CROMER LINKS HALT
by Chris Weston
Readers of 1950’s vintage or earlier might still recall as motorists or car passengers, seeing countywide, the word ‘HALT’ just before joining a major road. The traditional red triangle mounted on a black & white pole was enclosed within a large red circle. And the instruction to motorists read “HALT” Major Road Ahead. Like most Road and Street signs, these have since changed more than once.
LOCAL HISTORY
obscured to prevent enemy spies or paratroopers realising finding where they were.
But did you know that today, Cromer only has one railway station often referred to as Cromer (Beach) to distinguish it from the other two, namely Cromer (High) and Cromer (Links). Norwich and Yarmouth also had 3 stations in bygone days. Cromer (High) closed in Sept 1954.
After the Great War (1914-1918), Golf courses nationwide received a huge surge in popularity so on 9th July 1923, Cromer Links Halt railway station located between Roughton Road Junction and Overstrand station was opened on the outskirts of Cromer on the Norfolk & Suffolk Joint Railway. Its arrival was an attempt to encourage golfers to use the line. Hence the Halt was deliberately sited to serve the nearby Royal Cromer Golf Club which had formed in 1887 during the height of the Great British golfing boom. The land today’s course occupies was duly rented out by Lord Suffield and Royal patronage was granted by the then Prince of Wales, who subsequently became King Edward VII.
Facilities were somewhat basic, with only a single wooden platform costing £170 to build; two wooden benches and a Running-In Board (a large sign showing the name of the station’s name) not forgetting the obligatory oil lamps used in the
hours of darkness to show the name and also for safety. During World War ll, running in boards nationwide, were either removed or
The Links Halt platform was built of sleepers supported by wooden trestles. No shelter was provided for passengers who arrived from the nearby road via a path leading up the railway embankment. West of the Halt, a bridge carried the line over Northrepps Road and took trains along a further embankment before reaching Norfolk’s only tunnel (the Cromer Tunnel). This had been built by the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Railway in 1893 to take the line under the Great Eastern’s Cromer High to Norwich route. The tunnel was only 61 yards in length.

Cromer Links Halt’s regular timetable provided around six trains each way between North Walsham, Mundesley and Cromer (Beach). They primarily served golfers arriving at and leaving from the nearby Royal Cromer Golf Club. But with no provision of a direct service through to Norwich, the Halt only lasted 30 years, closing

Children and Teenagers Avoiding School Due to Mental Health Challenges
Attending school can be a significant challenge for children and teenagers struggling with poor mental health, as overwhelming feelings often make the school environment feel unmanageable. However, with the right strategies and support, they can rebuild confidence and re-engage with education.
As an Advanced Drawing and Talking and Sand Play Practitioner, I've seen first-hand the importance of providing a safe and non-judgmental space where children feel heard and understood. One of the key benefits of these gentle creative therapies is that children don’t need to articulate or even fully understand the root cause of their feelings. Through the creative process of drawing or building a ‘sand world,’ they can explore emotions with curiosity and begin to release uncomfortable feelings they may be holding onto.
Following each therapeutic session, I also teach practical wellbeing tools such as breathing techniques and mindfulness exercises to help manage difficult emotions in real time. Each tool is carefully tailored to the child or teenager’s individual needs, interests, and strengths, with the ultimate goal of enhancing emotional resilience.
If your child or teenager is struggling to attend school, please scan my advert QR code (shown right) to learn more about how I can support them in rediscovering their potential.

WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION
Start of a new year and our turn to visit our French Twinners in La Pommeraye and Montjean-surLoire 9-15th August 2025, so a good time to join our friendly association and see the lovely Loire region where they live, sample their delicious wines and make new friends here and in France. We have booked our executive coach and plan to visit the famous city of Rouen en route, twinned with Norwich, of course, and not too far from our final destination. We shall spend one night there with a tour and chance to visit the sights the next day before heading on to stay with our hosts and enjoy their excellent hospitality and local excursions. The more people we have on the coach, the cheaper the cost so do come and join us.
February 7th will see us at The Hotel Wroxham in the evening, enjoying our post-Christmas meal, a bit later than usual but we shall have a good time and have fun catching up with our friendly members. Look out also for a quiz this Spring sometime, another chance to get together with good food, wine and banter. We’re also hoping to take to the water in June with one of our flotilla excursions, where our boat owning members take us out and we meet up in one of the broads for a picnic lunch. There’s lots to look forward to this year.
Book Club had their usual gettogether on Wednesday 15th January, and we had a bit of a change and talked about our favourite book club book to date, everyone chose which one they had enjoyed the most. WROXHAM BURE
VALLEY ROTARY CLUB
Firstly, may we thank everyone who supported our Santa sleigh collections in December. Santa met lots of lovely children while out and about in Sprowston, Spixworth, Wroxham, Baddersfield and outside Tesco in Stalham, and everyone was very generous. As a result, we have been able to donate £1750 to the East Anglia Air Ambulance, plus make a number of other smaller donations to Rotary Foundation, the Norwich Foodbank and Making Connections in Hoveton. We are now busy planning for 2025 and have a number of activities already in the pipeline, including the School Technology Tournament at Broadland academy, a valentines meal at Wroxham Barns, and continuing to help at the annual May steam event at Strumpshaw. We also have a great programme of interesting speakers lined up for the new year at our weekly Monday evening meetings at Wroxham Barns. Guests are welcome at any of our meetings, but please let us know if you intend to join us.
This year we are introducing a new class of membership, Associate Member, which entails a small membership fee but allows people who have less time available to get involved in some of our many activities as and when they can If you are interested in this idea, please contact our president to find out more. You can also support us and the many local and international charities we donate to, through the Broadland Council Lottery Scheme – simply go on line at www.communityatheartlottery.com and sign up, selecting Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club as your chosen cause. You can support us directly by visiting our page on the www.totalgiving.co.uk web site.
February is the best time to enjoy the displays of purple crocuses which we have been planting in strategic sites around the local
villages over the last few years, to recognise our Purple for Polio campaign to eradicate polio world wide – so keep your eyes peeled! Meantime, we hope everyone enjoys a safe, happy, and healthy 2025. Remember, in the true Rotary spirit of “Service above Self” we have members ready and willing to help out in the local community wherever the need arises. If you fancy joining us for a vibrant, sociable, active, and fun club experience, please contact our president, Kelvin Dore, on 07798 786944.
I know it’s only September, but we have great plans for the Autumn including a beer festival and then getting our sleigh ready to roll out for our annual Santa collections. THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK
~ at the heart of our community ~
CROMER LINKS HALT
by Chris Weston
Readers of 1950’s vintage or earlier might still recall as motorists or car passengers, seeing countywide, the word ‘HALT’ just before joining a major road. The traditional red triangle mounted on a black & white pole was enclosed within a large red circle. And the instruction to motorists read “HALT” Major Road Ahead. Like most Road and Street signs, these have since changed more than once.
During World War ll, running in boards nationwide, were either removed or

obscured to prevent enemy spies or paratroopers realising finding where they were.
But with no provision of a direct service through to Norwich, the Halt only lasted 30 years, closing

on 7th April 1953. Due to its wooden construction, almost no trace of Cromer Links Halt now remains other than the gate to the approach path up the embankment, the rotting remains of which were said to be entangled in undergrowth. And finally, Cromer was not alone as several more railway halts were also in use around Norfolk, including Caister and Potter Heigham. There was also Brundall Gardens Halt between August 1924 and May 1968, when it was renamed Brundall Gardens.

WROXHAM FOOTBALL CLUB
Many weeks have passed since our last update in The Wroxham & Coltishall Book but, going into the new year Wroxham still find themselves just inside the relegation zone. However, we have as much as four games in hand over some of the teams immediately around us as the weather has played havoc with the fixture list. Despite some injuries to key players and the loss of one to Australia, The Yachtsmen have put in some fine performances.
Amongst the highlights were a 5 - 2 away at Grays Athletic which saw our goalkeeper Ollie Sutton score direct from a drop kick and another 5 goals in Kings Lynn as we beat their U/23 side 5 – 0 to progress into the semi finals of the Norfolk Senior Cup. At the other end of the scale, a lowlight was the floodlight failure at Walthamstow whilst trailing 3 – 0!
Postponed games always mean an evening game on a Tuesday night so check our social media for those and especially the cup semi final game Vs Mulbarton Wanderers which will be held on Wednesday 19th February KO 7.45pm at The Football Development Centre in Bowthorpe NR5 9ED.
We were delighted, just after Christmas, to be able to donate some old kits to the charity, Wear a Sports Shirt which sends much need sports kit of all types to Africa. Do come along and support your local club, it’s going to be a tough run in now until April but with your help we can maintain Step 4 football on The Broads for a record third season.
Our thanks to George Purves for the fine action shots from recent games.
