Introducing...

Personal Best was established eleven years ago to proudly celebrate our students’ wonderful and remarkably varied achievements. Nothing’s changed there, as this edition so superbly demonstrates. What these young people do and achieve individually and together as a community continues to amaze and inspire in equal measure. And we now have our third Student Editor! Sophie can more than ably introduce herself and her vision for the future of Personal Best. Her appointment marks a key stage in our magazine’s development, with it now more than ever expressing ‘student voice’. This girl can...

Earlier this year Annabel Chaffey, who we have featured regularly in Personal Best, became World Monobob Champion, winning the first ever FIBT Monobob Women’s Championships. The concluding race of the three-race series took place in the famous Olympia natural ice track at St Moritz and saw Annabel become world number one for her age and achieve a world record while she was at it.

Annabel, the youngest person to have competed in the British Bobsleigh Championships, said: “I can’t believe I won the St Moritz race and then went on to win the series! It doesn’t feel real, and is a massive confidence boost and motivation to work hard ready for next season and the Youth Olympics. I couldn’t have done it without the support I’ve had and the whole experience has just been crazy and very exciting! I’m loving every minute of it!”

Since the last edition of Personal Best, Annabel has also been announced as Berkshire Junior Sports Personality of the Year at Get Berkshire Active’s Inspiration and Participation Awards.

Mr Peaple said: “I’m so proud of Annabel, and all that she has achieved in combining elite sporting performance with equally outstanding academic progress and achievement. No one could be more deserving of the Young Junior Sports Personality Award. She is a fantastic ambassador

and role model for womens’ sport, and already the recipient of my annual ‘Living The Values’ Award last November.”

It was only just over a year ago that Annabel’s stellar performance at try outs secured her a place at Team GB’s Ice Camp and now, sponsored by the Charity SportsAid and Newbury based IT Company Ntegra, Annabel is making herself known in the bobsleigh world with accolades still flooding in as she continues her preparation for the Youth Winter Olympic Games next February. •

Mrs Hawkins wins Workplace Pedometer Challenge Congratulations to Mrs Hawkins, Student Manager, on winning one of the prizes in the recent Pedometer Challenge organised by Get Berkshire Active (GBA).

Workplaces across Berkshire were encouraged by GBA to get involved with National Walking Month in May and given free pedometers. Mrs Hawkins, pictured far left, covered over 20,000 steps a day during the month.

I’m gonna live forever...

“As a year group we’ve been involved in the school’s productions since Year 7 – Grease, Showstoppers and We Will Rock You – and the standards, impossibly, seem to have got even better with each production...”

Since joining Park House we’ve both had a passion for the arts, so when we found out our last musical was going to be Fame, we were very excited! As a year group we’ve been involved in the school’s productions since Year 7 – Grease, Showstoppers and We Will Rock You – and the standards, impossibly, seem to have got even better with each production, and therefore we were all highly anticipating our last Park House Musical...

Fame was a completely new experience – working in a professional venue, with a professional standard set and technical team was an amazing opportunity. It gave us a taste of what performing a show in the professional musical theatre would be like and helped us create some amazing friendships and unforgettable moments along the way – the most memorable being Mr Peaple’s 15 seconds of fame on the final night of the show!

However, as well as all the highs, this production also faced some real lows along the way. Just two weeks before the curtain went up, two of our leads faced unforeseen circumstances that meant they could no longer participate. What was amazing was how our whole cast pulled together and worked tirelessly to ensure the show could go on. It was a really sad time and our thoughts were with Pascale Barrett and Sam Ho. All your hard work was not forgotten and we hope we did you proud.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to all cast members for their ‘Hard Work’. We’d also like to say another massive thanks to all of the backstage and technical crew who helped out at rehearsals and performances.

Sadly some of us will be leaving school at the end of this academic year (Lee Bouzida, Luke Harden, Tom Hazelden, Louisa Hygate, Matt Lawson, Anna Neary, Sean Osteritter and Georgia Radley). We look forward to the future knowing we will always have our memories of Fame because of the impact it’s had on us all.

On behalf of the whole cast we wish to thank the people who made this whole process possible, Trevor Defferd (Musical Director), Steph Townsend (Choreographer) and Emma Mallon (Assistant Director). These three special people helped us both individually and collectively we couldn’t have done it without them.

We’d also like to say a special thanks to Miss Baron who has been there for us since the start of Year 7 and has seen us grow and develop through our school lives. Bring on tomorrow...

After a groundbreaking success in 2013 with the sell-out performance of ‘We Will Rock You’ it’s no surprise that ‘Fame’ was tipped to be more than your average school performance.

In fact, tickets proved so popular for the production in January that the event had to be held at Arlington Arts to accommodate demand. 70 students performed Fame in front of over 750 people over the three days that the performance ran. Mr Peaple said that moving the performance to Arlington Arts, “added another element to the performing experience for the students giving them a sense of what it’s like to work in a real theatre, as well as enabling more people to see the performance.”

The actors and actresses, singers, dancers, musicians, lighting and sound designers, and stage managers, all students from Years 8 to 13, spent months auditioning and rehearsing for the spectacular performance.

Georgia Radley who played Mabel Washington said: “Having the opportunity to do acting and directing was amazing... I will be so sad when it’s all over.” The show, with choreography by exstudent Stephanie Townsend and music by Trevor Defferd, was described as a “phenomenal performance” by a member of the audience on Twitter after the show. Lee Bouzida, who played Tyrone Jackson said: “I really enjoyed rehearsing and performing in the school’s productions of ‘Showstoppers’ and ‘We Will Rock You’ but I think ‘Fame!’ has been the most enjoyable yet.”

Miss Baron, Head of Drama and Director of Fame said: “In the last few years I have started to realise that if you love Drama, there is no better place to work than a school. The raw talent that walks through those Drama Studio doors every day never fails to astound me and I feel extremely lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful people.”

Mr Peaple said: “I feel so proud of each of these students. What they have pulled together to achieve is nothing short of remarkable. JUMP!

The 2014/15 season has proved to be busy and successful, both for the school equestrian teams and for individual riders...

February: Chloe Gallagher, Alice Parker and Josie Piddington, competed in the NSEA County Challenge Qualifiers at Sparsholt College and were placed in 80cm and 90cm classes, with Chloe qualifying individually to represent Berkshire in the Nationals!

March: We hosted our first Inter-schools Show Jumping Competition at The Berkshire College of Agriculture in Maidenhead with over 200 entries from 26 schools from several counties. We won the overall competition with our squad including Miles Albert, Holly Aufiero, Tom Burton, Chloe Gallagher, Katie Motion and Josie Piddington.

April: A huge competition with over 300 entries at Addington Equestrian Centre in Buckinghamshire where, despite being the only state school competing, we were placed third and fourth in the 90cm and 1m classes.

Katie fights back after injury catastrophe...

After making my first Hickstead debut two years ago my progress came to an abrupt halt when my pony suffered a career-ending injury.

Having done eighteen months of intensive training my dream had come true when I qualified for the Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead. It is every rider’s dream to compete at the prestigious five-star final and I was understandably ecstatic. But, just two weeks later disaster struck for my pony when he landed from a jump ripping his tendon. Before this we had been jumping up to 130cm and competing amongst the top Under 14s in the country. I was one of only 25 to qualify for this event, but unfortunately that was as far as it went as the pony’s competing days were over and he had to be retired.

However, this year I came back fighting this time jumping a younger but bigger pony called ‘Madges Lane Larry’. When we got him 18 months ago he was relatively inexperienced but again by doing intensive training and riding him every morning before school his general movement began to improve.

Thankfully, now it seems all the hard work is starting to pay off. So far I’ve won just under £1000 prize money with him and I also recently topped the South East League.

Even better than this, I have once again qualified for the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead and the finals coming up in July. Just like two years ago, it was very hard work, we had to travel 11 hours up to Scotland and had to jump three rounds of up to 135cm fences. The course was very tough and just six people made it into the last round but luckily it was our day! After a nerveracking wait the results were called out revealing that I had come second just 0.4 of a second behind the winner. Hopefully this year I will make it to the final... • Katie Motion

Miles and Tom enjoy a season of eventing...

Miles Albert and Xaxaxa (pronounced cha cha cha) started the year with a steady round around Ascott-Under-Wychwood. He was then sixth at Munstead in the BE100, followed by a lovely double clear at Tweseldown to finish second.

At his first Novice event in Mattingley they had a great clear cross country to finish tenth. In half term Miles and Xaxaxa competed in a Hickstead qualifier and came a respectable sixth place, their first show jumping rounds at 1.15m.

Tom Burton and Dundee have had a great start to the season too. Although Dundee has found the dressage rather exciting he has started to settle down. They had good rounds at Ascott-UnderWychwood and Munstead and then had a great double clear at Tweseldown. He then had a fantastic result at his first Novice to finish ninth. The month of May again signaled the annual voyage for the Park House Pirates... This year, the trip was made more special as we were joined by three students and a teacher from The Clere. We picked up Ozzy, James and Kieran, and of course Mr Gook from The Clere and excitedly made our way to Southampton’s Ocean Village to board our home for the week – the John Laing. John Laing is a ketch, which means that she has two masts, a taller main mast and shorter mizzen mast behind it. With a main sail, a mizzen sail and an assortment of headsails to be hoisted, there is plenty for twelve crew members to do and not much chance of getting bored!

leaders Frederik, Andy and Martin, and our Boson, Harri. We played a quick name game to make sure we could remember everybody and then got straight up on deck to learn how the boat worked. We spent a few hours learning about all of the safety equipment and how to use the winches and sails, and how to tack (a sailing manoeuvre by which a sailing vessel, which is sailing approximately into the wind, turns its bow through the wind so that the direction from which the wind blows changes from one side to the other).

