It’s Jingle Bells time of the year again; Christmas will soon be here!
Ahead of Santa and his Reindeers arrival, at home we thought it would be a good idea to redecorate the lounge, fit new curtains and blinds, stock up on fuel for the wood burner and generally keep warm until the big day!
Our youngest son Jack is already talking about the glass of milk and mince pie for Santa plus carrot for Rudolph he intends to place by the hearth.
Thinking back, last year Jack found it incredulous that the big lovable man in red may not be as educated as the children he was visiting. Reading a thank you note left by the fire, he observed: “This is crazy; Santa doesn’t even know how to spell the name of his own Reindeer properly. Look, he’s written me a thank you note spelling Rudolph with an ‘f’ instead of ‘ph’ at the end!”
We guess that was a tick in the spelling capability box for an eight year old and a big fat ‘oops’ awarded to Jack’s parents! Whatever you’re doing for Christmas, we hope you and your family enjoy good quality time together.

Turkey's have been around for 10 million years, but it wasn’t until the 16th century that eating them became popular, when Spaniards imported them from America. Henry VIII was the first English monarch to enjoy the big-breasted bird but until the 1950s, it was considered a luxury food, with the upper classes boasting its high price tag but now, it's an everyday item. A traditional English Christmas dinner is roast turkey, brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, rich nutty stu ng, tiny sausages wrapped in bacon and hot gravy. But in Norway, Sweden, Poland and Austria it's fish, while Germany likes wild boar on the menu.
One notable medieval English Christmas celebration featured a giant 165-pound Pie, nine feet
in diameter. Its ingredients included 2 bushels of flour, 20 pounds of butter, 4 geese, 2 rabbits, 4 wild ducks, 2 woodcocks, 6 snipes, 4 partridges, 2 neats' tongues, 2 curlews, 6 pigeons and 7blackbirds!
Henry VIII was the first English King to enjoy turkey, but it wasn't until early 20th century that eating turkey became fashionable at Christmas. Before being usurped by turkey, goose was the preferred choice for the Christmas lunch table in England and recent signs indicate a comeback. Goose meat is richer and darker than turkey, has a higher fat content, but a lot of the fat melts away during cooking leaving deliciously tasty and succulent meat. Although
not cheap, it makes a wonderful treat and the goose fat collected while cooking makes the best roast potatoes.
Geese were bred in ancient Egypt and goose liver was esteemed by the Romans and since then it has been eaten in Europe for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, the goose was the symbol of the creator-god Amen who was around before 2061 BC. In recent years, sales of goose in Britain and Ireland have been experiencing a Christmas upswing. So if you decide to 'dew di erent' this Christmas, make sure you have "a gander" first at goose, for a change.

Lord Baker added, “The Norwich Charity Darts Masters Trophy will hopefully become a prestigious trophy too, and over the years will bear the names of many World darts stars making the trophy a potential fundraising auction item too in theyears to come”.

A host of former World Chapion darts stars have signed up for the first BetVision Norwich Charity Darts Masters to be held at Norwich City Football Club on Saturday 27th June 2015. The event itself will be held in the Norfolk Suite providing a fantastic location for a very prestigiousevent.
The event is being organised and promoted by Lord Russell Baker of Little Moulton who is looking to fundraise for the ‘Lord Baker Community Fund’ managed by The Norfolk Community Foundation. The main aim of the ‘Lord Baker Community Fund’ is to promote health and wellbeing; tackle disadvantage; support local solutions to meet local needs; promote community cohesion; develop sustainable and supportive communities and to deliver grant-making and charity support for the current fund beneficiaries that include East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH), Star Throwers Cancer Care & Support, Chapel Road School for Severely Disabled Children and Norfolk Community Foundation, who will also create a Community Grant programme which will be advertised and local community groups will be invited to apply for grants up to £1,000.
The World dart stars attending on the evening are Eric Bristow MBE (5 x World Champion; John Lowe (3 x World Champion); Peter Manley (former World No.1 and 3 x World Finalist) and from Su olk - the youngest ever World darts champion, Keith Deller.

