1 CHÂTEAU CLINET 2009 Pomerol u. 3 x bn. 1 x scuffed label Clinet has been on a hot streak lately and the 2009 appears to be the greatest wine ever made at the estate, surpassing even the late Jean-Michel Arcaute’s monumental 1989. A blend of 85% Merlot and tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc (12%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%), this big Pomerol boasts an opaque, moonless night inky/ blue/purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of blueberry pie, incense, truffles, black raspberries, licorice and wood smoke. Viscous and multi-dimensional with silky, sweet tannin, massive fruit concentration and full-bodied power, there are nearly 4,000 cases of this thick, juicy, perfect Clinet. It should drink well in 3-5 years and keep for 25-30. December 2011 WA 100 3 bts.

per lot $1,000 - $1,200

2 CHÂTEAU CLINET 2008 (3) Pomerol u. 3 x bn. 3 x scuffed labels CHÂTEAU CLINET 2010 (3) Pomerol u. 3 x bn. The blend is largely dominated by 85% Merlot, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc also included. Inky/purple-colored, the wine has an exceptionally full-bodied, layered, moderately tannic mouthfeel and impressive power. Loads of melted chocolate/fudge and black fruits galore along with some coffee bean, mocha, as well as some background oak are all present in this big, formidably endowed, masculine style of Pomerol that will take longer to shed its tannin than the 2009. I would give this wine 5-6 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 30+ years. February 2013 WS 95 WA 96+ 6 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,000

6 CHÂTEAU LE GAY 2011 (3) Pomerol The 2011 Le Gay exhibits a deep ruby/ blue/purple color in addition to a sumptuous nose of spring flowers, blueberries and raspberries, deep, full-bodied, slightly masculine flavors, and sensational purity, richness and texture. It is another impressive 2011 Pomerol that has the guts, stuffing and structure to age for 1520 years. April 2014 WA 94 CHÂTEAU LE GAY 2015 (3) Pomerol WA 93 6 bts.

19 CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET 2005 Pauillac. 5ième Cru Classé The palate is medium-bodied, but dense and structured—certainly a more masculine Pontet-Canet built for long-term ageing. Yet it retains marvelous freshness and vitality all the way through to the pencil-lead, quite saline finish. I suspect that the 2009 Pontet-Canet is more approachable than the 2005, so heeding Robert Parker’s sage advice, afford this up to ten years in your cellar and then reap the rewards of patience. Tasted February 2016. Drink Date 2025-2050 WS 96 WA 97 5 bts.

per lot $1,000 - $1,200

21 CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET 2009 Pauillac. 5ième Cru Classé 2 x scuffed labels An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. Maturity: 2025-2075 WA 100 3 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,000

22 LES FORTS DE LATOUR 2004 (3) Pauillac 2 x marked labels DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER 2007 (3) Pessac-Léognan. Grand Cru Classé u. 2 x bn. 6 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,000

23 CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2002 Margaux. 1er Cru Classé 3 x scraped labels. 1 x damaged label Performing better from bottle than at any time in cask (which of course is the objective of great winemaking, isn’t it?), this wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color in a style somewhat reminiscent of the 1988 but with more power, concentration, and volume. It has a beautifully elegant nose of black fruits intermixed with truffle, flower, and oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, dense, with wonderful precision, freshness, and a long, full-bodied finish with impressive levels of concentration. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. WS 92 WA 93 3 bts.

per lot $1,800 - $2,000

24 CHÂTEAU BOYD-CANTENAC 2005 (OWC) Margaux. 3ième Cru Classé 12 bts.

per lot $1,200 - $1,400

25 CHÂTEAU PALMER 2002 Margaux. 3ième Cru Classé u. 3. x bn. 2 x scraped labels A successful wine for the vintage, this blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot boasts complex notes of menthol, black currants, plums, licorice, and a hint of cappuccino in its stunning aromatics. Dense, medium to full-bodied, with high levels of tannin in a big, full-bodied style (much in the spirit of such classic Bordeaux vintages as 1966, 1986, and 1996), this wine possesses superb purity and serious length, but should be purchased only by those with considerable patience and a good, cold cellar, since it will need plenty of time. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. April 2005 WA 94 3 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,000