Before we knew it, we were on our way!

We set off on the first day and had a short sail, tacking down Southampton Water and onwards across the Solent to Cowes. We sailed well into the evening and after dark and so were all ready and relieved to hit our bunks after we had secured the boat.

After dinner, which Harri kindly prepared for us, we had our first experience of how you wash up on the John Laing. It may not sound like much fun to clean up, but only those of us on the boat know the true awesomeness of ‘Extreme Washing Up’! The next day, there was time for some shore leave, allowing the crew to nose around Cowes. There was purchased Larry, the everlasting gobstopper and honorary crew member that we all grew to love and be disgusted by in equal measure!

As we arrived, we were met by some of the crew of the John Laing and then we made our way down the pontoon to catch out first proper view of the boat and meet the rest of the crew. After dumping our bags and choosing our bunks, we settled in the living area (the saloon), with the table for meals and briefings. We were introduced to the Skipper, Vince; First mate, Martin; watch

When we returned to the boat, our Skipper explained that we were going to try and make our way to Yarmouth. We prepared the boat and headed out to sea. We were expecting it to be windy and Andy decided this would be the perfect time to practise a man overboard drill. Needless to say, it wasn’t! As the ‘man’ sailed overboard, a huge hail storm hit. The huge chunks of ice, mixed with force 8 winds meant that we had to save the ‘man’ quickly and

The sailing trip is something I will remember for the rest of my life not only because it was such fun and enjoyable but because it has opened a new door to what I feel I can do now. I now know that I can do things that I would have felt worried about doing before and this

has made me feel better about myself. From start to finish the trip was hard but amazing. It was hard because we had to put up the mast in high winds, which made it very difficult and the first time we did it, it was dark which made it tricky.

The crew on the ship were really nice and caring. Friends that were not on the trip told me it would make you sea sick, but it didn’t. We

decided to head back to the port. We prepared the boat to dock but then the wind died down and so we decided to give it another go.

headed back to the boat, in order to catch the tide, to start making our way to Southampton.

After again preparing the boat for open sea and heading away from Cowes suddenly, the wind became worse than ever. After a short time of trying to deal with it and a few of us feeling quite overwhelmed by the power of the weather and sea, we decided that the best port of call was to head back into Cowes. Whilst it was disappointing not to have a long sail that day, the short sail that we did have was lots of fun and most of us ended up very wet! We had some time to kill so got very messy playing the chocolate mousse game.

This game consists of a forfeit, which is eating a carton of chocolate mousse as quickly as you can with no hands. Needless to say, there were some rather interesting looking faces by the end!

The sail to Southampton was one of our longest and most successful as, by this point we had a good grasp of how to sail the boat. We got all of the sails up quickly and managed to get the boat moving at some of the fastest speeds yet! The conditions were perfect and we had lots of time to practice all of our skills on watch and soak up the sights of the south coast. We were back in Southampton Water before we knew it and prepared to safely dock the boat for the last time

The next day, with the weather much calmer, we decided to head for Chichester. We had an awesome day of sailing and the lighter winds meant that we had far more opportunities to work the sail and navigate the boat.

When we arrived in Chichester we decided to anchor out in the bay rather than go into port. On our way in, we checked out the beaches and hoped that we’d have time to enjoy them. After dinner, we had some time to sit out on deck, talk about our journey so far and check out the peaceful experience of being anchored out to sea and watching the beautiful sunset.

In the morning, we all woke, hopeful that the Skipper would say that we could have some time on the beach. After breakfast, we discovered the dinghy already in the water, ready to take us the small distance to the beach.

We spent a fantastic morning playing games, building a sand fort and finally getting Peter to lay still by burying him up to his neck in sand. After this, we

had fun night activities as well like a card game called ‘Spoons’ and we also played the Washing up Game. One of the highlights for me on the trip was when there was a few of us on the front of the boat, it was hail stoning and a big wave threatened to cover all of us standing at the front of the boat.

All in all, it was a great trip. Everybody got the chance to steer the boat, navigate, winch, change and hoist sails. We learned many new skills and made some fantastic new friends and memories. Well done to everyone for earning their RYA Start Yachting certificates and many thanks to sea staff Vince, Martin, Andy, Frederik, Martin and Harri who really made sure our week was the best! Now to look forward to next year, when the Park House Pirates and will hit the high seas once more! • Miss Hutchings

Join together with the band...

Gifted and Talented

The Brass Band on tour...

To accommodate the growing band of Gifted and Talented (G&T) musicians in Year 8 last year, we started a G&T programme running over three two-hour sessions.

Andy Smets must be very proud of ‘his’ Park House brass band as he took them to Chieveley Primary School in the autumn to present a programme of music to inspire children to take up a brass instrument.

Students learned skills that enhanced and complimented their musical talents, including getting to grips with the basics of Sibelius, a professional music software programme for composing and developing musical ideas.

They all took part in their own band for the Easter Concert, and ended with making their own covers. Joe Hurst, a Popular Music Teacher from Maestros led one of our sessions.

They delighted the children with a variety of music including Frosty the Snowman, The Rose and Postman Pat. The band has indeed grown here too, with Cornet players Phoebe and Charlotte, Trumpet: David, Mark, Adam, Louis, and Charlotte, Trombones: Grace, Lottie, Dylan, Leroy and Kate, Tuba: Connor Humphreys and Drums: Jack Hygate. We have two trumpets, a French Horn and two trombones which are available for any student who would like to start lessons. Please ask in the Music Department. Nearly all the students took up GCSE Music, so we have a thriving class in Year 9. The current Year 8 are now taking part in the programme, and in true Music Department spirit, took a break during the programme to enjoy the traditional doughnuts!

Brass Band helps us to bond with other musicians from Years 7 right up to Sixth Form and it is excellent to be able to share our passion for music with others. Playing with such a variety of people means that we are able to gain experience from one another, building on each other’s experience. It also gives us the chance to share our hobbies with other people as well as improving and showing off our abilities.

It also gave students who didn’t normally play in a group the opportunity of taking part and performing...” John O’Shaughnessy, Year 9 In October, we got the chance to go to Chieveley Primary School to give a performance during their morning assembly. We played songs by ABBA, marching tunes and Bob the Builder! It was a great opportunity for both the band and the children watching and everyone seemed to have a great time!

The band have also performed to Year 7 on numerous occasions, as well as at school concerts and those have also been a bit of a learning curve. It’s always great fun attending Brass band and I hope that we get to attend and perform at lots of other concerts soon! • Charlotte Hemsley, Year 9

The Rhythm of Christmas The Christmas Concert was the highlight of the term for Year 7. There was something for everyone to do, from singing in the Choir to the Samba Band.

The Samba Band was a welcome addition to our performing groups this year, and after a fanfare performed and written by Phoebe Goldsmith, Charlotte Hemsley, and David Lee – Year 9, they led the opening of the concert in the ‘African Alleluia’ by Benjamin Harlan. Over 100 singers from Year 7 joined forces with the Choir to create a splendid and rousing start to the concert.

The Brass Band, The Stage Band, The Woodwind Trio, and soloists are all to be congratulated on their wonderful performances.

“Every Thursday during registration, I went to Choir to learn Christmas songs. I also did Tuesday singers where we learnt two songs. I even got a solo! There was always a laugh to be had! I would like to say how much I enjoyed taking part with so many other people in the performances.”

Common people...

Political persuasion As we returned to school after the Easter holidays, one thing was on our minds... the upcoming General Election in May. Excitement and uncertainty led us to thinking about how the school could participate in the democratic process and we decided that the we should hold our own election for the coveted role of ‘Prime Minister of Park House School’.

Four candidates were chosen for each of the Houses, and along with the help of the Senior Student Team, policies from each of the major political parties were randomly assigned to each candidate. The main aim of the election was to highlight the process of democracy to the students, and introduce them to a wide range of political issues including education, the NHS and local concerns.

Many students expressed how helpful this was for them, particularly as they were first time voters. The candidates themselves enjoyed the opportunity to talk to our young people with Judith Bunting (Liberal Democrats) tweeting: “LOCAL NEWS: Many thanks to sixth formers at Park House for a good grilling this afternoon”. • Miss Davis, Head of Politics

Political conference

The candidates canvassed the students by going into assemblies and explaining their key policies. Students were then asked to vote on 6 May, and had to participate in a secret ballot within their tutor groups.

In March, A2 Politics students attended a conference at Reading Blue Coat School which included two former members of the United State’s House of Representatives – one Republican and one Democrat.

Tensions rose as the election results came in, and the votes counted.

Overall, none of the candidates were able to form a majority, and a coalition was negotiated between Oak candidate Annabel Chaffey (PHS Prime Minister) and Cedar candidate Mark Beeley (Deputy Prime Minister). A great effort was made by all the candidates involved, and congratulations to Annabel and Mark on their victory!

We heard from Doctors in American politics who specialised in key areas of our A-Level studies. We evaluated the state of the Obama administration and the effect ‘God, good hair and personality’ had on how people vote during presidential elections. This was particularly useful as it expanded our understanding beyond textbooks.

Sixth Form students were also invited to an afternoon debate between the local Liberal Democrat candidate, Judith Bunting, and Labour candidate, Jonny Roberts. The aim of the debate was to help the students, many of whom were first time voters, gain a wider understanding of the policies and values of the politics parties. Richard Benyon, the then Conservative candidate now Newbury MP, had previously been in to talk to the Sixth Form students.

The debate stimulated some excellent questions from the students, on a wide range of topics from economic policies to local bus routes. The main issue on the minds of the students was on the subject of tuition fees and university grants. There were certainly some difficult questions for the candidates to answer!