In addition there will be a small competition with the darts masters consisting of two semi-finals and a Final on the night – playing for the Norwich Charity Darts Masters Trophy. It is envisaged that this event and competition will become an annual event in Norwich for many years. The trophy itself has been donated by David Willimott from Carmichaels Dart Mart in Magdalen Street,
Norwich. David Willimott is the former Su olk darts champion and has had the privilege to play these players on many occasions. In fact a score card still hangs in Carmichaels Dart Mart when John Lowe played David some years ago; David Willimott will be attending on the evening as aspecial guest.

my chosen charities for 2014; the majority of the money was raised on the tombola in the precinct at Hoveton.
I was honoured as President to lay a wreath of poppies on behalf of the Club at the War Memorial in Wroxham on RemembranceSunday.
We will be holding our “Meet the Lions Evening” on Tuesday 27th January 7pm for 7-30pm at the Broadland Youth and Community Centre, Hoveton. Do come along and meet our members and find out what we do for the community, as well as enjoying some light refreshments with us.
This month’s £100 Charity Shop Draw Prize goes to Parkinson’s UK at the suggestion of M Wilson of Wroxham who donated goods to be sold in our shop.
Wroxham and Hoveton Lions are looking to welcome new members, both women and
men, so if you would like to make a di erence in your local community and have a little time to spare, we would welcome your help. Just give our President Lion Dave Barnett or our membership chairperson Lion Suzanne Barnett a ring on 01603 782002 and they will answer any questions you may have. Anyone is welcome to come along to our meeting which are held on the “2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month in the Broadland Youth and Community Centre, Hoveton. Our meetings start at 8pm. THE PROBUS THE CLUB OF CLUB OF BROADLAND BROADLAND
The Probus Club of Broadlands is a club for men who have worked in a professional or business capacity and who are retired, semi-retired, or approaching retirement. The purpose of the Club is to provide an environment for socialising between Members who share common interests and to enable them to increase their social contacts. The Club is nonpolitical and non-sectarian. It meets on the last Wednesday of the month at the Norfolk Mead in Coltishall.
At the October meeting Dr. John Clements gave a presentation entitled Knights Templar in England. John is a chevalier in the Order of the Grand Priory of England of the Knights Templar. He is the Church Secretary and Associate Pastor of the Old Meeting House Congregational Church and is also a motivational speaker and writer. John made an impressive entrance into the meeting room to begin his presentation, dressed in his white cloak and insignia of the Order, to the sounds of religious music.
John told us that the Knights Templar was founded as a French religious military order in Jerusalem in AD1119 by Hugues de Payens. From France it spread throughout Europe. The original objective was to combine the two functions of monk and knight, protecting pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land from robbers, brigands and murderers. They also played an important role in the crusades under direct papal authority. They lived under austere vows of poverty, chastity, obedience including those of a military nature. Their reputation as a formidable fighting force led many European Kings to enlist
their help in fighting to protect Christianity from the march of the Islamic faith.
By the 14th century Europe was at peace and the Knights Templar army had reduced in size but were still very powerful and very rich from payments and gifts for their services. Since they had taken a vow of poverty they re-invested the money and lent. In doing so they brought about a sophisticated banking system which included a forerunner of the modern credit card system. They also owned large property holdings in Europe and the Middle East. By 1307 their power and influence was perceived as a threat by King Philip IV of France and the Pope Clement V and in 1312 the Pope disbanded the Order.
In France the Templars were arrested, tortured, forced to confess to blasphemy and many were burned at the stake. The assets and property of the Order were seized and much of it handed over to rival Orders such as the Knights of St. John in England. The main hoard of Templar treasure was, however, secreted away before it was discovered by the Pope’s men and to this day its location is unknown. In 1314 the last Grand Master was burned in Paris.
The public profile of the Order was raised significantly when it was included in the plot of Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code published in 2005 and the subsequent film released in 2006. John said that much of the depiction of the Order and its history was incorrect and heretical.
Today the objectives of the Order are to: spread and defend the Christian faith; to practice charitable humanitarian work; to carry out the Knighthood’s traditions, and to promote the study of history, heraldry, genealogy, philosophy and reli-
gion.

