures less than 50 inches across. For a table similar in size but with a larger width, refer to a huanghuali example found in Beyond the Screen: Chinese Furniture of the 16th and 17th Centuries (Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, 1996), catalogue item 17, p. 125

Note: Yang Shihui was born into a craft family in Beijing in 1911. Combining together the rigorous guidance of his teachers with a strong personal sense of dedication, Yang gained a proficient command of traditional carving techniques and was able to launch his career early. Yang blazed new trails through the development of innovative methods, which included the application of the dentist’s drill to ivory carving. By gathering together rich practical experiences, he established the Yang School style. In 1942, Yang created his masterpiece, Grasshopper and Cabbage, which abounds with life, and caused a stir in ivory-carving circles. His works are famous for their delicate touch, smooth lines, vivid images, and authenticity. This pair of ivory panels is a perfect example of his excellent technique and style. Both of the panels are engraved with Qianlong Yihai (1755), Banxiang, one of court workshops during Qianlong period and the artist signature. Yang was often recognized for his works and won accolades from Chairman Mao for his artistic contributions. In January 1956, Yang met state and party leaders including Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai and Dong Biwu. As a highly regarded artist, some of his works were presented as diplomatic gifts to foreign dignitaries, such as his Longevity Hill, which was given to the president of the Democratic Republic of Germany in 1952.

173 Blue and White Table Top Snuff Bottle, 19th Century Of rouleau-form with gently sloping shoulders and base, finely painted with a continuous scene of warriors on horseback approaching the gates of the western city, height 4.9” — 12.5 cm. Est. $1,000/1,500 Note: The illustrated scene represents a fictional event from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms involving one of the most revered strategists of the time, chancellor of the Shu Han state, Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi, leader of the Wei army from the rival state Wei. During the first Northern Expansion, Zhuge Liang’s unsuccessful efforts to invade Chang’an left him vulnerable to attack by advancing armies. However, using reverse psychology and the “empty fort strategy,” one of 32 stratagems outlined in an early essay on politics, war, and civil interaction, Zhuge Liang was able to thwart the Wei army’s attempts. In the scene depicted on the snuff bottle, Zhuge Liang is prominently seated atop the open gates of the western city playing the guqin as the Wei army, led by Sima Yi approaches. Creating the illusion that Zhuge Liang was calm and prepared to fight, the seemingly brazen invitation to battle triggered fears of ambush and Sima Yi, along with the whole Wei army retreated. Although fictionalized, this story is one of the best-known literary examples demonstrating the “empty fort strategy”.

197 Rare Famille Rose Turquoise Ground Vase, Jiaqing Period (1796-1820) The well-potted vase with a tall funnel neck flanked by a pair of stylized bat handles and rising towards an everted gilt rim decorated with a ruyi-head border below, the whole exterior with finely painted and continuous decoration comprised of lotus sprays and emanating vines, the lower portion of the bulbform body with the flowers arranged in the shape of a medallion with long tendril vines joining together and surrounded by blue sinuous dragons, the neck also with dripping jewel pendants, all completed with fine gilt detailing throughout and against a pale turquoise ground, height 13” — 33 cm. 211 Rare Blue and White ‘Ox Herder’ Brushpot, Transitional Period, 17th Century The cylindrical body rising towards a slightly waisted and flaring rim with an incised floral border below, a similar band of incised waves decorate the base and both borders frame a continuous landscape scene including a young boy riding a bull with arms out stretched holding a branch with a small song bird perched near the tip, a rocky mountain emerges from between the swirling clouds in the background with the whole landscape surrounded by a variety of foliage, all completed in underglaze blue, the smooth base unglazed, height 7.9” — 20 cm., diameter 4.2” — 10.7 cm. Est. $12,000/15,000 Provenance: The Estate of Dr. David Varadi, Toronto. Acquired from Sydney L. Moss Ltd., London, September 3,1974. Note: Well painted and a fine example of the period, the pastoral scene illustrated on this brush pot represents the theme of spring, or more specifically Li’chun, “the coming of spring,” a farmers’ holiday. The ox, a traditional symbol of the season, is depicted in its typical form as strong and sturdy. Meanwhile, the young boy is rendered in the form of an ox-driver holding a willow branch, which also serves as a whip. This pairing of the ox and young ox-driver helps to recall the ritual process of “beating the spring ox,” where clay models of an ox were hit with sticks, most likely willow branches, to help stimulate the revival of spring.

214 Extremely Rare Famille Verte Bowl, Kangxi Mark and Period (1664-1722) The shallow sides rising towards a smooth wide rim, all supported on a hidden foot ring and decorated with a song bird perched on a branch of flora with the design continuing along the interior, diameter 5.3” — 13.5 cm. Est. $20,000/30,000 Provenance: The Estate of Doris McCordick (1912-1977) of St. Catherines, ON, thence by descent within the family. The bowl was a gift from her brother-in-law Paul Grigaut (1905-1969) while he was chief curator of the Detroit Art Institute from 1955-1963. Paul Grigaut was an internationally renowned decorative arts and ceramics specialist who studied and taught at many institutions including the University of Paris, University of Chicago, Fogg Museum of Harvard, and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. His research, correspondences, photographs, slides and lecture notes are all stored at the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan. Note: Elegantly rendered with the sensitivity and style traditionally associated with Chinese paintings on silk or paper, the bowl depicts a solitary bird, possibly in the form of a waxwing, perched on a branch of red berries. Designs of Kangxi period bowls featuring a single bird are extremely rare with the most recent example sold in Sotheby’s Hong Kong ‘The Meiyintang Collection’, April 7 2011, lot 3. Additionally, the continuous design of twisting branches on both the interior and exterior, as seen on the present bowl, is a highly unusual feature. While this type of motif originated in the Kangxi period, it was more commonly found in Yongzheng famille rose examples of bowls and dishes. Compare to a pair of bowls with fruiting sprays and butterflies from the B. Y. Lam Foundation published in Qing Imperial Porcelain (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1995), no. 24. The quality of the famille verte enamels is almost identical to the present bowl, along with the shape, hidden footring, and mark.

Chinese Scroll Paintings from the Estate of KC Tai, Part III (lots 257-269) Born in 1917 in Guandong, the late Kwok-Choi Tai took after his father, a venerated scholar from the late Qing Dynasty, and the third ranked official in Guangzhou province. Mr. Tai graduated from Sun Yatsen University during WWII and majored in Chinese literature and psychology, and taught at the College of Education for the Hong Kong government until he retired in the early 1980’s. The majority of the paintings from his collection was acquired from the 1950’s to 1980’s and features the works of the South Chinese Lingnan School. Previous parts of this collection were sold at Waddington’s in June and December of 2012.