We enquired about everything from gun control to electoral colleges, and the answers we received were a surprise to say the least!

The day gave us a very useful and invaluable experience – we all agreed that it advanced the depth of our understanding of the American political system and gave us real-life examples we can use. The talks were highly informative and entertaining and I would recommend that any student studying, or hoping to study Politics, goes on the trip.

IBM Big Interview The IBM Big Interview Day is in its sixth year at Park House. Back in February 40 Year 10 students who excel in subjects like Maths, Science and ICT prepared themselves for practice interviews by a panel of senior business leaders. The students had been coached in advance by Mrs Bestwick, Head of Careers.

The preparation involved students taking part in a number of workshops ranging from how to research IBM, to completing an application form and interview skills. Students then worked independently to explore different jobs available at IBM and relate these to their own strengths, interests and career aspirations. Having selected a job of most interest to them, students applied for the role by completing an application form which was then sent to the guest interviewers in preparation for student interviews. Following the interviews, students received written feedback on their performance and useful tips for improvement.

The actual event day began with an interesting and inspiring opening presentation on IBM and useful tips for surviving interviews, delivered by Ruth Miller of CSC. Students then took part in their mock interviews by senior staff from IBM, CSC, the University of Winchester and Newbury Round Table.

Ruth Miller who organises the annual event said: “The Big Interview is something my team of interviewers look forward to every year. It’s a chance to talk with the next generation of potential employees and give them practical hints and tips on what companies are looking for and how to present themselves. It inspires us too – the students have incredible skills and abilities, and with a little encouragement gain huge confidence from the experience.”

Mrs Bestwick said: “The Big Interview Day provides an ideal opportunity for students to prepare themselves for the real world of work. Interviews are always a stressful time especially when it’s your first one and all of these students will be taking part in formal interviews this time next year when they apply for Sixth Form, college or employment. We are extremely proud of the students, who all performed extremely well, leaving a positive impression on staff from IBM, CSC, the University of Winchester and the charity MapAction.”

Anna Neary – Beech I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the new house system and I am privileged to have become one of the first House Presidents at the school.

Since Year 7, I have taken part in events and assemblies. I’ve loved helping organise exciting events such as House Dance and Sports Day (Beech won!) and getting the opportunity to know everyone in my house in the lower years.

I’ve enjoyed working alongside Miss Ball and Miss Atkinson – the most amazing teachers who’ve made the house system so successful. Good Luck to the new House Presidents for next year!

Louise Rysiecki – Beech I cannot wait to begin my role as Beech House President. I am really looking forward to working more closely with the younger students through both sporting and academic events. I would like to thank Anna Neary for inspiring Beech House – I can’t wait to do the same! I am excited about being able to make changes and improvements along with the other House Presidents and, of course, Miss Atkinson.

Tesni Fakes – Cedar Working as a House President for Cedar alongside the other House Presidents has been truly gratifying. We have worked to promote, improve and develop the school’s house system. Over the past year it has gained much more interest around the school with some healthy competition between the houses. We have brought in new house competitions to get as many people involved whether through sport or the arts. I would love to see a house ‘bakeoff’ introduced as an event in the future. I would like to wish all future House Presidents the best of luck in continuing to develop the house system.

Matt Lawson – Elm I’d like to thank the school for the brilliant opportunity of being the House President for Elm. Not only has it provided a fantastic experience to put on my UCAS application, but it has also developed my public speaking skills through presenting awards to those who’ve excelled in the house system. I personally can not wait to see what my successor (the dashingly handsome George Stacey) will bring to the house system! I would like to thank Miss Atkinson for coordinating and supporting us and setting up fantastic events such as the Christmas parcel drop.

Luke Harden - Oak Our house system is a very important way of demonstrating our values to younger students. It’s been so much fun getting to know the students in Oak and seeing them grow into incredible young people. I really hope next year’s House Presidents get as much enjoyment working with them as I have.

Izzie Butler – Cedar I am very excited to become a member of the house team and follow in Tesni’s footsteps. I know I can have a positive impact on the younger students and support them through their school life. With the many new opportunities open to us within the system there’s much more competition than when I was in Year 7 and 8. The house system has grown and is now an important part of our school life. I feel privileged to be part of Cedar, and know that we can do it!

George Stacey – Elm I am thrilled to be representing Elm as House President. I feel this will mean I will be able to make a difference throughout the school in helping all students of all years group achieve their goals. I have represented my House with pride since Year 7. I have always tried convincing certain teachers to give me and fellow Elm class mates a couple of extra house points in lessons to try and boost Elm’s end of year scores. This year I aim to go around tutor groups and ask for ideas on how we can improve the schools house system. The house system is an important way for all years to join together as a team. I can’t wait to see how the house points turn out this year, hopefully Elm will come top! Come on Elm, we can do this!

Shoshana Pryor – Oak I am very excited to be given the chance of being House President and taking over from Luke’s great beginnings. I cannot wait to help other students in the house system to get their badges and to wear their house colours with pride. I plan to start helping all year groups by using all my skills to help give back to Park House in every way that I can. I am up to any challenge that may be given to me and I will work hard to ensure we get the best results.

My time with Elm has been absolutely awesome! I am very sad to leave this role behind as working with Elm has been one of the most fun and interesting things that I have done since joining Park House. My only consolation is that I am leaving Elm in the very capable and excitable hands of Mr Columbro, who is absolutely perfect for the task ahead!

I am proud and privileged to have been appointed Head of Elm House. It was a fantastic moment for myself and I hope to push Elm to glorious heights. Elm is a great house and I hope along with my fellow Elm colleagues and students we can raise the standards of the house. I can promise a house full of enthusiasm and commitment! Go Elm!

Your new Senior Student Team The Senior Student team for 2015/16 is full of ambition, drive and ideas. After an extensive selection process the members were selected; Head Girl Kate Oubridge-Egan, Head Boy Duncan Shelton, Deputy Head Girls Sophie Bunce, Imogen Skinner, Sarah Naylor, Selina Jones, Kamila Sinoplu, Bethany Daley-Franks, Laura Hill and Deputy Head Boys Jack Bunce, Sebastian Kennedy-Compston and Elliott Lelaure. Their interests span nearly every subject at Park House so we hope to provide lots of opportunities for all students.

The main aim of next year’s team is to build a community within the school. Key to the effectiveness of the team, links between the Sixth Form and lower school are hoped to be established through events both inside and outside the school.

By using the Student Council to interact with lower year groups we hope to form a relaxed environment in which all students can voice their ideas. Through the work of the team we would like to expand on the already flourishing House events and be more involved with organisations such as West Berkshire Food Bank. We want to encourage active roles of the students within Park House and the community as a whole. Improved use of the display screens within school, debating competitions and a student newspaper are just a few examples of our team’s ambitions for the coming year.

Furthermore, the Learning Leaders, Bethany Daley-Franks and Laura Hill will be working with the rest of the team to help implement our ideas.

Taster Days Every year the opportunity to share our staff, our students and our values with younger students on the Year 5 Taster Days generates much enthusiasm and this year was no exception.

We welcomed over 500 Year 5 students from 26 of our primary feeder and partner schools over four days for a series of unique learning experiences where we explored ‘Robots, Rockets and the Future’. The students were challenged in the introductory assembly to ‘think like astronauts’, to creatively and critically address every challenge, and they certainly did!

All students considered the aerodynamics of rockets in Science, creating their own rockets and competitively launching them alongside their peers on the field. There were some truly spectacular crafts, rocketing majestically towards space! The less spectacular space craft nonetheless drew sympathetic ‘aaahhs’ from the spectators, a testament to the camaraderie and support evident across the Year 5 days in general.

Across all activities our Year 9 helpers were looking for opportunities to recognise examples of where Year 5 students reflected three of our core values – excellence, determination and friendship. Again, the Year 5’s acquitted themselves remarkably well. They demonstrated passion for their learning, tackling all activities with determination and tenacity working well with their peers and our students, embracing opportunities to meet new people, learn from and support them.

The students enjoyed Media where they were able to use green screen technology to distort their appearances, Design and Technology where they produced robot masks and PE where they explored space whilst working in intensely collaborative situations with others. I am delighted that the students enjoyed the days and were so positive in their feedback to us. I would like to extend my thanks to all of the Year 5s and their teachers who visited us this year and made the Taster Days so rich and memorable for all of us.

I would also like to thank all of our fabulous, creative teachers who never failed to inspire with their ideas and our Year 9 helpers who were committed to the students and to the quality of their experience with us. Brilliant Work We have always championed students who achieve their Personal Best and we are now more than ever finding as many ways as possible to identify, reward and display even more ‘Brilliant’ student work as a portfolio around the school. Mr Peaple has asked staff to select “work which you believe is truly exceptional in relation to the age of the student concerned.” Students whose work is featured will be invited to discuss and promote their work further, receive extra house points and have the possibility of being featured in Personal Best and online. To that end Jack and Ellie recently met Mr Peaple to discuss ‘Miss Haversham’s desire for revenge’ after being identified by Miss Anderson. And, Mr Marshall recently selected some truly excellent film poster designs by Media Studies students. Well done to all and keep up the good work! •

Award winning solution to clean water problem Programmed for success In January, Louis Thijssen and Phoebe Goldsmith travelled to London to participate in the Gifted and Talented Science and Technology Challenge Finals at Kings College London. Louis and Phoebe were invited to the event following their success as part of the Berkshire Challenge Days.

Students were asked to design and create a robot that could follow a simple pattern on the floor.