With just a few weeks to go to Christmas, Santa has now started his rounds on his sleigh and will be visiting all his usual locations. In addition to these he will also be at St Johns School Hoveton on Saturday 6th December and he will also be visiting Hall School, Old Catton on Thursday 11th December. On Saturday 20th of December he will be at Roy’s of Wroxham and on Tuesday 23rd December at Tesco’s Stalham. All the monies raised will be used to support the many local deserving causes inour community.
A number of members manned our mobile tombola at the annual fireworks display at the Lighthouse Inn at Walcott, which is always an enjoyable evening whatever the weather. Last month’s Craft Fair was a great success with many people buying Christmas Gifts as well enjoying the excellent refreshments.
We have made provision to buy a new bench for the Granary Staithe, Hoveton. This is in addition to our other considerable financial support to this worthwhilecommunity amenity. We have paid for 25 bereaved children from the local charity Nelson’s Journey to attend the pantomime, and have been able to donate £2150 each to Scotty’s Little Soldiers and NANSA. Planning is well advanced for our spectacular Masked Charity Ball in aid of EACH (East Anglia Children’s Hospices) who are building a new hospice on the south side of Norwich next year. This takes place at Dunston Hall on Saturday 18th April 2015 and includes a three course meal and dancing to Lee Vasey. We recently welcomed Bill Cox from Norwich South rotary club, talking about their smoke alarm project, which aims to provide smoke alarms for the homes of vulnerable people. Our club has agreed to support this project in our local area so if you know of anyone who

We also were pleased to welcome two guests at a recent meeting – Aljandio and Claudia Garcia from the Monteray Industrial rotary club inMexico. Our up-to-date programme through to the middle of 2015 is now on the web site - if you have not already done so have a look at it as there is something to interest everyone. If our lively social group with its great balance of committed fund raising and interesting meetings and visits sounds good to you we are always looking for new members. We welcome

We are starting to plan our visit to our French Twinning villages of La Pommeraye and Montjean-sur-Loire next year and already have a good quotation price from a local coach company for 13th-19th August, including all coach travel, DoverCalais crossing, a night, half board, in Chartres and a morning there to explore, including a guided tour of the famous medieval cathedral and all coach tours while staying with our French families. It is dependent on us getting at least 20 people, and cheaper as we get more, so members please let us know as soon as possible and prospective recruits, do join up now, it’s only £25 a year for a family membership and you’ll have lots of fun, here and inFrance.
November was a busy month for us, our AGMon 13th, to recap on our year’s events, our very successful 20th anniversary visit here in August, all our various monthly activities and to enjoy Bruce’s slide show of photos of this year’s and previous visits, here and in France-and, of course, to enjoy a few glasses of wine from the local vineyards of La Pommeraye and Montjean! Talking of wine, we’re also looking forward to our wine tasting and “What’s my Qua ” evening at the Bouchon bistro in Hoveton on 26th for which all tickets sold out very quickly and promises to be a very enjoyable evening.
Our post-Christmas dinner is booked for Friday 16th January at Wroxham Barns again with a very tasty looking menu once more with a good range of choices for each course. It is always a great social evening, for old and new members, so let Sue (01603 738555) or Aileen

Our monthly activities continued successfully with French Conversation at Angela’s in Hoveton in November on the topic of “les actualités”/ the news and current issues. This takes place always on the second Wednesday of the month, with Book Club on the last, although in November we moved to the Wednesday before as our wine tasting at Bouchon was on 26th Grace hosted Book Club in November, in Wroxham, and chose Bill Bryson’s “Shakespeare”.