26 CHÂTEAU RAUZAN-SÉGLA 2009 (3) Margaux. 2ième Cru Classé (Label designed by Karl Lagerfeld) Gorgeous nose of raspberries and blueberries. Hints of chocolate and oak. Full bodied, but compacted and very racy. Lovely fruit with milk chocolate, but the texture of tannins is so beautiful. This is the best Rauzan ever made – except perhaps the great pre-phylloxera bottles of the 1800s. Try in 2019. November 2011 jamessuckling.com JS 97 PAVILLON ROUGE DU CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 1998 (2) Margaux 5 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,000

27 CHÂTEAU MALESCOT ST. EXUPÉRY 2009 Margaux. 3ième Cru Classé 1 x scuffed label An inky/purple color is followed by notes of Asian plum sauce, forest floor, creme de cassis, black raspberries and a floral component that is unusual for a Margaux. A wine of exceptional intensity and purity with a full-bodied, sumptuous texture, lots of fresh vibrancy and excellent definition, this beautiful 2009 exhibits high but sweet tannin. It is more sexy than the 2005 was at a similar age, although their level of extract and concentration is relatively equal. Something about the 2009 reminds me of a Margaux version of St.-Julien’s Leoville Poyferre ... if that makes any sense. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040. December 2011 WA 96 6 bts.

per lot $700 - $900

EXUPÉRY 2005 (3) Margaux. 3ième Cru Classé u. 2 x bn. 1 x scuffed label A beautiful wine, once again, from this property that has been on a superb qualitative roll for several decades. Dense ruby/purple with notes of graphite, background oak, youthful crème de cassis and blackberry fruit as well as a floral underpinning, it is medium to full-bodied, textured, rich and impressive. Still in a somewhat adolescent stage, it should hit full maturity in another 2-3 years and last at least two decades. June 2015 Drink: 2017-2037 WA 96 8 bts.

39 CHÂTEAU LE DOME 2010 Saint-Émilion. Grand Cru Classé 3 x scraped labels A full-bodied wine, but ethereal in its elegance and finesse, the wine has a strikingly provocative bouquet of camphor, blueberry jam, violets, new saddle leather, white chocolate and spice. Extremely full-bodied, but again, not showing any weighty fatigue or any type of aggressiveness, this wine has extraordinary purity and richness as well as a blockbuster finish of close to a minute, yet is so flawless, seamless and compelling, it’s hard to believe the wine is this concentrated and rich. It will be interesting to see how it evolves, but it certainly can be drunk in 3-4 years and, I’m sure, cellared for as long as 25-35 years from now. February 2013 WA 100 3 bts.

41 CLOS FOURTET 2010 Saint-Émilion. Premier Grand Cru Classé B u. 3 x bn. 3 x scuffed labels The wine has an opaque blue/black color and abundant notes of forest floor, spring flowers, black raspberry and blueberry liqueur in the aromatics along with hints of espresso and white chocolate. The wine is dense, full, rich, unctuously textured and very full-bodied, with its extravagant glycerin, fruit and extract covering the wine’s somewhat tannic structure. This is a bigger, more restrained and structured wine than the outrageously flamboyant and prodigious 2009. Give it 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 30-40 years. A good value among over-achieving St.-Emilion estates is La Fleur Cardinale’s 2009. Composed of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, some of the abrasive tannins noticeable early on in this big wine (14.5% alcohol) are now sweeter and better integrated. Made from tiny yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, this is a concentrated, rich effort revealing lots of black cherry and black currant fruit as well as a fragrant, firm, full-bodied personality. 71 CHÂTEAU TROPLONG MONDOT 2010 Saint-Émilion. Premier Grand Cru Classé B u. 3 x bn. 1 x scuffed labe Inky, bluish/black/purple, with notes of spring flowers, licorice, camphor, graphite, and a boatload of blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry fruit, this is a powerful, full-bodied Troplong Mondot. All the building components of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol are judiciously and impressively integrated. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc made by Christine Valette and her husband Xavier Pariente with the consultancy help of Michel Rolland. Forget this for 5-7 years and drink it over the following three decades. February 2013 Drink: 2018-2048 WA 99 3 bts.