This seemingly simple task demanded a whole range of skills from the students, including coding and computer-aided design, as well as concentration and teamwork. After a chaotic train journey to London which resulted in us being rather late, Louis and Phoebe worked incredibly hard and their team finished in a very commendable second place. Aiming high at Shrivenham In March nineteen students travelled with Mr Stoneman and Ms Newall to the Defence Capability Centre in Shrivenham to learn about the science behind our military’s defence systems.

We learnt about the energy transformations that artillery shells go through and saw what happens when shells hit various thicknesses of armour at mind-blowing speeds. We learnt that some of them travel at four times the speed of sound! We were allowed to climb inside and on top of tanks which provided us with an insight into what operating a tank is like and just how small the interior is.

Everybody then learnt how one of the big artillery guns was fired and we played out the role of each member of the gun crew. We were amazed at the number of checks that had to be made to ensure the process was carried out correctly. It was hard work lifting the heavy shells!

After lunch we were shown how to operate the simulators on which they train soldiers preparing to travel overseas. We used two different computer simulators. One involved pairs of students working together – one driving the tank and the other operating the turret and gun. It seemed very realistic and showed the complex systems the military uses. The second involved each student playing as an independent foot soldier on a mission to defeat the other team. To us, it was like playing a realistic computer game, but of course to the soldiers it is much more serious than that!

It was an amazing day and we all enjoyed it. Despite the highly enjoyable side to the trip we did learn some very interesting information about the army’s hi-tech equipment. This has certainly reinforced the work we are doing in Science back at school. • Daniel Roch, Year 9

A group of our Year 9 students have developed a way to ration and administer water to third world areas in Africa where fresh, clean water is hard to come by. Jack Hygate, Connor Humphreys and Laurence Bu-Rashid have worked closely with the charity Africa Water Enterprises (AWE) to develop an ‘eWATERPay’ system, and win the National TeenTech Award for Infrastucture in the process.

Working with AWE, the students developed their idea using modern technology to enable individuals to pay a small amount of money to the charity in return for a specific measure of clean water. The amount of water administered is controlled by an RFID (radio frequency identification) tag linked to a mobile app, allowing the individuals to top up their balance easily. The money paid then goes towards maintenance to ensure that the water supply is maintained. This is an idea which the charity have invested in already and the students are looking to have their devices on the ground in Gambia

by January 2016.

The finals took place on Monday 22 June at the Royal Society in London. The students were invited to pitch their idea to three industry experts from Network Rail. After a tough round of judging, we were pleased to see our students announced as winners in their category. The students have won the opportunity to visit Buckingham Palace to be presented with their award

by HRH Duke of York. They will also have the opportunity to visit Network Rail to view some of the exciting advancements in technology being made there.

As we work closely with TeenTech, we were asked by them to support the event with additional students.

Duncan Shelton and Kate Oubridge-Egan, our Head Boy and Head Girl compered the awards where they welcomed onstage numerous ‘Tech Celebrities’ including James May, Dr Christian Jessen and TeenTech co-founder and technology champion Maggie Philbin.

Students Kirsty Stephens, Lucas Voss and Louis Thijssen were also highly praised by the event organisers for providing assistance on the day.

The Big Bang In March several students were invited to attend the first ever visit to The Big Bang event held every year at the NEC in Birmingham. The event is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK. Everything is aimed at showing young people just how many exciting and rewarding opportunities there are out there for them with the right experience and qualifications.

The students discovered various ways that STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) are used in industry.

Activities and showcases were run by EngineeringUK, The British Science Association, The Department of Business, Innovation & Skills, The Royal Academy of Engineering, Siemens, Rolls Royce, Airbus, Sky and The NHS Careers along with several universities from around the country.

The students had a fantastic day and most found one of the most enjoyable and fun experiences was boiling a kettle by pedal power.

In fact it took some persuasion to let others have a go. From paper aeroplane throwing to the next green energies, it was an eye-opening experience for everyone. • Mr Wells

The sweet smell of success?

Business Studies students have been up to their elbows in soap making this term. This has been an inter-departmental event with Miss Morgan involved in the production involving a variety of colours and fragrances including cedar wood, lavender and baby powder!

Packaging has been an area of focus with this year’s students considering the impact on the environment. This has led to some inventive recycled paper containers as well as the more traditional material scraps which Miss Atkinson has been on hand to give advice and help with.

The marketing and promotion has been a key area and the students have been busy photographing, putting together advertisements and looking at pricing and distribution with the help of Mr Bruce.

So a real team effort which one of the budding entrepreneurs, Zac Lynch and his group including Leon Crossman, Saska Hroncova and Amber Richards will be talking forward and using the proceeds for diversification into selling smoothies and melon at the school sports day.

UK Digital Skills Taskforce

Grace Blake and Lucas Voss joined presenter Maggie Philbin, CEO of TeenTech at the BETT 2015 show. The presentation highlighted the five key areas for successful digital schools. Grace and Lucas answered questions from the audience about what they believe is the future for schools in the digital era and about their research into how young people perceive careers in IT. • Mr Marshman

Setting a good example in computing

It was a great day.” Dan Roch, Year 9 The new Computing Curriculum means that every child from Reception upwards will now enjoy the benefits of learning about computing. This is a wonderful opportunity but the transition period, as we move to a point where a child in Reception has learnt computing from day one, will take some years.

As a lead school in the Centre of Excellence in Computer Science, Park House was selected to provide video footage for continuing professional development (CPD) resources for Computing teachers across the country in both secondary and primary schools. The programme, funded by the DfE, Microsoft and Computing At School, comprises of a toolkit for teachers to become creative and innovative in their classrooms. This is with aim of enhancing the learning of the new compulsory Computing curriculum using cross-curricular approaches to enthuse and engage students.

There is a misconception that computing merely involves programming or ‘coding’ and that a career in Computing involves sitting at a desk programming applications and Park House School were asked to provide an

example lesson from our curriculum to demonstrate just that. The aim of the lesson was to learn and demonstrate computational thinking skills to produce an animation of a dance routine. The lesson involved students creating a storyboard of frames and moves from well-known dance routines and then sequencing their own dance routine. Key frames were then taken from these dance routines and were captured using digital camera. After the decomposition of the dance routine, students programmed an animation using loops and procedures to recreate a digital representation of the original dance.

Students were involved in the filming of the computing lesson. For many of these students it was a unique and previously unexperienced environment working with coordinators, editors film, lighting and sound crews. I was amazed by the confidence of the students in front of the camera and the enthusiasm to be actively involved in the filming that took place. Following the filming of the lesson, Park House received a letter of praise from the editor expressing that the students were the best that they had ever worked with.

The video has been integrated as an essential part of the Quickstart Computing CPD toolkit (www.quickstartcomputing.org) which combines lesson plans and interactive resources, being implemented across the country to engage students in the Computer Science curriculum.

Year 7 girls visit Google A team of Year 7 Computer Science students were invited to a unique day of computational thinking at Google Campus, London. Our team consisted of Jodie Boyle, Lily Carroll, Lidia Nowicka, Holly Aufier, Caitlin Richards, Bethan Glinn, Lois Southwold, Ella Groombridge, Ellie Findlater, Beth Roch, Natalie Salvadori and Rebecca Gennard.

Amazed by the sheer scale of the Google Campus offices, the girls were directed through the many uniquely themed award winning Google offices where they assembled at a boardroom meeting area. They were given a presentation by two female Google computer scientists where they learned the importance of computational thinking to solve problems and the girls were taught how computer science can be used to improve society and the environment.

The girls were then given a challenge to program two human robots – in our case, Rebecca Gennard and Lidia Nowicka. The students worked in two teams to program their peers using a range of predefined functions and procedure calls, which when placed together and the correct parameters applied, would enable their robot friend to follow the instructions precisely. The aim was to enable the two robots to walk across the boardroom, turn to face each other and wave. Although this sounds like a simple task, it was nothing but. The girls needed to work as a team to produce a range of

complex code instructions and apply their logical thinking skills. It was no surprise that this was a success.

This trip was also a fantastic opportunity to see professionals working in dynamic spaces, using mobile technologies – working hard and playing hard. They were given a tour of the different floors which included the YouTube labs where upcoming YouTube artists can use the skills and experiences of Google staff to reach wider audiences.

It was fantastic to see the amazement on the students’ faces as they were taken in and out of exceptional themed working spaces and seeing how the staff were able to be mobile users of technology, working in different places with different colleagues. These are the skills that our young people need for their future careers. It was a view into the future of how our students might be working when they leave education.

With the continuous movement towards Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) at Park House, it’s clear to see that the use of mobile technologies will enable our students to be ready for the challenges and experiences ahead.

Our Year 7 students were a credit to the school. Their enthusiasm, talent and creativity were very infectious. Clearly, Google felt the same way saying, “It was our pleasure to host you today, the girls were amazing – smart, active and curious – and we are happy they liked it.” • Mr Marshman

The Compute-IT series has been produced by Hodder Education for secondary schools to implement a creative and innovative Key Stage 3 Computing curriculum. The series consists of a student book, teacher pack and electronic resources to complement classroom activities.

Compute-IT

Uniquely, these resources have been produced by in-practice Computer Science teachers across the country which means that the materials are tried and tested and have a focus on cross-curricular learning including Art, Dance, History and STEM subjects to name a few.

As a DfE appointed Master Teacher, I was lucky enough to be one of the authors who have contributed to the transformative teaching resources. In

There were twelve of us and two teachers. We got off the tube in London and walked to the Google offices. Through the revolving doors, there were the comfiest sofas any of us had ever sat on.

Then our guides Ola (who was Polish) and Svetlana (who was Russian) arrived. We went to a our “Common room” on the fourth floor.

