Christmas Treats or Christmas Poisons?
This time of year is fraught with potential dangers to our pets, so let us remind you of the potential risks of poisoning from our festive food and of other seasonal hazards that affect our four-legged friends.
Chocolate always has been and always will be poisonous to dogs and cats. The higher the cocoa solid content, the greater the risk. Consequently, white chocolate is far less of a risk than milk chocolate with dark chocolate being the most toxic. So, if your pet devourers the Christmas chocolate, please check with your vet for advice. Your vet will want to know the type and how much chocolate has potentially been eaten along with the size of your dog or cat. If there is a perceived risk of toxicity, they may need treatment. Overall, it is better to avoid all temptation by not putting any chocolate on or under the Christmas tree! Other foods that are also poisonous to pets that we tend to have in abundance at this time of year include those that contain grapes, raisins, and sultanas such as Christmas cake, pudding, and mince pies, as well as the fruits themselves. These can all prove lethal in even very small amounts, so don’t risk it. If you know that your pet has ingested even the smallest amount, please contact your vet as a matter of urgency. Other toxins to be aware of include macadamia nuts, onions, leeks, shallots, and garlic, so please watch out for all those tasty savouries. Rich, fatty foods such as gravy can cause stomach upsets, along with diarrhoea and in some cases a serious condition called pancreatitis – which is an inflammation of the pancreas resulting in pain, vomiting and dehydration. This will often require hospitalisation for treatment. Turkey bones can be a choking hazard, they can seriously damage internal organs and cause obstructions and constipation, as can the foil we cook the turkey in! Leftover foods can grow mould, which can induce convulsions, so secure that food waste bin lid or better still store it well out of harm’s way. One other unexpected problem is antifreeze; it is very tasty to cats but will cause irreversible kidney failure even if your cat just licks their paws after walking through a puddle of it. Emergency treatment is needed. Let us ensure this Christmas, that humans enjoy human food and pets enjoy pet food and treats therefore no one will be making an unscheduled trip to the vets over the Christmas period and both you - and the emergency vet on duty will be very thankful! CLUB - Interested in Gardening and associated subjects? Why not come along to our friendly and informative club, we have a variety of speakers, outside meetings etc. only £15.00 per annum subscription with discounts at two local nurseries. We meet at Hoveton Village Hall on the first Friday 7.30p.m of every month except show days or outside meetings. DANCE FOR FUN - is a fun dance club teaching children 6 and upwards Ballet, Tap, Disco & Gymnastic Dance. We meet Wednesday evening from 6 to 8pm in Smallburgh village hall. The club takes part in many community events through the year. If your child is interested in coming to see what we do please pop along any Wednesday evening.

Usually held on the 4th Saturday of every month at Hoveton Village Hall 9.30 to 12.30. Come along for all your fresh produce including Fresh Fish, Meat, Fruit & Veg, Cakes, Bread and Preserves. Plus a wide variety of handmade craft stalls offering beautiful original gift ideas. Refreshments available. TUNSTEAD MAHJONG GROUP is a small, friendly and informal group of ladies and men who meet to play Mahjong once a week, on a Friday morning from 10.00am until 1.00pm. At a members home in Tunstead. We are a mixed ability group who would welc ome both those who have played before and total beginners, the latter of whom we are happy to teach. Mahjong is a game played with tiles. The object of the game is to collect sets of particular tiles rather like the card game Rummy. If you enjoy games such as bridge, chess or playing cards, then you might like to join us. WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION
Over twenty members attended our AGM on November 11th at Wroxham Church Hall at 19.30 and we dispensed fairly quickly with the official business and got on to the much more enjoyable part of the evening, wine nibbles and chat. Not much to report, of course, but our French friends in La Pommeraye and Montjean-sur-Loire are having a meeting in November to discuss next year’s visit, 11th-16th August 2022, and we do hope that they can start the ball rolling then. We do hope to have some more social occasions soon, Covid permitting, our usual post-Christmas meal, perhaps a bit later than normal. Book Club continues on Zoom for the time being, perhaps for the winter, and we discussed Victoria Hislop’s “Those who are Loved”, Helen’s choice, in November, a tale set in Greece. Nominations for Broadland District and South Norfolk Council’s Business Awards are now open. The awards recognise and celebrate the amazing array of successful businesses in both districts. Despite the challenges of the past 18 months, many businesses have survived and even thrived, not just financially, but by being adaptable, innovative and excelling at supporting the very communities that have supported them. To recognise this, the councils have added five new categories to the awards, including Outstanding Employer, Business in the Community, Working Together, Business Resilience and Business Innovation. Businesses are invited to nominate themselves for an award in any of the 10 categories and residents can support their favourite business by nominating them as ‘Retailer of the Year’, with the chance to win £100 of shopping vouchers. This year’s categories are:

LET’S MAKE IT LOCAL THIS CHRISTMAS AT ROYS!