Deep garnet colored, it is still a little closed and youthfully shy. With coaxing, the nose is just beginning to offer glimpses at vivacious kirsch, red roses, violets, licorice and mocha scents over a crème de cassis, blackberry pie and chocolate-covered cherry core with wafts of chargrill, mossy bark and truffles. Full-bodied, concentrated and wonderfully complex in the mouth, the palate is just beginning to reveal the true potential of this wine, with tightly wound layers of perfumed black fruits and earthy notions bound by a rock-solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and finishing with epic persistence. A superstar of the vintage, the wine has notes of pen ink and creme de cassis, good acidity, sweet, subtle oak, and massive extraction and concentration. I thought it was one of the most backward wines of the vintage two years ago, and nothing has changed in the ensuing upbringing of the wine in cask except that the wine now seems even richer, denser and fuller than I previously thought. The beautiful purity, symmetry, and huge finish of nearly a minute make this one of the all-time great classics from Leoville Barton. Anticipated maturity: 2028-2065+. This intense, voluptuously textured, full-bodied St.-Julien possesses low acidity and ripe tannin. Still fresh and exuberant, it is just entering its plateau of full maturity where it should remain for 10-15+ years. August 2014 Drink: 20142029 WA 96 6 bts.

90 CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ 2009 Saint-Julien. 2ième Cru Classé u. 3 x bn. One of the more flamboyant and sumptuous wines of the vintage, this inky/ purple-colored St.-Julien reveals thrilling levels of opulence, richness and aromatic pleasures. A soaring bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, graphite and spring flowers is followed by a super-concentrated wine with silky tannins, stunning amounts of glycerin, a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeel and nearly 14% natural alcohol. Displaying fabulous definition for such a big, plump, massive, concentrated effort, I suspect the tannin levels are high even though they are largely concealed by lavish amounts of fruit, glycerin and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040. WA 100 3 bts.

91 CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ 2010 Saint-Julien. 2ième Cru Classé 1 x scraped label The wine out distances both Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton, but all three of them are compelling efforts. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish. This spectacular effort from Poyferre that should drink well for 30+ years. February 2013 WA 98+ 3 bts.

92 CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ 2011 (3) Saint-Julien. 2ième Cru Classé 1 x scuffed label This property, which has been on a qualitative tear over the last generation, has produced one of the most successful wines of 2011. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it is broad, rich, medium to full-bodied and dense. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as lots of concentration, silky tannins, and a bigger, richer mouthfeel than any of its St.-Julien peers. The result is one of the stars of the vintage. 93 CHÂTEAU SAINT-PIERRE 2009 (3) Saint-Julien The all-time greatest wine I have ever tasted from Saint-Pierre, this estate, the smallest of the grand cru classes of St.-Julien, has an opaque purple color and a spectacular nose of subtle charcoal, creme de cassis, blackberry, and incense. Full-bodied, with striking intensity and flamboyantly rich, exuberant flavors bursting with extract, the St. Pierre has no hard edges, but rather massive, incredibly well-endowed blockbuster style, which should prove to be monumental. This is a 30- to 40-year wine. Bravo! 126 DOMAINE ARMAND ROUSSEAU PÈRE ET FILS CHAMBERTIN-CLOS DE BÈZE 2015 Côte de Nuits. Grand Cru The 2015 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is spectacular, wafting from the glass with a dramatic bouquet of sweet grilled meat, red and black fruit, candied peel and rich soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and powerful, with a lavishly gourmand attack that evokes the 2009 rendition, but this quickly segues into the mid-palate of an altogether more tautly structural, serious wine, its considerable dimension and concentration underwritten by racy acids. The finish is long and firm. This is a monumental Clos de Bèze built for the long haul. April 2018 No 3152 WA 97 1 bt.