Once the introduction was over, they gave us a task to complete. We were split into two groups and one person from each group volunteered to be a robot. The rest of us wrote an algorithm so that our robot could to get from one end of the room to the other, and then wave to the other robot. After that, we went on a tour around the offices. Each floor

had a different theme to it, including leaves on the fourth floor, flowers on the fifth floor and fruit on the sixth.

On the seventh floor, there was the “La La Library” – a quiet space for working. There was a Nap Pod which included a timer to wake you up with music.

There was even a games room, where people could play table tennis and snooker. It is used when they need an idea because some of the best ideas when we are relaxing and enjoying ourselves. Once the tour ended we went back to the common room and were given some presents including a Google pen, a rucksack and some other goodies. writing the books and interactive materials I have been able to introduce imaginative resources such as unplugged activities to teach computational thinking without the use of computers.

There is no doubt that the resources have been a hit – over 8000 copies were sold after five months of being released. It is my hope that teachers will be able to use and modify the materials to give them a head start in delivering outstanding Computer Science lessons which ultimately enthuse and inspire students in the classroom.

I very much put this success down to the fantastic experiences that I have had both inside and outside of the classroom with students of all ages at Park House and the way in which our students are able to openly describe tasks they enjoy and how they would like to take their learning further.

Having received some fantastic feedback, it’s great to know that many school children are experiencing elements of the creative Computing curriculum that we demonstrate at Park House. • Mr Marshman

Make IT Digital launch

Kiara Jones, Erin Purton and Josh Smith were given VIP seats in the Platform Theatre at the University of the Arts in London. They were some of the first in the country to hear about the BBC’s UK-wide flagship initiative Make IT Digital programme.

Rory Cellan-Jones and Maggie Philbin detailed the most ambitious project to promote programming and Computer Science since the release of the BBC Micro in 1981. As part of this programme, the BBC have developed the Micro Bit – a device to give children an exciting and engaging introduction to code and to put a new generation back in control of technology. The Micro Bit is a small wearable device with LED displays which can be programmed using a range of programming languages. It can even connect with other devices such as the Raspberry Pi and the Arduino. And best of all, these devices are due to be released to every child in Year 7 across the UK. Kiara, Erin and Josh were invited by Maggie Philbin to support the event after they took part in the national TeenTech Awards earlier this year where they worked in groups to develop their own new piece of technology. The students were asked to put together a display of their work and to talk to the special guests at the event about the valuable experiences that TeenTech offer young people.

Throughout the day Kiara, Erin and Josh discussed their projects with industry experts which was a great help as it allowed them to get extra suggestions to make improvements to their projects.

Whilst at the Make IT Digital launch Kiara, Erin and Josh had the fantastic opportunity to take part in an interview with Maggie Philbin for the BBC. The BBC’s technology reporter, Rory Cellan-Jones interviewed the students and the clip aired live on the lunchtime news. The students displayed outstanding confidence and really showed their enthusiasm for technology. • Mr Marshman

DigiGirlz at Microsoft Our Year 9 DigiGirlz – Aimee Shannon, Amelia McKay, Gemma Forte, Holly Donohoe, Carys Davies, Fay Penlington, Grace Norton and Dulcie Crosby – took part in an annual national competition hosted by Microsoft at their headquarters in Reading.

The event promotes digital learning, ICT and Computer Science for girls. The main hook of the day was a challenge to invent, design and advertise an innovative new Windows 8 platform app which would make use of new technologies and would integrate and promote a social experience.

The girls came up with an idea to produce an app that would enable users to scan products in order to gain vital dietary information which would then inform the user as to what exercise through different sports could be undertaken to enable the calories to be burnt off.

In addition to this, the user would be connected to other sport enthusiasts that they might link

with to enjoy the exercise in a more social manner. The idea was then complemented with marketing designs to support the video advertisement. The DigiGirlz had free access to much of the Microsoft campus in order to develop their advert and to create some unique and engaging footage by speaking to various professionals around the site.

After the footage had been collected and collated, the girls used Movie Maker to combine to streams of advertising and enhance the experience through the use of sound effects and music.

Additionally, the girls were given presentations from female role models working at many different levels within Microsoft. They were able to gain an insight of their varied roles including using Computer Science to monitor deforestation in the Amazon and other career opportunities such as enabling users with hearing impairments to become more

independent with the use of new technologies such as the Arduino.

The Park House Digigirlz demonstrated fantastic teamwork and collaborative skills and used them effectively to be innovative and creative when undertaking computational thinking. As ever, this year’s Art Exhibition was a brilliant and eclectic mixture of individual pieces and installations – A Level Textiles from Miss Atkinson’s group, Photography, Art and Design, and, for the first time, the addition of A Level Product Design and GCSE Resistant Materials from Miss Hayes’ group.

We were thrilled to have even more visitors than usual – parents, friends of the school, staff and students – particularly those from lower year groups who we are hoping to inspire in their GCSE work.

Several visitors went out of their way to comment on the work. Local photographer Giles Penfound said: “You must be so proud - it’s amazing!”

Homes for Hedgehogs It was agreed that one of the last practical assignments to be completed by Year 11 Construction students should be something that would be beneficial to wildlife and the natural environment. We approached Thatcham-based rescue centre Hedgehog Bottom Rescue’ and asked if they were in need of some new houses for their tiny friends as we had just the right students who were keen to make some hedgehog homes.

Hedgehog Bottom Rescue are a small charity that is funded by staff and donations from the public. Their ethos is to care for sick, injured and homeless hedgehogs and to release these animals back into an environment that is deemed safe and habitable. They try and raise public awareness about the decline in hedgehogs, the hazards they face and encourage adults and children to respect and take an interest in them.

With nature in mind the Construction students were given the task to find out about Hedgehogs and their habitats and to design and make a suitable home that provided shelter and protection for these prickly creatures. Before making the homes they had to consider: • A hedgehog’s natural environment • Their requirements for a home • Where their home would be located • What materials to use and whether they should incorporate recycled materials • Minimal use of materials used from non-renewable resources • Safety factors • Cost of production The assignment gave students an understanding of the dangers these animals face through the destruction of their natural habitats and an insight into maintaining a better environment that animals such as the hedgehog can live in. • Miss Waye and Mrs Noden You can learn more at: www.hedgehog-rescue.org.uk

Every picture tells a story Over the past year, my photography has developed with some inspiration from research conducted during GCSE Photography lessons and beyond. Several opportunities have allowed me to practise my skills including Year 5 Taster Days both this year and last, and my first wedding shoot last December!

In recent years there have been rapid technological advancements which have allowed high resolution cameras in small mobile devices making photography more accessible. This has made it more difficult for images to stand out amongst the crowd, which meant that I felt even more pleased for my entry (main picture above) in The National Schools Photography Awards 2015 to be shortlisted in the top 25 in my category.

Recently I also entered and won first prize with a photography piece in the Park House Open Art competition. For this I will receive mentoring from documentary photographer Giles Penfound – the perfect chance for me to further understand photography from someone else’s perspective.

The May edition of the local magazine ‘The Wash Commoner’, featured one of my shots on the front cover and I intend to continue contributing to the magazine now I have finished my GCSEs. Over the summer I plan to work on some personal photography projects too! • Lucas Voss, Year 11

When Sophie met Georgie We asked former Head Girl Georgina Campbell in for an interview about the creation of a new Student Editorial Team for Personal Best. A trainee reporter for the Reading and Newbury Chronicle, she is an inspiration to students who hope to pursue media careers. I learnt from my interview with Georgina that a good journalist uses the fewest words to get across their point. So I’ll keep this short!

I was delighted Georgina had the time to fit in our meeting; media life can be hectic: “No day is the same.” The different papers and deadlines result in a busy working atmosphere and occasional opportunities to fit in pieces for other papers which surround her.

Getting offered the job off the back of an internship, Georgina explains one of her favourite aspects of being a reporter: “I go to court quite a lot, I get to go to Reading Crown Court and there are some quite high-profile cases. It’s interesting as you get to follow them as they progress. One morning my editor called at 7:30 and said you have to go to this place where there has been a car crash. The car had taken out all the windows of a whole strip of shops. So I went straight away! I had to get the story.”

The action of her job day-to-day seemingly never ends. Explaining her excitement to work on the recent election: “I was at work on Thursday and stayed counting votes until six in the morning and then went to work again!” It appears all action, but like any job she assures me, it can be very tiring.

When I asked Georgina’s thoughts on a student led Personal Best and the new Student Editorial Team I got a simple answer “Amazing.

That’s what it should be.” I couldn’t have been happier. She was excited by the idea of students’ involvement in all aspects of producing the magazine, whether through photography, writing, editing, and had some wisdom to impart. Whilst

Georgina maintains the opinion that “Whether it’s through music, art, technology or maths, all students should be given a chance to show off their skills. Then the children can shine at what they’re

good at and that’s possible at Park House. The new Student Editorial Team is a great way to give more students opportunities.” I could not agree more.

My interview with Georgina was inspiring for the future of the Student Editorial Team. I would like to thank her again for her time and advice. As an ex-student she carries on the school’s values, even though no longer within its gates.

Go wild in the country...

In March, Year 7 went on the Cotswold Wildlife Park trip. We saw many different animals including meerkats, rhinos, camels, giraffes and zebras. We had a great time finding out about the ones that were linked to our rainforest topic. We had a tour guide who gave us interesting facts about the wildlife. Berkshire Young Farmers We are one of the largest rural youth organisations in the UK dedicated to young people who have a love for agriculture and rural life.

You don’t have to be a farmer to be a Young Farmer – if you enjoy making new friends, taking part in sports and other outdoor activities, crafts, talks, organising events, conservation, and heaps of other activities, then the Berkshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs is definitely for you. There are even opportunities to travel and work abroad!