When Roys established itself in 1895 its aim was to serve the local community with great products and excellent customer service. This focus has continued over the past 126 years with the theme of “local” being very much at the forefront of the business. This November Roys will be encouraging their customers to “Buy local” to support their vast number of local producers that supply Roys with over 1000 local products, and in turn Roys will give back to their local community by way of a donation to local food banks. Ed Roy, Managing Director of Roys comments “The past 24 months has been incredibly difficult for our local communities, producers and colleagues. We are extremely thankful for the hard work put in by our local producers to ensure that our shelves are kept full of quality food and drink.” “This November we want to encourage our customers to support local suppliers by trying something new or making a simple swap from a national brand to a locally produced one. Not only will the local supplier and their workforce benefit but this also strengthens the local economy.” “We know there are many members of the local community that have struggled during the past 2 years and are continuing to find things hard. Roys would like to support those in need by donating 2p for every local product sold in a Roys store to local food banks. This money will be used to purchase groceries and other goods needed for those in need.” “Our customers simply need to look for products that are labelled on the shelf as local to know that they will helping a local food bank and a local supplier.” The cut to Universal Credit and an increase in energy costs has caused concern for Food banks across Norfolk. To donate to your local food bank, you can find your local collection point in our stores and on the Trussell Trust website. If you are in need of help then you Citizens Advice on 0808 208 2138 who can address your crises and provide support to maximise your income, help you navigate the benefits system, and identify any additional grants you could be entitled to.
ALL IN A DAY’S WORK...
We often read or hear of tales concerning ghosts. These often relate to ‘events’ experienced in Halls, Stately Homes, Churches and other locations, but can obviously occur almost anywhere. Back in the 1960’s, I was told the tale experienced by a Norwich city publican in the days before pubs remained open almost all day, as now. So it could today, be considered irrelevant, but here it is:The dog living at the Dancing Duck died and was widely believed to have gone to ‘doggie heaven’. Naturally, everyone was upset by Toby’s departure. But life in the pub carried on and each day, it promptly closed after the lunchtime trade, at 2.30pm as per Licensing Law requirements. This routine continued until one afternoon, when something unexpected happened. Shortly after 3 o’clock, the publican was wiping down the bar tables in preparation for reopening in the evening. Suddenly, came a loud knock on the front door and thinking a beer delivery might have arrived, he duly answered the call, but there was no beer. Instead and standing very patiently on the doorstep, was Toby’s ghost! Somewhat surprised by this, the publican instantly recognised the ‘creature’ and asked why he’d come back. The visitor replied “I’ve come to collect my master’s tail which he left behind the other day ”. A somewhat witty and quickthinking man, the publican replied “I cannot oblige at this time of day because by law, we are not permitted to ‘Retail Spirits’ after 2.30 in the afternoon. If you return at an earlier time another day, I can possibly help!” - and then he quickly shut the door!! Groan! (Article kindly submitted by Chris Weston).
VAL OVENDEN - THE BRIDGE MAGAZINE
We recently became aware of the passing of Val Ovenden, née Alsop. Her funeral took place at St Mary's in Wroxham on October 5th. Val reportedly worked up until the day she died as the Diocesan President of the Norfolk branch of the Mother's Union, and as editor of the Hoveton and Wroxham parish magazine, The Bridge. As fellow publishers, we fully appreciate and acknowledge the huge effort and contribution Val made to our local community. It was always a pleasure to meet Val at annual Lions events; Stuart and I would like to pay our personal respects to this truly exceptional lady. Some readers may recall the 1967 song by Slim Dusty ‘A pub with no beer’. That’s not too unusual given the pub could either have been exceptionally busy and sold out, or not received an a now overdue delivery. But you may be surprised to hear there was once a Norfolk pub which had plenty of beer plus other drinks to sell but officially, neither had nor needed a licence to trade! This extraordinary tale relates to a former riverside pub, in Horning.
Although never actually dissolved by Henry Vlll, St Benet's Abbey in Horning / Ludham gradually fell into disuse and by the 19th century, was just a ruin. But the site didn’t totally disappear as just along the riverbank from the gatehouse and within the abbey wall was St Benet's House, a barn and a stable. By the 19th century, St Benet’s House was a pub called The Chequers. Given its riverside position, this was considered a wherryman's pub, ideally situated for passing river trade. Although the first recorded publican was Valentine Spendlove In 1794, records tell us the Chequers Inn first opened in 1782. Around that time there is said to have been a ferry across the river Bure here - something which might still be very useful today! This was quite separate of the ferry at the Ferry Inn at Horning. The next named licensee appears in the 1845 and 1854 White's Norfolk Directories as William Grapes, innkeeper. Staying for 20 years (1836-1856), William also became the last licensee and also, the last marshman to operate the nearby mill, finally leaving in 1867. The pub hadn’t needed a licence as it stood on consecrated ground. Still in use in the late 19th century, The Chequers had been demolished by 1907. Its origins are unknown, but it was described as having a Gothic arched doorway of C14 work. The former pub had a late 18th century exterior, but inside are some carpenters' marks and an inscription, dated 1624. After closure, the property became a private house and In 1925, the site became one of Britain's first Scheduled Ancient Monuments, having earlier been divided into two cottages by the 1870's. Then came a new but short-lived experience when they became a stopping place for eggs and butter for folk from the emerging river-based holiday trade. But just over a decade later, the cottages had both fallen into decline and burned down in 1886. For a time, remnants of the flint wall forming a courtyard around the building could still be seen on the riverbank. That ended the long era and ever since, the St Benet’s Abbey site has remained uninhabited, apart from the wildlife. Some people may still think the Chequers was in Ludham but, it was in Horning, as the boundary between Ludham and Horning follows the old course of the River Ant rather than the current one. The Ant once went along the Hundred Dyke and joined the Thurne at Coldharbour.