131 SAXUM VINEYARDS JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2005 (1) Paso Robles It gives up incredible aromas of sweet blackcurrants, blackberry liqueur, spiced meats, licorice and roasted meats that are just now starting to show hints of evolution. Sweetly fruited and with full-bodied richness, this beauty is hard to resist and has fabulous concentration, sweet tannin and a seamless finish. It will have another decade of longevity, yet there is no harm in drinking it now. June 2014 WA 97 SAXUM VINEYARDS JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2006 (1) Paso Robles wrinkled label An unfined/unfiltered blend of 45% Syrah, 38% Grenache, and 17% Mourvedre, aged 32 months in a combination of wood vessels, the prodigious 2006 James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red exhibits beautiful sweet creme de cassis, black raspberry, blackberry, truffle, smoke, and herb notes. This spicy, rich, full-bodied effort should drink beautifully for a decade. August 2009 WA 95 SAXUM VINEYARDS JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2007 (1) Paso Robles u. 1 cm. scuffed label It would be an amazing wine to insert in a tasting of the most profound 2007 Chateauneuf du Papes. As with many prodigious wines, the extraordinary freshness, purity, equilibrium, and singularity of this effort is breathtaking. Its dense purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary, incredibly pure, all enveloping, intense, sweet nose of black raspberries, kirsch, spring flowers, spice box, and pepper. Full-bodied with not a hard edge to be found, it is stunningly concentrated with unreal purity, a voluptuous texture, and remarkable freshness for a wine of such power, depth, and concentration. This 2007 will be approachable young, although I would not be surprised to see it close down given the relatively elevated proportion of Mourvedre, and it should drink well for 12-15 years. August 2009 WA 100 3 bts.

per lot $500 - $700

132 SAXUM VINEYARDS JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2008 (1) Paso Robles scraped label With strong minerality from the limestone soil, this exuberant, fleshy, full-bodied wine is already drinking well. (I believe it was actually bottled just a day or two before my visit, which makes its performance that much more remarkable.) Dense purple, with sweet notes of barbecue smoke and meats as well as roasted herbs, extravagant black cherry, black currant, and blackberry fruit are all present in this wine, but there is plenty of underlying structure that comes from both the minerality and the Mourvedre component. Pure, full-bodied, but again, impressively elegant and nuanced, this is a tour de force and another prodigious example of this extraordinary vineyard site. August 2010 WA 98 SAXUM VINEYARDS JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2009 (2) Paso Robles Simply put, the 2009 James Berry Vineyard is one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted from California, or anywhere for that matter. Bright, floral aromatics lead to expressive red fruit in this impossibly elegant, dazzling wine. A melange of rose petals, mint and licorice follows as the James Berry shows off its breathtaking clarity and finesse. Fine-grained, chalky tannins frame the exceptional finish. In 2009 the James Berry Vineyard is 57% Grenache, 31% Mourvedre and 12% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 20142021. August 2011 WA 98 SAXUM VINEYARDS JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2010 (2) Paso Robles u. 1 x 1 cm. As it approaches its eighth birthday, the 2010 James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red is drinking beautifully, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of smoky cassis, incense, burnt sage and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with an ample core of ripe fruit, fine-grained and resolved tannins and a long, intense finish. May 2018 WA 98 5 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,100

133 SAXUM VINEYARDS JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2011 (2) Paso Robles The 2011 James Berry Vineyard is a blend of 69% Grenache, 13% Mourvedre, 13% Syrah, 2% Counoise, and a splash of Roussanne, that was aged in a combination of concrete (Grenache) and larger oak puncheons. 170 CHÂTEAU COS D’ESTOURNEL 1996 Saint-Estèphe. 2ième Cru Classé Tasted at the château, the 1996 Cos d’Estournel was aged in 65% new oak (unlike the 1995 which was 100%) and is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. It has a straight down the line, intense and focused, graphite and melted tar bouquet. It is almost Pauillac in style, no surprise given its proximity. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, finer tannin than the 1986 Cos d’Estournel tasted alongside, but sharing those same leitmotifs of black pepper and sea salt. I like the nonchalance of this Cos d’Estournel. At 20 years it is not an ostentatious wine, not determined to go out and impress, but its nuance, stylishness and classicism grow on you. Its virtues seem to register only after you swallow the wine and find yourself tempted back for more. Excellent. Tasted July 2016. WA 94 2 bts.