Young Farmers is run by the members for the members with guidance from Club Leaders. There are always opportunities for members to take on officer roles within the club, and at a county and national level.

Anyone aged between 10 and 26 years can join Young Farmers – all you need is enthusiasm and an interest in countryside and rural life. There are four Young Farmers Clubs in Berkshire; Shefford, Newbury, Bradfield and Reading.

One of our members recently described one of his experiences: “The first time that I competed in Public Reading I had only been in Young Farmers for seven months and was very nervous. But, everyone was friendly and the whole thing was over really quickly. Since then I have competed again and, with lots more practice, I have even started to feel quite proud of myself. Last year our

team got to South East Area competition level with lots of other teams. We didn’t win but it was a good day out and you always learn a bit more from the judges comments the end of the day. The skill of speaking well to new people is very important but I need to do more competitions to improve.”

All the clubs meet on alternate Wednesdays throughout the year, with the exception of August when the club breaks for summer.

You learn a lot at Young Farmers from how to drive a tractor to doing an obstacle course with an egg and spoon – it isn’t all about standing in a field and growing crops. One of my favourite things is the annual camp and the annual show during which we get to do lots of different show classes at home. The big project is the float which we design on a trailer and design all the costumes we are going to wear.

Everyone joins in and it is great fun.

You also learn useful skills such as lambing, calving, stock judging, tying knots and learning about different charities. No matter what type of meeting we have it is always fun and educational. • Sophie Mason – Year 8 I have not been a Young Farmer for long but since I have been a member I have learnt so much and lots of new skills. When I did the show for the first time last year I loved doing all the different show classes that I entered. I also loved being part of the show especially the float part. The theme was “Serving our Country” so I dressed up as a Land Girl. I would recommend it to anyone. • Steph Fishlock, Year 8 I find Young Farmers very enjoyable and it is always fun to attend. Since I started Young Farmers I have made lots of new friends and done a lot of new and exciting activities. Wade in the water

In the spring we had the opportunity to go to Rushall Farm at Bradfield. We arrived at school like a normal day and the weather was amazing. The sun was shining and there were no clouds in the sky.

When we arrived the first thing we did was meet our instructor Jenny. She told us about the farm and all of the different farming processes. We learnt about crops, animals, the machinery and about the people who worked there.

We also got to go inside the cab of the combine harvester. When we got out Jack sat in the wheel and he fitted!

After that, we went to see the farm animals including: lambs, donkeys, cows, bulls, chickens and many more. Holding some of the animals was one of the best parts of the day. We held some of the day-old lambs. One of them kept escaping and trying to jump off people’s laps, however the other lamb just sat there and fell asleep on my lap.

Later on, we walked up to the hut to have a quick lunch and after a small stop we got the chance to ride in a trailer on the back of a tractor.

It was really exhilarating – it was quite fast.

Suddenly we went over a huge bump and someone’s bag fell off the back of the trailer and we had to stop so they could get it.

When we arrived at Bradfield sports complex we walked along the river until we reached a pile of waders beside the river.

We put on the waders, with trouble (for some).

We watched Jenny show us what to do then we tried ourselves. The first thing to do was to test the depth and speed flow of the River Pang.

This was fun because the buoyancy lemon went quite fast so you had to be quick to catch it or it went straight down the river. The last thing we did was searching for wildlife and creatures. Someone caught two crayfish! We enjoyed the trip so much.

We wore massive waders that come right up to our chests.

During the time we were in the water we did two things: investigating the width and depth of the river and exploring under the rocks for animals such as a crayfish, water spider, dragonflies and many more – each of them as interesting as the other.

Battlefields trip In March the History department took 47 Year 8 students to the First World War battlefields sites as a supplement to their study of World War One. Our first destination – La Coupole was one of the great relics of the Second World War in Europe. The underground Nazi bunker was used to store, prepare and launch V2 rockets – the secret weapon that Hitler was counting on to destroy London. Here the students thoroughly enjoyed the underground tunnels and then interactive exhibition on the birth of the atomic bomb.

Lochnagar Crater was our next destination.

The detonation of this crater constituted what was then the loudest man-made noise in history.

The crater acted as a stark reminder of the horrors of war and reinforced the sheer size of the devastation caused. Thiepval was our next destination on the first day. The sheer size of the Thiepval Memorial was breath-taking. Standing 141 feet high, Thiepval is the largest British war memorial in the world, containing the names of over 73,000 British and South African troops who were killed in battle but whose bodies were never found.

The students explored the memorial looking for family names and regiments local to Berkshire and were genuinely shocked at the sheer number of names carved into the memorial. Behind the memorial lies a joint Anglo-French cemetery which the students examined and respectfully noted the contrast between the white French crosses and white British headstones.

We started the next day in the beautiful Belgian town of Arras, where the students were able to observe some of its World War One history. After lunch we moved onto Vimy Ridge; the strategic importance of the Ridge was immediately obvious to the students who were struck by its excellent views of Arras. Particularly poignant was the Canadian memorial on Hill 145, the twin pillars of which symbolised the two main nationalities that make up the Canadian nation – the British and French. The wall carries the names of 11,285 Canadian dead whose bodies were never found. Furthermore, the reconstructed trenches at Vimy illustrated the appalling conditions as well as the close proximity of the enemy trenches. We were able to have a guided tour around the trenches and tunnels, which helped give the students some perspective on the reality of trench warfare.

VE Day 70 years on...

I watched this year’s VE Day 70th anniversary celebrations on TV and became quite emotional. You see I was just eight at the time and remember it clearly. Our house was next to a barrage balloon site positioned there to protect the Grand Union canal, the Rover works, the local gas works and Elmdon Airport (now Birmingham International Airport). We missed being bombed by about half a mile but the bomb hit the house of one of my class mates. It detonated and the whole family were killed. School assembly that morning was a very tearful affair. This bombing was probably one of the last runs before Germany surrendered. What a huge relief the surrender was...

Almost immediately the barrage balloon vanished and the area became our play area again. For the VE celebrations the site was commandeered by the adults in the vicinity and a huge bonfire built. Someone had made bunting and strung it around the site... Many Union Jacks were flying and there was a remarkable, lively atmosphere. I had never seen fireworks before so the display which was organised was a real spectacle.

1945 was a time of rationing and anything unusual

We also visited two further sites, focusing on the British cemetery Essex Farm, and then the German War cemetery of Langemark. Seeing these two very different sites allowed the students to compare how the war was remembered by the different sides, noting how feelings still ran deep. We paid our respects to the war dead on both sides. Essex Farm Cemetery was a very significant site, where the youngest soldier buried was just 15, only two years older than our students.

That evening we took part in the moving ‘Last Post Ceremony’ at Menin Gate. Ben Marshall and Lilly Gohara did a fabulous job representing Park House in laying of a wreath in remembrance of the sacrifices made. The following day we spent time in the ‘In Flanders Field Museum’ at Ypres. The new exhibition tells the moving story of the invasion of Belgium and the first months of mobilisation, the four years of trench war and the permanent remembrance ever since.

Although the trip was often sombre and moving, the students gained a memorable experience and came away with a real sense of gratitude towards those who willingly gave their lives in the cause of freedom. This was especially important in the context of the 100 year anniversary of World War One. The trip helped the students to make connections between the reality of the war and what they had studied. Special thanks to Miss Lewis for all her efforts in organising and running such a fantastic trip, Mrs Morland for her help behind the scenes and to Miss Snelling, Mrs Noden and Mr Tillen for assisting and accompanying us. • Miss Davis, History Department was a luxury so all the families involved pooled some of their ration coupons to create a spread of food, fit for a king – at least we thought so! Trestle tables laden with goodies we children had never seen before. Cakes! What were they? Sugar had been rationed, flour had been rationed, bread had been rationed, you even had to have coupons before you could buy clothes, and then you were limited as to how much and what you could buy.

The fireworks were let off just as dusk was falling and they seemed to us to go on for ages. Fizzes, pops, bangs and colourful glows in the sky.

Cascades of silver light made us ooh and aah... Bedtime was forgotten about and the fire was still glowing the following morning. My brother and I were very lucky as our father was on essential work building motor cycles for the troops. He came home most nights except those when he was required to take ARP (air raid precaution) duties. My friend next door, his father was an RAF pilot and was away from home for most of the war. It is very important that various dates and events concerning the war are remembered and celebrated. I know it was a celebration back then, but it is important to spare a thought for those men and women who did not return to enjoy the fruits of their sacrifice. • Mr Tim Franks, ex-teacher at Park House, pictured here during his time in the military in Malaysia.

This is a six year intensive programme run by KPMG, who will sponsor me for my degree in Accounting and Finance at Durham University, provide work experience placements and the most surprising of all – a salary to match.

In terms of competitiveness for a place on the course, I have not been told the statistics for 2015 but I do know however that in 2013 there were 150 places on the scheme, with 1900 applicants. To think that I am one of a lucky few is incredible. The six students from Park House School joined others from eight West Berkshire secondary schools where they worked with their Buddies at Vodafone to take part in a series of self-development mentoring sessions and

workshops. This programme has been successfully running as part of the Enterprise skills programme run by the West Berkshire EBP with the support of Vodafone for the last seven years. Take a Chance is a unique initiative that aims to motivate and inspire students to achieve their true potential.

The programme focuses on personal learning and development through exposure to new ways of thinking and behaving and is designed to

inspire and motivate students as well as equip students with life and business skills providing insights into how a business works.

