BROADLAND MODEL
RAILWAYCLUB
Life at the BMRC is getting busy, by the time you read this we will have been at the Catfield Village Fete and hopefully come away with more than sunburn! Next is the Stalham Artisan Street Fayre on July 20th, hoping for good weather for that too; model railways and rain do not mix. Preparations are well underway for our full exhibition on August 24th (bank holiday Sunday) at the Poppy Centre in Stalham, watch for the posters with full details and as ever, check out our website for the latest news.
The Stalham High School team are also very busy, we only have six more sessions this term to complete the layout to a working display standard, I’m super confident they can do it and if they can we will be showing the layout at the Stalham Show – more news later. As always, we have to plan things
way in advance and after Stalham we are planning at least one new layout and updating a couple of others. We are working very hard on reorganising our storage racks to make way for new stuff – a thankless task but it is progressing well.
We currently have two new members who are finishing up their introduction visits and we hope they will be fully paid up by the time you read this. There is still room for more so, if you are interested in visiting and/or joining us, full contact information is on the website: broadlandmodelrailwayclub.co.uk
ST BENET ’S ABBEY CELEBRATES HERITAGE OPEN DAYS.
On Sunday 21 September 2025, there will be a variety of different opportunities to participate in Heritage Open Days at St Benet’s Abbey. The monument itself will be open to the public, with tour guides on hand to give guided tours of the site, including the Cross of Peace, and there will be meet and greet volunteers for those who just want snippets of information and to stroll the site at their leisure.
The Event Team from NAT will provide activities for all ages, including scrap box crafts where you can make a stained-glass window, create your own model monk and much more. There will also be dragons to find in a search trail. For those with an interest in Natural History as well, a Guided Tour organised by Pathmakers will set off at 10:30 from Ludham with Jerry an experienced environmentalist who will talk about the nature on the riverbanks and the river itself. The walk will also be joined by a tour guide from St Benet’s Abbey who will point out interesting stories from the Abbey relating to the river and conclude the walk with a guided tour on arrival at St Benet’s. There are limited spaces for this tour and tickets should be booked via the Heritage Open Day website - Pathmakers page.
It does not end there, all our guests – particularly Dragon Hunters – are invited to then visit St Catherine’s Church in Ludham. Here they will be greeted by Tour Guides who will assist them to locate the Ludham Dragon and relay tales of the century’s old links between the Abbey and the Church. You will be able to buy refreshments in the form of tea and cake whilst visiting the church.