190 TENUTA DELL’ORNELLAIA MASSETO TOSCANA IGT 2005 Tuscany u. ts. The 2005 Masseto (Merlot) is simply gorgeous. A wine of extraordinary class and personality, it remains very primary in its dark fruit, licorice, cassis and toasted oak. It offers notable concentration and well-integrated tannins, all of which convey an impression of awesome harmony, finesse and balance. The tricky growing season seems to have been less of an issue for the Merlot, particularly in the old-vine Masseto Centrale vineyard. The 2005 Masseto has been superb every time I have tasted it thus far. As is often the case, the wine requires at least a few years of bottle age before it becomes approachable. 198 CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 2005 Pauillac. 1er Cru Classé scuffed label There are layers and layers of black fruit intermingling with graphite and black pepper, and it wisely reins everything in on the finish that is more classic in style and in keeping with the vintage. If you are fortunate enough to have this wine in your cellar, even though those tannins are starting to be abraded by time, afford it another five or six years. Tasted August 2016. 199 CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2001 Margaux. 1er Cru Classé u. bn. stained label. scuffed capsule The 2001 Chateau Margaux continues to evolve in impressive fashion. The nose feels sensual, veering towards red rather than black fruit, with disarming purity and perhaps showing more floral/violet character than the 1999. Both display tremendous precision and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, edgy and tensile with crisp acidity, so fresh and vital in the mouth. Tasted next to the 1996 Château Margaux, it is clear to see that the 2001 is several steps behind, yet the way it fans out with such confidence and brio on the finish assures that this has a prosperous future. 200 CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2005 Margaux. 1er Cru Classé The first-growth 2005 Château Margaux (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot), a lavish fragrance of blackcurrants, velvety new saddle leather, spring flowers and spice soars from the glass. The wood is already totally concealed beneath the cascade of fruit in this medium to full-bodied, pure and majestic wine. This concentrated, dense, but nevertheless strikingly elegant, multi-layered wine has a finish of 45+ seconds. It builds incrementally to a crescendo and finale. This is a stunner that can be approached already, but promises to be better in another 5-10 years and last at least 25 or more years. WS 97 WA 98+ 1 bt.

Medium to full-bodied, the palate is wonderfully bright and crunchy, with bags of fresh black and red berries and a wonderfully plush, finely grained texture, finishing long and fragrant. 214 DOMAINE ARMAND ROUSSEAU GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN CLOS STJACQUES 2017 (OWC) Côte de Nuits. Premier Cru The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is being matured in 80% new oak, and it was the one wine in the cellar that was quite strongly marked by its time in barrel when I tasted it. Behind the prominent framing of cedary oak lurks a pretty bouquet of red and black berry fruit, orange rind, rich soil tones and peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and open-knit with a vanillin-inflected finish. I suspect that the final assemblage will be more integrated than the single barrel, but in its structure and overall profile, this looks to be reminiscent of Rousseau’s 2007 Clos Saint-Jacques. 215 DOMAINE ARMAND ROUSSEAU CHAMBERTIN 2017 Côte de Nuits. Grand Cru The king of the cellar is the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that offers up aromas of sweet cherries, wild berries, raw cocoa, warm spices and candied peel, complemented by ineffable savory nuances and a classy top note of peony. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and vibrant with juicy acids and a deep core of vibrant fruit that largely cloaks its fine structuring tannins. The Clos de Bèze may be richer and heartier, but the Chambertin is finer, longer and more complete. January 2019 No 1492, 1493, 1494 WA (93-95)+ 3 bts.

Grand Cru The 2017 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru bursts from the glass with extroverted aromas of dark, plummy fruits that mingle with notes of chocolate, licorice, sweet oak spice, grilled meats and espresso. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, rich and ample with broad shoulders, a generous core of fruit and more mid-palate amplitude and tannic bite than the Chambertin. Premier Cru The 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères is quite reserved, unfurling with extended aeration to exhibit notes of Anjou pear, crisp white peach and spring flowers, against a subtle background of almond paste. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, elegantly glossy and deceptively open-knit, with juicy acids and a mouthwatering, saline finish. Right now, only the outlines of what this showed during élevage and what it will be in a few more years’ time are apparent, so I would encourage readers to forget any bottles they may own until 2020. Its deep saturated ruby/plum/purple color is accompanied by a tight but promising bouquet of vanilla, cherry liqueur, melted licorice, black currants, and notions of truffles and earth. Rich, full-bodied, and surprisingly thick as well as intense, there is plenty of structure underlying the wealth of fruit and extract. Give it 3-6 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following two decades as it promises to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage, not to mention one of the most concentrated. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and complete, with a beautifully integrated spine of acidity, excellent concentration and a vinous profile, concluding with a long and iodine-inflected finish. There’s a touch more breadth and dimension here than in the white Dom Pérignon P2 of the same vintage, but the two wines share a strong vintage signature this year. 241 MOËT & CHANDON CHAMPAGNE CUVÉE DOM PÉRIGNON ROSÉ 1998 Champagne scraped foil & label The 1998 Dom Perignon Rose is a striking, intensely perfumed wine redolent of sweet candied cherries and spices. This medium-bodied wine possesses gorgeous structure, and ideally another year or two of cellaring is warranted in order for the full range of aromas and flavors to emerge. The Dom Perignon Rose is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, with most of the Pinot coming from the south-facing vineyards of Ay. December 2008 WA 94 1 bt.