This year was particularly successful with the end of year’s programme finishing on a high with a celebratory atmosphere. The team sessions were lively and it was clear that the students valued having time to prepare and consider how to make the most of their qualities and skills. • Mrs Langford-Holt

Sports Personality 2015 Sports Presentation Evening 2015 was our best yet. Over 130 students, our largest crowd ever, arrived at the Hilton North Hotel on the evening of Thursday 25 June to celebrate everything sport at Park House over the past year. For staff this is always one of the most enjoyable evenings of the year, giving us the opportunity to join students and parents in celebrating the successes of our individuals and teams.

Another purpose of the evening was to thank the many people who help support the huge breadth of sporting activities that our students access. PE staff and staff from other departments give up a phenomenal amount of their own time to provide these opportunities and I want to express my gratitude on behalf of the students for these staff making these personal sacrifices to enable us to provide students with many extracurricular opportunities.

Our guest of honour, Claire Purdy, retired Captain of the England Women’s Rugby Team and World Cup Winner, gave an inspirational talk – she spoke passionately about her pathway to the top of her game, her recovery from a career restricting injury and a rugby match delayed by an actual tornado!

The biggest reward for a PE teacher or sports coach is to see students participate with enjoyment and then making developmental progress in their ability. The achievements we celebrated have been the result of a huge amount of hard work and dedication by students and staff alike and have brought a considerable amount of silverware along the way.

The evening was a great reminder of our philosophy, that every individual should aspire to their Personal Best and do all they can to achieve it. We cannot ask for more than that!

This year students left comments as on why they were voting for someone and it was fitting that we shared these with the winners.

The final awards of the evening are always the most prestigious, the Sports Personality of the Year Awards. These are awarded to a male and a female in each year group who have embodied the key values that the department holds dear, those of the Olympic Values – Friendship, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Equality. With previous winners including many Head Boys and Head Girls and a certain Jonathan Joseph (see opposite) it is the prize most coveted by students. Each decision was very difficult but each winner was very much worthy of the title.

The fantastic evening finished with food, drink and the usual disco where the staff once again showed their dancing prowess. We are already looking forward to next year! • Mr Tree

Don’t stop me now...

Official School Partner

I started playing rugby at the age of four.

I stopped for a year but started again at the age of six. I love rugby so much and was so happy when I got an opportunity to join the London Irish Rugby Academy here at Park House. I also play for Tadley and have been selected for Berkshire. I am a flanker so I am on the right outside of the scrum and it can be tough. I hope to continue my progress in rugby and hope to play at a high level like Tom Croft or Jonathan Joseph one day.

Arguably the world’s best ever Number 8, Zinzan Brooke joined us in April to teach our students the finer points of rugby and the Haka.

Upon arrival, Zinzan – most famous for his 45-metre drop goal in the 1995 World Cup – was greeted by Year 10 students who performed

The rugby legend spent time working with various groups of students including the Girls’ Senior Rugby Team who were semi-finalists last year at Twickenham in the National Schools Cup and boys from Year 9 and 10 who have been selected to tour South Africa in the summer of 2016. Before he left though he was careful to take the opportunity to encourage the girls in the lower school to participate in rugby by spending some time with them to pass on hints and tips.

Zinzan also spent time with Cara Brincat and Carys Cox who just days earlier had become National Under-18 champions with Berkshire Girls Rugby. Cara said: “Spending the day with

Zinzan brought many opportunities and skills, and gave me an insight into my future.”

Carys said: “Zinzan was confident and a great people person. The day was very memorable and he gave me great advice for future rugby games.”

This inspirational visit was all made possible by the charity Ok Our Kids, of which Zinzan is a patron. OK Our Kids was founded by Tony Churchill and his wife in 2013 to provide support to schools, families and individuals to ensure their health and safety within the community.

Jonathan Joseph stands out at Six Nations Park House old boy Jonathan Joseph was described by many sports commentators as England’s best attacking player at this year’s Six Nations Championships. With three tries in the tournament he provided the turning point in the first match (which to that point had been dominated by Wales) when he darted and wriggled his way to scoring a try which once converted by George Ford brought England to just one point behind Wales – England eventually winning 21–16.

Jonathan started playing rugby whilst studying at Park House – rugby is introduced into the curriculum from Year 7 and encourage participation through to Year 11.

And, as readers of previous issues of Personal Best will know, Park House is no stranger to professional rugby players, having also been the school of 38 times England capped flanker Tom Croft, and Nick Rouse, lock for London Irish.

In the last issue of Personal Best we briefly featured Alice Chambers after she had delivered a painting commission by Mr Peaple to present to London 2012 heroines Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins at Prize Giving. She has since been commissioned to make a presentation image of rugby legend Zinzan Brooke. We caught up with her at the end of her foundation year at art college...

Alice Chambers

Last September I started an Art Foundation Diploma (a qualification between A Levels and a Degree) at Basingstoke College of Technology.

I felt this would be a great opportunity to develop and experiment with my work, without having to decide on a specific degree subject yet.

The course started with a one-week trip to St Ives. We went on to learn about various artistic techniques and principles, and experimented with many types of media and subject specialisms. This was really fun and helped me in making a decision about what to study at university. As the course went on, our projects got longer and we were given a freer rein to explore the project theme. The course has been hard work but definitely worth it! It has given me many valuable skills and experiences, and I am really pleased I chose to do it.

I have always enjoyed painting and drawing, as well as graphic design; however, none of these were exactly what I wanted to do. Storytelling and the film industry are strong interests of mine, and this became more obvious to me as the course went on. I have decided to study animation at degree level, as this is a perfect mix of art, design, and film. For my two most recent projects, including my final project, I created animations for the final outcomes. These were a big learning curve for me, as I hadn’t tried much animation before this. I really enjoyed it, and there are so many different areas of animation that I can’t wait to explore at university. In September 2015 I am going on to Arts University Bournemouth, (providing I get a pass in my diploma!), to study Animation Production.

As well as doing my foundation year, I received two commissions from Park House for paintings of sporting stars who were visiting the school. In Autumn 2014, I painted Olympic gold medal rowers Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins, who were speakers at the Year 11 Prize Giving, and in Spring 2015, I painted the legendary Rugby player Zinzan Brooke. Being commissioned by the school has provided me with some work experience as well as the opportunity to meet the stars face to face, and has allowed me to give something back to the school. I was also honoured to have a print of my painting of the two rowers auctioned off at the OK Our Kids Charity event at the Leander Rowing Club in Henley, and it was wonderful to see my work raising money for a good cause. I hope to be able to carry on painting and having opportunities such as these, and I am so grateful to be doing something I love as work! •

Netball Netball season has just come to an end and Park House were yet again pushing for incredible performances in the senior leagues.

Our Year 10 netball team has been undefeated in its league this season and this culminated in winning form at the District Tournament held at Theale Green School.

The girls won their group matches so convincingly, including one tenminute game won 16–0. Pretty impressive! They then strolled through to the semi-finals playing and beating St. Barts 12–5. Finally they played Downs in the final and won 9-6. What a fantastic season – I was thrilled!

Not to be outdone, our Year 11 girls have also had a great season, often having to borrow players from the years below due to other commitments.

They had a great league, finishing third. In the district tournament they unfortunately had only five Year 11 players, borrowing Gemma Forte from Year 9 who was outstanding. The team played some of the best netball they have ever played and with just six players managed to get through to the semifinals, narrowly missing out to Theale who then went on to win the Tournament.

The road to Sweden

Ex-Park House student Jack Hatton-Johnson who is now at Bath Spa University has been setting Personal Bests this season and has been rewarded with a place on the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team heading to Eskilstuna, Sweden for the European Junior Championships on 16 July.

October last year saw Jack at the training village in Bath University. Jack’s coach, the legendary Malcolm Arnold OBE, put the athletes through a tough first session – six 300m runs with three minutes rest between each. The boys knew that pain was about to come... 40 minutes later Jack and his training partner Lawrence Clarke were sprawled across the track in complete exhaustion.

Eight months later Jack is the national age group champion for the 110m Hurdles having run the seventh fastest time recorded by a junior athlete.

Jack has now gained selection for the European Championships. Malcolm Arnold OBE the legendary senior citizen of British Athletics has produced another thoroughbred.

Jack has kept in touch with the school since leaving and recently came back to Newbury to present Mr Peaple, an avid fan of athletics himself, with a thank you for all the support he was given while at Park House. • Mark Hatton

We are the champions!

Back in April our Year 11 boys finally achieved their goal of winning the District Cup, a journey that started four years earlier.

I had the privilege of being given the role of coaching the then Year 8 football team – the first time I had been given my own year group to coach and little did I know over the next four years I would lead them to glory.

This wasn’t the first time they had reached a final though, having been there the previous year only to be beaten.

In Years 8 and 9 they also reached the semi finals – each time getting knocked out – once to penalties and once to a last minute goal.

But, in Year 10 the boys grew physically and mentally and this showed in some outstanding performances, including a 3-0 win away to local rivals St Bart’s. This eventually lead us to our first final as a team against The Clere School – a tough game which The Clere won 2-1. It was very disappointing as I felt the team deserved to be champions for the progression they had shown throughout the season but it wasn’t to be...

We came together for our last season as a team in Year 11 and we were even more determined to win the cup – the boys again giving us some fantastic displays of football. We were unbeaten in the group stage – winning games against The Downs (7-0), Trinity (4-3) and St Bart’s (3-1). Special mentions to Harry Monger and Louis Stewart who I thought were brilliant throughout the season. Captain Dan Bailey and Vice-Captain Matt Berry Hargreaves were superb in their team motivation.

Then came the semi-final against Kennet which is always a tough game as they are a good team. Harry Monger and Frazer King proved themselves as match winners as the team won 3-1 and progressed through to the final.