243 HENRI BONNEAU CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE RÉSERVE CÉLESTINES 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1 x scuffed label The 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins is a sensational effort. Deeper, richer and more concentrated than the Marie Beurrier, it reveals an unusually inky ruby/purple color to go with overflowing notes of kirsch liqueur, roasted meats, crushed flowers, garrigue and just about every other Provençal spice you could name. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered and a blockbuster-styled effort, it should surpass the 2007 and possibly rival the 1990. This is a tour de force in Châteauneuf du Pape! 247 BODEGAS VEGA-SICILIA RIBERA DEL DUERO ÚNICO 2006 Ribera del Duero, Spain u. 2 x wrinkled & scraped labels. I tasted the 2006 Único again, and it’s clearly the best Único produced in the last few years, to which I don’t find much logic, as on paper 2004 and 2005 were better years in Ribera del Duero. However it is, the 2006 is a fantastic modern Vega Sicilia in the making, powerful and clean, still very young and marked by the élevage with a whiff of American oak and a creamy texture in the palate. It should age very well for a very long time. I’d wait to pull the cork, even if it’s drinkable and quite showy already. This is the current vintage in 2018, even if the 2007 and 2008 were released before it and even before the 2005. In 2019 they will release the 2009. 93,993 bottles, 2,552 magnums, 165 double magnums and six imperials were produced. April 2018 Drink: 20202035 WA 98 2 bts.

257 REALM CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON BECKSTOFFER TO KALON 2012 Napa Valley u. 3 x bn. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon emerges from another first-growth vineyard that was acquired by Andy Beckstoffer in 1993, and planted with multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The original vineyard was planted in 1868, but the present one consists of nearly 90 acres. The 2012 reveals incredible complexity and density with notes of Christmas fruitcake, baking spices, licorice, crème de cassis and forest floor. Full-bodied with the vintage’s opulence and drama, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was fashioned from Clones 4 and 337. It should age effortlessly for 25-30 years. October 2014 WA 97+ 3 bts.

264 CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2009 Margaux. 1er Cru Classé 1 x stained label A brilliant offering from the Mentzelopoulos family, once again their gifted manager, Paul Pontallier, has produced an uncommonly concentrated, powerful 2009 Chateau Margaux made from 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As with most Medocs, the alcohol here is actually lower (a modest 13.3%) than most of its siblings. Abundant blueberry, cassis and acacia flower as well as hints of charcoal and forest floor aromas that are almost Burgundian in their complexity are followed by a wine displaying sweet, well-integrated tannins as well as a certain ethereal lightness despite the wine’s overall size. Rich, round, generous and unusually approachable for such a young Margaux, this 2009 should drink well for 30-35+ years. WS 97 WA 99 2 bts.

per lot $1,800 - $2,000

265 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2009 Pauillac. 1er Cru Classé Among the most powerful Lafites ever made (it came in at 13.59% alcohol), the final blend was 82.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot. The selection was incredibly severe with only 45% of the crop being utilized. A tight, but potentially gorgeous nose of graphite, black currants, licorice and camphor is followed by a full-bodied wine revealing the classic elegance, purity and delineated style of Lafite. It is phenomenally concentrated with softer tannins than the 2005, the 2003’s voluptuous, broad, juicy personality, and low acidity. There are several vintages that I thought were a replay of their colossal 1959, most notably 1982 and 2003, but 2009 is also one to keep an eye on. It is still extremely youthful and seems slightly more backward than I would have guessed based on the barrel tastings, but it needs 10-15 years of bottle age, and should last for 50+. Maturity: 2025-2075 WA 100 4 bts.

Downright sexy on the palate, with full-bodied richness and a voluptuous, mouth-filling texture, it nevertheless has ample tannin and concentration, all of which build nicely on the palate. While it will have upward of three decades of longevity, it will be one of the more approachable Hommage A Jacques Perrins in its youth as well. February 2015 Drink: 2017-2036 WA 96 3 bts.

298 TENUTA GUADO AL TASSO (ANTINORI) BOLGHERI MATAROCCHIO 2011 Tuscany u. 3 x bn. I was blown away by the 2011 Matarocchio (100% Cabernet Franc). From 15-year-old vines planted some 60 meters above sea level on the Tuscan coast, this wine is absolutely stunning, delicious and simply unforgettable. Only produced in 2007, 2009 and 2011, this third edition shows towering aromas of sensuous dark fruit, leather and tobacco. If Cabernet Franc is the darling grape of this appellation, Matarocchio is a reason why. The mouthfeel is penetrating and powerful, but seamless and silky smooth at the same time. The tannin management is excellent. This is one to keep in the cellar. October 2014 Drink: 2016-2038 WA 97 3 bts.

299 TELMO RODRGUEZ RIOJA LAS BEATAS 2015 Rioja, Spain 1 x scuffed label This is a powerful vintage with pungent flavors, amazing intensity and great length. It combines power with elegance. There is great detail with floral aromas, nuanced and finessed, a wine that opens up and doesn’t stop changing in the glass. It has the elegance and freshness of the 2013, but it feels one step up in depth and complexity. The level of detail, precision and elegance here is really outstanding. This is truly a world-class wine. Did they make magnums? 1,512 bottles were produced in 2015. This will be released around May 2018, perhaps earlier. Beware, it might fly! 318 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2001 Pauillac. 1er Cru Classé The 2001 Lafite Rothschild’s deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur-like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. This blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot is a classic example of Lafite. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recent Lafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. The classy 2001 should be at its finest between 20072020. WA 94 2 bts.

329 CASANOVA DI NERI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO TENUTA NUOVA 2010 Tuscany The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is a protagonist of the vintage. The fruit is deep and dark with rich levels of extract, intensity and flavor. It goes far beyond your standard cherry and blackberry to include plum cake, spice bread and bacon-wrapped prune. Nothing is obvious or monochromatic about this wine. Everything is nuanced and ethereal. Tenuta Nuova is also distinguished by the linear mineral notes that are characteristic of this single-vineyard site. In 2010, those traits are especially well-defined and pronounced. The tannins reach a level of suppleness that is almost impossible to find in the sometimes prickly and acidic Sangiovese grape. February 2015 WA 100 6 bts.

332 ANTINORI SOLAIA TOSCANA IGT 2004 (OWC) Tuscany The thrilling 2004 Solaia (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc) is clearly one of the highlights of this great vintage. Endowed with massive amounts of concentration as well as structure, it is a big, powerful Solaia that does not sacrifice elegance or balance in its full-bodied personality. Packed with the essence of blackberries, chocolate, tar, smoke, cassis and menthol, this layered beauty exhibits great length and a persistent, warmly alcoholic finish. It has been stunning on the three occasions I have had it so far and is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024. June 2007 WA 96 5 bts.

Burgundy Levels

For wines in bottles with defined shoulders, including Bordeaux, Port, and other wines, the level is measured and catalogued as follows:

For wines in bottles with sloping necks, including Burgundy, German and other wines, the level between the cork and wine is measured and catalogued in centimetres.

BASE NECK: Perfectly good for any age of wine. Outstandingly good for a wine of 10 years in bottle, or longer. BN.

the easing of the cork and evaporation through cork and capsule. Usually no problem. Acceptable for any wine over 20 years old. Exceptional for pre-1950 wines. MID SHOULDER: Probably some weakening of the cork

and some risk. Not abnormal for wines 30 - 40 years of age. Estimates usually take this into account. LOW SHOULDER: Risky and usually only accepted

for sale if wine or label exceptionally rare or interesting. Always offered with low estimate. BOTTOM SHOULDER: Not acceptable for sale unless a

rare sort of bottle. Wine will usually be undrinkable.

The condition and drinkability of Burgundy is less affected by ullage than its equivalent from Bordeaux. A 5 - 7 cm ullage in a 50-year-old Burgundy can be considered normal, indeed good for age; 3.5-4 cm excellent for age; 7 cm rarely a risk. Example: (u. 3x5cm) means 3 bottles ullaged 5 cm.