It wasn’t a particularly nice day weather wise but on 27 April at 4pm the final of the District Cup was under way against our rivals St. Barts. A very

even game with good chances for both teams meant we needed a player who could make a heroic difference and that player was Harry Monger. He hassled the defence all game and the rewards came, two great goals to silence the local rivals. It finished 2-0 and after four years of trying the Year 11 boys were finally champions!

It has been a fantastic four years working with these young men and I can truly say it has been a pleasure. I wish them all the luck in the future – Year 11 champions – my champions! • Mr Columbro

Brad picked for England Hi my name is Brad, I do judo as an after school activity at Newbury Judo Club and I train three nights a week and do competitions all over the south – anything within a three hour drive from Newbury.

I fight in the under 60kgs weight group and I am now a 10th Mon Green belt. Since October I have been to Eastleigh, Crawley and Nottingham and have medalled at all of them.

At the end of last year I went up to Sheffield for the British Championships with three other club members – it was a very long day. I had several fights in my weight group and was very proud that I came away with a bronze medal – my coach was also very proud of me.

And, because I have now medalled at several competitions, my coach received an email from the British Judo Association telling her that I have been selected as a pre-cadet England Squad member and to train with them up at Walsall at their camp and so my journey continues. • Brad Chick, Year 9

Bicycle race Several of our Key Stage 4 students have had the opportunity to take part in an unusual activity for their Physical Education lessons.

Whilst most, if not all, students have ridden bicycles before, most are unlikely to have been coached by a British Cycling Coach!

On a series of Friday mornings, Graham “Mac” McNamee from British Cycling drove his TARDIS-like van onto the school fields to spill out mountain bikes, helmets and various other equipment for improving cycling skills!

Students benefitted from Mac’s expert tuition in cycling and how to improve their control of the bikes and overcome obstacles. They competed in many different types of races, from the Keirin to obstacle races. It was an amazing opportunity for our students and their smiles were fixed on their faces for each of the sessions.

Championship players support new partnership QPR striker and former Hungerford Town player Charlie Austin, and Reading FC’s Republic of Ireland International Alex Pearce are fully behind an exciting new partnership between Park House and Hungerford Town Football Club. The two players are ambassadors for the Hungerford Town Football Academy which is a full-time football and education programme for 16 to 18 year olds. From September 2015 the programme will be delivered in partnership at Park House.

Students will receive eight hours coaching every week from UEFA ‘A’ and ‘B’ Licensed coaches in addition to fixtures in the Football Conference Youth Alliance, FA Youth Cup and Tactic League at Hungerford Town.

Academic performance is valued as highly as results on the pitch and students will be studying the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport with the option of an additional A Level. There will be a limited number of places available for students who wish to study A Levels alone but this will only be offered to those considered exceptionally talented.

Alex Pearce said of the link: “The Hungerford Academy is a similar programme to the one I followed as a student at Reading FC. It was always stressed to me by my parents how important my studies were just in case the football didn’t work out and it’s great Park House is providing a variety of courses.”

This sentiment was echoed by Mr Peaple who said: “We are delighted to be working with Hungerford Town FC to offer a unique academy programme that will simultaneously develop students’ footballing and academic potential. This is a wonderfully exciting opportunity and we greatly look forward to welcoming the first cohort of students to our Sixth Form in September.”

The Academy provides a platform for developing players capable of making the step into non-league football and potentially beyond which is something Academy Manager Gary Clifford witnessed first-hand whilst at Watford FC. Clifford recruited current Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga into a similar scheme and he is now one of the leading scorers in the Championship. The dream is to find another Charlie Austin and he commented that: “This is a fantastic opportunity for any young player to combine doing what they love with getting an education. I took the route through non-league into professional football and I’m sure this scheme will unearth and develop players capable of doing the same.”

D@win Dance Company The Dance Department were thrilled to have a visit earlier this year from D@win Dance Company. The company is made up of third year dance degree students from the University of Winchester. The students who have all auditioned for their places organise an annual spring tour to perform their newly choreographed works to students in schools and colleges around the area.

Park House were the first establishment to welcome the students who very enthusiastically turned the Dance Studio into a performance venue bringing their own lighting and sound equipment. Park House dance students from Years 10 to 13 were treated to a lunchtime performance of nine inspiring works demonstrating a range of styles including contemporary, hip hop and physical theatre followed by a question and answer session and a practical dance workshop.

National Youth Dance Company Success What a truly phenomenal achievement for Year 13 student Luke Harden to be selected for The National Youth Dance Company this year. Luke went through an arduous selection and audition process alongside 600 other young dancers before he was offered one of 30 places in this highly talented and very prestigious company hosted by Sadlers Wells.

NYDC , now in it’s third year, provides first class training for talented young dancers from across England who also have the opportunity to perform original work in world-class venues, led by renowned choreographers and collaborating with established artists and companies.

The dancers develop high-level performance skills and receive guidance

and information on career pathways, with a view to preparing them for a future in dance.

Luke met and worked intensively with the company for four weeks over the year under the guidance of one of the most prolific choreographers, Artistic Director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and four of his Eastman

dancers. They created a new work called Frame(d) which was performed to a packed audience at Sadlers Wells Theatre, London on Friday 10 April.

Mr Peaple, who was in the audience to support Luke said: “Luke has been an outstanding ambassador for dance education throughout his time at Park House, and it was therefore a great pleasure and privilege to see his school career culminate in such a magical performance on this most special of stages. He is, and remains, a real inspiration to the next generation of our immensely talented and committed young dancers.”

Luke himself said: “My experience at NYDC has been incredible. The people, the places and the training have been absolutely fantastic. I’ve learnt so much about myself and my potential to become a professional dancer. I will be sad to leave in the summer of 2015 but I will remain in contact with those I have met for many years to come. I truly recommend any aspiring young dancers to audition, because it has been one of the most inspiring years of my life.”

I am very proud of Luke’s achievement with the NYDC. He is the first dancer from our school to successfully gain a place with the company. We have been studying Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in A Level Dance lessons and it was amazing for Luke to come back into school to share some of his experience of working with him.

It has been an absolute pleasure to have taught Luke at Park House School over the years – he truly is one of the most outstanding male dancers I have taught. I would like to wish him the best of luck with his professional training which he begins at Bird College in September.

Quantum Leap XII This month our dancers took part in the twelfth Quantum Leap Dance Festival at Arlington Arts. The annual show hosted by Park House included performances from our students, other local schools and dance groups. Second Charity Run & Fun Day After six months of planning we were blessed with a beautiful day on Sunday 18 May. An army of Newbury Runners and Park House staff, most of whom had been setting up the course all day on the Saturday, were putting the final touches to their designated areas.

The First Wash Common Scouts had the barbecue burning, the PHSA had the refreshments set and the fantastic course route was all marked out. The many stall holders were setting up and it was really coming together – all before nine o’clock on a Sunday morning!

At bang on 9.30 am, after a great warm up, the toddlers 200 metre race was off - it was great to see so many smiling faces as they went over the finish line and received their fantastic medals, goody bags and doughnuts!

Following on from that was the much anticipated children’s 2k race around the grounds of the school and then a 5k and 10k adults run taking in the amazing scenery we have behind the school at Sandleford.

Across the four races we had an amazing 442 runners – 30% more than entered our first race last year, all crossing the finish to some fantastic music blasting out from our DJ. Once the races were complete and trophies given out to the top three winners in all categories, the live bands took to the back of a lorry and showed what musical talent we have here in the school.

On the other side of the showground our first Dog Show proved to be a resounding success with 104 dogs looking to win prizes in ten different categories. The winners received trophies and the first six places in each class received rosettes, together with all entrants enjoying Bonio biscuits!

We were very grateful to Mrs Christine Hill who judged the classes. We were also very grateful to Grace Blake – Year 11; Phoebe Just, Charlotte Phillips, Ellie Pounds – Year 8, Tiegan Doyle, Ellie Findlater, Dylan Morris, Louie Morris – Year 7, students who helped run the show. All the dogs were impeccably behaved and we look forward to having them back next year!

As well as all of this, we had our first Open Art Competition exhibited in the Sixth Form common room with local artists judging the array of artistic talent that is also in abundance at the school.

By this time and with over a thousand people on the field, the atmosphere was buzzing – everybody was smiling. Mr Peaple said: “In all my 30 years of attending events, and there have been many, I have never felt an atmosphere like this!” It truly was an amazing day.

The final figures are still coming in but first indications look like it could break the amazing £3000 we raised for CLIC Sargent and the PHSA last year! We must say a very big thank you to approximately 100 staff and Newbury Runners who contributed in one way or another to this event and here is to an even bigger and better, (if that’s possible,) event next year!

Open Art

Competition When our first Open Art Competition was launched in January we had no idea the response would be so good! With over 40 entrants and 75 pieces of work we knew it was going to be a great show and decided to exhibit the entries as part of the Charity Run and Fun Day. We were inundated with photography, painting, ceramics and textiles of the highest standard making the judging particularly difficult. Our three guest judges artist Sally Haynes, photographer Giles Penfound and milliner and textile artist Jane Corbett were extremely complimentary about all the work on display.

Overhearing some of the conversations about the pieces proved that the work was some of Park House’s finest. It was particularly exciting to see the creative talents of our students, siblings, parents, teachers and staff all showcased together. The feedback we received was extremely positive and it was nice to hear that many of our visitors would like to enter next year’s competition

Three of our students have secured places to study at Oxford University despite increasing competition and only just over half of Oxford’s 3,198 undergraduate places being allocated to state school students.

For the fourth year running we have been rated in the UK’s top 15% of A Level providers.

The A Level Performance System (ALPS) is used by schools across the country and uses a ‘thermometer’ to measure achievement.