Special notice: Though every effort is made to describe or measure the levels of older vintages, corks over 20 years old begin to lose their elasticity and levels can change between cataloguing and sale. Old corks have also been known to fail during or after shipment. We therefore repeat that there is always a risk of cork failure with old wines and due allowance must be made for this. Under no circumstances can an adjustment of price or credit be made after delivery except under the terms of the warranty stated in the Conditions of Sale.

Conditions of Sale Fine Wine & Fine Spirits

1. Waddington’s conducts auctions of fine wine and rare spirits as agent for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (the “LCBO”) and all such auctions are authorized by the LCBO. All auction sales shall be deemed to take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 2. All purchasers of alcoholic beverages through an auction must be nineteen (19) years of age or older. Proof of age may be required prior to the transfer of any purchased goods, including, but not limited provision of photo identification. 3. All lots are sold “AS IS”. Any description issued by the auctioneer of an article to be sold is subject to variation to be posted or announced verbally in the auction room prior to the time of sale. While the auctioneer has endeavoured not to mislead in the description issued, and the utmost care is taken to ensure the correct cataloguing of each item, such descriptions are purely statements of opinion and are not intended to constitute a representation to the prospective purchasers and no warranty of the correctness of such description is made. No opportunity of inspection is offered prior to the time of sale. No sale will be set aside on account of lack of correspondence of the article with its description or its reproduction, if any, whether colour or black & white. Some lots are of an age and/or nature which preclude their being in pristine condition and some catalogue descriptions make reference to damage and/or restoration. The lack of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference to certain defects imply the absence of others. 4. Each lot sold is subject to a buyer’s premium of 20% of the successful bid price as part of the purchase price. 5. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay Harmonized Sales Tax on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of country. Items shipped out of Ontario, the buyer is required to

pay taxes as per the tax status of that province, whether it HST or GST (Goods and Services Tax). Purchasers are solely responsible for ensuring that they comply with all laws or regulations in relation to international shipping or the import of alcohol, including, but not limited to the payment of customs charges and duties. 6. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. 7. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid, may not be recognized. 8. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. As previously agreed to as between the auctioneer and the consignor, the auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. 9. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer’s decision in all cases shall be final.

10. The auctioneer will notify the successful buyer that they have won the bid. 11. The buyer shall pay for all lots within 48 hours from the date of the sale, after which a late charge of 2% per month on the total invoice may be incurred or the auctioneer, in his sole discretion, may cancel the sale. The buyer shall not become the owner of the lot until paid for in full. Items must be removed within 30 days from the date of sale, after which storage charges will be incurred at a rate of $4.00 per case per month. 12. Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or affiliated storage facility at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away. 13. Notwithstanding Section 3, if the buyer, prior to removal of a lot, makes arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for the inspection of such lot by a fully qualified person acceptable to the auctioneer to determine the genuineness or authenticity of the lot, to be carried out promptly following the sale of the lot, and if, but only if, within a period of 14 days following the sale a written opinion of such person is presented to the auctioneer to the effect that the lot is not genuine or authentic, accompanied by a written request by the buyer for rescission of the sale, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the sale price refunded to the buyer. 14. Payment for purchases must be by INTERAC direct debit (applicable to Canadian in-person clients only), certified cheque (not applicable to U.S. and international sales), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), and VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000). 15. In the event of failure to pay for or remove articles within the time limit set out in Section 11, the auctioneer, without limitation of the rights of the consignor and the auctioneer against the buyer, may resell any of the articles affected, and in such case the original buyer shall be responsible to the auctioneer and the consignor for: a any deficiency in price between the re-sale amount and the amount to have been paid by the original buyer; b charges in relation to the storage of such articles in accordance with Section 11 until payment and removal by the subsequent buyer; and c the amount of commission which the auctioneer would have earned had payment been made in full by the original buyer.

16. It is the responsibility of the buyer to make all arrangements for insuring, packing and removing the Consigned Goods purchased and any assistance by the auctioneer or his servants, agents or contractors, in packing or removal shall be rendered as a courtesy and without any liability to them. 17. The auctioneer acts solely as agent for the consignor and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles consigned for sale. 18.
